It's been a long while since my last proper attempt so here it goes! :)

BG:EE
Phaeton
Race: Elf
Alignment: NE
class: Fighter/Mage (my first time with this combo!)
Str: 18/95
Dex: 19
Con: 17
Int: 18
Wis: 10
Cha: 8

Not a bad roll to start with (although I did accidently click through a few better ones - doh!)

Decided on two weapon fighting so split my points evenly in that fighting style plus Scimitar/Wakizashi/Ninjato. Even if it takes me a while to get two magical weapons at least the non-magical one won't break!

After stuffing my newly acquired familiar in my pack (those extra HP's will come in handy in the long road to level 2) it was pretty routine clearing the quests in Candlekeep and watching Gorion get a beating. After joining forces with my old friends Montaron and Xzar we headed East on our way to The Friendly Arm Inn. Clearing this area wasn't much of a problem (I'd brought along a sling and ammo for my companions) and we travelled north...... and nearly finished the run there and then!! Literally was ambushed by about 15 bandit archers encircling the party so could do nothing except run NE and hope for the best. Xzar had to take one for the team and we left him where he fell.. possibly a mistake on my part as he had Gorions magic belt plus the diamond and the wand of magic missiles so an expensive loss. I could have transferred the equipment over before making my sprint for freedom :)

Arriving at the Friendly Arm Inn we didn't have enough cash to resurrect Xzar immediately so had to face the first assassin without his support. While keeping the guards in sight we engaged - but the foul mage fell to Phaeton's first blow. Gorions friends didn't look like the sort that would gell with my growing band of minions so we accepted their well wishes and equipment and let them live.

While dispatching some foolish Hobgoblins who'd ventured too close to the Inn we detoured East and stumbled across a drow being persecuted by a Flaming Fist mercenary determined to meet his maker. After helping him on his way the grateful maiden joined our merry band and we returned to the Inn.

Good luck with Phaeton, Melchom! I did a fighter/mage solo recently but he didn't quite make it (he got killed by a 2 Wyvern ambush), so here's hoping you succeed where Yarlat failed.

[ALAIN'S NEWFOUND WEALTH. PREVIOUS POST HERE.]

Alain stepped out of the massive gates of High Hedge and joined Imoen, who was sitting on the steps, adjusting the fletchings on one of her arrows.

“So, is Thalantyr ready to take you on as an apprentice yet?” Imoen asked.

“Not yet,” Alain replied, sitting down. “I think he would have preferred if we had joined the statues in Mutamin’s garden.”

“That creep,” Imoen said. “Did he buy our loot?”

“Yeah, he paid quite a bit of gold for one of the magical robes we looted off of Mutamin’s corpse,” Alain said, jingling the coin purse.

“OK, fess up,” Imoen said, scowling. “How much of it did you spend on more stupid potions this time?”

“Only about half,” Alain said. “And only really useful ones. You’ll thank me for this antidote next time you catch a poison arrow.”

“You’re the poison arrow magnet, not me,” Imoen said. “Most hobgoblins know better than to shoot at me.”

“Right,” Alain said. “I make such a tempting target. It’s like there’s a bullseye painted on my robes.”

“Well, I suppose we can’t have you poisoned all the time,” Imoen said as she took a peek into Alain’s pack. “I’ll concede that you spent the money more wisely than usual this time. I don’t see any smelly oils of we-probably-won’t-ever-need-this.”

“And we really do have a lot of gold left over,” Alain said. “Maybe we can even buy a roast hen and some of Feldepost’s best ale tonight. Things are looking up.”

“Good,” Imoen said. “It’s about time. You owe me for all those nights spent in the hedges.”

“Aww, come on,” Alain said, “that was fun. Besides, we learned some self-preservation instincts that we’ll probably need for our next mission. Thalantyr’s not done with us yet.”

“Uh oh,” Imoen said, sliding her arrows back into the quiver and standing up. “What now?”

“He wants us to go check on a party of adventurers he hired to go to the Firewine Ruins,” Alain said. “Apparently he sent them to fetch a mage named Kahrk who had been imprisoned in a jar, but they haven’t come back.”

“That sounds creepy,” Imoen said. “I don’t like it.”

