Nice going so far, Grond0, good to see you're still alive - your random party is really different from what I usually roll - I almost never get arcane spellcasters, and if I get one he/she is often a multiclass with a surprisingly low int. You have no fighter-type character though (I can't think of a randomized party where I didn't at least have one) - and 3 potential thieves, like I did ;) Wow. Lots of controlling to do!

With low-int wizards, I usually never even bother to try learning any spells without int 24. At least you didn't roll thieves with 9 dexterity. While the classes might not be that balanced, your attributes seem really good.

By the way, my Cleric, Adrastos, also used the Ankheg plate (in BG2) for a long while, because of the strength issue (I think he had strength 9), so Bulwark is in good company ;)

Once my all ranger party bites (assuming it does), I might try an all random party myself. I will probably write a program to generate it for me, just so I have it for future use.

that the skeletons would only become hostile if they heard Bassilus call for help (which he obviously could not do). That seemed to be the case: in fact all the skeletons in hearing range died after Bassilus was killed.

Brilliant.

If you would care to share, I would be happy to have it (source or compiled) as well. I've been too lazy to write one myself, and that's been the main reason I haven't tried to random party yet.

New entry, modifying my format a bit: mix of my action log and some journal-type entries.

NEW ENTRY: Ranke H M Berserker
Stats: STR 18/55 DEX 18 CON 18 INT 16 WIS 15 CHA 3
Proficiencies: Axe *** Hammer *
Current Party: Ranke, Jaheria, Khalid, Imoen

Action log: Ranke ( Male H Berserker )
Added Imoen
Found Rings of Protection, Wizardry
Returned Joia's Ring
Killed Tarnesh
Added Jaheira & Khalid
Downed the Belted Ogre
Pacified Marl
Acted as Firebead's Librarian
(Jaheria D2/F2)
Killed Karlat

"After realizing that Jaheria was easily the most capable in combat, I quickly asked her to replace me as lead warrior in the party. She agreed, with the stipulation that she could borrow my armor until we found something to her liking. I agreed, and even threw in my Ring of Protection and helm into the bargain. This turned out to be a good move, as there was a dwarf assassin waiting for us in the inn where we stopped to rest.

Despite my optimism at four to one odds, and belief that Jaheria was more than capable on the front lines, it took two of our precious healing potions to keep her alive. She was even capable on the spell front, using Doom to make Karlat somewhat less formidable of an opponent. In the end, we prevailed, and I now have Chain Mail to wear instead of the leather jerkin.

Even so, we sleep uneasy in the inn tonight. Tomorrow's plan is to spend much of our remaining coin on equipment, and start heading towards Nashkel. Jaheria and Khalid want to investigate the goings-on in that outpost town of Amn. I prefer to get as far away from cities as possible, and Nashkel sounds like the kind of minimal town I might be able to hide in or around."

I've learned to just run from all Cloakwood ambushes. You can run N to avoid the Ettercaps, and WSW to avoid the Wyvern/Spider ambushes. Otherwise, you burn too many antidote potions and (can) add a lot of risk for very little reward.

And my current perfect (losing) streak continues...

Killed by (of all things) a single Ankheg

Freak death. Popped down in the hole to get the Farmer's boy, and the Ankheg at the start of the map immediately locked onto my poor sorc. Two straight hits, and my attempts at drinking a healing potion didn't get through before death got there.

Grrr. Until then, things had become a cakewalk, with Coran & Kivan mowing things down with bows, Ajantis tanking, and Kini and Imoen blasting stuff with spells. Oh, and Branwen was there too. ;)

You hit two nerves with one post After5CST.

Cloakwood ambushes killed a promising party a few weeks ago.  I was trying to go get Coran and Yeslick and add them to my party early in the game.  Stupid Ettercaps! I hate those things  and I hate that those two NPCs are there in such a 'high-level' area of the game.  I'd regularly play them if it weren't for that but between the Cloakwood Ambushes and the Drasus, Rezdan, Genthore and Kysus Assassins making entrance to the Cloakwood Mine so difficult I never get either. By the time my party is strong enough to go to the Cloakwood, I'm settled with my party and don't wanna add them.  But I guess I'm just whining.

The second nerve, I guess is the one all you regulars feel but I'm only beginning to understand.  "Freak Deaths...Grrr."  I got killed by Revenant the other night and couldn't sleep for hours afterward.  I knew I needed a magic weapon to kill him but since I'm playing 'Hard Times' mod those are hard to come by.  Don't know why I risked it but I did - guess I thought Imoen could kill him with her +1 Short Sword.  LOL

The source code probably wouldn't be of much use (I will write it in QuickBasic, ancient compiler). However QuickBasic can make an EXE, suppose I could do that. If others are going to use it, then I guess I better take into account class minimums, which initially I wasn't planning on doing.

