Diary of “Mage o the Underdark” Drow Fighter/Mage Neutral Good
Str 18/90, Dex 19 Con 17 Int 19 Wis 18 Cha 10
Day 13
As a youth, Gorion told me again and again that I was well able to overcome the obstacle of my parentage and live a goodly life. I think that he was referring to my Drow heritage, but did not put it in as many words.
I did have my struggles with my heritage, and was not always successful as I had no compunction about stealing a potion of healing, some gold, a ring, and some scrolls in Candlekeep after consuming some oil of speed in the training room. At least I wasn’t caught by the guard.
After the horror of his demise, I made my way to the Friendly Arms Inn, where I recovered a ring for Joia and a ring of Wizardry for myself. I needed it when facing Tarnesh as at that time I could only cast one spell unaided. With its help, I was able to cast shield which protected me from his magic missile spells, and blindness, which enabled me to fight him from a distance. I killed him despite my ineptness with a bow. Of course, being a Drow might have helped as elves are supposed to be adept with such weapons.
I made my way to Nashkel where I helped Prism against Greywolf, and a boy who was running from a dragon. I used charmed people to try and avoid injury myself, but both Noober and Oublek sadly died. At least Noober won’t be pestering anybody else. He really had tried my patience. The death of Oublek led me to finding four emeralds on his body. It makes me wonder if those found on Prism’s body were the stolen ones.
I headed back to Beregost where I calmed Marl down and helped Firebead once more. I ended up in a fight with Silk, and the battle was my toughest encounter to date. I used six of my healing potions, but on the plus side, my quarterstaff is considerably more powerful. I also killed an infestation of spiders, one of which sadly killed Algernon when I enlisted his help.
When attacked by Karlat, once more my blindness spell proved invaluable as he packs quite a punch, or rather, he did.
I managed to help the Dudley family and Alanna’s neighbour. Who would have thought that in a mere thirteen days, I would go from being a nobody to a hero! Some hero, in my opinion, but it’s not my opinion that counts.
Day 22
I have been doing little bits and pieces like helping a widow get back on her feet as she no longer wants to live with her husband. I also helped the girl priestess against Sonner and killed an Ankheg with a knife in its gullet. I tried to help Melicamp but failed. The enemy that hurt me most was the skeletons around High Hedge, but now that I have a belt of piercing, perhaps I won’t have so much to fear from them. After returning with Gurke’s cloak, he appears to have disappeared. I returned Perdue’s sword though he’s still pretty grumpy.

One of our toughest battles to date was the 'Battle of the Bandit Camp'.  This one took everything we had and involved 10-12 Chill Orecai, their leader, Ardennor Crush,  and the leader of the Black Talon, Taugosz Khosann.
 Posted Image

Later we mopped up at the headquarters of the Bandit Camp.

Bandit Trail (Larswood, Peldvale, Bandit Camp (Chapter 3)

After taking time to take in the Nashkel Carnival & add to our supplies we followed the lead we got out of Tranzig. We moved into Larswood via the Coast Way & battled three groups of organized Bandits between the Coast Way, Larswood & Peldvale. The first, in the Coast Way, showed us where the Bandit camp was. We moved out w/all haste to try & catch the Bandit Camp before it moved elsewhere. While in Larswood, we had a tough, unrelated battle against a couple of Druids – weird deal there - but between them & about five bears we had a time of it.

Key Event: We had a monster battle when we finally found the Bandit Camp & stumbled into the heart of it almost immediately. We threw everything we had into that fight to win or die there. We fought @ least 10-12 Chill Orecai w/their leader who turned out to be named Ardenor Crush. The head of the Black Talon Elite, Taugosz Khosann, also joined the fight & kept Minsc & I busy for what seemed an eternity while the rest of the fight raged around us. When it was finished we’d exhausted our spells almost entirely, had quaffed probably 10 Potions of Healing & I’d used my Potion of Freedom to navigate the Web Dy cast on a group of about seven Chill. Really hard fight! We had to return to the FAI & then the Temple in Beregost to rest, recover & resupply before heading back.

On our return we circled around & came up on the command building unnoticed. We really figured they’d be waiting. We sent Khalid in using Boots of Speed w/ the mission to attack whichever target he could determine as the highest payoff & draw them outside. He chose a mage that he attacked w/a Potion of Fire breath. He then came back out w/two of them trailing him – a large Chill Orecai & a fighter of some type – but the mage stayed inside. We pummeled the two that came out. Khalid then charged back in to the building & fired an arrow @ the mage but missed & fell to a Sleep Spell as he emerged from the door. The mage must have been hurt b/c he stayed in the building long enough for us to get Khalid back to his senses & for him, Minsc & me to charge in after the mage before he could buff much more than he undoubtedly already had. We killed him & a large Gnoll almost immediately. We freed a thief named Ender Sai who pointed our efforts toward the Iron Throne in Baldur’sPosted Image Gate by way of the Cloakwood Forest. We looted the building & headed for Beregost.

