I must admit I hadn't thought about it. The halfling has a significant advantage for this particular task because of the 35% advantage in stealth skills compared to human. I'm also a big fan of the +5 to saving throws (though that's more relevant to BG2 than BG1), but I agree you've compiled a tempting list. Perhaps if Sid fails I'll think about a dualled successor.corey_russell wrote...
Good luck Grond0. I agree with your choice that the unkitted thief is very capable, and probably your best bet for what you are trying to do...
However, since you are solo, an incredible idea you could have done is start out as a human fighter! Then dual immediately at level 2 to thief. You get these benefits:
1) You can get 18/xx strength (halflings can't)
2) You get 2 D10 rolls for HP as a buffer
3) only takes 2000 experience to do it
4) You can wear a helmet! And large shield without sacrificing your hiding ability
5) You can use fighter potions (invulnerability potion in particular very useful, but even storm giant strength might help at times)
6) If situation calls for it, you can wear full plate
7) If attacking at long range prudent, can use composite bows

+5 to saving throws? That's huge, especially for a solo player. There are a lot of enemies who like to cast horror. A fighter > thief is better for melee enemies, but that +5 is better for casters. But with access with fighter potion (potion of magic protection, potion of magic shielding etc.) casters can be dealt with. The 35% to stealth is signficant too.
As you said you made a good choice -- my idea I guess could be a plan B.

Incidentally, the character I use as a tank (if neccessarry) is Onesiphoros, who has a constitution of 7 and a dexterity of 12. He's getting resurrected sometimes, but not as often as Padma (diviner with 9 constitution and no dex bonus either). Drusilla could be better, but I won't take the pc to the front lines in a no-reload if avoidable.
The wizardslayer would be excellent, but his strength of 9 prevents him from using any good armor. He can't even use items to improve his strength, thanks to being a wizardslayer...
Good luck, Gate 70!

Are Wizard Slayers allowed to use Ankheg armor? If so I think 9 is strong enough -- I could have sworn I had Viconia use Ankheg armor and she is also STR 9. If not, sorry to waste your time, but I thought I mention it.

Time to test out our level 1 spells.
Greywolf shrugs off command and sleep but doom and blindness make him an easy dartboard.
Caldo and Krumm require two sleep spells, Sheila gaining a level 2. A dire wolf shrugs off sleep but not command. A second dire wolf succumbs to a doomed sleep.
Totemic Bruce saves against a winter wolf blast as a doomed command allows us to retaliate effectively.

1) First attempt failed in the mine when Mulahey's summons killed him outright before his fireball could fire. I thought he would be safe as he had 29 HPs, but I guess two criticals must have hit simultaneously. Probably should have taken the few seconds to go out and come back in stealthed to be safe.
2) Second time failed at the same battle though this was a bit cheesy. A horde of kobolds followed through from the main caverns all the way into Mulahey's cave, even though Sid was under stealth. As a result he had not killed the kobolds outside Mulahey's cave; that exposed him to the risk of a hold person spell - which he failed against.
I did explore the possibility of a fighter that would dual to thief, but I don't actually think that could be quicker - partly the slight delay associated with getting thief skills back after dualling, but mainly because stealth skills are much worse. I was thinking they were 35% lower than the halfling (25% racial bonus and 10% from higher dexterity), but in addition the starting bonus for the thief is only 20% after dualling compared to 40% on character creation - so the dualled character is actually 55% down. Over the game that would equate to quite a bit of time in failed attempts in addition to the higher risk of getting into trouble.
I'll probably come back to Sid or a similar character soon, but the speed attempts feel like quite hard work so I'll play with this character for a while now. Given the name I'll have to try and keep him safe!

Grond has made a decent amount of progress. Initially he went to High Hedge and killing Shoal got him to level 3 (I had hopes that the 27 HPs gained for those levels would mean I had another exceptionally tough character on my hands, but subesqent die rolls of 1 and 4 have brought him back down to almost average).
Since then he did tasks in Beregost and Nashkel and then headed to Firewine Bridge. I had in mind getting Meilum's bracers there, forgetting that Grond could actually not use them. It was rather a waste of time therefore as the battle took ages. Meilum is very dangerous in melee so Grond could not afford to take him on using his grand mastery in staff and instead plugged away with his non-proficient throwing axes. After that the following battle with Greywolf was a doddle. He is much less dangerous in melee and was quickly taken down without any damage.
Now at level 5 Grond took on the Nashkel mines. I was considering trying to do them by continuing to attack with kensai abilities, but decided not to risk it. A bit of Algernon's Cloak provided a distraction to help deal with the kobold shaman

while dodging in and out of the cave exit and a well-placed fireball left Mulahey all on his own - he died seconds later.

