Good luck with your wizard slayer, USSNorway. Sorry that your BG 1 entry is only because of your premature end of your BG 2 run.

Unless SCS "ups" the damage output of wolves (or I'm mis-reading something), I don't see that either could do enough damage to one-shot a 15 hp character without a critical.  Donno.

(Still not active in the challenge at the moment, working on a stats-based (instead of class-based) random character generator at the moment).

Maybe Grond0's character inadvertently exposed his neck to the worg - 1D8+3 damage to that spot should do it. : ) Grond0 couldn't breathe...

We finally killed Teyngen, Jemby & Zekar but it was a rough battle and we took a loss (Jaheira) that only a Priest could help us with. Frustratingly, I'd one this battle but my game froze while I was gathering up the treasure. True to form, the second time out wasn't nearly as easy!

                                                                     Fisherman’s Lake (Chapter 1)

I decided to go fishing @ Fisherman’s Lake next & avenge fellow-Paladin, Bjornin. At Fisherman’s Lake we fought a couple of Ogres & the same number of Ghasts before walking into a raging battle between the legendary Ranger & Drow-Elf Drizzt Do’Urden & ~ fifteen Gnolls. He was aggravated at having to deal w/them @ all & was quickly slicing them down one after another. Nonetheless, he asked for our aid, which we gladly gave. We assisted him in finishing them off & parted amicably.

A few hours later, we stumbled onto Bjornin’s Half-Ogres & destroyed them resolutely.

Key Event: As we were getting ready to finish up, we ran into some tough Bandits, a little heartier than the normal sort. As opposed to the groups of Bandits w/short-bows we normally find, this group contained a fighter, a mage & a Chill Hobgoblin. The fighter introduced them as Teyngen, Jemby & Zekar. When the battle started Jaheira cast ‘Doom’ on the mage & Khalid used ‘Sleep’. The Hobgoblin dropped fast asleep & I ran to finish him, which I did. I then turned on the mage. Ajantis was battling the fighter while, Kivan, Imoen & Khalid were providing ranged support. Jaheira tried to cast a ‘Bless’ spell when we were hit w/a ‘Sleep’ spell. Only Imoen & Kivan avoided it’s affects but, almost immediately, Imoen was ‘Dire Charmed’ by another spell.

Kivan then become embroiled in a long, deadly game trying to keep separation between he & Teyngen as they ‘danced’ around’ Fisherman’s Lake. Kivan was trying use his archery skills to bring him down while avoiding melee attacks. Kivan hit him twice wounding him & then moved into finish him with his Elven Spear. But after taking a blow from Teyngen’s enchanted Broad Sword, Kivan backed off again and finally landed the decisive blow, killing Teyngen. He then rushed to Imoen’s aid. Imoen was desperately fighting Jemby’ suffering the effects of a ‘Blind’ spell & trying in vain to land a blow w/her dagger while avoiding Jemby’s Quarter Staff. Kivan rushed up, aimed & killed Jemby w/his first shot.

Jemby killed Jaheira in the battle. We recovered her body & equipment & returned to Beregost to the Priest at the Temple of the Morning. Next we headed to the Juggler to let Bjornin know he was revenged.

Treasure Acquired: (Legend: Sold (S); General Party Use (GP); Stanley (St), Imoen (Im), Khalid (Kh) etc; Spellbook (Sb): Bastard Sword +1 (Kh); Potions: Healing (GP); Scrolls: Web (Kh), Knock (Kh); Misc armor, wpns, gems, scrolls (S); ~300gp; Party Finances: 3958 gp

Leader Notes: None

Current Disposition: Resting @ the Burning Wizard in Beregost.

Next Steps: NASHKEL.

Game Notes/Questions: We’d stomped Teyngan, Jemby & Zekar a first time but while picking up & sorting treasure my game froze & we had to refight the battle. The second time it was a whole lot dicier.

Drusilla&Friends

Drusilla reached 2nd cleric level (+2 HP), Ulrich and Onesiphoros 3rd cleric level, Jehoash 2nd wizard slayer level (**crossbow now), Padma 2nd diviner level and Junius 2nd archer level.

After completing the minor candlekeep quests and buying a ranged weapon for everyone, the party left the keep. First foe to fight was the ogre, the group then turned south to Beregost.