The final update on Mrtyudasa:

Party returned to Ulgoth’s Beard prepared for an ambush. Before anyone was backstabbed, whole party disappeared from sight by using 3 potions of invsibillity, ring of invisibillity and an invisibillity spell. After some rest at the local inn, they went back and ambushed the ambushers (Eldoth cast a detection spell to reveal the assassins). Attack on the cutlists’ hideout didn’t go as planned. First, invisible Eldoth went inside to find a good place to position the party. Only Mrtyudasa followed, as there wasn’t much room. Unfortunately, a bug prevented him from attacking his chosen victim ('target gone', stated the log), so he fired a fireball from necklace of missles. It alarmed everyone (I suppose it wasn’t exactly a sneak attack), apart from the mage, who wanted to talk first. Eldoth cast invisibillity on Mrtyudasa, rendering himself visible. But Mrtyudasa was blocking enemies’s path, and Eldoth had time enough to summon some wolves (wand). Assassins wasted their backstabs on them, while Mrtyudasa started pelting enemies with acid arrows, and Eldoth produced his harp and dominated the plate-clad warriors. By the time the second one was dominated, the fight was won.

Posted Image

Rest of the party sneaked in to help with killing the mage, who didn’t join the main battle. Before going downstairs everyone gulped a potion of mirrored eyes and an oil of speed. Nobody noticed them as they entered, so they could easily shoot every other, somewhat apathetic cultist, before killing the only one who cared (and triggering Aec'Letec's appearance). Effects of potions of mirrored eyes were already gone by then, so party drunk all three potions of magic shielding that they had left. Alora drunk the last remaining mirrored eyes potion, and Eldoth remained unprotected. Yet again fight didn’t go as expected. Skie was to open the fight with her backstab, while others waited for the demon to turn his back (apart from Alora who still didn’t know how to use a sword). But the demon never moved as Alora hit him with a dart of stunning right after the Skie’s backstab. Aec’Letec didn’t save and was paralyzed (but before that, he managed to paralyze Eldoth, even though he was still invisible). Mrtydasa’s and Imoen’s backstabs were enough to finish the demon.

Posted Image

After that, Mrtydasa returned to some unfinished business in Baldur’s Gate. Fortunately, Sarevok’s ceremony at the palace was postponed a few weeks, and the rogues arrived just in time to have some fun. Eldoth summoned some monsters (OK, lots of them, actually) but as I didn’t bother with positioning them, the fight proved challenging. Alora and Safana were throwing darts of stunning, while Mrtyudasa and Imoen were shooting arrows of dispelling (and then acid arrows) and Eldoth tried wand of paralysis. But none of the doppelgangers were affected by paralysis, so Alora and Safana switched to sling +3 and Crossbow of Speed respectively and Eldoth concentrated on shooting. Liia Jannath was killed and her attackers turned to Belt. It didn’t look so good, but concentrated fire finished the attackers. Of course, Belt was doing his best to get himself killed and found some other doppelgangers to fight. Eldoth cast invisibillity on him, but it didn’t do much good as the idiot kept atacking. Finally, all doppelgangers were slain and Belt was still alive. After Sarevok had escaped, party decided to take an advantage of the chaos and went upstairs to rob the palace. Of course, with all the equipment prepared for the final confrontation, they could only carry the gold.

While pursuing Sarevok, party didn’t bother to stop and fight anything on the way, and safely arrived at the underground temple. Mrtyudasa sneaked towards the enemies, triggering Semaj’s teleport. He retreated and shot Semaj with a dispelling arrow, allowing Skie to stab him, while others fired their best missles, killing Semaj immediately.

Posted Image

Next, Eldoth dispelled invisibillity and Angelo was lured out. There were some problems with hitting him with dispelling arrows, so Mrtyudasa hacked him with a sword, while he kept firing exploding arrows, doing damage to none but himself.

Posted Image

Shooting Tazok didn’t cause any problems.

Posted Image

Then it was a simple matter of killing Sarevok from a safe distance, starting with a dispelling arrow. But Mrtyudasa decided that his brother deserved a more personal approach and led his party for final backstabbing. A web appeared and party had to retreat. Mrtyudasa did not want to rely on save and drunk potion of spell immunity, ruining his buffs. Imoen didn’t make it, but kept sneaking, even though she was held.

Posted Image

After web had expired, party returned to Sarevok and got to work. Skie missed, but Sarevok failed to even notice that. He didn’t notice Eldoth’s attack either, not even Imoen’s who dealt 62 damage with Staff of Striking (not a critical hit). Only when Mrtydasa appeared, misssing his attack, did Sarevok raise his sword. He wasn’t fast enough, as Mrtyudasa gulped an invisibillity potion and tried again. This time he was successfull, and so, Sarevok have fallen after just 3 backstabs.

