Thanks Corey. Yeah, they sell a few in the smithy in Beregost. And they have magic arrows and bullets around, just in very scarce quanities. Still that's the best way to kill him, just keep your distance and pop him with ranged weapons. Magic Missiles work well, probably Chromatic Orb, Flame and Acid Arrows too.

Oh well.

You'll never guess what I'm playing this time. An Undead Hunter. He'll be featured tomorrow.

I pretend Cavaliers are Templars, Undead Hunters/Inquisotors are Teutonic Knights and vanilla Paladins are Knights Hospitaller.

Time for some Teutonic Action!

Drusilla&Friends,

The gnome reached level 2/3 fighter/cleric, Ulrich level 4 cleric, Junius level 3 archer, Onesiphoros level 4 cleric, Padma level 3 diviner and Jehoash level 4 wizardslayer.

The party travelled towards the western cloudpeak mountains, but was ambushed by an ogre mage. He was commanded a couple of times, but managed to blind Jehoash. However, he procceeded to waste his charm spell on the wizard slayer (seems like SCS mages aren't THAT smart) who was just standing around blindly. Before he could use any other effective offensive spell, he was killed via ranged attacks.

In the area, the group ran into some gnolls and a bear, Caldo and his brother, a cave and a dead cat. Nothing problematic going on there.
I decided to travel to the gnoll fortress next to maybe finally get some useful magical items.

The ogrillions carried some potions and, more importantly, bracers of ac for Padma (who has ac 8 now, still not very good). Cleared the caves of some xvarts and a carrion crawler and found a quarterstaff +1 (Ulrich is using it right now). Also defeated all of the gnolls to get the experience for freeing Dynaheir.

The group travelled to the north, where they had an unfortunate encounter with an ogre berserker who managed to hit Onesiphoros for 15 damage - which is, incidentally, his hp. I travelled back to Nashkell for resurrection and returned to the area, killing the mountain bear to get the boots of the north. Also talked to Laurel, which was clearly a mistake: I didn't know my mods would change the encounter, making the gibberlings spawn all around the party. Padma only had 1 sleep spell left, and I wanted to wait for a better position so I could hit more gibberlings with hit, but she got hit and died. Quickly, I had Jehoash take her stuff, equipped melee weapons for everyone and tried to flee to the north, drinking 2 potions in the progress. Luckily, everyone else escaped alive since I could avoid the gibberlings surrounding my characters. I'll have to return later.

Also went to Arghain's area to take care of some unfinished business and killed the ogres left for the quest.

Finally, Drusilla decided to try and reclaim Beregost (after buying and learning an identification scroll for Padma - she also learned horror and web) - she rested with 2 doom spells, 5 command spells, 4 hold person spells and 3 magic missle spells ready to use against her.

While the command spells failed, magic missle and projectile weapons quickly tore down stoneskin and mi.
She used spirit armor and started using another spell when the second magic missles hit her and killed her. The party obtained the golden girdle from her corpse.

Looks better than expected right now. I'll propably try to explore some more wildneress areas, trying to get level 3 cleric spells to be able to better take care of mages.

Dodger and friends update:

Dodger was told by Gorion to prepare for a journey. He got his friends together to go with him. All of them were thieves except for Wise, a wiser mage than she is smart. Someone needed to be the "tank" -- but when they inventory their skills with melee weapons, there was a little issue -- some of us had no melee skills at all, others said they could use a katana, if ever could find one. However the Candlekeep Inn had none. Weakling (a little nickname we have for the half-orc of the group -- although she really is weak, for orc or human) said she learned how to wield a short short, but says a short sword is too heavy for her. She also said she is really good using two hand weapons, but she hasn't learned how to use an actual two hand weapon though.

So even though "StrongMage" isn't the toughest, nor is she even particularly good at dodging, got elected to be the tank since she both knows how to use a scimitar, is strong enough to swing it, and there's also one in the Inn. The mages asked what spells should they learn. We weren't certain, so told them both to memorize armor, and Wise also memorized sleep.

We did a few chores in candlekeep. Was real easy for us. We met a few assasins too, which was scary -- but only for a second, as they assassins both fell to a hail of bullets, darts and arrows. We got the best stuff we were able to use at the Candlkeep Inn and still had money left over. The group is a little concerned for Weakling -- she says when she puts her armor on (leather) she is burdened -- so much she can't even hold a dagger without lagging behind the group! So we gave her a bunch of darts and put her in the back.

