I headed to the xvaart attacking cow area because Kivan want's a 2-handed sword +1. Kitted out easily, then spotted a cave marked on the area map that I never knew was there before. In we went, and saw a lone ettercap. Chaosan & Kivan fire arrows, and Branwen charges. Chaosan shouts 'nobody move', but too late, and we are hit with a web trap. Both archers are webbed, but Branwen keeps smacking it with her hammer. 2 rounds later, she fails her save, and shortly after, died. Kivan & Chaosan both followed without ever escaping the web. Sigh. An ettercap. Grumble.

The thieves maze is completed with our buffs still active, then we skirt around Rezdan and his mercenaries to reach the Undercity temple of Bhaal. A final rest and then we step inside.
Twinkletoe fires an arrow of dispelling at Sarevok and retreats as it misses. He returns to hit and dispel with a second and Sarevok attacks. We vary our tactics to frustrate him, with arrows (biting, acid), bullets (+2 I think), hammer and fists. A few healing potions are augmented with regeneration potions. Then we move in for a final pincer movement.

Stats:
Twinkletoe,
Ether, monk 8. 78 kills, Slythe.

That cave is so easy IF you've done it before, just like a lot of battles.
Hard luck. You will have better luck next time as you will know not to move and wait for it to attack you.
I usually go in with a single party member, not CHARNAME.
Note: There are other caves in other areas with similar traps!! Beware!!!
Clerical Dwarves Update
Went to the bottom of Durlag's Tower and beat the Demonknight. Had to use several potions there, as I did on the chess board. I played the chess board badly, but not having done it with SCS before, didn't know what to expect.
I suspect that next time will be a lot easier. Just protect everyone from lightning and let the traps do the job for me.
I only did this area to find out what the Dark Horizons Assassins were like. No problem at all! Only loot worth having was for a thief.
A bit of a waste of time as I'm at the experience cap, didn't need the money, and the items were no better than what I have already.
Does anyone know what I have to do to find out what is going on re the Section 2.
I have killed lots of assassins, and have broken into their headquarters where there was a lone assassin who I killed.
I got the impression from the Dark Horizons website that I should be able to find out what is going on.

Gorion's note didn't give me much of a clue what to do next, only pointing me to Jaheira at the friendly arms inn. Getting there, I was accosted by an arcane caster, so I turned tail and ran. I managed to melt into some shadows, then stealthily returned to find the caster still in the same spot. He clearly slept through the thief module in mage101.
Jaheira was a pushy elf who's partnership offers I blew off, but she did tell me Gorion had expressed concern about the iron coming out of the Nashkel mines. As clues go it will have to do.
Heading south, I managed to avoid most hostiles, although I decided a lone ogre looked slow enough to backstab and finish off with arrows. Reaching Beregost, I managed to placate an irate man in a bar, then decided to knock over a few houses. Some fine pickings in a trading warehouse staffed by a surly dwarf, but the second house I hit was infested with monstrous spiders, so I ran. They followed me, so I retreated while firing arrows. I really regretted not spending more time on this skill, but finally I killed the one following me, stealthed, and finished off the other three with backstabs. I celebrated by selling the old boots and bottle of wine for a gold piece each, but no-one wanted the dead spider.
Heading further south, I grabbed 5 potions of health from a cave, and some excellent boots from a hobgoblin, which seemed to make me more stealthy. I celebrated by killing a ghast, and gained a level of thief. The trip to Nashkel was uneventful, apart from killing two ogrillions with backstabs. The only loot was a scruffy note, but the merchant in Nashkel also gave me a gold piece for it, whoohoo. Now I'm off to the inn for a well-earned rest.

There you go. Half-orc. The mouth cover is a dead giveaway. No-one without 6-inch fangs would wear such a stupid thing. Apart from that, the class and even the name are my default fallbacks. Smoke as in, like fighting smoke.
So, what is a sidequest? Basically, anything that ends up in the done quests log has to be from the main quest. You may have to read the notes you pick up for the first time in years, because that's what you have to do next. Basically, FAI, Nashkel mines, kill Mulaney, reward from Berrun Gaskill (optional), kill or free Tranzig, Bandit camp, talk to Ender Sai, Cloakwood mine, kill Davaernon, flood the mine, go to Baldur's gate, Flaming fist compound, talk to Scar/Duke Eltan, Iron throne building, Duke Eltan, Candlekeep, library 6th floor, Catacombs, Baldur's gate, Flaming fist, Harbormaster, Iron throne, Sewers, Palace, Thieve's guild, maze, undercity, Sarevok.
You may obviously travel through the areas between two points. In the wilds this should be in a relatively straight line, although you can choose the line to intersect with a target, and even get a bit lost, but exploring the entire area is not in the spirit of the thing. Towns you can explore if you want, as long as you were there anyway.
I confess I tend to more kill enemies than are required for the main story. I think this is fine as people without stealth would probably have to kill them too. Just because I could avoid them doesn't mean I don't want the XP or loot. A classic example is the ambush after exiting the Nashkel mines.
Yes I could head west and avoid it. No it has nothing to do with the story. Do I want the loot? Damn right I do.
In BG2 we decided that the entire shark city was a sidequest, and you should go through the portal to the underdark. On the other hand, while you could bypass the entire Ust Natha thing, kill the drow at the exit, and leave the underdark, you do not know that at the time, and need that face time with the matron mother in order to find out where they went.

