You can certainly carry on with a no-reload without an XP cap. As with other mod changes the general rule is just to let people know what you've done. Have fun!Clarke_W wrote...
Quick question, I took the level cap out in my most recent install (Post Ru'in Atta) Does that exclude me from the No reload challenge. I was thinking of playing no reload and see how far I could get and then if unsuccessful port over to limited reload.

I'm still planning on joining you all, but I'm taking my time getting my rig set up. A lot seems to have changed in the last 6 years as far as mods and whatnot. If I get this patchwork to run at all, while leaving me even the smallest chance of survival, I'll count that as success number 1. (I have an unfortunate attraction to tragedies, therefore I install too many difficulty upgrades. Last time I tried this, I had a hard time even getting to the FAI.)
EDIT: Clarke, I'm happy to have you participating, regardless of whether you have an XP cap or not. Go CHARNAME!

Thanks for the reminder. However I could not get there from Restenford. I will remember to take that potion with me in future runs though just in case something similar happens.
The obvious ways of opening the door are with a mage, thief, fighter or bard. None of them in my party!
I thought that an Arctic Dwarf with full strength plus Duhm would be sufficient for all locks. Sadly not.

The Ankheg were highly susceptible to command spells and were therefore easy meat for a group of clerics.
I fought the basilisks and Medusae single handed as I haven’t got many protection from petrification scrolls. To ensure that it lasted long enough, I used two potions of oil of speed. I also had to use a potion of superior healing.
Only Mutamin and the Medusae were a problem, but brute strength won the day. I did have all the best equipment before setting out, as I felt that my party should be safe so long as they stayed put. I was right.
We then went to Larswood, and upon seeing a bandit, retreated so that he and his friends followed me. We then used Holy Smite followed by a melee attack. The result of the withdrawal was that I was able to pick up the spoils of war before meeting their leader. He took us to see Tazok who proceeded to attack us. When he had been badly hurt, he decided to let us join his party, but I wanted him dead so I cast speed, we attacked again whereupon he died. There was then an intense battle with his followers, but by using the attributes of my party wisely,
we defeated them all. Guard o’ the North summoned woodland beings; all of us use “Holy Smite”. Painbearer cast “silence” which neutralised the spell casters. I was the tank and was also silenced, but as I was already buffed, that was no problem.
I realised afterwards that I should also have used my helm of mind warding to get true sight, but in the heat of the battle, that item had been forgotten. Due to the helms that we have gained, the entire party is now protected against being charmed, but we can still get “confused”. Since I am supposedly protected from mind spells, that confuses me somewhat!!
We use those helms as a matter of course rather than use helms of defence and the like, as mind spells are by far the more dangerous.
As we left the bandit tent, we were attacked by Molkar and his thugs. We hurried back inside hoping that they would not follow, but they did, so we went outside again. Two of his minions stayed inside and so we won the battle easily. Going back inside I was pleased that I had thought to use my helm of mind warding as the thieves there were visible and hence were easily defeated.
We will now have to head for the Cloakwood Mines. This concerns me somewhat as we have little protection from web. We can cast freedom of action, but the spell is far too slow to cast! The improved spiders can hold you before you cast the spell.
Continued
The spiders did indeed prove difficult. We cast freedom of action at one stage, but the spell ran out before all the spiders were killed. Only Dawnbringer was still able to fight. He did however kill the last two spiders, not before Painbearer was killed however. The rest of us finished off the rest of the spiders inside the nest, but left Centeol alive. We will see if we can solve her problems rather than just kill her. Whilst she is certainly evil, she probably does not deserve the fate that Irenicus gave her.
We returned to the friendly Arms Inn to raise Painbearer. Sadly we were attacked by some misguided good guys whom we were forced to kill. After raising Painbearer we went to the Cloakwood mines. There yet more powerful enemies met us. We did them serious harm before they cast spells such as Malaison, Chaos, and Power Word Sleep. Only I was left to fight at one stage, but by judicious use of healing potions, I was able to fight and even kill some of them whilst awaiting reinforcements.
We then went to the mines at Cloakwood. We were attacked by mages, a cleric and a fighter. We were doing well until chaos was cast and it was left up to me to carry on the fight alone. I dealt with the mages first. Then when the others regained their senses we finished of the others including some Black Talon Elite.
We quickly cleared the top level of the mine, ensuring a clear path if we needed to return. Then, when we went down a level, we were attacked by hordes of fighters, Black Talon, all aided by a mage. Again chaos was the worst problem, and I had difficulty fighting through the bodies to attack the mage. Even after the mage had fallen, some of the remaining guards remained a problem until “holy smite” was cast. Some ghasts were also killed with that spell. Upon meeting up with Yeslick, we sent him armed to The Friendly Arms Inn. We felt that he had endured enough already and probably would not appreciate seeing what had been done to his beloved home. We gave gold to some slaves to allow them to escape and then went down to the next level.
There whilst fighting a horde of hobgoblins, we were attacked by a mage. This was bad enough as she cast web and one of our party was held and then an ogre mage joined in the fight. The rest of us ran. We then cast freedom of action and rejoined the fray.
We were lucky. The ogre mage was also held and the mage cast ice cone, to which our held party member was immune.
The rest of us were out of range.
We attacked and stinking cloud was cast. We were not affected and killed her. because the ogre mage was held, he died quickly.

