Btw. Quick note on The Avatars posts. I've been limiting tactical detail of late in the interest of story flow. If people prefer, I can rebalance and include more mechanics: Just let me know.

Btw II. In my experience, un-petrified characters respond sometimes but not others. I haven't noticed anything that explains the variation. To my mind, if he doesn't respond, this can be safely treated as a bug with Control-Q as an appropriate remedy.

EDIT: Just noted Gate's comment: Agreed. :)

Fyi I don’t have any cheats installed so Control-Q is out but Grond has been reanimated into the group by the import from the auto-save method (after paying 500g for a scroll of course)... in effect losing only the experience from the boss battle which is kosher as far as I’m concerned.

@Alesia_BH, Tell us a story please, Miss!
p.s. Thanks for the fast feedback and Stay tuned.

Just a quick note - Mittrek and gang have defeated Molkar and his fellow assassins. Acid arrows and wand of heavens (fully charged - 100 charges) was devastating to his casters - once they went down was easy-peasy to mop up the melee guys.

We made it to Ulcaster..ignored the surface pretty much, other than Ulcharyd of course...interior wasn't any problem, Joshua is a great tank and the rest of the party does good damage support.

We also paid a short visit to Durlag's Tower (surface) and dealt with two battle horrors. Party is now about 93k experience...Decided to save here.

Corey_Russell is participating in the Oregon State Chess Championship this week-end, so won't be able to resume his run until Monday. Good luck to the rest of you guys (and gals).

Alphabet challenge
B = bandits
In which our stalwarts discover the virtues of a spare suit of armour

The second chapter of BG1 - and the second part of this challenge - runs from leaving Candlekeep until arriving at Nashkel.   I considered posting on the battle with Tarnesh, but decided a bandit ambush would be more fun.  As a result I actually did rather more travelling than I needed to until an ambush eventually triggered.

By this time Ego was level 2/3 and Alter 2/2.  Both also have helmets, so are much less vulnerable than single class characters like mages or thieves, and I decided they should definitely stand and fight.  However, I wanted to load the dice a bit more in their favour, so both were carrying spare sets of plate armour.  Taking advantage of the autopause on enemy sight, as soon as the ambush triggered they donned their equipment.
Posted Image

The bandits now needed a critical in order to hit the duo. while they themselves were easy meat for characters with high dexterity.  As a result it wasn't long before the last of the bandits were finished off - Alter & Ego had suffered just one hit each, so no need for any healing during the battle.

Proverb for the day:

Ru'In Atta Update

Imoen managed to detect most of the traps in the Nashkel mines, though the one she missed drove her mad and since Dynaheir had made her invisible in the previous battle to save her life we could do nothing but follow and wait until the madnes subsided.
Mulahey:Sent Xan to meet us later, Ajantis protected most everyone from evil, Dynahier attempted to blind Mulahey while Minsc flew into a rage and kept the minions busy. Branwen summoned a mighty hammer and her and Ru'in tore Mulahey a new one while Dynahier pelted him with MMs. Only difficult thing was keeping everyone away from minsc after he was done mopping the floor with the minions.
Zeela, Lamalha, Maneira:Branwen cast silence the moment we saw them start chanting, unfortunately Ru'in got silenced as well. She tanked with Minsc and Branwen (Ajantis broke his sword in the mines) and chugged healing potions to keep her out of the red while Dynaheir, Ajantis and Imoen fired on them from afar. Afterward the party rested and Ru'in had another dream, gaining her another heal light wounds spell per day.
Revenant:Ajantis protected from evil outside the tomb, buffed Ru'in with barkskin as well and blessed the party just to be safe. Imoen ended up getting held but the revenat was too busy dodging minsc, ajantis and ru'ins blows to deal her damage.
Green Slime: was able to take one out using a scroll but didn't have enough magic left after revnant to take the other two out. retreated and left for later.
Nimbul:Another close call. He managed to cast horror and send everyone but Imoen and Dynahier into a tizzy. Dynahier cast invisibility on Ru'in while Imoen fired her +1 bow. Both had to chug a few potions but eventually fear wore off and the crew decended on him quite violently.
Took the mysterious vile to High hedge and the ore to the blacksmith next door, also sold a few Ankheg shells and bandit scalps.
Shoal: Her reputation preceded her, shot her on sight before she could even speak.
Sirines: walked up on them and they immidiately started to cast. Branwen silenced them while Dynahier cast stinking cloud. They had charmed two wolves as well which were sent in to attack but got caught in the cloud as well. luckily it worked though and the group took them out with arrows from afar. A few times antidotes were chugged as a result of a sirine wakeing up momentarily.
Melicamp:Did not survive the transformation

