Here is where another mod comes in handy. It is called level 1 NPCs. The parts that I have installed are as follows. (Plus the parts referring to aditional NPCs)
~LEVEL1NPCS.TP2~ #0 #0 // Nythrun's Level 1 NPCs: List party-joinable NPCs (required to install any NPC components): v1.7
~LEVEL1NPCS.TP2~ #0 #4 // Joinable NPCs more closely match the player character's experience -> On initial joining and rejoining: v1.7
This mod enables YOU to choose the proficiencies of characters when they join. Since rangers have ** in dual wielding, it makes sense to make use of that and give them long swords/flails etc. (There is a useful flail north of the FAI)
The way I play the game is to solo at first, getting the easy experience in Beregost, - talking to Marl, delivering a book etc. Then when you have that experience get a small party to join you. If you get a big party, it is easier for a while, but because the experience is divided amongst the party, it becomes more difficult. Have a party of not more than four, IMO two or three is easiest. When you are approaching the level cap it then makes sense to have others join you.
Don't be afraid to run away. When attacked by enemies who have no ranged weapons, keep your distance and use yours. That makes even the ogre north of Beregost fairly easy. (So long as you ensure that you don't run into another group of enemies).
He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.
As proved by Dunkirk!
You will learn that particularly at lower levels, (and even at higher levels) tactics are important.
At the start sleep is a VERY useful spell against gibberlings, kobolds, and suchlike. (Large parties of enemies tend to be weaker.
Blindness is useful against individuals. Once they are blind, use ranged weapons. Warning. Sometimes the enemies save against blindness so you have to run, find somewhere to sleep and come back when you have memorised the spells again. A good reason to memorise more than one blindness spell!! You don't have to sleep so much.
There is a lot more that I could say, but that should be enough to get you started, and you can then learn from experience.

In Icewind Dale due to our magical skills this also was not too difficult, but then we met Artemis and his cohorts. The poisonous sword was the death of both Bruenor and Sneaky Mage. As soon as they took a potion, they were poisoned again.
However, once the demon had been killed, the rest fell quickly. The question is; should we call it a day, as we now have no mage and no thief?
As it happens, we didn’t have the choice! We were teleported off to a different area, which to my surprise worked out extremely well.
The wailing death was no problem. Silence was enough to deal with her, but somehow she managed to cast the spell kill which hurt Catti-Brie badly but not dangerously.
The skeletons hurt us, but again not badly. We are up to our eyes in healing potions and are using them as I am well aware that this is not a good place to sleep!!
I had some negative plane protection spells memorised which enabled us to defeat some shadows and vampires. At that point, my level went up and I was able to resurrect Bruenor and Sneaky. I thought that the benefits outweighed the risks of sleeping and I was right! A vampire did awake us, but was killed without doing any harm. Bruenor and Sneaky were healed so we now have a full party again.
We found a belt which has increased the strength of Drizzt to 21, so he is now a lot more formidable. I have now realised that if he had used a potion of strength where Sneaky and Bruenor died, then the two of them might not have died. I am too stingy with potions.
Drizzt using stealth located some more vampires so we will protect ourselves and attack. All my level 3 spells are now negative plane protection!!
In the battle against the vampires, Bruenor was killed and Catti-Brie was charmed. We killed the vampires and left Catti-Brie to recover.
We then plundered a chest and found a helm of charm protection. Typical!! If we had found that earlier, then Bruenor would not have been killed!
Sneaky’s and Drizzt's constitution were drained to 7!!! I nurtured them so that they would not die and then realised that was not a good idea. It would have been better for them to die and be resurrected.
On going down the stairs we came across a trapped chest and Sneaky showed her trust in us by deliberately standing upon it.
When raised, her constitution was back to normal.
We found a moonblade, but none of us can use it!!

