I'm going to switch gears and I'm going back to randomly generated characters. While a real time game can be done, it would be very frustrating if not irritating. I don't like playing irritating games where I have to force myself not to hit the space bar. Maybe I'll try it again later but not at this moment.

Banzai the kensai update

Banzai is now at the palace, only 2 encounters away from dealing with Sarevok.

Starting at the Nashkel mines he used a charge from the shield amulet to get down to Mulahey pretty unscathed.  A nice shot from the necklace of missiles deprived Mulahey of support and made him try and give up.  Banzai answered with his staff, but a critical miss made him go outside to dodge a hold person before finishing Mulahey off.

Back in Nashkel the ring of invisibility allowed him to sneak up on Nimbul and dispatch him with a single kai blow.  The same tactics were used on Tranzig - he didn't die, but did give up immediately.

At the bandit camp another use of the shield amulet helped clear the guards.  Taugosz was charmed to finish off those outside and act as a support when Banzai dragged some of the main characters out of the tent.  With them all dead Banzai decided Taugosz had lasted long enough.

With invisibility and free action rings available Banzai had the luxury of being able to wave at the ettercaps as he strolled past.  On to the mine, where Drasus was pulled away and charmed before Genthore suffered the same treatment.  With them joining in the assault the mages didn't last long.

Invisibility was used to sneak down to Daveorn, but I made a mistake pulling the battle horrors away.  The intention was to leave them helpless in the side room, but Banzai didn't move fast enough and got trapped in a corner.  However, a bit of potion buffing later and a kai assault cleared an exit for him.  Adding a potion of absorption and green amulet protection allowed him to bore straight in on Daveorn.

Before going to the city he used invisibility to pick up the tomes from the pirate cave and Durlag's Tower (I didn't want any more XP, so enemies were left untouched).  In the city the only thing wanted was tomes - first dexterity and then intelligence.  For the latter he went invisibly up the tower and a critical turned Ramazith into a pile of tiny pieces.

After being sent to Candlekeep a scroll of magic protection and potion of storm giant strength allowed him to add a further 2 to his tome collection before sneaking out invisibly.  Back in the city he talked Larze out of attacking him and the pulled Slythe away to his doom.  A final use of Algernon's Cloak (before dumping that) persuaded Krystin to cloudkill Quenash to make Balduran's cloak available.

Nice going Gate70 - good luck with finishing things off.  With shooting from the shadows I like to pick a shot at extreme range and pause immediately after the shot is made.  You can then move away while the shot is in the air and be hidden before it hits the enemy.  It does depend on their script, but often that means that they don't react at all to the shot and you can come back the couple of steps you took for your next shot.

Yes, that's what I'm doing. Tried it before but this time without the auto-pause so moving a bit further away as a precaution.

BGT with core fixpack (& generalized biffing as the game lags on my linux laptop without it). Not sure you can call that unmodified but it certainly doesn't have lots of mods.

Ran into another hiccup, I can't play multiplayer in BG1 on the computer I installed the game on, now I could easily install BG1 on this computer that I'm on, or do various other things but I'm tired of jumping through hoops just to play Baldur's Gate so I will simply solo with the randomly generated character which turned out to be a thief. I will get into more details later. The game will be on core, and it will be vanilla all the way(no mods).

Welcome back Alesia!

Thanks Shadow_Leech! Good luck with your run!

Serg BlackStrider wrote...

@Alesia - I'm looking forward to follow Aliana

I'm glad to hear it. :)

(tho I think you are too hard to your current capabilities)

No argument here...

I don't expect Aliana to finish the challenge. Success with an Avenger would require a lot of experimentation and practice. This is basically just a fun run.

Completing BG1/SCS and SoA/SCS seems a reasonable goal: feasible and at the same time far from trivial.

ArchDragonDranovis wrote...

Just minor setbacks with the potential to kill you off very easily,

Indeed. Not the kind of setback I like. :P

I'm getting a little more comfortable with her. The Bandit Camp went well. She was never really in danger there.

Thanks. So will I. :D

Grond0 wrote...

@Alesia. Nice to see the animals working overtime, though the summoning limit is going to hurt when Aliana gets into BG2!

