Hal (2: BGT & Oversight)
I cough up for a cloak of displacement and a greenstone amulet, then return a dagger to miner Kylee and stun Mulahey twice. He's injured and moves away so I hide and aim my sling. 21 shadowy bullets later he is dead. I have emptied a chest and right-looted his corpse without his 12 minions noticing.
Nimbul resists a stunning blow and casts mirror image so I hide around a corner until his protection expires. A second hit sends him berserk but he still casts horror as I am rounding a corner and hiding again. I aim for a distant spot in case the spell takes effect, but it fails and I return to finish him.
Tranzig is much harder work, consuming two healing spells and half a dozen potions as I try to hit repeatedly from the shadows. Eventually he perishes (Monk: 5, 33>36hp).

Yes, best of luck for Abigail. Cleric PCs so far seem to rarely make it to Melissan...maybe it's about time that trend got changed.
Thanks Corey. With a F/C, R/C, C/T, or even Priest of Lathander I'd like her chances much, much better. I'm not expecting this to be a lengthy run.
@Serg. Thanks. I'm enjoying her run so far, but I am worried about her girl. The Duchal Palace is going to be a big, big hurdle for her and after that I can see trouble upon trouble.
I'm contemplating giving her a new life as a F/C.

Abigail is currently camping in Peldvale contemplating her next move.

I'll note that resource management is going to be a challenge going forward due to the SCS Spider upgrades combined with her lack of item based Free Action (I won't let her mug Dushai). Can anyone spare 20,000 gold?

Ivy has just spent about 20k on arrows and spells at Sorcerous Sundries but is soon going to have more than that again (Coran is robbing the whole city...). But I think he's worthy of a Shadow Armor soon, so there goes that money.
I have skipped the spider upgrade - it sounds too scary for me. Giant Spiders are quite frequent even in areas that are often visited by low-level parties (maybe that needs to change if you install this?) I can safely say that Ivy's expedition to recruit Faldorn early would have had practically no chance of success with Web-throwing spiders involved. It was hard enough without them.

I like the Improved Spider component: it makes the Cloakwood foreboding as it should be.
I've run a bunch of solo characters through this install and haven't lost any to the Spiders so far. Some have cleared them, some have slipped past. The Giant Spider ambushes can, however, cause problems for characters without plentiful access to Free Action or Invisibility.
Abigail can't use Spider's Bane and I won't let her mug Dushai. She also can't cast Invisibility of course (the casting time on Sanctuary is too long, the duration too short for that to work). That leaves her relying on Free Action potions or item based Invisibility. There are barely enough Free Action potions for that to work. And Abigail already lacks the Potions of Invisibility she would need to go that route.
There is a ring for sale in Ulgoth's Beard that could solve her problem. That's why she needs 20K gold.
We'll see how it goes.

A.
Btw. Overall, I find the impact of SCS on difficulty most notceably in the Undercellar-Duchal Palace sequence. Some characters can run into difficulty earlier though. Abigail is among them.

I remember Slythe and Krystin put a respectable fight against my powerful beyond-XP-cap party the one time I have faced them, so yeah, they are indeed tough. Duchal Palace I remember as a pushover but that may mave been because of luck, good tactics or just a powerful party.
For me, the things that SCS impatcs the most are:
- Bandit Camp (I used to fight them with a level ~3 party. Now I delay going there for a very long time)
- The two assassin confrontations that turn into ambushes
- Chess battle in DT
- Cultist fights in Ulgoth's Beard
- Yeah, and fights with mages in general, especially early on. I do not remeber getting Sleep spells thrown at me in vanilla BG...

(Again, I used the 'best of 5 stat rolls without redistributing stats' method)
Mods:
Tutu
SCS (everything except improved spiders and improved doppelgangers (it's not that I can't deal with the improved doppelgangers but this component detroys their hilarious battle cries. All that remains is their 'overacting' death cry. I want "Your time is done, primates!" back.)
Quest Pack, NPC Project, UB, Sirine's Call
Hard Times
Item Randomizer
Choosing this character is partly a protest against what SixOfSpades has written about the kit in his excellent non-spolier BG guide 'Volothamp's Comeuppance'. An amazing guide - I wish I had read that before I first played either of the games.
He gives the Beast Master a fun rating of 1.4 out of 10 and other than Wizard Slayer, it's the only class he specifically advices new players to not pick.
I have no idea why he is so hard on the Beast Master. If you play them mainly as scout/archer, the drawbacks are, imo, not that troublesome. You can still use bows/crossbows/darts/sling, and you do not want anything heavier than leather armors anyway if you want to scout. The advantages are all cool, especially in BG1. And in the late game (ToB), AC matters little and there are plenty of cool armors and weapons you can use even with the Beast Master restrictions. And you get warrior HLAs.
Eileth and Imoen could easily enter FAI (just wait until both of them succeeded hiding and then sneak in). Getting out (with Jaheira and Khalid) seemed like a bad idea. I had Jaheira use Remove Fear, then I removed them from the party to take care of Tarnesh first.
I thought Tarnesh wouldn't bother us if neither of us could be seen (and talked to) but that was wrong. He attacked Eileth's Pseudo Dragon familiar with a Sleep. Imoen fell down but Eileth saved. Imoen took one staff whack and nearly died, the familiar got showered in Magic Missiles. OK, this is bad. It's do or die for Eileth now. What kind of hero are you if you let your companions just die?

