Btw. My Avatars are currently prepping for Sarevok (Having 6 spell equivalent actions per round proved a luxury in the Slythe and Duchal Palace fights: those were very straightforward.). I'm hoping to finish BG1 this evening and then post tomorrow before leaving for Egypt.

I won't return home until the 28th. I'll continue reading and posting here, but I probably won't play much while I'm away. I'm expecting to start SoA when I get back.

Alphabet challenge
H = heavy

In which our audacious seekers track down an erring brother.

The eighth chapter of BG1 - and the eighth part of this challenge - runs from leaving the Candlekeep catacombs to reporting back to Duke Belt on the defeat of Sarevok.

From Candlekeep the duo went straight to the Undercellars to confront Slythe & Kristin.  A stoneskinned Alter plus a few summons tanked Slythe, then a first use of arrows of dispelling helped ensure Krystin would be no trouble.

At the palace buffed up with potions for the first time.  Ego used dispelling arrows to keep the greater dopplegangers under control, while Alter tried to get them focused on him.  This wasn't terribly successful, but the dopplegangers were killed pretty easily anyway.  As expected, Liia died quickly, but by the time Alter put improved invisibility on Belt there was only 1 doppleganger still fighting - a single further critical hit from Alter finished him off.

Using the same buffs the duo quickly fought their way through the maze, with Ego disarming the traps.  Alter went invisible to get past the Undercity party on the way to the temple.

Started off in the temple by putting scrolls of magic protection up.  That arguably wasn't necessary for Alter, who spent the entire fight invisible, but was a precaution in case one of the mages wandered past him and detected invisibility (I had 6 of the scrolls anyway).  Ego then opened hostilities by using an arrow of dispelling on Sarevok.  He followed that up with stealth shots for a while on Diarmid, before switching to arrows of explosion.  They quickly finished off Diarmid.  The resulting skeleton warrior is an archer, so Ego continued with exploding arrows on it and soon saw the demise of Semaj and then Tazok.

Continuing the exploding arrow barrage while running rings round the skeleton warriors got rid of them leaving only Sarevok and Angelo (who was still invisible).  Ego attacked Sarevok with backstabs - even after his potion of speed ran out he still had a big speed advantage from his boots, so didn't even need to use the pillars.  With Sarevok at near death, Angelo finally deigned to make a move.  This time Ego did use a pillar to hide from him and then tried using his 3 remaining dispel arrows on Angelo.  The first missed, but the second took effect.

Ego then took another potion of speed to give himself an even bigger speed advantage.  His last dispelling arrow got rid of Angelo's renewed stoneskin and 3 rapid backstabs disposed of him.  The same treatment was applied to the skeleton warrior and then Sarevok to finish.

Here are the character stats and BG1 kills for Alter & Ego when reporting back to Belt.

Congratulations Grond0! 80 HP for a fighter/thief sounds pretty good! I know that was more than Picenon had at your level. Best of luck/focus in Amn!

As to my own run: Not sure will be able to get to it this week after all. My family is sick as dogs (except me), and also had a death in the family this week (an uncle - I was fairly close him). Barring any disasters, should be able to next week. I got the chess tourney from Saturday through Monday, so earliest update could be Tuesday.

Good luck to the other runs still going.

600 kills for Grond is quite some going. With Kivan, Branwen and F/T you could dual Imoen or create a 2nd character. I can't remember what mod turns Khalid back into the F/M he was meant to be but that could be another option?

 Quick Note on The Avatars

I'm pleased to report that The Avatars have defeated Sarevok.

I'll try to cover the last half of The Avatars BG1 run over the next few days. Hopefully, I'll find time to continue the narrative.

EDIT: Just adding the bhaalspawn's final stats for the curious.

The kill numbers don't translate directly into value to the group. Grond was a machine, but Krimlor got a respectable 200 kills while simultaneously soaking up thousands of arrows, which would have left Grond looking like a bad special effect. Plus Krimlor's buffing & offensive spells were coming along nicely. Cassia had the lowest kills overall, but she also soaked up loads of arrows, plus she and her images cast 15 heals between every sleep, keeping the group fighting fit. Blackstrider quietly did what bards are best at, which is being second best at just about everything. Plus his meleeing got us out of every one of those ambushes where only two tanks leave the centre characters vulnerable. Did I mention cutting costs by identifying all of our loot for free? Alesia kept our funds liquid, & did some light scouting & trap removal, and finally Pot made the basilisk area a viable challenge, allowing the group to easily earn about 12k XP. OK there are green scrolls for that, but really both Alesia & Pot were investments in the future.