Yeah. I have the BG1 Style Summoning Spells component installed. I'm not convinced it makes sense to use that with Improved Bears...

In general, I'm unfond of summons: they can make you lazy and their ceiling isn't that high. They are satisfying from a RP viewpoint with Druids though.

ussnorway wrote...

Can (she) spit fire or is she too much of a lady?

Wait. Spitting fire is un-lady like? I always thought it was part of being a lady...

Bandit Camp Dress Rehearsal

Aliana is still alive.

A whole lot of bandits aren't.

I'll post on the Bandit Camp soon, but I thought I'd quickly write about the dress rehearsal: it was cool and druidy.

The dress rehearsal took place in Larswood against Teven and his crew. It was a nice opportunity to test out the battle plan.

Aliana scouted Invisible. She then faded and laid down a Web/Chaos brew.
Image IPB

With everyone disabled, it was time for death from above.
Image IPB

Teven was unusually courteous. He failed his saved against Call Lightning, saved against Web, approached Aliana, and then failed against Web right at the very edge of the danger zone- allowing Aliana to flip Spider and pump him full of poison in safety. He's a true gentleman (for a bandit that is...).
Image IPB
Image IPB

Once Teven was loaded up, Aliana stepped right and finished the remaining bandit with a COrb. They croaked at the same time.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Anyhoo. I'm starting to feel more comfortable with Aliana. Bandit Camp soon.

Best,

A.

 Aliana at the Bandit Camp

Ok. Here's the Bandit Camp. I have just enough time to dash it off now.

Opened as per the dress rehearsal (though running Potion of Regneration+Oil of Speed this time).
Image IPB

The alarm sounded and the party began.
Image IPB

When Taugosz arrived, Aliana withdrew to her fallback position. A pair of Nymphs were waiting there with disablers at the ready.
Image IPB

Flamed Venkt- mostly to save a Greenstone Amulet charge.
Image IPB

Taugosz overcame the Nymph threat and caught Aliana's attention. Doom->COrb (Stun)->Dart of Stunning->Shapeshift Spider finished him.
Image IPB

Took down the rest of the camp in Spider form- occasionally flipping human to toss a spell. With an attack speed factor of 0 and a nice movement rate bonus, the Spider form is perfect of fighting large groups in open areas. Boots of Avoidance + Cloak of Displacement + Shield Amulet kept Aliana safe.
Image IPB
Image IPB

This was basically the end.
Image IPB

All that remained was a zombie apocolypse...
Image IPB

Fin!

Best,

A.

Btw. The Assasin crew caught up with Aliana near the Beregost Temple. Aliana knocked them off by being subtle, and then not so subtle.

Subtle. Approaching invisible, casting Protection from Lightning on self, and then casting Call Lightning on self.
Image IPB
Image IPB

Why did Aliana do that?
Image IPB

Subtle again. Still invisible, Aliana faded and then flicked Darts of Stunning at Zeela- disabling her before she got a chance to cast (SCS pre-buffs fired however).
Image IPB

Not so subtle: becoming a Salamander of Flaming Death- complete with a big fracking spear.

Elf stalker, Xachariah. No magic items, potions, etc.

Level 5. 55hp, armour class 3. 90% stealth. THACO 13 & 1.5apr with quarterstaff. 10 & 2.5apr with composite longbow & arrows.

When level 5 just isn't enough
According to Scar Baldur's Gate can be a dangerous place, but I'm lucky and find a series of pleasant experiences instead. I grab a tome of dexterity (no change to armour class or ranged THACO so no benefit). Petrine once more has her angel skin ring, Noralee her bracers, Kereph the sanctified skull of his brother and Varci Roaringhorn the life of his friend (2000gp, daylight robbery). I've mastered fighting with two handed weapons as a result.

I could continue like this (but from 38k to 75k xp would be a trawl) so back to the plot.