Posted Image

For some reason, I couldn't make a screenshot of Sarevok's death, but Imoen's backstab was the best one anyway.

Grats on taking down Sarevok with your party of thieves. I tried an all thief MP party one time - they got mowed down by an archer bandit ambush when they were level 1...

You mean the 'We want to die' option? I'm always tempted to use this one.

I didn't even need the whole party to kill Sarevok. It's easy to do with only one thief. All it takes is enough amount of invisibillity potions. Also a potion of magic blocking is useful, so that the web and stinking cloud can be ignored. But I'm not happy with myself, as I had a non-rogue (Kivan) in my party for quite a long time.

I don't think so - I wasn't paying full attention, but I think it was something vaguely insulting that Degrodel took much more seriously than I expected.

Well done with Mrtyudasa and good luck with his continuing adventures.

Congratulations.

Weavel, TN human male shapeshifter. Travelling with Imoen,Minsc, Viconia and Jaheira.

After selling what we can and storing the rest it is time to return to Duke Eltan. He wants us to return to Candlekeep, to which Imoen quickly agrees. She picks up a diamond from the inn and also a second potion of clarity.

I accept a ring from Koveras, then retrieve a letter written by Gorion. Then we are falsely imprisoned for the murder of Rieltar. Tethtoril can see we are innocent, and sends us into the catacombs.

We kill a doppelganger, then Imoen returns with a ring, a magical tome and a protective scroll. She's limping though as she missed a trap and had to rely on her boots for some protection from a lightning bolt.

I sympathetically pat her on the back, almost healing her. Then I send her off to get some more loot.
Posted Image

She's still grumbling so we buff her.
Posted Image

Maybe we shouldn't have bothered, she rushes a bit too quickly and triggers two sets of magic missiles. I heal her each time, and she removes the remaining trap.

Phase spiders converge on Minsc so I shapeshift then think. This could be fun.
Posted Image

Jaheira manages to get poisoned but I cure her. Imoen sneaks through a doorway undetected trap and retrieves another magical tome, a cloak and a couple of other items.

Minsc uses Spiders Bane to clear a horde of ghasts, then we do the same for doppelgangers. Prat is soon silenced, so we kill Sakul, then Tam and Bor before returning to their leader. A few phase spiders are left then we head towards the exit. Only then do we realise we have no scrolls or potions to protect agains basilisks. Viconia summons a trio of skeletons instead and our escape is complete.

Back in Baldurs Gate we encounter Tamoko and discover a few truths. On the way to the undercellar Imoen obtains some scrolls from Degrodel and information from Vail.

Slythe survives doom and command, but not a mighty blow from the strength tomed Minsc. Krystin retaliates with cloud kill and Minsc topples to the floor so we require another temple visit.

Cythandria is next. Then another temple visit for Minsc not having much luck on the fifth floor, or elsewhere really.

Sargiel - Gnome - LE - Illusionist - Update 3

After re-equipping and resting in Beregost the group returned Purdue's shortsword to him and headed south to the mines .. The parties reputation was getting dangerously high (8 :D ) so they needed to move into the next chapter before any accidental do-gooding.

The kobolds protecting Mulahey were slain out of hand. Upon meeting the half-orc Sargiel immediately cast blind which he failed to save. A sleep spell prevented Mulahey's minions from reaching the party while the treacherous priest was destroyed. Kagain was affected by a confusion spell .. but again luckily for the party he didn't take action against them before it wore off. The rest of the mines were cleansed on the way back up to the surface.

Not a bad little session and good to throw off the spell of bad luck encountered at High Hedge :)

I can confirm these are standard BGT
changes and have been there for at least 2-3 years. I had at least two
major rants on these forums about it since then, even went back to
EasyTutu/vanilla for a while as a result.

I had many, many rants about this over the last day, but I've gotten over it.

The heart of the "unfairness" was that the Death Spell opened by Semaj has no saving throw and is guaranteed to kill the target if eighth level or below... which is pretty much any thing but a rogue (or druid if you're using the original druid spell tables).  For Garden, a F/I, his advancement in the lead without a Protection From Magic, Death Ward, or similar guaranteed his death... even if Semaj/Angelo cast *nothing* else.

When you couple that with the Dispel/Remove Magic cast (presumably by Angelo, AFAIK), this suddenly means if you don't have the Protection From Magic scroll, and your protagonist is in the lead, the odds are very good that your death spell protections will be dispelled, and then you will have the unpleasant guaranteed death experience.

On top of that, Semaj fires off the inital Greater Malison and Flesh to Stone, which means you have to make another save at a -4 penalty (or have some kind of protection) or still die.  The ugly truth here is that Semaj's cast of this pair is triggered only at a PC, meaning you can't use a summon to take the hit for you (unlike the other spells above).