Areas Battled: Lion's Way, Carnival, Beregost, South of Nashkel, FAI
Traveling with:
Minsc, level 4 ranger, 33 HP
Imoen, level 5 thief, 32 HP
Coresorc, level 4 sorcerer, 25 HP
When we last left the carnival, they had just given Dynaheir a permanent vacation at the Carnival. The party dealt with an exploding ogre quite easily. We left Zordral alone for the moment, since Coresorc doesn't know resist fear yet.
We had enough gold to buy antidotes for everyone, then headed to deal with the spider infestation in a house in Beregost. With sleep, they were easily dealt with. We brought these things to the FAI. On the way to FAI, just met a ridiculous amount of gibberlings - they even attacked Coresorc at one point. He ran to Minsc (who was battling some Xvarts at that moment) and then the gibberlings ignored him -- good thing he was out of sleep spells.
Once at the FAI, the party rested. Coresorc doesn't have resist fear yet (heck, at that moment in time he couldn't even cast a single level 2 spell), but he was pretty sure the party could adapt. As Coresorc suspected an assassin moved up to talk to Minsc. Coresorc and Imoen however, were at extreme range. So when Minsc ran around in fear, only he was caught in the effect, Imoen and Coresorc could attack. As it turned out, it ended up being a bit anti-climatic. While Tarnesh did get his mirror images up, a guard assisted, Coresorc blinded Tarnesh on Coresorck's first attempt, and Imoen got a critical - Tarnesh fell.
We gave Landarn the good news, sold our junk, including a magical wizard ring no one could use, and bought a large shield +1 for Minsc. We also retrieved Joia's ring for her (our rep still pretty low after killing Firebeard, so we do all the good rep quests we can).
The party then battled in the Lion's Way. We picked up a magical protection ring, fought off some dire wolves who both failed their save vs. sleep, and also retrieved a belt from an ogre, then...the game crashed! Grrrr...had to repeat this part. And in fact it OF COURSE went worse this time - for one, only ONE dire wolf failed their save vs. sleep - AND it attacked Coresorc dropping him to 1/2 life (he had a ranged weapon equipped when he got attacked). Coresorc equipped his staff and used a burning hands scroll on the dire wolf, and the party killed it next round. After the dire wolves were killed, Coresorc took this as an omen, and used a armor spell from scroll, just in case the ogre confrontation went worse.
Thankfully, it did not, the ogre still failed his save vs. sleep, and the piercing belt went to Coresorc naturally. The party eventually cleared the map, including battling yet another large mass of gibberlings, when Coresorc was out of spells too, of course. Minsc had no choice but to glug a few heal potions.
When we got to Beregost to sell, we also bought the short bow +1 for Imoen, mace +1 for Minsc, and magical ammo for Imoen and Coresorc. Coresorc heard about the various wolves near the Beregost Temple area, and though the party didn't have free action, Coresorc was fairly certain blindness should allow the party to deal with the vampiric wolves - he was right. All these wolves this area got each party member a level. This also got Coresorc his first level 2 spell - what to choose? While resist fear is important, casting 3 resist fears is rather redundant. So instead got web.
After headed to Nashkel, the web got put to good use to get Imoen some upgrades, south of Nashkel. Coresorc's familiar put the party invisible, the AI was off, and Minsc crept up to see where some Amnish mercenaries were. Minsc backed off, and Coresorc cast 2 webs one after another, just to be safe. Then the party ranged, Coresorc with his sling, Imoen her short bow and Minsc his throwing axes. This technique allowed the party to slay these enemies taking no damage in fact. The magical studded leather went to Imoen.
The group, two bandits, Zax and Val, put up a much better showing. For one Zal resisted blindness 3 times a row! The bandits got huge hits on Minsc, forcing him to glug a few heal potions to keep afloat. After the first blindness, had Imoen use her magical +1 arrows, we got to kill these guys fast. Eventually Zax did go down. Minsc charged Val, who even in melee got good hits on Minsc, despite Minsc's -5 AC. Finally, something went our way - Minsc did a 30 pt damage critical hit, and Val fell right after that. The bracers also went to Imoen. Since there's only 3 of us, all Thac0 improvements are very welcome. The rest of the area was cleared without much incident, though the game did crash again. Fortunately I had a save made just a minute before, so little was lost.
Our gold is now good enough, we can get some potions to insure obtaining Dushai's free-action ring. In my EasyTutu install, thieving potions do not stack. Imoen's pick-pockets is 25% - even with potions, think that's too risky, I still need to come back to Ulgoth's Beard. Therefore, we needed to battle in Beregost to get a bard to give us a hand for this task. We did beat Silke, thanks to blindness yet again, but Minsc got killed by a lightning bolt. We recruited Garrick, resurrected Minsc and headed to the Ankheg map. The key step was to use the familiar to invisibility 10' on the party, turn off the AI and walk to Ulgoth's Beard in safety.
Oops forgot, we stopped by Durlag's for a thieving potion and potion of perception, not realizing that Garrick can't use the potion of perception -- oops. Also forgot we stopped by FAI temple to get a potion of mind focusing, to help Garrick pick-pocket of course. We finally get in Ulgoth's Beard, Imoen loots a +1 hammer which no one needs, so is sold then Garrick uses the thieving potion and potion of mind focusing, putting pick-pocket at 110% - after two attempts, we finally got a free action ring for Minsc. Now the area South of Beregost, shouldn't be too much trouble and we can get the stealth boots.
We returned to Beregost, dealing with a wardog ambush on the way (not too much trouble with sleep), and bid Garrick goodbye. Session ended here. Probably will clear the road area between Nashkel and Beregost next session.

