Coral, LG female elf stalker
(Episode 12; Coral goes to Cloakwood - some singles and a couple of more obscure album fillers)

After "Watching the Wildlife" Coral observes a tasloi with a cloak until the inevitable backstab “Bang”. Not far away Aldeth Sashenstar can "Relax" after Coral deals with Seniyad (+12hp)  while Coral sneaks past "The Power of Love" previously known as Coran.

A potion of invisibility is used to sneak through four traps and a few spiders are culled before Coral arrives at a huge structure. There is a sign hanging over the entrance "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" which is about as disturbing as it gets. Coral sneaks inside and gets a glimpse of what could have been her fate if she’d chosen to read more of the Bills & Moon romance novels.

She moves out of sight of an angry spider to re-stealth then slips past the grotesque Centeol. A stealthy pick-up (right-click) sees her heft the body of a young man and his free-action two handed sword (ahem) before sneaking out again. After dumping the body with another young man Coral taps a pair of huge spiders and one ettercap which requires two arrows on the move.

Some time is spent in the shadows observing Eldoth Kron, marvelling at his ability to produce and drink wine seemingly at will. After an hour or so Eldoth breaks into song, a rousing ballad "Warriors of the Wasteland" followed by another rousing "Rage Hard". A distant voice piques her interest so Coral investigates that too, finding Laskal. He seems friendly enough once he has established that Coral isn’t working for the Iron Throne. Coral asks why and he tells her about the "Two Tribes" each with conflicting plans for Cloakwood.

Coral realises she shouldn’t have tried to “Kiss” the hamadryad with her quarterstaff and runs, only to see a dire charm cast. She is scared of being “Delirious” and although she is “Born to Run” doesn’t think she will make the edge of the map (uh-oh). After discounting the greenstone amulet (too slow) she glugs a potion of invulnerability (what a waste) only to find she arrives at the map edge in time. With the potion active she turns back and hides for a second attack so the hamadryad can experience some “Black night white light”.

Hours later Coral arrives at a secret mine where Drasus declares “War”. What is it good for - absolutely nothing. four arrows of biting have convinced him of that.
Posted Image

Arrow 5 misses Rezdan; he mirrors as Kysus dimension doors. Coral knows the routine - stealth outlasts magic. Arrow 6 hits Kysus but he survives the poison to take arrow 7. Arrow 8 starts to poison Rezdan but Coral nips in to tap him to the ground and hides before supplying Genthore with 3 taps.

Two wyverns try an ambush on the way to the shops, but Coral has the boots of speed equipped and collects their skulls after six backstabs.

(Looking back, the potion took save vs spell to 7 but reaching the transition and pressing Esc to return seems to have cancelled the spell. I find potions aren't as essential for stalkers as other classes which means “The world is my oyster”)

Coral, LG female elf stalker
(Episode 13; Unlucky for some, primarily those wearing robes)

Cloakwood mine is dark and forboding, perfect for stalking. Coral has soon worked her way to Hareishan and opened some nearby doors to dispose of two ghasts. She switches to the boots of grounding, clears a magic missile trap the painful way and stealthily moves into the remaining room only to see the lightning bolt remain in the corridor. Coral retreats to heal and rest, then Hareishan manfully soaks up a backstab of 28.

Coral has retreated without injury and starts to search for stray guards while waiting for improved invisibility to wear off. She is the third victim, exploding into chunks. The entire party is killed without any buffs or non-trap damage, then Coral heads downstairs and past another group of guards to grab some potions from their chapel area. After returning to kill them she gives Natasha a tap followed by a post-mirror tap. Another half dozen or so guards are cleared before the final guard takes two backstabs.

The first battle horror gets a backstab and a poorly aimed hit (just off backstab range as obscured by a chest) but a second backstab does the job. The remaining horror is lured back as Coral out-runs a skulltrap trap; one miss (rolled 3+10) and three backstabs are required to kill it. A lightning trap stings so Coral heals and rests before dealing with Davaeorn.