OK details. I snuck through the entire mine without killing any kobolds to speak of, unless they were alone. I did bump off the zombie, but left the spiders, kobold shaman, chieftan, etc. I managed to disable all the traps while stealthed, I think that's from the tweakpack, disabling a trap doesn't break stealth.
I wiped out everything in the area before Mulaney, then snuck in, slugged my potion of power, hid, changed to the Ankheg armour (which doesn't break stealth, but prevents re-hiding at the start of the next round), backstabbed Mulaney, finished him with a couple more hits, and mopped up the remaining summons with ease. The armour switch is a bit cheesy, but there's no way I'd survive without it.

@Potty: ah yes those amazon assassins. I wouldn't be surprised if they defeated every no-reloader at least once -- they certainly have me as well. For solo character, a greenstone amulet and some antidotes, and as high AC to missiles as possible then you can just trade missiles with them. Multiple necklace of missiles charges would work too.
As to my own run - I haven't forgotten about it, but just before I went to my chess tournament I got sick as a dog (fever, runny nose, coughing) - the fever didn't break until Wednesday. I'm back at work now but when I get home will work on it soon.
You can see my chess games and results at www.pdxchess.org, see Oregon Invitational games/results links there. Result was 3.5/9 for 7th/8th place out of 10 players. I enjoyed the battles, despite being sick, I need this kind of competition.

The Final Battle was fairly straightforward. I was able to take on Sarevok's Cohorts one at a time.
The only dangerous part was when Semaj cast chaos. Silly me, I hadn't used my chaotic commands scroll!
Two of us were affected and I was concerned that one of them might alert our enemies as to our location. Therefore used my only dispell magic spell. Having only one was a mistake and will not be repeated!
After the spell there was only one character affected by chaos and fortunately he didn't alert any more enemies. That was because I had led them into the bottom left hand corner of the room before using an invisibility potion. Once we were all in control of our senses, we took out Semaj, then Tazok.
When there was only Diarmid and Sarevok left, I was attacked by Sarevok. I had on the boots of speed so led sarevok round and round the room whilst the others killed Diarmid. We then all converged on Sarevok, taking turns to retreat and use healing potions. He was unconcious for ages before we finally succeeded in killing him.
Goodknight: Most powerful vanquished: Semaj. No. of kills 410. Exp value of kills: 259238. Exp 128800.
Painbearer: Most powerful vanquished: Demonknight. No. of kills 260. Exp value of kills: 115927 Exp 128800.
Guard o' t' North: Most powerful vanquished: Grachus: No of kills: 703. Exp value of kills: 491807. Exp 128800.
Dawnbringer: Most powerful vanquished: Tevan: No. of kills 777, Exp value of kills: 492318. Exp 128800.
Painbearer of Ilmater didn't really do a very good job as the spells weren't great either. If I do another clerical group, it will have Priest of Helm instead or maybe a cleric that I haven't tried before.
The Holy Strategist of the Red Knight might not have had as many kills as the other two, but his spells helped them immensely, particularly haste.
I've come to the conclusion that I like clerics, particularly dwarven clerics.
I'm afraid that I couldn't be bothered to do werewolf island or the Drizzt Saga this time.
Are there tomes in either of them? If so they might be worth considering.
Having Arctic Dwarves rather than the standard variety was a definite advantage despite the 20% reduction in experience. Sleeping nearly always led to full recovery.