“Yeah,” Alain said. “Thalantyr kept grumbling under his breath about his last apprentice, who apparently turned out to be a no-good thief. I think we have a ways to go before we earn his trust.”

“Alright,” Imoen said. “I guess we’d better get on with it.”

Welcome to the party, Melchom! Looks like you're off to a lucky start. I can't count the number of times my runs have ended in a 15 bandit ambush...

Grond - kensai (update 2)

Grond has completed his BG1 training and is now ready to embark on the main quest.

At the start of his journey he had been trying to avoid taking any damage.  He was successful in that through most of the remainder of the Cloud Peaks.  H found and returned Rufie (taking a long route round to avoid any potential enemies spawning).  Then, in the next area, he axed Caldo & Krumm (despite the attempted interference of various wolves and gnolls) and got the last of Drienne's allowance for returning some soggy fur.

At the Gnoll Stronghold he acquired a tome of charisma, but took his first 1 HP of damage when a pathfinding error put him in range of a xvart shortsword - that was the signal to switch to dual wielding except against potentially dangerous enemies.  On the way back to Nashkel a slightly grateful merchant gave him 50 gold for eliminating a marauding bear.

On to the basilisk area, where his axe +1 and Greywolf's sword made short work of the monstrosities while protected by green scroll (level 6 - 10 HPs).  Korax helped with Mutamin, but got killed by the party while Grond ran away.

In a sleepy moment I clicked on the wrong conversation with Lena and missed the chance to help Samuel.  However, Grond pressed on to the Friendly Arm anyway.  He picked up a couple of rings, returning one to Joia and also demonstrated to Tarnesh that mirror images are not enough protection before returning Landrin's goods.

Restoring Melicamp and killing a band of half-ogres got Grond to reputation 20 and he celebrated by buying an amulet of shielding and a couple of protection from acid scrolls.  They came in immediate handy while cleaning out an ankheg nest, where he also got an extremely welcome additional 15 HPs for reaching level 7.  His shield had expired by this time, but he relied on the acid protection to chunk a few more ankhegs in order to collect the fabulous wealth promised by Gerde.  With the 75 gold already burning a hole in his pocket he hurried on towards Ulgoth's Beard, just stopping briefly to return a bowl to Tenya and chunk one more ankheg - still under acid protection.  The ring of invisibility was outside his price bracket at the moment, but the greenstone amulet and cloak of displacement were acquired.

The shield and greenstone amulets proved far too much for some sirenes, though the help of 9 or 10 healing potions was also needed against 3 flesh golems.  The shield amulet was joined by hill giant strength at Durlag's Tower.  The first battle horror made Grond use several healing potions, but he was very lucky with the second - a single kai seeing him off.  A greater doppleganger though was rather more fortunate - two criticals from it required the use of Grond's potion of speed to keep his distance until haste ran out and he could finish it off easily with throwing axes.  After collecting the tome Grond had a chance to practice his technique as another greater doppleganger was waiting.  No potion support (other than healing) this time, but he prevailed with fewer problems.  Noticing that he was now in reach of level 8 I deliberately rested to allow another greater doppleganger to spawn.  Healing potions were nearly exhausted, so a cloud giant potion was used to help dispatch this one - again a very nice 14 HPs to finish off his BG1 advancement.

 Multi-player No Reload
Coretrue - level 7 Paladin, 81 HP, controlled by Corey_Russell (protagonist)
Wewa - level 8 thief, 52 HP, controlled by Dogdancing
Areas battled: Pirate Cave area, Ulcaster School, Bassilus area, Basilisks area, Ankheg Farm area

The duo continued to make some good progress. They ended the threat from the mad cleric Bassilus, primarily with the help of the greenstone amulet. Despite doing the correct dialog choices, the undead did not disappear when Wewa talked to the mad cleric (her stealth dropped), so she ran for her life and Coretrue did his amulet and charged the mad cleric. Only one spell hit Wewa but she saved. Wewa thought the undead were doing nothing, but actually they were firing bolt after bolt into Coretrue, it's they had a tough time connecting to him with his -10 missile adjustment - Wewa's pretty good too for a theif, at -7.

