Winski and Voletta Stiletto are informed that Sarevok is dead. Then we head to Ulgoths Beard and a quest for Shandalar.
Minsc charms a winter wolf to greet Andris while Viconia sends in skeletons one by one. Then a wolf and a nymph, with Minsc charming another winter wolf. Minsc and Imoen finish off Andris, then a charmed polar bear helps against Garan.
A backstab and follow up see Imoen kill Cuchol despite everybody else trying their hardest. Imoen triggers a magic missile trap, and then I convince Tellan to help us. Dezkiel is doom commanded and Shandalar has his cloak again.

Lightning strikes inflict half of maximum HPs, so you can prevent death to these by keeping above half hits. As it is possible for lightning to strike the same character twice in quick succession my routine response to a first strike is to take a healing potion.
RIP Kini III, M E Sorc
He worked down solo the coast to Nashkel, clearing out maps between the FAI and Nashkel. The Drizzt map went cleanly, although Jembi (IIRC) managed to Horror him after he had drawn away and blinded the hobgoblin archer and fighter. Still, no real harm done there.
The problem was (after reaching L4) when he decided to work on the map S of Nashkel. The idea was to help Rufie/Albert and maybe take on Zax and Val, but instead stumbled into the troublesome threesome from Amn. He managed to Blind the dual-wielding scimitar leader, but one of the archers just couldn't help but hit regularly, even with Shield running and the Girdle of Piercing aiding in his defense.
Bah. Once again, "they killed Kini!"
I remembered again that I don't particularly care for solo work, so the next time will be another attempt at a party. Everything TBD.
Oh, and congrats, Gate70.

Hard luck After5CST. Those archers are vicious (as are Billy & Dribben) so need a bit of care. I often draw Sendai away out of hearing range and then kill her without letting her talk, e.g. by run & shoot. That means the others are not hostile so can be attacked more easily.After5CST wrote...

Weavel, TN human male shapeshifter. Travelling with Imoen,Minsc, Viconia and Jaheira.
900gp, ale and sea charts are all that is required for a trip on a ship and then we are hunting wolfweres. Palin is first, then Meym, Kryla and Jondal.
Minsc leads into each level of Balduran's ship with aid and bless active, and I follow with DUHM. We rest after each level and after the second level I learn to cast iron skins.
The third level is a bit tougher, the fourth sees us kill Daese and the pack so just Karoug alone. Minsc is glugging potions while Imoen loots the room. Our weapons are good against Karoug.

I land a critical as does Imoen, Minsc gets payback with a bigger critical. Three in a row are enough to beat his regeneration.

Our weapons are still effective towards the end.

Minsc critically chunks Baresh and switches to a non-proficient sword of Balduran when Spiders Bane finally proves to be ineffective against Selaad. Jaheira has a silver dagger but Viconia seems unable to doom him.
I shapeshift and manage to doom him; Viconia immediately commands him as Minsc kills him with the next hit.

They travelled up to Ulgoth's Beard and agreed to explore some ice caves for Shandalar. There were no problems in those. The first group of mages got the immolation treatment, which was rather more successful than in the Iron Throne - only Andris survived and he didn't last long. Jack cleared the traps invisibly and the rest of the occupants fell to concentrated missile fire, with a few skeletons providing unneeded help at the end.
Rather annoyed at the way he was almost stranded Paragon ordered an assault on Shandalar. This is something I have very rarely done (and not for a long time) and didn't realise how tough he was. His AC was at least -16, so he was difficult to hit; his globe of invulnerability protected him from spells and his improved alacrity meant he was casting much more than I expected.
With half the party confused I thought casualties were almost inevitable, but Jack and Paragon plugged away with arrows of dispelling (6 shots per round) and one of those eventually hit. Enough magic missiles now got through his magic resistance to take him down fairly quickly, but even so Exos only just survived. There were a couple of innocents killed by the confused characters so some large donations were made at a temple to repair reputation.
The party have just acquired some sea charts and will be going on a voyage next. Three of them are already at their XP cap and the rest will no doubt reach that in the next session.

