Gaming Note: The shot that nixed Pot was super-cool. Pot was at the back of the party line. A Kobold hopped into range and -ignoring all the other targets- immediately fired a single kill shot directly at him. Intelligent targeting is fun (though maybe not for Pot...).

I was starting to think it was just my bad playstyle.

Ru'in Atta Update 3:

Sent Jaheira and Khalid to FAI, picked up Branwen and Minsc then headed towards the Gnoll stronghold. Combining their charm animal skills, Ru'in and Misc charmed two wolves, sent them into the Xvart village then Misc went beserk and raged through the throng duel wielding maces. Once he gets going there's apparently no stopping him, though I had to watch him closely when Ursa appeared. Thankfully I had enough healing spells to bring him back up before he came out of it.

Caldo
: Made the mistake of going berserk with Minsc again. He took care of Caldo and his pal quickly enough but apparently that wasn't enough for him. Ajantis fell to a single blow from his mace.

Bridge: Hairtooth and the other guy fell with little effort and Minsc gained a pair of Dex Bracers.

Picked up Dynaheir and gave her the Ring of Wizardry and and Zordral's robe, she memorized blindness, Magic M and Armor for now and the group rested then grabbed the tome of Charisma (should I use this on my PC?)

Took the long bridge back and the road was perilous indeed. Just in case Ru'in and Minsc charmed three black bears and brought them along. Minsc and the bears took on an Ogre half way across the bridge (surprised it could hold all their weight) while the group pelted it with arrows. Unfortunately Misnc caught a poison arrow and Branwen, on the other side of the bridge was holding the antidote. Minsc fell from the poison and the bears killed the ogre. I sent them against the first Hobgoblin elite as a decoy while Dynaheir blinded him. She too got hit by a poinson arrow however but was able to get close enough to Jahiera to get the antidote in time. The bears, dead the group crept across the bridge to find the other sniper. Again Dynaheir blinded him and Ru'in felled him with an arrow.

Neville:While Dynahier cast blindness on Neville Branwen entangled the crowd of archers then Dynahier cast stinking cloud over the lot of them and let them wallow for a bit. It was easy enough to fell Neville with arrows from afar and then do the same to the throng of disabled archers. Ru'in now has duel enchanted swords thanks to the +1 she found on Neville's body.

Ambushed by three ogres on the way back to Nashkel the group managed to take them down with little injury,  Back in Nashkel a revived Minsc (and Ajantis) complained about chafing. It took several days of rest to get everyone back to 100%

Ru'in Atta, R4, 32 HPs, 212 kills (Vampiric Wolf)
Imoen, Thief 5, 26 HPs, 52 kills (Dread Wolf)
Jahiera, F3/D3, 20 HPs, 24 kills (Ghast), 1 Death ( by Hobgoblin Elite)
Khalid, F3, 27 HPs, 15 kills (Zordral), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)
Ajantis, Paladin 3, 25 HPs, 27 kills (Greywolf), 3 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf, Hobgoblin Elite, Minsc)
Branwen, Cleric 3, 26 HPs, 13 Kills (Ogre)
Minsc, R4, 33 HPs, 45 Kills (Cave Bear), 1 Death (Hobgoblin Elite)
Dynaheir, Invoker 4, 21 HPs, 1 Kill (Carrion Crawler)

Should we kill one of the guards for his armor? Or would that be evil?

It would definitely be evil. Of course you could charm one to help you fight an enemy. I regularly do that against Tarnesh or the spiders. It's not your fault if the scripting is rubbish is it? :D The guards i'm thinking of are the Morninglord Guards or the Caravan Guards, both introduced by mods but I don't know which one.

I concur: I'm definitely in the killing-people-for-their stuff-isn't-very-nice camp. :P

To be clear, I wasn't posing an ethical question with that line: I was quoting a character who was in turn quoting a forumite.

Best,

Mittrek the Human Fighter - Update 3
Traveling with: Joshua (Undead Hunter), Hanna (Monk), Paja (Cleric/Thief)

So our little band continues to get experience and deal with the many hostiles on the Coast. Near where we exited the Nashkel Mines we encountered some assassins who were happy to see Mittrek, so they could kill him, I guess. However, they sorely over-estimated their chances. Joshua charged with his -6 AC and greenstone amulet, 3 skeletons assisted him. Moments after Joshua showed himself, Hanna dove into the fray with her fists. I (Mittrek) continued to assist by using my bow - with the bracers of archery, my attacks have been devastating. And even Paja got in two decisive spells a silence, which silenced both enemy casters and a hold person on one of the thieves.