He had cleaned out the ankheg area without any trouble and just worked his way through the basilisks with the aid of a green scroll. He'd also needed to use a potion of clarity to protect against a charm from Mutamin, who had managed to kill Korax. I had it in mind that this potion lasted 10 turns (actually 5) so didn't hurry to go down and take on the party, but finished off the basilisks first. That was a shocking mistake as I discovered!

Seems like a shame to kill off my namesake so early so I might restart him.

We separated the 'baby Bandits' from their leader before isolating on her.

Standing over the carcasses of a couple of Ghouls on the South Beregost Road
Friendly Arm Inn, Lions Way, Coast Way, Beregost, High Hedge (Chapter 1)
Gorion & I headed across Lions Way under cover of darkness. We were attacked by a huge,
armored figure, two ogres & an evil priestess, or so it appeared. I woke to the
dawn knowing that Gorion was dead. Just then Imoen shouted for me & came running up. I was never
so glad to see her in my life. We buried Gorion & gathered his things plus a few treasures left by
our attackers.
We headed for the Friendly Arm Inn (FAI), as Gorion had admonished me. We had to kill eight Gibberlings & four Xvarts to even make it to the Inn. Once there, we were greeted w/another assassin, a mage, but Imoen’s Wand of Magic Missiles & a solid Long Sword took him down.
We met w/Khalid and Jaheira & made plans to head for Nashkel the next morning. While there, we helped a woman, Joia, retrieve a ring stolen by some Hobgoblins (Orecai) just outside the gates to the inn. We hunted them down & killed them, then made sure the rest of the area around the FAI was safe from monsters. We accepted quests from a Dwarven woman, Unshey, to recover a girdle that an Ogre had stolen from her (she said he was south of the inn); and from a Gnomish woman, Landrin, who asked us to exterminate spiders who were infesting her home in Beregost.
We left the FAI and headed south to clear the Coast Way & Lions Way of any dangers that might lurk there. We were successful & in so doing ran down Unshey’s Ogre & were able to return her belt.
Key Event: We had a difficult battle w/a group of four Bandits. The Bandits themselves were the run-of-the-mill thugs but their leader was tougher & was armed w/Ice Arrows which she used effectively. Her arrows surprised us & we took some bad hits so we withdrew. She chased us but was unable to catch us. We rested for a few hours & came back around to attack from a different angle. We were lucky to catch her subordinate Bandits alone and made quick work of them. We finally ran her down &, w/difficulty, were able to defeat her.
From there we headed to Beregost & familiarized ourselves w/the town by killing a fifth assassin who welcomed us to The Red Sheaf when we arrived to get some rest. While in Beregost we dealt w/Landrin’s spider infestation; killed an evil mage named Silke (see Leader Note) and met w/Firebead Elvenhair & assisted him in acquiring a book he desired. We picked up some quests from a Paladin, Bjornin, to take vengeance on some Half Ogres that had injured him; a Gnome, Perdue, who asked us to recover a short sword from some Gnolls west of town & a Hobbit, Zhurlong, who was hopeful for the return of some Boots of Speed that some Orecai in the ‘badlands’ south of Beregost had taken from him.
We went west of town & recovered Perdue’s short sword while battling a bunch of skeleton’s & Gnolls in the High hedge area. While there we met a mage, Thalantyr, who promises to be a good person for us to know. We also fleshed out the party to six by adding an Archer, Kivan.
Treasure Acquired: (Legend: Sold (S); General Party Use (GP); Stanley (St), Minsc (Mi), Khalid (Kh) etc; Spellbook (Sb): Bandit Scalps x 8; Potions: Antidote x6 (GP), Defense (Kh), Invulnerability (St); Tarnesh’s Spellbook w/MM, Web, BHs (Im); Misc armor & wpns, gems/jewelry, potions, scrolls, (S); GP: >1000GPs
Current Disposition: Resting in Beregost.
Leader Notes: I was able to attract a Bard Named Garrick as a follower. He joined us in Beregost after we killed Silke. While in High Hedge we met up with a Ranger/Archer named Kivan who I readily accepted into the party as my Lieutenant. Both Khalid & garrick could wear armor and, in fact, were when they joined us but that keeps them from being able to case spells. I'm training them to fight without armor meaning they both carry protection spells in abundance - shield is good b/c it lasts quite a while.
Next Steps: Khalid and Jaheira are adamant that we go to Nashkel, which we will… right after we clear the South Beregost Road, the North Nashkel Road and go fishing @ Fisherman’s Lake to inflict some retribution for my brother Paladin, Bjornin.
Game Notes/Questions: None
Promotions: Imoen has been promoted to 4th Lvl Th/Sb and improved considerably in Find/Remove Traps, Lock Picking, Hiding in Shadow & Move Silently skills; Khalid has increased to 2nd/1st/2nd Lvl Ftr/Ma/Th and improved the same Thieving skills & primarily keeps Shield memorized as he is unable to use his spells and wear armor too; Jaheira is now a 3rd Lvl Dr and has added Shillelagh, Entangle, Barkskin, Charm Person/Mammal & Flame Blade to her memorized spells; Garrick joined us @ 2nd Lvl Bard but has improved to 4th Lvl and now has Shield & Magic Missile memorized; Kivan came to us at 2nd Lvl but has advanced to 3rd Lvl Ranger/Archer & he’s even better with his Long Bow – that’s just scary. I have advanced to 3rd Lvl Paladin/Undead Hunter and improved my Long Sword skill.

