Grrr...wrote a post but the forum ate it. Basically, the quattro made it to Nashkel OK, just one ambush on the way. Neira and Karlat were defeated without any trouble as well. Everyone still level 1 except Hanna who leveled when we talked to Noober.

Nice updates. I vote for Kobolts being the SCS version of kobolds and the Photobucket changes don't impress me. It wasn't a quick site before and they've featured it up which makes it feel slower still - each link involves opening and closing an extra pop-up unless I've missed the obvious.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding the problem correctly, but are you working from the thumbnails for the folder your pictures are in?  I find it far quicker to click on the links shown under each thumbnail there and then use ctrl-C (and then ctrl-V in the forum post) rather than wait the seconds (sometimes minutes) until Photobucket is prepared to copy the link automatically for you.

Welcome back Corey - good to see you in action again.

@USSNorway: Thanks, been a crazy week! :)

@corey russel: Nice portraits! :) Good luck in your run.

Ru'in Atta Update 1
CandleKeep: Chores and both baddies with no problems
Cleared first screen with Imoen in tow. She got a bit too close to a Dire Wolf south of FAI and nearly died before Ru'in took it down.
Ogre: Snuck up on him and attacked with thier bows, kept the belt for Ru'in.
While clearing out the wilderness south of FAI they both nearly died to a pack of Kobolds. Retreated to FAI and paid the priest to heal them.
Tarnesh:Wasted a potion of clarity when I saw him about to cast something nasty. Imoen caused his life to cease with a magic missile.
Picked up Ajantis and Ru'in gained a level for returning Joia's ring. Geared up and took revenge on those kobalds.
Karlat: Karlat ran back inside shortly after I lured him into a crossfire in the street. never seen him do that before. They all piled though the door after him and took him down.
Saying the right thing to Marl gained Jahiera a level.
Silke: Surrounded her, she didn't get a chance to get a spell off. Sent Garrick to FAI
Spiders:Khalid lured them out and Jahiera cast entangle and the group took them down with arrows and rocks
Khalid gained a level for delivering the letter to Mirianne and both Ru'in and Ajantis leveled up on a pack of brown bears.
Vampiric Wolves: Ru'in charmed two ordinary wolves and sent them against the pack of baddies led by a vampiric. Jahiera cast entangle on the pack while khalid and Ajantis led a dread wolf away from the main group. Ru'in took the vampiric down with +1 arrows and the rest was easy. That is until the other vampiric showed up! Ajantis tried to distract it while Ru'in fired away but he got held. Khalid tried to intervien but just ended up being a second casualty. Ru'in's arrows found thier mark shortly after.
While clearing the wilderness south of Beregost jahiera fell to a poison arrow fired by a hobgoblin elite. Jahiera revived, the group is rested and geared up to head to Nashkel.

Ru'in Atta, R3, 23 HPs, 92 kills (Vampiric Wolf)
Imoen, Thief 4, 20 HPs, 36 kills (Karlat)
Jahiera, F2/D2, 20 HPs, 17 kills (Ghast), 1 Death ( by Hobgoblin Elite)
Khalid, F2, 21 HPs, 7 kills (War dog), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)
Ajantis, Paladin 3, 25 HPs, 13 kills (War dog), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)

Happy Super bowl everybody!! :wizard:

Thanks Grond0! And Gate70 is right, they have changed it, they no longer have a link underneath the thumbnail anymore, you have to open another window to get the link -- the window isn't real speedy though, so as Gate70 says, they made their site slower.

The Photobucket issues;

Before they added encryption you could use a naming convention to speed up posting;
Eg cass101, cass102 & cass103... with this system I can copy/ paste the code for links and just change the finale number HOWEVER the new system adds meaningless gibberish to the code Eg cass101_cxsfd, cass102_fghjk & cass103_ytrew supposedly to increase security (doubtful) and it’s this extra code that is mucking people up.

As of a couple days ago they finally acknowledged that (some) people don’t want this undocumented change and have allowed us to turn it off... by going first into privacy and then account setting to untick a box.