There were also two tombs with Ghasts - with an undead hunter leading the way, they were of no consequence. The Revenant, however was no joke. It forced Hanna to use a long sword, as her fists were doing no damage, even though she isn't quite as fast as her fists using her long sword +1. Nevertheless, Hanna got the decisive play for this battle - she managed to stun the Revenant - after that we put that undead beast to rest.

We also met a crazy guy with Jelly pets (Narcillus) - everybody except Joshua ranged attacked him dead - Paja used her wand of heavens for the first time on him, but that was a little overkill...for the jellies we used our melee - we won with no deaths.

We met a number of Sirines on the coast. We would have preferred to leave such beautiful creatures alone, but they attacked us and forced us to slay them. Joshua was protected by the greenstone amulet, so he never succumbed to their charms. We also found a cave with 3 flesh golems -- they party defeated them OK, though granted Joshua's -19 to crushing attacks due to using a potion of absorption and belt of crushing may have had something to do with that. We found an unidentified tome, which the High Hedge mage Thalantyr later identified as a constitution tome - we gave that to Joshua. Joshua, Hanna and Mittrek have almost identical toughness.

During our travels, we ran into the mad Bassilus. Joshua is immune to hold, so that makes Bassilus most dangerous weapon moot. Hanna approached by stealth, and the party opened fire at once. Bassilus undead minions fell to the ground due to our great responses in dialogue, and Bassilus himself fell very fast. We turned in his symbol for 5000 gold, so guess we are happy to have met this crazed guy. In the same area, met some goblin bandits, but they could do little to our group.

There were also some dangerous baslisks to the east, including a crazy gnomish mage. Since only Joshua had protection from the basilisks, he cleared the mage and the many baslisks in the area. Before that though, the party encountered a rather arrogant water haven group - the group was utterly destroyed - with Joshua's and Hanna's impressive melee, our skeleton friends, Mittrek's unrelenting ranged damage and Paja's successful silence, the "experienced" Water Haven group was slain quickly.

(Note: due to my EasyTutu install, potions of thievery do not stack, even though they do in both vanilla and BG 2. Thus, the only way to pick-pocket anything really is to borrow Garrick - which explains the next set of actions). There was a bard who said his mistress had a job for us - little did we know until the last moment, is that she wanted us to slay innocent men. We were having none of that and had to slay the mistress. The bard said he wanted to join us, so we let him on a VERY temporary basis. Next the group headed to Ulgoth's Beard. The bard (Garrick) gulped a thievery potion and flicked a ring of free action off Dushai - he gave that to Mittrek then proceeded to pick-pocket Shangalar for everything he owned. With Shangalar's loot we made about 1200 gold, not bad all things considered. However, now we no longer needed the Bard's services, so left him in Ulgoth's Beard.

We found the crazed killer Brage, but managed to convince him to go to the Temple of Helm - the Temple's priest was very pleased with us and gave us a 1000 gold for our troubles.

Joshua told me he would like to search for the bandits in the east next, so we will do that after we take a well deserved rest in Beregost.

Thanks Serg. Some of the more challenging portions are coming up (Black Talon Elites in Pelvale, Bandit Camp archers), I'll try to be careful. Hanna is finally high enough level she can melee most of the time, and that's definitely a help as her melee is much more powerful than her darts. She is -9 to missiles and Joshua is -15 so they both should do well as our point men so to speak.

Mittrek the Human Fighter - Update 4
Due to my install, the only way I can get to the Bandit Camp is to join the bandits, so the party does so. Paja (who loves looting by the way) loots everything that isn't nailed down. We pass on Khosann, we just don't need his full plate I don't think. While that and a ring would be a big upgrade for Mittrek, he almost never tanks except ambushes, the Ankheg armor has been working well so far for him.

For Tazok's Tent, we buff with PfE for Joshua and Mittrek, STA potion on Joshua, remove fear, bless and chant. Once in the tent, Joshua kept the two close melees busy, while everyone else concentrated on the mage, including Hanna getting in that mage's face with her fists. All these enemies fell, VERY fast...so fast, Paja couldn't even get a hold person off before the enemies were dead!

We looted the tent and saved here time for chess club for corey_russell. We have like 25,000 gold but not much to spend it on. Will probably recharge the necklace of missiles at one point and possibly the greenstone amulet too. The amulet isn't quite as critical as usual, with Joshua's natural immunity to hold spells.

Ru'in Att: quick update

Used the tome of leadership on the PC since I plan importing into BGII if I make it through.