"I remember as a child, pestering Gorion about where we were going. In his pleasant, kind voice he said 'Putting this foot in front of the other.' When I complained that that didn't tell me anything about where we were going, his response was 'Sometimes that is enough.'
"And now he seems to be quite right. Returning to Beregost after Nashkel, a child we met steered us to meet Officer Vai at the Jovial Juggler inn. Following that, we met a wounded Paladin, Bjornin, who asked us to avenge himself on a group of half-Ogres to the South.
"Searching out Bjornin's Ogres took a little time, and most of our healing potions, but by the time it was complete not only did we have some bandit scalps for Officer Vai, we had also met a Drow ranger, who (rather than attacking us) gave us yet another hint about the bandits to the North.
"So, placing one foot in front of the other, we returned to Beregost again. Bjornin was thankful indeed, and gifted Khalid with a magical shield. Moving to Feldepost's Inn, we decided to take the next step and accuse Tranzig on his alliance with Mulahey.
"Tranzig was in a fighting mood, and although we prevailed, both Montaron and Khalid perished in the attempt. I narrowly escaped a bolt of lightning as Tranzig attempted to take us with him to whatever destiny awaits him in the afterlife. So, the footsteps kept going forward as we gathered our possessions and our dead and headed to the temple at Beregost.
"Kelddath aided us with our dead, and was kind enough to not only sell us new allotments of healing potions and antidotes, but also noticed our coin bag was getting fairly empty, and pointed us to an outstanding bounty for one Bassilus.
"Following this next footstep eventually lead us to this madman, a hobgoblin gang, and to a transformed man in chicken form, Melicamp. This next footstep led us back to High Hedge, where Thylantyr was able to help the little clucker, and we were able to both purchase some needed scrolls for Xzar and then travel back to the temple, where we claimed our reward for Bassilus' fall.
"There the footsteps seemed to end, so we went back through Tranzig's possessions. His notes now gave us more specific hints about the bandit presence in Larswood and Pelvdale, so we gathered our provisions and put one foot in front of the other.
"At this time, we have recently arrived in Larswood and are resting, preparing to search the area for signs of a bandit camp. Both Xzar and Montaron are extremely upset with me, but so far have seemed unwilling to do anything about it. Nevertheless, I have severe doubts as to how long this arrangement will last. Long ago, I squirreled away the Ring of Wizardry in my gem bag while Xzar was dead after Mulahey, and he seems to have assumed the ring was lost. Now I have forced Montaron to give the Boots of Stealth to Imoen, which he did grudgingly in exchange for a magic short sword.
"We have a quiet pact on the side between Imoen, myself, Khalid, and Jaheria, and the four of us are taking all watches in the night. The other two, I'm quite certain, probably understand why the four of us volunteer every night, but so far they are content to be the most rested ones in our party, and haven't caused any trouble."

