Mantis has failed in his attempt to avoid damage, though is still going.  Main encounters to date (with an indication of how tackled) were:

Shoal (run & shoot) gave Mantis an instant boost to level 4 and a gain of 23 HPs (just one below maximum).  As my previous character also had exceptional HPs I used the console to test a dozen or so level ups just to double-check if anything odd was going on.  They produced normal rolls, so it looks like I'm just in a lucky streak for HPs at the moment.

Firebead's book, pacify Marl, Karlat (traps), Perdue's sword, slime quest, spiders (run & shoot), acquired boots of stealth (traps).  At this point Mantis received her first damage during a lightning storm, but I was happy to forgive her that.
Image IPB

Returned letter to Mirianne (level 5 - 7 more HPs).  Noober, Neira (backstabs), baby wyvern (run & shoot), Vitiare (run & shoot), Oopah (traps), Zordral (traps), Greywolf (run & shoot), Samuel, belt ogre (backstabs), Tarnesh (backstab), Landrin, Joia's ring, Zargal & Co (stealth shooting) (level 6 - 3 HPs).

The problem came with Bassilus.  He regenerated HPs and buffs every time he was out of sight, so tactics were pretty limited.  While trying to set a group of traps a failure rebounded on Mantis and damaged her.
Image IPB

I don't have a lot of experience with traps, but I was surprised Mantis got damaged - I thought with 80% chance of success a failure would not be bad enough to do that, but perhaps it's just a random chance of causing damage for any failed trap.  Incidentally her success rate has been significantly below 80%.  I suspect therefore that the trap setting % is bugged in the same way as spell learning (which has a significant chance of failure even with a supposedly 99% chance of success, though 100% works OK).

While wondering if I could consider damage from her own trap as not a failure I got careless in an encounter with a wolf when resting and got bitten - so no doubt about that one.
Image IPB

After that I did finally manage to get a group of traps laid and lured Bassilus into them to get a bit of revenge.
Image IPB
Mantis finished the session with a visit to High Hedge, where she saw Melicamp successfully revived.

I find this is a tough fight until you add potions. From memory the duration / glugging order would be something like below and I'd then add a few buffs too depending what you have available. I probably use a few more too but can't remember off the top of my head.

12 hour duration;
- Mind focusing. Dex +3.

10 turns;
- Strength. e.g. Frost giant or similar.
- Fire protection (needs to be 100+ as at least two flame strikes.
- Absorbtion (lightning resistance plus +10 vs blunt instruments).
- Heroism.

5 turns.
- Oil of speed.

Buffs.
Draw Upon Holy Might.

Reserve.
- Regeneration.

Thinking about it further last night I decided to retire Mantis and have another go at seeing how far I could get without being attacked.  The bounty hunter seems well suited to that role because of the range of attack methods (stealth shooting, backstabs and traps in addition to the normal run & shoot and Algernon's cloak), so I've created another one.  This time though the protagonist is a much more effective halfling rather than human.

So far Umbra has just completed Candlekeep.  This included killing Firebead for an initial XP boost.  This initially involved popping in and out of the door and shooting arrows; then later using backstabs when Firebead came close to the door.
Image IPB

I didn't want to use traps before Umbra had 100% skill to avoid the possibility of self-damage.  However, killing Firebead provided Umbra with 2 levels - so she has got 100% set traps on leaving Candlekeep.

Ooh... I've figured out my problems with EasyTutu... area 4300... is damaged...((Could also explain the persistant crashing on the first one)) Is there an install for specific areas?
I have the CD version of Baldur's Gate One and the GOG version of Baldur's Gate 2.
((Once I find that map, I'll post my monk here))
((And to think I've just been living with it for all this time...))

Enjoy.

I started a totemic druid but without rebalancing the spirit animals were just too powerful at early levels since they required magical weapons to be hit.

@Grond0 IMO the dwarf has a better BH stats distribution but in the end I guess it comes down to do you want to lug a hammer or a sling?

@After5CST You could let your familiar cast the 'invisibility' if you don’t mind being Chaotic Good: Fairy Dragon.

Ya, the solo monk is not going to happen. Each attempt I die before reaching Beregost. (3 already) Didn't expect the outnumbering creature spawns.

I would tend to agree with you that the dwarf will be better eventually, but it would only start with 165% total in thieving skills.  The halfling has 225%.  The difference in stealth is the main one (25% total vs 70% total).  As I wanted to put initial skill points into set traps, but also want to do lots of hiding, this makes the halfling much less tiresome for playing the game in BG1.