The group loaded up on antidotes, bought a raise dead scroll from the temple and headed back toward FAI via the mountains (half ogres and met Drizt), High Hedge (Perdue's sword and spells for Dynahier, +1 arrows for Ru'in), and Beregost (Rewards, +1 short bow for Imoen, +1 mace for Minsc). Claiming their reward for clearing out the spiders they headed back to Nashkel to face the mines. The round trip took a lot out of them so a quick rest was in order before descending.

Current Location: Parked on the first level of the mines

Ru'in Atta, R4, 32 HPs, 262 kills (Vampiric Wolf)
Imoen, Thief 5, 26 HPs, 59 kills (Dread Wolf)
Jahiera, F3/D3, 20 HPs, 24 kills (Ghast), 1 Death ( by Hobgoblin Elite)
Khalid, F3, 27 HPs, 15 kills (Zordral), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)
Ajantis, Paladin 4, 29 HPs, 41 kills (Greywolf), 3 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf, Hobgoblin Elite, Minsc)
Branwen, Cleric 4, 32 HPs, 20 Kills (Cave Bear)
Minsc, R4, 33 HPs, 78 Kills (Cave Bear), 1 Death (Hobgoblin Elite)
Dynaheir, Invoker 4, 21 HPs, 2 Kills (Carrion Crawler)

Dynaheir's Mage Book
Level 1: Armor, Blindness, Burning Hands, Chromatic Orb, Color Spray, Grease, Identify, Larloch's Minor Drain, Magic Missile, Shocking Grasp
Level 2: Invisibility, Mirror Image, Stinking Cloud

I don't know why I keep reading that Dynaheir sucks, she's everything I could want in a support mage. Currently she has 3 blindness, 4 magic missile and armor memorized as well as two invisibility and a single...stinking...cloud....

Anyway even when I get ambushed her offensive capabilities shine even at this low level (because of the Ring of Wizardry) although admittedly when she is not casting she is usually running away. So far so good, Imoen has 110 in traps so mines should be a little less deadly this time (I hope)

Diary of Goodnight and the Arctic Dwarves

Goodnight: Lawful Good; Holy Strategist of the Red Knight, Str 20, Dex 16, Con 19, Int 16, Wis 18, Cha 2.
Dawnbringer: Lawful Good; Morninglord of Lathander, Str 20, Dex 16, Con 19, Int 14, Wis 18, Cha 2.
Painbearer : Lawful Good; Painbearer of Ilmater; Str 20, Dex 16, Con 19, Int 17, Wis 18, Cha 2.
Hammer o’ t’ North: Chaotic Good; Battleguard of Tempus; Str 20, Dex 16, Con 19, Int 18, Wis 18, Cha 8.

I was amazed at that last throw. Whilst due to Lord Foreshadow’s Ring, the extra charisma is unimportant, the fact that I threw within 10 points of the absolute maximum was truly amazing.

Note from sub-race mod readme:
ARCTIC DWARF: Arctic dwarves, who call themselves the Inugaakalikurit, are the isolated inhabitants of Faerun's northernmost reaches. Native to mountains at the heart of the Great Glacier and other northerly regions, arctic dwarves are little known to the outside world.
Arctic dwarves are squat and hardy, with blocky bodies, pinched faces, and stubby legs. Their hair is white and skin almost bluish white, but because of their fondness for basking under the bright sun, many of them are sunburned red from head to toe, a condition that causes them no discomfort or other ill effects.
- ADVANTAGES: +2 to Strength, 100% cold resistance, +1 THAC0 vs. orcs, goblins, and bugbears, and +4 to AC vs. giants.
- DISADVANTAGES: -1 to Dexterity and -20% experience modifier
.

In Candlekeep I was most surprised when Jondalar and Eric died when we were practising the use of our weapons. That was a first for me, probably due to the fact that our weapons were magical and the extra strength that the Arctic Dwarf has.

Sanctuary proved useful after we broke into chests, and it was a pleasant surprise when we discovered that Guard o’ t’ North could break into a chest containing a very valuable gem. (Str 20 plus Duhm.) With the sale we were able to buy some cure poison potions and have some gold left over.

After arranging for the burial of Gorion, it was a relief when two dread wolves that attacked us were killed as I had heard that they were quite dangerous. Some gibberlings hurt us more, as we had already used up most of our spells killing the dread wolves. We were however able to heal ourselves without using potions and afterwards we slept successfully near the site of the ambush.

