As I'm sure you know that Daj couldn't dual to anything (as being Dwarf).

Good spot Serg, I expect Grond0 was lured by the shorty saving throws then decided the class.

I have just come accross a mod that will allow him to do exactly as he wishes. It is called
Throne of Bhaal Extender (TobEx)ToB.

If anyone has any experience of it, I would be grateful for any input, as I am currently doing a new installation of SoA and am considering installing that mod. It has some good ideas.

Why shouldn't a dwarf be a paladin for instance?

That restriction, and several others are quite racist.

That does not mean that I expect NPCs to be politically correct.

It makes the game more realistic and more fun if they are not.

We don't have to agree with their stances after all.

Also, does anybody know if it can be installed in Tutu?

It is part of SCS now (at least  the first component labelled "TobEx - Core" ) so it definitely can be installed in TuTu (well, it should be EasyTuTu ToB version, not SoA). I haven't experience with it's Extras tho so can't comment on them.

As Serg says it's only the main component that gets bundled with SCS, but if you install TobEx first the extras are fully compatible with SCS. I did install the race restriction removal component for a while and it seemed to test OK, though I never actually ran a proper character using it - I felt bad about the idea of having both shorty bonuses and ability to dual.

The only extras component I remember not liking was the one that allows things to wake up from sleep when damaged. That's consistent with PnP and I would have liked it if it only applied to the sleep spell, but it also applied to anything else using the sleep effect (such as command and emotion) and that didn't seem right to me.

Stile has made substantial progress in her quests.  Initially I was pushing her through encounters pretty fast; she got up to level 5 rapidly thanks to Shoal and various encounters in the Beregost and Nashkel areas, Friendly Arm Inn, plus a trip to Firewine to get Meilum's bracers.

At that point she went to the mines and rapidly cleared them (by then she had a second pip in short bow).  The bandit camp was also pretty easy once Raemon and Britik made the mistake of following her out of the tent without the others.

The challenge in the cloakwood was to avoid tripping a web trap while something was visible.  This was successfully done, though pulling ettercaps one by one towards constantly regenerating spiders was a bit tedious and also used a lot of arrows.  At the mine Genthore was initially attacked and pulled away from the others and eventually shot down, though again used a lot of ammunition in the process.  Drasus was next, but a quick test showed Stile was no match for him in melee (and too quick to run and shoot) so I decided to give her a decent chance by running away to get better prepared.

That preparation started with Caldo & Krumm providing a belt to help against Drasus.  The main focus was then on reputation quests:
- Bjornin was avenged against some half-ogres
- Melicamp evaporated leaving only afew feathers behind
- Ardrouine was grateful her son was safe
- Brage decided to come quietly into protective custody
- Charleston Nib praised her, although that was before she showed her true colours by running away from the doomsayer (which is immune to missiles).
- in a slight diversion she punished some fishermen plotting against the gods (this time the priestess survived to hear the good news - level 7).
- dived into the ankheg nest and sniped at the ankhegs from range so they couldn't fight back.  She used a hill giant strength potion to reunite the farmer with his son.
- helped another farmer with his zombie problem, but he refused to put in a good word for her so she remained on 19 reputation.
- next attempt was the long trip south to pick up a dead cat.  This was more difficult than it might have been as her journey across the map enticed 4 separate winter wolves into attacking him, but eventually he was able to speak to Drienne.  She didn't accuse her of killing the cat, but still no extra reputation.
- after crawling back to Nashkel burdened with 3 winter wolf pelts (84 lbs putting her exactly 20% over normal capacity), she bought two strength potions at High Hedge and rescued Samuel.

Finally, with 20 reputation, she will go and do a bit of shopping and then resume the main quest line.  Here's her current character record - after a good start with HPs the last 2 levels have been poor, dragging her back to just below average.

Trendan the level 5 solo Undead Hunter enters Trilogy no-reload challenge...

I actually had another entry, not posted, but he died to the spiders in Beregost (he got pinned in when he tried to escape the house). That paladin didn't have max DEX...so I re-rolled my undead hunter, this time patiently rolling until I got 91, which was exactly what I needed to max fighting stats as well as have 9 INT so I can use scrolls and wands. I didn't want another long slog in BG 1, so being solo to get through it quicker, but will be a group in BG 2.