I'll be so glad when I get Chaotic Commands.
I hope that at least one of my party can use that spell!
I'm not that familiar with Clerical remix either!
EDIT
Daveorn was easy due to the party having freedom of action. He used web and held the battle horrors!!
I had previously wiped out the Black Talon Elite with Wand of Missiles.
Three of my clerics have gone up a level. No more levels before the experience cap!
No chaotic commands yet!!
Final battle could therefore be difficult.

E = experience
In which our weary itinerants realise they've learnt all they can.
The fifth chapter of BG1 - and the fifth part of this challenge - runs from leaving the bandit camp to killing Daveorn. Before starting the Cloakwood I thought I would complete all the non-TotSC areas. In the course of that had fun with the aTweaks sirenes and Nereids. Alter took another one for the team (his second death) when Shoal insisted on a kiss; he thought he would be rewarded for his sacrifice with the helm of defense, but Ego pinched it!
The Firewine Maze was a pain as usual, with a real danger at the end of it - this was Lendarn's 4th fifth level spell and a nasty one. He also had loads of magic missiles, but Alter's shield protected him from those (though, surprisingly, not the ones delivered through a sequencer).
Kahrk was the last encounter before the Cloakwood and another hard one - Alter getting through 6 of the 8 charges of wand of monster summoning among other resources used. Aldeth refused any aid from such disreputable adventurers, but a few ettercaps (coming to investigate the noise of spiders dying) in the second area still got Ego to his level cap of 7/8 - Alter was already at his cap of 7/7.
Skipped quickly through the remainder of the Cloakwood to get to the mine. There Ego set traps and lured Drasus onto them with stealth shots. Then used invisibility & stealth to get down to Daveorn. There Ego killed the first guard with a couple of backstabs then disarmed the traps from stealth.
A stealth shot activated Daveorn and he came down towards the exit with his horrible companions. Ego shot him again and then hurriedly took the stairs without Daveorn noticing. The second time Daveorn's buffs fired and one of the horrors came up the stairs. However, separated from its master it doesn't know what to do and stood there to be killed. One more shot and Daveorn this time came up the stairs. However, Ego was already in stealth and could thus go back down with Alter to kill the horror (also now standing helplessly, though Ego used backstabs on it). A series of stealth shots followed, though it took 10 of them to score his first hit! Daveorn noticed enough to follow him downstairs once, but had no chance to do anything further.
It would have been easy enough to finish him off like that, but would have taken a while. To speed things up Alter brought out his wand scorchers, while Ego supported with elemental arrows. I thought that would probably suppress Daveorn's spells entirely, but he managed to get off this remove magic despite taking 3 different lots of damage during the casting (Ego had a potion of magic blocking ready to protect against anything more serious)

That was Daveorn's final effort though, and he collapsed a fraction of a second later.

The barbarian and monk partnership completed a quick run through BG1 last night.
In the city they picked up the tome of dexterity before heading to Ramazith. Khrog asked Khrang if he wanted a potion of absorption, but he decided there was no need (correctly since Khrog one-shotted him while neutral). Picked up the Helm and Cloak of Balduran - Khrang was struggling a bit with Larze on the way to the latter before Khrog showed him how it was done.
It was Khrog's turn to suffer when obtaining the ogre gauntlets. He intended to retreat from Desreta once the mage disappeared, but got stuck against Vay-ra for a moment before moving. This time Khrang was able to finish things quickly.
Intended to give the poison quest a miss, but started it accidentally, so Jalantha suffered another attack by religious extremists (though we still didn't bother with the wisdom tome as neither of us gets any benefit from it).
With everything wanted in the city obtained, but still quite light on XP, the duo went to clear the basilisk area. Khrong did the heavy work against the basilisks using the green scroll and rage helped him with Mutamin and the party, though Khrog got the final word in against Kirian.
Picked up the fire resistance ring and belatedly noticed neither of us were wearing the Cloak of Displacement. One possible cause of loss for this would be leaving it in a container in the mine after Khrog's death there. If so, it's gone for good as the mine is flooded - oh well.
Back in the city the Iron Throne was attacked using green amulet / rage for protection. The casters went down pretty quickly, but Khrang found it hard to hit Gardush, while taking significant damage in return. Khrog took over the duties of tanking him before finding a nice critical to finish him off.
The tombs were looted using stone giant strength with DUHM / rage before sneaking past the dopplegangers to get to Prat's party. Khrog was spotted too early, allowing the party to get the initial attacks in, but it didn't do them much good. Prat was the final one remaining and decided to commit suicide rather than face Khrang's hammering. I don't think I've ever seen quite so many lightning bolt bounces as here - must have been dozens of them, leaving just a trace of vapour where Prat was.