There, Padma used "sleep" on some spiders and the clerics commanded a bounty hunter. Also, Marl was calmed and a book was brought to Firebead. Now, the group travelled to FAI after killing some hobgoblins and returning a ring. Tarnesh was easily dealt with, his MI was disrupted by ranged weapons and he died quickly. Onesihporos spoke to Unshey, Landrin etc. to receive some more experience and gold.

Travelling back south, the group was ambushed by a lot of bandits. Onesiphoros, Padma and Ulrich died before the party could flee, but their equipment was saved and they were revived at the temple in Beregost.

Further south, some Ogrillions were killed, some Hobgoblins sleeped and some bandits shot. Padma, with her 4 hp, was hit by an arrow and died again, though she was resurrected in Nashkell.

There, Neira was commanded 3 times before she eventually died. The group travelled to the west, fighting some human bandits. While the party split up to avoid melee combat, the mage was commanded and pierced with arrows. The hobgoblin fell asleep thanks to Padma. The fighter was eventually killed, and the hobgoblin wake up, poisoning Onesiphoros, eventually killing him with a melee attack, but the creature was defeated a few seconds after that. Got a wand of lightning here.

Drusilla decided not to return to the temple yet, instead the party killed Bjornins half-ogres and resurrected the cleric. When trying to pick up Melicamp, the party was ambushed by a couple of gnolls and a winter wolf who was commanded and killed (only 150g with hard times, though).
Melicamp was resurrected and Perdues short sword returned. The group talked to Mirianne, Zhurlong, Bjornin etc.
I did the mistake of challenging Silke next - I should note that I am not familiar with SCSI scripts at all (the only time I played with SCSI I only made it to ~level 4 before dying, then the installation crashed and I had to uninstall the mod) - as soon as I saw her using stoneskin I commanded her and ran away, knowing that I wouldn't have been able to defeat her.

Instead, I went to Xvart village, fighting some faster bears and improved xvarts, though I only got experience and a potion of fire protection, thanks to hard times.
When entering the next area, while playing hit and run with some ogres, the group pulled a couple of hobgoblin bandits, eventually forcing them to run.

They went to Arghains area instead, sleeping his minions. Ulrich entered the cave to lure the ettercap outside. With the clerics hold person spells, the party defeated Ion giving them 3 arrows +1 (the first magical weapon). Also saved a cow before returning to Nashkell and quitting the session for today.

The combination of Hard Times and SCSI + the stats of some of the party members makes fighting rather exciting, though I hope I'll have some more luck with drops soon. At least the fact that I don't know SCSI scripts and have no idea what items I'll get with hard times + item randomizer makes it impossible for me to do any metagaming ;)
I wonder if I should spend some of my precious money to identify the wand of lightning or if using it would be too risky, even outdoors.

That looks right to me.  I think I must have kept my missile weapon equipped (+4 to hit and damage) so a maximum hit from the worg would have exactly taken out his 15 HPs.

Ooh, didn't know the ranged weapon penalty applied to damage (I knew about the to-hit penalty already).  That's an important detail to know... might explain some things.

Yes - it can be handy to use against enemies as well. For instance one of the tactics I use against ankhegs is to run backwards and forwards to persuade them to switch to their missile weapon before quickly closing to melee range. That normally means they only hit on a critical, while my character probably does around double their average damage for a few attacks (before doing the cycle again).

Grief's ecstatic crew initial update

With my installation working again I thought I'd generate another random party.  Grief has put together a pretty well-balanced party of like-minded individuals.  The information is copied from the formatting produced by Corey's random generator (I've just added the names).  The headings all line up in the original notepad document, but the value for spaces used in the forum is different making them slightly distorted,

Good luck Grond0. Woe and Rue look like your best characters. "Sorrow" is a great name for your berserker, not sure what you do with a zerker with those stats, I think most of the time I might just throw darts with her and let her be. : ) Despond should be a good contributor too, though only natural I guess with the highest point total.

Did you use the option to force weapon assignment before style? It looks like it, but no way to know for sure unless you tell me.

EDIT: Racial enemy "ghoul" should be quite useful in BG 1.

I suspect Woe will get hold of some bracers eventually to improve his dexterity, so he should certainly be a good contributor. All the others have potentially useful roles as well:
- Grief can do some buffing before leading from the rear!
- Sorrow has her rage - so she can battle on while everyone else lies down to sleep.
- Gloom can also buff as well as opening locks.
- Rue is the source for all things arcane (well at least the few spells left to a transmuter!).
- Despond should do a nifty line in traps.