Trendan character sheet
Posted Image
** axe
** long bow
* two-hand sword

Trendan's progress so far:
* After leaving Candlekeep, Trendan headed through High Hedge to Beregost. In Beregost, Marl was calmed, Firebeard got his book, and Marriane got her letter. This was enough for level 2. Trendan then proceeded to Nashkel, using throwing axes mostly, including a battling flaming fist mercenary, which got Trendan some plate mail to use.

In Nashkel, Trendan sold and obtained the Ankheg armor, only to sell that too and then go to Beregost to get his +1 battle axe. He had enough left over to get 5 antidotes and then the Beregost spiders were dealt with easily. That fight got him to level 3 - he felt confident to make his way to FAI, bypassing the masses of gibberlings for now. He obtained a wizard ring, got Joia her ring back, and dealt with a mage assassin. Fortunately Trendan was protected by clarity potion, or it could have been bad, as he did fail his save vs. horror...

With these new funds, full plate was bought from the Beregost smithy. Time to help Bjorrin out. As it turned out, Trendan met and defeated two vampiric wolves on the to the Drizzt area, which got him to level 4. He did in fact beat the 4 ogrillions and reported to Bjorrin back in Beregost to get Trendan his new shield.

Neira still wasn't dealt with, mainly as no rigid thinking defense yet. But we could with greenstone amulet, so then Trendan went south of Nashkel, helped out a boy and his "dog", went West and found a magical halberd, went west again and easily defeated two ogrillions with protection from evil, went to FAI to identify this stuff (so I would have money for the greenstone amulet), but got ambushed by about 8 gibberlings. Trendan held his ground and this ambush got Trendan to level 5.

Trendand did eventually sell the dex gauntlets, get the greenstone amulet and also went south to deal with Neira. The greenstone amulet was indeed important, as Trendan failed his save vs. rigid thinking - but it had no effect since the greenstone amulet was active, and Neira was defeated. Trendan obtained the necklace of missiles, rested and will next try to deal with the Nashkel Mines problem.

Good luck Corey.
Grond0, planning to use an absorbtion potion against Drasus/Genthore? (as it can last for Hareishan and if careful also for Davaeorn) With boots of speed it is possible to drag the trapped lightning bolt into Hareishan's room, and attack her guards until she casts a second bolt. With two bolts in that area the guards can get thinned down very quickly.

Metley, TN human male shapeshifter

Int 18, Wis 18, Cha 18.
Str 9, Dex 18, Con 11.
* dagger, * single weapon style.

I'm experimenting. Some enemies are fairly easy to kill, while others such as ankhegs need to be avoided at all costs. I cannot protect myself from fear for long so most spellcasters are out of bounds. A potion of clarity works wonders against Sil and five more sirines but I decide not to investigate a nearby cave.

Several lesser basilisks are no danger thanks to a protection from petrification scroll, but a greater basilisk makes me glug six healing potions before I can kill it. Korax the ghoul helps against Mutamin and his greater basilisk.

& evidence why it's tricky to use him elsewhere. I kill a pair of gnolls before he is targeted then use an amulet charge before attacking Kirian. Korax wanders over and manages to stun Baerin while the focus is on me. In the meantime I've killed Peter and am about to start glugging healing potions. Lindin hits Korax and is then stunned himself at the second attempt.
Posted Image

Korax stuns Kirian but a kobold commando attacks him, and I know from previous experience that he is very fragile.
Posted Image

I can't kill the kobold quickly enough and Korax is gone. Baerin recovers at badly injured but I kill him. I know Lindin will recover next but Kirian is more worrying so I attack her instead. She recovers to Melf me as I kill her.
Posted Image

Lindin is tough, requiring all my potions. Then I have to run away, transform and heal. I return to doom him and cast flame blade but decide I cannot fight so run a bit further and transform. My first attack misses so I move away and return for a critical hit.
Posted Image

Currently level 7, won't be trying that again in a no-reload.

Stile continued her adventures with a shopping trip in Ulgoth's Beard.  She paid out hard-earned cash for the green amulet and cloak of displacement, but was fortunate enough to find a ring of free action on the floor after her archery practice was interrupted by Dushai.

Back at the Cloakwood mine a potion of absorption more than cancelled out Drasus' other fighting advantages.  A charge from the greenstone amulet combined with her bow to end the challenge from Kysus and Rezdan.

I've not tried Gate70's suggestion of using the lightning trap against Hareishan before (normally I just bypass her) so gave that a go.  It worked reasonably well, though Stile still had to back himself into one of the little rooms to deal with all the guards left one at a time before emerging with another amulet charge to finish off Hareishan.