To be clear, keep the change by all means if you like it but I have to wonder about a company that makes such a sweeping alteration to their product without so much as an email informing their customers what’s happening and then acts surprised when they get negative feedback about it?
Anyhow back to gaming guys.

Yes. I have all the SCS tactical component installed in fact- with full pre-buffs.

The Mines were fine, but the Bandit Camp is going to take some planning...

I also notice that your hp rolls are a little low... good luck!

They've been spotty. Yours (Cassia's) were terrible until level 4. Most of the boys have had lousy rolls as well. Mine have been pretty good though actually and Serg's have been fantastic (he has 35HP at level 5).

Regardless of the hitpoint rolls, I appreciate the good luck wish: my party play is rusty and there is a whole lot of ugly on the horizon for The Avatars.

Good work - SCS is certainly spicing it up for you ussnorway.

I note Cassia has sword/shield, have been thinking of doing that too once I get a suitable buckler. I assume we all know this is a good (although questionably-legitimate) shapeshifter option (other than offhanding the dagger of Venom or Belm).

edit, & Photobucket - I was on the beta new version, I did as suggested on the previous version. & good luck to the recent entrants again.

huh... What's the issue with having a buckler?

FYI there is a +1 buckler, 2nd floor of Mae'Var's Guildhall in the docks district but IMO "Staff of Arundel" from Joluv (my pick) or the "Ixil's Nail +4" (upgradable) from Watchers Keep would serve her better depending on playstyle i.e. spells or combat btw at level 15 you can become a Fire Elemental.

@ussnorway you appear to be having a tough time with my namesake, my apologies.

Alesia_BH wrote...

Also way to color me psychotic, and deservedly so :P

Anyway, Bassilus fell really easily, so Krimlor has a shiny new hammer. This was probably the first fight I buffed up properly for, 'Strider, Alesia, & Pot all cast mirror image, I used the wand of monster summoning, the clerics cast their group buffs, then I dropped sleep, web, and fireball from the neclace, which left only Bassilus and a lone skelly. After they were dead I ran around the area unsuccessfully looking for more enemies to fight before the summoned gnolls disappeared.

Despite my focus on melee weapons, I should probably make it clear that everyone typically uses ranged weapons, or kites. Grond, 'Strider, & Alesia all have short bows so I favour them to attack, while Krimlor & Cassia kite. Krimlor also has a +1 sling, while Cassia uses darts. Pot kites if the enemies don't have ranged weapons, otherwise throws daggers, and casts if things warrant a spell. However note this is my game, where throwing daggers are weightless, and I have 999 item stacking, whereas some of your mod loadouts make daggers non-viable, either due to weight, or stacks limited to 10. So if you want to change proficiencies, go right ahead.

After Bassilus, we headed west, 'Strider got more kiss than he bargained for from Shoal, causing the group to retaliate and kill both the ogre-mage and Shoal. Some nice XP from the sirines followed, along with a few tense moments as various people got charmed. However I made sure to switch to the melee weapon before the charm landed, it's bad enough losing Grond's damage per second without having it turned on us as well. We continued south and cleared out the sirines up to the golem cave, then snuck in, killed one golem, stole the tome, and fled the area with another golem on our tail all the way to the edge of the map.

I'm probably clear the area above the firewine bridge next, mostly for the gauntlets for Krimlor, and after that I'm contemplating taking on the basilisks. This will probably be harder than the fish in a barrel challenge it normally is, due to the scs changes. Previously you just had to walk around behind Korax, and pepper them with arrows. Now I may have to buy a green scroll for Grond, because the blue spells only last for 5 rounds. Or 5 turns. Anyway, after that, I should be ready to head for the mines.

@everyone - thanks for welcoming me back!