Also, just to be clear, the program wouldn't generate it directly in BG 2, you would simply input the randomly generated character into BG 2 manually - was this what you were expecting, After5CST? Off hand, I was thinking the program would show the random character on screen and sent to a text file - this way it could be printed and then inputted into BG 2 off the printout, in case you didn't want to alt-tab between BG 2 and the program.

Basically, the program saves you from having to roll dice a ton of times -- which is even more true if you have to generate a full party. My intent is also to take account the race restrictions e.g., an elf can get DEX 19 but not CON 18, etc. Also my intent is the proficiencies will be assigned by the user, the program would just generate the race, class/kit, and stats. Ranger's racial enemy and also thief points also intend for the user to set those.

@CKT - sorry about your incident with the Revenant -- you do realize that magical AMMO will also hurt the revenant? Surely Thalantyr or Thundersmithy have some for you to use, even with hard times.

EDIT: Also Branwen's special ability is a magical hammer which would help in that situation.

I guess that's why they call it random!  My settings provide that each character has around a 1/3 chance of being a warrior-type (race is generated first and the chances for classes are then independent for each race).  That chance is a bit higher than either mage-type or rogue-type, so it was a bit of a surprise that there were 4 mages and 3 thieves, but no warriors.

You would be welcome to mine if you're interested.  It's an Excel spreadsheet, but rather inefficiently written with lots of If statements in - that results in a size of 32 MB (6 MB when zipped).  You can PM me with your email address if you want it.

Edit: just seen Corey's post.  My spreadsheet does not generate stats randomly in the same way as the game (mainly because I was not sure how the parameters interact for this, e.g. which stats get increased if the total would be less than 75).  There is an alternative random facility for stat generation built in, but I sometimes just use the game's normal roller instead (as with my current run).

There are various ways to deal cheesily with him, though it's probably easiest to just nip in and grab his stuff and out again. If you do want to fight you might want to investigate spiritual hammer, which should fit well into your RP style. Bulwark has used it extensively in my run so far as he gets it as a free spell (as Priest of Tempus), though it probably won't get much more use now that he has Bassilus' hammer.

Grond0 -- my understanding is that the computer will take 7 rolls and then drop the lowest one and use the other rolls. There could be a minimum too, but not aware of it if so. The computer also bumps any roll below the class minimum for that stat.

EDIT: I also agree with you, no reason a person couldn't just use the first roll for their random character in BG 2 rather than use my program for that. Also decided to do the racial enemy for rangers after all, thought of an easy way to program that.

There's definitely a minimum of 75 across all stats (at least in the BG2 engine), but I'm not sure how any required adjustment is made. I suspect it might be something like bump up the lowest stat and, if it reaches the next lowest, bump them both - but I'm not sure.

Grond0 - maybe the computer just keeps rolling until it does get 75 total. After all, that takes no time at all when the processor calculation is measured in gigahertz.

Maybe start another post about coding up a random generator. I'd be happy to contribute (my coding experience is 1980's BASIC and 99% mainframe since then so probably not the best person to try it in java or similar). Will have a fiddle with a spreadsheet first, <6mb sounds a fair challenge.

I gave Thunderhammer Smithy an ankheg shell for 500 gold, then he never let me get that option again! Tough lesson to learn, but I'll remember it now. Would have nice for him to craft some armor, but now that option is gone. This is a bit different than vanilla. The armor wasn't critical to my game plan, and everyone's strong, so plate plus ring +1 is good enough.

Fairly sure this is specific to EasyTutu so you could always try BGT if it will upset future runs.

Your description in the earlier post was pretty much what I was expecting.  Program generates random race / class / kit / alignment / stats / etc. and then we just enter it in via the game.

Dang, you've got me thinking about the order of rolling for different modes (you get a significantly different mix if you randomly choose race before class vs. class before race, as an example).  It's going to get hard for me to resist starting my own app..

If you would prefer that I just use Grond0's spread sheet, I can do that as well.

EDIT: And if you feel like modernizing your skills just a little, you might want to look at Python.  IMO a very worthy successor to QuickBasic and free.  Works well as a command line tool also (which Visual Basic doesn't).

Grond0 saz...
You would be welcome to mine if you're interested.  It's an Excel spreadsheet,

PM sent.