Two sets of mirror images fail to save him from hit run hide attacks and after ten or so he takes a solid hit. The next attack bounces off a mirror but the one after that also finds the right target.Posted Image

Nice work so far, Gate70. Seems like Stalker is a solid class, may have to try it sometime.

Decent but not devastating backstabs. Solid melee 2 handed weapon style or even better dual wielding. Easily good enough with a bow. The issues I try and avoid are switching from dual to bow and fronting a party which usually means losing stealth/backstab so a paladin or fighter may as well be used.

Coral, LG female elf stalker
(Episode 14; The streets are paved with gold)

Life in the city of Baldur’s Gate is lived at a hectic place. Coral has only been there 5 minutes but already has a ring of protection +2, the helm of Balduran and tomes of dexterity plus intelligence.

Zhalimar Cloudewulfe is proud of his patience; he will need to be as Coral has been in and out without him noticing and returned to Candlekeep. Koveras introduces himself and Coral asks if he has seen her twin sister Laroc?

Trumped up murder charges see Coral jailed, giving her chance to examine the metal bars which look susceptible to her staff +3, or she could simply climb the bars and over the top of the cell. As she weighs up the two options Tethtoril arrives to demonstrate that an over-abundance of grey-matter often delivers a needlessly complicated teleport solution for the simplest of problems. Regardless, Coral is free and wastes no time using a protection from magic scroll and glugging a storm giant strength potion.

After looting three tombs Coral kills a few doppelgangers, discovering the hard way that killing “Winthrop” merely allows his doppelganger to re-appear and have to be killed again (2x420xp). The Elminster doppelganger takes a critical in the face for 50 and panics while still managing to mirror. The images vanish before the panic wears off and the long quarterstaff reach allows a decent chunk to be delivered.

Bor takes two backstabs (carefully managed in case Coral needed to equip Spiders Bane), while Sakul is killed in one go. Tam takes a backstab then Coral runs around to lure Prat out - he fires a lightning bolt that finishes Tam and a second that antagonises some spiders. Coral adds a few backstabs to clear the area then sneaks past two greater basilisks (+10hp, bless memorised, final level for BG1).

(Episode 15; Assassinate the assassins)

Slythe takes a backstab but prods Coral before she can run. Her next backstab misses, a third connects and after a failed hide sees a chase-me game end in a successful hide Slythe runs out of energy. Krystin is hidden so Coral decides to leave her stranded by taking the invitations to the coronation.

(Episode 16; The one that matters)

Coral is worrled about the dukes. Really worried. A quick look around confirms her fears, with Sarevok shouting about our father. Hey, I’m hidden thinks Coral. Those glow-in-the-dark eyes must be exceptionally keen.

2 Mind Focusing > Storm Giant > Heroism > Defence > Speed > Power. Three greater doppelgangers attack the dukes so Coral ignores the others to shoot them with arrows of dispelling. Once done she switches to her staff and sets to work.

AC -9, 102hp, THACO -2, 3 APR and +12 to damage sees the job done but Liia has perished. As Belt examines the evidence Sarevok turns hostile and Coral attacks. Her hit and run turns out to be miss and run 3 times before Sarevok teleports away.

(Episode 17; The Thieves Maze)

The fun starts while backstabbing various jellies and doom guards. Two skeleton warriors donate a few arrows and the potion of power wears off as Coral reaches Winski. She sneaks past Rahvin to enter the temple of Bhaal.

(Episode 18; It’s a Boy Bhaal or It’s a Girl Bhaal)

Sarevok catches the arrow of dispelling with incredible speed, but it has grazed his fingers and his charge towards Coral drops into slow motion. He stops as she vanishes and looks around, realising his three cohorts have deserted him. His grasp tightens on the Sword of Chaos, so tight that Coral can feel the pressure as she positions behind him. She can also feel his eyes searching the room so is careful to stay behind him.

The switch from bow to staff is seamless (done in the inventory to remain stealthed) as is the glugging of an absorbtion potion by moving away again. Once the various webs and poisons dissipate she moves closer to her prey. Another oil of speed precedes her first double damage backstab inside the temple. Count the numbers: 36, 32, 34, 36, 32, 38, 36, 36. No misses today.