Then we told Gorion we were ready to go. Dodger was talking privately to Gorion when Gorion and Dodger got ambushed! Gorion ordered Dodger to flee which he did, but Gorion was slain. Dodger met up with his friends to try to decide what to do. Before they could even say "Candlekeep" who but Imoen comes up -- she's actually a much better thief than most of us, which makes the friends jealous. Dodger said why dont' we kill her? We don't want yet another thief to compete for upgrades. The party agreed and Imoen was slain.

After picking up Gorion's stuff they hit the road. Then Dodger saw two men in the road, who he noticed had some heal potions on their belt. Dodger said, "We'll need those -- we don't have a cleric or druid in our group". The party agreed and slew those two men, though StrongMage had to run for her life. The opposing thief actually put up a good fight, then then wealking hit the thief in a critical spot, killing him. We took the loot and headed east.

We met this man in red robes - we didn't really care he had to say and went into the bushes. We found a ring, although not before having to deal with two wolves. It was difficult but the party managed it and used up some of their heal potions. Dodger then said, "Hey why don't we head to Nashkel, but not on the road? Maybe through High Hedge." The party agreed and headed to Candlekeep. The party got surrounded by kobolds, but managed to defeat them, though only after using more heal potions.

The party eventually traveled to High Hedge, and did some errands in Beregost. We hit the jackpot in Beregost as we got there at night. We tried to get some eqiupment from the Smithy but he wasn't home -- but the Smithy door was wide open! StrongMage went in and picked a tough lock and came out with a magical bastard sword. No one could use though. So StrongMage memorized Identify, rested and then see it's a +1 bastard sword. We took it to smithy and was happy to pay 1250 gold for it.

Dodger was still concerned about healing, so he led the party to the Beregost Temple and got 7 heal potions. Dodger suggested leaving 560 gold in reserve -- he said you never knew when you might get an unexpected expense. This proved prophetic.

The party then hit High Hedge and tried to move south to Nashkel in there. We encountered a ridge and had to move around it, but when we did, we got ambushed by a large group of skeletons throwing some throwing daggers. The skeletons attack was devastating -- killling 4 party members, almost killing Canttakeahit. Dodger was unharmed being the most agile, but his poor friends!

Posted Image

He remembered his cash reserve -- somehow Canttakeahit and Dodger looted all the party's gear, though they had to leave the skeleton loot behind and hit Beregost Temple again to resurrect his friends.

The party then rested in Beregost to consider their options. Dodger realized that undead is bad, bad, for the party, they re immune to sleep, and party doesn't have something helpful like fireballs yet. But human archers would be just as bad. So Dodger told his mages that all their spells MUST be sleep - their only chance to make it to Nashkel was to disable their enemies and not fight undead and when low on sleeps, rest and repeat. So this is exactly what the party did. The party was almost to Nashkel, but then too many kobolds resisted sleep and killed StrongMage. The party carried StrongMage's body to Naskhel and got her raised.

The party encountered an assassin named Neira -- she was very tough, the party coudn't hit her with their weapons at all. She was blinded, but this wasn't helping much -- fortunately Wise came though by using almost all the charges of Imoen's magic missile wand till it disappeared, but that did the job.

The party then headed to the area just outside of Candlekeep to get some more experience they were sorely lacking. Using sleep and resting to recharge their sleep spells, it went smoothly. Some bears resisted 3 sleep spells - the party decided to leave those alone.

The party then cleared the area between Beregost and Friendly Arm Inn, though not without a few visits to the Temple. Dodger insisted on not exploring the area south of Beregost, as they still don't have any good means of dealing with undead, unless there's only one of them.

On one of our trading runs in Beregost we ran into some trouble -- but first, Canttakeahit wanted to pratice his trap laying, so laid two of his special traps near this female minstrel. Then we talked to her lacky -- she wanted us to kill some defenseless lackeys -- Dodger indicated to not do that, as instead the female bard has more loot. She died instantly to Canttakeahit's bounty hunter traps, yielding a magical staff for Wise - the first magical melee weapon for the party (most of the party is level 2, a couple are level 3). There was an assassin in the nearby inn, but he was double-blinded. We sold the assassin's junk, a fighter potion we got from the guys we saved, though we couldn't figure out how or when to use, and got some more potions from the Beregost Temple.