Anyway, I rolled up a chaotic neutral human F/T, Chaosan d'Mayhem, and got him to the FAI without mishap. I'm set on Kivan, Branwen, & Xan, plus I'll probably add Yeslick when I get to him. Also if Kivan is a straight ranger I'll edit him to an archer. Oh and I'll steer clear of both the firewine ruins & ulcaster until after the cloakwood mines.

EDIT Congrats Alesia :D

Molkar is in a group of assassins. A cleric I think, but not sure. With my set up, they can attack you when you are least expecting it. I like that. It makes it far more realistic than knowing where he is going to be. I've even have them attack me near Restenford, which is an area in the Bone Hill mod.

I think that in the vanilla game, he is found near Gullykin, but it's so long since I played vanilla that I could be way off.

EDIT

Just discovered that Gate70 has already answered this.

Woohoo, a completionist! What's your score on some random aspects (think these are OK, been a while since I was a completionist).

1 Basements. Investigate all three in Flaming Fist HQ, Iron Throne HQ, Duchal Palace.
2 Upstairs. Investigate every area in Candlekeep library and Duchal Palace. (*)
3 Bribery. The lady on the 3rd floor of an inn in the city. Deal with Cyrdemac then help/blackmail her.
4 Have one or two shady conversations about the golden pantaloons (n.b. safest to talk without them really).
5 Inspect the railings on the Iron Throne HQ roof. Including clicking on them for a comment.
6 Unlock the Duchal Palace the unconventional way.
7 Pick up an autograph because you can.
8 Obtain a Unicorn Run book for the person 2 doors east of the Duchal Palace.
9 Report on the status of a child to his worried mother.
10 Speak to Nadarin about the basilisk.
11 Speak to the forgotten named lady at the Blade & Stars about a book in Candlekeep.
12 Speak to Portalbendwindar every game.

* Bonus point to allow 13 out of 12 if you kited Tethtoril and co around so you could loot everything from the top of Candlekeep before being arrested.

Edit: Didn't mention hoarding every book in the game because everyone's done that....haven't they.....stop looking at me like that. Maybe I should have started another thread (You haven't really completed BG1 unless...)

1) Yes, Yes, Yes.
2) Yes, Yes. You're not really a completionist unless you've killed Tethoril. Try it. You'll only do it once.
3) Yes except that I would never use blackmail.
4) Now that's a new one to me. :(
5) Yes, and also used dimension door to get  from there to the ground.
6) No
7) Of course. Who'd be without that autograph. Of course to really be a completionist, you have to sell it as well.
8) Getting it from the tower saves going to the FAI for it.
9) Always do that.
10) No
11) But of course. Pity there's no experience.
12) Not EVERY game.

Surely to be a completionist, you should take all the books and put them in Finch's library?

The portrait appealed to me, but looking at it I felt I couldn't seriously claim this was a halfling, so I chose an elf for the dex bonus. All in all a pretty sweet stat roll, and shamelessly min/maxed.

Posted Image

Chaosan's been soloing around the sword coast, visited the friendly arm, took out an assassin with 3 arrows, mugged an ogre for his belt, killed four spiders and returned the goods to the FAI, placated Marl, bumped into an ogrillon south of Beregost and returned a letter, backstabbed several hobgoblins in case any of them had any nice boots, and headed down to Nashkel to see if their revolutionary armour farming methods were bearing any fruit. Bumped into a fascinating young chap called Noober, and hung onto his every word, but he had a pressing engagement elsewhere and had to leave. Chaosan hit 3/3 at this point, with 8000 XP. Haven't slept yet, and haven't taken one hit point of damage. Methinks it's time to buy a scroll of stone to flesh and head east.

Continued failure in BG2 sees another quick run of BG1, about 6-8 hours I guess. The below is from memory, bit hazy on which potions I used where.

Khanegh
Solo Chaotic Neutral male dwarf berserker.