@After5CST -- actually I been toying around with creating the random character generator for a while, and it's a good project to work on. QuickBasic (not to be confused with Qbasic) can compile an EXE that can run from a command line or shortcut. I don't have excel, so can't use Grond0's excel sheet anyways. Exercising the mind keeps the dementia away. (Fun Fact: chess players are 75% LESS likely to develop dementia than non-chess players).

As for python -- I don't really have the time to learn a new language, and I have EXTENSIVE experience with QuickBasic, I can make it do almost anything I want.

EDIT: @After5CST: I totally spaced about the alignment, thanks for reminding me about that.

All this randomization talk reminds the of the old p&p days. In many respects, 'the good old days' of D&D.

In the old AD&D days, my DM watched me roll the dice and I had to keep what I got. Plus, had to keep them in the order they were rolled, so the first three dice went to strenth, next dexterity etc.

If I wanted to play a Paladin but only got 13 Charisma I had to go fighter or choose another class altogether.

The good thing about that was that sometimes I was forced to play a character class I'd not normally choose.

Just reminiscing.

Roland's party continued. So far there was not a single death of any party member.

While in Beregost, they have decided it was safe to take care of the spider infestation in Landrin's house. Minsc lured them out where they were quickly erradicated.
Image IPB

Before taking on the bandits camp, the party started traveling towards the mountains south of Beregost, to learn more of the trade of an adventurer. An encounter with a brutal half-ogre yielded a +1 two handed sword, which could do more good than harm in hands of Minsc, from then on.
Image IPB

In Cloudpeak Mountains, various brigands and wild beasts also yielded good treasure, from magical artifacts such as bracers of archery to valuable merchandise like winter wolves pelts. Reaching level 5, Roland picked a new first level spell - protection from evil, and a new second level spell - Melf's acid arrow.

An especially nasty encounter was a nymph. Although she was unable to cast any spell before being disrupted, his innate magical ability Blinding Beauty blinded 5 out of 6 party members, only Jaheira being spared.
Image IPB

Since the blindness caused by nymph takes a full day to cure, it was decided to camp for 24 hours in the same area. The first round of rest passed uneventful, but the second was interrupted by a pack of gnolls. Guided by Jaheira, the party fled to the nearby mountain area after which they returned fully cured.

After selling the look in Nashkel, the next stop was the Valley of Tombs, a rocky terrain infested with undead: ghouls, ghoul lords and greater ghouls. The two greater ghouls were difficult because they were very fast, and the party members could not outrun them. They run across the entire map with the ghouls on their tails before they could find a good fighting position.

Then Roland's party run into another band of mercenary on their trails. In the lead there was a Cave Bear charmed by Minsc and used for scouting ahead. The two casters of the hostile party could not release a single spell because Khalid, Minsc and Imoen were using their little stock of enchanted arrows while Roland and Dynaheir were using Magic Missiles and Chromatic Orbs.
Image IPB

In the same area there was an insane mage experimenting with some jellies. Although Roland asked about the experiments in a civilized manner, the wizard turned hostile and needed to be put down. He also summoned two mustard jellies who were dispatched with magical weapons.

The Gibberling Mountains area was infested with Ankhegs, in packs of 3-4. Minsc was tanking them while the rest of the party was assisting with missile weapons or offensive magic. Minsc received some serious injuries, but no life threatening because of liberal use of healing potions and Jaheira standing short behind him, ready to intervene with healing spells.
Here is Minsc delivering heavy blows to the foul creatures:
Image IPB

Lena asked desperately to help her husband Samuel, who was dying, and also wanted by the Flaming Fist. Roland could not refuse help, and he was taken as soon as possible to the Friendly Arm Inn.
Image IPB

The result of the expedition in the southern mountains translated into thousands of gold pieces, items and well earned experience.Jaheira was appointed as the party's apothecary:
Image IPB

Roland and his companions gathered around a table in the inn to recolect their adventures and plan the next steps. They ordered Evermead for everybody.

@gunman78: Here's a few tips to make your post a bit more user friendly

If you want your image to show up in your post, do it like this:
{open bracket}img{close bracket}http://i.imgur.com/3ulQk.jpg{open bracket}/img{close bracket}

Using your link, here is an example ( you can see my BBC code if it still isn't clear by replying to this)
Image IPB[img]http://i.imgur.com/3ulQk.jpg[img][/img]

Or if you want it as a link, you can do it this way:
{open bracket}url=http://i.imgur.com/3ulQk.jpg{close bracket}Dead half-ogre{open bracket}/url{close bracket}

Again an example using your link:
Dead Ogre

Hope this helps

EDIT: hmm there's a problem when I try to go to your image, so apparently it's a problem with your source

Sometimes this works, sometimes this doesn't (usually fails on a browser refresh).

