Not a pure guess.

Enabling the extra feedback should help. I'm just trying it now, will post a screenshot if it helps but that is on the standard Slythe.

Here (special thanks to Phlydia and Dreppin)

& copied below - might not be as clear.

Edit, After checking his damage rolls appear to all fall between 4 and 9. Short Sword of Backstabbing is 1d6 +3 so 4-9 would tie up with that.

Non Critical: Damage roll of x = y (z) for 3x multiplier.
4 = 27
5 = 30
6 = 33
7 = 36
8 = 39
9 = 42

Critical: Damage roll of x = y  for 3x multiplier
4 = 54
5 = 60
6 = 55
7 = 72
8 = 78
9 = 84

I've removed my 4x values as I realised they were wrong. Best to try this on your install to get the correct figures.

Noora, half elf wild mage
One kobold is LMD’d, a second whacked with a quarterstaff. Two more to be LMD’d but something else happens - Noora made herself scarce and never discovered their fate for certain (paralyzed and chunked just out of sight).

Noora waits a decent time and then continues towards Meilum. It takes an eternity for the two skulltraps to explode despite his repeated proximity, and even after than and several LMD’s Noora has to resort to strength, mirror and chill.

Four half-ogres are easier to deal with despite dogs and gnolls joining in, and Bjornin rewards Noora with a magical shield which she can sell. Gnarl and Hairtooth are killed by a brace of skulltraps and Noora soon has a magical tome to read.

The preparation for Bassilus doesn’t go as planned but he is drawn into a pair of floating skulls. Two out of three skulltraps are carefully laid for Greywolf but a LMD almost backfires before he is through.

Noora is now a level 6 wild mage with 114 kills including a greater basilisk. Reputation is 20 but she has fluffed two "Friends" scrolls so will either have to try & find another or prioritise her shopping list which includes a staff, cloak, amulet and robes.

Thanks for that Gate.  I've added in the extra combat info text and ctrl Q'd Slythe into my party to test him.  I'm not sure that leaves me any the wiser though.  I confirmed that the range of his backstab damage (against someone with a helmet) would be from 39 to 59.  Here's a hapless kobold getting his minimum damage.
Posted Image
That means he couldn't have done 69 even with 24 strength (if he'd sneaked a storm giant strength potion when I wasn't looking).

The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps he actually attacked twice before I could react.  I wasn't aware of any lag in my reaction that would have allowed that, but I have noticed before that there's not much gap between his first and second attacks.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 15 (update 2 - 2 hrs 30 mins; total 3 hrs 45 mins)
Tyran, gnome berserker (Grond0), & Titas Adukaars, dwarf fighter/cleric (Gate70)

Nothing too taxing during this session.  Started off with improving equipment and reputation - Meilum, sirenes / golems, Brage and Greywolf helping out here.

On to the Nashkel mine to teach Mulahey a lesson.  The amazons were dealt with on the way to Nimbul and Neira, then on to Tranzig to open up the bandit camp.  That fell quickly with Taugosz being cut down by flying axes as soon as he started trying to chase Titas, while Britik lasted only a split-second after this screenshot.

Slightly unusually for us Spiders Bane was recovered on the way through the Cloakwood (though later sold) to the mine.  The party there were silenced leaving them open to a frontal assault.  Hareishan was bypassed on the way down to Daveorn.  Tyran offered Titas the protection of a magic-blocking potion to rush Daveorn, but he explained that dwarves were already resistant enough to magic and proceeded to chase down the mage to prove his point.

The duo have just arrived in Baldurs Gate ready for the next stage of their adventures.

Combat stats:
Tyran, berserker 7, 68 HPs, 167 kills.
Titas, F 6 / Cl 6, 63 HPs, 190 kills, 1 death.
Titas' greater speed, use of summons and dual-wielding gave him a clear advantage in combat strength during that session.

Noora, half elf wild mage
(still golden; assume dispel will remove at some point)

Ardrouine is helped and then Noora tries her luck against a trio of sirines. One sirine is skull-trapped but a second stands beside a skull to cast charm person - Noora is aura’d but saves (rolls 14 with save at 9) and LMD’s the sirine. A third sirine also casts charm person beside a skull, forcing a second save (also 14) and then manages to hit with a poison arrow. Noora retreats until the poisone subsides, heals slightly then tries a final skull trap. She decides to add another skulltrap but gets some unexpected help instead, and a combination of distraction, collateral skulltrap damage and a LMD ends the fight.

