@ Sapphire

I use the original 6-disc-game (5 BG-brown, 1 Swordcoast-grey) on my PC. Are you playing on a PC ?
Your screen looks quite different from mine; u (all) have much more pixels.

I see u have a quantity-number (here indicating 'eight') at your Wand of Magic Missile, in the inventory-screen below-right. I never can see how many charges I still have, unless I remember how often I use the wand.

Is there a way to get this indicator-number ?

Thanks ! Image IPB

Burr the CE human male berserker + Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Garrick, Yeslick.

Sorcerous Sundries stocks up on our leftovers, then we return to Duke Eltan. Garrick is in the lead and as he spins a yarn covering from here to there with a bit of elsewhere too Imoen decides to play a practical joke on anybody who gets out of bed on the wrong side.

Eventually Eltan can stand no more of Garrick, and banishes us to Candlekeep. We hand a book to the Keeper of the Portal then head into the library. As I try to speak to Koveras Imoen interrupts and says that I am Rrub and she is Neomi. I suppose it is best to keep our true identities to ourselves at this time so add that our other companions are Ariehaj, Dilahk, Kcirrag and Kcilsey. Try saying that backwards!

Tethtoril will be upstairs so we climb the stairs without going elsewhere. The Gatewarden arrests us, allowing Ulraunt to bad-mouth us. Tethtoril is kinder, teleporting us to the secret library where Garrick astounds us by memorising 6 out of 8 spells. A feat not to be repeated.

Imoen is good with traps but as a precaution I hand her rings of fire protection and freedom to go with her boots of grounding. She finds and disables every trap, so our backpacks are getting heavy by the time we reach the next area. Prat and his pals have no answer for us, a pair of phase spiders are batted aside then a hasted blessed barkskinned skeleton takes care of two greater basilisks.

Slythe. Yeslick taunts him, but Garrick slows him and Khalid lands the final arrow. Yeslick gives Krystin a quick update on necromancy. Yeslick uses sanctuary to visit Duke Eltan, then Strength of One and DUHM against Rashad. It doesn't take long as Imoen had laid two snares to give him a head start, although the doppelganger panics and runs for the stairs. Yeslick heads it off and uses a bullet +2 from his sling +1 to kill it. He hoists Eltan up and casts another sanctuary to escape.

With Eltan safe and invitations / evidence from Slythe we can attend the coronation. Do we have a plan? Oh yes. Will it work? Not very well as only one doppelganger transforms and the dispel from Jaheira doesn't affect the others. Worse, the doppelganger attacks as she is casting and badly wounds her before we can kill it.

Eventually the othe doppelgangers break free and transform so another entangle and a slow are cast. Khalid glugs a potion, aware that both Liia and Belt are safely held behind him. Jaheira has used six darts of stunning to no effect, but at least both dukes are still alive. Sarevok gives Yeslick a blow to remember, and teleports away. Belt sends us straight after him but we need a rest.

A lot of people use a mega-mod (either EasyTutu or Baldurs Gate Trilogy) which convert BG1 into the BG2 engine, you can then customise the look which is what SapphireIce101 appears to have done. So long as you have both BG1 and BG2 the mods are freely available here (EasyTutu) and here (BGT)

BG2 added things like the item indicator, not an option in BG1 unfortunately. Also more resolutions to the BG1 640x480. e.g. 800x600 is supported and others such as 1024x768 are available too but have a warning (I use 1024x768 and have never had a problem). If you want another resolution there is a widescreen mod that works for BG2, Tales of the Sword Coast and other Infinity Engine games (but not BG1 without the SwordCoast grey disk you mention), available here.

Most people here use PC's or laptops running Windows. One or two use the Mac version (I think) and I run the PC version on Linux.

If you don't want all that effort you can work out how many wand charges are left by seeing what a store will offer. I don't bother with wands so can't help on the specifics but I believe the price reduces each time a wand is used so you can work out the number of charges remaining over time.

Hi Gate,

I didnt speak to Duke Eltan yet, but the mages up in the Sorcerous Sundries are already dead.
Does the Duke give the order to kill them ? Does this give a problem within the quests I will receive from the Duke ?

@Francoprima - What Gate70 said. I have the gog version of BG1 and 2 because my disk set for BG1 no longer works. I use BGT for Continuity reasons. The mod that changes the Gui like that is called w_gui.

