Alain marched up to the giant gates of Candlekeep. He had rarely seen them from the outside before.

"Hey," he shouted. "Let me in!"

Hull stuck his head out from between the battlements atop the walls. "What now?," he called down.

"Gorion is dead" Alain said. "I need shelter. I need to escape the wolves. This is my home, Hull. I've known you my whole life. Why won't you let me in?"

"One too many pranks, kid," Hull said as he pulled back from the wall. "Try not to end up in a shallow grave."

"Come on, Alain," Imoen said, tugging at his robe. "Let's get away from these stuffy fools. I bet we can get into better kinds of trouble in a bigger city. I've always wanted to see the world."

"I suppose, Imoen," Alain replied. "But its dark and there are wolves and those gibbering monkey things all over the place. Playing with rats is one thing. But this is something else entirely. I think those assassins were after me. I think Gorion just got in their way."

"Aw, stuff it Alain," Imoen said. "We'll be fine. Just follow me."

Alain and Imoen trudged through the forest in the dark. Imoen had an arrow knocked. Alain held a dart in a white-knuckle grip. In the distance a wolf howled. Imoen reached out and stopped Alain mid-stride.

"Look," she said. "There's a man under that tree, watching us."

Alain gripped his dart harder. "Friend or foe," he called.

The man looked up from a flask he had been inspecting. He had a dark, oiled beard and a mischevious glint in his eyes.

"That depends," he said slyly. "But you look harmless enough. Where are you headed?"

"The Friendly Arm," Alain said.

"I could be headed that way," the bearded man said, shaking the flask upside down. "There's lots of fun to be had in the common room. And it looks like I need a refill."

"I can understand that," Imoen said. "What's your name?"

"Eldoth," the man replied, standing up.

"Alain," Alain said. "And this is Imoen."

"Charmed," Eldoth said. "Let's go get a drink."

The sun had begun to warm the forest again by the time Imoen and Alain spied the tower of the Friendly Arm between the trees. Alain let out a sigh of relief.

"That's an inn?" he said. "Its so tall."

Eldoth chuckled. "Its an inn now, but it used to be a stronghold of Bhaal, Lord of Murder. A pair of dwarves showed up a few decades ago and kicked the clerics out."

Alain shivered. "Lord of Murder? And people sleep there now?"

"Yep," Eldoth replied. "That's one of the reasons why they have all those silly rules about weapons. They even make wizards tie their thumbs to their belts before letting them in. People are scared that something about the place inspires violence."

"Interesting," Imoen said. "So Alain, can I tie up your thumbs? That sounds more fun than having to find a stuffy old book to appease those stuffy old monks in Candlekeep."

"Just try it, Imoen," Alain smirked.

Eldoth chuckled again.

"Look at this," Eldoth said, pulling a scroll out from under a rock. "Curious. How'd this get here?"

Eldoth passed the scroll to Alain. "Can you read it?"

Alain looked at it and shrugged. "It looks like some kind of spell."

"Cast it," Imoen said.

Alain muttered under his breath. The air began to twist and swirl. A gust of wind blew through the trees. When the wind stopped, a miniature dragon stood there, looking down at them from a perch on a nearby branch.

"Hello, Alain," it said in a clear voice.

"Who -- or what -- are you?" Alain asked hesitantly.

"I am Fisk," the dragon calmly replied. "I am your servant. I have chosen to respond to your call, Alain. I offer protection. I offer shelter. I will hide you from those who wish you harm."

"OK," Alain said. "That sounds interesting. How so?"

The dragon flapped its wings and the whole group shimmered and disappeared completely from sight.

"Woah," Imoen said. "Where'd everyone go?"

Alain, Imoen and Eldoth walked into the Friendly Arm Inn, trailed by an miniature dragon. The guards said nothing as they passed. The farmers working in the courtyard never looked up. The cows ignored them. The group was invisible to the unaided eye.

Outside the main door to the common room, a grim-looking mage leaned against the wall, fidgeting with his quarterstaff. He failed to notice as the group walked up the stairs and went inside.

***

"Bentley, old friend!" Eldoth shouted as he appeared in the middle of the common room, materializing as if from nowhere. "Pour a man a drink!"

