Petty has completed BG1 (2 hours 45 mins playing time).  No major errors and he was never in danger personally, though I'm not sure how much life Belt had left at the palace.  A summary of his progress with a few screenshots is as follows:

Shoal +26 HPs
Beregost tasks +9 HPs
Friendly Arm (got ogre belt on way)
Nashkel (ankheg armour + green scroll protection petrification)
Basilisks area +10, +11 HPs (used potion of clarity to finish off party safely after rage expired)
Beregost (battleaxe +1)
Melicamp (successfully revived)
Lighthouse area (couple of rages for Sil & 5 sirines; after rest potion of absorption allowed a single rage to deal with golems). +14 HPs
Brage (identified tome to get +7 HPs)
Caldo & Krumm
Greywolf
Mines (used potion of invisibility to not have to bother with kobolds).  Mulahey was raged after his support burned.
Nimbul
Tranzig
Bandit camp (armour upgrade).  Potion of firebreath did most damage in the tent.
Ankheg nest
Helped Tenya
Ulgoth's Beard  to get cloak displacement / ring invisibility / green amulet (never used) / ring free action
Drasus raged then went invisible to go through mine (time wasted killing guards when twice failed to rest after talking to Rill)
Dragged battle horrors away and used potion magic blocking to tank Daveorn
Durlag's Tower tome.  City tomes (+10 HPs to end BG1 with 101).  Helm Balduran, axe +2, shield of falling stars, eagle bow (never used).
Candlekeep - tomes, throwing axe (never used).
Slythe (left Krystin in gratitude for getting Cloak of Balduran for me)
Palace fight just tanked - Liia died and Belt took a number of hits and I was relieved to see the last doppleganger attacking him fall.
Invisible through maze with fire / lightning protection.
Potion of explosions attracted Sarevok with scroll magic protection up just in case.
Went invisible and rebuffed for Sarevok.  Initially attacked dual wielding, but had the worst of it and retired to heal before returning with shield equipped to finish him off.

This is Petty's final BG1 record - he had 162 kills.

That's freaking amazing - I am not not past Beregost after 2h 45 min.

I'm rarely even up to Beregost at that point...I usually head north first to do Tenya, the zombie farm, FAI, and some ankhegs if I'm feeling saucy.

Numerous failed attempts that I haven't bothered to post.  The latest, though, has been interesting enough that I thought I would make a post.

Tal (the sixth?  the seventh? the twenty-ninth?  I can't remember any more), M E Sorc

Tal's progress was fairly standard for me at the beginning: Imoen, Ajantis, FAI, Kivan, head down to Nashkel.

The fun was at Nashkel: Ajantis failed his save against Rigid Thinking when fighting.  We dispatched her without greater difficulty...

...and then the fun began.  Ajantis promptly killed the Innkeeper and a patron, causing a reputation plunge to 3.  Once he recovered, we quickly went outside, where we were engaged by bounty hunters and the Nashkel guard.  Fleeing the town, it took us a great deal of time before were able to raise our replutation to a passable 6 and returned to town.

The problem was, the guards and bounty hunters (at least the BHs that hadn't talked to us), were still there, and still hostile to the party.  So, we continued avoiding Nashkel whenever possible until we had finished the mine and acquired a certain cloak.  After that, we returned to Nashkel (where I stupidly forgot about NIMBUL, who killed Ajantis), and then I lured the angry townspeople into the Inn and then charmed them and parked them in the back rooms.

Even so, the reputation hit and the temple extortion to restore it to a poor level kept me in the poor house for quite some time.

The strangest part is that Ajantis has spent pretty much the entire game complaining about our less-than-stellar reputation... something that he caused.  I'll never look at that Paladin in the same way again.

A similar thing just happened to me at Beregost. Silke confused a Morninglord Guard that I had previously charmed to fight her. My character was invisible so was not attacked. However that guard killed a passerby and a whole area of the town went hostile. Fortunately had Algernon's Cloak and charmed the townspeople, but didn't have the sense to park them somewhere sensible like you did. Returned later and they were hostile again and so had to charm them again. Had to qualms about excessive use of the cloak. I usually limit myself to one use per day. Not upon that occasion!

Eileth, elven Beast Master, second update

Eileth and Imoen left Khalid and Jaheira in Beregost and returned to FAI to cash in on Landrin's and Unshey's quests (received half a dozen antidotes from Landrin since Imoen's CHA is really high with Algernon's cloak), and also to rob the place a bit more now that Imoen is better at lock picking. That didn't go so well for Imoen. On the top floor, she got caught stealing (her stealth is poor) and found herself in a fight against two FFs. Landrin turned hostile. She is apparently some sort of Mage. Imoen ran down the stairs to avoid a Sleep spell...

