Baldur's Gate 1 No-Reload Challenge

Helped Ardrouine and tried, unsuccessfully, to revive Melicamp. Killed a zombie husband for Leila and then used a green protection scroll and half a dozen healing potions in clearing an ankheg nest. The reward for returning a body from the nest to a farmer got Crock to reputation 20. I double-checked there was nothing usable for sale at Ulgoth's Beard and then went back to High Hedge to buy the Claw and Horn of Kazgoroth. Also picked up a shortbow +1 in Beregost while returning Perdue's sword.
Providing Bjornin with revenge on some half-ogres and bushwhacking Sendai (who only wanted to talk) allowed Crock to purchase full plate. Other than ammunition and perhaps healing potions I think he's now got everything of use to him.
Back to the Cloudpeaks to clear those. Did all the main encounters, except Borda (who is lethal for a lone character without spell protection). Used the bridge to minimise the number of gibberlings attacking at once when helping Laurel (and didn't get hit even once in the process). The tome gave Crock a nice 50% increase in his charisma.
Prism's gratitude for the death of Greywolf got Crock to level 7 and 14 more HPs. His very healthy HP total certainly makes the Claw a more attractive option. Thinking about how he could boost HPs further I realised there was another piece of equipment in Beregost that would be useful - a helm of charm protection at Feldepost's Inn (WS count boots and helms as wearable armour, though not bracers, cloaks or belts). Using that, Crock was able to eventually chase down and kill the first group of 3 sirenes. However, there were a couple of nereids nearby Sil and her companions and their intervention looked rather too much to handle so Crock ran into the cave. I originally intended just to grab the treasure and run, but only 2 of the sirenes followed him, so further running and fighting ensued until they and the golems were dead. Popping out and back in got the third sirene to follow to her doom. Then, with the odds looking rather better, Crock proceeded to attack the nereids. Their venom spit is quite nasty and he had to use 3 antidotes, as well as dodge in and out of the cave a number of times, but eventually they were also finished off.
Next up will be an assault on the Nashkel mine.

Although there are hordes of kobolds the main problem in the Nashkel mine for a solo character is the kobold shaman. To deal with him safely Crock engaged the attention of nearby enemies and pulled him back all the way to the entrance. He beat the chieftain in a duel, but the shaman did not immediately appear. He was hiding round the corner, but Crock had time to get back to the entrance and leave before the charm person hit (though in retrospect his helm would have protected him anyway). Crock did stick around for a blindness and failed that, but when the shaman came in to hand to hand he still made him pay.
In Mulahey's cave Crock waited for him to appear and then tried shooting him with the kobold chieftain's poison arrows. The first shot was successful, so Crock stayed in the cave briefly. However, Mulahey was still able to get a hold person off meaning Crock had to make another quick exit.
Back in the cave a dangerous moment came when he was blocked from the exit point. However, he was able to smash a way through and depart again before Mulahey finished his spell. A couple more area transitions and Mulahey's remains were decorating the ceiling.
Reported back to the mayor, but didn't bother confronting Nimbul, as fighting an invisible mage running all over the map is asking for trouble. Instead Crock went after Tranzig who is much more easily handled. A couple of trips up and down the stairs ended with Tranzig being poisoned and he died rapidly thereafter.
At the bandit camp, as soon as the alarm is sounded quite a few bandits start chasing the PC (even if invisible). In itself that's not too much of a problem, but can be a serious distraction in dealing with Venkt. Crock fled the area once, but on his return Venkt was the first one to arrive and Crock managed to get through his mirror images and poison him while using the Horn as partial protection. With his death I switched to running round and every now and then turning for a hit at the nearest pursuer. There were a couple more retreats, but no real problems in clearing the remaining bandits - Taugosz being nearly the last to go.
The webs from SCS giant spiders mean that Cloakwood ambushes are likely to be lethal, so Crock wanted to get Spiders Bane. That meant taking on several giant spiders along with other sorts. The plan here was to try and separate them as far as possible - by using a green protection from poison scroll Crock should be able to survive against just a single giant spider even if he failed his web check. In working towards the spider nest Crock got up to level 8, gaining 13 more HPs to breach the 100 HP mark - it's been a while since any of my characters did that in BG1.
In the event the plan got changed. Initially only the sword spiders chased him out and, after killing those, I decided it would be safer to sit on the exit point and try and transit when a web was shot rather than risk being webbed running away from the nest. Transitions worked a couple of times, though Crock did also need to rely on luck to save once before the spiders were dead.