Everyone in the bar jumped back, shocked at Eldoth's sudden appearance. Bentley frowned. He reached under the bar and pulled out a huge war hammer.

"You have the nerve to show your face, here?" Bentley shouted, striding out from behind the bar. "After what you did the last time?"

"It was just a harmless bit of fun," Eldoth said, scrambling behind a table. "I'm sure you turned a profit on the strength of my song, even if I did drink a few extra bottles of your wine."

Bentley sputtered. "Profit? You started a riot, man! People were too busy breaking furniture over each other's heads to buy anything! I'm still rebuilding half of my chairs and tables!"

"Its not my fault the worksmanship was shoddy," Eldoth smirked.

"Out!" Bentley shouted, preparing to swing at Eldoth.

"I see you need some more time to come to your senses," Eldoth replied. He leapt out the door, with Imoen and Alain close behind.

The grim-faced mage looked up as Eldoth stumbled backward out of the common room.

"Hey friend," he said, turning Eldoth around and showing him a sketch of a rather handsome-looking youth. "Have you seen anyone that looks like this?"

"Hmm." Eldoth said, frowning at the sketch. "Yeah, that looks like Alain. He's here with me."

"Really?" the mage raised his eyebrows. "Where?"

"Oh you know," Eldoth said. "I bet he's standing right here. Invisible-like."

"Interesting," the mage said, dropping the sketch and whispering a spell. His single form split into five. He raised his staff and chanted.

Alain managed to blind the mage with a spell before a magical sleep overtook him and he crumpled to the ground. When he awoke, the mage was lying dead in a pool of blood at the bottom of the stairs, one of Imoen's arrows through his chest.

"Serves you right, bard," Gellana Mirrorshade said to Eldoth, who lay immobile in the infirmary.

"That's unfair, Gellana," Eldoth pouted. "No one deserves what that mage did to me. I'll be hobbled for months."

"We'll add this to your bill," Gellana said.

"Great," Eldoth grunted.

***

Eldoth turned to Alain. "I'm sorry kid, but I'm laid up. I suspect it will be better for my health to let you go on alone. Someone's got it in for you, apparently."

"I've noticed," Alain sighed. "I'm sorry that you got wrapped up in this. But I truly appreciate your help."

"Yeah, whatever," Eldoth grimaced. "See you around, maybe."

Mittrek the Levle 8 Fighter - FINAL Update!

Mittrek and gang (Joshua the Undead Hunter, Hanna the monk and Paja the cleric/thief), made a final stop at their base at the carnival, picking up their golden pantaloons and other potions/scrolls, then sold at FAI and went to Baldur's Gate. Via sewers, we first stopped at the Iron Throne and went to the 5th floor, where we encountered Cythrandria. Not much prep really, some monster summoning 1 creatures, remove fear and attack - this was successful.

Next up talking to Slythe - once defanged with arrow of dispelling, wand of heavens was effective, plus the melees putting in their damage. We left Krystin alone to mourn her loss...

For the dukes, Hanna and Joshua gulped a strength potion, summoned a few skeletons, and lot of wand of heavens, while Mittrek of course supported with his bow - success here as well.

Thieve's maze next - jellies were no sweat, Battle Horrors mostly dealt with via wand of heavens..for the skeletal warrios, Joshua used a ProMagic scroll, invisibility and set off the traps, then party assisted - success! Lots of heal potion gulping though...

Next major challenge was the Iron Throne party in the Undercity. A problem here, didn't have any haste potions, but Mittrek approached with 120% fire resist and unloaded with arrows of detonation, withdrew a bit, fired some more and repeat. This defeated about 1/2 of them, but then 3 of them approached within sight of the party. Paja tried to assist but was slain! The party did mop up the remaining enemies...we looted her stuff, withdrew to a temple to raise Paja, rested and came back.

Time for Sarevok himself - battle was a bit more chaotic than I wanted. Standard potion/scroll buffs, like magic shielding and of course fire resistance. Sarevok did manage to summon all his allies so we had quite the fight on our hands. Joshua was getting pegged with a lot of arrows of detonation and Semaj dispelled his fire resistance so Joshua fled (away from party)...He fell. Hanna was getting pummeled by both Sarevok and Tazok and she too had to flee.