This approach is far too risky (it should be OK but the vagaries of skulltrap mean enemies can often get away with standing beside them .As soon as an alternate level 3 spell is learnt Noora will ditch it as unsuitable for a no-reload). Two uses of invisibility see Sil, two more sirines and three flesh golems avoided, then she starts identifying the loot cached by Black Alaric.

Noora is by now travelling under invisibility with 24 hour duration, breaking her journeys down to this time whenever possible. A 1 day journey sees a gibberling ambush and a LMD strangely allows her to escape from her attackers.

Time to investigate Nashkel Mine, using invisibility. A skulltrap clears three kobolds from a bridge while mirror images help avoid the two traps. A pair of spiders experience another surge then Noora casts invisibility to rest and move on to skulltrap a larger group of kobolds. Two more skulltraps remove more kobolds and a third sorts out a ghoul.

A skulltrap and LMD remove four final kobolds, allowing Noora to scout out the final area of the mine. Another surge means only one skulltrap can be laid, and a second surge means the next rest is interrupted twice. Mulahey is greeted with a skulltrap and declines to move so Noora could kill him with two more but that would be unfair. Instead she drags him round a small pond and watches in frustration as he barges past the other skulltrap (Red dot shows skull & oops, called him Bassilus there). She melees a skeleton to the ground then skulltraps a group of minions. Three kobolds remain so Noora starts to melee but they trigger the other skulltrap and explode.

Just Mulahey left, so Noora starts with an over the horizon round the corner skulltrap.  (oh dear, nothing suitable to stop his spells so will either have to run for the exit or cast invisibility if aura is clear). LMD disrupts his first spell, and the one after that. Same for his third and he panics. A fourth LMD is followed by chromatic orb (saved) and the penultimate LMD kills him.

Noora feels sorry for Xan, handing him his sword and a couple of spells to learn fluff before sending him on his way. With 50% of the Amazons blinded Noora decides to try her luck. A lone skulltrap means only one sighted and one blinded bounty hunter remain and a second skulltrap finishes them off too. Noora now has two empty level 4 spell slots so needs to go shopping. The Amazons have a pile of loot so the familiar has to walk flap around for now and some unidentified flame arrows are dropped.

After storing Joseph’s ring outside (can’t open the house door) a suit of armour is sold and Berrun Ghastkill takes the holy symbol of Mulahey. With 3 inventory slots left Noora returns for the flame arrows plus a longbow and splint armour. A rest to identify items is followed by a sale so the familar can be backpacked once more. Remove Fear and Shield are cast before approaching Nimbul, then a combination of chill melee and LMD are used to end his life before he can lift a finger against Noora. More stuff to sell.

Noora, wild mage 7. 173 kills, Greater Basilisk.

Noora, half elf wild mage
(Still golden, 2 colour changes that haven't been seen though it yet)

Tranzig wasn’t expecting this; neither was Noora.

Noora has a running battle in the bandit camp with one or two surges and after clearing several enemies she deals with an emotional Ardenor Crush. After an unusually stony buffing Noora encounters Taugosz Khosann with only three LMD’s remaining so he gets those, a chromatic orb then succumbs to chill attacks.

After another store run Noora returns to clear the remaining bandits. She rests and sneaks inside the bandit tent to cast skulltrap, emotion, skulltrap. Raemon is killed, Hakt and Britik are emotioned out but Venkt is still on his feet so a few spells are traded.  Most are foiled by opposing mirror images before a serious LMD competition ensues (previous screenshot shows the early start Noora made with these).

Both end together, Venkt switches to throwing missiles but Noora thinks she has things under controls so attempts to cool Venkt down with a chill touch but instead cranks the battle up to 11 with a Burst that incinerates Hakt and Ender Sai (reputation drops from 20 to 10). Venkt is just out of range so Noora moves in to apply a quarterstaff of chunking. Britik is already badly wounded and another solid hit chunks him too.

Postscript; Noora runs her fingers over a Friends scroll, but fluffs it. That's 3 times she has failed to scribe that one.

Makes sense. That's what it should be in theory on Core wielding the Short Sword of Backstabbing with GM in small swords and a strength of 18/20.

