Corey, that fireball looks really scary. Veeton and party must have gotten quite the sunburn standing so close to the conflagration...

If an enemy were to do that to us (5 fireballs at once), that would kill most of us, except probably Veeton and Kagain, who have the party's only fire resistance gear. As it was, only Shar-Teel got singed to 1/2 life. The key to do this is to use the Horizontal Line Formation, so that we can immediately toss our mojo before the Ogre Mages have chance to do any spells of their own, and also so we take minimal damage for our own fireballs. Needless to say, the player better be well versed in throwing fireballs or you can kill oneself (I've done that a few times in a no-reload, usually Imoen killing me!).

The party has been throwing around 2x fireballs in many encounters, so we got our aim down pretty good, I would think...

[ALAIN AND IMOEN CONTINUE. PREVIOUS POST HERE.]

"Are you sure we need to visit High Hedge?" Imoen asked nervously. "I've been hearing about this Thalantyr. He doesn't sound friendly at all. Hiding in a tower all by himself. He probably cooks and eats people who visit him without invitation."

"We need him," Alain replied. "What if that strange-looking robe we picked up off those bandits who attacked us by Fisherman's Lake is cursed? I know. Just put the robe on and strut around a little bit. Maybe you'll turn into a toad. Or maybe you'll switch genders. That would be fun." Alain chuckled.

"Let's just sell the things to Feldepost," Imoen grumbled. "He'll pay us something -- they look valuable enough. I have a bad feeling about this. Maybe Thalantyr will turn you into a toad if you walk into his tower."

"Now you're being the baby, Imoen," Alain said. "Feldepost wanted to pay a lot less for the robe than I bet it's worth. We need Thalantyr. Let's go."

*******

Jaheira and Khalid pushed open the door to the Nashkel Inn and stepped inside. Customers sat in clusters, quietly sipping from clay mugs and eating steaming bowls of stew. In the corner, an armored woman sat, a deep frown on her face, her eyes following the newcomers, unblinking.

"The kid must have come here," Khalid said. "Let's ask around."

"I'll start with that woman in the corner," Jaheira said. "You talk to the barkeep."

"Got it," Khalid replied.

Jaheira nodded to the woman in the corner. She inclined her head slightly in return. Jaheira walked past the fireplace, taking off her cloak and leaning her staff against the wall.

"Greetings," Jaheira said. The woman stared at her in silence.

"You look like you have a sharp pair of eyes," Jaheira said, pulling up a stool. "Have you seen anyone in Nashkel by this description?" She held out a rough sketch of a handsome dark-haired youth. He wore a golden ring through his left eyebrow and his mouth was turned up in an impish grin.

"Who's asking?" The armored woman grumbled, fingering a spiked mace at her hip.

"I can pay for information, if its good," Jaheira said.

"I don't take kindly to competition," the woman said. "I'll offer you a bit of professional courtesy in this matter, however. Here's my advice: leave this bounty to me."

"Bounty?" Jaheira said, surprised. She quickly regained her composure, sitting perfectly still. "It's a rare job that comes with no competition in our line of work."

"True," the woman replied. "But its also a rare job where our employers care if we get hurt. I repeat: leave this bounty to me. Unless you'd rather not have your head attached to your neck."

"Very well," Jaheira replied. "I'll leave, as a professional courtesy."

"I'll let you go," the woman replied. "Professional courtesy."

Jaheira motioned to Khalid. He got up from the bar, wiping froth from his lips and passing his tankard back to the innkeep. The two walked outside into the fading evening light.

"What did the barkeep, say, Khalid?" Jaheira asked as they walked down the street toward the Belching Dragon.

"No sign of the lad," Khalid said. "If he was here, he didn't stay at the inn."

"We've got a problem," Jaheira said. "Bounty hunters. We better find him before they do."

Will came to an end at level 4 / 4 / 5 - a victim of Sirenes. Normally I use ranged tactics or spells on these, but this time chose to attack with his staff thinking his helmet of charm protection would deal with the charms. It did, but I hadn't realised that the upgraded sirenes have the same confusion on touch ability as dopplegangers under SCS - he duly got confused and never came to his senses.

@Grond0 - just letting you know that even in vanilla, the Sirenes have a confusion-on-successful-touch attack. This happened with my run with Veeton, Kagain got confused when I didn't notice his greenstone amulet charge expired, the party was at a considerable distance but rushed to his assistance. And Kagain was in fact in melee, primarily so we can get the arrows of biting to use on the flesh golems.