After being ambushed, and the death of Gorion, I was all but killed by two attacking dire wolves. With one bite I was brought to the very brink of death and therefore fled for my life to the Friendly Arms Inn where I recuperated.
After agreeing to help Sonner the priestess proved to be too powerful for me. “Hold” made me helpless and that was that.
Tried again with a similar character was ambushed by improved spiders straight after Gorion’s death. Webbed and no escape possible.
Tried again with another similar character. Ambushed by dread wolves and then ghasts, At least I was able to run away! Dealt with Sonner and so levelled up. Headed south and was once more ambushed by improved spiders. Tried to cast freedom of action, but was webbed before I was able to cast it.
I’m beginning to think that my current set-up is impossible for a no-re-load game. At this stage of the game I haven’t even got a freedom of action potion.
Maybe rather than following all the advice that Gorion gave me, I should head for High Hedge first!
I doubt if I’ll ever get a better roll to start with no matter how long I spend doing it.

The group took a sea voyage to find Balduran's last resting place. Didn't bother with all the sub-quests, but went straight to the ship. Used invisibility 10' to set up good positions on each level and took virtually no damage on the way up. Used a small number of buffs for Karoug, but even they probably were not necessary. Only Avaunt took any damage. Coming back to Ulgoth's Beard there was one more were combat to do. Baresh tried to skew things their way by cloning himself, but it only delayed the end by a few seconds.
Next up was the Grey Clan. The first hard battle there was with Gracchus and his undead. Initially I ignored damage to try and finish him off quickly. He was about to fall, but saved himself with a chain contingency and another round of undead summons. Everyone quickly ran away, losing a few of the undead in the chase, killing some more and having a number focus on the mold golem (which is immune to damage) - where they were easy targets. Coming back invisibly Gracchus was exposed on his own and when his first spell failed he was quickly finished off.
Upstairs Jack missed with a backstab, but redeemed himself by dispelling Linda's invisibility - opening her up to damage. At the main hideout in Beregost Jack missed with another backstab! That proved costly to him as that sorceress went on to kill him with a power word kill before being taken down.
With the Grey Clan laid to rest the party intended to try and solve the Secret of Bone Hill. However, the contact for that had disappeared from Beregost temple, so this is presumably linked to the main BG quest line. Oh well, save that one for another run. That means that only Durlag's Tower is still to do.

Imoen reminds me about the treasures of Black Alaric, and suggests we search for them. Viconia uses skeletons to distract Sil and five other sirines, then we deal with a trio of flesh golems to retrieve the loot. Thalantyr reads a tome of bodily health to Minsc.
Durlags Tower.
Viconia uses sanctuary to summon skeletons. Minsc follows and finishes off a basilisk. Imoen is unable to handle all the traps upstairs so we have to avoid one doorway. Minsc makes Daital angry so we have to (re-)kill him.
Kirinhale is a pain.
First Minsc is charmed so we scatter. He kills our skeletons as Kirinhale drains Jaheira. Imoen and I cannot get to her while Viconia keeps missing. Eventually Viconia is charmed as am I, then Kirinhale moves to Imoen. She charms Jaheira, then Imoen misses a backstab and I hit Imoen then Viconia.
Viconia and Imoen both retreat, leaving Minsc to fend off Kirinhale, Jaheira and myself. Jaheira recovers, only for me to kill her and I make Minsc glug four blue potions. Imoen misses another backstab and I chase her into a ghast. She escapes, and I recover to kill the ghast. Minsc has been charmed again, but Imoen succeeds on her next backstab.

The only good thing to come of this is for Imoen to improve her thieving skills. After raising Jaheira we sell, store and stock up.
Durlags Tower, the four warders.
Three greater doppelgangers force Minsc to glug two more blue potions. Imoen is unable to remove a cluster of traps, or open a bedside cabinet. Three nymphs help against the four warders, making the battle relatively easy. Our backpacks are overflowing so we store a few items and send Minsc to barter with Erdane.
Durlags Doors.
All goes well until we find an abandoned helmet. We kill two greater doppelgangers but a third one has locked onto me. I try to escape but it is hasted; I take a few more hits and gulp a blue potion. Arrows and bullets are flying but Minsc blocks me once or twice should have switched him to arrows in hindsight. I take one hit too many and raise my hand.
fistful of potions of invisibility too, oh well

