I just tried playing a solo monk. First run was really short – got killed by the first enemy encountered – a lone gibberling. Now, that's what I call playing fast.

I started again, this time taking things a little more seriously (no fistfight until some level-ups). I chose proficiency with darts and slings, using both (starting round with a sling, then throwing two darts). I killed Algernon, but mostly for increased charisma (I used charm once per day max). I did some hunting south of Beregost, then killed spiders in Beregost and got a reward in FAI, killing an ogre on the way and sneaking past Tarnesh. Then I killed some half-ogres (only now I realised that I forgot about the reward), helped archeologist and brought Brage no Nashkel. Made a trip to Gnoll Stronghold to raise charisma to 18. In one of my latest games Jared didn’t reward my party with Boots of North, so I decided to take a just revenge:

Image IPB

Back in Beregost I bought a Dagger of Venom (meanwhile took a profociency point in daggers). Got gauntlets from Meilum, did some more hunting, bought Shield Amulet, Necklace of Missles, Greenstone Amulet and Cloak of Displacement. After reaching level 6 I decided to enter the mines, safely sneaking all the way down. For some reason Shield didn’t protect me from Magic Missles released by a trap. Mulahey didn’t save against a Stunning Blow and died before talking or turning hostile. Probably that’s why chapter 3 did not begin. Had to use console to rectify this again.

Image IPB

When hunting winter wolves I was attacked by female assassins, but they had no chance to catch a monk. I went to Beregost to buy some more ammo mand decided to take on Tranzig. Tranzig saved against Stunning Blows, cast Slow, then Blindness. I decided to use it against him and tried hiding, but he finished the game with Charm Person (I didn't think that Greenstone Amulet will be useful in this fight).

Image IPB

The statement about my death was obviously a lie – didn’t take a single hit, and wasn’t even like to take any, but hey, I’ve got more important things to do anyway (playing a wild mage in Shadows of Amn mostly). I only wonder why didn’t he cast any Sleep this time? How could he know I was above level 4? Consulted a walkthrough? Should do this more thoroughly, if that’s the case – that Slow was useless against monk.

Varel, LG human male cavalier. A bit of a saga.

Ulgoth's Beard. I purchase a greenstone amulet and a cloak of displacement. Then I pick up a magical ring and return Samuel to safety before dealing with an assassin called Tarnesh.

Bandit Camp.
Many enemies get chunked, including Ardenor Crush. I am forced to sell the spoils of war after killing Taugosz Khosann and return to investigate the largest tent. I'm well equipped so only cast PfE before entering.

Raemon turns hostile so I drop Venkt before he can cast, then chunk Raemon. Three hits chunk Britik and two more do the same to Hakt. Ender Sai can only stare as I stand there unscathed. "All in a days work" I say, taking two short sharp shocks from a trapped chest.

I store a few items and retrieve some others before heading to Cloakwood. I soon have a magical cloak stripped from a tasloi, and a magical ring wrested from Seniyad. I'm waylaid by four ettercaps, they obviously don't realise a cavalier is about the worst enemy they can stumble across and are soon dead.

The next area of Cloakwood has traps, spiders and ettercaps. I tread as carefully as possible, killing whatever does not flee (ie everything). PfE helps me clear Centeol and her pets, allowing me to get an upgraded sword.

After yet another shop I decide to clear the area of spiders and ettercaps. Two level-ups received on this map alone, now level 7 with 75k xp. My next shopping trip is interrupted by a wyvern so I kill that too.

Two more ambush me on my way back. Two against one, yet I still prevail. PfE and three hits results in a chunked hamadryad, then a pair of spiders and finally a family of wyverns.
Image IPB

I kill a pair of guards and prepare for battle.

Buffs and plan for Cloakwood mine: Potions of hill giant strength, absorbtion, heroism and an oil of speed. PfE and girdle of bluntness for the mercenaries, switching to boots of speed and girdle of piercing for the remainder.

Drasus is his usual mouthy self, so I flit past him and kill Rezdan before he can buff. I nick Drasus then Kysus appears again and I kill him, but not before he confuses me curses.

I start to run, then turn on Drasus and chunk him. Genthore is badly wounded by the time I recover, and dies soon afterwards. I am uninjured so move on to the mine.