Current Location:Staring in shock at a dead chicken in High Hedge

Ru'in Atta, R5, 36 HPs, 357 kills (Shoal the Nereid)
Imoen, Thief 6, 34 HPs, 96 kills (Sirine)
Jahiera, F3/D3, 20 HPs, 24 kills (Ghast), 1 Death ( by Hobgoblin Elite)
Khalid, F3, 27 HPs, 15 kills (Zordral), 1 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf)
Ajantis, Paladin 5, 64 HPs, 41 kills (Greywolf), 3 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf, Hobgoblin Elite, Minsc)
Branwen, Cleric 5, 36 HPs, 34 Kills (Cave Bear)
Minsc, R5, 39 HPs, 135 Kills (Revenant), 1 Death (Hobgoblin Elite)
Dynaheir, Invoker 5, 27 HPs, 9 Kills (Carrion Crawler)

Currently planning on clearing areas south of Beregost I have yet to explore. ending eventually with those green Slimes I left running around.

The Avatars: Interlude II- The Joy of Mushrooms

Nature. It has meant different things to different peoples over the years. To some, it is a home, a mother, to others, a fallen wilderness, unfit for humanity- a place of dangers and shadows. Here, now, in the Cloakwood -and in the wake of my episode at the Bandit Camp- I see both.

Competition: ruthless, violent. It is everywhere- even in the trees: The weaker are strangled, starved -even poisoned- before going to seed- the soil of the majestic enriched by the flesh of the dead. That is the way of things: For every victory there must be defeat, for every act of creation there must be destruction. If this is the logic of life -of humanity- it can not be denied. But should it be embraced? Or is there more nobility in the gentle act of withering away? Uncertain, I somehow think Cassia might be able to help me. And so I've decided to speak.

***

“You seem at peace Cassia.”

“Yeah, I am. I grew up in places like this- I’ve always connected with places like this.”

“But I don’t just mean here: Everywhere. Even when we are in dungeons, wading through horrors, you seem content- even joyful.”

“Well, why wouldn’t I be? We are alive and vigorous- surrounded by life and vigor. There’s beauty everywhere. Joy is the only feeling that makes sense- the rest is just distraction.”

“But there is so much horror: poverty, tatters, pain. And death: so much death. We’re often the cause of it."

To my surprise, Cassia laughed. Laughed and then said: “The problem is that you don’t see. You see but not true. When you look at the world you see right and wrong, good and evil. These are abstractions- made up in your head. It isn’t the world that troubles you: It’s your abstractions.”

Her answer shocked me. At first I was at a loss, but then, hesitantly, I said: “But...But don’t we need abstractions -values- to guide us?”

Again Cassia laughed, “Well, maybe if you spent more time in places like this, you wouldn’t need a guide: You’d just see- like I do.” “Come on. I’m starved: Let’s find some mushrooms.”

And with those words, her pace quickened. I tried to keep up, but I fell behind. And then, softly, vaguely out of her range I said:

“Ok...But I’m not hungry.”

The Avatars: Chapter 5- The Cloakwood Mines, Part 1

We walked. Endlessly. Out of sight. Day after day, night after night- passing spiders and bears, druids and wyverns. It was terrifying, humbling. And beautiful.

Eventually the forest gave way- yielding again to civilization. Or at least the footprint of civilization: A mine- bustling, tireless, burrowing deep- coughing smoke. It was comforting, strangely. But what does it mean that I find comfort in such things- that I depend on such things? And why is it that the darkest dangers, are found within their bowels?

As the trees grew thinner and thinner, we saw a palisade. And as we passed within its confines we saw men- men who meant us harm. Quietly, in the shadows, we made our plans.

There were two mages -manifestly powerful- flanked by a pair of stout warriors- one with a flail, the other with throwing axes. To succeed we would need to end the wizards quickly and then overwhelm the warriors with our numbers. But how?

Once again, Krimlor would be in the thick of the action- he would be the one that shielded us. Running a Potion of Hill Giant Strength, a Potion of Fire Resistance, a Potion of Mirroreyes, Resist/Fire Cold, Remove Fear, Chant, and the Greenstone Amulet, he -invisible- would approach the more fearsome mage with a Potion of Firebreath in hand. The rest of us, meanwhile -also invisible- would position ourselves in a semi-circle around him. We would then break invisibility simultaneously: Krimlor with his Potion of Firebreath, Grond with the Necklace of Missiles, BlackStrider with the Wand of Fire, Pot with the Wand of Paralyzation, Cassia with the Wand of the Heavens, and I with the Wand of Frost- seeking to annihilate the two mages before they could harm us: The warriors would fall soon after. Or so we hoped: Our plan worked but the battle was more harrowing than we might have imagined.

