Expecting to borrow Tamoko's armour.
Need a good dispelling arrow on Sarevok.
Semaj will be neutered with protection from magic.
Tazok will be a lumbering pain.
Need to get a grip of Angelo. Close combat is best but Sarevok and Tazok will limit that.

I stock up on healing potions and arrows before heading into the thieves maze. Two battle horrors are easy, two skeleton warriors much harder even when split up. I trigger one trap (final one, magic missiles) so must remember the others when or if I return.
My plan for the Iron Throne mercenaries works.

Pity I forgot to seek out Tamoko. Back I go. Straight into the fireball and lightning traps. I rest and continue, convincing Tamoko I will help. I set off again, and get another lightning trap very careless.
Tamoko is tough, not a good sign for what lies ahead. Here goes, starting as I had hoped.

As expected, Angelo is a pain. Worse, I release a battle horror. After a circuit I return for Angelo while Sarevok is entangled.

Angelo is hitting at zero distance, then Sarevok breaks free. I have almost killed Angelo but have to run. I manage a lap of the temple but Angelo is playing target practice and drops me.
Out of the challenge but since I got this far
My second attempt ended the same way but I got Angelo on the third go. I had also used a scroll of fire protection that time but think there was still a random bit of luck. Semaj and Tazok went easily after Angelo but Sarevok took my 100+ remaining arrows and had to be dropped with hit run heal.
Too many random elements this time. Not sure there are enough magic protection scrolls to nullify Mulahey, Kysus/Rezdan, Iron Throne HQ and Semaj. Other casters such as Cythandria and Tamoko could be issues too. I still have no good WS strategy against Angelo either, any suggestions? EDIT, a large shield and 1 handed weapon I guess.

You don't need magic protection against Mulahey - just nip in and out of the doorway when spells are coming. Similarly, using the stairs against the Iron Throne party means there's no need to risk any spells hitting (this can also be done against Cythandria). I've never actually tried it, but you could probably use the temple in the same way against Tamoko - though why not just not fight her?
The final battle will be difficult as a wizard slayer. I think I've normally done it as a WS with SCS installed, but I vaguely remember completing it without when the SCS final battle was buggy. I would suggest clearing as many traps as possible from the pillars on the left before activating Sarevok and then using the pillars to try and split up the chasing group and reduce the threat from arrows, while getting the odd attack in on Angelo. In my games I typically had grand mastery in axes, which allowed hard hitting hit-and-run attacks from distance. Arrows of dispelling may well be of use on the others as well as Sarevok (can't remember if Tazok uses a potion of speed without SCS). Running through the central traps to try and web Sarevok is also a viable strategy - if he does get caught you could do a lot of damage attacking him in a short time.

This was an ambush on the first journey made to High Hedge. At level 1 there's no chance of archers, but she wasn't at level 1!
As it was so short I thought I'd have one more go. Progress as follows:
- Firebead (stealth shooting).
- Xzar & Montaron (traps).
- the same ambush triggered on the way to High Hedge, but once bitten, twice shy and she ran the right way this time to get out of range before the hobgoblin with the bow could react.
- pacified Marl, failed to pick Algernon's pocket and killed him instead (turning the inn hostile), gave book to Firebead (you have to be quick here, before he realises he's supposed to be dead), Karlat (backstabs), returned Perdue's sword, the cheap potion worked again in the slime quest, looted potions from Gerard Travenhurst's house, Landrin's spiders (run & shoot), bought short bow +1
- obtained boots of stealth from hobgoblin (trap) returned Mirianne's letter, Noober, baby wyvern (run & shoot), looted invisibility potion from noble's house, Neira (backstabs).
- Oopah (run & shoot), Vitiare (stealth shots), Zordral (backstabs).
- in the mines stealthed through level 1 and 2 and 3 up to the kobold roadblock. Stealth failed there and Umbra was spotted, but she needed to show herself anyway to get the kobolds to move and an invisibility potion allowed her to avoid the kobold masses and get down to level 4.

- there Mulahey followed her out of the cavern before coming in talking range so his minions were generated along the cavern wall (all but one out of sight in the screenshot).