It’s a Girl! (Stalker 8, 210 kills and greater basilisk).
No doubt Belt will want her to run an errand or two to distant lands.

Leery - human wizard slayer (update 3 - first half)

Leery toured the map doing encounters with enemies (at least they were normally enemies after the encounters).  He left almost all those with ranged spell abilities alone and also avoided most reputation quests (saving those for later).

Some equipment that would have been turned in by more charismatic characters (such as Zhurlong's boots and Unshey's girdle) was sold instead.  That helped to build up enough gold to buy full plate, large shield +1, axe +1 (used with shield against middling enemies) and staff +3 (used against weaker enemies).  He also regularly shopped to top up his stock of throwing axes (used against stronger enemies).

Another purchase was a couple of scrolls of acid protection, which were used in the ankheg area.  Despite those scrolls Leery used his first healing potions in clearing the nest before helping Gerde with a few more to pick up level 7 (+9 HPs).

He was keen to obtain Bentan's protection from magic scroll, but suspected that the cleric would not conform to his own dictates about giving away worldly possessions - so used force.  Attacking from the map edge meant Leery could run if it proved necessary - a critical made sure that it didn't

Mulahey and Nimbul were both potentially dangerous, but were never given the chance to get close enough to talk and died without ever going hostile (the same was done to Tarnesh earlier).  Tranzig does go hostile when attacked, so Leery was ready to run him up and down the stairs.  However, 2 criticals in 3 shots meant he had no need to move.

Multi-Player No-Reload - a quick note
Coretrue, level 8 paladin, controlled by Corey_Russell (protagonist)
Wewa, level 10 thief, controlled by Dogdancing

The players have obtained their last upgrades from the Gate, and were ready to deal with the Iron Throne 5th floor. Coretrue thought it was safest for him to solo them, using a pro magic scroll and arrows of detonation and spider's bane - this was successful.

We did however, a huge gaffe! Apparently, after the duo looted everything and went to our bank in Beregost and back neither one of us found the free action ring loot and it rotted! Doh! We don't have ToB TAB functionality since we are vanilla BG 1 we miss it here...

This means Coretrue will need to use his spider's bane in the Candlekeep Crypts. The duo made it to Candlekeep, but Dogdancing was exhausted, she only slept one hour last night, she got home late from her work. So duo will deal with Candlekeep when Dogdancing is more awake.

Leery - human wizard slayer (update 4 - second half)

At the bandit camp the archers would have been no real threat against full plate even without Nimbul's boots.  However, full plate is not particularly good armour against blunt weapons and Leery needed to run Taugosz round the camp a couple of times to finish him off with throwing axes.  Leery briefly showed himself in the main tent; Britik and Raemon followed him back outside, only to discover that curiosity killed the catbandits.  After waiting for mirrors to die down Leery went back in and used his newly acquired LMD Bhaal power to interrupt Venkt's horror.  A dart of wounding from the ankheg nest poisoned him and Leery used the gap immediately after a failed spell to leave the safety of the door and come to finish the job.  Hakt died moments later leaving Leery to change his boots and review the contents of a chest.

He rested to get a horrifying Bhaal power before returning to Nashkel to report in to the mayor (didn't do that before to avoid getting reputation up to 10). While selling loot at High Hedge he also bought the Claw and Horn of Kazgoroth, though he's not equipped the Claw at the moment.

Before attempting the Cloakwood I wanted Leery to maximise his level, so made use of Bentan's scroll against a couple of groups of sirenes.  The final survivor of the first group confused him, but died immediately before she could think of using any poisoned arrows.  With nothing likely to harm him much around there I was quite happy to risk confusion there, but that wasn't the case with the second group.  When only 1 of that group managed to use improved invisibility I hoped that Leery would finish them all off in melee before they switched to touch attacks (thus gaining all their poison arrows), but that was an error of judgement - I should have changed to missile fire as the final one again managed to confuse him with its first touch.  This was potentially a lethal situation and the first time in the run he has been exposed to danger.  Fortunately Leery ran away in the right direction and didn't come to the notice of any carrion crawlers that might have been nearby and he was free to kill the sirene when she followed.