The Flaming Fist guys followed and Imoen got cornered against the staircase. She had to drink her inviso potion to save herself. Eileth got up there (in shadows at first, but then revealed her presence with some distance to the guards) and could lure the guards away to free Imoen. After some work with running and trying to hide around corners, we could both safely go down to the bottom floor and rest to get rid of the guards. Imoen stole stuff from only two chests on the second floor so she could safely avoid the one guard duo that spawned. There are still some unlocked but unlooted chests (and a few locked as well) on both floors. We'll be back when Imoen is a better sneak.

I have changed plans regarding my future party. Edwin is still on, but I will skip Faldorn. I have seen what her high-level spells can do in my run with Ivy (Wild Mage that moved over to the minimal reloads thread after her first death) and they dominate the gameplay considerably. Plus, I have started another no-reloads run where my main character is a Totemic Druid. Now I want to explore the Cleric side of things so I have recruited Viconia instead. She will be my main tank for most of the journey. During Imoen's dual period, I plan to have Shar-Teel as thief (probably dualled at level 7). Eileth thinks that she and the spunky Imoen can have a good influence on these three allegedly 'evil' people. We'll see how that goes.

The journey to Nashkel was quite easy, with some good XP earned along the way thanks to a Ghast pack. Imoen found some nice boots and we took some plate mails from some overzealous Flaming Fist guys (too bad Viconia isn't strong enough for plate mail. The ogre power gauntlets is very high on our wish list. I hope the Randomizer puts them somewhere we can find them reasonably early).

Neira was owned. I have three decent archers in the party and her first spell attempt got disrupted by arrows and her second by a Command from Viconia. Neira didn't survive the round she was unconscious.

I will leave off Khalid and Jaheira here in Nashkel. I do not want to kill Dynaheir so the plan now is to go rescue her on our own, then let Edwin join 'to keep an eye on the witch' and we can leave her safely. That way, I think nobody has to die.

Eileth, level 3 Beast Master, 32+6 HP
Viconia, level 3 Cleric, 18 HP
Imoen, level 4 Thief, 26 HP

I had exactly the same experience with my gnomish cleric/illusionist no-reload run...:) Literally the same! And he ended in the final throne fight vs Melissan. Wish Eileth to go further and defeat her in the end. Safe travels! :)

After a long absence I am returning to BG and starting a new no-reload character. I had a party of 6 kitless druids who were making their way through BG1 a couple of years back but decided to restart (not sure where the old game's save file is anyway).

Usually I play with difficulty-enhancing mods but this time decided to go for an almost unmodded install but with a severely handicapped character. I'm using a couple of convenience tweaks (item stacking, item containers added), and also the Exotic Items addition, although this is only for the Find Familiar scroll in High Hedge - see below. Playing BGTutu.

My character is a mage called Malin. He has a few 'issues' as you will see from his character record (taken on leaving Candlekeep):

Image IPB

Actually, his problems are worse than that because he is - for some reason nobody can get to the bottom of - incapable of memorising any spells whatsoever. The only thing he has going for him is that from time to time he hears a voice in his head that gives him instructions... and mostly (I hope!) the voice tells him the right things to do.

Should just add that Malin is perfectly capable of using spell scrolls, potions, wands, hypothetical future special abilties etc (ability scores permitting) - it's just actually memorising spells that he can't do.

So, onto the adventure...

In Candlekeep, Malin stayed clear of Carbos and Shank (either of whom would have slaughtered him). The storehouse rats were taken care of (they didn't fight back!) and various other menial tasks completed.

After Gorion's death, Malin met up with Imoen and 'ended up' taking her Wand of Missiles and Oil of Speed but leaving her in the wilderness. The voice in Malin's head insisted he go south rather than obey Gorion's instructions. He found his way to High Hedge without mishap and traded in the Oil of Speed for a scroll of Find Familiar, which he read to conjure a Fairy Dragon. The little creature (no doubt cursing its luck for ending up with such a useless master) turned the pair invisible with its Invisibility 10' Radius spell and they made their way east to Beregost.

Malin will be soloing - his handicaps would be largely meaningless and far less fun if he had other party members. Wish him luck! And more importantly, let's hope that the voice in his head keeps saying the right things...

Thanks. I hope so too.

Malin has made it to level 2 (Candlekeep xp + calm down Marl + return Tenya's bowl). Tenya got a couple of Wand of Missiles zaps and Fairy Dragon scratches - she opens with Entangle so there's plenty of time to land enoughdamage and get her to stop fighting and start talking. Then it was a simple case of intimidating the fishermen into returning the bowl. Saw lots of Ankhegs but obviously used the Fairy Dragon Invisibility to bypass them.