The next challenge will be the Cloakwood mine.

Enter new Smoke, who I decided looks just like a halfling.

Currently level 4/5, XP 20k (10 in each class), 121 kills, toughest a Winter wolf. So for a start you can see I explored a bit more, and killed more things. I have just killed Nimbul and am on my way back to Beregost.

Sneaky sneaky ..

Stabby stabby ...

Just because you use a ranged weapon, doesn't mean you should chill out holding one.

Stabby sneaky stabby ...

Party experience (each): 136,000
The quattro continues exploring and battling in the city of Baldur's Gate. We did make a little screw-up. We freed the nymph then talked to Razamith, he had nothing to say to us and wouldn't go back inside his place. I wasn't sure if I would make the citizens hostile if I attacked him, so we ignored him and cleared/looted his tower. I was a bit silly and put free action on Joshua and him and MIttrek cleared the ghasts - forgot as an undead hunter, Joshua can't be held by ghasts. The INT tome went to Mittrek of course.
So instead we temporarily recruited Garrick again and had him to try to pick-pocket the ring, that doesn't work, only got his metaspell amulet then said no items - don't want to make the surrounding citizens hostile, so we will just have to do without this run. Garrick also pick-pocketed for us the cloak of balduran, then we booted him out of the party.
The party obtained the telescope from the Hall of Wonders for the gnome at the Elf Song. Paja is awesome for that task with her sanctuary.
We got the helm of glory from Hardak I think his name is. Joshua prepped with STR potion and heroism and that was enough to tilt the battle in our favor. Helm of Balduran was also picked up. We had a brief battle with the mountain maulers. Only real prep was 4 skeletons and remove fear. Mittrek was the MVP of that battle, his arrows of piercing was slaying all the enemies almost by himself. Only kinda scary thing was a caster threw a lightning bolt right at Mittrek! However, by this point Mittrek has plenty of HP to survive a hit (and he did). Shortly after that, the last enemy fell.
I accidentally triggered the poison quest, so had do take care of that. We obtained a WIS tome for Paja. We headed to our base to unload some things and get a fire resistance potion for Mittrek. Mittrek plans to solo the 5th floor baddies at the Iron Throne - but we ran out of time, and so ended our session and saved before we could attempt that battle.

I had a plan last night but can’t remember what it was. I add a couple of drawings to my previous journal entry and then a stabby stabby vision reminds me of the plan.
The green protection from acid scroll and greenstone amulet charge (2) suffice but in hindsight I should have had a potion of freedom available too. I glug 5 healing potions so am briefly out of pocket but these Amazons travel heavy - a single helmet is left on the battlefield so my stash and cash are much improved.
Tranzig manages to cast armour then I miss three or four times meaning a Melf Acid Arrow outlives the caster. The Chill hobgoblin at the bandit camp think this kensai is woefully unprepared and line up to give me a kicking - something like this eh Ardenor.
I kill four or five bandits until Taugosz Khosann arrives to spoil the fun. He hits me twice so I cure wounds twice on the run. I’m reasonably healed (56/62hp) and have a second kai so I switch from running to fighting again. He takes three hits in succession and
I use charge 3 of the greenstone amulet and step inside. The main bandit tent is executed perfectly; by them (I get stuck so can’t move to Venkt quickly enough and Hakt is hitting me too easily with poison arrows). I glug a green potion and retreat outside to glug three blues. Raemon has followed me to a lake so I feed him to the fishes and backtrack. Britik is nearby and takes three hits to fell, then Hakt is waiting by a smaller tent. He gets scared, takes two steps back to recover and switches to his bow - chunktime. I glug more blue potions (4 left) and return to Venkt who is standing outside the main tent.
He is casting what looks like another Melf so I close in without the amulet protection. The arrow hurts as does a second so I glug a healer just as he perishes from sword-accelerated bio-degradation. (+9hp)
Ender Sai tells me I have no chance of taking Cloakwood mine without potions of strength, speed, heroism, absorbtion, regeneration, healing, antidotes and fire resistance (what a fortunate coincidence but time will tell).

