Bpon has made further progress and backstabbed his way to Baldur's Gate.
Starting at the mine he worked his way down to Mulahey. A backstab, hide, backstab combination settled him. Back in Nashkel Nimbul only needed one attack. Meilum discovered the difficulties of fighting against someone with a speed factor 0 staff before Boon moved on to Tranzig. A critical miss gave him the opportunity to turn hostile, but Boon was already hidden again and didn't miss the second time.
At the bandit camp none of the bandits survived their backstabs except Taugosz - a couple of demonstrations of weapon speed finished him off. Inside the tent he failed to hide again after killing Venkt, so ran outside. Britik followed, while Raemon and Hakt waited inside for their turn.
Sneaked through the Cloakwood, other than picking up an invulnerability potion from Laskal. At the mine Drasus got a stealth shot, backstab, weapon speed combo. The others just got backstabs. Sneaked past Hareishan and down to Daveorn. Tried to disarm all the traps from the shadows, but his skills weren't quite up to it yet. Backstabbing Daveorn caused a couple of battle horrors to appear; they were led away before Boon came back to Daveorn and used a potion of magic blocking before finishing him off in straight melee. The remaining horrors were backstabbed, as was a jelly.
In the city picked up the tome of dexterity, then went after Ramazith. His positioning seemed to save him from an opening backstab and the second attempt missed, but his improved invisibility didn't help him against the third.
After picking up the Helm of Balduran Boon has removed a rival claimant for a tome of wisdom and will soon be departing for his childhood home.

Viea slips into Boots of Speed mode and life blurs - hence the limited commentry.
Iron Throne HQ. Protected from magic so order is Zhalimar, Gardush, doppelganger, four casters depending who is closest.

Slythe. Drag him back to the exit to reduce transition times. Down in a round.

Coronation. Thought both dukes survived - then realised only Liia did. Lucky escape (plus one doppelganger ran downstairs so had to go get it after the screenshot).

Thieves Maze. Rushing this and buffs obscure damage until they cleared the icons. Suddenly realised Viea was taking a battering but both doom guards and skeleton warriors were dead at this point. The traps near these wall-marks were avoided, the missile traps towards the end of the maze were deliberately triggered to remove them.

Sarevok is drawn out with a oil of fiery burning, had 4 more but he didn't fancy being roasted. Viea starts well and does a few rounds of hit and run without return then draws a battle horror out. After killing that she tries a kai to stand her ground. Sarevok teaches her a lesson (and I realise standing there with 35-50hp as I have been is very very risky.

More hit and run. Viea has loads of potions left but decides to try another kai stand. Her first blow is a critical anyway and completes the job.

Just got to return through the maze, grab the pantaloons & Koveras' ring before reporting to Liia.
Viea, kensai 8 (233k xp). 292 kills, Greater Basilisk.

"He's not coming, Khalid," she said.
"OK. Let's read that letter from the old man again and decide what to do," Khalid replied, taking a deep pull from his tankard.
"You know what it says as well as I," Jaheira said. "First priority, find Gorion's charge. Second priority, keep a tight leash on him. Last, if possible, gather information about why all the iron around here lately has become brittle and useless."
"Gorion must be dead," Khalid said. "He was supposed to be here by now. I think we might have to give up on the first task."
"Not just yet," Jaheira frowned. "Let's go talk to that slimy bard in the infirmary again. I think he must know something he's not telling us. I think we took the wrong approach last time, just threatening him. I'll talk to Gellana. I bet she can bribe him to 'fess up with some whiskey."

Xzar looked at his map. "I know the road to Nashkel is around here somewhere."
Montaron snorted. "Who cares about the road. Just keep walking south. We've got a job to do and its high time we got it done. I want to get paid and go kick my feet up again at the Blushing Mermaid."

"Let's rest a bit," Alain said. "I think we've gotten away from those hobgoblins."
"Good riddance, too," Imoen said with a grimace.
"Here, let me take a look at that," Alain said. He probed the wound, then grabbed the arrow shaft in both hands. "This is going to hurt."
With a quick motion, he snapped the arrowhead off. Imoen screamed. As Alain pulled the arrow back and out, he grabbed her bicep, squeezing gently. Imoen's screaming subsided and her eyes opened wide in shock. Alain finished withdrawing the arrow and let her go. She pulled her arm out of her leather tunic and inspected the area where the wound had been. Her skin was whole. Flakes of dried blood fell off as she moved, but the wound was gone.
"Woah," Imoen said. "Since when did you become a cleric?"
Alain looked at his hands. "Did I do that? I have no idea how."

"I hear you," Alain yawned. "Let's go in."
Alain and Imoen went through the main door, but quickly stepped out again, slamming the door shut behind them.
"Not good," Imoen said. "How did you make that cleric so angry, Alain?"
"Don't ask me," Alain replied. "I've never seen that woman before in my life."
The pair ducked into the shadows underneath the bridge leading into town. The angry cleric stormed outside. Seeing nothing, she spent a few minutes poking at bushes with her hammer and walking back and forth over the bridge. Then she sighed, holstered her weapon, and went back inside the inn.
"I think we're going to have to go sleep in that farm field across the river tonight, Imoen," Alain sighed. "I'll take first watch."

