I guess I actually would visit the firewine ruins if I had a thief - however, without one, I am both scared of traps and two SCS mages who I've never fought before (and, reading your post, at least one of them seems to have a really dangerous script - also, I've always considered the firewine ruins to be one of the most dangerous places even in the vanilla game). The commandos still drop fire arrows and I've managed to gather 40 of them, but I'm not sure how useful they are going to be in the future. We shall see.
@corey_russell: Thank you. The combination of these mods and modes is starting to get really challenging. While I have recovered from worse in previous runs (including getting the whole party except for the pc chunked two times in one run), this is a little bit different, since I'm not allowed to replace characters and don't have access to a lot of potions etc. (and the PC is the character with the second-lowest hp). Also, since things are really expensive every death is a huge step backwards when it comes to finally buying a big item (without this battle I propably would have the crossbow of speed right now). The item randomiser doesn't seem to favor me either, but this has to change at some point since all of the items should still exist in the game, except for those removed by hard times.

Using Ankheg armor and the +1 small shield from Thunderhammer Smithy, I was able to get Viconia's AC to -5. In my party she makes a pretty decent off-tank (ogre ambushes, etc.).

Time for Venkt to play catch.

He survives so we fire a second volley that proves to be fatal. F/I Bruce opted instead to blind Hakt then hold Raemon, just as F/D Bruce heals a wound then kills him.

Britik is doom commanded then Hakt taken out from a distance. Totemic Bruce congratulates us on our first adventure without mishap then opens a trapped chest; not even his boots can save him from the lightning bolt that is released.
Better get him to a temple.

After entering Larswood, the group + skeletons took out Teven, and, with the help of some magic missles, Osmadi. In Peldvale, the leader of the bandits was blinded.
Improved bandit camp was new to me. I didn't know how difficult a frontal assault would be, but I tried it anyway (if I had to do it again I'd certainly choose a different approach). Soon after I hit the first bandit, archers and named bandits (including the ones from the tent) showed up and attacked the party. When retreating, Taugosz was isolated from his army, so I decided to take a chance, I doomed and commanded him, used magic missle on him, but the damage output wasn't high enough - the other bandits were already there. While retreating to the edge, Junius got stunned by Venkt, Ulrich got poisoned and slowed, but Taugosz finally died. However, both Ulrich and Junius shared the same fate, and this time, I couldn't reach their bodies because the party had to leave immediatly, with massive amounts of archers attacking everyone. Luckily, all the others barely managed to escape.
Among the lost items are a studded leather +1, quarterstaff +1, halberd +1, all the magical arrows and the majority of my potion collection. However, Onesiphoros managed to loot Taugosz equipment (including a full plate and a large shield +1), so it could've been worse.
At FAI, the group bought new equipment for Ulrich and Junius and returned to the camp via Peldvale. This time, the main objective was to snipe Venkt. He was fairly isolated, only about ~5 other bandits in his immediate area, so the party hit him with magic missles and ranged attacks. However, he used healing potions, and a firebreath potion was neccessary to finally kill him - not before he managed to stun Jehoash. The wizardslayer was fine, though, because Padma used an extremely effective web, allowing the party to take out a lot of regular bandits before having to retreat again due to a lack of hp and spells.
Some wyvern ambushes luckily were avoided. The group quickly returned, taking on more elites and bandits including Ardenor Crush (who actually dropped boots of speed!). With some additional hold spells and another rest, the camp finally was cleared, and Junius safely looted the chest.
Also quickly took the cloak from the first cloakwood area and defeated the druids to help Aldeth (magic missle + skeletons) and finally bought the crossbow of speed before closing this session.
I am actually surprised to be still in the game - the bandit camp was really tough, and I'm guessing the iron mine will be even more difficult. My party really needs space and some rests to fight effectively, and that's just not something they're going to have down there. Oh, and if anyone has an idea how this group could possibly defeat battle horrors, please tell me.

If your archer can't damage them with ranged weapons I'd buff with various potions and melee with a shield. Strength, absorbtion, heroism, fire resistance, oil of speed. Regeneration as soon as hit.
Diviner can use magic missile, maybe some more. Clerics can summon skeletons so your tank can step back if necessary. Bless, aid, chant will also help the tank. If you can cast slow or greater malison they are useful too.
Edit: Blindness works when doomed. You can then unload spells from a safe distance. I don't think the likes of horror, sleep or command are effective.