Slythe was pulled back and pummelled on the way to the palace. Some potions glugged there meant the dopplegangers went down very quickly, with both dukes surviving. Straight on to the maze, where Khrang picked up his last BG1 level from the skeleton warriors. Sneaked past the party to get to the temple.
Sarevok was pulled back with a dispelling arrow from range, so that no-one else reacted. Initially Khrang and Khrog both tried to melee him, but I think only got him to injured before retreating. Then Khrang ran him round firing the odd acid arrow at him, while Khrog used the pillars to hide and sneak in for a quick blow. The only slight alarm before Sarevok gave up was when Khrog set off a lightning trap, but as Khrang had advised both to take potions of absorption at the start that wasn't a genuine worry (normally it's me that sets off that trap).
Khrang, barbarian 8, 92 HPs, 286 kills.
Khrog, monk 8, 53 HPs, 105 kills, 2 deaths.

F = fireballs
In which our daring explorers light up the Iron Throne.
The sixth chapter of BG1 - and the sixth part of this challenge - runs from killing Daveorn to investigating the Iron Throne.
After backstabbing a jelly the duo flooded the mine and left - once more Kysus & Rezdan failing to notice them passing invisibly / stealthed. They made it safely back through the Cloakwood. In my installation that's not quite guaranteed as time passes during resting when ambushes occur, so invisibility can wear off. However, there were no such problems this time.
As I had already cleared the non-TotSC areas this was a relatively short session involving recovery of the tomes in Baldur's Gate (also went to get the one in Durlag's Tower), Balduran's Helm, Helm of Glory and axe +2. No particular problems with any of those encounters, but I did also try and get the ogre gauntlets and mis-clicked on the conversation (Vay-Ya died anyway, but Desreta managed to run away). Also bought some potions and all the spell scrolls Alter did not already know. One point of interest was the battle with Marek where Ego put the 50% he's built up in detect illusion to good use (to find the invisible Marek).
At the Iron Throne Zhalimar failed to recognise where a series of several fireballs was coming from as Alter opened the attack without warning.

Alter managed 2 more fireballs before the opposition started to mobilise. At that point Ego joined in with 5 arrows of explosion from the other direction (he had the green amulet for protection, though didn't actually need it). Alai did get a bit of his own back with a sunfire, though he did rather more damage to his remaining allies than to Alter. The fiery treatments killed most of the opposition, though Ego had to use acid arrows to finish a couple of others off. The final one to go was Alai, who had run downstairs after Alter. Ego once more used detect illusion to find him. Alai must have felt sick that, after surviving numerous fireballs, it was the ring of energy that dealt the fatal blow - though he did manage to land a blow on Ego as he was dying.

Yes, yes, no.

Candlekeep - yes. It's easy and don't need kiting. Just don't speak with Koveras and Iron Throne leaders. I.e. go right onto the top (Warden who should arrest you and Tethtoril in that case just tell you that some person is seeking you), loot all the floors from up to the ground safely and only then speak with Koveras.
Duchal Palace (as from the 1) - no.
3 Bribery. The lady on the 3rd floor of an inn in the city. Deal with Cyrdemac then help/blackmail her.
Yes. And she has quite a pile of gems in her dresser.

G = gloom
In which our pioneers dare to challenge the dark of the catacombs .
The seventh chapter of BG1 - and the seventh part of this challenge - runs from investigating the Iron Throne to leaving the Candlekeep catacombs.
After reporting to Duke Belt the duo travelled to Candlekeep. A warm greeting was promised there, but doing a quick deal with the Gatekeeper allowed them to shake off the pursuers.
Ego practiced his backstabs on Rieltar and his party, before being arrested and transported to the catacombs. His thieving abilities sufficed to loot all the tombs there (note there should have been a screenshot here to refer to the proverb below).
The dopplegangers were bypassed invisibly on the way to Prat and his party. After making safe progress for quite a long while now, this encounter was very sloppy. Things started prematurely while buffing up - Alter went to buff Ego, but moving next to him actually pushed him along the corrider into Prat's sight. Prat and the air elementals came to attack Alter, while Ego tried using detect illusion to spot the other members of the party. It was at this point I realised that Alter had forgotten to put a stoneskin up.
With the elementals dead, but Alter suffering, he tried to get away from Prat. Ego, who still had not joined in the fighting, acted as a blocker in the passageway and Alter summoned some monsters to occupy Prat. Unfortunately that meant that Bor also became active and his darts of stunning required regular infusions of new monsters to act as a buffer.
The pressure eventually told on Prat, meaning Bor was exposed and also quickly killed. The next obvious target was Tam and again he didn't last much longer.
Sakul was more of a problem. Ego used his detect illusion to track him down, but I wasn't concentrating properly at this point and didn't react to Sakul's remove magic. As a result Ego was dominated - lucky this isn't a single player game!