Krimlor took his position -as did the rest of us. He quaffed his potion, and incinerated the first mage.
Posted Image

Our wand volley followed. But shockingly, the second mage somehow survived, erecting his buffs. It would take a second round of wand blasts to finish him. And just before my Wand of Frost pulse reached him, he released a single spell- charming BlackStrider.
Posted Image

Suddenly the second part of our plan was undermined- we had hoped to rely on numbers to defeat our more powerful foes, but with BlackStrider charmed -and with the nearby guards called to action- we were the ones outnumbered. We struggled to regain our footing -staying on the move- healing our wounds. The battle couldn't continue like this: We would be worn down.
Posted Image

Then, cleverly, Cassia charmed BlackStrider- returning him to our side.
Posted Image

The tide had turned: It was time for us to stop running and make our stand. That we did. Genthore first.
Posted Image

He survived the opening volley, but not the second. We now held the advantage. But with the leader, Drasus, still on his feet, victory remained uncertain. Split into two teams, with BlackStrider facing one guard supported by Grond, Pot, and myself and Krimlor -now running a Potion of Absorption- facing Drasus and the second guard supported by Cassia, we sought to end the fray.
Posted Image

BlackStrider's guard fell first.
Posted Image

And then we all converged on the now isolated Drasus.
Posted Image

After a last defiant blow that nearly ended Krimlor, Drasus finally fell- singed by Pot's Scorcher and impaled by Grond's arrow.
Posted Image

It was a memorable battle -epic to us. And in the thick of it, it seemed all the world hinged on our every action. But the thing I'll remember most -the thing I'll never forget- is the sounds that followed fray- the indifferent chirping of crickets and the whistling of the winds through the palisade gate: they would have sounded the same whether we had survived or fallen.

Best,

A.

Thanks Alesia! I will need it. It's been a years since I played in a such as strong tournament (4 masters and 6 experts). I've been playing every week at the Medford Chess Club for quite a while now, hopefully that practice will pay off. Only time will tell, as they say...

Alphabet challenge
C = commerce
In which our doughty travellers go shopping.

The third chapter of BG1 - and the third part of this challenge - runs from arriving at Nashkel to defeating Mulahey in the Nashkel mine.

The amount of adventuring you do in this chapter is very variable.  I decided my trigger for confronting Mulahey should be having been shopping at Ulgoth's Beard (mainly in order to have the greenstone amulet available).  As usual, before buying anything significant, I aimed to get reputation up to 20; that meant doing the majority of the encounters on the map.  The only one in this phase that wasn't totally controlled was quite early on against Borda.  During that, Ego had to use the potion of clarity from Candlekeep to help defend against spells, while Alter almost got killed by a couple of groups of summoned monsters.  Just when I thought Borda was out of spells and the danger was over he dug into his pack and produced a couple of potions of invisibility - despite being the protagonist Ego, who had easily the most HPs, put himself forward as the backstab victim (and in fact survived those comfortably).

While at Ulgoth's Beard Ego used potions of master thievery from Erdane at Durlag's Tower to steal the free action ring from Dushai and a number of scrolls from Shangalar.
Posted Image

Arriving at the mine Ego was level 4/5 and Alter 4/4.  Most of the mine was done with Ego sneaking and sniping, while Alter had his plate armour on and provided a focus for large groups of kobolds.  Alter did strip down once to put a web up that trapped the kobold shaman and chieftain.

Arriving at Mulahey's cave Ego started killing kobold elites while waiting for Mulahey to appear.  When he did Alter attempted to use a wand scorcher to disrupt Mulahey and kill most of his allies, but for some reason it wouldn't trigger (Alter hadn't done anything since arriving in the cave).  Quickly, before Mulahey's spell could land, the duo ran out of the cave.

Only Mulahey followed, leaving himself very exposed.  He saved against 2 of the kobold chieftain's poison arrows, but lost a spell in the process.  The third arrow's poison took effect and another of his spells failed.  He did, however, give himself a slim chance by running back to his allies in the cave when nearly dead.
Posted Image

The duo followed him in and this time the scorcher triggered properly.  Mulahey somehow survived the first round of damage and got a hold person off to disable Alter, but expired from the second scorcher dose.
Posted Image

Ego killed one stray kobold missed by the scorcher and then waited for Alter to recover before hunting down the last couple of kobold elites hiding round the corner.