There are several places you travel where you need 2 invisibilities to be certain of safety (one to travel and another to rest on arrival).  Invisibility tends to be my first choice as a sorceror, though admittedly it seems a bit of a waste once you've got access to high level spells in BG2.

A monk is very difficult to get going if you're trying to use melee in encounters, though it gets good eventually.  However, it's speed makes it easy to run round and missile opponents to death.  Also take advantage of the various quest experience available to get a few early levels to make it less vulnerable to a stray arrow.

I lost a level 3 kensai to a gibberling (already wounded but thought 15hp was safe) yesterday, running a monk now and sticking to melee. Hit and run from the shadows is quite effective if you are patient enough to hide on what always feels like the 19th attempt. Feels safer than the kensai.

Sorry Grond0 but how do you get those numbers?
1.    I work it that a BH gets 30 points first level & 20 points per level thereafter.
2.    + 15 bonus points in set trap (only at the start).
3.    Bonus points for race:
I believe my dwarf gets;
Set Traps +10, Detect Illusion +5, Find/Remove Traps +15 & Open Locks +10 = Total 40
& your halfling got
Hide in Shadows +15, Move Silently +10, Find/Remove Traps +5, Open Locks +5 & Pick Pockets +5 = Total 40

I accept that the Halfling can get 19 DEX, adding further bonuses to thieving skills (+5 per skill except Detect Illusion) but I can’t match those numbers... What am I missing?

Halfling gets 35, 35, 20, 35, 35,0, 25 +40 with dex 19. Total 225.
Dwarf gets 20, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 25 +40 with dex 17. Total 165.

I rescind my previous comment, having just lost melee monk to a dread wolf because I wasn't paying attention. Hence why I'm at the creation screen playing around with these sort of stats :pinched:

I'll be travelling alone, almost. Imoen refuses to leave. I hand a quarterstaff over to her to reduce attacks of opportunity and insist she is to deal with locks and traps only. I may relent if we explore Durlags Tower.

no fighting, buffing etc just follow protaganist and use thief adventurer script. I gave up on scripts years ago so this could be interesting, particularly as I have to switch party AI on.

We need to find some armour and a sword, should be fun.

Imoen hangs back while I push my luck.

Nah that's not pushing your luck, this is pushing your luck. I regain control as the poison expires so don't have to rely on blue potions.
Image IPB

Imoen isn't happy, stop fooling around you oaf I thought it was over at that point.

Only melee I think. Yep, WeiDU log is BGT, core fixpack, ascension and biffing only.

Kohrl, male half-orc.
Today is our first temple visit. Hobgoblins and dogs ambushed us, and I ignored them to chase after Imoen. With her dead I fought off the ambushers and paid 400gp to raise her from the dead.

We are ambushed again, this time Imoen makes sure she isn't the nearest person to me and I kill our attackers instead. Then we are attacked by zombies and skeletons. Easy prey until a nearby bear swipes at me.

End. That sword is fun solo but much harder with shared xp and party targets, so will enter another wizard slayer without Imoen.

Gibberlings are actually quite a dangerous adversary if you let them into melee range.  They can do up to 12 damage, which means a kensai would need 25 HPs to be safe from a critical.

Despite your rescinded comment I agree that the stealth strategy for a monk is very effective and I've used it extensively myself.  However, you do need to be incredibly patient early on due to the miserable stealth chance.  I've therefore tended to compromise by picking up easy XP to get to around level 5 (and acquiring boots of stealth) before using melee much.

Good luck.  I've found the wizard slayer far and away the hardest character type to solo (and I allowed missile attacks to disrupt wizards, though this only makes a marginal difference), so you've got a nice challenge there.

Umbra got up to level 6 and was due to go to the mines shortly when she got attacked. Investigating an old warehouse she ran outside to get away from some dogs, but hesitated a fraction of an instant on exit and one of the following dogs got a bit in.

I'll restart Umbra and have one more attempt to see if I can get her further into the main storyline.

A no damage run, well good luck with that. Just starting to realise how limited the solo wizard slayer is. Both Kazgaroth items and green protection scrolls may be available though.