- there was just enough room for Umbra to hide inside then come out and crouch under the door for her to shoot Mulahey without the others seeing
. A succession of shots would have killed him, but at near death Mulahey panicked and ran inside. Unfortunately, as soon as a panicked creature changes areas their morale restores and when Umbra followed Mulahey he got a spell off and she had to use a potion of freedom
Lucky it wasn't a spell she had no counter to. She then managed to hide before being exposed to another spell and finished him off safely.
- after sneaking out the back door Umbra used stealth to loot a couple of useful potions from one tomb
and a mixture of attacks to clear ghasts from another. - back in Nashkel Nimbul received no mercy from the traps created virtually under his nose.
- saved Hulrik's cow (trap), Bentan and Poe were charmed and killed some kobolds for me, but Meilum proved he really is no mug with a sword against them before failing to catch up with run & shoot tactics.

- rescued Samuel, belt ogre (run & shoot), returned Joia's ring, Tarnesh died before traps could activate
, returned Landrin's things, Jaheira was killed by her husband to get her invisibility potion, but unfortunately I then charmed Khalid too quickly after he had killed one of the serving wenches and got blamed for the kill
A visit to the temple repaired reputation at a cost.
Just to clarify the rules I'm playing under. Umbra must take no damage, but in addition she must never be exposed to an attack which could potentially be harmful, i.e. a missed attack roll or a spell saved against. She is allowed to be attacked if there is no chance of harm, e.g. a spell to which she has immunity or a missile attack where she can run away before it hits. She can use her traps freely, but not stack more than one day's worth in a location and not rest purely to get more traps.
She currently has 3 invisibility potions in inventory. The only ambush where she's been forced to use one so far was:

Her current character record is:

Best of luck to you, Grond0, very interesting challenge.
Even though I usually go with a CG character, the Invis 10' radius spell didn't cross my mind. I'll have to decide if I want to go that route on the next attempt (see below) or just burn the 2nd level slot for Invis.
Failed attempt over the weekend: and entirely my fault. Log first:
Action log: Bale ( Male H Berserker )
Added Imoen
Pacified Marl
Fetched Firebead's Book
Killed Karlat
Retrieved Perdue's Sword
Gave news to Mirianne
(Bale L2)
Added Kivan
Killed Belted Ogre
Added Ajantis
Killed Tarnesh
Returned Joia's Ring
(Bale L3)
Reached Nashkel
Tolerated Noober
Corrected Oublek
Met Berrun Ghastkill
Killed Neira (Enrage is nice!)
Added Minsc
Cleared Xvarts
Found Dead Cat
Rescued Dynaheir
Used Tome of CHA
Invaded Ogre River
Killed Neville the Bandit
Killed the Exploding Ogre
Killed Zordral and freed Bentha
Defended Prism
Claimed Prism's Bounty
Returned Kylee's Dagger
Killed Mulahey
Killed by Amazons
Stupid move on my part: I forgot to rest after killing Mulahey, and charged the Amazons thinking I would use the ever-so-helpful Enrage ability... which had already been used on Mulahey. Hold person, game over. But the party was really effective, with Imoen / Kivan / Ajantis / Minsc on bows, and Bale used throwing Axes and tanked as necessary (almost never: with 10 arrows per round at a target, targets didn't tend to get to swing more than once ).
However, the run gave me a formula that I enjoy and generally works for me. So, the next poor sap is going to enter the challenge, a re-run of an old attempt:
NEW ENTRY: Kini II, M E Sorc
But this play-through is not about magery, but about ranged attacks. Expected party:
Kini (darts and spell support)
Imoen (short bow)
Ajantis (tweaked to Crossbow instead of Long Bow... feels more Paladinesque to me as well)
Kivan (Composite Bow)
Branwen (Sling)
Coran (Long Bow)
That should allow me to use pretty much every type of magical ammo available in the game. Maybe I can get over my "hoard-itis" and get better at the attempt. We will see. I don't normally post an attempt until some milestone has been met, but at the moment I feel confident I'll make as many attempts as necessary to go a fair amount into the game.

Poor Tranzig never knew what hit him.