Just a quick note - we got the dexterity gauntlets for Joshua, but along the the way we encountered two winter wolves at once - they one-shotted Hanna for the first party death - the winter wolves helped everyone get a level, so all in all still was good. After getting the gauntlets, we returned to Nashkel to raise Hanna and are resuming our adventures.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #5):

We headed North (via the Beregost where we sold some of our trophies i.e. Winter Wolfs pelts and bandit's scalps to Officer Vai) and arrived to the farmland being infected  by huge insect beasts. Tried to kill a couple of them but they have made their saves vs sleep far too often, Grond and Krimlor were badly wounded by their acid spits so after killing a pair of them we talked with Sonner and sneaked to the next area (Baldur's Gate Bridge). Tenya revealed some new information about fishermen we talked earlier so we agreed to help her. But first we visited one more infected farm (this time by Zombies) and a humble village called Ulgoth's Beard. Local merchant has some pretty nice items on stock so we obtained Greenstone Amulet, Cloak of Displacement, Wands of Frost and Heavens as well as some spells for Pot (even though he can't cast them yet). Back to the *insect* farm we decided to make another attempt to hunt those beasts. Krimlor wearing all protecting items vs missiles led the way but as it turned out the beasts bites as hard as they spits... Nevertheless they all were eliminated and we descend into their nest. Cassia in werecat form and with Wand of the Heavens shone there and we found some nice items in a treasure horde. Brought the body to the Farmer and spared some gold to him to easy his pain. Fishermen were killed and Tenya promised some reward in the future (hope she isn't a liar).

The Avatars: Chapter 4- The Nashkel Mines (Part 1)

It is done. We have restored order to the Nashkel Mines: I can hardly believe it.

Our descent into the mines was harrowing -and there were times when the sheer mass of opposition was overwhelming. But we handled each challenge capably- even admirably. I'm still in a state of shock, and again left with questions as to how we have accomplished so much in so little time.

Part of the answer is my companions. While I have inexplicably become the spiritual leader of our band, I have been out-shinned at every turn by the heroism of others. Cassia, Grond, and BlackStrider have all amazed me with the heights they have soared to during our time together. In the mines it was Krimlor's turn.

Now with Ankheg Plate and the Gauntlets of Dexterity to complement his shield, Krimlor took on the role that Cassia fulfilled on our march southward from Beregost: leading the party against ranged foes equipped with the Girdle of Piercing and wielding the Wand of Sleep. With his formidable defenses -our wand- and his Commands, he was well positioned to quell all opposition before the more vulnerable among us approached.
Image IPB

Krimlor filled his role beautifully. And while a brilliantly sniped arrow felled Pot, Krimlor was a fortress to the rest of us. Even when he had to wade through traps, and even when the foes kept coming and coming -wave upon wave- he was unshakeable. Our rock, our pillar: Our Krimlor.
Image IPB

Krimlor himself was impressive. But what I've come to understand is that he is at his best when working in tandem with Grond. Somehow partnering with Grond seems to deepen Krimlor's sense of purpose -enhancing his focus and clarity of vision. Grond gains from the association as well- benefiting from the stability and assurance of Krimlor’s presence. They are brilliant on their own, but even better together. Our battle with the Kolbod Chieftan made that point clear to me.

The Chieftan was by far the most substantial warrior among the kolbolds, and he was flanked by an impressive Shaman capable of casting multiple spells beyond the comprehension of Pot, our party's most skilled mage. That pair was in turn supported by a cadre of guards and commandos. When Grond first relayed the details of his scouting mission, the Chieftan and his allies seemed destined to deny our passage. But they didn't: We came up with a plan, and put it into action. And this time, we did it together.

The Shaman was the lynchpin of our opposition- that much was clear: If he could be taken out of the picture, we would prevail. But how? He was too powerful to be lulled to sleep by our wand or Krimlor's Commands. And he would surely be Shielded and Mirror Imaged within an instant- frustrating our bullets and arrows. I thought on this. But it was Grond who came up with the plan and Krimlor who hammered out the details.

Krimlor would lead us into battle as before, but he would not be carrying the Wand of Sleep this time. Instead Grond, flanking him, would activate the wand while Krimlor used his aura to cast Silence15" Radius- targeting the all important Shaman. We could use more spells Cassia noted. "True lassie, but you know you can't take an arrow," Krimlor said. Cassia didn't speak. But with a giggle and a Snap, the problem was solved: she wouldn't be in the line of fire, her image would. Krimlor nodded approvingly and then turned to Strider: "And what about you, what can you bring." Always concise -and always on point- Strider replied "Back up. For your Silence that is," twirling the Wand of Paralyzation.