Paja and Mittrek took down Semaj, and then Angelo and Tazok left...wha??? Oh an arrow of detonation from Angelo must have killed Sarevok! Strange battle but success!

Mittrek and friends will all be continuing on to BG 2 (SCS ver. 21)...see you guys there.

The Story of BlackStrider & The Motley Crue (Update #9):
(Areas explored: Cloakwood Forest, Cloakwood Mines)

We fought our way though the Forest battling with various Spiders, Wyverns and other animals. As we haven't Jaheira among us the only Shadow Druid we fought was Izefia. Vs Drasus party we took *divide and conquer* approach and then entered the Mines. Krimlor shone there almost soloing and one-hitted many foes with his trustful hammer. Natasha vasted many of her spells on our skellies and then Krimlor charged. In desperation she cast Stoneskins at near death but +1 electrical damage from Ashideena finished her. Davaeorn is tough indeed (no one could doubt that) and forced us to retreat onto the previous level (hitting hard our low-hp comrades - Alesia and Pot - with MMM) and spent his spells on skellies. Eventually Cassia claimed the final hit on him with Wand of Heavens. Yeslick (and later Coran) joined the party in Joviar Juggler Inn and we flooded the Mines. With no ambushes on the way back we sold our numerous loot in Beregost and just arrived into the Baldur's Gate City.

Alain and Imoen wandered into Beregost at dusk.

"So this is what a real city looks like," Imoen said in awe. "Look at all the people! And there's no stuffy monks."

"It sure does make Candlekeep seem small," Alain replied. "I'm tired. Let's go find somewhere to sleep."

"Somewhere with a bed and a bath this time, please," Imoen said. "I'm tired of sleeping under hedges."

***

"Look at this," Imoen said, whacking a sign in front a building with her short sword. "Its called "The Burning Wizard. Ol' Puffguts never could think of a creative name for his inn. This is much more interesting."

Alain frowned. "Burning Wizard? No thanks. That's not an appealing image."

"Suit yourself, Alain," Imoen smirked. "Let's go to that other place. What was it, the 'Jovial Juggler'? That sounds fun."

Sunlight streamed through the windows. Alain rubbed his eyes and slipped out of his bunk. He felt refreshed, despite the rough straw mattress and rough-spun blankets in the peasant bunkroom. The strain of the past several days -- running from gibberlings and wolves, getting stabbed by assassins in Candlekeep, dodging spells in front of the Friendly Arm -- left him so deeply exhausted that he could have slept well just about anywhere.

Alain thought briefly about his dreams, but they had split into fragments and quickly fled from his conscious mind. He could vaguely recall a powerful white-haired sorceress offering instruction. Something about a man and an axe. Alain shrugged it off, opening the window and taking a breath of fresh air. The smell of jackaranda blossoms filled the room. Spring had fully arrived.

Imoen rolled over and stretched beneath her blankets.

"Hey Imoen," Alain said.

"Hey yourself," Imoen replied.

"It's a beautiful morning," Alain said. "I feel safe, finally. For the first time in days."

"Let's go play a prank, Alain," Imoen said brightly. "I bet we could have some fun."

"We just got here, Imoen," Alain said. "I'm not sure if that's wise."

"Aww, come on, it'll be fun!" Imoen held out a box. "I caught some rats in the Juggler's kitchen last night."

Alain smiled. "Rats, eh? OK, tell me your plan."

"Well," Imoen giggled, "You've got that invisibility dragon, right? That will make it so much easier to put these rats somewhere fun! Maybe not in the Juggler, since we need somewhere to sleep later. Let's go to the Red Sheaf and drop these into someone's drink, or into the inkeeper's shirt, or something, while we're invisible!"

Alain laughed out loud. He couldn't help himself. "Imoen, you are trouble."

Alain invited Fisk to come out from the pack. "What do you think, Fisk?"

"As you wish, Alain." The group vanished.