It's starting off with a sorceror that's the most difficult, though since you are not soling, it is a little easier if not easy.
Holy Warrior has a full party for fighting in Icewind Dale. That is, when they are not dead!!
We then took on the wailing death, thinking that by silencing them, we were safe. We could not have been more wrong. They killed three of the party, and two others were decidedly unhealthy. However they were not as unhealthy as our enemies!!
Obviously silence is not the way to deal with the wailing death. I'm wondering if casting deafness on the party would work. Anyone know the answer??
I have a little problem. After raising the dead, they cannot equip their personal weapons.
Bruenor cannot use his axe,
I strongly suspect that Drizzt would not be able to use his scimitars if he died. Does anyone know how I can equip these weapons? Using Shadowkeeper for example?

The hardest that I have ever fought and no reward other than an idol that summons a tanari.
Everyone except Drizzt and myself died and we almost died. I used all my potions of superior healing and several potions of extra healing even after we had won!!!
However I eventually became the winner!!!
I believe that to win this battle, you need to have experience cap disabled and to have a powerful party.
If I had not done the other mods first, I would not have survived.
Of course I haven't done Durlag's Tower, so that might have been equally helpful.
Drizzt took on the vampires single handed whilst I fought the wailing death and then the big boss.
When the vampires were dead, Drizzt came to help and he fell.
But who was he? No name given, but he has a sister! Who is she?
Clearly they are more to be feared than Sarevok!
Having found the idol, I am wondering if the use of it might have made the battle easier.
I haven't used it, and perhaps to do so would be deadly.
The points given when the boss died made me a level 9 fighter/level 9 cleric.
Sneaky missed out on the experience by dying on me, but resurrection will at least bring her back to life.
Any advice on re-equipping the dead characters will be gratefully accepted.

Ok, perhaps I should clarify - I DID equip the ring to see what it would do -- it didn't double my spells, so hence I sold it. I did need the cash to get important items for Minsc and Imoen, as well as potions. We have no healer, so being stocked up on potions a bit more critical than usual.Serg BlackStrider wrote...

It's quite strange - it should double the number of lvl1 castings per day for sorcerer. And it always do that in my games... regardless of whether or not it is identified of course.
What I can presume is that you look on the number of spells in your book (definitely it doesn't double their number for sorcerer) and not on the number of castings per day...

I've been thinking about this. I didn't rest -- if I did, perhaps I would have seen the double castings per day (that is what I was looking at). The other thing is the description says it doubles amount of 1st level spells one can memorize, but that isn't how it works for a sorcerer. E.g., when I rest , it says I can cast 5 blindnesses. But if I cast sleep then I can only cast 4 -- therefore, the blindness is not really "memorized" -- because if it were, I could still cast 5 blindnesses. Therefore I thought it didn't work for my sorcerer. Keep in mind this the first time playing a sorcerer for me, so when I run into things like this they are just unknown and I have to take a guess.