Did the usual warm-up of Candlekeep and Joia then berserked Tarnesh for a change. On to Beregost where Firebead, Marl and Mirianne were helped then down to Nashkel; ankheg armour, Noober, deny I am Oublek, rescue Brage, girdles of bluntness and piercing, Samuel, ring of fire protection, PfM scroll, gauntlets of dexterity and a tome of leadership. Then deliver Melicamp to his premature death, take a war hammer from Bassilus and clear Nashkel mine without having to rest in the dark. Nimbul and Tranzig are dead too.

Off to the Sword Coast where potions (speed, heroism, think invulnerability) see six sirines fall to one berserk rage and three flesh golems dealt with in a second with a couple of healers. The bandit camp sees a sequence of enemies try their luck one at a time so easy pickings. I berserk for Taugosz Khosann and heal once as a caution before equipping his armour. I rest for a berserk entry into the main tent and drop Venkt, Raemon, Hakt then Britik while only taking minor damage from a Melf or two.

On to Cloakwood, seeing no combat in the first area and two spiders plus five ettercaps in the second. I’m given a potion (heroism I think) by a druid for notsiding with the Iron Throne and move through the fourth area without bothering to fight the local wildlife, hamadryad or mercenary. Having reached the Iron Throne mine I deal with two guards on the bridge and draw Drasus out to berserk the boots of speed from him. My second berserk sees eliminates Rezdan and Kysus then I fight Genthore on the move.

Two ghasts in Cloakwood mine are berserked and I’m fortunate enough to kill Hareishan with my second hammer blow so no need for the lightning boots or a berserk. Her guards put up a solid fight but my melee is backed up with a cloak of displacement and girdle of piercing so their arrows are of limited danger. The next level is cleared using melee as is the final guard. More potions (heroism, absorbtion, fire resistance) and a second rage is enough to kill one battle horror and then the second before chasing Davaeorn around and killing him too. My inventory is full but I squash a mustard jelly before handing over the mine key and departing.

I retrieve a body for Farmer Brun on my way to Baldur’s Gate, and once in the city grab a tome of dexterity then kill Ramazith for his magical ring. Lothander, Marek, Varci, Jalantha Mistmyr and the helm of Balduran are next then I kill a few guardians to track down the cloak of Balduran.

Buffs for the Iron Throne HQ (mind focusing, storm giant, fire resistance, absorbtion, heroism, invulnerability, speed, enrage) see the four casters drop in moments and the fighters shortly after. Scar and Duke Eltan think it is lucky to have these buffs ready for a return to Candlekeep. I race to Koveras to collect a family heirloom, then to the top of the library where I am arrested. Ulraunt is of no use but Tethtoril frees me, and with the buffs still active I grab two more tomes (strength, wisdom) before killing a greater doppelganger and the gang led by Prat. A potion of invisibility fools two greater basilisks and I rest to learn new Bhaal abilities.

Back in the city I prepare my inventory then kill Slythe in straight-forward combat. Coronation buffs (mind focus, heroism, storm giant, heroism, invulnerability, speed, power, enrage) fail to save Liia but Belt survives. He sends me after Sarevok so I clear a thieves maze under the potions and sneak around the Undercity to rest before facing Sarevok.

I use a PfM scroll then plink him with a non-proficient arrow of dispelling - it works first time. He follows alone then stops so I switch to hammer/shield and glug more potions (cloud giant, heroism, invulnerability, speed) before moving back to him. We trade a few blows so I glug a regeneration on the run and add a healer or two. Then I hit and run until he is badly wounded - he is often too slow to react. I move in to trade blows again and end up killing him. I deal with Rahvin and co on the way out, taking heavy wounds and having to run around to targetwhoever is furthest from Gorf. Once he is dead I finish the stragglers off (level 9 reached but not taken) All that is left for me to do is pick up the tome of intelligence (only 2 kobolds reacted in the race up & down), golden pantaloons and a tome of wisdom from Durlags Tower.

I wake up to find Imoen is rattling my cage, literally. Screenshots at end of BG1 : Inventory : Record : Tally

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 13
Another barbarian and monk; apparently a Fighter/Illusionist  is too easy :rolls eyes:

While it would be good for Grond0 to No-Reload a protagonist the final two sessions of run 12 were laggy and it seems better with me hosting (also harder to keep a monk alive in a duo). Think that's two rolls of 90 and both gone evil without consulting each other.