58 Damage!
Firecam then went and killed Kahrk, killed the bountyhunters at Gullykin, emptied the Firewine bridge, hunted for basilisks((also killing the party on that map)), and killed/charmed a massive troop of Knobgoblers on the Lighthouse map.
Firecam then went hunting for Sirines with my army of Hobgoblins. Firecam was ambushed by three Sirines at the beach. They wasted their spells and arrows on my Hobgoblins and then Firecam went in and caused mayhem. The sirines finished off my hobgoblins and I destroyed the three of them. Firecam continued up the coast and charmed 3 carrion crawlers with Algernon's cloak. He sent them North infront of himself and the Sirines up there wasted their spells on the carrion crawlers and were killed by the carrion crawlers as well.

After that, Firecam went bandit hunting.
Firecam was let into the camp of the bandits by a not-so-bright bandit and Firecam planted ideas in the minds of the Chill. Over the next couple of days, the human side of the encampment grew increasingly worried as they noticed the chill sharpening their swords. On day three, the chill attacked with the aid of Firecam. They ran into the tent to find they were in a trap. They ran out of the tent and noticed the humans had grouped outside the doors. They had enemies on two sides. The Chill charged at the host of Taugosz Khosann and fought bravely. Ardrenor killed Taugosz as he became a pincushion. Magic began to be used on the Chill and suddenly, Firecam appeared once more and stuck a poisoned blade into the mage's stomach. He then dispatched Tazok's guards and turned on the Black Talons that were killing the Chill. The battle suddenly turned. After a couple hours of fighting, there were two men left on the field - a bandit and Firecam - Firecam dealt the final blow.

((How's that for RPing?

I'd prefer not to use doors (part role playing, part timing) although the Iron Throne HQ fight over 3 levels was realistic...until they lose sight and stand still instead of searching.Grond0 wrote...

I normally play with SCS final battle installed (which does not have traps in the temple), but my memory of this without SCS is that the magic protection scroll allows you to run through the webs and stinking clouds produced by the traps. There might be a small amount of damage from projectiles, but that should be easily remedied by healing potions.Gate70 wrote...

Afraid not. Use of Bhaal power allows you to get tome of wisdom from the catacombs, but there's no way to get the strength tome unless you've got helpful mods operating. No rings, necklaces/amulets, bracers, cloaks, girdles. Then again, maybe it's because I always answered the same.
I slept twice on the second floor of the mine. BIG mistake. They have lots of troops. I noticed after Harieshan(Female now?) moved from his/(her?) ambush and attacked full force in the second room. No flanking this time hehe. Well, after I killed her(Did Harieshan wear the Girdle of Masculinity/Femininty or something? Or is Harieshan supposed to sometimes be a woman?), I slept in Harieshan's normal ambush site and 15 guards popped up and started shooting poisoned arrows at me so I ran. I then ran into a storage room and slept again to the same result except with no retreat. >_< It was a bloody fight and I came out victorious. 32 guards versus my assassin and I won.(Number revised after counting all the armor))

- evicted a woman from her zombie husband's house.
- recovered a bowl from some fishermen.
- dragged one ankheg guard outside the nest before hiding and charmed the next two. With their help killed all but one of the remaining ankhegs before the allies snuffed it
. The last ankheg fell to traps. Gave the farmer back the body of his son, plus a bit of gold as a consolation prize.- intended to just do a gentle backstab as a warning to a grumpy priestess, but got a bit carried away - anyone want a bowl?

- at Ulgoth's Beard Dushai got killed by some summons
and the other gnome fell to stealth shots. Stupidly though, I had not identified the ring of wizardry and didn't have enough money for the green amulet so had to go away again (and be exposed to more ambushes).- charmed Zargal and got him to kill his followers. Then charmed Bassilus's undead and set them on him.

Unfortunately Bassilus managed to cast sanctuary and escape. Using stealth shots he was lured onto a full set of 4 traps laid earlier. That took him to near death and a Bhaal drain life finished him off.