We were ready- we all had our roles: All except me, I realized. Before I could say anything Krimlor snorted" "Unless you can snap your glitters too you'd best stay out of it girlie." I paused and searched my mind for a response, but I knew he was right: I would linger in the rear- approaching only when the bows and spells were out of play.

The time for planning had ended: The time for action was upon us. We approached.

Krimlor took the lead and released his spell. Grond, just behind him -emerging from the shadows- let fly with his wand. Blackstrider -over Krimlor's other shoulder- focused on the Shaman, and readied his wand in the event Krimlor's Silence failed. Cassia -via her Glittersnapped Image- began a barrage of Charms. It all worked beautifully: the Shaman was Silenced, the commandos went to sleep, and the remaining guards were charmed one by one.
Image IPB

In the end the Chieftan was left battling his allies in melee -starring down a hail of arrows and facing a Krimlor Command.
Image IPB

We had prevailed and no one was injured. Only one foe remained: the orchestrator -the ringleader - the master of the chaos: Mulahey.

Best,

A.

Gaming Note: The shot that nixed Pot was super-cool. Pot was at the back of the party line. A Kobold hopped into range and -ignoring all the other targets- immediately fired a single kill shot directly at him. Intelligent targeting is fun (though maybe not for Pot...).

The Avatars: Chapter 4- The Nashkel Mines (Part 2)

Our battle with Mulahey began so abruptly -and ended so abruptly- that we scarcely had time to prepare. If our fight with the Chieftan was won on planning, our fight with Mulahey was won on instinct. Krimlor was the hero once again- though we all owe a debt to the quick thinking of Grond.

The Chieftan battle deepened our appreciation of scouting and intelligence. We had hoped to have the same advantage heading into the battle with Mulahey. That was not to be. Upon entering Mulahey’s cave we headed north where Grond repeatedly tried to enter the shadows in order to survey our foe. During his third unsuccessful attempt, Mulahey approached: We were completely unprepared, countless minions -skeletons and kobolds- appeared out of nowhere. I gasped: this could be the end I thought. But it wasn’t- not near in fact.

Without a moments thought Grond activated the Necklace of Missles. Suddenly those many minions vanished and Mulahey’s concentration was interrupted.
Image IPB

Krimlor -not missing a beat- tossed a Silence spell bottling up Mulahey. The tide had turned decisively in an instant- even though Grond had been badly wounded by a lone surviving kobold’s arrow.
Image IPB

Grond -healed via potion- landed the finishing blow. The battle was over: We were victorious.
Image IPB

Or so it seemed. But in the heady wake of Mulahey’s fall a band of elite kobold ambushed us. We felt threatened once again, but in an instant, BlackStrider -already Shielded- cast a spell, Chill Touch, and then began a dazzling Offensive Spin. All four elite kobold’s were killed in short-order. It was now truly over.
Image IPB

Surveying the carnage -standing over Mulahey’s singed body and seeing his holy symbol on the floor- we were all filled with an exhilarating sense of accomplishment. We all wanted to speak. But then we realized there was no need: we knew each other’s minds- a look alone was enough to affirm the bond between us. It was a beautiful silence. I’ll never forget it.

After drinking in as much of the moment as we could, we turned our attention back  to the task at hand: sorting the belongings and prepping for the return journey to Nashkel. Krimlor -having picked up a glorious ring- was the first to speak.

Holding the object before his eyes- gripped between his thumb and forefinger- he sighed admiringly and said, simply: “It suits me,” with a vaguely avaricious grin. The matter seemed settled, but suddenly -with the lightning flash of a tiny hand- the ring was gone: The dwarf froze in astonishment. “Yeah, but I can Glittersnap-double it,” Cassia chirped, and soon giggled gleefully as she slipped the ring onto her finger. Cassia was pleased, but as she raised her hand to admire the jewel, everyone noticed it was gone again, and this time no hand had been seen. Stunned silence overtook the party. Then eyes turned towards me.