No the mages on the 1st floor of Sorcerous Sundries are optional and not part of any plot/quest. I didn't even go up there this time. All I meant was I sold everything I'd collected to that point.

Burr the CE human male berserker + Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Garrick, Yeslick.

Sigh. Jaheira won't let me continue without my golden pantaloons. My excuse (the fop in the FAI still has them) doesn't wash with her, so off we go. We stop off to buy a few potions and arrows on the way (total cost somewhere around 50-60k gp so A LOT of potions/arrows).

The thieves maze is a doddle until I jump ahead of Imoen to fight a pair of skeleton warriors. She hasn't reached a lightning trap and I take a bit of damage but not enough to stop me killing the warriors (44/65hp left). I've learnt my lesson though and leave her to clear the remaining traps. Winski can wait until later too.

There is was a final group of mercenaries waiting for us. Then Tamoko, who takes a worryingly long time to kill. At this point I should have called it a night instead of making some serious errors.

We change a lot of gear around then enter a forboding temple. We buff with various potions. Error 1 - Imoen and Garrick can't glug potions of invulnerability or heroism, didn't bother to protect them in any other way and that is a stupid thing to do with what I had planned.

A huge battle ensues, but we are in control and almost have Semaj dead. Then he uses a tattoo of power to re-protect himself, cast confusion and teleport. Two of our number are affected and stand/wander aimlessly see error 1. Semaj is our number one target but he re-appears on the snares left by the now hapless Imoen and collapses to the temple floor. Just as we breathe a sigh of relief Garrick drags a battle horror into play and runs off so it can target Imoen instead.

Yeslick is badly wounded by Sarevok and Tazok so starts glugging potions as he rushes to help Jaheira fight the battle horror. Error 2 - both Yeslick and Jaheira had dispel magic and should have used them, or better still Burr and Khalid could have used arrows of dispelling on Imoen and Garrick. Garrick has decided to bring a second battle horror in and then sidles away but not far enough to be safe.

Khalid and I maintain the attention of Sarevok and Tazok, using our bows against Angelo, a battle horror, Tazok and Sarevok depending where we are and who needs help most. Tazok has switched to Imoen so Khalid and I shoot at him but he is too quick and kills her as Sarevok clouts Khalid.

Garrick kills Angelo (entangled, electric bolts) while confused, then recovers and rushes past Yeslick. The chasing battle horror stops with the dwarf, meaning he and Jaheira have one each. Yeslick glugs another blue potion and knuckles down as Khalid drops Tazok and then a battle horror.

We focus on the remaining battle horror, then Sarevok has a surreal piggy in the middle moment as he switches targets repeatedly. We have to run a few times but our missiles are hitting hard and fast, and he finally gives up.

All we have to do is pick up Imoen and get her to a temple. XP varies from 67k to 79k.

Burr, berserker 7. 151 kills, greater basilisk.
Yeslick, fighter 6 / cleric 6. 31 kills, Davaeorn.
Imoen, thief 8. 42 kills, greater doppelganger.
Khalid, fighter 7. 145 kills, Jalantha Mistmyr.
Garrick, bard 7. 40 kills, Angelo.
Jaheira, fighter 6 / druid 7. 60 kills, greater doppelganger.

Great job Gate!

Here's my first entry for my fighter

Skale the Fighter

Ever since she had been raised in Candlekeep, Skale displayed exceptional talents as a fighter. However, inspired by tales of legendary fighters who were called kensai, she herself aspired to become one. Candlekeep had no such adequate schooling for such dangerous profession so she made a promise to herself to keep with the oath that the kensai kept and she would not use weapons or wear armor deemed unacceptable by the mighty kensai. Perhaps one day she too would join their ranks if she followed their rules and trained to be one with her weapons.

Gorion has explained to Skale that the both of them must leave Candlekeep urgently. As they made preparations and left during the dark of night, the two were ambushed by a dark figure in armor alongside ogres. Gorion tells Skale to flee as he deals with the armored figure. Skale never sees Gorion again.

Imoen, Skale’s sister ward meets her in the morning but Skale deftly evades her. Skale makes her way across to Beregost, carefully abiding by the rules she had set forth for herself in Candlekeep. The going is tough for her. An angry drunken fool named Marl greatly angers her in an inn, however Skale is able to maintain her composure and talk him out of a fight. She eventually gets an arsenal of throwing axes and a necklace which gives her great evasive capabilities.
Skale travels across the Sword Coast, looking for clues as to whom murdered Gorion. She battles gibberlings and hobgoblins along the way. She purchases a quarterstaff +1. She slays some ogrillions with throwing axes and equips the ring of protection. Skale participates in an archeological dig, and brings a troubled man to the Nashkel temple. After much gold gathering she purchases necklace of missiles, protection from petrification, and potion of mirroring eyes in preparation for a bit of basilisk hunting.