Just lost Khanegh the berserker to Pai’Na/harm/fire elemental combination at level 15 (thanks for tip Corey, I never bother with RoR but it would have been the best option there. I’d assumed HP weren’t an issue so need to change my solo approach in future).
Anyway, back with another run that should be a bit more challenging for me.
Thrun
Once the Candlekeep chores are over it is time to get ambushed in the woods and run for my life. Tarnesh manages to scare me at the Friendly Arm Inn but a Shield spell keeps me alive until I recover but the guards kill him while we each dodge quarterstaff blows. Some brief experimentation sees me adopt sleep then Quarterstaff/LMD repetitions, doing so allows me to deal with Joia’s hobgoblins, Mirianne’s ogrillions, an overgrown fox after a chicken dinner, Gnarl, Hairtooth, Unshey’s ogre, Caldo and Krumm.
Marl and Firebead are helped too, then the spellcasting goes a bit awry. Sleep surges into strength (19) then a second sleep is resisted by Arghain. A rash decision to cast Shield for strengthened melee surges into a much better option as two dire wolves are summoned instead. The three of us are too much for the half-ogre to cope with.
Thrun, Wild Mage. 22 kills, Arghain.

& why have one familiar when you can have two?

Bjornin stares in disbelief, then hands me his shield as a reward for killing four half-ogres in their sleep. A LMD stops Tenya before she can cast a spell then I return a bowl to her.
Wenric also stares in disbelief, how can a man in a dress (they don’t see many mages out in the sticks) deal with 20 zombies in a single afternoon. No rest, no potions - just a Shield spell (lasted for 18 of them), 6 out of 7 LMD’s and a quarterstaff. I let him into my secret - I have purchased a Martial Staff +3. Even so I’m pleased with the results and am starting to reconsider my approach to life.
There isn’t much of Melicamp to bury once Thalantyr has exploded him, and the same is true of my funds after taking several attempts to learn mirror image, invisibility and skull trap.
1 surge this session (entangle instead of LMD on a sleeping half-ogre), 3 in total.

My intention was to try dualling him, but realistically I don't think he would have stood any chance of making progress in BG2 anyway. I think I'll have a go with a dwarf version next.

Mittrek and gang have very nearly explorered the entire Sword Coast, except TotSC areas. Speaking of which, the gang did clear the surface of Durlag's Tower of enemies. We also cleared out Larswood, without too much trouble. Finally, we did some Ankheg hunting...as long as Joshua with this -6 AC was seen first, it went very well, no deaths or anything. We will be entering the great city of Baldur's Gate soon...

Thrun
Invisibility allows me into the cave of Black Alaric. A tome of bodily health is of little use, but read anyway. I decide to keep a cloak of the wolf and a wand of paralyzation then go play with Bassilus. After a rigid thinking is endured in splendid isolation and several of his undead are culled I decide even a wild mage isn’t crazy enough to continue such a suicide mission.
Instead I grab a tome of leadership using invisibility. Then I use Shield, Mirror Image, Skulltrap, Magic Missile and LMD to tackle some unlikely enemies with melee and magic; a bear, Greywolf, basilisks and Mutamin. Nashkel mine gets more of the same with invisible rests, Mulahey succumbing to a brace of skulltraps. Two stinking clouds work but a third surges into horror - despite this Lamahla and her amazons are taken care of too. A Shield spell and a save against horror means Nimbul is easy pickings while Tranzig is disrupted with a series of LMD's.
An invisible rest allows me to locate Bassilus for a second time. I melee three or four of his companions with my quarterstaff then bash a few skulls together. A LMD fails to disrupt Rigid Thinking and I'm left to regret not using the greenstone amulet instead. I resist two holds but my mirror images expire as he casts entangle and moves in to melee. I'm expecting this to go badly but instead I hit him twice then stagger backwards. He follows and I turn to deliver a third hit that sees him crushed while I am still thinking rigidly. My familiar is chittering away - very unhappy with the risks taken there.

My plan for Campo Bandito is to hit any melee enemies each round and move away to minimise counter-attacks, or to blast any archers before too many arrows head in my direction. The first bandit shoots past me with his arrow but my magic missiles pound him to the floor. Three hardy Chill hobgoblins take three staff blows so I switch to the Dagger of Venom. Three misses and two saves later one of them hits past my Shield but I have poisoned him in return. Four more misses and one save later a second is poisoned but a third hits me twice in quick succession so I LMD-MM him.
A skulltrap wounds one hobgoblin as I poison-MM a second. I try to poison-MM a third but instead slow the pair of us down so stab him again. Ardenor Crush has remained still so I wait for the slow to wear off and try a stinking cloud. He ignores it and attacks; my Shield has worn off so I decide to keep my distance until I’ve poisoned the last Chill. A MM Blindness combo allows me to stab Ardenor and the poison quickly kills him. There is a Skulltrap that the hobgoblins pass four times without exploding so two containers are too dangerous for me to loot.
A few more bandits are killed with Magic Missiles while Taugosz Khosann takes a Skulltrap, a MM, two LMD’s and still has to be treated to Greater Malison and Blindness. After a number of misses (rolls up to 18) with the dagger I switch to the quarterstaff and a single strike (roll 16) finishes him off. I rest before clearing the remainder of the camp (most damage taken when a Mirror Image surges into a fireball) and cast Invisibility to head inside the main tent.
Venkt gets Magic Missile and a poisoned dagger so has to step outside for
Cloakwood next. I sneak to the mine, Skulltrap a pair of guards then lay a cluster of Skulltraps before antagonising Drasus. He charges straight through them so I have to fight on the run. His three companions all catch the Skulltraps so I work back to them and then finish Drasus off.
Invisibility takes me through the mine, although I stop to
172 kills, greater basilisk. A few surges (pretty gems, slow Britik & Thurn, couple more fireballs).