The Iron Throne HQ
I use my 100% stealth to sneak past a group of mercenaries and find two letters in a back room. Thaldorn doesn't talk until I suggest the waiting group outside are with me, and then he tells me everything. Duke Eltan promises me whatever I need, just name it. Actually I've been to collect my remaining arrows (332 now) and I'm even tempted to try and find a way into Candlekeep without a magic book. I'm sure there is a catacomb entrance round the back but can't find it, so try to talk the gatewarden into a free pass. No such luck, so I hand over a tome of great value.

Candlekeep
Koveras hands me a ring, it feels magical but I am loath to drop it. Into my backpack then, and as I turn to go he stares at my studded armour, helm, bow, arrows and staff. My keen elven ears catch his remark which I won't repeat here, but suffice to say he thinks I am not prepared for what lies ahead. I have a quick word with Tethtoril and Ulraunt before allowing myself to be arrested. Word is that I've been seen near Rieltar, lies as a) I was nowhere near him and B) I'd have been in the shadows.

Catacombs
Not much to say here. I hid in the shadows once, and walked out past doppelgangers, a fake Gorion, Prat the hired help, a pair of greater basilisks and Diarmid. Once outside I rest, learning how to cure poison. Hmm. I rest twice more, learning Draw on Holy Might each time.

Rescuing Duke Eltan
I shouldn't be doing this. Failing to hide as I approach the Fist HQ is a bad start, but I manage to keep my distance from the chasing mercenary and hide again. I fail again as I reach the door but nobody notices me hide again. I hide again as I enter and sneak upstairs to chat with Kent. He refuses to help me against Rashad the fake healer, and I miss with my staff as he casts mirror image. He starts casting (haste) so I retreat.

I sneak into the other room and sit on the bed to update my journal while Rashad has his buffs active. Once his images are gone I move closer to observe his movement. The twitches are slower so I move away, switch to my bow and shoot from the shadows. As I fade I can see he is indeed slower so a second arrow joins the first.

My arrows are precious so I switch back to my quarterstaff and start the backstabs. My first and third attempts land solidly, and he slumps to the ground. I sneak outside again and half carry the ailing duke to the harbour master.

The Blushing Mermaid undercellar
Larze the ogre is lucky. I could easily have shot him down, instead opting for a battle of wits. He's not convinced until I show him my meagre equipment and he realises I am nothing but a clueless berk.

Slythe
I'd forgotten about Slythe - he'd be no danger if I had decent equipment but he's fast and deadly while my armour and staff won't be up to the job in a straight fight. I think about my options and realise they are very limited.

I hit from the shadows with my staff (+7 to attack from shadows) and fade. Then I miss while he hits me (+5). I run, fail to hide twice as he is too close and retreat after getting hit twice more. He follows so I re-enter and leave again, finally shaking him. I rest peacefully, wishing that his perma-haste would wear him out.

Slythe II - the rematch
Backstabs are risky so I use my bow (+6 to attack from shadows). My first arrow hits and I have time to hide. My second misses and I only just hide in time as I have to move several strides. My third misses too and although I move in good time my hide fails (such is life) and he is on me. I've switched to my staff and run around while he injures me some more. I leap through the door and hide just as he arrives. Three hits have badly wounded me and I'm again forced to rest while he is inside the inn waiting for me.

Slythe III - the decider
I backstab him again but he hits me before I can retreat. As I escape through the door I am horrified to find he's got there before me so go back. He's ahead of me again and as I decide to run a second Slythe appears. Well really - one was hard enough.

They have me blocked in so I have to use the door, taking another hit as I go. My aura is still recharging so I cannot hide, and before I can move they are both on me again. Another hit and I return through the door again. Still blocked and as I turn to retreat they each hit me.

My hand is held high and starting to crumble as the two Slythes high-five each other (gits). My final thought is that Krystin will have the night of her life! Can't see how I could have beaten one of him anyway.

Sorry of your loss, Gate... This was a valiant attempt nevertheless.

@Alesia - Great crowd control! You may think about negotiator career or something like that :)

I play SCS (AI) nowadays and I found such enemies' behaviour (better call for help and all that) quite handy sometimes (allows me one-shoot 'em all with fireball or skull trap).

Hard luck Gate, but a good effort to get that far. I remember with some of the wizard slayer runs I attempted that Slythe was the most difficult challenge in the game.