Dodger says the party will head to the Carnival area next, the party could use some relaxing.

I've decided to play a party of randomly generated fighters. Essentially everything is randomized except class(and name, portrait...if one must be strict), which is obviously (Fighter). Only three classes are able to do this and fighter is one of them. I'm sure this can be done for other classes but the sample size of race needs to be amended during the randomizing process. I feel that this is much more suitable to my needs and while the party did have a slight dance with death when they were attacked by thirty bandits, I feel that it was only my mistake of be lazy and "skipping" around like I usually do when soloing which caused this. More patience will be needed obviously.

New Entry:
Riss
Female Human Blade
Neutral Good
STR   12 / DEX   12 / CON   17 / INT   17 / WIS   17 / CHA   16

Randomly generated, 90 point stat minimum, attributes not reassigned.

I haven't played a Bard in the BG world in a long time ( 10 years? ) so this is going to be a challenge.
-----

After escaping Gorion's attacker, Riss spent the evening with her trusty dagger, hidden by the road.  After she was discovered by Imoen, the lovely ladies returned carefully to the area where Gorion was last seen, but Gorion had been killed after apparently felling two Ogres.   Riss gathered a few things from the area, and she and Imoen started heading W back towards the road.

A lean and hungry wolf attempted to make them his lunch, but Riss was just quick enough to stay away from the wolf most of the time until Imoen could bring it down with arrows.  Even so, the wolf managed to land a savage bit on Riss' arm, and it took more than a day for the ladies to bind the wound and rest.

Riss decided that she and Imoen were obviously not seasoned enough to travel outside Candlekeep, and they should be on the lookout for another group to join for protection.  A side benefit of such a thing might be that she might be more difficult to find by her earlier attackers, assuming they still live.

A bloodthirsty pair (Xzar and Montaron) weren't her first choice for companions, but since they seemed to be the only ones in the area, she accepted their offer to join.  Her plan was to continue towards the Friendly Arm Inn to meet this Jaheria and Khalid.  She and Imoen secretly made a pact to keep watch on their own, not trusting their new companions.

This plan turned out to be a good one.  On their journey from the Lion's Way to the Coast Way, they were ambushed by a group of bandit archers and two Ogrillons.  Severely outmatched, the party attempted to flee.  Luck was with them, and they managed the escape, albeit with severe wounds.
Posted Image

After reaching the Coast Way, they spoke to a crazy old man and settled in to camp, hoping to tend their wounds.  After a rest, Imoen pursued a Xvart into the woods, slaying it with an arrow, and then noticed a rock that appeared to be its treasure cache.

Montaron stealthed up to the rock, but it was impossible to investigate the cache without alerting a nearby pack of wolves to his presence.  Imoen drew one wolf away from the rock, and Montaron drew off the other two wolves to the West before hiding and moving back to investigate the cache.  He grabbed the party's second magic treasure (the first was a Wand of Magic Missiles), a magic ring of protection.

However, Imoen was having trouble evading the wolf.  The Dire Wolf being dangerous, Montaron silently made his way into position.  Imoen fended off the wolf as best she could, using Potions of Healing to stay alive until Montaron could make a heavy blow.  Even that was not enough, and it ended up that Xzar had to use his two Larloch's Minor Drain spells to save the day.
Posted Image

After this close call, the group took to the main road, and walked without incident to the Friendly Arm Inn.

Actually we need a tank too -- the PC has the best AC, but he doesn't have any HP and has no clue about melee weapons...if we intend to "sleep" the enemies, StrongMage will tank for a few seconds..but strong ones like ogres, involves lots of running around.

And they had a good time at the carnival -- lots of easy victories vs. kobolds, some dancing with two ogres -- though there was a sour point too - Zordral killed two party members, and in fact feared everyone but the PC and Weakling - PC and Weakling were able to do the job though (with the help of two traps laid earlier from Canttakeahit). But now Wise has a robe to wear, but her 10 AC is still scary - anything can hit her.