Hence Grond0 is the pretty-boy monk.
Posted Image

While Gate70 is the not-so-pretty barbarian protagonist.
Posted Image

The church roof fund is off to a flying start. Here’s 200gp.
Posted Image

Ether is getting a reputation for his stunning looks.
Posted Image

Their journey so far has progressed from Candlekeep via Beregost to Nashkel. After a brief career as pantaloon-rinsers the duo have taken in the sights of a gnomish rock garden, a clerical zombie skeleton fake family re-union, an exploding chicken-man, the deadliest deadest swordsman of the Sword Coast, two brothers chopping a tree down with flails and a 100% discount at the toll-bridge. Rumour has it they are on their way to the seaside to hang out with the sirines and flesh golems.

Previous multiplayer runs: 3 BG1 failures, 8 SoA failures and 1 success (with fighter/illusionists obviously).
1 Nawgrim and Peer. Charname killed by trapped container in Brynnlaw
2 Nadir and Kaxir. Companion chunked by Spellhold greater mummy while in inventory!
3 Berserker and Cavalier. No link, berserker caught by 15hp rage expiry after Mirianne's ogres defeated.
4 Boor and Perry. Thaxxy chunks companion then charname
5 Scion and Cyill. Charname steps into beholder/gauth range
6 Mayse and Khazad. Charname tries to melee mind flayers
7 Bubble and Fomin. Companion imprisoned by Kangaxx while sanctuaried
8 Pendal and Thimble. Melissan is defeated, but Pendal chooses to remain with his companion
9 Bronzer and Reyna. Charname failed to account for the saving throw penalty on Finger of Death
10 Taffy and Tibbs. Charname mysteriously collapses after area transition
11 Sati and Vurro. Charname got too close to Prebek and was targeted by hold person
12 Khrang and Khrog. Charname out-pathed in the Planar Prison
(runs 7, 10 and 12 felt like they ended with the help of a bug but no excuses...)

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 13 (2)
One rage sees three sirines dead,a second 3 more (screenshot of 42 damage to Sil shift/deleted, oops). Ether manages to loot the flesh golem cave but Twinkletoe decides to play with four carrion crawlers to get more experience and then heads back to play hammer-time with the golems. Ether manages several longsword hits from the shadows and although the golems are defeated they've left both adventurers bloodied and bruised.

Greywolf badly wounds Twinkletoe before exploding into chunks and the barbarian decides to head into Nashkel mine without resting. He heals twice and rages to cross the trapped bridge and follows a hidden Ether who has dealt with a kobold commando. A brief 8 hour rest sees a second kobold commando and ghast raged. Mulahey shrugs off a stunning blow and a hammer hit to move away and start casting, but Twinkletoe has raged and lands another huge hit (2nd screenshot deleted with same shift/delete, oops).

Nimbul and Tranzig don't last long, nor does Ardenor Crush. The bandits surrounding Taugosz Khosann make a mess of Twinkletoe and hit Ether twice as we retreat meaning a full heal is required. A second foray has similar results but Taugosz follows and we decide to have it out with him anyway. Twinkletoe uses a rage and three potions while Ether is behind Taugosz adding a flurry of blows.

Ether sneaks into the bandit tent next to Hakt as Twinkeltoes storms over to Venkt. The mage crumples after three hits and a miss and Twinkletoes turns to Raemon who doesn't last long. Hakt is proving troublesome for Ether so Twinkeltoes smashes him to the floor and turns to one-shot Britik. A lightning trap doesn't cause much damage but we rest on the way to a shop. With our funds refreshed we head into Cloakwood.

Ether rests but Twinkletoe has been worrying about his backpack and sleepwalks to High Hedge, Beregost and back. A few items stored, a few items purchased and a few items sold. His little legs aren't able to get him to Ulgoth's Beard though and he has a fitful remainder of the night worrying about monk-shaped pin-cushions. The fat pile of gold built up is little consolation so a longer trip might be in order before continuing.

Twinkletoe, barbarian 6. 77hp. 172 kills, greater basilisk.
Ether, monk 6. 46hp. 52 kills, flesh golem.