There are a couple of approaches I can think of to counter the sequence with a good degree of success:
  • As you mentioned, use  the Protection From Magic scroll.
  • Also as you mentioned, use two Potions of Magic Protection.  I can see no reason why this won't work... but I'm not an expert on the engine.
  • Similarly, send in Viconia (65% MR) with either the Cloak of Balduran (25% MR) or one Potion of Magic Protection (50%MR) to take the initial spell hits, and then she can Sanctuary or similar if you want to get her out of harm's way.
  • Send in multiple summons first, and approach from Semaj's side (trying not to get in Angelo's sight range for Dispel/Remove Magic).  In addition, have Protection From Petrification or similar active.  The Death Spell should kill the summons (and probably waste Angelo's spell on them as they are dyinng), the Protection From Petrification should safeguard against Stone to Flesh, and you'll just have to accept the Greater Malison.
I groused about the necessary knowledge to just start the battle successfully, until I finally decided that (1) the game wasn't really meant for no-reload, and the knowledge requirement reflects that, and (2) the PC has multiple opportunities (the Surgeon,  Hafiz) to both be warned about the difficulty of the final battle and be given magic items that help manage this exact problem.

You'd think that meddling Eliminster might have mentioned something to you about the whole magic protection problem, but no, he's more interested in telling you (like Tranzig, Drizzt, various notes, and various bandits) what general compass direction to go to find the bandit camp.

Oh, back on topic: I started another party led by Stonewall, M D Berserker, but it marched through the game fairly quickly and fell from a combination of overconfidence and not one but two "random" lightning strikes on the PC for a total of about 60-70 damage.

Next approach has already been decided on, but not started.  I'm going to give it a shot with Tril III, a M E Sorc.  The plan with him is to solo for a while, and after reaching level 6 or so start adding party members and preparing for the final battle.  It will be my third serious attempt with the character (I don't count attempts where the character dies before reaching the FAI or Beregost).

I have just installed TuTu and Sword Coast Stratagems. I’ve never played with SCS before, so my next game should be interesting. Especially that I decided to play as a wild mage:

Posted Image

Asati started her adventure by buying herself some darts, as that is her preferred weapon. She rested a bit to prepare some spells – Charm Person and Color Spray – and left Candlekeep. After Gorion’s death she allowed Imoen to tag along. On the way east she agreed to join with Xzar and Montaron. Together they safely reached Beregost, no small thanks to Montaron’s sneaking skills (otherwise they might have been shot by some bandits). At Beregost, Imoen was kicked out of the party, replaced by Kagain. While casting Friends spell, Asati had her first wild surge – she would have been held, if she didn’t save.

Journey to Nashkel took some time, as party decided to kill a few thing on their way, and were retreating to Beregost after every fight. While fighting with some ghasts (with throwing axes and darts mostly) Asati had another wild surge, somewhat more interesting, but not enough to distract the ghast:

Posted Image

Some time later Montaron scored his first backstab:

Posted Image

I have no idea how he could have dealt so much damage. 25 means 12 before multiplication (+1 from strenght). With a simple shortsword and specialization it should be 8 max, I think. Maybe he’s a racist, with some grudge against hobgoblins? I thought only good characters can be racists. Not that I’m not happy with Montaron’s high damage.

Anyway, Montaron got himself a nice pair of boots and his sneaking skill has much improved. Soon after, party arrived at Nashkel and rested at the local inn. Defeating Neira was easy, mostly due to Asati’s familiar and his horror spell (he even dealt some damage).

Everyone is still at level 1.

[*]I know I've this discussed before, but I thought I would mention that I used to run BG 1 with no patch (I can't get the TotSC patch to the install) and TotSc and took no damage from lightning strikes. I also have EasyTutu (again with no TotSC patch, can't get it to install) and take no damage from lightning strikes by the weather. So either the patch adds the damage or a mod does.

Unpatched is OK with a straight run but must make a completionist run impossible.

Weavel, TN human male shapeshifter. Travelling with Imoen,Minsc, Viconia and Jaheira.

More equipment. Imoen plucks bracers archery from Val before Minsc takes a girdle golden from Kirian. We retrieve a few potions and purchase a few more plus some arrows.

Minsc sneaks into the Flaming Fist HQ and re-equips his armour to confront Rashad the false healer. Imoen joins in.
Posted Image

Minsc scares the doppelganger so Imoen kills it with an arrow. Once Duke Eltan is safe we make our way to the duchal palace. I cast DUHM while Viconia aids Minsc and Jaheira casts bless. Five skeletons join the throng as I approach from one staircase and Minsc from the other. Belt starts the coronation as five greater doppelgangers emerge.