The weapon proficiencies are fully randomised.

Tonall the thief and his party of misfits continue to make progress...

So Tonall tried to head to the gnoll fortress to get the gauntlets of dexterity -- wasn't sure for who, since almost everyone needed it. : ) But in any case we get to the gnoll area on the south edge of the overall map (the one with the girl and her dead cat) -- the party is tired as the dickens. So I try to rest. Gnolls appear (of course), we use some spells, loot and try to rest again. Gnolls appear again, this time no spells, so a thief dies. We tried to rest ONE more time ,and Tonall almost bites it as you can see below:

Image IPB

We go through so many heal potions it's scary...we had enough and went to a temple, raised the thief, came back, and proceeded to the gnoll fortress, WHILE TIRED, rested there. We did get the gauntlets so guess it wasn't in vain...

To illustrate my party's "weakness" I'll discuss this incident. On the way to the mines got ambushed by some skeletons, one of the weaker ambushes. There was no way I was going to let a bunch of skeletons intimidate us -- results below:

Image IPB

Keep in mind the health shown for shown is for 4 potion uses and 2 heal spells during combat! And we had a party death! I can see in BG 2 this party might be a lot stronger, but still a long way till then...during this fight, the two skeletons with composite bows were like supermen compared to my party members...eventually Lyroc the half-orc cleric used her noggin and summoned a magical hammer to whittle these things down to dead.

BloomUD1;

Location, Lost!
After doing my chores and setting out on the road we were both ambushed & I must have got turned around somewhere in the dark because come the dawn, my foster sister Imoen found me sitting by the side of the road. After a brief chat it seems she got worried about me and I remembered Gorion aka Dad saying something about meeting up at the FAI.

Location, FAI:

Image IPB

The bad news is Gorion isn’t here yet & an assassin named Tarnesh makes me think all mages are a little reckless (or perhaps it’s a human trait?) anyway the stupid bugger tried to jump me in plain view of the guards with predictable results. The good news is aunty Jaheira wants to help me search for dad but I had my doubts about Uncle Khalid & pointed out to them that Twin-blades is a flashy combat style better suited to solo adventuring and inappropriate for group tactics... come to think of it, he took rejection surprisingly well.

p.s. despite mucking around with a spell-book Imoen still doesn’t realise her magic endowment but I’m not going to ruin the surprise because Gorion once told me that learning something about one self before you are ready is just as dangerous as remaining ignorant... He loves to say a lot of cryptic stuff like that to me.

P.P.s.

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

The first photo was only a ruff copy but I'm happy to pass these ones on if anyone wants to look like Orlando.

I did manage to roll up a random party myself, however I feel that in my particular install, essentially vanilla BG1+ToTsc, the ambushes are much too much. I've decided to go a different route and play a First Roll Party game. Essentially, I pick my classes/proficiencies...etc, however I do not alter the statistics (Str, Con..etc). I'll play this in parallel to my new F/M/C.

Grief's ecstatic crew update 1

"I have to report a sad loss.  My guardian, Gorion, has been foully murdered!  At a moment's notice he dragged me away from my home seeking a place of greater safety, but I fear none such are now to be found.

In recent years Gorion had gathered a group of friends around me, claiming that they were his students, but in retrospect I believe he was planning for this day as none of them were interested in academic studies.  We are all now adrift in a dangerous world.

How I wish now that we had paid more attention to the lessons offered by the Gatewarden and Jondalar.  The truth is that most of us don't know one end of a bow from the other and those skills are sorely needed now.  Only Despond claims to have learnt anything from all our adventures so far, but to be honest there is hardly any change even in him.

My tracking skills showed signs of many bandits using the road to the Friendly Arm Inn, where Gorion urged me to head, so we have ended up being driven south to Nashkel.  Everywhere we go there are monsters lurking as well as assassins paid to take my head.

I fear for the worst and feel in my bones there will be no rest for me until the peace of the grave."

Adventure notes
As an essentially good party Grief and his friends won't be killing anyone for the hell of it, so Firebead was left alone.  Only under provocation, such as impugning the honour of Woe the paladin, will the party threaten violence to those not already hostile.

Grief has only come under attack once when a ridiculous pathfinding choice (by a ranger!) took him into range of a gibberling.  One of the things I don't like about party play is the chance of pathfinding errors is far greater unless you're prepared to use extreme micro-management.