Veeton the Fighter/Conjurer - FINAL BG 1 Update

So Veeton is ready to investigate the Baldur's Gate Iron Throne HQ - except he doesn't want to use arrows of detonation, since the bow users are Veeton and Imoen (the mages of the group). Therefore, Veeton has the party try something different. Kagain puts on invulnerability, frost giant, haste potions, fire resistance (via spell and rings, over 100% in fact), and Shar-Teel does fire and strength and also gets a improved invisibility buff by Veeton. The idea was for these two to take care of the trouble on the 5th floor and let the party wait for the results.

Well, it didn't quite go as we had planned. As desired, Kagain drew out the enemy bad spells, however, Shar-Teel got confused and was out of the fight. Kagain quickly killed two of the casters, however he was taking a bad beating from the melees. Even though the party downstairs is unbuffed, I was reasonable sure Kagain had their full attention. Veeton and Branwen started healing Kagain (Kagain was at 25% health or so, though he does have a lot of HP (96)), and Safana and Imoen used their ranged weapons...with the party's help, Kagain was saved, and Sarevok's Acolytes were defeated.

The first level of the Candlekeep Crypts worked exactly as planned, no mishaps. Veeton got the tomes - Branwen already got two wisdom tomes this game, she'll have to be content with that.

Second level was also smooth - here's our treatment of the "Elminister" we met down there - 4 fireballs. Two survived, but they died fast after that screenshot.
Image IPB

Since arrows of detonation were a no-go, I tried a new strategy vs. Prat - it worked beautifully! Imoen and Veeton went invisible, Veeton on the right side, Imoen down and left, with Prat's group within visual range. We gave fire resist gear for Kagain, Kagain activated protection from magic, and got Prat's group's attention. Once they started attacking Kagain, Imoen and Veeton fired 2 fire balls each - that killed all of them! Very smooth, Kagain didn't really take any damage even. We need all the experience we can get, so Shar-Teel cleared the spiders, mainly with her protection from poison scroll and free action ring.

Time to sell then get the evidence on Sarevok. Cythandria was defeated by group haste pretty much (so fast, she couldn't even try to surrender), Slythe and Krystin basically defeated by dispelling arrows (these things worth their weight in gold). Duchal Palace, put summons to defend the dukes, then dispelled the dopplegangers' haste via spell, then had the party concentrate fire on any enemies near the dukes - complete success! Mountains of summons used, but was determined not to fail here again...

Ran into a little problem in the thieves' maze. I couldn't decide should I put Safana invisible to de-trap, or just use Pro-Magic scroll to set them off. Decided to use Pro-Magic scroll, but that was a little insane...I forgot the skeletal archers would just slay her quickly! She managed to set off 3 traps before she died...the survivors charged the warriors, setting off the last trap, but winning the fight. Fortunately I was ready for this situation, Imoen used a potion of perception and now she has 100% trap detection skill..though despite that she still set one trap later...nevertheless we got out of the silly maze. I did NOT resurrect Safana, we just don't need her.

For the Undercity Party, I sent Kagain invisible with AI off, and then sent summons alone to the enemy party to try to draw out their spells/arrows of detonation. Wasn't real effective, While buffing the party, I accidentally brought the summons back to the party and they brought back an ogre friend - oops! Was okay, just him so we killed it quick. We put protection from fire on everyone (cleric level 3 spell), haste and moved forward within visual sight of the Iron Throne party. We opened with 4 fireballs, then used melee/ranged fire. Only two survivors survived the fireball onslaught who were quickly mowed down.

Veeton was VERY close to level 9, about 1600 experience short - hey the skeletal warriors nearby could help with that! I put protection on undead on Shar-Teel, a strength potion and potion of fortitude (this saved her life, it doubles her HP). Well in vanilla, the undead scroll doesn't work against these enemies, and the party had to move up to saver her - we succeded, but ended up battered.. We also used up a lot of heal potions. I thought about trying something new against Sarevok, but decided against it, don't want to falter so close to the finish line.

This is our preparation for Sarevok (summons/buffs).