After selling, they returned to the Bassilus area to deal with the hoggoblin bandits in the center, with an upgraded sword for Wewa. The short sword is bad for jellies, so we may switch it out later but using it for now. Then we unlocked the Pirate Cave area and dealt with the Sirines there. Greenstone amulet/protection from evil protected Coretrue well, and Wewa played it safe and assisted her bow. The same was done for the flesh golems.

After selling, we got what we needed for the Basilisks area and headed their next. Dogdancing was busy with real life (kids), so Coretrue took control of her character and did a precision battle vs. Kirian's band of adventurers. Coretrue used potion of magic blocking on himself, and Wewa did huge help here by using necklace of missiles a few times, then concentrating arrows of biting on Kirian - success! We were pretty full, so left the area, sold, returned, and THEN activated our protection from petrification scroll. Mutamutin was defeated primarily with arrows of biting, then the rest of map Coretrue tanked with Wewa carefully assisting. The only hairy part was the map was almost cleared when Wewa ran into 3 flinds with Coretrue quite a ways away. Wewa did her fireball on them, but Corey_Russell unpaused right about then and Wewa's character walked right into her own fireball and went to 1/3 life! She then ran around, trying to potion. Coretrue did two heals on her, then beat up the flinds - success, and no one is worse for wear.

We next did Ulcaster School - no problems with any enemies, other than Icharyd was hitting Coretrue extremely hard, Coretrue worked hard to heal himself, however, Wewa's acid arrows came through for the duo and slew the undead warrior before he could take out Coretrue. In addtion, vs. the two jellies here, Wewa had to use her acid arrows since her short sword isn't much help against them.

Both party members were VERY close to leveling, so they went to the Ankheg map, as there were some Ankhegs still not dealt with yet - we hadn't even done the nest yet. Obtaing Farmer Brun's son and his loot was enough to level both party members. The HP "gods" were fairly generous this go around, Coretrue might finish BG 1 with 90 HP and that's great for a Human. After selling everything, the duo stood at about 30,000 gold. Wewa doesn't want to switch weapons, so Coretrue suggested the duo get her the +3 martial staff, which works against everything. This sounds good to her, only problem is we have a few hostile civilians in Ulgoth's Beard due to a failed pick-pocket. Nevertheless, the duo goes to Ulgoth's Beard and Coretrue waits at the entrance to the village while Wewa gets her upgraded weapon. Good deal.

The duo returns to Beregost to put some things in the Bank, and wipe out Silke for her dastardly deed she attempted to make us do. Wewa tried to sell her Ankheg, but Thunderhammer Smithy said he was no longer interested. This seemed like a good place to stop, it was getting late.

My multi-character game was rudely interrupted by Droth who cast sleep, putting Dragonslayer and Picky to sleep. :(

He saved against command. :(:(

He then charmed Carsomyr. He then cast lightning bolt on Picky almost killing him. :pinched::pinched:

This was followed by an attack on Dragonslayer who was chunked. :pinched::(

Picky was then killed but not chunked.:(

Dragonslayer then killed Droth. :):)

When one of the initial characters gets chunked. That is the end of the run. Right?

No. Only when the protagonist dies. When characters controlled by different humans get chunked, they will often end the run. But if you are controlling all the MP characters, Wise, you can just continue (without reloading though of course).

Grond - kensai (update 3)

Grond is back in the city from his trip to Candlekeep and preparing for the final few battles.

Before going to the Nashkel mine Grond looked to raise a bit more money.  The first target was Zargal, who handed over his sword in exchange for a few throwing axes.  That encounter was an appetiser for Bassilus - his undead didn't want to die, but Grond insisted on it.  With the reward money and proceeds from magical weapons Grond was able to buy the ring of invisibility.  That was used to go down to Mulahey, where a fireball disposed of his support troops before the green amulet protected a final assault.  Mulahey ran outside looking for help, but to no avail.

A couple of throwing axes meant no need for any protection against Nimbul.  None needed either for Tranzig - a kai assault finishing him off before he could cast.  Before going to the bandit camp Grond found he had just enough money to acquire the Claw of Kazgoroth.  That helped ensure the bandits only got the odd critical on him, while a potion of absorption settled Taugosz and potions of firebreath and clarity the main tent.