- successfully revived Melicamp.
- dealt with some wolves in a lighthouse.
- sneaked into a pirate cave and removed the treasure (had no confidence in Umbra's ability to take on the sirenes).
- escorted Brage back to the temple.
- Found a dog for Albert. Then used Algernon's Cloak to collect the bad guys from the map together and kill each other
, leaving Zal to be finished off with stealth shots.- Caldo & Krumm were charmed and helped clear the map before turning on each other. A girl gave me her allowance for fishing her cat's body out of a waterfall.
- at the gnoll stronghold Gnarl & Hairtooth played the escort role, although Umbra only bothered going to pick up the tome.
- on the map to the north the mountain bear initially took on the bridge and was then replaced by an ogre berserker. It managed things very nicely - killing the hobgoblin elites before dieing of poison.
One of the ogre berserkers also had a potion of invisibility, which is a very rare (and welcome) random treasure. I suspected the merchant would try and withhold his boots, so just charmed him and picked his pocket.- helped Drizzt with some gnolls and then took out a party waylaying travellers. A couple of traps dealt with 2 of them immediately;
the mage was protected by his buffs initially, but was caught by the fallback pair of traps. Algernon's cloak then provoked civil war in a clan of half-ogres.- Bjornin was happy to hear about the half-ogres and got Umbra up to reputation 20. She was feeling tired from her journeying so had a rest and then trapped Tranzig.

- belatedly turned in Bassilus's symbol for the reward. Then, with nearly 50,000 cash available, went back to Ulgoth's Beard and bought the greenstone amulet and ring of invisibility.
Next up the bandit camp.

Str 19, dex 18, con 19, int 11, wis 7, cha 11.
* 2HS, ** longbow, * 2H style.
Wizard slayer equipment to collect.
Armour. Ankheg plate, to upgrade via Taugosz Khosann then Tamoko.
2HS. Candlekeep. Upgraded via Arghain, to upgrade via Centeol.
Helm. Candlekeep, to upgrade via Balduran.
Composite longbow. Candlekeep, to upgrade in Beregost.
Boots. To collect via Mulahey, Nimbul and Drasus.
Potions. Healing, antidote, elixir of health.
Scrolls. Green magic, petification, fire, poison & cold.
Possible extras. Horn and claw of Kazgaroth.
Once I have plate armour and an unbreakable sword I head into Nashkel mine. Level 3, 33hp THACO 18/14 & 1APR.
I try to swipe Mulahey but he is moving too quick. I switch to my longbow and disrupt his first spell, but not his second. I can see the hold person coming so switch to my sword and retreat as far as I can.
I am alone when the spell hits, and relieved to see Mulahey doesn't follow me. I recover and hit him with another arrow, killing him.
For reference, the positioning was something like this (harder to replicate when he is dead.

I hit a Nimbul image, then he scares me. I get two sets of magic missiles before recovering. I run off, glug some potions and heal. He gets four more sets of missiles as I glug, then tries throwing axes at me. He then runs to the inn and I follow. I take a few moments to kill him, allowing another conversation to start.
Great, now I have to fight Neira while badly wounded. I pop outside, then back in, then back out. She follows, continuing her casting without interruption and before I can swing she holds me.

I didn't even want to fight her and she has demonstrated why not. Not sure whether to try another wizard slayer.

Hard luck. It always annoys me when opponents do that - suppose that's the advantage of using a script rather than detailed controls. What I normally do in that sort of situation, to almost eliminate the risk, is pause on exit and then right click to re-enter the building. The distance you need to travel varies a bit from place to place, but moving like that gives a following opponent very little opportunity to cast their spell. They are also unlikely to follow you back in because you will have disappeared before they reorient and target you again.Gate70 wrote...

You might want to consider a dwarf. Even though the reduced strength handicaps your attack a bit, I think that is easily outweighed by the +5 to saving throws (beneficial to all classes, but particularly the wizard slayer because of the inability to use most other protections). If you use the Claw of Kazgoroth as well you should be able to get your save vs spell down to 4, which gives you some sort of chance if exposed to spells. Not sure whether to try another wizard slayer.