As usual when I play vanilla BG 1, Imoen crept up and cast a dispel magic scroll at the dais (out of sight) - this dispels Sarevok's and Semaj's buffs. Then she fires a fireball via wand also out of sight, and runs back to the group. Only Sarevok and Semaj come. Party concentrats fire on Semaj, who got stunned by Shar-Teel's darts of stunning. Needless to say, Semaj falls shortly thereafter. Here's the battle at this point.
Image IPB

Only the big bad boy left. We concentrate fire/spells on him, and to rub salt in the wounds, Veeton hastes the skeletons attacking Sarevok. Branwen does wand of heavens and then success!

Veeton is moving on to BG 2, as this is a trilogy no-reload.

EDIT: Final Veeton BG 1 stats: STR 19 DEX 19 CON 18 INT 19 WIS 4 CHA 3, 58 HP, 575 kills, 29% of the party's kills (pretty good for a mage in a full party)

Titch started the Stone of Askvaar quest, and whilst in the Blushing Mermaid decided to take on Slythe and Kirstin. Killing them was no problem. The problem was that Alora got confused and started shooting arrows in all directions. This turned everyone hostile and within seconds my reputation was 1!

Once fallen, can a paladin ever become unfallen again?

It's the first time that I've had a fallen paladin!

@wise - if you make it to BG 2, you can rescue Garren Windspear's child - if you do, you regain your paladin abilities then. You're out of luck in BG 1.

Corey, congrats on your success with Veeton! I'd hate to challenge him to a fireball duel. Or a summons duel. If you left any enemies alive, I doubt they could describe what hit them.

Grimwald, it looks like you're going to have to RP a tragic hero with a terrible reputation now ;) That sounds amusing. Good luck!

Thank you for your kind words, Blind_Visionary. Question now is can he keep it up in BG 2? My last character that attempted BG 2 didn't even make it out of Irenicus' Dungeon! Granted, he was solo, and an unkitted Bard at that. Trying to decide who his party members should be. Seeing that Veeton is lawful evil, Viconia, Korgan, and Edwin should be part of the party, not sure about the rest.

Well done Corey - see you in Amn.

Tiamat, elf wild mage (Final Update)

After passing invisibly through the Cloakwood to the Mine Tiamat used her good weapon speed to beat up the guards and Drasus (adding a potion of absorption for the latter).  Went invisibly down to Daveorn and beat up the guard by staff.  After resting triggered the battle horrors and then went invisible to leave them behind.  A potion of speed was then used and a potion of magic blocking allowed him to survive Daveorn's initial spell assault.  I tried a straight up melee battle for a while, but Tiamat looked like losing that, so fell back on running round and using his greater weapon speed to finish off Daveorn.  Used a potion of invisibility to rest before killing the jelly, flooding the mine and running away (invisibly again) past Kysus and Rezdan.

I wanted to learn as many spells as possible in BG1, but finances were still tight, so set about doing a number of quests I don't normally bother with.  Noralee, Ghorak, Varci, Brielbara, Seven Suns, sewer ogre mage and Quinn were all completed.  For some reason Fergus didn't want to accept an angel skin ring, so gave it to Petrine.  Also detoured out of the city to help Charleston Nib, which I hadn't done before.  That lot got Tiamat back to reputation 19 and he went to buy some first and second level spells.  However, prices still looked a bit high so he used a strength scroll to break into Nadine's home and tell her that her son will come home soon.  With 20 reputation he was able to buy scrolls for the rest of the available spells he did not yet know.

Also picked up the tomes; used wand of fire on a number of occasions, such as Jalantha, while Marek was protected against with the final use from the green amulet - got level 9 doing that with another nice 6 HPs.  While thinking about it also retrieved the tome from Durlag's Tower - using a couple of stone form potions to ensure saving throw success.

Investigated the Iron Throne invisibly and duly got sent back to Candlekeep.  Used two knock scrolls there and risked a spell to open the third tomb. Then left invisibly.

Back in the city some gnolls and a scorcher soon accounted for Slythe.  A cloudkill from Krystin then made the Cloak of Balduran available before some hobgoblins helped finish her off.  At the palace some dire wolves provided initial defense for the dukes, while a couple of the dopplegangers were stopped in their tracks by the wand of paralysation.  Liia died, but Belt survived without too much trouble.

Used protection from magic scroll and invisibility to move through the maze.  Then, for the fight with Sarevok, added a potion of speed.  Sarevok was encouraged to leave the protection of the others with a bullet +1 from distance (Tiamat's only use of a magic bullet to add to the 1,000 normal ones I gave him as a quota, which were used during his adventures).  Sarevok was malisoned by scroll early on and Tiamat tried a chaos without success, but did get him stuck in a web a couple of times and used the last 2 charges of the wand of monster summoning to get some damage in - taking Sarevok to badly wounded.  Tiamat used the last 3 charges from wand of paralysation without effect before turning to the wand of magic missiles.  25 of its 31 charges were used (with another potion of speed in the middle) before Sarevok decided he'd had enough.