My last post left me with Alesia & Grond standing over Kahrk's corpse, holding the entire group's gear. Alesia was just about on full health, Grond was pretty hurt, but at least both can stealth. So, leaving the heavier gear, they scouted to the firewine entrance, to see if they could find a container inside. After some fighting, and Grond catching a trap, they decided to retreat. Alesia stood on the bridge, and Grond threw the heavy gear up from the Kahrk area. They then took turns to walk the stuff to the edge of the map, and finally they only had to dump a small amount of loot.

We headed to Nashkel, ressurected everyone, had a couple of drinks, and resolved to be more careful. We also decided we were ready for the Nashkel mines.

Posted Image

We were. Up until the final fight. Unfortunately the kobold archers interrupted both Pot's web, his fear, and Alesia's stinking cloud. This left all the kobolds free to attack with impunity. At least Krimlor's turn undead distracted the skellies. Mulaney himself fell without any trouble at all, but the sheer number of enemies caused me to panic and use the wand of lightning. This went badly, for a start it didn't go where I aimed it, it seems to align to some invisible grid, so instead of going NNE, it went straight north, and killed Cassia. You should also note that 'Strider is in mortal danger, but I didn't until he died from an overdose of arrows.

So, back to Nashkel for some more resurrections, a short and uneventful fight against Nimbul, then back to the mine exit to be surprised by the amazon attack. I now have to decide if we're ready to take out the owner of Pot's dagger yet.

Near Restenford We found the room in the sewers where the map is. However, with a maximum strength of 23, we were not able to enter it. Neither with that strength could we enter the lighthouse. Fabio had disappeared from the inn, so we could not enlist him. (I didn’t want to enlist him anyway as I am trying to play the game with four clerics only.) I decided that the only way of progressing and getting back to the Sword Coast was to Ctrl Q Telvar, that mage that I met in the Reddy Forest. Once that was open, we had the hand and the rest fell into place and we could return to the Sword Coast.
I believe that the disappearance of Fabio in Restenford is a bug and so felt justified in using Ctrl Q. Without doing something like that, the party would be stuck there for eternity.
This is part of the Secret of Bonehill mod. Can anyone confirm that Fabio’s disappearance is in fact a bug?

Thanks Gate.

Basically it comes down to buffs lists. Buff lists are crucial from a tactical standpoint, but they are pretty awkward to work into a narrative.

Going forward, I'll just assume that people can read the buffs off the portraits. If anyone has any questions, they can ask.

D = discretion
In which our courageous wanderers decide they've shown enough valour for a while.

The fourth chapter of BG1 - and the fourth part of this challenge - runs from leaving the Nashkel mine to opening up the Cloakwood.  Having done so many encounters in the previous chapter I thought I would just aim to clear one more area before going to the bandit camp.  Admittedly that was the basilisk area, which has rather more XP than most others!

As a warm-up both Nimbul and Tranzig became backstab victims.  After the latter SCS sprang a nasty surprise as someone was waiting outside the inn.  With the green amulet available I decided to take them on and don't think Ego was ever in danger (though Alter was).  In the event the battle was without friendly victims, but unfortunately not without neutral ones.  Alter used his highest damage option of a wand scorcher, but in this case Morvin decided to go for a wander after being hit and mowed down 2 peasants and the bartender - I really should have bought that axe +1 for Alter before this.  I could say I now subscribe to Alesia's contention that reputation doesn't matter, but having paid up thousands in donations at the temple I can't really claim that!

At the basilisk area backstabs ruled.  They were very effective - one-shotting most of the basilisks (basilisks are coded as initially having missile weapons equipped so Ego got the basic +4 bonus multiplied by 3).

On to the bandit camp with Ego at level 5/6 and Alter 5/5.  Alter didn't know invisibility, but did have the ring of invisibility from Ulgoth's Beard.  That allowed him to sneak into the main tent with Ego.  Inside Ego rapidly moved to the back of the tent (out of sight of Raemon) before his stealth broke.

Alter then set about making use of his 10 memorized blindness spells.  That took care of everyone except Raemon, 1 black talon and 1 hobgoblin elite.  He then followed that up with 2 webs in a severe case of overkill.
Posted Image
I didn't worry about killing the enemies off in the right order so the black talon did manage to get 1 arrow off at Alter, but the tent was sanitised shortly after that.

Before leaving the area I wanted to collect Taugosz' armour.  Most of the bandits have a follow script, so once the duo showed themselves they had to conduct a running fight, including a couple of uses of the wand of fire, until Taugosz fell.