Imoen surveyed the interior of the Red Sheaf, hidden from sight. The inkeeper wiped the countertop. People gathered in small groups around the tables, talking softly or eating a bland-looking stew.

Imoen recognized a gnomish cleric of Deneir sitting at one of the tables. Finch, was it? She had been studying at Candlekeep, and staying at Winthrop's. Her head was buried in a book, as usual.

Imoen scanned the room for likely targets for her prank. Immediately, she began to gravitate towards a surly-looking dwarf who sat at the bar, looking intently at the door.

That guy looks as stuffy as Hull, Imoen thought. He needs a little rat inside that chainmail, for sure. Nothing like a little tickle to wipe away a frown. Imoen snickered.

She crept silently across the common room, sneaking up behind the dwarf. She gently pulled a rat from her box, petting it quietly. Pulling back the dwarf's collar, she dropped the rat in.

***

Alain watched Imoen from the back corner of the inn.  No, not that one! Alain thought. He looks mean! But he could do nothing without breaking his cover and startling everyone.

***
Imoen stepped back behind a pillar and crouched, watching for results.

The dwarf twiched a few times. Then he screamed and leaped off of his stool.

"What sorcery is this," he cried, drawing his battle axe. He turned to look behind him and saw Finch sitting there looking back at him, a surprised expression on her face.

"You!," he shouted. "You'll not get away with this!"

Finch leapt to her feet, frightened. As the dwarf approached, axe raised, she drew a flail and retreated behind a table.

Uh oh, Imoen thought.

***

That's Finch, Alain thought. I've got to do something.

He began whispering a spell to bind the dwarf's eyelids shut, hoping to calm the situation down before things got out of hand. He was too slow.

The dwarf's first blow cut Finch down. She dropped her flail. Blood splashed across her book. She twitched once and fell still.

Alain finished his spell. The dwarf screamed in outrage, swinging his axe wildly, unable to see what he was about to hit. People scrambled out of their chairs, spilling bowls of stew. The inkeeper ran out the door in to the street.

In the chaos, no one noticed that Alain had appeared as if from nowhere.

"Calm down, man," Alain shouted at the dwarf. "It's just a rat!"

The dwarf turned toward the sound and charged.

***

Imoen cringed. That never happened at Puffguts' place.

She watched the dwarf rush toward Alain, axe held high. Instinctively, she raised her bow and let an arrow fly. It took the dwarf through the neck, and he fell before he could split Alain in two. A rat scrambled over the dwarf's matted hair and fled behind the bar.

Just then, guards rushed in through the doorway, swords drawn, with the inkeeper close behind. One approached Finch, one the fallen dwarf.

"What happened here?" a guard asked.

"That dwarf killed the gnome," a shaken farmer said. "He went crazy. I can't explain it."

The guard crouching over the dwarf stood up with a piece of paper in hand. "Seargant, it looks like this was Karlat, the bounty hunter. He's got a contract here for the head of someone named Alain."

Viea, human female Kensai
Gorion was like a father to Viea “Put some decent armour on, you’re not going out dressed like that” right up until his death in an ambush. The Candlekeep chores had convinced Viea that her life was in danger but she now realised anyone close to her was also at risk so she chose to travel alone.

This is why little is known about her early days on the road. A brief contact with Imoen “we were like sisters in Candlekeep so I packed her a few potions and a magic wand when we parted”. Xzar tells how he and Montaron jouneyed with Viea despite her protestations “We headed south to Nashkel but she gave us the slip before we left the Coast Way”. So it was that nobody knew about the skeletons with throwing knives that forced her to glug a healing potion as she skirted High Hedge. Marl and Firebead said hello to her but that was all she had time for before exploring slightly off the (my) beaten path and running into a host of enemies including Ba’ruk. No doubt she gave them the slip before circling round to “rescue” Brage.

Her masculine kai shout (same voiceset as male charname and also as Abazigal!) has rarely been heard, and survived even less. A dead hobgoblin and a dead Melicamp are hardly good witnesses. Despite this her reputation notches steadily up to 20 thanks to a woodland dryad, Drienne,  Ardrouine, Tamah and Prism while her charisma increases (to 19) thanks to a tome of leadership,

It is rumoured she then killed every basilisk in a rock garden and every sirine near a lighthouse before killing the flesh golem guardians of Black Alaric’s cave. How do these tall stories start?