At the Cloakwood mine Crock made contact with Drasus and was chased to the edge of the map. He had to do area transitions a couple of times when the rest of the party joined in the fun, but then managed to get Drasus on his own and beat him up. There were several more transitions before Kysus was left alone and arrows soon shut down his spell capability before finishing him off. Rezdan and Genthore kept closely together; a single hit on Rezdan here caused a spell failure and I hoped that running round shooting would shut him down, but couldn't quite manage it through his shield spell and Crock had to race for the map edge (using his new boots of speed) to beat an incoming confusion. Finally Genthore was left alone and quickly killed. On his own Rezdan was caught without a shield and didn't last long against a hail of arrows (these are far better than melee against spell casters as they allow Crock to react to spells as well as having better APR to cause spell failure).
On down to Hareishan and her hordes of guards. As usual Crock stayed on top of the area transition point going backwards and forwards a number of times picking off the odd guard. Eventually Hareishan followed him through on her own and was quickly shut down and finished off.
Next to Daveorn where the battle horrors were persuaded to follow upstairs and dealt with separately (I noticed here that Crock was at the 161,000 XP cap). Back down for Daveorn and more arrow shots managed to kill him without him completing any more spells.
After flooding the mine Crock made his way to the city and bought up some high quality ammunition. Then tracked down the various tomes, the helm of Balduran, shield of falling stars and eagle bow. Crock saved against command when facing Jalantha, though he should have been OK even if he'd failed. There was another potential problem against Marek when he got hit by a double chromatic orb via sequencer (his saving throw was at 8 and therefore he was vulnerable even with the +6 saving throw adjustment). Ramazith was also trying a minor sequencer, but died before he could send it off.
Went to get the tome from Durlag's Tower before going to investigate the Iron Throne. The idea there was to read a scroll of magic protection and then use the stairs to separate enemies for easy disposal. However, I made a stupid positioning mistake and got stuck between Aasim and Gardush - going down to 24 HPs before killing the former and getting freedom to move. Most of the remaining opponents were killed by bow, though Zhalimar was actually a victim of Alai's sunfire.
A couple of narrow escapes there as a consequence of sloppy play, but Crock should have a pretty good chance now of finishing things off in BG1.

Killing Razemith doesn't make the citizens hostile, he is a nasty character after all, and if you had the Greyclan Episode mod, the Fist Elite actually join in to help you!
Instead of killing him, you could pickpocket him.

Nimbul kept stealthing, so I had to unstealth to draw him out, then hide as he started casting. I even had a sleep in the middle of the fight. Finally took him out, and headed to Beregost. Killed a couple of ghasts on the way, for nice XP.
I killed Tranzig using one of the dodgy kobold poison arrows, they have a small chance of poisoning me when used, but still really good against mages. His death identified the bandit camp on my map, so no need to muck about in Larswood or Peldvale. I stole the cloak of +2 CHA on the way out, so now CHA is 6. I have around 6k gold, and lots of unidentified gear, so I might be able to afford the shadow armor before I enter the cloakwood mines.
I am currently scouting out the bandit camp. I think I'll beat up the archers outside first, I'll backstab and run using the leather armor so I can still hide, but if too many collect in that spot, I may have to resort to the ankheg armor. I'll see how it goes. I may have to go and buy the amulet of fireballs, although it costs half of my current cash, so preferably not.