Vendal, half orc wizard slayer. 19-18-19-11-11-12 ** 2HS, ** 2H style

Winthrop must have heard me knock the nobleman unconscious. He hands over some bolts for Fuller but refuses to sell me anything else. I don't want to explain to Gorion so set off with two healing potions, a quarterstaff and a few items I couldn't fence (a potion of clarity and two scrolls). No helm, sword or armour.

With Gorion dead there is nothing to stop me taking items from Imoen, Xzar or Montaron. Then I double back to loot the battle scene, no time to bury the old man though.

My foraging in the wilderness provides a magical ring, a diamond, a pearl and some armour. I decide not to sell anything until I've made a name for myself, so start filling a storage crate in Beregost.

With Marl, Firebead and Brage sorted I head towards the FAI, equipping the huge sword as I am attacked by hobgoblins. Berserker fury ensues, eventually subsiding so I can grab a helmet from one of my attackers. I find a second magical ring, this one tingling in my backpack as though it wants to get away from me.

A mage called Tarnesh is swatted level 3, 37hp and THACO 18/8 before a pack of wolves ambush me. Then I deal with a belted ogre, only to realise the girdles are of no use to me.

I survive a cave bear ambush not nice but better than basilisks, ghouls, ghasts or wyverns.

A woodland nymph is lucky not to be killed alongside Caldo and Krumm level 4, 51hp, THACO 17/7.

Melicamp jumps into my backpack before I skewer him, unfortunately Thanantyr implodes him.

Nashkel mine.
The kobolds are tricky, hitting me frequently with arrows. I stumble through a trapped bridge and have to heal afterwards. An elven mage called Xan becomes chunked collateral damage before I face Mulahey.

My 4% magic resistance prevents a hold person spell even while I am thinking rigidly. How lucky is that?
Image IPB

His minions are soon diced, after a long wait I recover and loot the place. I'm surprised to find I can wear his boots wasn't expecting that after the girdle.

I manage to lure Nimbul behind the store so we can negotiate in splendid isolation. I guess we'll never know who would send him to negotiate.
Image IPB

Another wizard to slay level 5, 64hp, THACO 16/6.
Image IPB

A bandit camp is next, something experience tells me I won't be able to berserk my way through it. But what choice do I have?

I manage to draw out hobgoblins one by one, culminating in Ardenor Crush. I am unwounded so drag another bandit. I try again, only to charge instead. I kill one bandit as Taugosz Khosann arrives so take a hit before I can retaliate. My turn.
Image IPB

I drop the remaining bandits, heal up and rest outside the main tent. I target Venkt before losing my temper.
Image IPB

He scares me before I kill him no idea if the rage or fear takes priority.
Image IPB

Game on!
Image IPB

Hakt makes his mark as Raemon departs.
Image IPB

The poison isn't very fast, allowing time to kill Britik.
Image IPB

Hakt is far enough away for me to regain control, heal and attack.
Image IPB

When he is dead I spring a trap and learn of a hidden mine in Cloakwood.

Vendal, half orc wizard slayer. Hang on, he's called Vendel...oops
I stop off in Beregost, stash some loot, sell some scalps and clear a house of spiders.

Cloakwood sees me killing spiders and a druid called Seniyad level 6, 72hp, 15/5 THACO. Unfortunately I then kill Aldeth Sashenstar before turning back to the three druids.

I decide it is time to remove the sword so leave Cloakwood. I am ambushed by four ettercaps, this is bad. Bad bad bad. I save vs poison four times.
Image IPB

My last berserk moment is to kill Arghain. His sword feels less powerful THACO falls from 5 to 9 but at least I am in control now.

Cloakwood 2.
All goes well until I hit a second snare. A lone ettercap has me badly wounded 22hp left from 72, would have been game over if a single poison took effect before I can escape. On my return and without the snares they are easy prey Vendal saves repeatedly against poison, unlike the snares.

Centeol and Spiders Bane.
I kill a sword spider, but two huge spiders finally poison me. I have to retreat, killing them as I escape. A temple visit procures 5 green potions and I am ready to return. I need two green potions, grab Spiders Bane and critical Centeol.

I skirt past a hamadryad and a wyvern cave, not sure how to deal with either.

Cloakwood mine assassins.
I could try a scroll of protection from magic but maybe Drasus will attack on his own? He does, so I drag him away in case I need to run, heal twice during the battle then chunk him.
Image IPB

I step into his boots, rest and return for Genthore. The battle is one-sided and I chunk him too. Mages next.