In Beregost, Malin ended up working for Silke. For some reason the voice in his head was mysteriously silent and, not sensing anything untoward, Malin blindly followed Silke's orders and helped her kill the unarmed 'thugs'. Well, actually the Fairy Dragon and Silke killed them, pretty sure none of Malin's darts connected with anything. He was left with three Potions of Defense, which were stashed in a nearby barrel (too heavy) and reputation 9.

A brief visit to Nashkel Carnival started Chapter 2 and upon resting Malin gained Larloch's Minor Drain (which overall I thought was more useful than Cure Light Wounds hence the deliberate rep drop).

Even worse than having Con 3 or Dex 3 is having Str 3, because of the lousy 5 lbs carrying limit. That's five potions. Or your familiar plus a wand plus three potions. Yeah, not so good.

So Malin carried out a daring heist. The long travel times, dangers of resting in the wild and limited Invisibility duration meant two valuable scrolls were used but the flesh golem cave was successfully raided with no personal risk.

Enter invisible and grab the loot (which breaks invisibility):

Image IPB

Read a Scroll of Invisibility before the golem comes back and clobbers him.

Image IPB

Equip the Cloak of the Wolf and activate it. Doesn't break invisibility and gives Malin the Str required to actually move with the stuff he just picked up. Then run away!

Image IPB

Malin is now back in Beregost and thinking about what to do next. He has lots of money from the Ring of Wizardry sale and is probably going to do some shopping...

A nice start touch_of_the_void.  Keep it up.

I've had a couple of attempts with a sorceror.  First time ended when her magic missiles proved slower than ankheg spit.  Second time surprised me when she was held by Neira despite running minor spell deflection.  I thought perhaps that was a bug, but have tested that it is BG2 vanilla behaviour so just need to be more careful when facing cleric spells in future.

Here's hoping for third time lucky with Raena.
Image IPB

I'm playing pretty much pure BGT in BG1, although I've also got SCS2 in the installation, which has a marginal effect in BG1.

Raena - Sorceror

The initial aim was to get invisibility to allow safe travel without ever being exposed to the possibility of an ambush by enemies with ranged attacks.  Bought 240 bullets and a sling in Candlekeep before being ambushed on the road.

After resting blinded Xzar and Montaron and killed them for their potions, then travelled to the Sword Coast.  The intention there was just to kill Shoal, but I carelessly moved too close to a spawn point and activated a ghoul, wolf, dire wolf and dread wolf.  After running and shooting for a while they all died, only to be replaced by another lot from the same spawn point (this is one of the things that annoys me about BGT compared to Tutu)!
Image IPB
Being more careful about movement I finally finished them off as well before dealing with Shoal.

That lot got Raena up to 7,916 XP for the cost of 147 bullets - giving her 8 extra HPs for the 2 levels.  In Beregost placeted Marl, gave Firebead a book, bought an improved sling and used that to exterminate some spiders.  That gave her level 4 and 3 more HPs as well as the ability to use invisibility.

So, does Minor Spell Deflection only apply to arcane spells thrown at the caster?

Wow, you actually took down all those wolves! Must have been a lot of running - they are almost as fast as you.
Good luck with the Sorcerer. Will be intersting to see her future spell picks.

(I've been toying with the idea of playing a Sorcerer and make only 'weird'* spell picks. Not for solo play, though, as party interaction and cooperation is the main appeal of BG for me.
*=not necessarily bad picks, just unconventional)

I'd guess Hold Person was not blocked because it is not a single-target spell, it has a small area of effect. Spell Deflection / Turning etc aren't sensitive to whether the spell is arcane or divine as far as I know.

Another small update on Malin the minimum-stat, non-spellcasting solo mage:

Having Str 17 in wolf form (and being able to activate the Cloak of the Wolf as often as you want) has made things much easier and Malin has built up a decent collection of wands (Missiles, Sleep, Paralyzation, Fire and Monster Summoning), amulets (Shield and Greenstone), a couple of rings (Prot +1 and Fire Resistance) and some potions.

No real risks have been taken and nothing has had the chance to roll an attack against Malin so far. He's also received max hp at both level 2 and level 3, which is a bonus. Of course the Con penalty takes away half of those but it's nice to know they're there for when I find a Potion of Fortitude.

Decided to take out Tarnesh and Neira, mainly so I don't forget about them and end up in a fight I hadn't expected later on. Played it very safe with charges from the Shield and Greenstone Amulets plus Potion of Freedom for Neira.

There was a dodgy moment when Tarnesh targeted the Fairy Dragon with Magic Missile rather than Malin (stupid positioning on my part) but fortunately its magic resistance kept it alive.

Image IPB

Probably didn't need to use a Wand of Fire charge against Neira but meh.

Image IPB

And down she goes

Image IPB

Malin has been having weird dreams about gloves and gnolls and will be heading back out into the wilderness shortly...

Nice going. So you have to be a wolf now to be able to move at all?