The loot from the bandit camp allowed the purchase of the Horn of Kazgoroth, though that won't be used in BG1.  Then Grond strolled through the Cloakwood to the mine.  He tried to pull Drasus back alone, but the others all followed, so Grond ran away.  Returning he managed to get Drasus alone and a charge from the amulet of shielding was sufficient to deal with him.  The rest of the party were left alone as Grond went invisibly down to Daveorn.  The battle horrors were ignored as Grond went past Daveorn and threw an axe at him from behind.  A green amulet charge and potion of magic blocking then provided protection, while he meleed him into submission.

A mustard jelly gave Grond a scare - its first two attacks were both criticals, but (despite being slowed) Grond returned the favour to finish it off before it got another attack.

In the city the tomes and Ramazith's ring were the first things needed.  Grond got a critical miss on Ramazith with his right hand, but quickly remedied the mistake before the mage could respond.  Also triggered the mountain mauler conflict in order to get the axe +2 - stayed back during that just sniping occasionally with his throwing axes.

Prat's party were lucky to see off Okami the kensai, but there was no escape from Grond.  He used a potion of invulnerability just in case Bor managed to critical him with a stunning dart, along with heroism and a first use of DUHM.  All the opponents were dead within 3 rounds.  After looting a magic throwing axe, a potion of invisibility allowed him to make his escape.

Grond - kensai (final update)

Grond duly finished off Sarevok and has journeyed to Amn.

Slythe failed to land a blow on the potioned-up Grond (AC -11 with -3 to piercing weapons).  Krystin dispelled his buffs, but also gave him access to Balduran's Cloak before Grond ran away.

For the palace potion buffs were replaced (and heroism replaced by potion of power).  I forgot to add DUHM and kai, but even so Grond made pretty short work of the dopplegangers and both dukes survived.

Moving rapidly on Grond used a potion of invisibility to go through the maze and down to confront Sarevok, where a long-distance axe brought him out alone.  A couple of fireballs did minimal damage to Sarevok, but cleared out a few bats that might have obstructed movement.  A few throwing axes were used as an introduction, before Grond closed into melee.  He got Sarevok to badly wounded before being knocked down to 48 HPs and running from a possible nasty critical.  A regeneration potion soon allowed him to close again, but once more he retreated when HPs dipped to about 50.  The third attack I thought would be sufficient, but a critical drove him off again.  However, that was only postponing the inevitable as Sarevok finally ran out of HPs.

Grond reported back to Duke Belt.  He had obviously not heard the stories of previous travellers because he allowed himself to be ambushed by Mae'Var and woke up in a dungeon.  Here's his current character record.

Sorry to hear that. Arrows of biting (you can purchase at Thunderhammer Smithy) work well against casters. Mulahey doesn't have Mirror Images so it has a decent chance of connecting on him, if it does connect, he usually can't cast anything.

Defensive options could be potion of magic blocking (from Thalantyr) or invisibility potion. Regardless, good luck in your next run Melchom! Some people like freedom potion here in this fight, but that's not a defense to rigid thinking (cleric confusion basically).

Finally, in a party, another option is to keep your mage close to you, as if you get held the mage could cast invisibility on you so Mulahey can't hit you if he can't see you.

Sorry if you didn't want any advice, but the more runs going the more we can learn, so just trying to encourage ya to pick yourself up and try again, heeding what happened in your last attempt.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into with Kahrk. He was much more powerful than I was expecting, especially with the SCS prebuffs. I did win, though.

I had enough invisibilty spells that I could hide from him while he was casting something nasty, then wait until his MGoI went down. He dispelled invis a few times, but eventually, I had Imoen sneak up on him, get his attention, and then Alain blinded him. After that, he made a lot of noise but didn't pose that much of a threat. (Except for when Imoen walked into his little field of vision for a second and got blasted with lots and lots of magic missles. Or when he made us walk into an unpleasant kobold spawn point a few too many times.) Unfortunately, no meaningful loot. (Edit: that idiot Melium was carrying a shield amulet, which is nice.)

And now for the next chapter in Alain's tale:

[THALANTYR'S WOULD-BE APPRENTICE RETURNS. PREVIOUS POST HERE.]