Slightly different start here. From Candlekeep I spoke to Marl and Firebead, helped Mirianne, grabbed the boots of stealth and bracers of archery. Rings +1 and fire protection are next.
Nashkel mine.
I kill a few kobolds and sneak past several more. I drag Mulahey to the far side of a puddle and hit him with an arrow when he turns hostile and retreats. I manage to draw his minions out in small groups then shoot him from the shadows, retreating each time to hide again. I have potions of clarity and freedom ready, but no need to use either.
One insolent pig and his charmed wild dog.
The dog doesn't last more than a moment against Lamahla and her amazons so I retreat after hitting her once, and all four give chase. I sneak back past them and hit Telka from the shadows. Each time I retreat and hide, reducing her chance to counter.
Zeela is next, but Maneira sticks close to her. Zeela is drawn off and is easier to shoot than Telka was. I return for Maneira but Lamahla is closer. Eventually she manages to cast entangle but I've run a long way, hidden and save against it. I hit her again, almost killing her. My next shot misses and she casts command. I've retreated and hidden, and again save. One more arrow eliminates her.
Maneira is last, forcing me to abandon arrows and a few items to pick up her equipment.
A dangerous game.
I hit a mirror image, then hide around a corner before Nimbul can cast another spell. By the time I lap the building four guards are shooting at him but he is uninjured. I aim my bow just as a guard one-shots him. Oh well.
Tranzig Inn trouble.
I step back and interrupt his casting with an arrow. My second and third arrows hit but he manages to Melf me. A fourth arrow drops him.

Durlag Tower claims another victim as Paragon gets mated on the chess board. I think this must have been upgraded since I last remember it as the enemy all seemed to be hasted as well as having other spells / abilities. A round of fireballs to start with killed all the pawns, but by the time they went off Paragon was already being assaulted by 2 attackers.

One of the enemies died quickly and I thought Paragon was probably going to get away with it as concentrated fire poured in on the other one, but then the dreaded screen appeared.

Looking at it another attacker has appeared out of nowhere so I guess Paragon was finished off with a backstab.
I hadn't bothered with any buffs prior to translating there and that proved costly.

I find the standard chessboard annoying enough, even the SCS read-me (below) indicates it is a crazed encounter.
The chessboard battle has been significantly upgraded and is now quite difficult. The chess constructs have gained a variety of immunities (electricity, normal weapons, mind-affecting magic) to represent their status as constructs rather than humans; the pawns have gained more hit points. The King is now a 9th/7th level fighter/mage and the Queen is an 11th level mage.
(For what it's worth, my own solution to the fight was to refuse to play the chessboard game: make everyone immune to lightning and just go where you want. You should have enough potions of absorption by this stage.)
anyway...

Bandits.
A few stragglers are picked off, then Taugoz Khosann gets shot down. After selling some loot I return to deal with Ardenor Crush and then have a think about what might be waiting for me inside the large tent.
I glug my potion of clarity and chat to Raemon. As they attack I aim at Venkt but miss. I run around the tent but take a poison arrow and a Melf's acid arrow, time to leave. The potion prevents horror from stopping me.
They follow but I have hidden and start on Raemon. As soon as he is dead I heal twice then dispose of Hakt then Britik. I mis-time an attack on Venkt, allowing him to Melf me again before he dies.
Ender Sai tells me about a mine in Cloakwood, and I take a minor electric shock when looting a nearby chest.

Cloakwood.
I grab a spare cloak then agree to help Aldeth Sashenstar. After being chased all over the place by spiders, wolves and tasloi I finally return to advise the druids are dead. Aldeth refuses to speak to me so the code of the wood insists I draw my bow again.
Spiders, ettercaps and traps; I sneak past them all eluding one trap, saving a second and caught twice by the third but out of sight of enemies. Two more large expanses of the forest are briskly traversed without stopping to tangle with anything.
A pair of guards are removed from a bridge, then I require two heals and a blue potion to defeat Drasus hmm should have got a decent quarterstaff. Time to step into his boots.
Kysus, Rezdan and Genthore are shot from the shadows. Another shopping trip sees me top up on arrows and retrieve a tome of bodily health.
Cloakwood Mine.
I can't avoid the lightning trap, and have to kill the final guard before Davaeorn. Two battle horrors appear as a pair of traps injure me, so I try resting several times, eventually succeeding. Then I start sniping mirror images. Once they are down Davaeorn is soon gurgling his last.
I almost forget to free Yeslick and Rill, killing a pair of ghasts to get to them.