Zal and Vax must be easy targets, especially after Sheila confuses Vax? F/D Bruce has to run first, quickly followed by Totemic Bruce. A nearby kobold kills F/I Bruce then Totemic Bruce while we deal with Zal. The kobold kills Sheila next before we can kill it. We kill a blinded Vax then run as a winter wolf appears. We've grabbed what equipment we can carry, and run from the wolf. Not a good idea to fight Zal/Vax with a level 2 jester and five level 1 Bruces.
400gp later Bruce, Bruce and Sheila are ready to continue again.

Agreed. Myself, I usually leave those two alone until I have access to hold person spells. While being called the fastest dart thrower in the west sounds like a joke, he can devastate a low level party if you don't get a tank on him quick to make him switch to his halberd, which he stinks at using. He's even killed a fairly high level PCof mine before in an earlier run -- due to some pathing issues, my thief who should have been in the back, was seen first and quickly mowed down.

Mutamin and his basilisks are a great start. More basilisks are better. Kirian?
Totemic Bruce is killed by Baerin, but F/I Bruce blinds him in return. Peter has been held while F/D Bruce is thinking rigidly. Kirian is silenced so our priority is Lindin.
Lindin is commanded at the second attempt but F/D Bruce has backed into gnolls. Lindin is killed as Kirian recovers her voice to summon an ogrillion. We're out of spells so target her instead as Sheila sings a confusing song.
Kirian manages two Melfs and two Larlochs so we glug healing potions as we run. Peter has broken free and gives chase, but after three or four volleys our missiles slay him.
We retrace our steps and pick off the remaining gnolls. Kirian Larlochs me twice so I glug the final blue potion and beat the life out of her. Baerin is easy once we dispose of another cave bear and two gnolls.
Another temple visit requires 400gp to raise Totemic Bruce.

- Shoal provided first 2 levels.
- Did some reputation quests prior to going to Nashkel (riding on Brage's wings). After that made sure not to rest, but got reputation up to 20 and did some shopping at Ulgoth's Beard and the Carnival.
- With the desired items purchased Grond relieved Algernon of his cloak and got caught stealing to get reputation down to 9 (in order to acquire evil Bhaal power when finally resting).
- Using scroll of protection from petrification Grond cleared out the basilisk area and finishing off a few oddments at the Friendly Arm and Beregost got him to 7th level.

Thus far it's been a pretty risk-free run. Grond hasn't had to save against any spells (I didn't approach anything with spell capabilities until after obtaining the green amulet) and has only once taken more than half damage (when an ankheg hit twice in succession, but it didn't get the chance to take a 3rd swipe).

during this session, everyone reached level 5, except for Drusilla who's at level 4/4 right now. Padma still has only 11 hp as a level 5 diviner.
The party entered the temple area, using skeletons to take care of the vampire wolves. Next stop was Gullykin where the party had to find out the secret entrance into the dungeon was blocked (don't know which mod does that) - I won't enter any other way without a thief, so no firewine ruins for me.
At Ulcaster, the party returned 2 books from the halfling houses to the ghost, got boots of stealth for Junius and fought some kobolds, leaving the skeleton warrior for later (will propably skip the dungeon). Also, Meilum was doomed, commanded, blinded and killed (cursed spear.+3.. thanks, randomiser!)
Next stop was the ankheg's area, were the party killed the fishermen (new weapon for Onesiphoros!) and entered the lair, using command to keep the ankhegs down. When fighting two ankhegs at once, sleep was more successful. However, at some point two ankhegs got lucky, both hitting Onesiphoros before any of them could be disabled, killing the cleric. Returned to FAI to resurrect him, to Beregost to have the Ankheg plate forged and returned to the bridge to Baldur's Gate to return the bowl and slay some zombies. Also, seems like hard times removes all the great buyable items from Ulgoth's Beard as well. I travelled around, bought a wand of sleep from high hedge and returned to Beregost when the armor was ready.
With nothing not-dangerous left to do, the party finally entered the mines. Padma's sleep was used often, but at level 3 she was shot by two lucky arrows before she could mirror and died with her 11 hp. Since there's no respawn in Nashkell mines, Drusilla went to the temple and returned. To trigger traps, I used Junius (who has the most hp). When fighting the last group of kobolds in level 3, the shaman was commanded, but two guardians managed to hit and poison Onesiphoros, and he died before being able to drink an antidote. Since most of Padma's sleep spells were spent, the party once again returned to the city, revived the cleric and entered the final level.
With some stealth scouting, the last group of kobolds was sleeped by a mirrored Padma. After entering Mulaheys lair, the half-orc approached the party, but not before skeletons were summoned. The party was in a good position, and after a few rounds, Mulahey was held, sealing his fate.
Drops: Rancor +2, belts vs. piercing and crushing weapons, shortsword +1 and some spellscrolls. Pretty nice compared to all the enemies fought before.
Poor Nimbul tried to ambush the party, but Padma's magic missle killed him instantly. Boots of avoidance, yay! (I'm equipping the anti-piercing equipment on Padma unless Onesiphoros is under heavy fire, because it might enable her to actually survive a bandit ambush one day (she died everytime so far)). Tranzig was magic missled and shot, as well.
When leaving Feldposts, the bounty hunters from the gullykin area showed up. The group quickly retreated to the inn, and as the enemies followed the party, they were all held and killed before being able to do anything dangerous (with Padma using hold person as her only 3rd level spell, I have just enough of those to stun a small army).