After going down to Daveorn she used the ring of invisibility to trigger traps and rest and then again to pull the battle horrors into a side room out of sight of her fighting.  Then she sniped at Daveorn to get rid of a few of his mirror images whilst he was jumping around with dimension door.  This time I did manage to get her to successfully use a potion of magic blocking - that lasted just long enough to soak up Daveorn's remaining spells before a bit more shooting and running put him out of his misery.

Finally in the city she heaved the tome of dexterity out a barrel to get that identified and then went after Ramazith.  She had to rest twice to heal damage on the way up, but a combination of invisibility, potion of firebreath and her sword ensured that Ramazith had a bad day.  She has also just picked up the helm of Balduran and will continue her scavenging next session.

Trendan the level 7 undead hunter (solo) continues his adventure...

Trendan has continued to make progress. A number of mages were basically defeated with arrows of biting (Tranzig, Zordral, Silke). Trendan is -4 AC, 82 HP now. He has also defeated battle horrors guarding Durlag's Tower, using potion of hill giant strength, heroism and a ton of heal potions. His main melee weapon is now the two hand sword +1, though soon will be changed to the spider's bane. Melium was ran around a rock formation, being peppered by +1 arrows, to give Trendan an upgraded bracers. Kahrk was left alone...at least for now.

I can't seem to get to the bandit camp in EasyTutu unless I join them, so I did. I managed to talk Tazok into letting me join the camp, without having to fight him. Trendan pretty much ignored almost the entire camp - he did loot some containers that weren't locked, but otherwise went straight for Tazok's tent.

The plan? Trendan put up a potion of magic blocking and entered Tazok's tent. He fired two arrows of biting at Venkt, but Venkt saved vs. death. So as not to give thaco/damage bonus to the melees, Trendan then just did straight melee on one of the melees - one of the melees died before the 1st potion of magic blocking expired. Switched to the other melee with Trendan's two hand sword +1 -- during this he did have to put up his potion of magic blocking again and he took about 50% damage until he finally slew the 2nd melee. Arrows of biting then finished Venkt. The remaining archer was brought into melee and quickly fell. A potion of absorption made sure there was no trouble looting the important chest -- ah Cloakwood my next target.

Going pretty good so far, not having any serious trouble.

Final update for Stile.

First (and nearly last) action was in the Umberlee temple, where Jalantha resisted all attempts to interrupt her spells and 2 flame strikes saw Stile needing to save against the second to survive (the arrow in mid-air is about to kill Jalantha).  With HPs so low she ran out of the temple to give herself plenty of room to manouvre - meaning the citizens in this area became hostile.  Another giant strength potion was used to take the boy's body away to get a shield (level 8).  To make this usable Stile got some healing at a temple and then dealt with Desreta and Vay'ra to get the ogre gauntlets.

Next she quickly ran through the poison quest in order to get Marek's bow.  For the third encounter in a row none of her acid arrows interrupted any spells and she had to endure 2 lightning bolts before Marek fell.  The bow quickly proved its value - able to hit Larze with a 2 and doing a critical on him of 48 HPs.

After healing again she investigated the Iron Throne with the help of her ring (go invisible, rest, talk to Thaldorn, go invisible) and got sent to Candlekeep by the Duke.  There she looted the tombs using scroll magic protection and storm giant strength.  Only slight problem was when her stack of arrows ran out and the default selection of arrows of explosion hurt her as well as some spiders.  However, the last couple of spiders soon died in the lightning trap.  A potion of invisibility (didn't rest to recharge the ring) saw her safely out and back to the city.

Resting gave her holy might and that was quickly put to use against Slythe (along with cloud giant strength and speed).  Stile then chopped down Quenash and ran before Krystin could get into the action.  She went straight over to get the wisdom tome from the body of an unfortunate priest and then reorganised her inventory - selling her shield, invisibility ring and ogre gauntlets to make more room for potions.

After resting (and getting vampiric touch ability) she prepared for the fight at the palace as follows:
- temple donation
- vampiric touch on a resident of a building outside the palace
- potions of storm giant strength, speed, heroism, mind focusing, invulnerability, regeneration and DUHM
No problem in killing the dopplegangers, but there was another nasty moment when Belt fell - fortunately Liia survived to send Stile on her way after Sarevok.

The same buffs were used to clear the maze, though the regeneration had to be refreshed against the skeleton warriors.  Then she bought back the ring of invisibility! That was used to go and get the constitution tome without fighting and then subequently the last wisdom tome at Durlags Tower (also used one of the two remaining charges on the greenstone amulet there to protect against the trap).