After their escape from Nimbul, party went to explore southeastern locations, starting wth the xvart location. Soon they had to run away to prevent being swarmed. Asati decided to take an advantage of ‘better calls for mass slaughter’ end led her party to procure herself a wand of fire. Viconia used Sanctuary to recover such wand (along with some other items) from the ankheg lair. On her way, she noticed that she was being followed by a pack of hobgoblins (I wonder which part of ‘ignore caster’s existence’ they failed to comprehend). Ankhegs, however, were better versed in cleric spells and didn’t cause any trouble.
Before returning south Asati decided to hunt Bassilus down. This time i picked the right dialogue option – undead ceased to be a problem and the whole party could attack the priest. Kagain was confused, then held, but Bassilus only managed to hit him once before dying. I didn’t notice any improvement. Maybe it’s because I visited that location before installing the component? Montaron got the short sword +2 from Zargal and Shadow Armor for the money earned by killing a priest.
Back in the xvart village, Montaron was charged with positioning the villagers appropriately. But herding xvarts wasn’t as easy as I suspected, and finally Asati’s fireball killed only 29 of them, which was about a half. Waste of a valuable charge, to be sure, but it still was pleasant to see them burn.

At the gnoll stronghold Kagain acquired Gauntlets of Dexterity, eliminating his major weakness. Still, his strenght is much too low and Shar-Teel has to carry throwing axes for him. Truly, ‘men are pathetic’. In the waterfall location, Montaron was killed by a dire wolf (I thought they aren’t capable of dealing 10 damage in a single hit). At least the resurrection was cheap.
In the neighbouring location Vax and Zal didn’t stand a chance as Phillips unleashed uspeakable horrors on them. Sendai and her archers also went down easily as Sendai were held and archers horrified (twice, as once wasn’t enough). Howard has a strong competition in Xzar now – he has 3 Horrors per day. But it’s quality that matters. Xzar was shot by some skeleton, right before Montaron stabbed him (skeleton, that is). 400 for resurrection was not that bad. It was bad, that the shopkeeper refused to pay for wolf pelts, though.

Soon, Xzar shared Montaron’s fate. In the meanwhile, Molkar was chasing Asati through the carnival, with Shar-Teel shooting him in the back. Viconia was running from the dwarf, as the latter lost his interest in killing someone of his own size. Mage cast blindness on sleeping Xzar and appeared to have run out of spells, so Howard attacked him. Then, there was a short break, as everyone stopped fighting to listen to the declamation of Nosferatu. Soon after, Montaron have woken and assissted Howard in finishing the mage, after which both turned to the held cleric. Viconia managed to doom, and then hold her dwarven pursuer. Asati and Shar-Tell were still playing hide and seek with Molkar. When Kagain started moving again, he engaged Molkar, and the fight was over soon. Asati’s party was not only victorious, but almost unscathed. This was mostly due to the fact, that AI seems to ignore incapacitated characters now. Normally, I would have lost 3 characters, if not a whole fight. Anyway, the question about the carnival’s favourite act should be rather easy now. I’ll take the prebuffed assassins’ attack any day.
When party returned to Beregost, they had enough money to buy Crossbow of Speed for Shar-Teel. There had been some serious complaints about the high (15) reputation, blaming Asati’s species, place of birth and masculinity (!), among other things. She really needed to kill some ‘innocent’ and decided for the Nashkel’s priest of Helm. I was rather curious about his spell arsenal, but didn’t learn anything as Viconia silenced him before the attack, so he couldn’t even beg for mercy. Brage also provided some easy experience.
While in Nashkel party also killed Nimbul – after Howard horrified him from a save distance (so that his protections couldn’t appear again).
Firewine Ruins were the next stop (to get the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise). On the way Asati had a nice wild surge, first in a long time – a bloodstone amulet appeared in her pocket. Other, much more amusing surge happened during the fight with Meilum, making him the Sword Coast’s best swordwomen, if anything.

Party status:
Asati – wild mage 4, 25 HP (favourite spell: Magic Missle)
Kagain – fighter 4, 47 HP
Montaron – fighter 3/thief 4, 21 HP
Shar-Teel – fighter 4/thief 4, 32 HP
Viconia – cleric 4, 19 HP
Xzar – necromancer 4, 15 HP