Core and gang (Kagain, Viconia, and Imoen the thief) decided it's high time to deal with the Basilisks area. I put protection from petrification on Kagain (via scroll) and just for safety, via spell on Viconia and Core.
The party moved forward and dealt with some gnolls. Then Viconia managed to summon 5 skeletons. This Waterhaven group insulted us, so we sicced our skellies on them. The party ranged, Core threw in a stinking cloud and emotion and Viconia silence and a hold person. Kirian's group could not even take down a single skeleton before expiring, much less hurt us.

After looting, the party stayed here while the skeletons and Kagain started working on the rest of the map. It soon became clear we are not going to be able to loot all the gems and the few minor treasures left. So therefore Kagain dueled Shar-Teel. Kagain won pretty handily. Then I looked at her proficiencies (**** long sword, ** two weapon fighting). A fighter with 17 DEX isn't at least proficient with ANY ranged weapon? I am not impressed with EasyTutu's assignments. If Shar-Teel was proficient with any of them I was going to keep her permanently, so instead she is a temporary member. After clearing the map we went to FAI with Shar-Teel and sold our junk.
It was time for the Cloakwood. Core decided that an extra tank couln't hurt for this leg of the quest, and after we were done with the Cloakwood we would be done with Shar-Teel. As expected she was quite useful in the Cloakwood ambushes.
The first four Cloakwood areas were pretty uneventful, except for one thing. Core wanted a real archer (Imoen doesn't count), and since Shar-Teel can't fill that role well, we recruited Coran in the Cloakwood as a permanent member. After picking him up we did the spider map and then were running real low on ammo. So we refilled our ammo and gave Coran the bow of markmanship. Sure enough, he has the best Thac0 of anyone in the group with a Thac0 of 7.
We eventually got to the Cloakwood Mine Surface area. By the way Coran ALSO had silly proficiencies/skills - despite Coran being a thief and pratically all his points in hiding and moving silently, he didn't get any proficiencies in a weapon that can backstab! Nevertheless we did use his hiding to find Drassus and his buddies.
Our prep was simple, 5 skeletons from Viconia, Core fired a stinking cloud out of sight and backed off. We sent our skeletons forward then the party assisted with ranged fire plus emotion and silence. Drassus party was overwhelmed.

As for the Cloakwood mine itself - there wasn't anything even remotely difficult for this party in the first three levels. We did have to take 2 trips ran out of looting space.
For the last level, Imoen de-trapped the 4 traps and managed to do so without Davaeorn noticing her. Kagain was given a ton of buffs, prot from evil/fire/lightning, greenstone amulet, protection from magic, fire giant strength, resist fear then he charged Daveorn with a few skeletons assisting. Kagain was just too much for Davaeorn to deal with and Davaoern fell.
For the first time, we flooded the mines without saving the slaves. Some party members were complaining about our rep, plus it will go up via several quests in the City of Baldur's Gate. We tried to travel back to FAI and had a close call - Corey got poisoned by a Wyvern -- his health was dropping fast but his antidote didn't seem to take (maybe got interrupted), fortunately Viconia landed a slow poison on Corey. Corey was still very low health and ran away, and eventually Shar-Teel got the Wyvern's attention. We then got to the FAI without further incident.
As promised, we removed Shar-Teel of the important stuff and kicked her out of the party. We will be headed to the City of Baldur's Gate next.
Kagain - level 7 fighter
Viconia - level 7 cleric
Coran - level 5 fighter/level 6 thief
Core - level 3 berserker > level 8 mage
Imoen - level 8 thief

I think I'm about due for a break, but thought I'd have one more run first. I'm going to have another go at a wizardslayer. However, as solo wizardslayer is by no means guaranteed to get through even with perfect play I'm intending to dual to thief at level 7.
Thus far Fizz has safely negotiated Candlekeep, teaching Firebead a lesson on the way. A side-trip to Shoal has got him up to level 4. HPs so far very good - here he is on reaching Beregost; all proficiency points have gone into longsword.

Tranzig was defeated in a traditional way (without running and hiding), and party went to Larswood to get recruited by bandits. But before that happened, Montaron scored a critical backstab – 56 damage. It was wasted on a wounded gibberling, but still...

And now for something completely different – Imoen backstabs a dread wolf for 3 damage (that’s triple damage also). However Montaron’s opening backstab was much better, and it was enough to finish the wolf before Mrtyudasa could apply his stab.

When party arrived at bandit camp and got attacked by Tazok, they run in different directions and hid in shadows. While looting the tents they killed some hobgoblin which made every other bandit in the camp turn hostile. While trying to shoot them one by one they got overrun and Montaron got killed.