Grief's ecstatic crew final update

After clearing nearly all the southern areas Grief came to, ahem, grief against Bassilus. I must admit I was a bit bored of party tactics by this time and didn't bother preparing for the fight or trying to keep him out of harm. Bassilus had already held Gloom and had another spell disrupted by magic missiles (also saved against 4 spells himself) when he managed to ignore damage and complete an unholy blight targeted on Grief ...

Consolations Grond0. Did you ever think of doing a party more your style? e.g., you are usually a solo player, so you might be addicted to the fast leveling (e.g, and hence got bored with the slow leveling of a 6 man party). What about just random 3 characters? Less to manage, twice as fast leveling and can do more of your solo tactics probably.

It's a possibility. I probably just shouldn't have set out to vacuum all the areas. Dealing with something like 15 kobolds or 5 or 6 wolves at each encounter point is far more aggravation than it's worth and gets tiresome after a while. If I'd just gone straight to the main encounters progress would have been much quicker.

Update: Riss

Montaron back-stabbed the mage on the steps, and it was a short battle. Adding Jaheria and Khalid to the party, the group first veered off and helped Joia, and then walked down to Beregost. Taking care of a few minor quests there, they then continued down to Nashkel, sticking to the roads.

At Nashkel they handled Noober and received some equipment upgrades, and Neira fell without too much trouble, although Khalid was held and not feeling too good by the time Neira stopped hitting her. It should have been a foreshadowing of what was to come.

At the Carnival the map was cleared without incident, and the exploding Ogre was put to rest. The tents were left for later, and the group headed down to the mine exterior. At the mine exterior combat went easily, although Khalid stepped a little too close to a Ghast, requiring the first (but not the only) trip to a temple. Greywolf had no chance against Montaron's poison (with backstab) or the numerous dagger throwers (Riss, Montaron, Xzar) and ranged attacks (Imoen with bow, Khalid with long bow, Jaheria with sling).

Claiming that reward, the group was ready to tackle the mines. The mines were no match for the group, until the final showdown with Mulahey.

Normally, Mulahey has never been a problem, but this was no ordinary battle. All attempts to disrupt him were unsuccessful. Due to some pathfinding issues, there was a small swarm of kobolds intermixed with the group around the chest.

Mulahey's first spell targeted Riss, who was trying desperately to use the Wand of Frost to disrupt him. Riss fell victim to Rigid Thinking, and started wandering around with the kobold swarm targeted on to her. Montaron and Khalid immediately changed to melee weapons, to try to draw off the kobolds from our unusable protagonist.

Mulahey's second spell was Hold Person, and both Montaron and Khalid were victims. At this point, Xzar had a brilliant plan (who knew?) and started using his four Larloch's Minor Drains to target not Mulahey, but the kobolds running around attacking the spell victims. He managed to drop four of the kobolds (one spell per kobold), making him an early favorite to with the MVP.

Jaheria went up to engage Mulahey, who managed to get off a Spiritual Hammer and then used Hold Person to incapacitate her, as well. In desperation, Imoen drew her short sword and charged Mulahey, bringing two more of Mulahey's skeletons into the battle. Mulahey responded with another Hold Person, holding Imoen.

At this point (if you're keeping count), the only controllable character is a wand-less, spell-less Xzar. Things looked grim... and the Xzar came through with another inspiration.

He waited, between the lower group of held and rigid thinking victims (Khalid, Montaron, and Riss) and the upper group of held victims (Imoen and Jaheria).

Mulahey and the skeletons quickly killed the helpless Imoen.

He waited some more.

Mulahey and the skeletons quickly killed the helpless Jaheria.

And then, all three targeted their nearest opponent, Xzar. He dashed passed them, into the room with Xan... trying to put as much distance between himself and the lower group as possible.

Mulahey responded with a third Hold Person that seized Xzar, and then he and the two skeletons moved in for the kill. As they moved in, (finally) Rigid Thinking wore off, and Riss was not only coherant, but left alone.
Posted Image
After that, Riss started working on healing herself (Innate Cure Light Wounds, Potions of Healing, and lots of Good Berries), and when the other two recovered from Hold Person, they too made sure their health was full.

And then, the group went into Xan's prison and finished off the (finally) spell-dumped Mulahey and his skeleton soldiers.