A few guards are down, then I edge around one trap and try to draw a lightning trap into a well guarded room. I am so quick that the trap fails to trigger, but Hareishan fires a bolt before I kill her. I smash the guards, taking minor injuries 64/82hp before releasing Rill and Yeslick.

I take a direct route through the next level, and then to the base of the mine where the last guard is terminated. 57/82hp. The oil of speed has worn off but I decide not to use the remaining one unless I need to. I glug a potion of regeneration and brave a series of traps.

I drop a battle horror 47/82hp then a second 49/82hp. I gather my thoughts as the potion heals me slightly, then charge Davaeorn. He casts a lightning bolt, a fireball and a dire charm. He renews his mirror images but his luck is out (my aim is true).
Image IPB

I have a lot of items to sell in Baldur's Gate. Then I kill Sil and five other sirines, glug a frost giant strength and kill three flesh golems. Next, Gnarl, Hairtooth and some xvarts. Now I have three tomes to read (con, dex, cha).

An ogre mage in the sewers confuses me, but he and his pets die as a result. I must still be confused, as I turn down quests for Scar despite having already done one. So instead I agree to help Duke Eltan by investigating the Iron Throne HQ.

First though, Ramazith. level 8, 94hp. Another tome, intelligence. Oh, and the helm of Balduran.

Iron Throne HQ.
More potions. Fire resistance and invulnerability, followed by PfE and a bust-up. We'll start with Diyab, then Aasim. I've taken a Melf so Alai is next, then another Melf and Naaman. Just the fighters left now. First the doppelganger, then Zhalimar Cloudewulfe then finally Gardush. 44/99hp left.

Duke Eltan sends me back to Candlekeep, where I am quickly framed for the murder of Rieltar. Tethtoril frees me and I glug more potions: Mind focusing, Cloud giant strength, absorbtion, oil of speed and a regeneration. I'm soon running out of inventory so glug a spare potion of heroism too.

I've got two tomes, a scroll and a ring so depart. A few doppelgangers are easy and Prat is dead before Sakul shows himself again. With the two casters dead Tam and Bor are given one-way tickets to the afterlife.

I play in the web traps with a pair of phase spiders before a potion of mirrored eyes foils two greater basilisks. From there I rest, get two more tomes (str, wis) identified and consider my options.

Int is too low for a potion of protection from magic. So questions specific to BGT;
1) Do potions of mind focusing stack in terms of int.
2) Which magic protection potions (x2) do I need to stop Semaj as none of them read to me as being effective. One stops level 5 spells and below, another can be dispelled?

Interesting PC though. Never played a monk in either p&p D&D or BG.
CKT

A monk was my main character playing a couple of p&p campaigns 30+ years ago, so I've always had a soft spot for them. I think it was actually a monk that I got furthest with in BG2 so perhaps I should give Solis another go and make sure next time.

Traps tend to do physical damage rather than magical, which will be why shield didn't help - even when the icon shows magic missiles they are normally (though not always) coded as physical.

I don't think Mulahey has to talk to trigger the chapter change - just die. However, there's another trigger required as well, which is to take one of the letters in his treasure chest into your inventory. Did you do that?

The mind focusing potions do stack.

You could use scroll of magic protection.  If you want to use potions then you could take 2 magic protection potions to get 100% MR.  I don't use those, so am not sure if they can be dispelled.  If you're concerned about that wait a few seconds after your last action to move forward in order to clear your aura and have a potion of magic shielding handy to take immediately if you get hit with a successful remove magic.

Edit: reading it again you must be referring to a scroll rather than potion originally since the latter is not affected by intelligence.

Condolences, Black.

@Gate, dang, man, that's a lot of play, and very exciting reading. You got most of the critical main storyline done in a single session.

Grond0, in my install of EasyTutu, potions of genius and mind focusing won't stack with themselves, but will with each other. e.g., 2 potions of genius just wastes the 2nd one in my install. Not sure how it works in BGT though...

@Grond0; I usually go scroll, int is too low so was thinking of upping it via potion or using potion instead of scroll. 1 genius potion did enough.

@BelgarathMTH; Solo is a lot quicker. I think that took about 10 hours gameplay. I do like a party game doing all of TotSC but in no-reloads it just gets too frustrating when a mistake is made or stupidity takes over.

Varel, LG human male cavalier.