After retrieving the pantaloons she was ready for the final battle.  The invisibility ring took her into the temple safely and she buffed up with a selection of potions.  Then I realised she had not put the scroll of magic protection on!  That means no potions of dexterity (which hurts her THAC0 a bit) and no spare potions of speed.  However, her missile attacks should still be too much for this gang.

Finally ready she approached Sarevok.  First action was to dispel him and Angelo and then three arrows of explosion finished off the latter.  Another dispel and a couple more explosions dealt with Semaj.  Tazok appeared shortly after and became another explosive victim leaving Sarevok alone and helpless against a barrage of acid arrows.  I ran him through a web trap a few times and managed to get him stuck and tried to judge when to use vampiric touch to finish him off in style.  This attempt failed, but seconds later he gave up the ghost anyway.

Here is her final record - HPs include the 5 bonus from helm of Balduran, so she is 5.5 HPs below average for her level.

Nice work Grond0.

Metley, TN human male shapeshifter
Nashkel mine has kobolds, traps, spiders and a half-orc cleric called Mulahey. He runs away, leaving me to face six skeletons and six kobolds. As soon as they are gone I transform to return the compliment and charmingly empty his spellbook. I'm keen to join in but the entangles last longer than he does.

Amazons against three nymphs and two dogs. Maneira has killed everything with her darts of wounding and turns to me as I cast. I'm beaten to it by an earlier spell, leaving Lamahla alone. I cast doom and move away to consider my next move as another bolt of lightning crashes down. Once the entangles have cleared I suffer from inventory overload.

Nashkel sees me returning a ring to the wife of Joseph then informing Berrun Ghastkill that his mine issues are a thing of the past. Nimbul gets a monster shock. Meilum also falls for the nymph/dog/lightning ploy.

There are directions to the bandit camp on the corpse of Tranzig. More nymphs and war dogs dispose of Ardenor Crush and his hobgoblins but struggle against the bandit arrows. Another rest and more nymphs make it to Taugosz Khosann as his bandits kill the war dogs. He is dominated, so I switch him to fists. He recovers immediately to be held so I call down some lightning.

I expect I will be outnumbered in the bandit tent so leave more summons outside in case I have to retreat. I hit Raemon and run but three of them follow and block me so I return inside the tent. Raemon follows so I hit him again and he's down. I step outside where nymphs and dogs are dealing with Venkt and Britik. Back inside to tear Hakt apart, then a rest to memorise protection from lightning.

Going OK but the summons are a bit fragile. Can't see this tactic working in the Iron Throne HQ let alone against Sarevok so going to need to look at options if I get that far.

Trendan the level 8 Undead Hunter - FINAL BG 1 Update

When we last heard from Trendan he was working his way through the Cloakwood. His main plan was protection from magic scroll and a few potion buffs, this took out Drassus and pals. Trendan fought all the way to Davaeorn's level, defeating the battle horrors in melee (heroism potion and STR 19 potion), used up ALL his heal potions, then the protection from magic expiried! I had wanted to run all the way here, but didn't remember where the invisibility potions were. He did all the buffs he could and charged Davaoern -- arrows of biting won the day for Trendan yet again, though he did get down to 50% health.

Once in Baldur's gate, did very few battles/quests here. DEX and INT tome were obtained, did the quest for upgraded shield, obtained helm of balduran, and battled the Mountain Maulers. The plan was to draw the enemies to Gorpel Hind, to buy me more time. This worked out great. Now Trendan retires the spider's bane and uses the battle axe +2 almost exclusively.

Time to deal with the iron throne baddies. Used magic protection scroll, potion of mind focusing, potion of fire resistance (in case Trendan throws fireballs around himself), STR 23 potion, and haste and regeneration potion. This destroyed the enemies, taking only a little damage himself. Using the BG 2 engine allows potions being active when the scroll of magic protection is active, what a huge boon.

Trendan was then sent to candlkeep. Scroll of magic protection was again used and the STR 24 potion to bash some crypts in to get the tomes. Only the initial doppleganger and the spiders were fought. Trendan then used an invisibiilty potion to get through the rest of the crypts.

Back in the city of Baldur's Gate, Cythrandria and her goons were defeated primarily with STR 23 potion, potion of absorption, potion of magic protection and greenstone amulet. The potions were still active when the battle was over, so then headed straight to Slythe. Arrows of dispelling made Slythe much less of a threat. Kristin wasn't too much problem, since his potion of magic protection was still active.