And as far as I can remember, that's one of the closest battle I've ever fought in BG. At least that I've fought and won. And the first time I've ever deliberately sacrificed a character that I can recall.

(Epilogue: After that, it was a trip back to town, raise dead on the three, use healing spells/potions to get them up to snuff, and then a quick Montaron poison backstab to clear out Nimbul and reach the inn. A little risky there, but things are what they are. Following this was a trip to Beregost to turn in the ore and chemicals, return Purdue's sword, and meet Officer Vai and Bjornin. Current party quest is travelling back S to try to find Bjornin's half-ogres).

Drusilla&Friends,

Drusilla reached level 3/3 fighter/cleric, Ulrich level 4 cleric, Junius level 4 archer, Onesiphoros level 4 cleric, Padma level 3 diviner and Jehoash level 4 wizardslayer.

The party travelled to Basillus. With the right dialogue options, parts of his army crumbled. With Ulrich using doom, both Drusilla and Onesiphoros did cast hold person, so only the undead had to be defeated until the cleric was all alone. Easy battle with excellent loot (his hammer is set, used by Drusilla right now).

Next, the party challenged Zargal&Friends, luring them out and commanding the first hobgoblin. Meanwhile, Padma's horror spell was invaluable and made the other two easy targets. However, no magical items here. Forther down south, the party also helped Drizzt with some gnolls. Also took Brage back to Nashkell and returned to Beregost.

While travelling to the Carneval after returning the holy symbol of Basillus, 30 bandits ambushed the party and shot Padma, but Ulrich saved her equipment and she was resurrected in Nashkell.

At the carneval, doom + hold person took care of another mage (new robe for Padma). Also killed the ogre and bought the two potions.

Finally, the group explored the eastern couldpeak mountains. Using hold person, command and horror spells, Drusilla attacked Sendai&co successfully, helped a demon find his dog and fought Vax and Zal.

While the dart-thrower was held, the party attacked his companion, but he managed to stay alive with a lot of healing potions. So when the other one got free, he managed to stun 3 party members before his companion fell and he was engaged in hopeless melee combat. Not too much of a threat, but could've been dangerous. Also, no magical items in the entire area except for 18 arrows +1. Hard Times seems to change a lot.

The party finally managed to accumulate some money, but it's not enough to buy anything significant - not with these prizes. Since random spellscroll drops are removed from the game I will propably invest some of it into scrolls for Padma (especially mirror image - she needs a defensive spell).

edit:
Exciting battle you've been fighting there, After5CST. Tactical sacrifices are often difficult decisions to make, but since my credo for no-reloads is that the PCs life is the only thing that counts, no matter the cost, they are sometimes neccessary. You can lose your whole party except for CHARNAME multiple times and still complete the challenge.

Dodger the thief - FINAL Update

Dodger and gang were working their way in the Nashkel Mines. That area with commandos third level, we used a fireball which killed all the kobolds but one commando, who with a single shot killed Canttakeahit -- there's a reason we gave him that nick-name. Well we did kill the commando, but we gathered Canttakeahit's belongings and headed out to resurrect him. This was our 2nd temple run while clearing the mines and we haven't got to Mulahey's level yet.

Somehow Dodger got targeted by a kobold archer. He's still at a point where he can be one shotted by a critical. So he told his party to stay where they were while he fired a necklace of missiles shot. Well I THOUGHT he had  clear line of sight -- but he didn't! So instead he promptly moved forward and before I could pause it let off the fireball -- killing himself.

Posted Image

Apparently I don't need SCS -- random parties are plenty dangerous it seems. I recently made a major re-work of my random generator, this will give me an excuse to test it and generate a new party, but I didn't think I would be needing my generator so soon...

Back to the drawing board...

Sorry for your losses Corey, and Grond0. Random parties have the drawback of being significantly weaker then the traditional party(in both stats and levels generally) and the six party clutter to boot. Perhaps the Palidrome stat style may suit better? I did have some success with a palidrome party but even that game was aggravating beyond belief.

Drusilla&Friends,

Drusilla is now a level 3/4 fighter/cleric, Ulrich a level 5 cleric, Junius a level 4 archer, Onesiphoros a level 5 cleric, Padma a level 4 diviner and Jehoash a level 4 wizardslayer.