Mrtyudasa and Imoen managed to loot his corpse and safely return to Beregost, burying Montaron beneath the walls of Friendly Arm Inn. After rest and some restocking they turned back, intent on employing a devious plan of sneaking inside the main tent, looting the chest, drinking a potion of invisibillity and getting out. It might have worked if they hadn’t been ambushed by a horde of bandits north of Beregost (there were some kobolds too, but without bows). Mrtyudasa gulped a potion of invisibillity and started running. Imoen did mostly the same, only she didn’t have the potion. Funny thing is, she did make it. It was so incredible, I didn’t even make a screenshot.
Anyway, this encounter left Mrtyudasa with only one invisibillity potion, so he decided to stop fooling around and recruited Kivan. Rangers can’t backstab, but can sneak, so he almost fits the party. This time plan was a little more heroic. On Kivan’s part at least – it was he, who was going to go in and shoot everyone, while Mrtyudasa and Imoen Arrowproof waited outside. However, on the way to camp I figured that with his 27 HP (level 4) he’s not like to kill anyone before dying, so the plan changed a little. Whole party sneaked into the tent, fired a round of arrows at the mage, retreated, and repeated this a few times. And now came the more interesting part: Mrtyudasa and Kivan sneaked on the other side of the tent (where they couldn’t be seen by gnoll nor human) and attacked Hakt, hobgoblin archer. Hakt refused to die quickly and nearly killed Kivan.

Then Imoen sneaked in, disarmed the trap, looted the chest and hid with the others. That would be the end of heroics, if not for the fact that Hakt retreated a few paces before dying, which made looting the corpse of his bow a little dangerous. Mrtyudasa devised another heroic plan for his followers – nearly dead Kivan was to sneak to the entrance and stab the human archer with a spear – to make him equip a sword – and run outside while Imoen looted hobgoblin’s body and hid again. Contrary to what should be expected, plan worked flawlessly, and the party got out alive and armed with a powerful weapon.

In the spider location roles have turned and party killed 4 ettercaps from ambush (few spiders too). Rest of the journey was easy and wyverns didn’t put up much of a fight (especially that the large ones were too fat to exit their own lair). Mrtydasa was so drunk on success, that he decided to go even further. After all, how hard sneaking through the mines and assassinating Daevorn could be? Not so much perhaps, but assassinating two guards at the bridge nearly killed Kivan, so the party decided to turn back. There were some wyvern/spider ambushes on the way, but party’s running skills have improved and everyone made it safe to Beregost.
After some deliberations, party decided to do something less suicidal for a change and is set to clear the southern locations.
Current status:
Mrtyudasa – level 5, 26 HP
Kivan – level 4, 27 HP
Coran – level 3/4, 28 HP
Imoen, the Arrowproof Thief – level 5, 33 HP
In the kingdom of low HP rolls, the pink-hooded women is a tank.

- inside the inn the innkeeper runs away from the hostile commoner.
Have you checked upstairs to see if he's run there? I presume that if he had run outside you would already have seen him.
Thanks Grond0. I found the barkeep upstairs like you said. Cool. Will post an update tomorrow. Party's doing fine. It takes longer to write the update than it does to play.
Still, now I feel guilty because I didn't play it through after my Undead Hunter fell. Since I intend to carry him over to BGII anyway (that's always the plan), I could'a tried to get him reinstated/restored. That would'a been fun. Wonder if it would work when I bring the character from BGI to BGII in a fallen status? Bet not many folks have done that.

800gp gets Totemic Bruce breathing again. Necromancer Bruce catches four huge spiders napping, meaning we can talk to Landrin then obtain the golden pantaloons.
Into Cloakwood where we retrieve a cloak and help Aldeth Sashenstar. Seniyad calls up lightning and neither F/D Bruce's helm or boots help much. We quickly doom and command him, but one of the other druids hits F/D Bruce and the hand of submission is held high.
Thought the volley of magic missiles would suffice, evidently not. Not sure whether to roll another random party or do something else.

Gate70: I assumed you knew this but if not: in the BG engine, divine casters have an innate chance to cast despite being hit -- so if you are helping Aldeth, your best best is to kill Seniyad before he can get his spell off, e.g., wand of fire (scorcher mode), wand of frost, wand of heaves, flame arrows, bowmen using expensive arrows etc. Otherwise you risk call lightning hitting several party members. If you can't kill him quickly, then protection on the PC is warranted - protection from lightning from a level 7 cleric would work nicely. Boots of grounding is only 50%, so that isn't a guarantee.