Liia dies, but Belt survives and we show him the evidence. Sarevok turns hostile, hits me twice and runs away. Belt sends us after him and into a thieves maze.

Oozes, slimes, jellies, battle horrors and skeleton warriors all fall before us, despite Viconia wall-jumping into the skeleton warriors from the parallel corridor.

Imoen sneaks ahead and stops us from walking into another ambush. We buff Minsc and off he runs. Gorf hits him twice so we hope a pair of entangles sort out the huge ogre. Minsc kills Shaldrissa as Gorf and Rahvin are doomed. He glugs thee blue potions before killing Rahvin, meanwhile Gorf is commanded twice. Minsc finishes Haseo as Imoen kills Gorf, then he criticals Wudei 44, chunked.
Posted Image

Tamoko makages a flame strike on Minsc but he survives and she fails to get up from a doomed command. I move towards the ominous temple but Imoen is more cautious. Even Minsc sides with her, pointing out we are not ready to face Sarevok 63-70k xp in a slug-fest would not be good against these four.

The alternative is to trudge through the maze and do some odd-jobbing.

I'm pretty sure that the one you backstabbed was the hobgoblin archer - that means that the backstab benefited from +4 to hit and damage for a melee attack on an enemy without a melee weapon equipped.

Update for Paragon and his power party.

A more difficult session than I expected this time.

The Iron Throne party were treated to a fireball extravaganza - the combat opened with 3 from wands, 2 from necklaces and 1 exploding arrow.  I thought that would probably kill lots of them, but only the doppleganger died and it took a bit of fancy footwork on the stairs to finish the rest of them safely.

Before leaving for Candlekeep I also decided to activate the Grey Clan quest.  I know there's a particularly nasty battle in this later, but was not expecting any problems at the start.  However, the bandits were tough - even the basic model hitting Paragon for 28 HPs in a single swipe.  By the end of the combat both Exos and Avaunt were dead so a trip to the temple was in order.

At Candlekeep some ogre magi were lying in wait, but they were quickly cut down with the help of a first use for arrows of dispelling.  Since I was going to be blamed anyway I decided Rieltar should die.  The use of webs made that pretty much a formality even before Jack backstabbed him.  There were also no chances taken with the Prat ambush - again webs were put in initially and then a succession of fireballs swept the area clean.  The basilisks were no problems for a few skeletons.

I would like Paragon to get the evil Bhaal power for his last selection so his reputation will need knocking down quite a bit.  A good start on this should be to kill Drizzt at the start of the next session - he's already been put in a cage to wait for his doom.

Well done Blackmalkin and good look with your current run.

My Drow fighter/mage died all too soon. He was held by a ghast. Too much reliance on the high magical resistance. After all, he could have just run, but the high experience was too much of a temptation. Posted Image

At least I hadn't got very far into the game.

I had one amusing occurence.

I had included a micro-mod to give Carbos a Rod of Terror. The result was that my character was running round like a headless chicken. However, since he was only fighting Carbos, that was not too serious. The injury he recieved was pretty horific though, (Over 50%) as in Candlekeep, my HP were pretty low.

Update on Asati, the wild mage:

When resting in Nashkel, Asati recalled that Kagain had some business back north. She talked to Ghastkill to stop Xzar’s whining and took her party north of Beregost, where Kagain lost his interest in missing caravan. Going through Beregost, Asati bought some throwing daggers for Xzar to make him less useless in a fight. Party still didn’t have any cleric, so they went to Peldvale to aid a certain damsel in her distress. Getting to Peldvale was not so easy, though. Party went through Larswood, but when Montaron scouted the area, it turned out there were bandits and dread wolves everywhere. The turned back and run into an ogre. Some gibberlings joined the fight, but where slaughtered along with the ogre without much trouble (though some charges from wand of missles were used). Asati decided to try going through Friendly Arm Inn. At the Inn party was attacked by Tarnesh, but he was horrified by Asati’s quasit and died while running away. Asati was so impressed by the quality of her familiar’s Horrors, that she decided to call him Howard henceforth (or Phillips, depending on day).

When party finally arrived at Peldvale Viconias’s distresser was easily slain, as she commanded him to lie down for a while (some people are absolutely dying to fulfill her wishes). And so, party earned a cleric, but also a plate mail for Kagain (who advanced to level 2 on the way, earning 8 HP). Viconia was level 2 also, with 12 HP. She got equipped with sling and splint mail. Montaron started using a sling, too. He isn’t even proficient, but I decided that being a halfling with 17 dexterity should suffice.

Before going back to Nashkel, Asati decided to earn some money by providing a despiderization service. I suspected that spiders might have learned some new tricks and entered the house with sancuaried Viconia, instead of stealthed Montaron. Turned out I was right – the spiders are now possessed with the mystic power of fitting through a narrow doorway, so Viconia recast her sanctuary (after hitting one of them), grabbed some wine and boots, and retreated. Returning said items provided gold enough to buy axe +1 for Kagain.