I decide to purchase potions of genius. Then I use DUHM and PfE to end Slythe and take his invitations. No need to risk Cythandria, although I have a potion of clarity which may make the encounter trivial. A brief word with Tamoko is followed by a trip to the coronation.

Buffs: Mind focusing, cloud giant strength, absorbtion, heroism, DUHM, oil of speed. Stand and fight, no running and no use of doors and floors.
Image IPB

Both dukes survive and once Sarevok vanishes I am sent after him. After clearing the thieves maze I glug a potion of regeneration then set about Rahvin and his cronies.

Shaldrissa is first, then Wudei. Rahvin and Carston are next, but I have to step back from Gorf and glug a healing potion. Haseo and two war dogs are easy, then I talk Tamoko out of a fight her armour would have been nice though.

The scroll of magic protection will de-buff me so I decide to rest outside the temple. A potion of genius allows me to use the scroll. I taunt Sarevok by saying I will be the new god of murder and he attacks. Angelo casts remove magic while Semaj uses a contingency, tattoo of power and a domination spell. I'm running around them, as a web captures Sarevok. I retreat to buff.

Angelo and Sarevok chase me, then Angelo switches to arrows. Once I'm buffed I start on Angelo. My first swing misses but my second connects with a huge clang.
Image IPB

I'm using hit and run to keep a distance from Sarevok, and also in case Tazok turns up. Angelo is damaging me slightly so I am glad my next strike is decisive.
Image IPB

I'm feeling confident now as I can outpace the hasted Sarevok. I cheekily grab the gold that Angelo dropped and get clouted, so retreat and glug a potion of regeneration. It takes a while to clear mirror images, and Sarevok is often on me before I can attack Semaj so I take a few hits. Anyway;
Image IPB

Tazok next.
Image IPB
Image IPB
Image IPB

& Sarevok. I glug a potion of power and trade two blows for one note hitting each other with rolls of 5 and 6.
Image IPB

I don't fancy my chances so do a couple of laps. I cast PfE, hit for 29 and step back before he can retaliate. I hit for 20, he replies with 25. Time for the PratAxe. Three hits of 5 each are safely delivered, then 6 and 7. Another three 5's, 4, 6, 5. He's badly injured so I add a 7 and glug another regeneration potion.

Back to the sword and a hit for 20. Step back and round the mosaic of Bhaal on the floor. 26, 29. He's near death, I am uninjured. 21. Our next encounter is painful for us both, but while I survive he does not.
Image IPB

Cavalier 8, 292k xp. Will revert to 161k in Amn. 350 kills, Angelo is the usual suspect for most powerful vanquished.

EDIT: Must remember to get the pantaloons before returning to Belt.

Thanks. I had to hit & run, didn't you just slug it out with Sarevok?

Even buffed I find going in with a 2HS vs Sarevok is painful, can't remember how much help a shield is against him.

I did indeed just slug it out with Sarevok. His Thac0 is so good, he's one of the few enemies a shield isn't much help with. If you get the extra half attack for being specialized, I think using a two-hander so that your hits are bigger and also so are your criticals is more effective against him. Via potions, I usually can get my fighters strength to 25 (I usually use that strength 24 potion in Sorcerous sundries then DUHM since most of my characters are good), and with other potions, like heroism or potions of power, you can get comparable Thac0 to Sarevok himself, assuming your characer's STR isn't gimped. I typically also use potions of healing in between rounds, which I don't see Sarevok do or he'd be much more dangerous.

Oh, one more thing...I dispelled his haste via dispelling arrows...I'm not sure what would happen if I allowed him to trade blows while he was hasted, that could be touch and go...

Yes, I noted that before.  It seems a bit odd that default BG behaviour was changed by EasyTutu.  By the way I saw a post by Macready that a new version of EasyTutu is available.

@Gate70 congratulations.  Best of luck in Amn.

Where he dies is also important. In a game I played, due to panic, he fled outside his cave. I picked up the letters and followed him outside where I killed him. The trigger did not operate until I went back inside his cave. Rather weird that, but worth knowing.