Here's Despond after his level up gave him a whole extra HP.

The other potentially dangerous moment (other than the gibberling) so far was when the party clashed with Zordral.  He ran away after the initial combat and a bit of stealth scouting failed to find him.  The party then made their way to the top of the map to engage a host of kobolds thinking that Zordral was unlikely to have wandered that far.  However, he had.  Fortunately he latched on to Woe, who was the only party member that would have survived the barrage of magic missiles.  That was Zordral's last offensive spell and running and shooting saw the end of him.

@ Shadow_Leech07. A possible alternative if your particular concern is ambushes would be to choose only your main character (to make sure they are not too squishy) and then randomize the others. Whatever you choose, enjoy!

That's not a bad idea. I'll definitely consider it. I'll have to think up how to properly do it in my own weird way but yes it's a good idea thanks.

Tonall and his band of misfits - FINAL Update

The party tried 3 times to get to the Nashkel Mines (Surface), but each time got ambushed had to use a lot of resources, so ended up comeing to carnival to rest and try again. Finally 3rd attempt we get there. We enter a house and started to battle some wardogs. Almost immediately, Tonall with his 20 HP (he got some bad rolls be an level 4 thief with 18 CON) got one-shotted by a wardog -- had no idea they could hit so hard.

Hard luck Corey. I've always found it strange that creatures without weapons (such as dogs and gibberlings) can do more damage than those with them (such as xvarts and Tasloi). Hope you get a group more to your taste next time.

What's ironic is I have multiple people with Katana proficiencies, yet there are no katanas in my installation...I really need to add the feature so not randomize katanas for vanilla bg 1 weapons lol. What's nice is Dodger with his 19 DEX, halfling and sling proficiency, he should actually be able to kill things! Quite a change from my last party...I would much rather have a party of fighters than thieves...this will test my skills (or  lack thereof).

Life continues to be harsh and cruel and it is only thanks to the mysteries of fate that I and my companions still survive.  I have sought over the lands for help in our plight, but few encounters have resolved peacefully.  A clash with villains named Zal & Vax ended the lives of half our party and only the good offices of a nearby priest allowed recovery.

Near a local lake we came across an adventurer named Drizzt.  From his looks Woe felt sure that he would be evil, but it proved otherwise and we helped him in combat with a large group of gnolls.  Nearby though Woe indeed discovered evil lurking and 'twas thanks to our good transmuter that the party survived.

We have brought a few other glints of light into the world, such as finding a lost dog for a little boy and rescuing a mage from a gnoll dungeon.  However, I feel that all our deeds amount to little against the weight of evil in the world and are like to prove futile in the end.

Adventure notes
Made the mistake with Zal & Vax of attacking when fatigued and low on spells.  Even needing criticals to hit Zal was no problem as he has no distance attack, but Vax was a different story.  He failed his save against 1 command, but just survived that.  Sorrow then tried to lead him into a trap, but he switched from melee to darts and within a few seconds two of the party lay dead.  Sorrow did eventually get him close enough to the trap to finish him off, but she also expired immediately afterwards when her rage ran out.  In the same area Sendai was a bit rude, but we let her get away with it.

Near Drizzt Woe's detect evil confirmed that a party was up to no good.  Grief therefore felt justified in ordering Rue to blind the mage and archer before talking to them.  Woe had failed earlier to check whether a gnoll was evil and as a result let a flesh-eating monster escape.  At the gnoll stronghold Woe got a significant upgrade with bracers of dexterity (and also boosted his charisma up to 18).  He is now happy to melee with 1 or 2 low-level enemies, such as gnolls or xvarts, but could still do with a good HP roll at the next level.

Grief was the last of the party to get a level, but made it in the end.  Everyone now has just under 4,000 XP.

 Roland continued...

They headed to the ruins of Ulcaster, fighting through orcs and undead. In the dungeon they run into skeleton warriors who were unforgiving. Dynaheir used the wand of summons until she ran out of charges, then the party had to retreat as the skeleton warriors were too tough and were making minced meat out of Minsc.

The party headed to the village of Gullykin, where another band of bounty hunters on their tracks has been dealt with without much problems.

Under the village of Gullykin there was an ogre mage and an acolyte, and their reign of terror was ended.