A group called the Iron Throne announce their plans to deal with Viea, saying how they nearly caught her at the base of Nashkel Mine and again in Nashkel itself (greenstone amulet charges just completed against Mulahey and Nimbul and pushing my luck). Their third attempt in a bandit camp is not announced but Ender Sai swears blind that Viea had mastered the amulet but instead glugged five healing potions before rushing outside, and five more outside before Venkt and his companions are killed.

The less said about Drasus the better, as far as the Iron Throne are concerned. Drasus was out-meleed 1 on 1 with a staff and girdle. Same for Genthore. Amulet charge for the mages.
Posted Image

Same for Hareishan. Buff up for her to Davaeorn. Drag a lightning trap into the room, clear a few guards while she casts another lightning bolt then kill her and tidy up what is left.
Posted Image

The only way Davaeorn can stop Viea killing him is by doing the job himself. Draw the horrors one at a time, use a kai each then use the amulet to rush Davaeorn. Add a potion of regeneration between horrors.
Posted Image

Viea, kensai 7. 255 kills, Greater Basilisk.
Edit. 14hp + 10 + 12 + 12 + 10 + 10 + 14. +1 constitution from tome.

I've got to grips with BG1 - still fail fairly often but over hundreds of no-reloads I can now take a suitable approach for most classes I play and the shorter the route the less likely a mistake. Wish I could say the same for BG2 but I think I am slowly improving in that respect.

Although I prefer BG1 I try to spend my time in BG2 now.

I expect that's taken about 4-5 hours to get to Davaeorn, not that fast compared to some. Once I have the boots of speed there is usually less than an hour remaining, less if I stuff it up.

Enjoying your story, what's next?

Alain pulled up a chair next to Imoen at the Jovial Juggler. He set a tankard down in front of her, spilling a little on the table. They sat in silence, sipping at their drinks.

"That's not what I thought would happen, Alain," Imoen said.

"I know," Alain replied. "I feel bad about Finch. She was always so excited to tell us about what she was discovering in Candlekeep's library. She didn't deserve to end that way."

"Its not our fault," Imoen said. "That Karlat guy was bad news. You saw the contract, right?"

"I heard the guard talking about it," Alain sighed. "I don't think Beregost was ever safe for us. I think we should hit the road. Get further away. Go somewhere where whoever wants me can't find me."

"We could try Nashkel," Imoen suggested.

Spring sunshine filtered through the forest canopy, dappling the cobblestone road with spots of light that danced in the breeze. Imoen and Alain walked side-by-side. After several hours of steady travel, the duo approached a steep drop, where the trail passed below cliffs.

Imoen motioned for Alain to stop. "This looks ugly. I don't want to get trapped against these cliffs by something nasty. Let me go take a peek on my own."

Alain nodded.

After what seemed like 15 minutes, Imoen came running back up the path. An arrow stuck out from her upper arm, and she had dropped her bow. "Hobgoblins!" she shouted. "Too many to fight! We've got to get out of here!"

Alain dumped Fisk out of the pack. The dragon looked up at him with a disapproving grimace.

"Fisk, do your thing," Alain said. "But wait until Imoen is in range. We're all in trouble if we don't hide."

The dragon coughed a few times and blinked to get used to the sunlight. Imoen approached at a run, a pack of hobgoblins hot on her heels. The dragon began to flap. Alain threw some darts, but they stuck ineffectually into the hobgoblins' thick hide, failing to slow them at all.

Imoen reached Alain. "Umm, are we going to run?"

"We're going invisible," Alain said.

"We better do it soon!" Imoen cried as the hobgoblins started to surround them.

The dragon gave one final flap, and the whole mess of them vanished -- Imoen, Alain, Fisk and the hobgoblins. Imoen slipped into the trees. Alain went the other direction. Alain could hear confused grunts from back on the path.

"Where'd they go?"
"I dunno. Where'd you go?"
"Dunno. Can't see meself."
"Bugger all."

Imoen smirked in silence as she slipped down the path.