Ah, that's more like it!
Took K and J to Beregost, dropped them off, did some small quests, killed Karlat and spiders, helped ourselves to some valuables, picked up K and J again and we are about to leave for Nashkel now. Eileth is level 2. She rolled a 6 on the d10 for hit points, so she has 26 now. Imoen is level 3 and has had some decent HP rolls: she's at 20 now.

If you are solo and have Improved Dopplegangers installed, it can be nerve wracking. That said, I've solo no reloaded it with about a dozen characters now and some of them have been pretty gimpy so I suppose it isn't that bad ultimately.
I do expect it to be a major problem for Abigail though.

Since Abigail is about ready to leave for the Cloakwood Mines, now seems like a good time to start posting on her adventures. I'll do it in 3 part.
Heeding Gorion's advice Abigail headed for the Friendly Arm Inn following Sarevok's ambush. She exercised the better part of valor when she saw a suspicious character loitering in front of the inn.

Her first battle was with the belt fetish Ogre. Hooray for slings.

Some additional minor questing got her to Level 3.

After arriving in Nashkel, Abigail took on some more minor quests. Greywolf fell gently to Doom->Hold Person->Flame Blade.

Revenant, on the other hand, took the Sling.

Now with sufficient coin to do some shopping (I didn't allow Abigail early access to the hidden items), she headed north to the fabled Ulgoth's Beard. Lacking standard Ankeg fighting tools (Boots of Avoidance, Cloak of Displacement, Protection from Acid, Martial Staff, Potion of Absoption, Wand of Sleep amongst others) Abigail let her new found bony friends tangle with them while she hid out in her Sanctuary. Only a couple were dropped this way: Skeletons are less than ideal Ankeg fighters.

The Skellies did better against the Basilisks.

At Level 6 and with Greenstone+Potion of Freedom in tow, Abigail was ready to take down Mulahey.

Her entourage opened the door.

A Necklace of Missles blast wiped out Mulahey's followers, while Doom->Hold Person->Flame Blade finished him.

His partner in crime took Skellies->Doom->Hold Person->Sling.

I'll post on the Bandit Camp followed by Bassilus soon.
Best,
A.

The Bandit Camp was trickier for Abigail than it has been for my other characters. She prevailed, but it cost her some key resources.
The battle with Teven and his pals went fine. Glyphs took down the fodder, the Wand of Heavens, Teven. Abigil could have saved the charge, but she was fishing for a Potion of Extra Healing.

Then the camp.
Abigail chose to stealth into the tent. Unfortunately, since red enemies follow Santuaried creatures in my install, she had to burn a Potion of Invisibility.
The tent battle began poorly when Abigail failed a save against Slow and was boxed in. A Potion of Invisibility gave Abigail time to heal and buff.
Ender' proximity complicated the breakout but she fought her way through. Venkt fell soon after.

Once her foes moved away from Ender, Abigail put her Glyphs to use.

Her Flame Blade finished the fight.

A.

While the Bandit Camp crew put up a good fight, Bassilus was Abigail's most interesting foe to date.
Abigail opened the fight with a crew of Skeleton's to rival Bassilus'. The Skellies basically cancelled each other out. Bassilus' Potions of Extra Healing, also cancelled out Abigail's Wand of Heavens charges. Free Actions on both sides took Hold Person out of the picture.
Casting Animal Summoning -and getting an SCS Bear- pushed the summon balance in Bassilus' favor. Now back to full health, he looked to press the advantage.

Abigail Santuaried and re-grouped before her last summon fell.

From her Sanctuary, Abigail saw Bassilus' animal pals vanish, she then buffed up seeking a one on one hammerfest.

Bassilus had other ideas: choosing 20 one 1 to 1 on 1. Abigail prevailed.

But what of all those Skeletons?
Nothing to see here folk, move along...Soon the rest of the mob cleared and Abigail was free to go.

Abigail will head into the Cloakwood soon.
Best,
A.