Noora, half elf wild mage
The day gets off to a bad start, with a venemous spider bite on the way to the shops. Fortunately neither of the wyverns managed to get their teeth sunk in and a green potion was readily available. Cloakwood is traversed under invisibility and with a potion of freedom and two guards at the hidden mine are skulltrapped but one requires a LMD too.

Drasus and his gang are describing how they each are going to kill Noora, unaware that she is stood invisibly by them. She moves away and buffs before tossing an oil of fiery burning at their feet. A second oil toasts Kysus and draws the others out. Noora retreats to the bridge and casts skulltrap gems. Not good, she retreats and casts a chromatic orb at Genthore. Drasus must have stopped while Rezdan is summoning monsters.

Genthore hurls an axe so Noora moves in only to see Rezdan casting horror. Noora has Remove Fear active so casts a skulltrap which gets Rezdan through his mirror images and also injures Genthore. She moves in and lands an unexpectedly huge blow to chunk Genthore. Time to hunt for Drasus with invisibility another gem in her backpack so it will be a visible search.

First though, an ogrillion. Then back to where she thinks Drasus is. He resists two unsighted emotions so Noora casts chill touch and moves in to start with a flame arrow. He is already badly injured and another hit doesn’t help. Noora moves back a bit to LMD him. The next melee sees Noora miss and Drasus hit but another LMD is added. Noora hits as the near-death Drasus misses. Another LMD and one final hit have Drasus beaten.

The last spell of the day finally changes the golden colour, well partially.

Noora, wild mage 7. 210 kills, Greater Basilisk

Maybe he quaffed a Violet Potion...

((6+3+5)x4)+14 = 70

:P

EDIT: Assuming everything you said is accurate (no bow, hat on, Core, 69 hitpoints) then I agree it isn't entirely clear what happened.

Slythe's follow-up swipes can be unusually quick in my experience.

Could you have duplicated him with area transitions?

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 15 (update 3 - 2 hrs 0 mins; total 5 hrs 45 mins)
Tyran, gnome berserker (Grond0), & Titas Adukaars, dwarf fighter/cleric (Gate70)

A pretty clean end run for the duo.  In Baldur's Gate they started off by acquiring useful equipment.  The ogre gauntlets posed no problems this time around, before picking up the helm of Balduran.  Tyran's rage expired just before finishing off the maulers to get the +2 axe, but the helm of glory was secured well within the 10 rounds.  Ramazith's tower provided a +2 ring & intelligence tome, while the wisdom tome, Eagle bow, cloak of Balduran and shield of Falling Stars were also obtained.

The Iron Throne party were left alone, as was Rieltar in Candlekeep.  Titas looted the tombs and bashed his way through some dopplegangers to get to Prat's party.  They caused more of a problem than I expected - a bouncing lightning bolt from Prat did significant damage and a flame strike and scorcher resulted in Tyran beating a retreat and leaving the finish in Titas' capable handshammers.

The last tome was recovered from Durlag's Tower before Slythe handed over his invitation.  At the palace there was no attempt to save Liia, but Belt was only scratched a bit as the potioned fighters took toll of the dopplegangers.  Titas led through the maze, picking up his last level from a pair of skeleton warriors, before the Undercity party was evaded on the way to the temple.

Sarevok was encouraged to come out to play by a dispelling arrow, but this time he had a bit of company.  Angelo attempted to dispel Tyran's potion buffs, but in vain; there was no such problem for the arrow he got in return and he quickly fell.  Tazok also put in an all too brief (at least from his point of view) appearance, but Semaj stayed safely away leaving Sarevok to his fate.  Initially a few missiles wore Sarevok down, but then the duo converged to attempt a more satisfying melee finish.  Sarevok did get two heavy hits in on Tyran and he was starting to run away when Sarevok realised he'd had enough punishment.

Titas managed a bit more excitement by running into the Undercity party on the way out, but a quick retreat and sanctuary allowed him past, while the party bickered among themselves (an occupational hazard when you're using exploding arrows).

Combat stats:
Tyran, berserker 8, 76 HPs, 206 kills.
Titas, F 7 / Cl 7, 71 HPs, 228 kills, 1 death.

Good idea - I hadn't thought of that one.  That would certainly be a possibility as Slythe does duplicate relatively easily and while it doesn't seem likely to me that a single Slythe would have hit me twice without noticing, a pair of them could definitely have done so.

Noora, half elf wild mage

Final update... so a bright and gaudy colour thanks to the last surge.

