Abner the wild mage was another victim of my carelessness. At level 6 he had been working through reputation quests and went to the basilisk area to save a stoning victim. However, I wasn't looking at the territory properly and instead he added to the statuary collection!

I've restarted Abner. This time, to speed things up, he's successfully recruited a quasit as familiar. That allowed him to deal with Xzar and Montaron and he picked up an additional 9 HPs for darting Shoal to death. In Beregost he talked to Marl & Firebead and returned Mirianne's scroll. The quasit killed Karlat (who was too busy thinking about what he wanted to say to Abner to fight back) allowing Abner to return Perdue's sword. Silke was prepared to put up a struggle, but the only spell she completed was a lightning bolt - the quasit was immune, though Garrick was not!
Fighting to get some boots of stealth from a hobgoblin got Abner to level 4 (6 more HPs) and he's just arrived safely in Nashkel.

Yes, not sure what to though as thief and mage are both highly tempting. He kicked Sarevok into touch last night, can't remember what screenshots I took so may do a brief post.Serg BlackStrider wrote...
Thanks, Alesia & Gate!Your Nael looks pretty nice as well, Gate. Are you planning to dual him?
Grond0, was going to suggest invisibility but then remembered you're not casting. Were you range equipped 2nd time, I tend to switch to melee weapon if skirting enemies to reduce the risk of a stray hit.

Nael considers the traditional approach to the Iron Throne HQ (casters then melee) and promptly discards it. His buffs start with a Protection from Magic scroll so he starts on Zhalimar Cloudewulfe and Gardush. Once these two heavy-hitters are down the doppelganger and four casters are knocked down like dominoes.

A race back to Duke Eltan sees a prized tome returned to Candlekeep. The Iron Throne buffs are still active so after Koveras frames Nael valuable moments are wasted until Tethtoril releases Nael into the catacombs. Nael obtains two magical tomes, some scrolls and a few potions before an invisibility potion lets him sneak past doppelgangers and Prat. Less than 120 seconds have elapsed since Tethtoril started the jailbreak!
Where oh where is my coronation invitation.

The Duchal Palace is a revelation. Nael has buffed well and scares one greater doppelganger before killing the rest. Once the running doppelganger is finished off both Belt and Liia are still alive.

The Thieves Maze is safely negotiated, all enemies removed but a potion of invulnerability glugged due to clumsy footwork against the second skeleton warrior and a lightning trap being activated. Rahvin and his gang have forgotten to guard the indirect route to the less abandoned than usual Temple of Bhaal.
An oil of fiery burning brings a hasted Sarevok out alone. A series of brief melee sessions ensue with Nael running around 3 times to glug a regeneration and healing potions. The fourth attempt sees Sarevok realise he should adopt a similar ploy.

Kensai 8, 305 kills, Greater Basilisk.
223k xp.
Will a mage or thief dual-class be more fun. Open to suggestion.

Yes I was. In theory I agree I should have switched weapons, but it would probably have been easier to just dodge the enemies - chalk another one up for laziness.Gate70 wrote...

I've tended to find going kensai - thief a bit of a slog. The kensai restrictions on the thief mean it's hard work to get to the point where use any items is available. If you want a challenge then go for that, but if not I'd suggest the mage.

"Gorion?" Alec asked, groggily. "What's going on?"
"We have to leave Candlekeep. They've found you. We must leave now."
"But..."
"No arguments. Grab your things."

No work today, so I thought I would copy Gate70 and see how far a kensai can run.

Hama has completed his initial preparations and is about to start the main quest line at Nashkel mine.
Rough track followed to date was:
- Candlekeep.
- Shoal (10 HPs for 2 levels).
- Beregost tasks (8 HPs).
- Basilisks (20 HPs for 2 levels).
- Reputation quests (8 HPs).
- Shop at Ulgoth's Beard.
- Sirenes & golems to get constitution tome (7 HPs).
The second and third flesh golem just made him use a few healing potions, but it was pleasant when the first one didn't get the chance.

Hama has completed his BG1 journeys and is now seeking a way out of a dungeon.
Mulahey, Nimbul, Neira & Tranzig all failed to put up any real resistance. Use of the amulet of shielding, a potion of absorption and a green amulet charge meant the bandit camp was similarly swiftly over-run.
A potion of freedom let him skip through the Cloakwood. Another absorption dealt with Drasus, while Kysus and Rezdan failed to outlast a magic blocking potion. He just ran past Hareishan. Frost giant strength, invulnerability, speed & regeneration made short work of the battle horrors, though they were then swapped for magic blocking for Daveorn (9 HPs to complete a pretty miserable set of HP throws).
In the city Hama picked up the tome of dexterity, Helm of Balduran and a +2 ring. Another potion of magic blocking allowed him to investigate the Iron Throne without the need for any violence. I talked to the Duke with a full inventory, so lost something (potions of some sort I think - they'd gone by the time I'd looted the tombs and returned invisibly to the city).
Defense, heroism and storm giant strength made short work of Slythe and speed, DUHM and kai were added for the palace. Liia died quickly and Belt took several blows, so I was pleased when Hama splatted bits of the last doppleganger attacking Belt over the ceiling.
Travelled invisibly through the maze and into the temple. A fireball from the shadows summoned Sarevok while Hama was renewing his speed potion. He then ran round slamming his staff into Sarevok every round or so. Sarevok was only able to even attempt a retaliation once before he gave up the ghost.
Here are Hama's closing stats.
I did remember to send Hama to strip a nobleman of his trousers before reporting back to Belt to be sent to Athkatla. However, about half-way through the dungeon I've only just realised he was supposed to have brought along the Claw and Horn of Kazgoroth, but left those stashed in Baldur's Gate

It may be (If he's Edward Norton that is...).