I can get it to work at http://www.imagevenue.com/ which doesn't require an account (although it requires to upload in .jpg format), see two posts down post.

After some experimentation, the only oddity I can see is that imgur.com puts uploads into .png format, where at least flickr uses .jpg. Working with the browser, sometimes it can translate the image appropriately, sometimes not... probably something to do with the BB software used here.

Still experimenting, may update this message if I find a solution for imgur.com

Giving up on the image thing.
Action log: Ranke ( Male H Berserker )

Revealed Silke's deception
(Imoen L2)
Found and returned Mirianne's note
Tolerated Noober
(Ranke L2)
Defeated Neira

Image IPB
"Reaching Nashkel isn't enough, it seems. We were ambushed at the local inn by Neira, an evil Cleric of some ability. Jaheria managed to Doom her, but Neira proved her own ability by not only casting Rigid Thinking but then Hold Person on our only spellcaster. Thankfully, a regular barrage of arrows and axes from the rest of us was enough to end her ambush before she managed to kill helpless Jaheria... and then the waiting began. Waiting for the spells to wear off, and then waiting for Jaheria to fill our ears for some time with complaints about our inability to handle such a 'simple' foe without placing her in severe peril."

Action log: Ranke ( Male H Berserker )

"We added a muscle-bound simpleton to the party today, and are delaying our investigation of the mines to rescue his companion. We can only hope that his companion isn't imaginary or another rodent of some kind. Jaheria is somewhat upset with the delay.

"If the girl doesn't learn to duck when things swing at her, it won't make a difference one way or another. She already has used another of our precious healing potions, while helping stave off an ambush by some gnolls and skeletons. Strange things must be afoot."

...
Image IPB
"Despite Minsc using our last healing potion, the combined forces of a Winter Wolf and a looney pair of warriors (one throwing darts) was far too much, and he became the first casualty. Most would still call it a victory, for we gained some magic bracers and two healing potions as spoils. Still, the long walk back to town and dragging Minsc's body along to the temple quelled any thought of celebration, especially after the temple extorted much of our remaining cash to return him to life. Thankfully, the local shop bought the Winter Wolf pelt at a premium or we would have few coins indeed left to our party."

(Imoen L3)
(Khalid L2)
...
"Once again Jaheria used the last of our healing potions, this time against an obnoxious group of Amnish warriors who saw us as little more than barbarians. Sendai and her archer escorts paid the price for attacking, although Jaheria was left half-dead and we were without healing potions. Once again, though, Tymora has smiled on us and given us not only magic arrows, but magic armor for Imoen and another healing potion... now only if the druid will just quit drinking them like they were free..."

Update: Ranke ( Male H Berserker )

"Jaheria finally went too far, drinking the last of the healing potions and then we had no recourse in battle.  She fell, causing another trip to the temple, and another 'donation' to show mutual goodwill.  Thankfully, she has now advanced enough that she has learned how to create magical healing berries, so we have set her on task to keep a constant supply.

"Minsc only grew more savage as we reached the Gnoll Fortress.  Once we had given him some Gauntlets of Dexterity, he pushed his way to the front Fighting the "Dog-Men" (as he calls them), he fought recklessly, ultimately breaking not only his two-handed sword but the additional two-handed sword we brought as backup.  Grabbing a halberd from a fallen gnoll he continued the battle.  We all kept well away, as it was obvious he had never tried to use one before, but his growing abilities were enough to finish fighting our way into the stronghold and rescue the lovely Dynaheir.

Image IPB
"Our elation was short-lived, however.  With no real weapon for Minsc, we began the trek back to Beregost to buy a magical mace for him, and planned to then continue up to the Friendly Arm Inn, where I had stashed some scrolls and a magic ring that Dynaheir might be able to use.  But we were ambushed in route, and about three bandit archers killed Dynaheir before she could react.  Thankfully we were able to defeat the rest and got to introduce ourselves to the temple at Beregost.

After that, the trip up to the Friendly Arm was easy enough and we finally have darts for Dynaheir, a pair of maces (one magical) for Minsc, and are rested again.  It is time to return to Nashkel to root out whatever problem there might be."