"Who lost our money pouch?" Imoen snapped back.
"I didn't lose it, Imoen," Alain said. "That knave stole it."
"You're just clumsy," Imoen said. "I'm keeping the money pouch from now on. I wanna buy some of those pretty belts, and I bet you could use some of those scrolls. And it would be kinda fun to go gamble on some cards or dice, don'tcha think?"
"Well, we can't." Alain sat down on a trunk next to a colorful tent. "This carnival should be shut down. First we almost got killed by an ogre "actor" in that loony play. Then we inadvertently interrupted a feud between two powerful mages, only barely escaping with our skins. Now that stupid knave takes my coin purse. What next?"
"I have no idea, Alain," Imoen sighed. "Exploring the world isn't quite as care-free and fun as I thought it would be. I used to dream of the day I would leave Ol' Puffguts behind and make my mark on the world. I never thought I'd actually want to go back. Well, kinda want to go back."
"Alright Imoen," Alain said. "Let's go find a bush for the night. Maybe things will look better in the morning."

If anyone is annoyed by all of this storytelling
I appreciate storytelling as well. I'd do more of it personally if I could keep up with my characters.
But its making me care about my characters much more. The game has taken on a much different feel, more so than my typical no-reload runs. I'm really going to try to deliver something more interesting than a dead level 1 sorcerer. I've never played so cautiously before.
That's an important point. Having a personal connection with your character can make a huge difference in no reload play. I find that even simple things like choosing portraits with care, writing a little backstory, and making personal items can help. Once a character has a bit of personality -a bit of life- I become far more invested and cautious.
Best,
A.

Boon, dwarf fighter/thief
Boon has completed his BG1 journeys and is following Viea into the unknown.
His final session opened with Marek. He provided some instant education before suffering a hide behind pillar, backstab, hide behind pillar (you can guess what came next) move.
Boon killed Thaldorn (he whined too much), but left the Iron Throne party alone. In Candlekeep, in order to get his last thief level, Boon for once was guilty of pre-meditated murder there. The extra 25 for find traps (up to 75) proved enough to remove all the traps in the catacombs before he sneaked out.
Back in the city he used the recovered tomes - getting his lore up to a respectable 51 for a BG1 thief. Slythe found himself on the wrong end of a backstab for a change before being finished off in melee. Boon did try a pick-pocket on Quenash, but didn't need the cloak so just let her keep it when she got annoyed.
At the palace a potioned-up Boon was too much for the dopplegangers - both dukes survived.
A potion of absorption allowed Boon to set the traps in the maze off to irritate the skeleton warriors. Although he only had partial protection from fire he took no damage from the fireball trap - presumably the combination of boots and potion of speed allowed him to outrun it. He sneaked through the Undercity to a not-so-ruined temple.
I think Boon's has been an entirely risk-free journey and I didn't try anything fancy against Sarevok. A stealth dispelling arrow attracted his attention and Boon then ran round using his superior weapon speed to attack. Sarevok only got one attack in, which was a critical miss. Just for a few extra style points Boon hid behind a pillar to finish things off with a backstab.
Here's his record after the fight. The Claw of Kazgoroth is depressing his constitution - that wasn't needed in BG1, but I equipped it just to help ensure it wasn't left behind.

she got caught by another radiant mephit at the 4 portals after shutting the first two down. She survived that knockout too and had the choice of running away to heal from half health or continuing.
She ran forward and almost had the fourth portal defeated but got caught a 2nd time by the same radiant mephit. That wasn't such an issue but the third portal was untouched and that mephit had (again from memory) an irritating fire attack that took her HP down to zero before she could get up again.
I won't bother posting in the BG2 forum, just thought I'd better advise her time ran out last night.
I don't feel like a kensai again, not sure what to roll at this point. Good luck folks.

I think you were talking about dualling to druid. What about trying to start with one?

Yamo : Monk
So I looked at the options available and thought it’s been a while since I unleashed a monk on BG1. I dug out a screenshot of The Green Yamo (who I used to multiplayer in a game from the early 80’s and tried again recently on an emulator : Bruce Lee).
Wish me luck (the nappy looks even less appealing than a female charname in ankheg plate).

I like the variety. Practice helps as does travelling by night plus using shadows from trees and buildings. Having a plan b for when hide fails is also important. Monk speed and the cloak of displacement with a girdle of piercing help a lot. Take level 4 with the boots of stealth for example. This;

Or passing six sirines and three golems;

Or Nashkel mine, stopping only to return a dagger or sleep in the shadows. Maybe kill two spiders, the four kobolds outside the final hideout (clear getaway if required), the kobolds inside, the minions (1-2 at a time but they could be fought all together by positioning so the pool stops more than 2 attacking at once) and finally Mulahey. Monk reach, reaction and speed means you can often get away before an enemy reacts. This time I used no buffs, although he saved the stunning blow.

n.b. I'd usually use a greenstone amulet, strength and healing potions to slug Mulahey into submission as it is less risky.

Thanks for the encouragement on the storytelling. I'm likely to post less during the week, however... I can't really turn in a creative writing project to my boss and work and pass it off as something I should get paid for.

For this run I've added in a few BG2_tweaks to the basic BGT installation. In particular Bruce has unlimited item stacking and there should be a bag of holding somewhere to eliminate the inventory management problem in SoA for a solo player.
Bruce is intended to dual to a shapeshifter at some point. Given that intention I decided he should not use my normal missile-heavy approach in BG1, but instead stick to dual-wielded clubs. As rolling ideal scores for a fighter - druid dual is virtually impossible Bruce ended up with severely compromised dexterity (5).
His relatively poor AC and melee approach has meant Bruce has taken quite a bit of damage so far, which has meant he's done a lot of resting. On the plus side all his HP rolls have been excellent and he's never been near death. He's just passed through the gnoll stronghold area, picking up the bracers of dexterity and the tome of charisma (needed to making dualling legal).