Potions were still active, so headed to Duchal, only adding buffs haste, protection from evil, regeneration, and DUHM (putting Trendan's STR to 25). Lia died, but Belt survived. But had to find the dopplegangers, two were hding in the basement.

Scroll of magic protection and invisibiilty potion were used to get through the thieve's maze and skip the Undercity Iron Throne party.

Time for the main event. Here is a link to the resources I had before the battle, the protection from magic scroll was still active.

I did a lot of potion buffs, and moved foward. I fired a shot from Trendan's necklace of missiles and dispelled Sarevok's buffs. A web then came, presumably from Semaj -- so far, so good.

Trendan then backed off, just outside the web, hoping that Sarevok would park himself in the web, he sometimes fails his save. The battle was going well at first, Sarevok near death, but then all of Tredan's buffs get dispelled! Yikes!
Posted Image

I got the whole crew on Trendan. Tazok is meleeing, Semaj casting spells and Angelo is in the mix too! I tried to melee for a few moments, but Trendan's health rapidly decreased to less than 10%, Sarevok refuses to fall! So Trendan used a haste potion, the idea to run and heal etc. However, Angelo came through for Trendan - Angelo slew Sarevok!
Posted Image
In my EasyTutu, it takes a few seconds for Sarevok's death to register, so Trendan ran way so Tazok didn't get a hit...success! Sarevok is dead...

Extremely close call, but glad to make it to BG 2.

Thanks Serg. I think there's little danger of that -- I like to get the most I can out of runs -- meaning, to have the runs as long as I can. This of course means both minimizing risk, or avoiding it altogether if needed (like dragons). By personality I am not a "thrill seeker". I will usually take the slow and sure path.

Grond0, on the other hand -- he has many a run where he intentionally doesn't do what he know he should (whether it be pre-buffing or avoiding an encounter for later) to make it more "exciting". Although I haven't seen him do that real recently, maybe he's grown out of that habit...

Not for me. I've just had a paladin run where he was killed by the hobgoblins at the FAI!!

Now THAT is ridiculous!!

Well done Corey! Angelo killing Saravok reminds me of a run I did using no weapons and killing nobody. Angelo helped there for me too. It was NOT a no-reloads run.

To save buying antidotes to poison, you could have upped your charisma at the gnoll stronghold and then visited Landrin. You are then given 6 potions free!

You have to have charisma 18 before Landrin gives them to you.

Just in case you didn't know.

@USSNorway: There have been a lot of paladins lately, it's true. Of course I did try a sorcerer, who failed (with a party). I think I just play melees better, especially solo for BG 1, though my paladin easily could been slain at the final fight.

@Wise: I know about getting the CHA tome and then talking to Landrin - but money for potions was NOT a problem, being solo. Also, it's possible to get a 2 ogre mage ambush on the way to the gnoll stronghold - pretty dicey ambush level 1 or 2 and solo. In EasyTutu they like casting stinking clouds - not a fun spell to see if solo.

Introducing Locus, human kensai

I'll have another go at trying to manage a kensai dual to thief.

The (current) intention is to make this a risk-free BG1 run.  Thus far nothing has managed to attack him  (his 1 HP damage is from the Gorion ambush).  The only thing that took a while to finish off was Karlat - who survived for two full laps around the Beregost map.  All Locus' weapon proficiency points are in staff, so he's not as good at hitting with throwing axes at the moment as he might be.

Here's his character record about half an hour into the game. He's at Nashkel having done Shoal and the Beregost encounters.

Introducing Valando Reisenstar, Elf Skald;

Posted Image

I always knew that there was something different about me... it’s not every Elf that hears the Harpers call but I’ve continuously felt certain there is more to it than that, the guarded whispers from the watchers when they think I’m not around was my first clue & the look on my foster fathers face when any one starts speaking the old proficies but more than any thing else it’s the chastely polite way that my kindred greet me whenever their circumstances require them to visit Candlekeep that just screams outsider!

Modifications;

Evidently my clsrcreq file has been modified to allow Elves to take non-standard classes because I’ve been meaning to start an Elven Bard for a while but RL hasn’t been exactly plan sailing lately... excuses aside, Valando needed a special item (none of my large list of modded items seemed suitable) that fits his distinct heritage so I made him some durable boots from (what is now an extinct spiked verity of) Ankeg called stachelig. The sharp spikes make these boots hazzardous in combat and are magicly enchanted to grow when extra grip is needed +1 THAC0 & ‘Freedom‘ (once per day).