The first 2 flesh golems were shot down with +1 arrows before Leery managed a few extra sytle points by getting a quick moving staff through the defenses of the final one before it could respond.

In search of more XP Leery killed the 2 battle horrors on the way to Durlag's Tower at the cost of a couple more healing potions.  I didn't want to sacrifice another scroll of protection from magic at the moment, so the tome was left undisturbed while Leery returned to the coast.  He made a first use of his Bhaal horror to split up an ogre tribe and finishing them off got him his last BG1 level (+7 HPs).  Despite the poor finish his total of 90 HPs is still fractionally above average.

In the Cloakwood he used a protection from poison scroll as insurance, although he was successful in pulling spiders and ettercaps around to kill individually without getting stuck in a web anyway, so didn't actually need it. Centeol and her support crew didn't do too much damage before Leery dropped most of his equipment and ran past a regenerated spider to take a body back to Tiber.  After recovering his equipment he pressed on through the Cloakwood.

At the mine he allowed Drasus to chase him to the edge of the map so that he could run away and heal if necessary.  I think that fight was a pretty even contest so was quite prepared to run, but Leery got the better rolls and won handily.  After resting he moved forward again to see what had happened to the others.  Using his Bhaal horror from out of sight made Rezdan panic and he got killed by a mixture of darts of wounding and axes.  After resting Leery tried again.  This time Genthore panicked and was eventually held for the kill by a dart of stunning.  More resting and 3 more horror attempts saw Kysus running - straight onto the end of 3 throwing axes.

In the mine Leery was soon out of throwing axes and switched to bow and arrows to clear a couple of ghasts out of the way.  He didn't really want to face Hareishan so was trying to run away as soon as he opened the door near Rill.  However, one guard still spotted him and followed with a friend.  After shooting them Leery cautiously moved back towards the door.  He had to kill several more guards, but there was no sign of Hareishan as he made a rush for the stairs, so she had probably gone in the other direction to investigate the noise.

Down on Daveorn's level Leery tried to rest on the stairs (where only 1 guard at a time could attack him).  It took quite a while, but eventually he was fully rested up and ready for the battle horrors.  He used his staff there, trying to get an attack in and then run before the horrors responded.  Leery again had good rolls there, killing the first without damage and taking only a single blow from the second.

Daveorn saved 3 times against horror, while the pile of guards by the exit pushed further and further up the stairs behind Leery.  I was considering having him make use of a scroll of magic protection after all when Daveorn was kind enough to start running on the 4th attempt.  I was confident that Leery would have enough time to shoot him down with his bow, but a pretty horrendous series of attack rolls meant Daveorn actually survived to make his speech, but he was near death and a LMD finished him off before he could take any actions.  That was another mistake that could have been costly (I should have switched to arrows of biting rather than continuing to use +1 arrows on him after the early misses).

After leaving the mine Leery rested, picking up slow poison as his Bhaal power, before travelling to the City.

Update 2: Still Alive and Kicking :)

With the party fully assembled I decided to take a detour and clear the area surrounding the Nashkal mines. Crossing Greywolf and living provided Shar-Teel with a magic weapon and travelling north to Beregost I also purchased a +1 Dagger for her to avoid any breakage risk (in BG:EE she starts with ** in two weapon fighting, * in Longsword and * in Dagger).

However protecting the lovelorn sculptor had brought my reputation too high to be able to sleep so Algernon had his cloak taken from his cold, dead body after a failed pickpocket attempt. Zhurlong's reunion with his boots was also short lived.

Heading west to High Hedge the tome of constitution was identified and the area cleared of beasties.