The group entered the mines area, fighting some war dogs, winter wolves and eventually Greywolf (doomed and held, halberd +1). They went further to the east to fight some gibberlings and bring Samuel to FAI before entering the northern sword coast area.

Talked to Shoal (with Padma) and used her magic missle to stop his first spell. He was doomed and commanded and soon defeated (helmet of defense). Further south Drusilla fought some ogres before travelling to the brage area again, this time helping the archeologist and killing some kobold commandos (with their first summoned skeletons).

Also, the group finally wanted to clear the Laurel area after having to leave it multiple times. They were well prepared and got lucky, as Onesiphoros and Ulrich manged to summon 4 skeletons, making the monsters easy. From the bridge, it was no problem to pull the gibberlings to Padma for her sleep spells, and the sleeping gibberlings blocked the other ones from reaching the group, finally giving the diviner her vengeance.

@Grond0: It's still early, but I must admit, having a group where everyone can wear better than studded leather if they want to is definitely more to my liking. We've gotten out of Candlekeep, and the chaotic neutral in the group slew Imoen,Xzar and Montaron. We're going to head to FAI early - we aren't afraid of the ambushes this go around with our armor and shields.

INTRODUCING ALEXANDER THE PALADIN UNDEAD HUNTER

Posted Image

Candlekeep (Prologue)

After almost 20 years of studying to be a Warrior-Monk, a Paladin/Undead Hunter, behind the walls of
Candlekeep, suddenly yesterday everything changed. Having already finished my morning prayers I was
just beginning my chores, when my tutor and foster-father, Gorion, suddenly handed me 100gp and told
me we needed to leave as soon as I could ready myself.

Key Event: Twice in the two or so hours after Gorion handed me the gold, I found myself the victim of assassination attempts. I wasn’t even armed except my staff and I was wearing my regular clothing that I prefer when doing my chores so I was definitely vulnerable.

One attacked me when I was checking the security of the Priests quarters. How he got in there without being seen, I don’t know. He managed to cut me pretty bad with a dagger before I killed him with my staff.

The second attacker was in the bunk house, which sleeps some of those who work in more menial jobs around Candlekeep and also serves as the common room for the Candlekeep Inn. Again, I’d never seen him before I do not know how he got in there. This time I finished him without receiving a scratch.

After that, I finished up quickly, received some last minute combat training Gorion had arranged and then
met him on the library steps. We headed out toward Lions Way.

Treasure Acquired: (Legend: Sold (S); General Party Use (GP); Stanley (St), Minsc (Mi), Khalid (Kh) etc; Spellbook (Sb): Potions: healing x2 (St); Misc weapons, gems/jewelry (S); ~45gp

Next Steps: I'll write more later about what , and who,  happened next.*

Game Notes/Questions: Introducing my new PC. First time playing an Undead Hunter. Pretending he is a Teutonic Knight. Can you tell I’m a big fan of the Monastic Military Orders of the Crusades? A little leery of being without the protections afforded a Cavalier (Templar Knight!) but seeing as my last Cavalier was killed by Revenant…

Good luck CKT -- an undead unter is immune to the hold attacks of undead and the hold spell (not holding type spells, e.g., not web) which is quite useful for BG 1. Bassilus, Neira and the Amazon assassins should all be much less of threat since they can't hold you.

@corey_russell. I thought that party would be more to your taste!  Hope you make it through this time.

@CKT.  Give those ghasts a wallop from mePosted Image.

After some recent slow play with a party, I think I'm ready to have another go at a speed challenge.  Looking at my efforts from a few months ago my conclusion was that stealth would be likely to give the quickest victory.  However, although I tried a couple of ranger types I never gave it a go with a thief.

The idea of a fighter/thief is tempting, but I suspect the combat abilities wouldn't make up for the poorer stealth when speed is of the essence.  I also considered kits:
- the bounty hunter would be able to speed up some combats, but be poorer at hiding.
- the swashbuckler gets the same hiding chance and better basic fighting skills, but loses the chance for a quick finish with a backstab.
In the end I've decided to give a standard halfling thief a run.

Edit: I won't have the chance for a straight-through attempt today, but should do tomorrow with a bit of luck.

Condolances and best of luck, corey & grond.