Roland and his friends then started to travel through the Firewine dungeons, and although Imoen was cast invisibility upon and scouted to detect traps, a lighting trap has been triggered before being detected and zapped Jaheira, who was the first to need Raise dead. Deep inside the tunnels, a pack of Kobolds including some Kamikaze Kobolds was encountered. The kamikazes exploded, nearly killing Dynaheir, but everyone make it out finally.

Near the bridge, a Vampiric Wolf Lord was a difficult encounter. It frightened Dynaheir who running around attracted a nearby Desert troll, after which it made a Howl from the Grave, summoning 4 zombie wolves.

Defeating the beasts without anyone in the party dieing, Roland attained level 7. His selection of spells is as following:

After Firewine Bridge, the party headed north towards Beregost and Friendly Arm Inn, with a stop at High Hedge, where Roland purchased the Robe of Good Archimagi.

The next stop was the Cloakwood Forest, in order to follow the tracks of the Iron Throne. In areas full of traps, the tactic was casting Invisibilty on Imoen and sending her to clear the map of traps, then the party swept the map of beasts.

Centeol was dispatched fast:

Deep in the Cloakwood Forest, the Shadow Druids were a constant hostile presence, Amarande, the Shadow Archdruid himself attacking the party:

In the fourth area of the Cloakwood Forest, five Cloakwood Shadow Druids were preparing a ritual to kill an old aquintance of Jaheira and Khalid. Roland and his party arrived just in time to interrupt the ritual. However, five cloakwood druids were too difficult to be disrupted all at once, so they managed to cast Miscast magic and Insect plague, which quickly spread to all party members. Some party members started to run around without control, a nearby pack of dire wolves, cave bears and a hamadryad being also attracted into the fight.

This was the first time I was almost sure Roland and his companions were not going to make it:

Image IPB

The shadow druids were killed one by one with ranged weapons, but the casters were unable to cast any spells and were taking constant damage from Insect plague. Imoen was entangled by the hamadryad and was surrounded by dire wolves and bears, so she gulped a potion of invisibility to have a chance of escaping. Luckily the beasts left her alone and turned on the others, but Imoen could not keep invisibilty for long under the insect plague, and was charmed by hamadryad. Minsc used his charm animal ability on a cave bear, balancing the odds:

After the wolves were slain, hamadryad was killed with arrows by Minsc and Khalid and the battle was won, not without a lot of sweat.

                                                                         The End of the Run

Key Event: The party of Seth was ROCKIN'!  They tore thru Nashkel MInes like a hot knife thru butter. When they ascended to the Valley of the Tombs (VotTs) Seth decided to drive on a wipe out the evil there before returning to Nashkel for a bit of R&R.

They were doing well enough in the VotTs but knew they still had Lamalha, Maneira, Telka and Zeela to go through and were already a little nervous about 'uncovering the black' that was hiding them.

While thinking about that, they dropped down into Revenants Tomb and things went south in a hurry.

They  knew (because of the 'Hard-times Mod) that they only had two enchanted weapons: Imoen's +1 Dagger and Kivan's Elvin Spear of Entanglement. They also knew that Revenant was impervious to non-enchanted weapons.

But, they tried anyway!!! Why?  Don't know.

First, Revenant landed a blow on Kivan and HELD him in place.  Then he piled on until he killed him.  Then Seth had the problem of recovering Kivan's equipment before leaving to try and get to a Priest (didn't want to lose the Elvin Spear of Entaglement).  Seth tried to slip in and grab it, when he was hit and HELD.  The party tried desperately to get Revenant's attention so that he wouldn't kill their leader. Jaheira died in this effort.

Luckily, Seth was able to free himself and get out of the tomb with four party members still alive.

Wounded, he sent Khalid in to try and pick up Kivan and Jaheira's equipment before they headed back to town.  Somehow Ajantis misunderstood and he went in too.   Before he could be pulled out, he too, was HELD and soon killed.

With three down, Seth and Imoen tried to go in and help Khalid, trying desperately to keep their distance.  But when Seth went in he entered right where Revenant was standing.

At the 'The Main Character Has Been Killed' screen Imoen was taking a blow too and, likely, would have been HELD/killed also.

DARN IT! This was a good party.

@CKT: Didn't this revenant give you trouble once before? Did you see my tips for it I posted for you in the minimal reloads thread?

EDIT: Hmm, must be thinking of someone else. In any case, did you consider magical AMMO (+1 arrows/bullets), Surely hard times doesn't remove them ALL does it from Thunderhammer Smith and Thalantyr?