Needing to keep Edwin happy the party moved south and gatecrashed the Xvart village to their cost and that of a travelling salesman. Bear River didn't prove too much of an issue .. however the ingratitute of Jared did cause me some problems. When he tried to fob off his saviours with 50gp he was slain out of hand.. Couple this with Laurel deciding to commit suicide by throwing herself on Rancor and my reputation was down to 3.. Not helpful given I needed to return to Nashkal. Neville even humoured me when I threatened him .. not sure if that was good or bad :D

Thinking of where I could get some cheap reputation without spending coin the merry band headed to the Dryad Falls. Perhaps foreshadowing his future dual class Lupercus leapt at the chance to help the Dryad save the sacred oak.. and gain a needed point of reputation! And given the party was now on the move I also headed east to Fire Leaf Forest. The encounter with Sendai provided Safana with some magic armour and a morale boost for the party as it had been a cake walk. Edwin cast horror to open which caused Alexander to flee. Meanwhile Viconia's Hold Person froze Sendai and left her to be sliced into pieces by an angry Dorn and ferocious berserker with her archers both following shortly after. I love it when a plan comes together ;)

I did notice that having slain ruffie Albert shifts into a more appropriate form in BG:EE before gating out (possibly a pit fiend? Anyway something devilish and powerful looking :) ). The rest of the map was uneventful and it was soon onto the Gnoll Stronghold itself..

Geoff - Sorceror. Update 3.

Firebead has proven to be more kind and helpful than Imoen or I could have hoped. With his help, I have perfected the art of magical disappearance. And I have taken on odd jobs. Mostly ferrying letters to and from Nashkel. With the ability to hide in the magic of the aura, the roving packs of bandits are manageable -- albeit terrifying when they catch you unaware.

Posted Image

Imoen and I are learning a great deal. Even the greatest beasts can be de-fanged with a little well-placed spellcraft. Gorion would have been proud at how Imoen and I navigated through a field of deadly basilisks using only a few scrolls.

Posted Image

Firebead has advised us of some of the dangers he has experienced in his travels. Most worrisome, he has described the ability of some wizards to dominate the mind. Imoen and I talked it over, and we have decided that our best chance is to seek out allies. We are going to look for Gorion's friends, Jaheira and Khalid. I am hoping that they can help me solve the puzzle of my identity. Perhaps they knew Gorion when he studied in Berdusk. Dare I hope that they knew my parents?

Leery - human wizard slayer (update 5 - extra time)

In the city Leery initially used darts of wounding on Ramazith.  Despite the damage he loosed a lightning bolt, but then fell.  Leery used a protection from undead scroll on the ghasts in the tower and went to take the tome.  With the Helm of Balduran and the dexterity tome also in hand Leery went after the wisdom tome - Jalantha's resistance swiftly ended with a dart of stunning.

On the way to Marek Larze showed that even the mighty can be stunned.  Leery got out his staff to beat Larze into submission before he recovered.  Against Marek Leery dodged his first two spells using the stairs before getting a poison arrow home.  Another of those was topped off with a few fire arrows to finish him off.

I haven't done the Iron Throne fight much lately, but Leery didn't have the option of sneaking past them.  He prepared by purchasing some exploding arrows, but the fight didn't start well when Diyab survived 3 direct hits by arrows to get a flame strike off.  After that I reverted to using the stairs to break opponents up and a mixture of ammunition to poison and stun them.  The only moment of concern was when I assumed that Alai would not manage to cast having been poisoned twice - he did get a spell off, despite the poison and a further hit, but fortunately it was only an acid arrow. Zhalimar was the last to go, though he did force Leery to retreat and heal up when he first attempted to close for the kill. That pointed up the weakness of the wizard slayer in melee compared to a standard fighter, but when Leery returned fully healed, there was no further reprieve.

After reporting in Leery was sent back to Candlekeep.  He recruited Imoen, expecting her to be a decent level, but she was still stuck at level 1.  Leery tried to recruit Alora, but she wasn't interested in teaming up with a dullard like Leery, so he went and got Safana instead.

Safana did her job, which was simply to open the tombs and then leave, in order not to influence normal game play.  Leery used a scroll of magic protection when tripping all the traps and then fought his way out past the dopplegangers.  Unfortunately, messing about with Safana took rather more time than it should have done and Leery's scroll had expired before he got to Prat.  He attempted to sneak past without success and had to use another scroll.  The exploding arrows allowed him to kill Bor safely, i.e. without giving him the chance to use his darts of stunning.