The quattro has cleared the southern portions of the City of Baldur's Gate (excepting Iron Throne), and also the sewers. Other than melee/ranged, the most significant things we are doing are using acid arrows and wand of heavens if a particularly hard fight. For the 5 ogre mages, used immolation - everyone threw a fireball via potion or necklace of missiles. Things are going smoothly, we hope to clear the city by tomorrow.

Stari the sorceror (Grond0) / Maldor the undead hunter (Gate70)
Despairing for the moment of keeping a berserker / monk combination alive right through the game we're introducing a sorceror for the first time. I vaguely remember discussing this option when we first started multi-player and concluding it would be too difficult to manage, However, we've had quite a bit of experience since then and so far it's worked pretty well.
We didn't try to force XP this time (never killed either Shoal or the basilisks), so Stari was vulnerable for a long time to ranged ambushes, but the bandits didn't spawn until she was 6th level and pretty safe.
Stari did mention early on it would be nice if she didn't have to patronize the temple this run. That naturally induced a second level Maldor to attack a group of about 8 ghasts, ghouls and hobgoblins to demonstrate his natural immunity to hold. He did, indeed, demonstrate that, along with the fact that 20 HPs doesn't last long against multiple attackers.
There were no further problems for a long while as the duo worked through most of the map areas before turning their attention to the Nashkel mine. Mulahey there was one of many victims thrashing around blindly wondering where the next attack was coming from. Stari was pretty much untouched through this period, though she did take one hit shortly after exiting the mine. Lamahla and her crew were treated to multiple webs and then 3 of them were blinded before Stari ran out of 1st level spells. Telka managed to break free of the web and do a bit of damage before expiring of magic missiles. Maldor then took significant damage himself and was looking round to see who did it (actually storm damage, though I was just too slow to capture the lightning on the screenshot).
Stari's invisibility made it easy to travel through the Cloakwood to the mine, though there was a moment here that would have been more appropriate for a wild mage when she magic missiled herself rather than casting invisibility! At the mine Drasus and Genthore were pulled away from the casters to their doom. Then Maldor rushed Kysus and rapidly killed him; he was confused in the process, but fortunately Rezdan couldn't see what was happening by then and was an easy victim.
No further problems for a while after that. The Iron Throne party was killed rather than bypassed as we were still pretty low on XP. However, as only Zhalimar and the doppleganger could still see after Stari had used some pillars to hide from the former, they had no chance. After collecting the treasure from the Candlekeep tombs the intention was also to deal with Prat's party. However, Prat saw Maldor before preparations were made and the fight was thus rather fairer than many. Maldor was still protected by the scroll of magic protection used for the tomb traps, so was happy to enter the fray. However, he was given a nasty shock by Bor (he was wearing ring of free action, but it appears that doesn't protect against stun in this installation). Stari saw no way to intervene safely, so settled for picking up the less easily replaced equipment and returning to the city to find a temple.
Slythe was pulled away and overwhelmed, while there was also a rapid conclusion to the palace fight. Maldor, potioned up, soon made a pattern of spreading chunks out of the dopplegangers and both dukes survived. On the the Undercity and the confrontation with Sarevok. No risks were taken there - Sarevok being pulled away from his companions with an arrow of dispelling fired from long range. While Maldor darted in and out of melee with him Stari concentrated on magic missiles and Sarevok didn't last long - Stari still had 5 more MM spells left when he gave up.
Stari, sorceror 8, 33 HPs, 126 kills.
Maldor, undead hunter 7. 84 HPs, 257 kills, 2 deaths.
Stari's spells (in order of taking at each level)
L1 - magic missile, blind, shield, spook, chill touch
L2 - invisibility, web, mirror image, blur
L3 - MMM, skull trap, remove magic
L4 - stoneskin