- Immediately got Imoen, Montaron, and Xzar and went to the Friendly Arm Inn, where I left them.
- Going solo, Riolin began questing. He quickly got Joia's ring and then went adventuring.
- At high hedge, Riolin cleaned out the entire map leveling up both classes. Now he is a 2/2.
- Went to Beregost and restocked ammunition supplies.
Anyone have any good areas I should go to next while soloing? I plan to go to level 3/3 before making a party of 3. I am going to put Imoen back in and add either Branwen or Viconia. Then I plan on adding the other 3 when my party hits level 5.

Areas battled: Gnoll Fotress, Nashkel Mines (Surface), Nashkel Mines, Carnival, Nashkel, Beregost
Traveling with:
Minsc: level 5 Ranger, 35 HP (he got TWO HP last level up - if he isn't careful, even Coresorc will over take him in HP and that's just not right - a mage should not have more HP than a fighter)
Imoen - level 6 Thief, 39 HP
Coresorc - level 5 Sorcerer, 31 HP
Picks chosen last level: magic missile, resist fear
The party had some unfinished business at the Gnoll Fortress - namely, they didn't loot the cave with the charisma tome. Coresorc figured they would also get good experience with ambushes to and from, and he was right about that (3 ogre ambush and 2 cave bear ambush). So the trio battled to the cave, and back to the bridge to leave the fortress - just no problems here, Minsc tanked great, and if any trouble fights sleep was more than enough to deal with them.
In fact, the only tricky part about this whole endeavor was two cave bear ambush on the way back to Nashkel. Coresorc had one blindness left, he used it and it took! So the party battled the cave bear that was blinded from range. The other bear was still neutral...hmmm..Coresorc decided to cast web since Minsc was immune..took a while for the bear to fail its save, but once it did, Minsc got to ranged distance the bear was taken down.
After selling everything, the party had enough for necklace of missiles - time to get that and deal with the Nashkel Mines problem. The party did a straight bee-line to Mulahey - only one tricky fight - on the 3rd level, Minsc was battling 2 spiders and the kobold commandos came down the bridge and attacked Coresorc at point blank range! Coresorc had no choice but to use 2 sleeps to calm things down...after Minsc finished the spiders he came back and finished the kobolds - could have been ugly though if Coresorc didn't have sleep available.
Once we got to Mulahey's cave, we finished the 4 Xan kobold guards, then the familiar put the party invisible. We moved down and ONLY Minsc showed himself. Mulahey moved to the entrance, Minsc fireballed the minions (some survived) - I wanted to bersek (Coresorc and Imoen are still invisible) but I knew Minsc's aura wasn't clear -- too late, Mulahey put rigid thinking on Minsc. No choice now, must help Minsc - Imoen with her magical +1 arrows, Coresorc with 2 magic missile scrolls - Mulahey fell quickly with this onslaught. However, now Minsc charged Coresorc and Imoen!
Coresorc and Imoen ran to Xan for protection - Minsc got caught on a wall, and dropped pursuit. A skeleton attacked Minsc, but even with no control of himself, it had no chance. Minsc eventually shook off the rigid thinking. We looted the place, destroyed the last few minions still alive and left the joint.
We traveled to the Carnival and got the 2 ogre berserker ambush - Minsc took a pounding, he had to run a lot. However, after the death of the last bersker we got some great news -- Imoen and Coresorc leveled! This was rather perfect timing, as Nimbul was the next target. Coresorc chose magic missile and resist fear.
We travel to Nashkel and report our success to the Mayor. The familiar was out of his pack for once, just to make sure of Nimbul's death the familar will help this fight. I was supposed to cast resist fear but forgot (oops) -- the party went invisible and approached Nimbul. Minsc talked to Nimbul, Imoen backstabbed, Coresorc did two rounds of magic missiles and the familiar did mirror image and attacked. Nimbul could not even get a spell off, and the familiar even got the killing blow.
We followed up on Mulahay's letters, and traveled to Beregost to talk to Tranzig. This time resist fear WAS cast - it didn't matter though, as Coresorc's magic missiles were too much for Tranzig to deal with and he was slain. A magical ring was in the spoils. We identified it, and bought full plate from the Smithy. This way Minsc can get better saves (he sure needs it), higher AC and better missile defence.
The session was ended here.