Looks like there are plenty of fire charges left on that wand (with my current mod setup, it does not seem to be possible to charge up anything to more than 5 charges).

Funny thing: in Swedish, Malin is a female name.

Heh, yes. Which makes things interesting when you consider that I do not allow myself to use quickslot items while polymorphed (doesn't feel right to me). If I really needed to move around in human form, Malin would either have to drop most of his inventory on the floor temporarily, or use the Scroll of Strength I bought for emergencies...

All the wands I have picked up have had 10+ charges. I need to be careful picking my fights because if I waste too many charges I won't be able to afford to buy the wand back... same goes for the Greenstone Amulet. What is your install exactly? I don't think I have anything that would affect this.

Yeah, I actually knew a woman called Malin where I used to work. I guess I just like the name...

That might be the difference, although in theory it shouldn't be - MSD should block area effect spells which are targeted at the protected character (and certainly does so for at least some area effect spells).  Cleric spells are much more likely than arcane ones to ignore magic resistance, so it seemed possible to me that they were also more likely to ignore magic protections.

Lots of running and lots of using pause button.  Wolfs in vanilla BG1 are nasty because they move faster than your characters, but in BG2 / BGT they have the same movement rate.  In practice that means you can create a bit of distance by taking correct route round obstacles, making groups of chasing enemies get in each others way, allowing an enemy to start an attack animation before you move etc - so using missiles is easy enough, though I agree it is a bit wearisome for a novice sling user.

I haven't tested different spells, but I remember it protecting against lightning bolt (though you could argue that's a spell with a continuous succession of point impacts rather than a single area effect).

Raena - sorceror

From now on Raena should always be invisible when travelling.  She made her first use of that spell to travel up to the Friendly Arm Inn.  With magic missiles now available taking a belt off an ogre on the way was child's play, though not quite as easy as finding a ring of protection and a ring of even more magic missiles.  While in the area returned yet another ring to Joia.  Then used a magic missile + slingstone combination on Tarnesh (keeping the option open of diving into the temple if necessary) and went to give Landrin back his goods.

Back around Beregost Raena quickly returned a letter to Mirianne, some boots to Zhurlong and a sword to Perdue.  All the obstacles were simply dealt with using magic missiles and sling.

Moving down to Nashkel Neira was blinded, Oopah shot up and Vitiare caught a selection of magic missiles (running in between to prevent his sticky fingers stealing anything).  Raena also bought the green protection from petrification scroll from the carnival.  A quick trip to the mines should have dealt with Greywolf, but Raena ran out of ammunition for her sling, which resulted in her taking a whack from Greywolf's sword - good job it wasn't a critical.  Greywolf's reprieve was short-lived as she returned from the carnival fully stocked to finish him off.  Note that for those without distance attacks Raena doesn't use blind as this tends to make the enemies run all over the place and be harder to deal with than if they are just chasing her.

After turning one of Prism's emeralds in for the bounty (and selling the other) Raena went north east on the way to Firewine Bridge.  She found time to save a cow from some hungry xvarts on the way (only activating the xvarts one at a time to ensure they didn't have a chance to kill the cow).  The grateful farmer got her to level 5 and a welcome extra 6 HPs along with the ability to cast PfE and Knock (just because she's greedy).  The latter trait was quickly demonstrated at the Carnival.  I was trying to time the arrival of the guards correctly to get a better screenshot, but misjudged it and got spotted by them - so Raena used invisibility to complete rifling the store.

Finally at Firewine Bridge Raena acquired some bracers that Meilum had no further need for.  The poor chap clearly wanted to speak to her, but couldn't get a sentence out past the mouthful of magic missiles.

With her sling now being a far more potent weapon Raena ventured to the basilisk area.  Protected by the scroll she shot up all the separated basilisks with her sling before recruiting Korax.  Now invisible she guided him to Mutamin - his famous last words on this screenshot will bring a tear to anyone's eye.  Killing his pet basilisks got Raena to level 6 (5 more HPs and minor spell deflection).

Moving down to the party Raena hoped that Korax would paralyse Kirian before she could react and turn everyone hostile - but that failed.  However, Raena used the stinking cloud scroll taken from Mutamin on the party and, choosing her moments, managed to blind Peter, Kirian and Lindin while they were helpless.  The casters were quickly finished off with the help of a couple of magic missiles each, leaving 2 first level spells left for the day.  Some gnolls intruded while Raena was shooting up Lindin and while running them round she discovered Baerin - who promptly got blinded as well.  A bit of running and shooting later and the party were all dead.

Note on shooting blinded characters.  If you just leave them targeted them with a missile weapon they will quickly move out of range and you may well lose them and have the aggravation of trying to find them again.  It's much less hassle overall to shoot and then move with them for the rest of the round before retargeting - repeat until dead.