Crock, dwarf wizard slayer - final update
I've also come to a rather heartbreaking end with Crock. He safely passed through Candlekeep and came back to the city to call on Slythe. After showing himself he retreated to the entrance and waited for the first backstab. That was immediately followed by a potion of invisibility so Crock left the area and started running around with the aim of drinking healing potions until well again. However, Kristin followed so he quickly left the inn, put a green scroll on and healed before coming back to confront her. Some chasing ensued, but eventually Crock chewed through her mirror images and stoneskins.
Back in the undercellar Slythe did another backstab and went invisible again. Crock again countered by an area transition and running round while healing (not knowing whether Slythe had followed or not). Another backstab and another invisibility potion, but this time I stuck around for long enough to take a potion. That short period allowed Slythe enough time for another immediate backstab - only Crock's high HP total (and Helm of Balduran) saving him. For extra security this time he rapidly left the inn and went to another area to pay for healing at a temple.

On returning Slythe was now visible so Crock engaged him. He didn't win the initial exchanges so ran away - always keeping Slythe close enough behind to prevent him disappearing into shadows. An arrow of dispelling slowed Slythe down and got rid of his giant strenth and I thought that would pretty much bring an end to the contest. However, Slythe showed good intelligence by ducking into a side room to get into the shadows again rather than chasing Crock.
I immediately responded by leaving the Undercellar and drinking a few potions while running round to get to what I thought was a safe level of HPs - Slythe's backstabs so far had been 47, 55, 55 and 59. Theoretically, using a shortsword with a base range of 1-6 I thought the most damage he could do would be 67 following the above sequence so I stopped running round when Crock had got 69 and came back towards the Undercellar entrance. I wasn't really expecting Slythe there as I had already made 4 transitions without him following, but this time he had followed and a single backstab ended Crock's journey.
If anyone's got any bright ideas on how the damage was done I'd be interested. I had double-checked that Crock had put his bow away as soon as Slythe hid in shadows originally so it wasn't having a missile weapon equipped. Slythe had taken a frost giant strength potion, but that should have been dispelled, although it's possible I suppose that he took another one and I missed the text entry.

Ghrius the kensai absolutely mullered Cloakwood mine (Drasus went without reply, Genthore missed as Kysus and Rezdan exploded and so on until the battle horrors each went down in under a round). He then came to grief in the Iron Throne HQ after killing the four casters. The doppelganger hit for 8 damage then Ghrius collapsed. One or both of Zhalimar / Gardush must have hit with criticals. (Game-time was 90% complete so he reloaded and was battling Sarevok when Tazok arrived to both hit together. 2nd reload saw Sarevok and buddies killed).
Ivy the halfling assassin got a bit further but couldn’t get enough room stay to safe against Slythe. (Careless on my part, she reloaded and got Sarevok about 15 minutes later, finishing with a dagger of venom backstab of 33. I had about 25 screenshots to do a backstab collage).
Blyus the wild mage went for Silke at level 2. Survived a lightning bolt thanks to two Larloch Minor Drains. Silke ran inside the Red Sheaf Inn and Blyus followed to cast another drain only to get a second bolt up the wotsit.

After clearing Candlekeep Wiven made a beeline for Tarnesh. Her nocturnal activities (!) are proving less than photogenic (!) so her CV of jobs is looking a little light at present.
First job was to get reputation up from 9 to 20 which entailed a few tasks off the beaten track;
10. Joia.
11. Marl.
12. Firebead.
13. Brage.
13.
14.
15. Drienne.
16. Ardrouine.
17. Farmer Brun.
18. Bjornin.
19. Tamah (from the shadows).
20. Charleston Nib.
(Greywolf and Hulrik’s cow available if required. 8 more in the city, 1 for reputation +2).
Two times were retrieved after Farmer Brun; both from shadows with minimal combat. New stats.
Fuller’s dagger +1 was traded-in for the revenant golem dagger. With reputation at 20 and a slight charisma boost this is traded-in for the dagger of venom as well as purchasing armour, cloak and amulet. A reserve kit of potions is also kept handy.
36 kills, Meilum. Game time 1h45 so a reasonable stroll and trying to take no risks (although the temptation to deal with the other Wiven in the city might prove fatal).