After the battle in Icewind Dale, the final battle was a bit tame. It took a long time, but the end was inevitable.
Just kept on supplying more cannon fodder using wand of monster summoning so that the party didn't get hurt.
The tanari that I had on my side may have speeded things, but only a little.
Am having problems with the multi-player in BG2 due to having installed the widescreen mod.
Widescreen and multi-player seem to be incompatable.
I have tried to uninstall widescreen and it doesn't work, so it looks like a full re-install. GRRR!

@Wise: About your weapon problem - I have heard other people who had the exact same problem (couldn't equip Drizzt's weapons) - never heard of a solution, they just equipped a normal weapon for him. They also said that Drizzt was still a power-house, even with normal weapons. This was quite some time ago..if you have the current version of Drizzt's Saga, guess it's never been fixed...
I have just found the answer. Switch off your computer!
It might not be necessary to do that, closing down the game (totally) might be sufficient.
On the same theme, does anyone know how to get rid of energy drain other than death. Restoration doesn't seem to work.

If you can't uninstall widescreen sounds like your installation is bugged. Presumably you've tried uninstalling later mod components first and working backwards to widescreen. Also sounds like a bug with energy drain if restoration is not getting rid of that.

Widescreen is incompatible with multi-player because it prevents you going into windowed mode. This is only needed at the start of the game, so it is possible to uninstall, create a game, save to single player and reinstall.

Had 42 mods installed after widescreen mod. About 5 before.
I think that I'll just start afresh with the new worldmap etc.
I'll have to read the installation instructions again so as to get a better order.
I don't like the widescreen mod anyway so it is a good excuse to get rid of it.

Areas Battled: area with girl and dead cat, area with Samuel, High Hedge, Parts of Bassilus map
Traveling with Minsc and Imoen
Even though Coresorc did a lot of battling, not much of significance has occurred. The hostiles near the waterfall and the little girl were of no problem for the party. The area with Samuel, lots of gibberlings, but lots of sleeps thrown around, so not much trouble there either.
High Hedge was cleared without much incident as well. Despite Minsc's free action and -5 AC, 3 ghasts hit him hard (meaning lots of heal potions gulped), and we had to re-stock on potions after High Hedge was cleared. We brought Melicamp to Thalantyr, but Thalantyr failed to save Melicamp.
For Bassilus we used a single fireball, web and Imoen used her +1 arrows. Then Coresorc slinged (he would have magic missiled, but was unnecessary as Bassilus was stuck in the web) and Minsc used his throwing axes (he still has a stack of 20 throwing axes we got from Nimbul). Bassilus failed to get a single spell off. The warhammer wasn't much use, other than to sell. But the 5000 gold reward was enough to get some important items from Ulgoth's Beard. We got the cloak of displacement for Coresorc and greenstone amulet for Minsc from Ulgoth's Beard.
The trio returned to Bassilus area and is working on clearing the area of hostiles.

Sighting run: Merro the Cavalier with Savvy the Blade. Not a no-reload and plenty of needless deaths.
1. Nawgrim Fighter/Illusionist with Peer Fighter/Cleric. Nawgrim died inspecting a cabinet leaving Brynnlaw.
2. Nadir Berserker with Kaxir kensai. Kaxir chunked in Spellhold while in his inventory. Nadir retired.
3. Not posted. Berserker and Paladin. Berserker Rage expired with < 15hp after Miriannes ogres killed.
4. Boor Berserker with Perry Barbarian. Perry chunked by Shadow Dragon. Boor chunked moments later.
5. Scion Berserker > Mage and Cyill cleric/ranger. Scion de-buffed and killed by beholders changing focus.
(I think that's the lot and in the right order)
Attempt 6.
Mayse the human bhaalspawn ranger (planned dual to cleric at tender level of 9). Mis-handled by Gate70.

Plus Khazad the dwarf berserker. Driven crazy by Grond0.