Seconds later a whirling axe from Alter finally caught up with Sakul to end the danger. I just kept the remaining summons moving while Ego slaughtered them and then Alter waited for him to regain his senses.
Mirroring potions were used to deal with the basilisks as Alter & Ego found their way back out into daylight.

@Potty: sorry to hear about your run...many runs (including some of my own) have ended to firewine ruins dungeons...it's to the point now that I often leave the dungeon alone if I don't need the cloudkill/fireball scrolls. Having said that, I often find a fighter with sword and shield and potion of absorption can solo the area, as the mage often dies to his own lightning bolt if you position your fighter correctly. The potion of absorption also helps against the ogrillions in the area.
@Wise - you won't get Chaotic Commands with the level cap, as you need cleric level 9 (which I think is 250,000 experience), but of course cap is 161,000. Good luck with your run in any case.
As to myself - I've returned from the 1st weekend of the Oregon State chess Championship. Only 1/4 points so not so hot...I did draw two masters though which is a plus. That also means I only have to play one master in the next 5 games, so I might have a chance to do a surge this next weekend.
As to my run - because of the championship, I forgot I had one going! Will get to that soon...should be at least one update this week.

Well, no disgrace there. Even with a full party, dealing with Prat's party can be quite problematic. With the cramped quarters and passageways that only a single character to fit through, lots of ways things can go bad. Prat's penchant for throwing lightning bolts around in such as space is no help either. It's to a point that I usually have a single character solo the fight, even in parties, so less things can go wrong.

Clerical Arctic Dwarves Update.
We then went to Baldur’s Gate where we did a lot of fetching and carrying for various people and generally tried to make ourselves useful.
None of us can go up any more levels, so I hope none of the enemies that we meet are more powerful.
Using sanctuary, I was able to discover that the leaders of the iron throne are now at Candlekeep. The Duke therefore gave me a book that gained me entrance.
I ended up in the catacombs where there were many traps. However, because of our high constitutions and protection spells, they caused few problems. Even when attacked by Prat et al, we had an easy time of it now that one of us can cast protection from electricity and lightning.
Upon exiting Candlekeep, we were once more summoned to Restenford, where the baron has been murdered.
None of us has been able to learn Chaotic Commands so we will have to rely upon two scrolls bought in Restenford.
When they are used, they are used, so will have to be frugal with them.

Final stats:
Cassia, Shapeshifter 7, 63 kills, Sirine
Krimlor, F/C 5/5, 212 kills, G-Basilisk
Blackstrider, Blade 7, 131 kills, Vamp Wolf
Grond, Archer 6, 600 kills, G-Basilisk
Alesia, M/T 5/6, 97 kills, Sirine
Pot, Conjurer 6, 72 kills, Molkar
Who the hell is Molkar? Looking at the stats, there's some definite dead wood, not everyone ... OK Pot is completely useless
I think I'll start again with a smaller group, actually I'll design my ideal group then see if any NPC's fit. Grond got just over 50% of the kills, so Kivan's in. Krimlor was a stalwart and allowed Grond to do his job, so .. Yeslick would be in if I could get him sooner, I suppose Branwen works, less melee damage but more spells, which is good. I'm afraid Cassia's project image felt way too much like cheating to me, and without it she becomes like a lesser Jaheira, never my favorite character to start with. Blackstrider was another character I seriously under-utilised. I used him as a lesser Grond with good lore, but pulled him into melee third after Krimlor & Cassia. I think I used offensive spin once, although in fairness I probably only remembered called shot once or twice too. Alesia also mostly got to impersonate Grond, I only ever did one backstab, on a lone kobold that would have died easily anyway. Nice hit, she did 33 damage. I love Jan in BG2, but I can only make this build shine later. I somehow doubt I'd ever make a pure mage shine, but at some point they become so overpowered that they shine regardless.
So, what've I got. Kivan, Branwen, and my standard fallback multiclass fighter/thief PC. I still need a mage, but I fancy something tougher, perhaps multiclass like Quayle, except he can't cast skull trap. Or I could do the easy stuff as a trio, then grab Xan once we've toughened up a bit.