4 sets of magic missiles sounds like plenty, but ONLY if the casters are high enough level (so they get enough orbs). If you only had one level 3 spell slot between them all, sounds like they weren't high enough level.Gate70 wrote...

And good reads for the past few days... far more interesting than my own. My condolances for the untimely ends.
As far as Garden, he's currently working around clearing areas before taking on the bandit camp. Due to my error in reaching the Basilisk map with no way to protect the party from being turned to stone ( three arcane casters, and to my surprise none of them had Protection from Petrification ), and my further error at deciding to attempt the map anyway with Animate Dead skeletons leading the party, I nearly ended this run too.
We managed to carefully clear the map until near the end, when we engaged Mutamin. I underestimated the little bugger (never had a problem there before), and he managed to Horror most of my party, including poor Garden. The bad thing about Horror there is the characters can easily wander off into new nests of basilisks, which caused a quick end for both Imoen and Dynaheir.
Despite my stupidity, though, Garden never managed to wander that direction, and my two survivors (Minsc and Xan) managed to take down Mutamin and his basilisks with the help of the one remaining skeleton. After horror wore off, we made a trip to town to buy a fair number of Stone to Flesh scrolls, before returning to reassemble the party.
The party ( Garden M F/I, Imoen, Branwen, Minsc, Dynaheir ) has proven capable thus far, although with three arcane casters there's not enough scrolls to go around, and they need to rest frequently. Poor Xan isn't carrying his weight yet, but it's largely because he's fifth level, but only has one second level spell (Blur) and no third level spells... most of his spell arsenal is entirely useless.
IIRC the Ulcaster map is at bat, with Bassilus and Melicamp on deck (in baseball terms).

He's still going strong. He dualled at level 7 WS and is currently moving up towards level 7 thief. Progress to date:
- down to Nashkel. Killing Greywolf got Fizz to 5th level and 14 more HPs.
- dragged kobold shaman all the way to the entrance in order to be able to safely dodge his spells. Similar tactics with Mulahey.
- gave revenant back his dagger, but the ghasts were too dangerous in close quarters and kept their treasure.
- picked up Samuel. On the way to Friendly Arm got a couple of belts, though unfortunately Fizz can't wear these. Tarnesh was left for a while
- reported back to the Nashkel mayor, but avoided disturbing Nimbul.
- the main encounters along the southern maps got Fizz to level 6 (back to earth a bit with just the 5 HPs). Moving up the west coast Fizz took on the sirines with the benefit of helm of charm protection. The best location to avoid exposure to their arrows seemed to be round the lighthouse so both groups of sirines were dragged there. Lots of XP rapidly moved him on to level 7 and 10 more HPs.
- dualled at that point and then practised his new found stealth and trap disarming skills in the cave. Both performed well and he emerged into the sunshine already at thief level 4.
- at Drizzt's area he polished off some half-ogres and went to get his reward from Bjornin.
- clearing the wolf pack from the temple (using a few of the many magical arrows collected on his journey for the vampiric wolves) got him to level 5. Back in Nashkel Fizz decided he was ready for Nimbul and a triple damage back-stab did the trick.
- tried, but failed, to revive Melicamp.
- repurchased boots of stealth for 3 times the price I sold them for earlier!
- took no chances with Tranzig - staying close to the stairs - and got to level 6.
- sneaked into ankheg nest and stole their treasure, though left the ankhegs themselves alone for the moment.
- returned a bowl to a priestess.
- Molkar attempted an ambush in the noble's house in Beregost. However, his support crew apparently couldn't find him and all on his own he was easy meet for Fizz.
- bought shadow armour, but still got 40,000 gold available and not too much else to spend it on. Went to get some green scrolls from the carnival, but went into the wrong tent! However, with stealth available decided Zordral should be no problem. Missed 4 out of 5 backstabs and he escaped outside, but eventually tagged him with one of the kobold chieftain's poisoned arrows, which soon finished him off.
- back to the Friendly Arm to deal with another loose end - no mistake with the backstab on Tarnesh.
Probably go to the basilisk area shortly - lots of easy XP there should get Fizz there or thereabouts to recovering his slaying abilities.

There are quite a few you can do that with. Essentially you can right-click (to move onto and then loot without breaking stealth) any container where you are able to move to overlap the same space as it, so long as it doesn't have a lid. You can't do that with chests therefore, but you can with many tables, bookcases and holes in the ground.Blackmalkin wrote...
