First update for Ivy, elven Wild Mage.
As you could see in the last post, Ivy has no HP-bonus from CON. None of my five rolls produced any. At least she's reasonably strong, agile and smart. Her weapon profiency is with Darts.
Starting spell picks:
Nahal's Reckless Dweomer (mandatory)
Shield
Sleep
Find Familiar (I need the bonus HP badly - can't give Shenk and Carbos a chance to kill me on a
regular hit!)
Larloch's Minor Drain (more bonus HP potential)
Blindness
Charm Person
Identify
I hit Winthrop for some darts and a night's sleep. Gotta get that familiar right away...
Actually, I had no idea what kind of familiar I'd get and didn't plan for any. Ivy is Chaotic Neutral simply because I pictured her that way.
Oh, a cat. What can it do? (picks it up to have a look at its description). Ah, it's a master scout, with minor other thief abilities. Conflicting info between inventory description and spell descritption. I suspect spell decription is mostly wrong since it's the same as for the spell in SoA. Tutu familiars are toned down compared to SoA. It certainly has only 12 HP because Ivy's went from 4 to 10. So I suspect AC is 0 rather than -4, then. Magic resist is also probably the lower number. Still, pretty good for the early game. I poked around the net for some more info. Looks like the cat has
3 attacks per round, and the hits do 1d6 damage. That's way better than what Ivy can come up with.
"Okay Kitty, time to make yourself useful!
Ah, nice one. Good, now block him there so I can...
ah, perfect damage roll."
This is probably the worst robbing success I've ever had in Candlekeep. Couldn't crack open containers to save my life (16 STR isn't bad for an elven mageling, but very meager for bashing, it seems). At least
Kitty could open two containers. I love that XP feature in Tutu. Nothing overpowered but helps in the long run and it's encouraging while you play.
Scraped together enough gold to buy 360 arrows, a Long Sword and a Studded Leather for Imoen.
I must say I enjoyed Candlekeep a lot. I spent a good two hours here, I think, really drinking in the scenery and smelled the roses. (
That's how long ago I played, hehe) Especially the 'Linda and Sir Trun' quest from one of the mods is very well written.
Picked up Monty and Xzar, and used some
cheesy metagame knowledge here. (Got quite lucky, too! That bugger means major danger with my mod setup. He knows Mirror Image, Horror and Sleep).
Dropped off Monty and X here. I'll bring them along to Nashkel later so they won't disappear. You never know who you might eventually need in a no-reloads game...
I decided to make Khalid an archer. Gave him *** in Long Bow (hey, if Coran can have it, so can he). I think archery matches his personalty better than melee does.
Here you can see me being willing to spend 90% of my gold on an expensive weapon. Can see my mistake?
Oh crap, this is BG2 rules, where Composite Long Bows require
great strength. Khalid isn't strong enough! And a regular Long Bow isn't exactly cheap either. I sold all seven 1st level scrolls I had kept (some were quite useful ones (Magic Missile, etc.) to be able to afford a Long Bow as well. Now I am looking for a really stong archer, I suppose. Minsc, Kivan and Shar-Teel are the only ones I can think of (barring ogre power gauntlets). Anyone else out there?
My merry band of four went to hunt the belt fetish ogre, and do some
wolf hunting along the way. While we fought the ogre (we'd gotten it to more than half dead) we happened to wake up a xvart pack. A well-timed and -placed Entangle from Jaheira kept them busy until we were done with the ogre.
One of the xvarts dropped a scroll of Non-Detection. Wow, a 3rd level scroll from a measly random xvart! I though only higher-level foes (e.g. ogre mage and such) could drop those.
My mod setup:
- Tutu (full BG2 implementation of priest magic, some BG2-specific arcane scrolls added. Enemy mages can use BG2 spells). Basic ammo is sold in packs of 120
- BG1 NPC project (I get to choose proficiencies on NPCs but they all start in their regular areas). Cloakwood 1-4 can be accessed at any time, so the three NPCs there can be recruited earlier than in vanilla.
- BG1 Unfinished Business + Jastey's quest pack + Lure of the Sirine's Call
- SCS (but no improved spiders, and no improved Davaeorn battle or final battle. End-of-chapter battles in chapters 2,3,5 and 6 are made harder. For one thing, there are two backstabbing thieves added to the Iron Throne HQ battle!)
Greater Doppelgangers (except the ones in the Coronation fight,
I think) are VERY dangerous. They use Horror and Dire Charm, their hits carry 'save or get confused' and they can buff with Haste + Mirror Image several times. Priests and mages pre-buff (once they spot us, a portion of their memorized spells are used for buffs). Enemies can use potions (and fighter-types usually carry battle potions). All potions they don't use up can be found by us post-battle. Enemies can detect our spell buffs, but not effects from items we wear.
Targeting by intelligent enemies is 'smarter'. So my mage Ivy needs to buff up or stay out of sight from archers and spellcasters!
Better Calls for Help makes areas like Bandit Camp very dangerous, as everyone can move to a battle form large distances.
During Chapter III, the two assassin gangs of Lamalha et al. and Molkar et al. will seek us out and attack when we arrive at a random map.
Bears are not slow.
- Hard Times (very small resources early on, many things are more expensive than usual, many items removed, non-magical metal armor have a chance to break (yes, even full plate!), Algernon's Cloak has only 3 charges, etc, etc.)
- Item Randomizer (many items get shuffled around, so I can practically not count on anything I am used to finding to be in that spot. Nothing that isn't removed by Hard Times should be lost in the game, though.)
My house rules:
- If an NPC dies and gets resurrected, they will receive a -1 CON penalty (as per vanilla BG1 rules).
- Imoen is always in my parties, she usually dual-classes at Thief level 9 (for better thiefiness and backstabbing prowess). If she survives, I use SK in BG2 to make her exactly like she ended BG1 (including her spellbook). If she dies an unrecoverable death in BG1 but my PC makes it through, I treat Imoen pretty much like she does not exist in BG2.