Hal had just arrived in his last session at Baldur's Gate and has now got to the temple to confront Sarevok, although he's a bit lucky to have made it there.
The first objective in the city was to tool up with tomes. Ramazith supplied an intelligence tome and Jalantha helped with a wisdom tome. Hal's grubby mits found the dexterity tome without help. Just in case he spent too long sleeping he finished off the poison quest - Marek's confession gave him his last level, but he managed to get a mirror image up just before being stunned, which meant Hal had to go up and down stairs a couple of times before landing a killing blow. While thinking about tomes he popped over to Durlag's Tower to get the tome there. He also paid a visit to High Hedge to get the Horn and Claw of Kazgoroth.
Fully equipped he investigated the Iron Throne using stealth and got sent to Candlekeep. He got the tomes there using storm giant strength potion and scroll of magic protection and sneaked away back to the city. He took a number of potions to confront Slythe and had no trouble there - his second attack stunning his victim.
Still with buffs up he moved on to the palace. The intention there was to try and get as many of the greater dopplegangers as possible to concentrate on him. In that he was extremely successful, with 5 of the 6 going for him. However, I woke up just too late to the fact that Duke Belt was about to close the circle and Hal found himself trapped. He finally managed to kill one of them at the same time as he received a critical that took his HPs down to single figures. Once able to move he ran round the room taking pot shots with some darts of stunning. 15 darts later he had stunned his third and the last of those chasing - the guards and Duke Belt having dealt with the other 2 without assistance in retaliation for Liia's death.
He added some potions of perception to try and improve his stealth, although those appear not to give cumulative benefits to hide in shadows. Also took potions of absorption and fire resistance to get 100% protection. Then used convenient corners to deal with the maze occupants before stealthing through the Undercity party to get to the temple.

Abigail is proud to have dealt a grievous blow to the Iron Throne and is now celebrating at the Elfsong.
With a mission to complete -and with a tight resource budget- Abigail raced through the Cloakwood. She was ambushed by Giant Spiders once, but a Potion of Freedom solved that problem.

Abigail chose to minimize conflict in the mines. A Detect Invisibility from Rezdan meant two invisibility charges had to be used.

Fortunately, that second charge lasted Abigail all the way to Davaeorn.

Running elemental buffs, Free Action, Greenstone, Shield, and later Remove Fear, Abigail was safe from Davaeorn's magics. She found dealing with the Battle Horrors tricky however, due to her slow, range 1 weapon and poor THAC0. This one was finished fairly quickly under Holy Power+Oil of Speed but it was Davaeorn's Cone of Cold which did most the damage.

Ultimaltey, Abigail chose to ignore the second Horror and focus her attention of Davaeorn. Doom->Hold Person-Ashideena took him down. Potions of Healing were quaffed regularly to offset damage from the Horror.

Abigail will return to Candlekeep soon. Then comes the tricky part...
Best,
A.

I do intend to return to a more modded version soon - perhaps if our current run (8th attempt) can finally make it past Irenicus (which is my minimum target for multiplayer). I was thinking of waiting for BGEE to see how that played (first unmodded then modded), but don't know if I'll wait as long as the end of November for the revised release date.

I decided not to give a sucker (Sarevok) an even break. Hal approached under stealth, just using scroll of magic protection in case his plan went wrong. From range he had a shot at Sarevok and waited a split second for him to notice and attack before retreating and restealthing. That meant Sarevok came forward a few steps before making his speech and turning hostile. In turn that meant Hal could attack from range again and have only Sarevok respond.
With Sarevok in position Hal put on his potion buffs (perception, power, invulnerability, giant strength, mind focusing) and started the fiddly business of attacking and hiding again round the pillar. Using double taps on the space bar Hal was able to move far enough round the pillar to hide before Sarevok caught up with him. Even with all the potion benefits Hal was still only successful about 60% of the time with his stealth attempts and had regular runs across the room (not toward the dais) and back to the pillar for another attempt. After a dozen or so successful stealth attacks Sarevok had had enough.
Hal fitted in a quick trip to the Friendly Arm to pick up more stylish attire for his onward journeys and has just arrived back at the palace to report in to Duke Belt. I expect that Belt will send Hal on to Amn shortly.
I was aiming roughly to get Hal to the normal BG1 cap of 161,000 and just marginally overshot.

Understood. I was just wondering whether you had gotten through the Improved Doppes without leaving or dispelling. I'm pretty worried about Abigail. Aside from Alastria who used a Telefield, my characters have basically been going Dispel(Arrow or Spell)->Dart of Stunning. Abigail can't of course. If you have any thoughts on how Abigail can win that fight, PM me.

Abigail has made a friend.

And in case you are wondering: Yes. The womanizing Coran's little animal call whistle is vaguely creepy when he is duoing with a female dwarf priest who spends much of her time polymorphed into a wolf...

Their first mission together was to the Wyvern cave. Abigail, with her Save v. Death of 1, tanked running Holy Power->Draw on Holy MIght->Flame Blade while Coran let arrows fly.

By the end Abigail had taken a beating. She chose to kite the last Wyvern.

Abigail and Coran will head to Candlekeep soon.