I grab a tome of dexterity then some bracers for Noralee and take another pair from Meilum since I can use them. Next I sneak into the Iron Throne HQ to gather evidence, confront Thaldorn and rest on the roof (no dimension door spell so return to Sorcerous Sundries only to find you can’t use the spell to teleport down to the ground, at least in BGT).
Sunin send his boys outside to play, Joular tries blind mans bluff while the other one gets to juggle with Magic Missiles. They’re less troublesome than my own spells (red-dot screenshot that Grond0 has been expecting for some time).
I grab a few items and head to Scar who introduces me to Duke Eltan. Before I know it I am stood outside Candlekeep with a History of the Nether Scrolls tome. There is a lot to learn inside the library, including several spells left within my reach. Once I have picked up a ring from Koveras I am arrested by the gatewarden and set free by Tethtoril. There are more spells in the secret library and one that catches my eye in particular (why do I choose to experiment now...)
DoppelPhyldia is thwarted by two sets of Magic Missile. Magic Missile traps are thwarted by one or both of Shield & Minor Globe of Invulnerability. A missile trap injures me slightly but the MGoI neutralises a lightning bolt. Knock opens a locked and trapped container. Two other containers are looted in the same way, although the short duration and lack of familiarity with MGoI sees me fireballed for 50% damage at one point. Lesson learnt.
I store various items and grab others, then decide not to kill Larze. Slythe thinks he is in for some fun, and so he is - for six volleys of Magic Missile while my hasted boots, spirit armour and mirror images foil his every attack.
The coronation is scary, with Liia killed before my eyes. Three greater doppelgangers are having a malisoned nap but two others are harassing Belt until my hasted wand summons and magic missiles finish them off.
I am part-way through the thieves maze with yet more equipment when I realise I am reaching my (BG1) zenith, so hit a couple of oozes to learn level 5 spells - of which I have none so back I go. (Cue 30 minutes of hunting, could find chaos but don’t like it. Eventually remember cloudkill scroll in Cloud Peak Mountains). I speed through the maze and undercity with invisibility and MGoI active until I am standing outside the slightly less abandoned than usual Temple of Bhaal.
I draw Sarevok out but Angelo and Semaj react too - so I use a scroll of PfM. They remain north of the mosaic skull so I lose Sarevok in the bottom left corner at the cost of a potion of invisibility.
Angelo is first to fall. Tazok has appeared and I move slightly too close, meaning Sarevok joins in again. I take a few hits but my hit and run approach is too much for the half-ogre. Semaj has mirror images up and is proving hard to hit so I give him a wand full of ogres while occupying Sarevok. I move in for the kill but an ogre beats me to it and Sarevok almost kills me.
I use another wand of monsters to distract Sarevok so I can wait for PfM to wear off. Once it goes I dispel his buffs (works) and cast slow twice (fails). I try some melee and whenever I am too badly injured I switch to Magic Missiles. I try Blindness but it is a slow cast and he almost kills me so I continue with more Magic Missiles and melee. I try another Blindness and it is bad news
(Should have stuck with Magic Missiles, had a fair amount left)

My gaming time recently has been nearly all multi-player, but I have just made a start with this wizard slayer. So far he has travelled from Candlekeep to Beregost. Some spiders and helping Firebead find a book there got him to level 2 and 11 more HPs. Also completed the Slime quest (and retained the real potion for later use; I didn't allow the previous WS to use this, but I think I will this time as it always rankles leaving the tomes at Candlekeep behind).
Marl, Firebead and some ogrillons and hobgoblins to the south saw level 3 in with 8 more HPs. Down to Nashkel to pick up an armour upgrade and buy a scroll of protection from petrification before moving on to the basilisk area. Killing the basilisks there got Crock to level 4 (15 HPs) and then level 5 (15 more!). Managed to spot where Mutamin was without alerting him and I sent Korax to deal with him. Mutamin saved against paralysation once and then Korax got distracted into attaking a basilisk so Crock moved to the edge of the map expecting he would have to depart. Fortunately Mutamin didn't bother using many spells on Korax and he was able to kill the basilisk and still survive long enough to paralyse Mutamin. That allowed Crock to come back to kill the second greater basilisk as well.
Picked up Samuel and returned him to the Friendly Arm. Left Tarnesh for now though as he can be a bit risky (it's not always possible to run away anywhere before his first spell hits you. Moving north Crock reported to Tenya on the demise of some fishermen, getting to level 6 in the process (11 HPs).
Here's his current character record.