Time for Nashkel Mine, float like a butterfly.

Sting like a bee.

Sleep like a baby.

Drive your enemies round the twist (running between shown position and portrait to hide).

Act first and ask questions later.

If at first you don’t succeed, try again (hiding at southern-most point).

Tidy up the mess once you’ve finished (unable to hide, or escape).

Session time 15m, total 2h.

Nimbul leaps out of his boots in shock. Tranzig survives a backstab but not the poison.
The bandit camp is cleared one enemy at a time with no rest. Ardenor Crush needs two backstabs to die from poison while Taugosz Khosann proves very difficult to hit. This could have taken a long time but Wiven has found a nice corner to backstab and fade almost instantly. After a shopping trip (sales not purchases) she rests until nightfall and sneaks into the main bandit tent.
Venkt dies immediately and Britik foolishly follows Wiven outside. She misses an easy backstab but her second connects and the poison finishes him off. Hakt and Raemon are stood together with bows at the ready - so marked men. Hakt takes a poison backstab then Raemon foolishly doesn’t follow Wiven outside - damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. A potion of freedom is used to sneak past spider and ettercap web traps, two guards at Cloakwood Mine Bridge are poisoned off and the area scouted out.
Wiven throws a oil of fiery burning close to Drasus and hides. The four mercenaries cluster together and the preferred target (Drasus) cannot be picked off. Wiven uses a cheap shortbow for the first time and hits Kysus before fading away. Genthore has reacted so Wiven backstabs him a couple of times then returns to shoot Kysus again - he casts shadow door. Wiven uses the tried & tested method of thief out-waiting mage and shoots him as he returns. Rezdan takes two sneaky arrows then mirror images so another lull follows. Rezdan is dead once his images expire and Wiven shoots a poisoned arrow at Drasus.
The arrow misses and Drasus is too quick for Wiven to hide so she runs towards the bridge. With no buffs active she only has her girdle of bluntness to help and tries to return across the bridge to find a shady building corner. Drasus is having none of it, racing to her destinations before her so she has to stay outside the encampment. She tries an attack and realises her front-stab is quicker than his blunt weapon and his defences have a ******. He is poisoned so she runs, but he is able to keep pace. After about a round she turns and hits again before running. A few seconds later she hits again and the mercenaries have been soundly beaten (didn't expect to be able to hit Drasus that easily).
Session time 1h, total 3h. Should pick up now with the boots of speed equipped!
(& the night-time screenshots remain less than impressive).
I don’t think Wiven has used any buffing potions other than the freedom, or required the amulet either. Doubt that will be the case for much longer.

My rig is modded to hell. I ended up using the Big World setup tool, which probably added a bunch of rule changes that I know nothing about, along with some NPCs, some items, and a few little quest additions. I tried to keep it relatively simple and did not add any of the mega-extensions. From my perspective, these mods seem the most relevant:
- SCS
- Hard Times
- Item Randomizer (randomized with every new game)
- BG Spawn (10 day respawn interval)
- No xp cap, but added DefJam (75%)
I will be entertaining myself by posting dialog or narratives about select moments of the journey, especially if they are dramatic. I am going to give myself the freedom to make up whatever details I want, even if they are only loosely related to the actual game. I probably won’t talk about tactics at all outside of the narrative. It’s all about story for me. If you find this entertaining too, great.
For my first run, I’m adding a house rule. No resurrection. Stone to Flesh is OK, Freedom scrolls are OK, but dead is dead. This may make the challenge impossible, but whatever. The story should be interesting. And I’ll have a chance to use all those NPCs I modded in. (Assuming I survive whatever manages to kill my party members, that is).
First post coming up in the next day or so.