She gets ambushed by a basilisk, but she immediately drinks a potion of mirroring eyes. Skale then prepares the scroll of protection and begins to hunt basilisk. The going is well, as Skale equips a quarterstaff+1. She also discovers that her throwing axes also harm basilisk. She is able to recruit the local ghoul and this ghoul kills the basilisk trainer Mutamin. The greater basilisk near him drops a Laerel Necklace, worth 3k gold! The ghoul is slain by a lesser basilisk and Skale decides it is high time to take a hike out of this area.

Skale traveled north as she heard of a legendary amulet that she wished to acquire. Unfortunately the said amulet was more then she bargained for, and being a thousand gold short doesn’t cut it in the Sword Coast. She had wasted charges from both the wand of sleep and defense amulet just to get to Ulgoth’s Beard. She had encountered a vicious bandit attack in which one bandit scored a critical, lobbing off half of her health. She also met with another bandit attack on the way back down, thankfully no one scored a critical during this meeting. She went all the way south to the Nashkel Mines, saved a man named Prism from the bounty hunter Greywolf. Using throwing axes and the terrain to her advantage, Skale manages to best Greywolf in a duel. After selling emeralds, she had acquired enough gold to obtain the amulet.

A cleric named Bassilus seemed to be the cause of trouble in and around the Beregost area. She found the crazed cleric soon enough, and buffed from the shield amulet, and greenstone amulet. She allowed Bassilus to cast spells at her, all negated by the greenstone amulet, then Bassilus decided to engage in melee combat. His anger did not cause his fellow minions to disperse, however they did not seem all too eager to catch sight of Skale either. Skale decided to move away from the dangerous looking minions and lead Bassilus just south of the area. With the skeletons out of her sight, Skale promptly fought Bassilus with varscona at hand. Both seemed capable of fighting each other, but Skale proved to have the edge in this battle. She had taken some damage and promptly used her bhaalspawn ability to heal herself. Bassilus fell shortly after.

Used Wand of Monster Summoning to keeo Aec'Letec at bay until his servents was dead. Then it was a simple matter of hack'n slash. Chop, chop, chop and the demon was gone.

Killed Serevok.

I simply ran up, ran down with Serevok in my heels, but no one followed. Then I beat him up with my stick. Tazok came to his rescue, but was too late.

I don't think I'll continue the no-reload challenge into bg2. I know BG1 very, very well, but I've hardly even gone through 50% of BG SoA.

I wish you all the best luck in your own challenges.

I incidently forgot to post her statistics but she will be pure...

Right now she is a fighter because vanilla BG1 doen't allow kits, however she is playing with kensai restrictions in mind as to keep it as real as possible. I have chosen not to install any mods. We'll see how far I can get.

Just had another quick attempt with my kensai. He got to level 6, even though I was taking risks with him, but ran out of luck when held by Lindin's party in the basilisk area. Shame as he had exceptionally good HPs this time (74). I'll start him again, but this time aim for a risk-free run.

And another failure.  Again at level 6 (though average HPs this time).  Up to then I had been careful and Geisho had never been more than scratched.  He had reputation 20 and I thought I would collect cash for Bassilus to give enough to clean Ulgoth's Beard out of goodies.  Unfortunately I mistook a rigid thinking for hold person and failed the saving throw.

That seemed likely to be that, but he ran the right way and just managed to survive until he regained his senses.  He took a healing potion and ran for it.  I was just thinking he would make a great escape when the last skeleton in range hit him with a critical.  With 15 HPs the odds were 83% that he would survive that - but he'd used up all his ration of luck for that encounterImage IPB.

A third attempt today with Geisho the kensai.  I actually rerolled this one, although it's very similar to the previous version.  One nice touch is that with total of 91 in stats it provides him with an opportunity to get at least 19 in all statistics in BG2 (makes no difference to gameplay, but feels satisfying to me for someone aspiring to godhood).

Approach much the same as last time, i.e. intending to take minimal risks.  Successful so far in that he's never had to save against a spell and never had more than moderate damage.