While the scroll was active Leery quickly set off all the web traps and killed the spiders in case he needed to run round the caverns.  It is possible to just run past the basilisks using boots of speed, but I didn't want to take the chance of a control error there, so decided to have a go with Bhaal horror.  I thought I might have to do a few rests, but both were scared at the first attempt!  While scared both were stunned and slaughtered.  Leery got the XP for level 9 in the catacombs, though he won't level up until BG2.

Back in the city Leery killed an innocent before resting in order that he got vampiric touch as his final Bhaal power.  He then did a whistle-stop tour of reputation quests left around the place to bring reputation up from 7 to 16 and used one of his 2 remaining magic protection scrolls to acquire the final tome from Durlag's Tower.  He's now back in the city ready for a confrontation with Slythe.

 Multi-player No-Reload - FINAL Update
Coretrue - level 8 Paladin, controlled by Corey_Russell
Wewa - level 10 thief, controlled by Dogdancing

Coretrue and Wewa made it out of the crypts. We cleared the first level of enemies and loot then we were full - Coretrue planned ahead and the duo used invisibility potions to get out of there.

Cythandria and her ogres were killed quickly by Coretrue's potion of absorption, haste and storm giant potion (greenstone amulet, potion of magic protection and protection from evil for defense).

We used the same buffs for Slythe. This battle was a mess. For one, Coretrue forgot to get arrows of dispelling. The duo paid for it by two quick hits by Slythe - Coretrue had to withdraw to heal, but then Wewa was getting hammered and near death. Coretrue recommended Wewa run behind a wall and hide, but she failed to do so and stood around, waiting for the stealth to re-activate. However, Coretrue's buffs kicked in and killed both Slythe and Krystin - Krystin managed to slay many peasants with her cloudkill before she died.

Now for the hardest fight of the entire run, the only fight Corey_Russell was worried about, the Duchal Palace. Via buffs, Coretrue had 25 STR and using the bastard sword with +3 vs. shapeshifters and haste, wewa also had haste potion. Coretrue tried to concentrate attacks on the dopplegangers attacking the dukes as was Wewa, but Coretrue got stuck! He could only attack a doppleganger that WASN"T attacking the duke, the duo lost precious seconds here. So Coretrue burned down the doppleganger attacking Coretrue and Wewa kept attacking the doppleganger attacking Belt, but Lia was killed already, 3 dopplegangers on Belt was too much and both dukes died - automatic death of Coretrue and the end of the run.
Posted Image

EDIT: I reloaded it to see what WOULD have worked - using the same buffs, I had the party move in and left. Then tuned on auto-pause target gone, and attacked the dopplegangers attacking Belt with our sling and shortbow +3 - some of the dopplegangers attacked Wewa, which is good. Doing this strategy, BOTH dukes survived. We'll keep that in mind in our next attempt, as we will probably be melees again.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 21 - (update 1)
Leery, human wizard slayer (Grond0) & various (Gate70)

The intention for this run is for Gate70 to control various NPCs (one at a time) in support of Leery.  It would be difficult to describe the early stages of this duotrioquartetquintet as entirely promising, but they will persevere.

The first small error was when I realised I had not started a fresh game and that there were no NPCs for Gate70 to recruit in Candlekeep.  Manfully resisting the temptation to use ctrl-Q to bring Carbos into the party he waited while Leery ignored all the Candlekeep quests and ran out into the big wide world.

Imoen was waiting to join and immediately reduced the number of NPCs available by attempting to pickpocket Xzar.  After killing him and Montaron, she seemed to have no view about what should be done next, so Leery suggested they get a free level each by going after Shoal.  After all, what could go wrong?  Well, as already hinted at by Gate70 in an earlier post, Shoal's a dangerous character if you can't see through the lag to tell when she's leaning in for a kiss - scratch one Imoen.