Cloakwood mine has a lot of guards so Wiven thins out stragglers. The trick is to not be seen, and not to do anything like this. This room of guards fall one by one as they chase Wiven around corners into the dark corridors. Wiven quickly sneaks to the base of the mine (after a brief prayer) and kills the last guard before removing four traps.
A potion gives five rounds of magic protection (to level 5) against Davaeorn but Wyvern wastes much of it trying to backstab a moving target. After getting his attention Wiven removes some mirror images until the potion wears off, then backstabs until one finally beats the defences.
On to Baldur’s Gate, where Lothander, Marek and Ramazith are dealt with to obtain three magical tomes and a decent shortbow.
Assassin 8. 117 kills, Davaeorn.
Session 45 minutes, 3 hours 45 minutes total.

You used to be able to pickpocket the ring, but people exploited it to get two rings, one by pickpocketting and one by killing him. It was therefore made so that you could no longer pickpocket. A shame. There must have been another solution to the problem, but I'm no modder! Just play a bit with Shadowkeeper and Near Infinity.

Mittrek talked to Duke Eltan and the Duke asked us to investigate the Iron Throne. We do so, and Mittrek has to battle 6 baddies on the 5th floor all by himself - however, with pro magic scroll, fire resistance potion and ring, haste potion, regeneration and heroism, and of course arrows of detonation, Mittrek lays into the enemies - after 10 arrows, and a few axe swings on Gardush and the Doppleganger, all lay dead at his feet.

We intimidate info out of Thaldorn, report to the Duke, and he sends us to Candlekeep. We get framed for a murder we did not commit, and have to escape via crypts. We couldn't loot much, so just did the important loot (tomes/rings, cloak) and proceeded straight out. We had to fight a mass of dopplegangers, including a fake Elminister. Wand of heavens, arrows and our skeleton friends ironed out the problem nicely.
As for Prat and his goons, Mittrek volunteered to solo the enemies. A haste potion and arrows of detonation, plus a few defensive buffs was all it took for Mittrek to again slaughter these powerful dudes. Looting is tough, being full and all. Via protection from poison scrolls and free action rings x2, Mittrek and Joshua cleared out the spiders, getting the last level of the game (for Joshua) and putting the party at their level caps. We will all be 161,000 by the end of the game.
We had some mirror eyes potions, Joshua and MIttrek used them to clear out some greater basilisks. We leave the crypt and ponder our next move, probably heading to FAI to indentify & sell.
Party Gold (before selling): 90,000 (helps to have leader with 21 CHA - though not having to spend any money on arcane spells/wands/gear is probably helping more)

However, Smoke is now the advance scout for my new no-reload. I rolled up an illusionist/thief last night, so now I'll catch up to where Smoke is, then scout ahead with Smoke. This should keep the specific challenges fresh enough in my head for my no-reload to prevail.
Regarding Smoke's demise, the first bandit I backstabbed summoned just about everyone from the tent, so I ran like blazes, stealthed, switched armors, and backstabbed the mage (Venkt) with my kobold poison dagger. From then on I slugged it out, and finished off all of my healing potions in the process. Nevertheless I prevailed, and returned to the FAI for healing and to buy more potions.
The second assault went less well. The other side of the camp was still full of bandits, and also notably Ardenor Crush & Taugoz Khosan. I cleared the cave and all the buildings, set two traps in the cave, then backstabbed Ardenor, and ran for the cave. Inside I stealthed, switched armor, and backstabbed Ardenor again for the kill. However every bandit remaining on the map now entered the cave, and I simply hadn't bought enough healing potions. I reloaded and did it again slightly more intelligently. Finally it was Smoke and Taugosz alone on the map, so I lured him into a fight he wasn't equipped to win.

I thought I'd have a quick run with a wild mage to see how far he can get before he blows himself up - as you can see from his stats he has far too little common sense to refrain from casting spells