Afterwards I was quickly healed and we set off in the direction of the Friendly Arms Inn.
Again we were attacked by diseased gibberlings and then by wolves. The wolves hurt me badly, so after they had been disposed of, my friends healed me and we continued to the Friendly Arms Inn where we rested.

We killed a number of hobgoblins before continuing on our way. We then helped a widow who was being pestered by a zombie and helped a twelve year old priestess against some evil fishermen. She was just as evil, but in this situation, we felt she had right on her side.

As a result of killing the fishermen, we acquired a flail +1 which is two of our cleric’s favoured weapon and upon Tenya hearing the news we all became level 2 clerics.
We headed south killing ogrillon on the way and upon arriving at Nashkel actually listened to Noober and did some babysitting. Now that WAS a heroic task!!

We then helped find a dog and a cat and helped a dryad before returning to Beregost where we were attacked by spiders. We killed one, the largest with missile weapons as we ran from them. Entering an inn, they followed us, so we ran upstairs where we charmed Algernon into helping us. Sadly he was killed and we had difficulty in escaping, but escape we did, picking up a cloak of his on the way.

We used that cloak to charm a Morninglord a Morningmaster and a Morninglord Guard. All of them succumbed to the deadly poison of the spiders before we managed to kill them. On a positive note, three of us now have good armour as well as +2 warhammers.

We donned the armour and we headed north to the FAI. Charming a guard, I sent him against Tarnesh who killed him. By then Tarnesh had run out of spells and was easy to kill.

We now have good armour and by selling a ring of wizardry which we as clerics are unable to use, and a number of other items, I was able to equip us all with an unbreakable version our favoured weapon.

Heading south we were accosted by Necardian and two henchmen. Two of us were badly injured due to being confused, but we survived and as a result gained an extremely good flail plus some equipment that we could not use. In Beregost we sold the useless equipment and with the proceeds bought dwarven mithril armour. It is excellent, but was so expensive that we are now poor again. Painbearer was delighted to hear that news, but the rest of us are not so happy, though we are all happy to be well equipped.

We then set off in a south-easterly direction and were able to help Melicamp regain his humanity. In the same area we met Bassilus who seriously injured me with Flamestrike before he succumbed to our attack.

Zargal proved to be easy to kill due to the spell command, the second of which caused him to cause no further problems. Fortunately the ghasts which attacked at the same time did not manage to hold any of us, so we defeated them and also some bandits. As a result we are all now level 3 clerics.

Whilst I did not realise the implications when I picked them up or bought them, the extra constitution and wisdom gained from some of the weapons/armour will be most useful.

Mittrek the Human Fighter - Update 5
Traveling with: Joshua (Undead Hunter), Hanna (Monk), Paja (Cleric/Thief)

Mittrek and gang cleared out the 1st area of the Cloakwood without too much trouble. We sided against Aldeth, we don't need any call lightnings thank you.

For the 2nd portion (spiders/ettercaps), Paja used an invisibility potion, borrowed Mittrek's free action ring, and detected traps and ran every where. She failed to detect most of them in time, but she set them off which is what we wanted. Once she finished with that, the quattro then commenced the battling. Most battles were rather lop-sided in favor of the party, however, the ettercaps gave a good showing for themselves. In fact, Hanna was hurt so bad (though she lived), we had her use darts for the rest of the area.

Centeol and her "pets" - we did buff with PfE, bless and chant. Once the battle started, Paja summoned some skeleton allies. Joshua charged the center to hopefully get all the pets attention (which he did). Hanna pretty much out of darts by this point, so she charged into the fracas with her fists. Mittrek as usual did great support with his bow, and the party won the fight without casualty. Hanna brought Chelak's body back to his brother. The sword is rather useless (no one has any skill with 2H sword), but will just keep in our base at the Carnival, just in case someone gets chunked.

For the 3rd Cloakwood, we provoked the shadow druids on purpose, except for the first one by the bridge, because if you kill him you lose 5 rep. Met some vampiric wolves, but they aren't too much trouble as long as they are messing with Joshua. This was clear without much trouble. Hanna did get held once by a shadow druid, but Paja came to her rescue with a wand of heavens shot.

Party getting pretty low on ammo, lots of junk in our inventories too. So probably will head to high hedge to sell/identify, then base to at least drop off the spider's bane, and then attempt to clear the 4th Cloakwood next session. Leveling is much slower now...we might backtrack and fight in areas we have ignored (such as the ogre area NE of Nashkel, also the one N of Gnoll Fortress) for more experience, as Hanna needs 110,000 for her next level. Want to get to get to 161,000 if possible to help us out in BG 2.