Party:
Ranke - Berserker 3
Minsc - Ranger 3
Jaheira - Fighter 3/Druid 3
Khalid - Fighter 3
Imoen - Thief 4
Dynaheir - Wizard 2

Update 3 for random party.

In need of a bit of fresh sea air the group set off for the coast.  They were shouted at on arrival by Molkar, but he was unable to do anything as he was busy clinging to the cliff edge.
Image IPB
His compatriots did not show at all - I guess they all appeared on the sea and drowned!

Shoal is normally just a bit of XP fodder for my solo characters, so it was good to have the chance to free her from the clutches of an ogre-mage for once.
Image IPB

After plenty of running and shooting to disband an ogre clan
Image IPB
the party received some healing from a local surgeon.  Grateful for his help they did not kill him, though it took 114 pickpocket attempts to finish relieving him of the 3 potions in his pockets!
Image IPB
The sirenes in this area are still far too dangerous for this party, so were left for now.

Heading down to the lake they came across Drizzt.  He was far too much of a goody two-shoes for this evil party and was soon (well relatively soon) dispatched.
Image IPB
There wasn't actually much real benefit to killing him as no-one can use his defender scimitar at all and Whisper is not proficient in the use of scimitars for wielding the frost one.  Drizzt's armour is the same AC as ankheg plate, though it is a bit lighter for Bulwark to carry.  The proceeds from the defender scimitar all went to restoring the party's reputation.

In the tombs area silence was used on Narcillicus.
Image IPB
That not only stopped him casting, but also calling out for jelly reinforcements (silence was also used later in a similar way on Baruk and Laryssa to make them easy prey).  I'm pretty sure that silence would also have worked to stop the revenant going hostile, but he got blinded instead.
Image IPB

I don't remember Bulwark being killed before, but there was a reminder here of the fact that he's still pretty squishy.
Image IPB
He tends to close into combat against enemies that pose the party no threat just to speed things up rather than micro-managing a run and shoot combat, but that does expose him to criticals.

The party currently only carries one sleep spell. I might have to add another - this number of kobolds is an annoyance (sleep had already been used on Arghain's ogres).
Image IPB
In the same area I thought silence might prevent Billy and Dribben from turning hostile together, but it didn't.  It did interrupt Ioin's script though so the fight was slightly easier.
Image IPB

The mages are all still on 1st level spells, although the two illusionists are now 5th level.  I'm thinking I will probably upgrade their spell selections when all of them have the ability to cast 3rd level spells.

We had many, many tedious battles with groups of Skeletons armed with Throwing Daggers. Note Jaheira's and my wounds. Throwing Daggers can be deadly!

Coast Way, Lions Way, High Hedge (Chapter 1)

We left Beregost and headed back to FAI to return Landrin’s items to her for which she was grateful. This led a woman who lives at FAI to ask us if we might hunt down some Hobgoblins (Orecai) that were harassing travelers using the road to the inn from the north. The Orecai had stolen a Flamedance Ring from her. We hunted them down and killed them easily. Then we recon’d the rest of the grounds around the inn to make sure there were no other monsters hiding nearby. We then ran into a Dwarven woman, Unshey, who asked us if we could retrieve a girdle of hers that had been stolen by an Ogre somewhere south of the FAI. We agreed to try.

We headed south to the Coast Way and pretty quickly found and killed the Ogre. While in the Coast Way, we were constantly fighting Gibberlings, Xvarts and Bandits but had little problem disposing of them. We returned once to the FAI to rest and return Unshey’s girdle.

Key Event: We ran into a group of Bandits led by a lass in Splint Mail. The Bandits themselves were the run of the mill thugs with short bows and leather armor but the leader had Ice Arrows and that’s a different story. Ajantis and I charged her and Kivan ate her up with arrows. By the time she was dead her baby Bandits were history too. The three of us are a juggernaut, especially with the others providing ranged support too. This is a heck of a team.

We rested and then moved over and recon’d Lion’s Way. Not much to talk about; a few Gibberlings and Xvarts and a wolf or two.

From there we moved to High Hedge. We cleaned the area around Thalynter’s Tower. Skeleton’s and Gnolls were everywhere. They really became tedious to deal with but were never a threat. We did come across a couple of Ghasts and two Huge Spiders which are a little more of a threat and I prefer to avoid. We killed them but the strategy changes with these two kinds of monsters.

Leader Notes: While north of the inn we followed the road a ways and met a Paladin named Ajantis. There was no way I could not take him in when he offered his services but in so doing, I had to release Garrick from his. I told him we may need him again and he agreed to wait at the FAI and work on a new ballad.