Noora survives four wild surges.
- Target self too. Fortunately was invisibility and not skulltrap.
- Spell cast and refreshed as if rested.
- Burst instead of skulltrap.
- Burst saved instead of chromatic orb.

Hareishan and her guards were killed off a few at a time. The last 3-4 forced an invisible rest.
Natasha fell for skulltrap, 2xLMD and a hefty quarterstaff.
2 Battle horrors lured into several skulltraps.

Davaeorn got a skulltrap, teleported onto two more skulltraps to get badly wounded, survived two more skulltraps but cast dire charm. Noora was too slow with the greenstone amulet but made the save so cancelled the action (head in hands) and attacked again.

Davaeorn cast hold person and again the amulet selection was too slow (when will I learn - will be doing this the Grond0 way in future with a potion blocking 5th level spells & lower). She failed her saving throw and he summoned an ettercap and switched to melee. One dead wild mage.

Edward the sorceror entered the challenge, then exited.

Things started out looking pretty inauspicious when Carbos sank his dagger into his flesh. He just barely made it out of Candlekeep.

Later, he ran into a vampiric wolf pack outside of the Lathander temple in Beregost. He fled into the temple in terror. The pack followed him inside. He didn't stick around to see what happened to Keldath and his priests.

He went to High Hedge, and didn't have enough money to even look at the goods, much less purchase anything.

He led his party on a treasure hunt in the wilderness. On the way through a mountain pass, an army of Gibberlings, led by a Ghast, surrounded him.

And the curtain falls on another run.

Abner - elf wild mage (update 1)

I thought I would see if a wild mage in BG2 could make an impact.  So this time, rather than use spells, the intention is for Abner to go through BG1 relying only on items and darts.  I've also reverted to my basic BGT installation, rather than use the much more extensively modded game I've been playing single player with recently.
Posted Image

Thus far Abner has just completed his training in Candlekeep and is now ready for more serious adventuring in the wild.

My cleric's run in SoA has come to a halt due to major bugs. Will have to do fresh installation.

I therefore thought that I would do another quick run.
I created a cleric and created for him an amulet that I thought would protect him from sirene's magic. It didn't! :(:crying:

Consolations to the recently ended runs. I got back from my Uncle Cliff's memorial (was 5 hour drive there, 4 hours for the memorial/visiting afterwards and 5 hours back same day with a 6 year old and a 11 year old), so perhaps I can get some time to get to Mittrek - not tonight though, chess club. Tomorrow looks good. Big turnout for the memorial, more than 300 people, and standing-room only, about 30-40 people had to stand up for 2 hours.

Candlekeep: Firebead, Fuller, Carbos, Shank, Hull, Reevor, Dreppin, Phlydia.
Friendly Arm Inn: Joia, Samuel, (not handed in Unshey’s girdle).
Beregost: Marl, Firebead, Mirianne, Bjornin, Karlat.
Nashkel: Oublek, Noober, Brage, 3 pelts for storekeeper, an emerald to Oublek.
High Hedge: Melicamp (saved).
Cloudpeak Mountains: Dryad, Drienne.
Rock Garden: Rescue Tamah (stone to flesh), all basilisks (green protection from petrification).

Reputation 20 purchases: Cloak of Displacement, Greenstone Amulet.
Weapon upgrades: Long sword +1 (Neville) then Varscona long sword +2 (Greywolf)

Nashkel Mine
Even with the cloak and girdle equipped Nael takes several kobolds arrows which force several rests, many of which see further combat. A kai takes two huge spiders out in one strike each and a second kai is disrupted so a kobold commando is killed the traditional way. Mulahey is led a merry dance round a pool, taking a hit as he retreats and giving Nael the chance to fight his minions a few at a time without risk of spells. Nael is unscathed so loots the corpses and prepares for the half-orc cleric.

Amulet charge 1 and kai are enough to scare Mulahey and to add a killing blow. Mrs Joseph and Berrun Ghastkill are given their respective news and another wolf pelt is sold at the store. Nael weighs up his chances against Nimbul, reckoning his 65hp is enough to out-last a horror spell should the worst happen. The worst happens...

Nael recovers in time to chunk Nimbul but four sets of Magic Missiles have taken their toll, disrupting a heal spell. Nael has glugged a healing potion after 3 of them but with 22hp left he was never at serious risk.