I was kneeling down by the ground a few feet away- sliding a a short sword and a pair of boots into my rucksack. I heard no words, but I could feel the questions and knew I had to answer. “It’s party loot,” I said, casually- without turning my attention away from the contents of my sack.

“What? You want to divide the ring six ways, lassie?” Krimlor scoffed, to which I replied: “I sold my ring.” “Do you remember who I’m carrying?” was Krimlor’s answer. “Ok, I sold Pot’s ring. But it’s the same principle: We need the money.”

Still unsatisfied, but unsure of what to say Krimlor stammered “And who are you going to sell it too?” “Someone without quick fingers,” I said: “Trust me.” Krimlor wanted to press the issue, but then -just as he was about to speak- he noticed his Ring of Protection was gone. After a moment of puzzlement, a look of comprehension crept across his face, and he said “As you’ll have it girlie, as you’ll have it.” He rested his hand on my shoulder, and we all understood: It was time to go: The mayor of Nashkel awaits us.

Best,

A.

The Avatars: Interlude I- Dumb Luck

Late at night: Puzzled.

I am looking at my map -and I am reflecting on all we have accomplished. And I am at a complete loss.

We have ranged widely though northern Amn and the heart of the Sword Coast in a seemingly random pattern. And yet everywhere we have gone -everywhere- we have accomplished something -or discovered something- that has advanced our goals one way or another: sometimes goals we didn’t even know we had yet. Our path has made no sense at all looking forwards in time. But looking backwards in time -backwards- it’s crystalline: perfection. There can be only one explanation: foreknowledge- unconscious foreknowledge. But how? I can’t understand.

With the fire dying down here at the Jovial Juggler -and with everyone but Krimlor asleep- I’ve decided to share my concerns.

***

I outlined the argument with precision: with detail- covering every nuance, tracing out every step on the map. I went on and on. And on.

Krimlor seemed to follow me all the way- he seemed to agree with me all the way. And yet all he did was sigh, grasp at his beard, avoid eye contact. I was tired -breathless- by the time I finished saying all I had to say. I awaited his reply.

He covered his face in exasperation -rubbed his eyes and ran his hands through his hair. He breathed in deeply -exhaled deeper- and finally he said: “Dumb luck, lassie. That’s all there is in this world.

Silence.

“That’s it? That’s your answer?” I said incredulously.

“You want foreknowledge, I’ll give you foreknowledge: Drink six bitter black ales and with your little frame, I can tell you you won’t be thinking about this any more.”

I didn’t speak, instead I studied him carefully. I could see he was nervous. I could tell: I could tell.

“You know something you’re not telling me don’t you?”

Krimlor sighed again-  rubbed his eyes again, and said: “I told you about the ales didn’t I? And that’s all I’m saying.

Silence again.

“But I thought we were friends,” I said sheepishly. That broke his heart- his breath escaped him. And then, meekly he replied: “We are deary- we are: the best of friends. It’s just...”

“Just?”

“It’s just...I don’t think we’re ready for this yet. Leave it be, leave it be.”

“And drink the ales?"

“You don’t have to drink the ales. Just forget all about this. And don’t say anything -anything at all- to anyone else: Not yet.”

Those were our last words: We didn’t even say goodnight.

Best,

A.

Ru'in Atta Update 2

Ajantis fell to a poison arrow on the way to Nashkel. (Note to self, antitoxins would be nice at this point!) Planning on reviveing him in Nashkel the group rested up so Jahiera could heal him afterwards. An ambush by a large group of kobolds during the night gave Ru'in an excuse to exercise her melee skills.
Neira: Jahiera blessed the group before entering, Ajantis cast protection from evil on Ru'in while Ru'in attempted (Successfully) to interupt her spells. Ru'in's critical ended her.
Ajantis cast detect evil and Edwin's card came up. Sacked him and took his gold.
Zordral: Close call with this one. Jahiera covered Ru'in with Bearskin and Ajantis cast Protect from Evil agin. Was unable to interupt his spells. He managed to cause fear in everyone but Imoen, who emptied her magic missles on him while the group ran in oblivious circles and soaked up Zordral's  Melf's Acid arrows.  Ru'ins bearskin held up but everyone else took nasty hits. In the end the fear wore off as did his mirror images and the group decended on him, thwaking him into submission.
Greywolf: Jahiera Blessed and Ajantis Protected from evil again. Khalid tanked and gulped two potions (both just as Greywolf critted him) and Jahiera and Ajantis spent the battle using healing spells. In the end Ajantis got the kill and the group took the 300 gold for the gems and Ru'in got a shiny new +2 longsword.