 Quick Note on Aliana's Game:

Aliana has been doing some assorted cleanup work before heading into the Cloakwood. You'll see a recurring theme here.

Zargal and the Whistling Sword
Image IPB

Bassilus
Image IPB

Dushai (insects made more sense than a Web against Mrs. Ring of Free Action)
Image IPB

I usually leave Dushai alone but with Aliana's Spider form and oddles of Web casts per day, the ring was too hard resist.

Current character record and inventory.

 Quick Note on Aliana's Game:

Aliana traversed the Cloakwood with ease thanks to liberal use of Pixie Dust. The welcoming party at the mines wasn't all that welcoming but it was fun in the end.

Took minimal buffs then opened with Web+Insect Plague.
Image IPB

Next, the lightning. There wasn't much life left in Drasus after this strike.
Image IPB

Used the Necklace of Missles and Wand of the Heavens to get over the top of Kysus and Rezdan's Globes. Interestingly, both managed to cast through Insect Plague.
Image IPB

Finished Genthore in Spider form.
Image IPB

Fin!

Best,

A.

NW: I'm leaning towards retiring Aliana if and when she finishes BGI (or perhaps sooner). Her run has served its purpose as a warm up and I'd prefer to head into BGII with a character that has a legitimate chance to finish.

A brief Update of BlackStrider (Priest of Helm) & Co (tho much were done):

At the moment we finished nearly all possible city tasks (save Sorcerous Sundries second floor mages, Ogre Mages assassins and Iron Throne building) collecting exp, stuff and money.
Meanwhile I hit my last BG1 level (8). Excessive use of Wands of Heavens helped much - no one can stand vs triple Flame Strike.

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

Image IPB Image IPB Image IPB

At the moment we are morally preparing for battle vs SCS Iron Throne buddies...

Current state:
BlackStrider - Priest of Helm (8), 287 kills (Seniyad);
Imoen - Thief (6) / Mage (8) , 196 kills (Invisible Stalker); 1 death (Shoal's kiss);
Jaheira - Fighter (6) / Druid (7), 717 kills (Kahrk);
Khalid - Fighter (7), 651 kills (Davaeorn);
Dynaheir - Invoker (8), 127 kills (Vampiric Wolf); 1 death (Delgod);
Viconia - Cleric (7), 59 kills (Doomsayer)

to be continued...

@Alesia: I just wonder - you are wandering in the midst of Web and Stinking Cloud (the combination that killed my Gloomy Face M/T) and I don't see buffs (other then lowering saving throws) that made it safe...   I know you have Ring of Free Action but I don't see it active... Got it :wizard: Thanks! I rarely used such potion buffs (Shielding, Blocking, Protection) in my pre-SCS runs so good to know :)

edit: Just looked over descriptions and found that Potion of Magic Shielding grants 50% resistance to all forms of magical damage and using it (yes, I have one from Drasus - I have Potions for NPCs with 50% Breakage installed  as well - or nearby) grants me 50% res vs Fire, Cold, Electricity, Acid and Magical Damage so how it protect vs poisonous Stinking Cloud, I still wonder (Pro Poison Scroll seems better in that matter)?

Potions of Magic Shielding are helpful in BG1. They can be mission critical in BGII.

FYI: Aliana got hers off of Drasus (I have Potions for NPCs with 50% Breakage installed). With those components, you can occasionally get one of of him if you disable him quick. Barring that, there is another nearby.

Stinking Cloud causes Sleep (39) with a Save v. Death to avoid.

Potions of Magic Shielding let you make all saves "automatically"  thus protecting you from the Sleep effect.

The only caveat here is that "the make all save effect" is implemented with a save bonus of 20. There are some situations in the gave where you could still fail a save while running a Potion of Magic Shielding (if you've been tagged repeatedly by Ascension Mel's Spear for example).

Will be some interesting reading here.

My no magic dwarf fighter/thief won't be one of them, having skipped Candlekeep he immediately hit Unsheys ogre twice with arrows then carelessly ran too close to it and was macefaced. I spent 5 minutes rolling, 5 minutes with a screenshot edit, 5 minutes of cutscene, 5 minutes of walking and 5 seconds of combat.