I agree it could be useful, but it's risky to use as it only protects against L1 and 2 spells. Under SCS spell-casters have a nasty habit of using other ones! Even the lowest-level mages in the game will often use dire charm and hold person on you for instance, while low-level priests will pop up with rigid thinking. With higher level characters (such as all the ones you quote) there is a wide range of 4th and 5th level spells that can cause problems.Gate70 wrote...
Nice going Grond0. With your offensive abilities you could also use the horn of Kazgaroth. That should be enough to deal with Bassilus, Kysus / Rezdan and Ramazith for example while leaving the amulet for more pressing needs.

It's probably best to change your screenshots before you upload them to JPG format (this takes up much less space than BMP and will thus not slow down the loading of the forum pages for other people). You can do this in Paint (as well as crop images, add text etc if you would like to do that).
There are 2 possible approaches to linking your images from your provider:
1) The easier one is to use the options provided. In Photobucket for instance you can click on the links for each picture to display the images in various ways. The most likely ones you'll want for these forums are the IMG code to embed a picture (either full size or thumbnail depending on your Photobucket settings) and the Direct Link. To use the latter highlight text in your post and then press the button looking like a picture of the world and paste the link in the box that appears.
2) Review what other people have done and then copy the format they use. You can see this by quoting a post and then pressing the BBcode button to display original formatting rather than the result.

The Nashkel mines were very straightforward. Just used his staff to mow down the opposition (3 APR with THAC0 of 4). Nimbul hit pretty hard with a skull trap forcing Grond to make a rare use of some healing potions. Tranzig was no problem.
Got a lift from the bandits in Larswood to their camp so that Grond didn't have to fight his way into the tent. A couple of fireballs helped clear the air a bit; Venkt managed to blind Grond, but it didn't hamper him greatly and he soon cleared the opposition (except for Ender Sai who was annoyed at being fireballed, but Grond didn't want to take the reputation hit for killing him). Tunnelled through the darkness to get away from the angry bandits shooting at him outside the tent and headed for the Cloakwood.
Drasus was surprisingly charmed a fraction of a second before he took a potion of magic shielding (I hadn't actually expected that to work). Interestingly he then got confused by spells, so either the potion is generally bugged or the effect was over-ridden as a result of the charm occurring almost simultaneously.
I hoped Grond would be able to finish Genthore quickly with kai, but he took quite a bit of damage himself and retreated to complete the job with a throwing axe. Then moved further away to heal, leaving a couple of guards to soak up punishment from Rezdan and Kysus. Kysus followed with a dimension door before Grond had finished healing and then hit with a nasty lightning bolt (I was expecting a sunfire and had no protection). With hits down to 25 Grond used both his potions of magic blocking in succession. By that time he had drawn out all the nasty spells and was finally able to chew through the mages' mirror images and stoneskins.
During this time Drasus had been off confused somewhere, but Grond now used him to attack a few guards. With Drasus at near death a single swing of Grond's staff finished him off. The transformation elixir let him grab the magic shielding potion nearby and then Grond made his way to the mine.
Hareishan was mainly handled by dodging in and out of the entrance, with green amulet as a back-up. A similar approach used up most of Daveorn's spells before he got clubbed down and a cloud giant strength potion let Grond loot most of his treasure, before heading to the city.