Ru'in Atta Update Final
Bought Ru'in a +1 Composite bow in Beregost and went to "meet" tranzig. Ajantis detected evil when we entered so the party buffed before talking to him and then chunked him pretty quickly.
Ulcaster: Ajantis took a few too many hits from Icharyd and wound up dead. and Branwen fell to a poisonous Mustard Jelly in the basement below. The rest of the dungeon was uneventful, Imoen nearly died by missing a trap near the end. Upon asension they were greeted by Ghasts and Kobald archers that proved to be more trouble than expected. Imoen got held and fell to a Kobald's arrow.
Gullykin:Silence did nothing against Lendarn. He managed to confuse the party and send a few lightning bolts killing Ru'in in the process.

Ru'in Atta, R5, 27047 EXP, 36 HPs, 406 kills (Shoal the Nereid)
Imoen, Thief 6, 25809 EXP, 34 HPs, 105 kills (Sirine), 1 Death (Kolbald Arrow while held)
Ajantis, Paladin 5, 23555 EXP, 37 HPs, 88 kills (Greywolf), 4 Death (Held by Vampiric Wolf, Hobgoblin Elite, Minsc,Icharyd)
Branwen, Cleric 5, 19571 EXP, 36 HPs, 40 Kills (Cave Bear), 1 Death (Mustard Jelly)
Minsc, R5, 26709 EXP,39 HPs, 169 Kills (Revenant), 1 Death (Hobgoblin Elite)
Dynaheir, Invoker 5, 26816 EXP, 27 HPs, 19 Kills (Carrion Crawler)

Thanks Grond0. Was a good run and I learned a lot. I've reinstalled and have added some quests, the NPC project banters, some PnP tweaks, Rogue rebalancing and SCS (just better AI and some tweaks, noting too drastic: Those mages are nasty enough as it is.)

I'm going to have a run though and see if I can't finish a limited reload challenge game. I'll post over in that forum once I get a character running.

Quick question, I took the level cap out in my most recent install (Post Ru'in Atta) Does that exclude me from the No reload challenge. I was thinking of playing no reload and see how far I could get and then if unsuccessful port over to limited reload.

Grond0/Gate70 multiplayer attempt 12: Khrang (Grond0, protaganist) and Khrog (Gate70). Initial update.

We're back to the combination of barbarian and monk used in attempt 10 to see if this time we can get them far enough to demonstrate their potential.

Two sessions today have made a big dent in BG1 and the duo have just arrived in the city for the first time.  The omens looked good when Khrog's first two stunning attempts (a hobgoblin and Tarnesh) both worked and most of the encounters since then have been fairly straightforward.  Khrang has 18(00) strength, which helps him do a lot of damage with his dual-wielded magic hammers, while Khrog acts as the scout and normally joins in attacks once opponents are fixated on Khrang; his stuns have also claimed a number of high-profile victims, such as the mage Kysus and Taugosz Khosann.

There have been 2 deaths for Khrog so far:
- the first occurred when Drizzt failed to fulfil his duty to kill gnolls.  In running round evading them Khrog and Khrang managed to bring several other groups of enemies into play and eventually Khrog failed to notice he was running into a bear's claws.
- the second was the result of concerns about Hareishan in the Cloakwood Mine.  Khrog tried to lead guards away from the exit staircase, but failed to hide twice and got trapped.  Khrang didn't come to help to start with in case Hareishan arrived to join the guards and his belated entrance was only in time to see his comrade fall.

Khrang's relative vulnerability to being damaged has been exposed a couple of times.  Here a single volley by a line of ankhegs had him reeling.  Khrog attacked one of them to try and draw fire onto himself and was not quite quick enough to run away - a critical hit would have probably killed him if he had not saved against the acid damage.  Before rushing Daveorn with a potion of magic blocking Khrang wanted to deal with the menace of the battle horrors.  Despite pulling them back singly Khrang took considerable damage from each, going through at least a dozen healing potions in the process.

Here are their current character records - Khrang has almost exactly average HPs, but Khrog is a bit below par so far:
Posted Image
Posted Image

Khrang, barbarian 6. 232 kills.
Khrog, monk 7. 76 kills.

Links to the ends of our previous multiplayer attempts:
1 Nawgrim and Peer. Charname stupidly killed by trapped container in Brynnlaw
2 Nadir and Kaxir. Companion laughably chunked by Spellhold greater mummy while in inventory!
3 Berserker and Cavalier. No link, berserker caught by 15hp rage expiry after Mirianne's ogres defeated.
4 Boor and Perry. Thaxxy chunks companion then charname