Never mind, there's plenty more NPCs out there!  As the immediate destination was Beregost the next to join was Kagain.  He lasted long enough to kill Noober, relieve an ogre of his belts and slice down a few hobgoblins at the FAI.  However, even with a dwarvish constitution he found it difficult to remain next to a source of magic missiles.  Tarnesh paid the price, but had the satisfaction of knowing the missiles already in the air would kill Kagain as he fell himself.
Posted Image

I think Gate70 felt a bit relieved at that death, after being somewhat bemused at hearing Kagain use Imoen's voice, and fortunately a replacement NPC was to hand.  Talking to Khalid and Jaheira got them to join and Khalid was immediately deposited in Joia's house before being removed from the party.  That left Leery with Jaheira then I hear you cry ... well, not exactly.  In a stunning display of multi-player acrobatics Khalid made an immediate escape from the locked house and departed in a huff - taking Jaheira with him.

Leery by now was starting to wonder just how many NPCs there were in the game! Before shutting down for the night he went to recruit one more - Ajantis.

Leery, wizard slayer 3, 36 HPs, 19 kills
Roster of discarded NPCs: Xzar, Montaron, Imoen, Kagain, Khalid, Jaheira

Grond0 - your adventures with Gate70 being an NPC sounds interesting - is Gate70 not allowed to be raised? Best of luck in your run regardless.

And thanks all for the commiserations. I learned something new from the run. I would hate to end a run and not learn anything from the failure. So since that isn't the case, I'm OK with the result. Though I certainly would have rather given Sarevok a shank of steel...

We do have a starting save in Candlekeep. We might restart the run once more, we both like our characters, even though we failed. Wewa learned a lot of solo thief fighting, which is unnecessary in a full group, but helpful in a duo.

Leery - human wizard slayer (update 6 - penalties)

I didn't want to take the chance of getting into a fair fight with Slythe, so (unusually for me) used a dispelling arrow on him from distance.  Before he could catch up to Leery he had also been tagged with a dart of stunning for an easy kill.

At the palace I again had no confidence in Leery's ability to prevail in a fair fight and was thus planning to use the stairs.  First though I thought I would see what Leery could do with a Bhaal horror to see if he could scare a couple of dopplegangers.  He couldn't, so he immediately sprinted upstairs.  Three dopplegangers followed and they would have been easy meat with the room to move around there, but to speed things up a bit I used exploding arrows.  Unfortunately I hadn't noticed a stupid civilian wandering in one of the rooms and all that hard-earned reputation disappeared again.

With the first 3 dead Leery briefly went downstairs to attract more.  Two of them followed him back up, before I was momentarily surprised when the third appeared in front of him having come up the other set of stairs.  That allowed one of them to get a single hit in, but they were then swiftly killed and Leery returned downstairs to give the dukes the information about Sarevok's treachery.

He killed the inhabitants of the maze before reading his last protection from magic scroll to trip the traps (guarding against an incautious return this time).  With that protection still up he was happy to commit his last 8 exploding arrows against the Undercity party.  They dealt with most of the opposition, though Leery was down to acid arrows to finish off Carston and Gorf.

With plenty of healing potions available he was quickly back to full health and ready for his final BG1 test.

Leery - human wizard slayer (update 7 - final whistle)

Leery took no risks against Sarevok.  He was dragged away from his support crew with a dispelling arrow and brought up to the far end of the temple.  Arrows of biting had no chance of poisoning him, so Leery switched to the 100 or so acid arrows he had (he is non-proficient with bows so these did slightly less damage per hit than his throwing axe, but could be used more frequently).

Sarevok survived the acid attack, but was at near death so Leery switched to staff.  The high weapon speed of the martial staff means it's normally possible to attack with that without retaliation and just a couple of swings were sufficient to polish Sarevok off.

Before reporting back to Belt Leery sold a bit of unneeded equipment in order to finance a session of repentance at the temple - emerging from that with his reputation restored to heroic proportions.

Here's his final character record.  You can see that I've let him acquire considerably more XP than normal for BG1 - that was deliberate as the early stages of BG2 are particularly challenging for a non-shorty wizard slayer and the excess XP will give him a bit of a flying start there.

Corey, sorry to hear about your and Dogdancing's run ending with the death of the Dukes. Bummer. Way to go with the multiplayer challenge, though... looks tough.

Nice work on showing Sarevok the way out, Grond0! Good luck with your flying start in Amn!