Dashing look, isn't it? I am fond of voluminous red hoods with yellow trim. But no, Alec (ie Edward Norton) is not me. It's a good thing too, because Alec is likely to become gibberling food.
Thanks for the luck, Alesia. Alec will need it.
Grond0, while you've swept the Sword Coast clean in only two posts, Alec has only just made it past Carbos, who stabbed and almost killed him with his first attack. So embarassing when that happens. I haven't had a run end before leaving Candlekeep yet, but I've come awful close.
Attempting the no-reload in the first installment is much harder than I remember it being in SOA. I might have to roll back some mods and go to vanilla if my skills (and memory) don't improve. Hard times turns off the money spigot in brutal fashion. SCS is reinforcing the fact that I cannot let anything or anyone come in contact with my character, ever. So far, that means a lot of running. And I don't think I've managed to reach any of the stashes affected by the Item Randomizer yet, so who knows what effect that will have.
My latest plan, which may be cheesy, is for Alec to summon a Pseudo Dragon familiar. I think the dragon will be able to make the party invisible, so that they can possibly travel from map to map without fear of Ogre mages, ghouls, or hordes of slavering gibberlings. Maybe then I can figure out how to get some experience, and maybe have Alec put away his pathetic little darts and actually start casting some spells.
Updates to follow perhaps tomorrow.

After a number of runs that I didn't really expect to go very far I'm hoping to make a more serious attempt on BG2 this time. I haven't had much joy from halfling fighter/thieves I've tried so thought I would try a dwarf this time.

Shorty F/Ts are an excellent choice for BG2 of course. Take care of him!

Thanks Alesia - I'll try. Along those lines I did start off trying to avoid taking any damage in BG1. Boon was lucky to avoid getting hit when ambushed on 4 occasions, but I did just fail in that aim in the basilisk area. I was trying to lead Korax in to the party there, but there were enemies in all the encounter spots. I tried sending Boon to lead a group of about a dozen away, while Korax went the other way, but hesitated slightly too long at one point and got hit by a Flind.
Boon has reputation at 20 and has bought things at Ulgoth's Beard. With his +3 staff he is quite capable of posting 3 figures with a backstab, but this is the best he's managed so far.
Boon is about to investigate the Nashkel mines. Here's his current record. All but the starting thief points have gone into stealth so far, but he'll start branching out into other areas next level. He's already picked up the constitution and wisdom tomes; I'm not intending to bother with the charisma one.

"I'll pay you double whatever you've been promised," Alec responded. "Wait."
Ignoring Alec, Karlat advanced, hefting a gleaming battle axe. Alec whispered the words to bind Karlat's eyelids shut, but the spell died on his lips as Karlat cut his head clean from his shoulders.
The End.

May I request an epic novel from Alain?
Request away! Although I fear that Alain will meet a tragic end far too soon for your liking. For you see, Alain's training at Candlekeep left much to be desired.
***
"Why did I ever agree to this hateful task?" Gorion scribbled in his diary.
Gorion was more than a bit uncomfortable with his assignment to watch over a Child of Bhaal. He was uncomfortable keeping the truth from the monks of Candlekeep. He was uncomfortable with the Harpers and their insane idea that anyone could try to get anything good to come out of the reincarnation of the Lord of Murder.
In every direction, Gorion saw a bloodbath waiting. He had been asked to protect Alain from other schemers. But in his heart, he knew that it probably was the rest of the world that would need protection from Alain, should the seed of destruction planted in his soul spread its roots across the Sword Coast.
Alain might look human, Gorion thought. But he is decidedly not.
***
Alain had never had a real teacher. Gorion -- his father? -- generally avoided him. Alain could barely remember a time when Gorion had taken much interest in his upbringing. And the monks were decidedly boring, always droning on about histories and prophecies and other such inane trivia.
So, instead of studying magic or survival skills, Alain occupied himself by sneaking flagons of ale from the cellars and playing pranks on Ol' Puffguts Winthrop with Imoen.
Last night, Alain and Imoen went into one of Candlekeep's food warehouses and captured a bunch of rats in a box. They let the rats go in Winthrop's common room, delighting in the screeches of the visiting nobles, and in Winthrop's clumsy and ineffectual attempts to sweep the rats out with a broom.
Still grinning, Alain marched back to his bunkhouse. He was surprised to find a strange man lurking in the shadows. And even more surprised when the man pulled out a knife and stabbed him through the shoulder. Even his worst pranks had never provoked such violent retribution.
***
Ulraunt looked up from his desk as the messenger entered his study.
"Lord," the messenger said, "Parda reports that assassins have been discovered in Candlekeep. They are apparently targeting young Alain."
"I see," Ulraunt responded. "Gorion has been using us. For good or evil, I care not. Tell him that he and his ward are no longer welcome here."