I start with a critical miss on a mirrored Rezdan so retreat. He summons monsters while Kysus follows me. I risk a sprint and kill him but he has cast confusion, which I save.
Image IPB

I decide to run from the approaching horror but save just as I reach the edge. I streak back and disrupt his next spell.
Image IPB

My first evidence of being a wizard slayer follows level 7 86hp, THACO 14/7.
Image IPB

That session felt risky for a no-reload, not sure what could have been done to reduce it either.

It's been a while since my last attempt so have decided to do something completely different - an all good party :)

Daelric, Human, Paladin (Cavalier), LG
Str: 18/69
Dex: 18
Con: 18
Int: 10
Wis: 15
Cha: 18

Proficiencies: Sword & Shield ** & Barstard Sword **

I'm going for a kind of Arthurian/Knighthood theme so my merry band will be: -

Daelric: Brooding avenging warrior. The murder of Gorion has stripped away his childish dreams of brave knights vanquishing fell foes and left him with a desire to smite his foes without compromise or mercy. He hasn't lost sight of his calling and only targets those marked as evil in the eyes of his God.

Ajantis: Noble Paladin. Still clings to the courtly ways and codes of honour that Daelric has abandoned. So while the two have the same goal .. methods vary and can be a cause of tension.

Fey Spirit of the Woods: Jaheira :)

Imoen: As herself.

Dynaheir/Minsc: The beautiful but fell sorceress Dynaheir and her 'touched' man-at-arms.

Thus far have recruited all but Dynaheir & Minsc. Have completed quests in Beregost, South of Beregost, North of Beregost and the Friendly Arm Inn. Due to an early ambush of Ghasts when travelling south to High Hedge after escaping Candlekeep Daelric has enough XP to get to level 3 however I'm not levelling until I've recruited Minsc.

Good luck.

Vendel, half orc wizard slayer.
The first few guards are easy.I use Mulaheys boots to greet Hareishan, but have to retreat as a lightning trap badly frazzles me. After a brief rest I find Hareishan and four guards have followed me.

I get hit by a second lightning bolt, magic resistance defeats a flame arrow but not a scorcher. I glug a healing potion and run around the guards to scorch them too. As I run off the guards attack Hareishan so I run back to see a spell disrupted by one of my earlier hits. I swing Spiders Bane, mage down.

The next level has hobgoblins and guards, but I have to rest twice after killing them. Just Davaeorn and his guard left.

The guard falls quickly, then a battle horror. A second battle horror injures me but I kill it and rest upstairs. Back to Davaeorn. I hit him once, then he gets me with lightning. I cure wounds twice and smile as Davaeorn runs into trouble.
Image IPB

Baldur's Gate.
A tome of dexterity is followed by a miscast ogre mage in the sewers, de-duplication at the Seven Suns and obtaining the helm of Balduran. Then dealing with Marek, Lothander, Varci Roaringhorn, Dabron Sashenstar.

Marek confuses me and I start random killings, making myself disliked reputation 6.

Iron throne HQ.
This is messy. I try to reach Naaman but he vanishes so I head downstairs. We chase around the building, while I focus on hitting the casters and trying to not be there when hold person is cast.

I am glugging blue potions, and Naaman is the first to fall. Next is the doppelganger, Gardush, Aasim and Zhalimar Cloudewulfe. I have used all ten blue potions so barter with Thaldorn, collect my evidence and kill Alai and Diyab on my way out.

Candlekeep.
Once inside I realise I have forgotten the scroll of protection from petrification. Oops.

I make a start with Rieltar, use heal and vampiric drain on Kestor before chopping him. Tuth falls as I have to run so Brunos gets a set of arrows. Time to leave.

Underneath Candlekeep.
No way to break open the chests so I kill some spiders and doppelgangers before leaving.

Catacombs.
I hit Prat once then do the same to Sakul.
Image IPB

Prat takes two more hits as I run around healing and hitting. Bor is next then I use vampiric touch on Tam and melee him to the ground.

Readers, don't try this at home. Vendel is specially trained and a bit daft not to mention very lucky.
Image IPB

I pay a lot of gold at a temple before continuing.

Cythandria.
Image IPB

Slythe.
Image IPB

Krystin should really be ignored but wizard slayer rules apply.
Image IPB

Duchal palace.
Another messy fight. I drop one doppelganger and scare a second before continuing the fight on the two floors above and the floor below. Sarevok resists my vampiric touch and escapes, so Belt sends me after him.