Four Dwarven Clerics Update

We solved
the murder relatively easily and returned to Baldur’s Gate. There we rescued
Duke Eltan, killed some more assassins and also some leaders of the Iron
Throne. They launched a surprise attack upon us as I was expecting them to be
still on the top floor. They weren’t apart from three of them. They were on the
next floor down. However, because they were separated, they were relatively
easy to deal with. We then dealt with some assassins in the Undercellar before
facing up to Sarevok in the ducal palace. It was easy. As we were expecting
trouble, we were buffed with “Bless,” “Haste,” “Shield of Faith,” “Chant,” and
“DUHM”. We then used the wand of sleep to great effect.

We then completed the Stone of Askvaar Quest and will now move on to the Greyclan episode.

Note:

Despite re-installing the experience cap, it is not there.

We could therefore level up to level 8. However instead of doing that, we will stay at level 7 and reduce our experience to 161000 at the end of BG1.

On Friday I left my rougeless rogue meeting the good people of Nashkel. Needless to say some of them insulted our new friend Noober, and had to be disciplined.

Posted Image

Yup, you're getting such a drubbing. Just as soon as this hold wears off ...

Posted Image

... Muhahahaha ...

Afterwards, feeling suitably nervous, I decided to go get Branwen. Right after I've stolen all the stuff in the manor house. Oh wow and look at this rubbish sword, I bet Greywolf wouldn't use something like this. I'll go ask him.

Posted Image

Nope, he wouldn't.

Posted Image

This is why I play thieves. This is why I take a point in single weapon style

Some nice updates, keep it going.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 13 (3 & 4)
3.
Ether isn’t sure how the claw of Kazgaroth arrived but he happily tries it on. It bites down and he is stuck with it, good job it suits him.

A few spiders and ettercaps won’t stop us from crossing Cloakwood. Ether grabs a potion of invulnerability from a druid before we move on to the secret Iron Throne mine. Drasus is drawn to his doom then Ether attacks Kysus while Twinkletoe goes for Rezdan. Genthore gets a double-pronged attack. Inside the mine a few guards are killed and two ghasts are raged before Ether sneaks past Hareisan and her guards (Twinkletoe is in the closest cell to the stairs and “teleports” down with Ether so the guards don’t notice us).

A few more guards are eliminated then we have some fun and games with a battle horror. We’re not really in a good shape to face the second but glug healing potions to make ourselves more presentable then finish it off. Twinkletoe adds a yellow potion that helps against magic and makes a suitable impression with Davaeorn.

4. Ether confirms he can stun pretty much anything then we head to Ulgoths Beard for a greenstone amulet and cloak of displacement. From there we move on to the city of Baldur’s Gate, grab a tome of dexterity, ring of protection +2, helm/cloak of Balduran and gauntlets of ogre strength - another mighty tussle.

The Iron Throne HQ is carefully planned but Twinkletoe stands idle for a few seconds next to a caster. Ether has made a better start and when Twinkletoe gets going things pick up. Gardush has other ideas though, causing Ether to have a 2hp near-death experience. Twinkletoe moves so Ether can step away and glug a potion then battle resumes. A few more potions are glugged as the final pair of mercenaries are dropped.

After reporting to Duke Eltan we are sent back to Candlekeep where PfM and Storm Giant potion allow two more tomes to be retrieved. A greater doppelganger manages to cast haste and another scrappy fight follows. With more healing potions consumed the doppelgangers are finally sorted and we can move on to Prat. Ether gets a bit confused and is attacked by Tam. Twinkletoe is able to intervene and waits until Ether recovers (not really, he went and played in two web traps with a bunch of spiders).

Once back in the city a bit of inventory management saw us ready for the coronation. Despite our best endeavours Liia perishes and only Belt is left to bellow orders at us. He teleports us to the thieves guild where we pause for breath.

Twinkletoe, barbarian 7. 248 kills, greater basilisk.
Ether, monk 7. 75 kills, Slythe.

(Some challenging moments, particularly battle horrors, Desreta and Iron Throne HQ. Our BG1 familiarity is getting us through so far but may also be causing us to take a few risks too many).

Clerical Dwarves Update
Finished off the Grey Clan Episode.
Only difficult part was entering the Inn.
The skeletons there were immune to spells so had to rely on buffing which ran out before the battle was over. Was glad that I hadn't wasted my potions of extra healing as I needed them! Indeed, I must have used eight overall. The only benefit of doing this quest was the extra one point of intelligence. That could come in handy in BG2!