Imoen tapped her foot impatiently on the hard granite steps of Thalantyr’s High Hedge estate. She picked at the burns and scars in her pockmarked leather armor, fingering tears and popping off loose studs. She stared at the gate and waited. And waited some more.

Eventually, Alain re-emerged from the building. He sat down on the steps, looking deep in thought.

“Well?” Imoen asked. “What did he say? Did he apologise for sending us on that insane errand?”

“He didn’t say much,” Alain said. “He took the empty jar and seemed to accept my story about what happened as truth. Although he seemed much more disappointed that Kahrk was dead than in the loss of his hired adventurers. Apparently the mage knew a lot of interesting spells.”

“No kidding,” Imoen said, picking at the blisters and holes in her leather jerkin. “I’m going to need a new suit of armor. Did he apologize for failing to tell us that Kahrk was a homicidal ogre sociopath, who was imprisoned in that jar for a very good reason?"

"No," Alain said, “the man is stone cold. Anyway, the upshot of all this is, he's still not ready to apprentice me.”

“I’m increasingly of the mind that you should give up on this apprentice nonsense,” Imoen said. “Especially if he keeps sending us to confront angry ogre magi or rampaging basilisks.”

“Maybe you have a point,” Alain said. “But I think we’re actually starting to impress him. His next task sounds relatively easy.”

“I like the sound of easy,” Imoen said. “What’s the deal?”

“Shopping,” Alain said.

“Ok, maybe I was being too hasty,” Imoen said, bright with anticipation. “I love shopping!”

“We’re going to look for some kind of potion reagents in Ulgoth’s Beard,” Alain said.

“Where's that?” Imoen looked uncertain.

“I don’t really know,” Alain said. “North. We’ll have to ask for directions on the way.”

Well done.  He has a spell save of 2 so you only have a 5% chance of getting blind to work (unless you use doom or malison).

Best of luck for Alain in his journeys - watch out for ankhegs on the way to Ulgoth's Beard!

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 18 - (final update)
Quash, dwarf barbarian (Grond0) & Berud, dwarf barbarian (Gate70)

Athkatla has become even more crowded as another pair of barbarians join the throng.

In the city the duo quickly acquired the tomes (including a quick trip to Durlag's Tower to get the one there).  They added to those the ogre gauntlets, the Helm of Glory and Ramazith's ring.  No particular problems with those fights.  In general rage was used against spell casters, while one character stayed unraged to tank fighters (barbarian rage penalises AC).  Larze did plenty of damage and made Berud retreat, but didn't survive long enough to do the same to Quash.

With no particular need for XP the Iron Throne was just investigated invisibly.  In Candlekeep Berud looted the tombs before the duo again exited invisibly.  Back in the city there was a bit of final shopping before commencing the end game.  No potions were used against Slythe, which allowed him the chance to hit Berud several times before exploding into chunks.  After resting, a full potion quota was put to use at the palace.  As expected this caused havoc among the dopplegangers, but my impression was that they were being pretty lucky with their attacks as well.  Belt was hit a number of times, while Liia expired just moments before the last doppleganger.  That gave both barbarians their final BG1 level.

After fighting through the maze they dodged round the Undercity party to get to the temple.  Just in case of an unexpected incident Quash used a scroll of magic protection while taking a shot at Sarevok with a dispelling arrow.  He missed, but succeeded in drawing Sarevok out.  He shot again ... and missed again.  At this point Berud unlimbered his unenchanted bow and showed Quash how it should be used.

For a while Berud led Sarevok round the end of the temple while the barbarians quaffed potions.  Once ready they raged and engaged.  Being both vicious in attack and vulnerable in defense, this was never likely to be an extended battle and so it proved.  Sarevok's first 4 attacks all hit Quash, bringing him down to 34 HPs.  He responded by breaking off and circling round to attack Sarevok from the rear.  However, in the short time that took Berud had hit twice more and convinced Sarevok his cause was hopeless.

Stats (including BG2 dungeon)
Quash, barbarian L8, 93 HPs (including 5 from Helm), 293 kills

Rage and engage! I love it. Well done, barbarian duo.