In my last game I didn't have anyone skilled in its use, yet it proved invaluable when ambushed by improved spiders.
They cast web!
There was no time to cast freedom from action, so the only character not held was the one carrying the sword. He took them on single handed until the rest of the party escaped from the web. They then used ranged weapons and together defeated the spiders.
I think that those spiders are the most difficult part of SCS.

The Avatars: Chapter 4- The Bandit Camp, Part 1: The Plan

I’m not sure what I expected after we cleared the Nashkel Mines. I wasn’t naive enough to think we’d suddenly live the lives of vaunted heroes. But I also didn’t expect life to suddenly become more difficult. That it did though.

Assassins. First there was Nimbul- a terrifying thief/mage with skills far beyond my own. He was dangerous, but nothing we couldn’t handle. The frightening thing about him was the promise of more. And more there were.

In the wake of Mulahey’s fall we learned that the taint at Nashkel was part of a broader, bolder strategy gripping the whole of the Sword Coast. Bandits encamped in the northeast were raiding each and every source of iron- suppressing trade throughout the region. For the iron of Nashkel to flow, the bandits had to be stopped. Raiding the raiders -upending the encampment- had to be our next objective. We knew this. But so did the assassins.

There were two crews. One had occupied High Hedge, the other Peldvale (*)- cutting us off from our resources, and blocking our route to the Bandit Camp. It was difficult to see a path forward. We convened at the Jovial Juggle to discuss or options. I began by suggesting that we evade the assassins- skipping High Hedge, and then bypassing Peldvale by going north, then east. Krimlor was not impressed:

“You don’t want to do that lassie. That northern route looks fine on your map, but that’s ankheg territory- better to face the assassins than those beasties.”

He was right of course, but the alternatives seemed no better. Fighting two groups of assassins? Taking on one -and then the Bandit Camp- without resupply? We pondered, and pondered. Then -turning the map around- I hesitantly said: “Looking forward, nothing will make sense...”

“So try looking backwards, eh?” Krimlor replied knowingly.

“Exactly: Let’s think about the camp first then work back to how we’ll get there.” “From the bandits at Larswood we’ve learned that the leaders have their own tent- they usually stay in there. Now, if we approach openly, an alarm will sound, and we’ll have to face all the bandits plus their leaders, together: We’ll be overwhelmed.”

“Let’s not do that then...” Pot said abruptly.

“Right...Right...Anyways, what we can do, is send a strike force into the tent to take down the leaders: they’ll have to be invisible in, and then invisible out to avoid setting off the alarm. They’ll do their job, and then they’ll rendezvous with the rest of us for the final assault on the outer camp.”

“How many for the strike force?” asked Grond.

“Pot and Strider both know invisibility. Pot has two level twos and Strider has one: that’s three. There is another Invisibility scroll at High Hedge if I can get that -and memorize that- that’s four.”

“Four, that means six- that means all of us” said Grond. “I have my stealth, Krimlor has his Sanctuary the other four have the Invisibility spells: We can all go.”

“That makes sense...but they’ll see Krimlor in his Sanctuary even if they can’t attack, and they’ll follow: that could be dangerous. Plus, if you pop out of the shadows at the wrong time, then the alarm sounds and that’s it for all of us. It’s three: three -four if I can get the scroll.”

“Well that settles it, missy: We’re going to High Hedge. There’s no way I’m letting you three softies go in there alone.” Krimlor replied.

“It looks that way...But let’s think about the tent first...”  “We can’t know what we’ll face in there-”

“Are you sure we can’t?” said Krimlor wrly. I smiled sarcastically -mockingly- and then moved on: “We can’t know, but we can make some educated guesses...They’ll be a mage, probably...And all these bandits seem to have bows, so they’ll be bows. And someone will have to be able to swing a sword or a halbred-”

“Why a halbred?” asked Krimlor.

“It’s just an example...a guess...ok? Anyways: combined arms. And we’ll probably be outnumbered...So what do we do?”

There was a pause.

“Demolitions,” said BlackStrider- swirling his hand theatrically around the Bandit Camp symbol on the map, “We’ll need demolitions.”

“But the Necklace of Missiles is almost tapped,” noted Grond.

“I have an idea about that,” said BlackStrider.

“The Carnival right...the big tent...” BlackStrider nodded, “The guards there are corrupt. We sell the Necklace of Missiles, then, after it’s charged, steal it back. If we get caught, we just bribe the guards.”

“That’s why you sold the emeralds there eh lassie?” said Krimlor, “and you’ll probably sell my ring there to.”