At the bandit camp things went well to start with. Umbra sneaked into the main tent and successfully charmed Raemon. That meant the others would not go hostile at sight so they were all charmed as well. I thought it would be safe to get them to kill each other and started with Raemon (with Umbra out of sight to avoid triggering dialogue). With him dead I expected the rest to be simple, but unfortunately they started turning hostile one by one - I think SCS must have added a trigger to their script for Raemon's death.
Umbra had to use one of her precious invisibility potions to avoid being targeted, but even that was only a partial solution as the remaining opponents all had the SCS follow script which make them cluster round the opponent even when invisible. Making sure not to let Umbra get surrounded she led them off in and out of several of the other huts and eventually managed to leave all of them behind before returning to the main tent. A semi-success in the end then, although the treasure gained is not adequate compensation for the loss of an invisibility potion.
Sneaked through the Cloakwood. My only real concern here was reacting fast enough to phase spiders teleporting in at the start of Centeol's map, but Umbra managed to hide immediately on arrival before one turned up. With the ring of free action protecting against webs from ambushing spiders Umbra had no problems getting through to the mines.
I wasn't bothered about the rest of the characters from the party there, but wanted the boots of speed from Drasus. I was hoping for an easy kill using the following strategy:
1) Recruit some allies from the surrounding map to act as distractions.
2) Lay a full complement of traps at a distance in case Drasus talks and then chases Umbra.
3) Try and charm Drasus from range before he talks; if successful then can easily charm the rest and get them to kill each other.
As it proved things were not at all easy. Drasus saved against charming and started talking before Umbra could move back a step, which activated the others. Unfortunately, although Umbra had not been quick enough moving away to stop Drasus talking she had prevented him from targeting her and thus the traps were wasted on Genthore. His screams alerted Drasus who was the first out of the gate. By this time he had taken a magic shielding potion (so could not be charmed) so Umbra let the charmed guards have a go at him. That didn't last long after Rezdan and Kysus both cast chaos on the melee. Kysus then used a sunfire, but didn't quite manage to kill any of his allies.
With everyone else dead and Drasus bearing down on him Umbra travelled back to the previous map to give time for buffs to wear off. He collected a fresh set of allies then used a charge from ring of invisibility (to avoid worries about stealth breaking at the wrong time) to scout the area. Rezdan and Kysus were both visible so there was no danger of them popping up at the wrong time. Umbra used a wolf to pull Drasus out of the way, then tried to charm him unsuccessfully 3 times. At that point Drasus ignored the remaining fodder and latched onto Umbra. I considered using an invisibility potion, but decided to just run for it. This is nearly always safe if you take constant short steps in a straightish line (pausing helps with this).
However, I have occasionally been attacked by a faster opponent doing this, so was very glad to make it to the edge of the map again. On Umbra's return the map had reset. That meant Drasus was now uninjured again, but more creatures were available for Umbra to charm. This time she was successful in luring Drasus away from his fellows and charming him. Rather than risking combat with the rest of the party I set Drasus up to attack a few wolves with his fists and just took the equipment from his gnawed body.
Umbra planned to stealth down through the mine, but a couple of hiding attempts failed trying to get past the ghasts. I should have just used the ring of invisibility here, but thought opening the door to the kitchen might give her another opportunity to hide. However, the guards were too close there and she was now spotted from both sides!

A belated charge from the ring meant she was safe from attack, but was still boxed in. At this point I seriously thought the game was up for a few minutes as the bad guys would not move until she rested, which was obviously not possible there. However, I finally thought she might be able to chop her way out. The first attempt got a ghast to badly wounded. Umbra immediately took a potion of invisibility and hoped the brief sight of her might result in opponents moving out of the way; there was a bit of movement, but still no way out so she tried a second backstab. This was also successful and she vaulted over the ghast's body and was round the corner and successfully stealthed before anyone could react.

She moved on down to confront Daveorn. After briefly showing herself and waiting for the web and stinking cloud sequencer to expire she went in search of Daveorn. He was hiding in a corner and shooting at the battle horrors did not get them to chase her, so she finally tried a backstab. This worked very well as Daveorn used a dimension door to go down next to the exit - just where she wanted him. The battle horrors followed Umbra up to the next floor, but without Daveorn their SCS scripts don't work properly and they were mercilessly chopped down while they stood there gormlessly.
With Umbra standing on the exit point there was no chance for Daveorn to react to frontstabs before she disappeared again and in due course Daveorn fell.