Tranzig manages to cast Armour and two Melf Acid Arrow spells before expiring. Nael heads to High Hedge to sell his equipment then goes on a treasure hunt. Starting with potions of hill giant strength, heroism, clarity and speed to clear three sirines without injury. Then Sil and two more sirines, again without injury. Completed with a switch to the girdle of bluntness and potion of absorbtion for three flesh golems but these required a couple of healing spells. Three worgs manage a critical hit so Nael glugs two blue healing potions as he kills them for Ardrouine.

Kensai 7. 180 kills, Greater Basilisk.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #8):
(Areas explored: Ulcaster, Gullykin, Firewine Ruins, Firewine Bridge, Larswood, Peldvale, Bandit Camp, Cloakwood Forest #1 .)

Here are some news about my Avatar's run. It was quite slow as I took a sidetrip into the Skyrim's wilderness and been *frozen* there... but here we are. Zargal and Co were eliminated and we headed into the Ulcaster area. Icharyd was softened by Wand of Heavens and being strangely not immune to the cold blast was turned into the ice shards (loot lost). In the ruins Krimlor, being fire-protected, softened the wolfs pack by tripping the Fireball trap and then stand sturdy while we fired them with our missiles. In the Gullykin we eliminated one more assassins team (Nymph and skellies were great support there). Ogre Mage fell quick but Lendarn forced us to run back to the Jenkal house and back again and there was some scary moment when he hit Alesia with double Chromatic Orb sequencer. Alesia made her saves and fried him with scorcher in return. After some spider-hunt in the area east of Larswood we cleaned Larswood itself (Grond almost soloed it under the stealth). In Peldvale we saved Viconia but tried to rest there and were awakened by huge crowd of bandits. Not intended to take a risk of my low-hp friends to be oneshooted by their arrows I decided to flee into the Bandits Camp. Not much issues there except Pot being one-hitted by critical from Gnoll Veteran (a bit of carelessness from my side - sorry, Pot...). We raided all the tents, sold the loot in the FAI, raised Pot and returned to the Camp. In the main tent we opened with double Horror and Wand of Fear blast incapacitating all but Hakt who was Blinded next round and eliminated them all in safety (the only damage we took was Cassia hit once by Hakt). Cloakwood Forest #1 was cleared and we helped Aldeth Sashenstar. Skull Trap, Fireball, Horror and that's it. Aside from pre-buffs (and pre-summoning animals) the druids manage not to cast a single spell.

Here is some medley of screens of our current progress:

Nice Avatars update there Serg

Nael, human male kensai

Nael has shopped well and looks for Cloakwood the bandit camp on his map. His shopping list suddenly seems all messed up so he has to store various items for later.

A bandit plus Ardenor Crush and his hobgoblins are killed in one go. Nael fits in another store run, using the long journey to consider patenting a bag of holding. On his return the remaining bandits try their best against the cloak, girdle and boots (+12 vs missiles). Three are dead before an arrow hits, and a fourth dead soon after. The others are given a brief reprieve as Taugosz Khosann chases Nael away, giving him time to switch girdles on the run. After running out of bow range Nael casts kai and stands his ground.

One hit is answered with four from Taugosz so Nael runs a bit further and heals twice before using his second kai to better effect with a critical offhand blow (then I notice I forgot to swap girdles after all, his 4 rolls of 15-19 would probably have hit anyway).
Posted Image

A few more bandits are cleared, then another store run is done before finishing the last of the bandits wandering around the camp - this lot get several arrows in though. A rest or three is followed by a charge of the greenstone amulet. Killing Venkt proves to be painful but Hakt, Raemon and Britik are much easier and Nael glugs a healing potion after each death.
Posted Image

A potion of freedom used to pass through a series of web traps in Cloakwood. Nael decides to try fighting Drasus alone and successfully kills his opponent. After an extended rest he discovers Genthore is also easily drawn out and quartered. Another extended rest sees the greenstone amulet used for a third time as Kysus and Rezdan are cut down.
Posted Image

Time to potion up for Hareishan and her guards. The next set of guards get more of the same, the first battle horror is hard work but a regenerative potion and kai help against a second. Nael considers the magic blocking potion but his other buffs are still active so he pre-emptively uses a fourth charge of the greenstone amulet and drags the traps to Davaeorn (both combatents take 10 damage). Nael hits once as Davaeorn teleports then hits a decisive blow a few moments later. Another store run beckons, this time it will be at Sorcerous Sundries though.

Kensai 7. 260 kills, Greater Basilisk.