“No. Actually, he won’t buy your ring. But the shopkeeper at Nashkel will. And I’m glad you brought that up, because that’s exactly what we’re going to have to do. We’re going to need missile weapon defenses. If I can get that scroll, it’s going to be you, Pot, BlackStrider and me in the tent. Pot and I will stay out of it until the bows are out of action, but you and BlackStrider are going to need missile weapon defenses and the amulet, the girdle, and the boots alone aren’t going to cover it. There’s a shop at Ulgoth’s Beard that can provide what we need but we can’t steal from it: We’ll need money- that’s why we’re selling the ring.”

“And just how do you intend to get to Ulgoth’s Beard. Or High Hedge?” Krimlor asked.

“Well...That’s a problem..." I said pensively, pausing to think.  And then, suddenly  -without any warning- Pot vanished: Gone.

"Ok, I've got it: Leave the trip to Ulgoth's Beard to me- me, Pot, and BlackStrider: we’ll take care of it- High Hedge to.”

“Here’s how it’s all going to work. We’ll go to the carnival first. BlackStrider, will sell and then steal the Necklace of Missiles. Then, I’ll sell Krimlor’s ring -or Cassia’s ring -whatever- over in Nashkel.” “We’ll go to the Friendly Arm Inn together, and then Pot, BlackStrider and I will leave the rest of you." "The three of us will go north -invisible- past the ankhegs -scout out a passage to the Bandit Camp that bypasses the Peldvale assassins- and then continue north to Ulgoth‘s Beard. We’ll buy the things we need there, and then we’ll return south -invisible again- pausing only to loot the ankheg lair- before resting on the Lion’s Way. We’ll take the Lion’s Way route to High Hedge, stealth into Thalantyr’s, and then get the Invisibility scroll, the Potion of Fire Resistance -everything we need- without facing the assassins. Once that’s done, we all meet back at the Friendly Arm. Then Krimlor, Pot, BlackStrider and me: we go to the camp to take down the leaders. Later, we rest up - and if we can- all six of return to the camp to clear out the rest. That’s it: That’s the plan.”

Silence swept the room: Nods of approval. Then, abruptly, a voice we hadn’t heard in a while, Cassia:

”A lot of talkie-talk there. I’m just here wondering what we’re waiting for,” she said with a smirk.

Smiles all around: It was time to go.

Best,

A.

(*) Placed here by the SCS Improved Deployment for Parties of Assassins component. I should note also that I have an older version of SCS installed wherein the assassins converge on the PC -whether visible or invisible- from anywhere on the map. With full pre-buffs active, they’re non-trivial. I was seriously worried about them.

The Avatars: Chapter 4- The Bandit Camp, Part 2: The Plan in Action

Long days on the road: Weary. But we’ve accomplished our goals. And after hour upon hour of travel -and nights upon night under the stars- Pot, Blackstrider, and I, have become closer to one another.

First it was the Carnival, where BlackStrider artfully gamed our mark- walking away with a fully charged Necklace of Missiles. Then, north to the Friendly Arm, where -for the first time since leaving Candlekeep- I parted ways with some of my dear friends.
Posted Image

Heading on, Pot, BlackStrider and I, forged a path to the Bandit Camp as planned.
Posted Image

And as we made our way further north, I took the opportunity to talk -really talk- with Pot for the first time in awhile. There was something I had to say to him.

“You know Pot, down in the mines, after that kobold killed you, we had to decide whether to bring you back to the temple, or keep going. And it was me -it was me- who decided...decided you could wait...And I feel kind of-”

“It’s ok: I don’t mind,” Pot interrupted.

“Don’t mind what?”

“Being dead. I don’t mind being dead.”

“Really?..I’ve...I’ve never...”

“It’s not so bad.”

“No?”

“No: It’s not so bad. There’s nothing to worry about: Nothing at all -not even bold -or green -or toothache.”

“Not even toothache?....Well...I guess it really isn’t so bad then...”

I paused, lost in thought. And then, only after a few moments: “I’ll try to get you the daggers ok, Pot?”

“I’d like that very much” he said

We spoke no more: We walked the rest of the way in silence- all the way to Ulgoth’s Beard.

After a night at the inn, we made our purchases. Then it was south again: south to the ankheg lair...
Posted Image

to High Hedge...
Posted Image

and finally -finally- back to our friends.

We'll sleep well tonight. Tomorrow we raid the Bandit Camp.

Best,

A.