Tactical sacrifices are often difficult decisions to make, but since my credo for no-reloads is that the PCs life is the only thing that counts, no matter the cost, they are sometimes neccessary. You can lose your whole party except for CHARNAME multiple times and still complete the challenge.

This play-through has actually been fairly strong on RP, unusual to me. I was happy to have come up with the 'Draw them away from the held party members' tactic, but then debated it on two issues.

1) Mulahey didn't come back into the main room after holding and offing Xzar. A little unrealistic in all likelihood, but I justified it on two grounds: (a) Mulahey according to the game isn't the brightest of individuals, and (B) Riss managed to recover from Rigid Thinking before Xzar was killed. Even a round or two of Mulahey gloating in the other room would have been sufficient for Riss to down her healing potions and be ready with the Wand of Frost to at the least kill him, even if the skeletons would be difficult.

2) Xzar sacrificing himself seemed ... at odds ... with his character. At least, it did until I realized he had no choice. He couldn't flee the area, there were more skeletons and kobolds by the exit door (and there's no way he would survive it). He couldn't possibly defeat Mulahey, much less his minions, without any items or spells. As a result, his best option was to draw Mulahey away, trusting that Riss would both get the win, and then "do the right thing" (something he despises but Riss does regularly), finding and getting himself raised.

Two side notes:
(1) Larloch's Minor Drain stack, something that surprised me. When Xzar was finally held, he had 24 HP, 8 HP from levels, and 16 HP from the four Larloch's Minor Drain spells.
(2) I'm at REP 16, and am not sure what will happen when we reach the breaking point (REP 18). Montaron and Khalid are already griping at each other. At the moment, Riss is concerned with the party morale, and is ensuring that Xzar and Montaron aren't carrying important items, since she suspects they will either abandon or attack the group at some point. (I don't recall if the mods change the default behavior or not... I don't think so).

A lot of fun thus far.

Good luck Grond0. I agree with your choice that the unkitted thief is very capable, and probably your best bet for what you are trying to do...

However, since you are solo, an incredible idea you could have done is start out as a human fighter! Then dual immediately at level 2 to thief. You get these benefits:
1) You can get 18/xx strength (halflings can't)
2) You get 2 D10 rolls for HP as a buffer
3) only takes 2000 experience to do it
4) You can wear a helmet! And large shield without sacrificing your hiding ability
5) You can use fighter potions (invulnerability potion in particular very useful, but even storm giant strength might help at times)
6) If situation calls for it, you can wear full plate
7) If attacking at long range prudent, can use composite bows

@After5CST: because LMD stacks that's what makes the Foebane so powerful (as Alesia_BH demonstrated in her paladin run), as it does LMD on each hit.

Another random party. In the end I decided to randomise gender, race, class/kit and alignment (using Python code hence the names below) before adding the first roll from the game engine. Proficiencies, stats and spells are selected, ie not random.

This resulted in;

(n.b. his mage spells appear twice on this screen, once as a mage and once as a cleric. Not sure if this is a flaw with multiplayer BG2 or BGT).

Conclusions.
- Party of six with no thief.
- 3 of the party can cast divine magic.
- 4 of the party will be able to cast arcane magic.
- I'm not intending to cast totemic summons in BG1.
- No obvious tank, entire party seem fairly squishy.

I'll report back if they all make it out of Candlekeep.

We leave Candlekeep and head into the outback.

"Listen carefully! Your life is in danger which is why I've hidden you among all these random Bruces and Shelias. We've also walked into an ambush while I was talking, but the two of us can escape in the confusion."

Gorion looks around and realises I'm his only companion. All the other Bruces and Sheila have cleared off.

A huge armoured figure points at me and bellows "Are you Bruce?"

Gorion replies in kind "No, I'm Spartacus Bruce".

The armoured figure strikes him down and declares the job done. A case of mistaken identity in the darkness and made worse for our attacker by the fearsome helmet he is wearing. I'm left all alone until Bruce, Sheila, Bruce, Bruce and Bruce arrive.

We head to the Friendly Arm Inn, picking up a diamond and two rings on the way. An assassin called Tarnesh is quickly defeated.

My game style is going to be difficult here. I normally auto-pause on spell cast and select the next action. That's not going to be easy as I have no idea which Bruce casts what.