Tiamat picked up the unused Horn of Kazgoroth and a slightly used pair of pantaloons and reported back to Duke Belt for duty in Athkatla.  Here's his final record:
Image IPB
Note that I only noticed on the screenshot that his intelligence had not been tomed.  I did kill Ramazith (had his ring) and I'm virtually certain I remember going invisible to walk up his tower.  I imagine that my inventory was full so that clicking on the tome did nothing and I didn't notice its lack later.

My fallen paladin will need all the luck he can get. He has been deserted by both Ajantis and Gavin.
Fortunately they gave me enough warning so I was able to retrieve their belongings. Sadly I didn't think to let Yeslick join long enough to send him to the FAI when in the mines.

I will therefore probably need Branwen. Indira has not indicated that she is upset... yet.

Kagain will not be upset by my reputation, and I will be most upset if Alora decides to leave, since it was her actions that caused my problems. I picked up 1 reputation point by donating 100 gp to farmer Brun. Fortunately, I left several unfinsidhed quests dotted around just in case I needed to raise my reputation.

P.S. I think that my reputation will go up to average when I go to Amn, so there is no real necessity to do much about it now. Is that correct? I think that I have heard that a low reputation can cause problems with the Flaming Fist.

P.s. I would still like to know the answers to the above questions even though currently reputation is not a problem.

By helping farmer brun, a woman whose son is trapped by worgs, rescuing Samuel, killing half-ogres, and donating money to temples, Titch is a hero once again. Phew! At least if he does the Windspear quest early on, he should be able to use his paladin abilities in Amn. Saerileth might even turn up!

I"m not 100% on this Wise, but I'm pretty certain your reputation is set by your alignment in BG 2. After all, my character has 15 reputation in BG 1, but that won't be what I get in BG 2.

Tiamat - wild mage v3 (update 1)

After an early demise in BG2 I'm trying again.  As v2's death was a bit unfortunate I've just restarted that one rather than taking the time to re-roll the character.

In v1 Tiamat was totally reckless with spells in BG1 and was very fortunate to make it through.  In v2 by contrast he cast only 3 or 4 spells in the whole run, which was therefore pretty safe, but also rather time-consuming.  The idea this time is to only cast spells when out of sight and not nearby already active enemies - that will greatly reduce the chance of a surge being fatal.

I have seen surges from scrolls in the past, but none in the current runs, so my assumption is that scrolls are safe in this installation.  Special abilities (like Bhaal abilities and sequencers/triggers) can produce surges though, which is a bit of a pain.

So far sleep has been used quite a bit, so progress has been much quicker than last time.  Done Shoal, Beregost and Nashkel and pinched Meilum's bracers.  Currently level 4 and just arrived at the basilisk area so should improve further there.

Well done Corey. Well done, hard luck, good luck Grond0.

Reputation is reset in BG2, should be the same as at start of BG1. BGT reputation remains the same although there is a tweak to reset it. Both the "Start Reputation" and "Reputation Reaction Adjustments are covered here by the look of it.

Tiamat - wild mage v3 (update 3)

I think trying this again might have been a mistake.  Things went very smoothly up to completing the basilisks, but I've got sucked into taking a few more risks since then.

Although he's cast a few spells in potentially dangerous situations the only actual problem that's occurred was against Zal.  He did the old soft-shoe shuffle straight over the top of a skull trap - surprising the quasit - and 3 rapid darts killed it.

[ALAIN AND IMOEN VISIT HIGH HEDGE. PREVIOUS POST HERE.]

Alain emerged from Thalantyr's estate at High Hedge, looking pleased with himself. Imoen lay on the front steps, watching the clouds stream by overhead.

"How'd it go?" Imoen asked.

"As well as could be expected, I guess," Alain replied.

"How much did he give you for that spear?" Imoen asked.

"Well, he drove a hard bargain," Alain said. "He's feeling the effects of the iron crisis even out here. He kept going on and on about how times are hard and how mages have to look out for themselves and how glad he was to have a visitor after who knows how many years spent alone out here with his flesh golems..."