Party went back to Nashkel then, fetching Brage on their way. During their side trip, they also slain 2 cave bears, some half-ogres and made a scientific contribution by aiding an archeologist. From Nashkel they went straight into the mines. They managed to reach Mulahey’s hideout safely, using Montaron’s sneaking and backstabbing skills mostly. Xzar nearly got himself killed, when he wandered off to explore (I didn’t expect any pathfinding troubles in such wide tunnels). The kobold party which guarded the way to the last level was lured out to some other part of the mines by Montaron, and Asati’s fellowship could pass without confronting them. Fight with Mulahey went easy, as he didn’t save against Viconia’s Silence, nor against Howard’s Horror. Kobolds where hacked to pieces while Viconia frightened the skeletons. Asati allowed Xan to join the party and decided to exit the mines in same way they entered. Once back in Nashkel, party received a reward and was not attacked by Nimbul, which I found rather scary. Xan was excluded from the party at the Nashkel inn.

Party status:
Asati – wild mage 2, 16 HP (favourite spell – Friends)
Kagain – fighter 3, 32 HP (he invested his third prof. point in axes)
Montaron – fighter 2/thief 2, 12 HP
Viconia – cleric 3, 17 HP
Xzar – necromancer 2, 7 HP

Only 3 wild surges so far, none of them really interesting.

The heart of the "unfairness" was that the Death Spell opened by Semaj has no saving throw and is guaranteed to kill the target if eighth level or below...

IIRC, you can trigger Semaj separately so that the Dispel/Remove Magic won't be a concern.

After5CST wrote...

Wow, not even other party members? That's just broken.

There are a couple of approaches I can think of to counter the sequence with a good degree of success:

  • Also as you mentioned, use two Potions of Magic Protection.  I can see no reason why this won't work... but I'm not an expert on the engine.
  • Similarly, send in Viconia (65% MR) with either the Cloak of Balduran (25% MR) or one Potion of Magic Protection (50%MR) to take the initial spell hits, and then she can Sanctuary or similar if you want to get her out of harm's way.

MR based strategies work, I've tested it. (With two potions.)

Oh, back on topic: I started another party led by Stonewall, M D Berserker, but it marched through the game fairly quickly and fell from a combination of overconfidence and not one but two "random" lightning strikes on the PC for a total of about 60-70 damage.

Turning off weather eliminates this. (I don't remember exactly what we concluded the last time this came up, but FWIW, I'm playing BGT too and it happened to me -- until I just turned off the weather. Also, it seems that not all lightning strikes cause any noticable damage. Perhaps the damage spread is set something like 1-40 damage.)

Update for Paragon and his power party.

A more cautious approach in that last session with few wounds taken.  Paragon has approached the gates of Sarevok's temple, but retreated for now.

Drizzt was the first victim - unusually Paragon was actually hitting him with a 19 as well as a 20.  To get reputation below 10 they then took the scroll of magic protection off Bentan before resting to get Divine Wrath for Paragon.

Back in the city Cythandria lasted just long enough to call for golem support.  They hit hard, but didn't last long enough to do any real damage.  Slythe fared no better, but as he was silenced he couldn't even activate Krystin so she survived somewhere in limbo.

At the palace just used haste and chant for offensive buffs while Avaunt used green amulet and read a chaotic commands scroll for Exos as well as casting remove fear.  The dopplegangers didn't last long - both dukes surviving.  The XP from the fight meant everyone except Exhorter is now at their capped level.

No-one even managed to move in the Undercity party before being cut down.  Avaunt briefly upgraded to full plate armour, before switching to Tamoko's.  Her blade barrier didn't protect her from magic missiles disrupting her spells and didn't last long.

Party levels are shown below:
Paragon, Fighter 7 / Illusionist 7, 64 HPs (avg 66)
Exos, Wizard Slayer 8, 80 HPs (avg 81)
Avaunt, Fighter 7 / Cleric 7, 69 HPs (avg 74)
Jack, Fighter 7 / Thief 8, 68 HPs (avg 67)
Exhorter, Bladesinger 9, 59 HPs (avg 52)
Arcana, Sorceror 9, 36 HPs (avg 42)

Other party members are fine.  From a scripting perspective, [PC] is any of the party members ( Player1 to Player6 ).  Player1 is the protagonist only.  Summons/Charmed monsters/etc. are excluded from [PC].

The script fires at [PC], so it will happily go after any of your party members, as my test follow-up with Dynaheir proved (she died to the Death Spell, so the follow up Greater Malison and Flesh to Stone were wasted).