I decided to give Solis the monk another go.  She's not hanging around - so far:
- killed Shoal
- done tasks along route from Friendly Arm to Nashkel
- relieved Meilum of his bracers
- used wand of sleep extensively in the Nashkel mine (unusually for me) to speed up dealing with the kobolds there.  Mulahey was already pretty helpless before being stunned.
- Tranzig was another stunning victim.
- Molkar and his goons ambushed Solis after she had dealt with Tranzig.  With lots of places to hide she was happy to accommodate them.  It took a while to deal with them safely as 2 copies of Morvin spawned and an extra copy of Halacan as well.
- at the bandit tent Solis charmed Raemon on entry.  He killed Venkt before dying and Solis then finished the rest of them with the help of a couple of necklace of missiles charges.  On exit from the tent the amazons tried to ambush Solis; she didn't fancy taking them on along with all of the bandits, so took an invisibility potion and went on her way.

I did. I even leafed through both of them. But I've got another idea -- maybe it's not talking to to the mine's foreman? In TuTu it's not neccessary, as neutral characters can't block the way.

Solis has followed a similar routine to her predecessor and just arrived in Baldur's Gate.  No particular alarms in her journeys so far, so I'll just comment on a couple of encounters.

Against the sirenes I was watching carefully this time to make sure that she wasn't intelligence drained to death.  As it happened she was touched several times, but always saved against the effect.
Image IPB

At the Cloakwood mine Solis used stealth charms to collect her own party.
Image IPB
I tried to kill the first mage quickly, but he managed to get a confusion off affecting everyone so Solis had to start work again.  Most of the effort was using stealth fists, but she did recruit Kysus again to help.  His remove magic allowed him to win a mage duel against Rezdan.
Image IPB
He got a nice double lightning strike against Genthore, but was just too slow in moving and got caught himself.
Image IPB
After recruiting Kysus again Solis sneaked up on Genthore and finished him off with a Bhaal cause affliction power (normally I don't take that one at all as it doesn't cause much damage and has a saving throw as well, but it can occasionally be useful).

Solis has completed her journeys in BG1 and headed for Amn.

She carried on with her no-risks approach.  Encounters included:
- just for a change used a dart of stunning on Ramazith (his stoneskins protected against poisonous darts, but not stunning effect).
- just ran through Candlekeep after looting the tombs.
- got the last tome as part of a reputation management strategy.
- a stealth attack and firebreath potion was enough to convince Cythandria to give up.
- Larze dealt with Slythe while Solis looked on benignly.
- went invisible at the palace so that the greater dopplegangers only acted defensively.  This took the sting out of them, although there was a bit of work at the end after Liia dispelled invisibility.
- the final fight with Sarevok took quite a while as Sarevok and Angelo were slightly faster than Solis and there were quite a few things around making it difficult to hide behind pillars (Solis' stealth ability was also not good for this stage of the game).  Things got a bit easier to manage hiding after her initial scroll of magic protection ran out causing Semaj and Angelo to attack and become visible.  Sarevok was already nearly done by the time he got stuck in a web and Solis nipped in for the final 3 blows.
- before reported back to the palace Solis went to purchase Claw of Kazgoroth, just in case she decides to make use of this in BG2.

No worries, aTweaks' Sirines don't actually drain your intelligence. Their touch causes Feeblemind which sets your INT to 2.

BTW, I think you might find Shoal a bit more challenging as of the next version. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

Thanks for the warning about Shoal. I'm surprised about the touch of tranquility though. If that causes Feeblemind should it not prevent a character from taking any further actions (like the mage spell)? I didn't notice any effects (though presumably would have been unable to read scrolls).

It does actually cause feeblemindness, as per the spell.

Did you by any chance use a potion/item which prevents this effect? For example, Potions of Clarity and the Greenstone Amulet both protect from feeblemindness.

Looks good, might have to add this to my install. How does Shoal react to a character who refuses to talk to her but kites round the map while using missiles (just want to understand exactly how a typical Grond0 session will be affected...)

edit, & congratulations once more Grond0.

She will go hostile if attacked and fight back using all of her PnP abilities.

If a PC enters her line of sight, she will initiate dialogue. However, you will be able to refuse her deadly kiss, even as a solo character.

Right - I can't remember for sure, but suspect I must have been protected by the greenstone amulet then.  I assumed that the intelligence drain would be linked to the feeblemind effect, but if there are 2 separate effects that would explain it.

Thanks for the clarification.

Is the script for the kiss of death changed in this new mod? Because in the original, if you "refuse her kiss" in the dialogue screen, she will say "I'm afraid I must insist" and do it anyway.