Aaargh, Toothache, I wish I was dead

EDIT Chuckle, correct, I see nothing unusual about walking for 16 hours without saying a word :P

I uploaded some piccies, bit of overlap with my previous post, but here's the last of the sirenes. Note Cassia is charmed, and I too completed the entire area with Pot dead. I know ussnorway is familiar with this, so it seems only Alesia finds this unusual.

We then headed inside and killed one of the 3 Flesh golems, then grabbed the loot. I did however come back later and finish the other two.

Pot hit level 5 and earned a level 3 spell, but he only knew dispel, which I should really have given to 'Strider, who's level 6, so casts higher. Anyway I headed to high hedge and bought a second protection from petrification for 'Strider, as well as vampiric touch for when he gets a level 3, skull trap for Pot, & flame arrow for Alesia.

Pot cleared his level 1 spells and memorised 9 PfP, 'Strider memorised another 3, we slept, and headed off to hunt Basilisks. Grond killed two lesser basilisks solo, but the third called a greater and they were moving to melee range, plus I wasn't counting rounds so had no idea when Grond's PfP would expire, so Pot cast on Krimlor, and he intercepted them. Note the rest of the group is attacking the lesser without any protection, but it was at near death. I should really keep Alesia back entirely, you can see I'm not a hardened no-reloader. I thought SCS would make them target players without PfP, but so far they seem as dumb as ever.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #6 The Trip to the Coast):
(Areas explored: Shipwreck's Coast, Lighthouse, Archaeological Site.)

With our new equipment we felt ourselfs confident enough to make some Sirines hunt. At Shipwreck's Coast we ran into a horde of Ogres, Half-Ogres and Ogrillons who were eager to crush us to goo but were fried by the Scorcher instead. Cassia ripped some Sirines and we met Shoal the Nereid who claimed to being "lost" and asked for our help to find her way. Pot, always ready to help Damsel in Distress (we all remember how he saved Alesia recently by the cost of his life), couldn't stand aside but Nereid's kiss is quite deadly... *You need to be more cautious with women, Pot* noted Cassia whilst healing his wounds (both physical and emotional). Me added some healing as well and just in time as Ogre Mage Droth who came to investigate the goings-on shook off our Horror + Silence spells and hit Pot with three Magic Missiles (so without the healing Pot would be dead again). We unloaded all our heavy stuff on him (Wand of Heavens, Scorcher, Wand of Fire, Call Lightning, Monster Summoning alone with hail of arrows) and Alesia claimed the killing shot.

Krimlor gained another Cleric level and now able to Animate Dead so Cassia with Skellies support eliminated Sirines in the Lighthouse area and Krimlor, wearing Girdle of Bluntness and Potion of Absorption, entered Flesh Golem Cave. The very first Golem immediately hit him with critical so he ran outside and Alesia threw him her Gauntlets of Dexterity. With the support of Grond and me firing Arrows +1 the remaining Golems were eliminated quickly.

Archaeological Site. No casualties here but out of Alesia's curiosity (she could not resist not to look into the tomb and take the Idol) we were forced to fight a Doomsayer. But with Skellies distraction he fell under the hail of Magic Missiles.

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Helping insane Captain Brage was our free ticket back to Nashkel where we sold our hard earned loot and now are pondering our next move in local tavern.

Current state:

BlackStrider: Blade(6), 203 kills (Doomsayer);
Alesia The Curious: Mage(4)/Thief(5), 75 kills (Droth);
Grond The Pathfinder: Archer(5), 294 kills (Flesh Golem);
Cassia The Furious: Shapeshifter(6), 217 kills (Sirine);
Krimlor: Fighter(4)/Cleric(5), 180 kills (Revenant);
Pot The Selfless: Mage(5), 13 kills (Cave Bear), 4 death (1 to Shoal).

to be continued...

I hope you are enjoying my characterization of Pot. He's only slightly based on you of course. The nuttiness comes from the portait really: the guy in the picture seems proper but unhinged to me.

So you know, Pot's statements are intended to make sense if you think about them. "Bold" refers to the assassins and by association humanity, "green" the ankhegs and hence nature. "Toothache" represents problems of the self and also alludes to Allen Ginsberg's Kaddish for Naomi in which he depicts death as a form of release from earthly torment.

"That’s good! That leaves it open for no regret— no fear radiators, lacklove, torture even toothache in the end—"

I can of course change Pot if he bothers you. :)

Beats talking for 16 hours... =]

Cheers,

A.

There is a component specifically for basilisks (Smarter Basilisks). Do you have that installed?

Grond0/Gate70 multiplayer attempt 11: Sati (Grond0, protaganist) and Vurro (Gate70).