"Flesh golems?" Imoen interrupted. "Yikes! That sounds creepy in so many ways!"

"Well," Alain continued, "The upshot is that he's lonely. He didn't turn me into a toad."

"So are we rich now?" Imoen asked.

"We're better off than we were," Alain replied.

"How much gold did he give you, silly?" Imoen grew exasperated.

"Well, none," Alain said. "I actually bought some things while I was in there."

"What?" Imoen said. "Please tell me we won't have to give up sleeping in beds."

"Sorry, Imoen, but I think we're going to have to stay in the stables tonight," Alain sighed.

"What could be worth that?" Imoen exclaimed.

"Our lives," Alain said somberly. "Remember when we almost got trapped by those gibberlings and ghouls in that canyon? They could smell us when we were invisible, I think. That terrified me. I asked Thalantyr what he would do if he were in that situation. He gave me a couple of vials from his lab."

"Vials?" Imoen said, incredulous. Alain passed her one, tightly corked. It held an unappetizing viscous orange liquid. He gingerly held another, clear potion.

"Yeah, vials," Alain said. "If you drink the one you are holding, and then break this one over the nearest gibberling, your enemies die in a cloud of billowing fire and you just get singed."

"And you believed him?" Imoen exclaimed. "That sounds like a load of hogwater to me."

"He summoned some beasties in there and showed me that it works," Alain said. "The fire was intense, and Thalantyr didn't even look sunburned."

"I dunno, Alain," Imoen said.

"Let's hope we never have to use them," Alain said, putting the vials back in his pouch.  "Come on, let's get back to the Jovial Juggler. I saved enough for a round of ale and a meal or two. And a night in the stables."

"Great, more evidence that I can't trust you with the purse," Imoen said. "Next time, I'm going in there myself to cut the deal, scary mage or not."

Titch went around doing good and giving to temples, which is just as well, for when he went to the Duchal palace Indira summoned monsters.

They should have helped, but didn't. They panicked due to a spell and started killing whoever was nearest, good or bad. This resulted in many good guys becoming hostile.

Nevertheless, they prevailed but ended up with a reputation of five and with dozens of enemies. They therefore made a sharp exit and did a few more reputation boosting jobs such as returning Nester's dagger and giving yet more money to temples.

They were then given a task to retake the Friendly Arms Inn that had been taken over by the grey clan. There Titch received a boost to his intelligence. This time, the undead were not as much of a problem as usual perhaps because the party had a mace of disruption. They got another reputation boost as well upon rescuing some hostages. They still have to get inside the inn however.

PS The Inn proved to be no problem. Neither were the high sorceresses found in Beregost. Some of the gold spent on boosting reputation was found to be wasted as the party was given another reputation point when its reputation was already 20!:(

Still, our fallen paladin should be able to console himself somewhat in having such a high reputation. :)

Tiamat - wild mage v3 (update 4)

This run is hard on the quasit populationImage IPB.  Tiamat's second companion just got killed in a bandit ambush - should not really have been out of the backpack of course!

I'm not sure if I'll continue with him.  I'll perhaps have a break for a day or two and then try again - this time allowing a bag of holding to reduce the inventory hassle.

Titch and party joined up with Drizzt and Wulfgar and entered the nine hells.

They used Wulfgar's rage plus protective armour against fire to take on the Demonknight.

Drizzt then took on a Tanari single handed using stealth and resistance to magic.

Titch was then the tank against Belhifet. He was wearing the talisman fron the stone of askvaar quest that protects against ALL poisons. The problem was that it doesn't! It doesn't protect against the poison on Belhifet's sword, so he had to use two potions of health. :(

Belhifet fell however! :D

The charm didn't work against Merilith's poison either! :(

She also died after injuring Wulfgar seriously, but no shortage of healing potions (80+ in the potion bag).

Tiamat - wild mage v4

No work today so decided to try again after all.  Gave up on Tiamat v3, although he hadn't died, and tried running version 4 through without taking any damage.  That failed at level 6 when the quasit was trying to kill a skeleton to help revive Melicamp and a skeleton from another group sneaked up behind Tiamat and got a couple of HPs of damage in.

Carried on, though being less careful, and got as far as Sarevok.  However, there I was trying to be cute and attack him in melee from behind while he was occupied with some summons in front.  Even my double-tapping the pause button to check if he was starting to turn round didn't prevent the big guy from making an instant attack and one-shotting Tiamat (who had a rather poor 48 HPs).