Yeah, I know. I just can't make myself turn off weather for some reason or other. With my current game ( Kini III, M E Sorc ), whenever it starts raining he decides it's time to camp (assuming we're not in a battle). Which, come to think of it, is probably something a little more like what an actual adventurer might do (particularly a rather scholarly elf).

Update on Asati:

Party returned to Beregost and discoverd that the third chapter didn’t start (and I thought, that Nimbul didn't appear at the usual spot because of SCS). I decided to deal with the problem later and went east to recruit Shar-Teel. Kagain had some problems defeating her (had to drink 2 potions). Shar-Teel was level 4 with 32 HP. I dualed her to thief.

Then, party returned to the mines, trying to trigger chapter 3. While on their way they killed some wolves – a Grey and a winter one. I didn’t manage to accomplish anything in the mines, so I used console command to repair the bug. Meanwhile, I started suspecting, that I didn’t really install most of the SCS content. After correcting that, I returned to the game and approached Nimbul... only to run as soon, as I’ve seen his prebuffs – Minor Globe of Invulnerability? Stoneskin? I didn’t even have any kind of magic dispel.

I think I’ll have to turn something off – probably ‘better call for help’ as the game is slowing awfully. By the way, I suspect that the thing was invented to kill more things per fireball. So maybe I should keep it and get Asati some wand?

Lightning strikes inflict half of maximum HPs, so you can prevent death to these by keeping above half hits.  As it is possible for lightning to strike the same character twice in quick succession my routine response to a first strike is to take a healing potion.

                                                                       Cloakwood Forest (Chapter 4)

In the Cloakwood Lodge area we met a man, Aldeth, who’d come to the forest to hunt for sport. He & his friends ran afoul of the local Druids led by Seniyad. In order to save the man & assist the Druid, who Jaheira knew, we took on a side mission to find & save the Druids Maretha & Beador. By aiding Aldeth we made a friend who invited us to visit him @ the Merchant League should we ever be in Baldur’s gate. West of the Lodge we met an Elf named Coran who was hunting Wyverns & asked us to join him. We declined. We killed a bunch of Tasloi. One of them was carrying a cloak. We recalled a Hobbit named Gurke spinning a yarn about losing one when we were @ the Jovial Juggler. We tried to return it but he was enjoying the fame that came w/the story so now the cloak belongs to Dynaheir.

We had about all of the 'Web Traps', Spiders and Ettercaps we could stand in the area around the Spider Nest.

Deeper in the Cloakwood we came across a young boy, Tiber, who said he & his brother had been trying to find the sword ‘Spiders Bane’ but that his brother, Chelak, was now missing. We agreed to try to find Chelak. We had difficult battles w/Spiders & Ettercaps made tougher by ‘Web’ traps. Once we had to return to the FAI to have Khalid & Jaheira raised & to stock up on Potions of Healing, Antidotes & Elixirs of Health. We headed back & eventually found a cave. We went thru our normal procedure of ‘buffing’ since we had no idea what would be inside. We’re glad we did. Inside was a huge, fat arachnid thing w/8 Spiders & 2 Ettercaps. She immediately killed Dynaheir w/a wand but we returned the favor & slowly killed her pets.  Among her treasure was Chelak’s body which we returned to Tiber. We also found Spider’s Bane which Tiber gave us on our parting.

Posted Image
When we finally found the nest we killed more Spiders and Ettercaps and their Spider Queen!

Later we found out that the Shadow Druids are a tough fight. They use “Charm Person or Mammal’ &, maybe, ‘Rigid Thinking’ effectively. We found that just attacking immediately w/melee or ranged weapons as fast as possible was the best course. Waiting to spells to be cast gave them time to do the same.  We killed two groups of three in tough scraps in which either Minsc or I was a victim of one of those spells. It’s tough trying to kill an opponent while having to avoid an ally. We also came across some ‘woodsman’ in a cave who was trying to train baby Wyverns. He was obviously up to ‘no good’ & on questioning he turned hostile. We killed him & the Wyverns fairly easily. We found the Shadow Druids Arch Druid Amarande in a tree house. We were able to kill him but it was a very difficult fight against him & two other Shadow Druids &  a host of animals they summoned in. We were lucky to get out w/o needing one of Jaheira’s ‘Raise Dead’ scrolls like we used near the Spider Nest.

Posted Image
Battling the Wyverns was somewhat anti-climactic after the Shadow Druids.

Finally, we arrived @ the portion of the forest that the Wyverns seem to call home. There were numerous baby Wyverns swarming the wood. One of our toughest fights was w/a Hamadryad who seemed to have an endless supply of ‘Dire Charm’ & ‘Dimension Door’ Spells. Luckily, aside from those she appeared defenseless & we FINALLY ran her down & killed her w/o her ‘Dire Charm’ spells having duped us into killing one another. Later we found the main Wyvern lair & were able to kill two adult Wyverns & three baby Wyverns w/relative ease.