Ru'in Atta, R3, 23 HPs, 118 kills (Vampiric Wolf)
Imoen, Thief 4, 20 HPs, 43 kills (Karlat)
Jahiera, F3/D3, 20 HPs, 24 kills (Ghast), 1 Death ( by Hobgoblin Elite)
Khalid, F3, 27 HPs, 15 kills (Zordral), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)
Ajantis, Paladin 3, 25 HPs, 16 kills (War dog), 2 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf, Hobgoblin Elite)

Grond0/Gate70 multiplayer attempt 11: Sati (Grond0, protaganist) and Vurro (Gate70).

This update closely follows our last one (although you might be forgiven for not realising that given the amount of traffic on this thread at the momentImage IPB).

The duo started the session in the process of obtaining the Helm of Glory from Drelik.  That completed the acquisition of items in the city and a quick tour of the realms followed to check for any other worthwhile items:
- first up was a fire resistance ring and a scroll of protection from magic available in the far south.
- moving north Vurro demonstrated his immunity to charm while obtaining the tome from Durlag's Tower.
- the next target was the Golden Girdle from the basilisk area.  With XP still some way below the cap Vurro used a green scroll to protect himself and started slaughtering basilisks.  At one point a basilisk saw him and started chasing, while Vurro moved on to the next.  As a result the first basilisk moved into what had seemed safe territory to Sati and she was suddenly threatened with a damn good stoning.  I was not confident that the boots of speed would get Sati away in time, so swapped various bits of equipment and took a potion of invulnerability.  However, in the event she did not have to make a saving throw.  Vurro took the close call out on Kirian's party - even some random monsters joining in made no impression on him.

Back in the City the duo engaged the defenders at the Iron Throne.  Vurro used the green amulet and steam-rollered them, while Sati picked off the spell-casters from the rear.  Vurro also did the hard work on the return to Candlekeep; initially clearing treasure from the tombs and then ploughing through the dopplegangers to beat up Prat and his colleagues.  The basilisks though were left alone while he took an invisibility potion and Sati sneaked past.

Slythe lasted only seconds and bequeathed his coronation invitation to Vurro.  At the palace Vurro further reinforced his abilities with potions and the combination of two big hitters made a nasty mess of the dopplegangers.  At the end of that lot both Vurro and Sati had reached their final level at 150,000 XP.

The final action of the session was moving through the maze.  Vurro initially used his speed advantage to deal with all the jellies before Sati could catch up, though he did wait for help against the doom guards and skeleton warriors.  The fire and lightning traps were skirted, so we'll have to remember the potential danger there on the way out.

Vurro, cavalier 8, 88 HPs. 234 kills (47 this session).
Sati, archer 8, 69 HPs. 243 kills (46 this session).

Mittrek the Human Fighter: Update 2

Made some good progress the last 36 hours - since it's just a 4 man team, not clearing everything and just going for upgrades primarily. Of the important items in the southern two rows of the map, we've obtained most of those. A hold person managed to convince Melium to part with his bracers, which went to Hanna. Naskhel mine problem dealt with easily. Our MVP group member is easily Mittrek, as he does 49% of the kills, and does ton of damage with his composite long bow +1. Despite making Joshua's CON less than it should be (16 CON), he's tanked well so far, even against ogres. Our next short-term goal is to get the CON tome for Joshua, as we have charm protection with the greenstone amulet.

Party Status:
Joshua - Level 5 Undead Hunter, 46 HP
Hanna - Level 5 Monk, 43 HP
Mittrek - Level 5 Fighter, 42 HP
Paja - Level 4 Cleric/Level 5 Thief, 26 HP

I should mention is the intention is to beat the game with this party, only if a group member gets chunked will we open the roster to NPC members.