Umbra tried pulling the mustard jelly out by charming Stephen, but he didn't last long. However, a few stealth shots dragged it away from the treasure chests eventually to allow her to loot them.
On exit from the mines Umbra had a nasty shock, though clearly not as nasty as those faced with a wall of freezing water in the mines.

I was obviously concentrating so hard on escaping from the ghasts and guards I forgot entirely about the need to talk to the prisoners
Umbra has now safely arrived in Baldur's Gate. She's currently got about 90,000 XP, so still has 2 levels potentially available, though I'm not sure if she will reach the cap in BG1 or not.

Firecam continued his trek through the Cloakwood Mines. He used his last poisons on a mage and an Ogre Mage on the 3rd level. He emptied the bunkhouse and then went through the door to find Davaeorn. He was waylaid by a guard that quickly agreed to help Firecam. Firecam disarmed the traps. He then ran back and sent the guard in platemail forward as he re-hid in the shadows. Davaeorn took many hits due to his mirror image spell but the last one chunked him.

Firecam is now maxed at level 10 - 161 000 XP.
After that, Firecam did some work for the thieves guild and then for the Flaming Fist. He killed Sarevok's goons on the top floor and chatted with the leader of the Iron Throne that noone really cares about and stole some hard evidence. He then revisited his old home.

Stats (charisma tome consumed).

Used a charge of Kazgaroths horn. Only ever used these in my first few runs, so not sure how they worked. This looks to nullify level 1 & 2 spells entirely, priest and mage. Extremely useful.

Saves improved by +2 with level up.

It's certainly a good option for a wizard slayer who can't use anything better. It's effective against relatively low-level casters who can be killed quickly, but the 3 round duration and the self-damage it causes can be a problem against mages using stoneskin and mirror image, particularly if you don't want to use area transitions to break the combat up.Gate70 wrote...

Firecam escaped Candlekeep with barely a scratch.

He reached Baldur's Gate, saved Duke Eltan, killed Sarevok's Mistress on the 5th floor of the Iron Throne, and helped the Shadow Thieves kill the assassins in the Undercellar. Firecam charmed Quenash and moved her to be beside Slythe and the other one. Then the nine hells broke loose and and the assassins killed 90% of the people in the Undercellar. Firecam led Slythe away from his companion and ran into a room and quickly hid in the shadows. He backstabbed Slythe and continued the process with a different room. that time he missed and Slythe chased Firecam into the sewers. Firecam hid in the shadows before Slythe came down the stairs and went back up them.
In the center of the undercellar, HE RAN INTO SLYTHE AGAIN! This one had full health and full combat protections again. Dopplegangers? He ducked and dodged and backstabbed as the cloudkill spell in the middle of the undercellar continued to kill courtesans and lords. 5% of the people in the undercellar at the start of the fight were still alive when Slythe died to a hit of 92. Firecam ran into the middle as the cloudkill spell stopped working at about this time and one shotted her. Firecam picked up all of the equipment on the ground and ran into his sewer escape again to find Slythe living. ((I found a bug! Is this with EasyTutu or the Baldur's Gate 2 engine?)) I used the doppleganged Slythes equipment after I killed him. ((Now I have two short swords of backstabbing + 3.
Then came the dreaded battle in the Duchal Palace with 6 Greater Dopplegangers and a shadow over your head of the fact that your life depends on the dukes - if they both die a godly force intervenes and rips you to shreds.
Liia died and Belt was near death when the last Greater Doppleganger fell to the floor. Belt read the documents handed to him by Firecam and Sarevok attacked Belt. Good thing Firecam's poisoned blade was still in effect and he hit Sarevok for 20 damage plus a few poison damage. Sarevok ran away without Angelo even laying a finger on a single person.

Just killed Tamoko in three hits. My charisma wasn't high enough to influence her descision of attacking me.
Now, I'm outside of Sarevok's Temple with the above inventory except I have Balduran's Cloak on and an AC of -2. I also bought a short bow to use those dispelling arrows.
((Do you guys think I'm ready to fight Sarevok yet?))