The duo avoided the Undercity party and went straight into the temple for the final confontation.  Sati shot Sarevok from the shadows, pulling him out into combat on his own.   That should have made things easy, but Sati chose to step on top of a lightning trap taking her worryingly low on HPs.  However, she quickly borrowed boots of speed from Vurro and dispelled Sarevok's haste to get freedom to move around.  Meanwhile Vurro did a spot of buffing and moved in to tank Sarevok.  He was pretty successful at that, doing the majority of the damage as Sarevok was rapidly required to surrender.

Mittrek the Human Fighter - Update 6
Traveling with: Joshua (Undead Hunter), Hanna (Monk), Paja (Cleric/Thief)
Party Experience: About 80,000 each

The quattro worked on clearing out the 4th Cloakwood area out. No trouble here from any enemy. We left the Wyvern mound alone, mainly so that if Paja gets chunked, recruiting Coran would be possible then. The hamadryad was not underestimated, however, Joshua with greenstone amulet charge was pretty much invincible against her.

We cleared out the 5th area, and then was time to deal wtih Drassus. My favorite tactic is web plus skeletons or fireball from out of sight. The first wasn't an option, and the latter seemed too cheap this go around. So instead we did this: We did have three skeleton friends as distractions...Joshua kept Drassus and the other melee busy. Hanna charged one of the mages who failed to get a mirror image up with her fists (she was stealthed), Mittrek targeted the same mage with arrows (he gets 3 arrow attacks per round now), and Paja threw a silence toward the mages, and then assisted with her sling. The first mage died almost instantly once Hanna made contact, the trio concentrated fire on the other mage, while Joshua and the skeletons were still playing with Drassus and his buddy. Despite his considerable mirror images, the other mage got hit a few times even so and went down. Drassus had no chance of victory now, he still having a heck of time even connecting with Joshua (Joshua is -6 AC and full plate, and girdle of bluntness). Everyone concentrated fire and it was over.

The haste boots went to Joshua...now Joshua can keep up with the quick Hanna. After looting was time to identify and sell again (we did this like 5 times while clearing out the Cloakwood Mine surface/interior). Most ambushes were really smooth...which were basically everyone but Hanna tanks an enemy, Hanna would assist Paja and Paja would use at least one wand of heaven charge. This worked in every ambush except one..a two wyvern ambush. While much later Hanna will be strong against poison enemies, that isn't now...she was very close to death but managed to gulp an antidote at the last second, as you can see from the screenshot:

We made it to HIgh Hedge, identify/sell and return. We repeat this process several times. Battles in the Mine of note:
* Heirashan and her goons - poor execution here. I intended to use a potion of magic blocking to protection Joshua from Heirashan's lightning bolt, but there wasn't enough time to pause and he took the full blow, dropping him 50% health. She even hit him again....now his health is too low, so instead needs to gulp a heal potion. Both Mittrek (using Bhaal power) and Paja move up to heal Joshua. Fortunately the lightning bolt not only didn't hit the party, but returned to Heirashan's men and took out 3 guards. The party of course concentrated fire on Heirashan and she fell, was smooth sailing after that.
* 3rd level entrance...the mass of enemies were slain very fast, but that may be partly due to magical ammo being used by both Mittrek and Paja. The party is just flush with gold, so we saw no reason not to use magical ammo, the ammo helps in the ambushes in any case.
* Mage (Natasha I think) with goblin buddies - much smoother execution this time, Joshua did use a potion of magic blocking, the party assisted with ranged fire from the doorway, and was a clean mop-up
* Ogre Mage - used potion of magic shielding this time and PfE. While Mittrek assisted with ranged support, Joshua was laying into the Ogre Mage just fine.

Davaeorn:
Hanna and Mittrek stayed out of the way. Joshua buffed to the gills, most important probably being protection from fire and potion of magic protection and potion of invulnerability...Paja de-trapped the 4 traps, though Davaeorn saw her on the last trap (we have no invisibility this time around)...she ran back to Mittrek, while Joshua charged and soloed Daveorn. Davaeorn got off a bunch of dimension doors and a fireball, but that was about it. Everything else got resisted. Davaeorn also got a bit unlucky, as Joshua got a number of hits on Davaeorn even though Daveorn had mirror images up...Davaeorn is slain. The party loots up and heads out.

General Plan: Even though the city of Baldur's Gate is now open, the party is going to clear out more areas in the Sword Coast. Corey_Russell wants to get as much experience as he can to try to give the party a boost in BG 2.