He is now at level 7 and has just spent his accumulated funds at Ulgoth's Beard.  This time he got the last bit of money required for the ring of invisibility by taking on the ankheg nest rather than Bassilus.  A kensai finds the ankhegs there simple unless he's really unlucky - by going straight into melee Geisho was hitting with a 2 while the ankhegs needed a 20 due to the penalty for using missile weapons in melee.  The high damage output from kensai meant none of the ankhegs had time to switch to melee attack and Geisho was never hit (he had protection from acid on anyway).

Here's his character record - he's about to enter the Nashkel mines and should make rapid progress from there.

I've been having the same problems with my Cavaliers. Tried Aasimar, Tiefling, Halfling, Drow and Gnome and now back to Aasimar. Left the Frabjous re-roller running whilst I went to a meeting. Scary stats Wise - look after that one!

Geisho has completed his adventures in BG1:
- Mulahey was left on his own by a fireball and lasted only seconds more.
- Nimbul and Tranzig both went down quickly.
- at the bandit camp a potion of firebreath did most of the damage, though Venkt survived long enough to get an acid arrow off before succumbing to a critical.
- at the mine Drasus was pulled away and quickly crushed.  I think Geisho did have a potion of absorption, but didn't use it (his belt providing enough protection).  The rest of the party were left alone as Geisho went invisibly down to Daveorn.  After resting he pulled the battle horrors away (going invisible again) and a potion of magic blocking lasted long enough to get through Daveorn's most dangerous spells (like this lightning bolt through a wall - if only my characters could do that) before finishing him off.
- collected available tomes, including those from outside the city.  Most of that was done invisibly, though one flesh golem had to be taught not to interfere.  Normally I allow Ramazith to survive and return to the top of his tower - but not this time.  Started the poison quest to get the tome from the cleric without killing him, but didn't bother finishing it (as the game will finish before the poison does its work).
- investigated the Iron Throne invisibly and was sent to Candlekeep.  After looting the tomes Geisho took on Prat.  I realised belatedly at this point that I had forgotten to put on the ring of free action (againImage IPB).  Checking back Geisho's protection against missiles had saved him as Bor had missed with shots of 18 and 14.  Bor himself made a satisfying shower of chunks.  A potion of invisibility took Geisho past the basilisks.
- Slythe faced a potioned up challenger and had no chance.  Geisho quickly ran to the palace and pulled 5 dopplegangers down to the cellar to finish them (though one ran back up when scared), before the last found itself rather outnumbered!
- Geisho rested (to get last Bhaal power) before buffing up again to go through the maze.  Skirted the Undercity party to get into the temple.  There he retreated from his assault on Angelo with the latter at near death (seems to be a standard performance for my kensais), but Angelo followed too closely and another blow finished him.  Semaj was no threat, but just for fun Geisho watched him fireball Sarevok and then disappeared (leaving Semaj to Sarevok's tender mercies).  Tazok was out of Sarevok's sight at that point so Geisho reappeared to give him a lesson in damage dealing.  Even with potions Geisho was no match for Sarevok, but running round using his throwing axe gave the latter no chance.  I had intended to go back to melee to finish him off, but he caught me off guard with his surrender.

I just need to have Geisho pick up the pantaloons and then he will be off to Athkatla.

{Edit: on starting BG2 the poison was still active.  I thought I had done the transition like that before with BGT, but I may be mis-remembering - or it may be that one of the mods I used to play with changes this behaviour.  Anyway, I'll give him a chance in BG2 even though that will no longer be as part of a trilogy run}

{Edit2: didn't really feel good about continuing.  That probably contributed to my failure to recognise the radiant mephit in the portal room had come right up to the other end.  Without Horn of Kazgoroth protection up Geisho was a sitting duck for colour spray and never recovered consciousness}

Welcome (& good luck) Mechlin.

Bogwad the LN Male gnome cleric/illusionist

Imoen is pointing out the obvious - Tarnesh does indeed look dangerous without Gorion to protect us. I think back to what Gorion taught, realising the Shield spell which protected me from Carbos, Shank and 5 rats will once again be a sensible precaution.

Imoen doesn't waver as Tarnesh tries to scare us, safely protected by my protection from fear spell. She aims at the many images, trying to hit the doomed one as I successfully blind our attacker. I'm out of spells so move in with my war hammer as three sets of magic missiles hit my shield buff. I hammer the images away, leaving Imoen to shoot the hapless mage to the ground.