Posted Image
The Shadow Druids were tough and this particular fight with Andarthe was a doozy!

Key Event: We found Beador as we were leaving. He was apparently about to be executed by 5 Shadow Druids. Luckily these were not as tough as those we’d encountered before & we dealt w/them quickly. Beador urged us to return to the tree house which we did. We found 2 Druids who were about to execute Maretha. Easily the toughest battle yet, they immediately took out Dynaheir w/a ‘Call Lightning’ spell & then summoned wolves, panthers & dogs galore. They had plenty of Potions to aid their efforts. Eventually, Khalid was surrounded & succumbed also. Two dead & we were desperately battling to knock out the Druids & their spells so we could finish the animals. Finally, inexplicably & luckily, Andarthe surrendered & w/Jaheira’s benevolence considered we let him go & finished the fight. We returned to Seniyad to inform him of our success.

Treasure Acquired: (Legend: Alexander (Al), Imoen (Im), Khalid (Kh), etc.; General Party Use (GP); Spellbook (Sb); Sold (S); Armor: Splint Mail x2 (GP); Weapons: Arrows/Ice x6 (Kh), Root of the Problem (Ja), Spider Bane (Mi); Potions: Antidote (GP), Fortitude (Mi), Freedom (Al), Healing (GP), Invulnerability (Al); Scrolls: Misc: Arms/Weapons, Gems/Jewelry (S); >100gp

Current Disposition: Resting, recovering, recuperating & resupplying (R&R2) @ the FAI

Next Steps: Cloakwood Mines

Game Notes/Questions: Notice under ‘treasure acquired’ we keep Splint Mail when we find it. W/Hard Times mod armor found in treasures is almost always downgraded; often more than one AC. Plate Mail costs over 2600gp & Splint Mail over 400gp in a store. Additionally, it is not infrequent that non-magical armor, helmets & weapons suddenly become unusable as a result of the ‘iron crisis.’ Thus, when we find Splint Mail we keep it & store it in the dressers & chests in the inns we stay in so it’ll be there if our current set breaks because of the brittleness of the armor. Minsc joined w/Plate Mail but it fell apart. I did get a set of Full Plate from Taugosz & I’m hoping it holds together.

Promotions: Khalid advanced in each of his classes to 4th/3rd/4th Lvl Ftr/Mage/Thf. He improved to 40% in P/Locks, H/Shadows, M/Silently & 45% in F/Traps. He selected Sleep & Stinking Cloud to add to his memorized spells. Minsc advanced to 6th Lvl Ftr/Brsrkr & High Mastery w/his 2HS. Jaheira became the first 7th Lvl member of our party as a 7th Lvl Drd. She selected Cure Medium Wounds & Def Harmony as her newest Druid spells. I made 6th Lvl Paladin/Undead Hunter & improved my Flail skills.

Weavel, TN human male shapeshifter. Travelling with Imoen,Minsc, Viconia and Jaheira.

It is a long way through the maze so we consider our options. While we think Minsc throws a pile of extra items onto the floor, and borrows various items of equipment. He makes me use a scroll of protection from magic resistance before adding several potions.
Posted Image

He adds a potion of magic resistance and tells us to cover our ears hide in the bottom left corner.
Posted Image

Two arrows are required to dispel Sarevok then Minsc's buffs are dispelled by Angelo despite the scroll of magic resistance rant rant rant. All that is left is the magic resistance scroll again.

Minsc runs around, glugging a potion of fire resistance and an oil of speed before dispelling Angelo and Semaj. Then he adds a potion of regeneration.

A few arrows of biting later Minsc has recovered, glugging potions of mind focusing, heroism, invulnerability and power. Semaj takes another arrow of dispelling then Minsc targets whoever gets entangled.

Angelo is the first to die, causing Imoen and Jaheira to cheer level up. Semaj takes the next two arrows and keels over.
Posted Image

Fourteen arrows of biting are required for Tazok.
Posted Image

Sarevok takes nineteen more but is still only barely injured. A mere 40 acid arrows see him near death, and Minsc glugs a potion of storm giant strength. within moments Minsc has missed with Spiders Bane and Sarevok has hit back. Minsc retreats to glug another regeneration potion, then switches to arrows of piercing. He has to glug a third oil of speed, having fought for five rounds.

We step out of the corner, and Minsc returns to us. Imoen aims her arrows as I cast DUHM. Jaheira casts doom then insect summons. Viconia fails to command Sarevok or hold him so I'm in with my claws. Sarevok hits me twice and I have to run until Jaheira gets her act together.
Posted Image

We collect our junk from the floor and prepare to depart.

Edit, in BGT I think I'm always going to stick the party in the bottom left corner and fight this way. Much safer than trying to keep five or six people alive.