After sorting out Candlekeep we borrowed items from Imoen, Xzar and Montaron. Killed Shoal, helped Marl and Firebead. Bought a scroll of Protection from Petrification at a carnival and killed some basilisks then Mutamin. The greater basilisk near Mutamin managed to hit Khazad quicker than he could glug healing potions and after about 5-6 hits the dwarf expired. Mayse ran, got blocked by trees but still managed not to face a gaze. She found Korax the ghoul and got him to finish the final two basilisks in the area. Korax went to say hello to Kirian but a cave bear and gnolls finished him off before he could do anything.
600gp was required to raise Khazad leaving 36gp spare, so the next task was to kill Bassilus and collect a fat reward. After that we picked up some girdles and found the owner of a drowned kitten before stopping for a rest near the entrance to Nashkel mine.
Mayse has 14+7+9+10+14=54hp at level 5.
Khazad has 15+9+12+11=47hp at level 4.

Areas battled: Brage map, Ulcaster School, both Sirines maps, Drizzt area, Area directly north of Nashkel
Traveling with:
Minsc - level 6 ranger, 50 HP
Imoen - level 7 thief, 47 HP
Coresorc - level 7 sorcerer, 38 HP (with familiar)
The party defeated the hostiles north of Nashel without incident. Minsc continues to tank great. Coresorc continues to defend himself quite well in the ambushes. And Imoen stays out of trouble and pegs the enemies with her short bow.
We also cleared Drizzt area, again without much incident. For the bandits in the center (a mage, archer and melee), the party first concentrated on Jemby the mage, Imoen with her short bow and Coresorc his magic missiles - two rounds of this finished the mage. Then Coresorc blinded the archer, and just mop up after that. Coresorc wanted to do something with Drizzt, though he was sure attacking would not be a good idea.
So instead, the party recruited Garrick once more. We got a potion of mind focusing and potion of thieving for Garrick. We then came back to the Drizzt Area, Garrick gulped the two aforementioned potions, the party stood away, and Garrick attempted to pick-pocket Drizzt -- success! Garrick got a scimitar (was later identified as the +3 one). Garrick tried once more...and Drizzt caught him! The party ran, Garrick got slaughtered, and we fled the map.
We identified the +3 scimitar, and Minsc decided he will dual-wield it with his +1 mace. Out of thankfulness for Garrick's help, we resurrected Garrick and kicked him out of the party once more.
We paid a visit to the coast, and helped some archaelogists. We found an idol that we thought Thalantyr would want (which indeed he later bought). However, when we came outside, some doomsayer attacked us. At first, Minsc charged with Drizzt's scimitar, Imoen +2 arrows and Coresorc opened with web. The web DID manage to hold the doomsayer, which was fantastic. However, I noticed Imoen's arrows weren't doing anything - yikes! Guess only +2 MELEE weapons can hit it...well Imoen does have a +2 short sword, but don't think I want her getting that close, so she used the magic missile wand she had instead for the rest of the fight. Coresorc did magic missiles for the rest of the fight....and success! Minsc got the killing blow though...

We also encountered Brage's relative in the area..we tried tell her we had to deal with Brage, but she attacked and was slain. We brought Brage to the temple, the priest of helm was happy about that.
We then got some potions of mirror eyes, so that we could travel to Ulcaster School (sometimes baslisk ambush happens on the way to or from). Turned out didn't need it. We then met a dangerous skeletal warrior (Icharyd), but he was slain. Now that Misnc is dual-wielding, he's really starting to put the beat down on the enemies (he has almost 50% of the party's kills as it is). The party dealt with the various wolves in the Ulcaster School dungeon just fine. The jellies required some care, as Imoen can't even hurt the jellies with her short sword +2. We need more damage dealing, so in a rare appearnce, the famliar was brought out to help whittle these jellies down faster -- that worked, no deaths.
Next up were the two sirine maps. Basically, Coresorc cast many webs, and did web every time on the sirines (after they showed themselves), Minsc protected by the greenstone amulet - sirines were no problem this way. After killing the flesh golems in the cave, Coresorc is now level 7. He got a level 1 spell, and chose protection from petrification. He got a level 2 spell and chose invisibility (it could save his life in the cloakwood ambushes). He got a level 3 spell also and chose MMM. Coresorc gave the CON to Minsc, as Coresorc already is +2 over his effective CON, so it's not much help to him, but the extra CON would help Minsc tank the ogres better - the CON tome finally got Minsc's HP more than Imoen's.
The party is thinking about paying the basilisks at Durlag's a visit, now that Coresorc can protect the party.