We step inside, wondering if we should introduce ourselves to Khalid and Jaheira.
Edit...some time later.

Imoen and I are safer now, with Khalid in front and Jaheira behind. Even the golden pantaloons are guarded against weasels Image IPB albeit at the risk of some ferret legging.

We are chased through High Hedge by a sextet of skeletons with long swords until I turn them away from us. Imoen congratulates me for quick thinking as Khalid asks Jaheira how long until laundry day.

Algernon fails to spot a shadowy ferret pickpocket, and Khalid proves himself against a pair of ogrillions (asleep naturally) before we head south to Nashkel.

Quote of the day
Khalid : If at first I don't succeed - the wife won't let me forget

Two winter wolves, a mountain bear, an ogre mage, three gnolls, two ghouls and four xvarts have chased us to Brage, fortunately he knew a safer route back to Nashkel. From there we pick off a slow ogre, help a dryad save her tree from Caldo and Krumm, return a drowned cat, kill a blinded winter wolf and clear Gnarl/Hairtooth from a wooden bridge.

Khalid, fighter 1. 4 kills, ogre. ** long sword, * long bow, * two weapon style.
Bogwad, cleric 1/illusionist 1. 12 kills, ogrillion. * war hammer, * sling.
Imoen, thief 2. 14 kills, winter wolf. * short sword, short bow.
Jaheira, fighter 2/druid 2. 8 kills, ogrillion. ** dagger, ** dart.

Thank you, Gate70!
This is not going to be a speed run as I intend to visit all areas and do most quests in TotSC. Actually the trap tweaks were installed with Durlag's Tower in mind :?

But first things first, and after leaving Candlekeep my 5-hp aspiring sorceress decided to change her plans and head to Beregost instead of the Friendly Arm Inn (carefully avoiding all kobolds, wolves, and suspicious-looking squirrels on her way). She charmed Mr. Algernon with a very nice pink sparkle display and got rewarded with a cloak of matching colours. I'm going to abuse this cloak until Sarasti learns Spider Spawn, also called The Amazing Jumping Spider Circus.

Helping a local guard clear a house full of spiders turned out to be less spectacular. Poor guy got killed and Sarasti had to spend five minutes running around the table and throwing stuff at the last remaining spider. She's still level 1.

After a while Sarasti tried to show her pink sparkle display to a lady called Silke. Silke wasn't impressed, so Sarasti had to call some guards. Luckily they were more convincing. A visit to the Beregost Temple left her with +8000 exp (2000 from each charmed sirine), level 4, some shinies and a new Knock spell which was immediately put to good use. Making friends with the local government didn't hurt either.

The following few days turned out to be rather boring. Lots of running in circles, running from dread wolves, running out of spells. Tarnesh, another would-be evil wizard, was hit with Spook and tried to run away as well. Too bad Sarasti still had 11 Magic Missiles left (with the help of the Ring of Wizardry). A short trip to Nashkel and Nashkel Carnival was unmemorable as well except for a lovely scene seen near the local inn. Apparently a mage called Edwin (in red) was having a rendezvous with a girl called Neira (in pink). This sight left Sarasti with level 5 and a Cure Light Wounds spell. Both Edwin and Minsc were charmed just for fun.

The next trip will be to the Sword Coast. I heard there was a pirate treasure cave somewhere among the cliffs.

Further adventures of Geisho.

After his last failure I would probably have left it for a while, but I was a bit annoyed about the manner of his demise and decided to have another go and he's just finished a rapid run through BG1.

Same tactics as last time.  He was never in danger of death from a maximum HP critical and never had to save against a spell.  The only significant error I was aware of was not resting while invisible inside the Cloakwood mine before flooding it.  That meant he had no invisibility to get past the party (minus Drasus) outside and if guards had continuously spawned when he tried to rest things could have got nasty - but his rest was uninterrupted.

In the final battle Geisho this time managed to disrupt Angelo's initial spell and finish him off quickly.  After dealing with the others he again ran Sarevok round using his axe for a while, but this time I switched to melee much earlier.  In fact rather too early as Sarevok survived over 100 HP of damage in the final assault.  Geisho had just started running away to heal up a bit, when Sarevok belatedly realised his wounds were terminal.

Here's his final character record.

{Edit: and this time he actually gets through the dungeon!}
