Klonk / Yeslick / Imoen / Kivan / Shar Teel / Viconia
(Shar Teel: fighter 4)Klonk flicks through the NPC guide, of the few who can handle a longbow two come with buddies so there are only a couple more plus Garrick to consider. Shar Teel wants to fight Klonk and everybody winces as the half-orc bashes her to the ground. She’s survived though and grudgingly steps into line. Klonk suggests she forget all about two handed swords or crossbows and catch up with a longbow and long sword instead (SK’d).

She suggests Klonk and Yeslick swap girdles to protect them from each other. Klonk is busy arguing about this until Imoen is charmed by a trapped altar. Shar Teel tells the impressionable Kivan and Yeslick to stand guard as the others head upstairs and run into a succubus called Kirinhale. Klonk has berserked this time and after a few arrows hit home his 2 handed critical (19) obliterates her with a chunky 54.

Yeslick is tapping on the ground. “Any tower a dwarf built goes down further than it goes up” he says to nobody in particular. Imoen prods a secret door and Yeslick looks smug.

Once he saves with a 1 against a greater basilisk Klonk decides it is safe to join him and speed the process up. What can possibly go wrong?
(so presumably Yeslick rolled a 0?)

At a guess the lesser basilisk saving throw is unadjusted and the greater one is at -2.  The die roll shown on the screen is the adjusted one (which is why you can see saving throws of more than 20 against e.g. chromatic orb).
Edit: Katana, in my Wrecking Crew, just saved vs a greater basilisk at an adjusted die roll of -2, so I suspect the save is at a -4 penalty.

A botched Brage attempt left a Blind madman running all over the map; I forgot that Potions of Freedom (and he has one, under SCS) don't play nicely with Slower Moving Speeds (and especially not Full Plate and Packing Steel). The guy became a speed demon, and only Blindness saved Imoen (narrowly) from death. We fled, but luckily managed to find him on our return, whereupon Web and Blindness did him in. Unfortunately, Laryssa had disappeared (do you have to talk to her before Brage?)

On the way back we bumped in Bassilus, another madman in the woods. Imoen Webbed him, but he saved vs Blindness and after hitting her with Hold Person, smacked an Unholy Blight on her, too, killing her. I fled and got her resurrected, returned, and performed the same Web + Blindness trick on him...

Only for some reason, he's become invincible. I think it's SCS's script for healing folk when you flee and come back, only it's completely borked so he constantly heals himself up to full. I tried resting, and leaving the area and returning, and it still happens, so I'll calling "bug" on this one and hitting him with Ctrl+Y...
Annoying, since I lose the XP, but I don't think it breaks the quest or anything.

So Imoen is now on 2 deaths, and I am now on "very little" gold...

The four dwarven warders
A slow rate of progress is maintained as Klonk and co grind their way to Love, Pride, Fear and Avarice. Yeslick takes three backstabs but his buffs soak up most of the damage.

The Doors
Some decent progress is made here with Yeslick careful to front a greater doppelganger in a poisonous mist cloud. Good job too as Klonk collapses twice while saving his energy for later. The four dwarven warders take a minute or so to get into their stride (as I remember that even missiles +1 are no use against them) then all of a sudden they take Klonk from solid frontman to a quivering mess with 4 hits in a couple of seconds (attacking while diseased was a bit silly but resting has it's own dangers).
Image IPB.

Klonk glugs and runs as Shar Teel steps in - glugging a defence potion as does Kivan. Viconia dooms three times but Shar Teel is hit twice and dies. Kivan holds his ground better as does Yeslick and Klonk glugs a heroism to attack from behind Kivan. The dwarven doom guards are wise to this and target Klonk but their burst of enthusiasm has waned and they are cut down one after another.

(With that close encounter complete it is time to head to a temple to raise Shar Teel and sell some items)

Nobody is in a rush to return to Durlag’s Tower, instead we investigate the Iron Throne HQ.Image IPB

After upgrading Shar Teel’s armour we can put it off no longer, returning to the Tower and making our way through a fireball chamber before killing three greater wyverns which prove to be extremely tough going.

Klonk and the King come out to play but only one will see the end of day. Klonk is briefly surrounded but then spots the King and moves round to attack him as Yeslick dooms. Kivan, Imoen and Shar Teel lock their bows while Viconia is trying to protect Imoen from lightning (I struggled here, another few seconds and Klonk would have been in major trouble).Image IPB

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 22 - (final update)
Rose, human stalker (Grond0) & Grub, halfling assassin (Gate70)

Grub sorted out equipment and bought replacements, such as a shortbow, where necessary.  Then the duo swiftly moved on with the main quest.  Slythe caught a dispelling arrow to get rid of his haste.  He still managed to hit the non-potioned Rose several times before Grub's poison caught up with him.

At the palace Rose quaffed potions and stood up as a target for the dopplegangers.  Meanwhile Grub was using the dopplegangers as a target for one of his latest cocktails - a mixture of dispelling arrows and assassin's poison proved a potent brew as the dopplegangers were quickly vanquished with both dukes surviving.

In the maze Grub did a good job of disabling traps - using the persistence of stealth to first identify and then disarm those near the skeleton warriors while still hidden from them.  The Undercity party was left alone and the duo moved on to the temple.

Rose was slow to move after shooting an initial arrow at Sarevok and I thought we might get his cronies joining in the fight, but they decided to sit it out after all apart from one long-distance remove magic.  Rose & Grub were spoilt for choice on how to kill him, so mixed up a few arrows with a few backstabs.  Hiding and backstabbing while not pausing in multi-player is not particularly easy, but they got a few good ones in, although Sarevok did hit Grub once in response (dangerous as a single critical would still be likely to kill him).  Eventually, with Sarevok at near death, both our backstabbers hid and joined in together for a final flourish.

Stats
Rose, stalker L7, 84 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 135 kills
Grub, assassin L8, 42 HPs, 75 kills, 2 deaths

Indros - Cleric/Ranger. Update 2. Image IPB

I was born to speak the truth. Fear is the creation of my heart. It is not outside of myself. I travel the woodlands in the shadow of Solonor Thelandira, lord of wild and harsh places. I pray to the sunset and to the Lord of the Continuum, the archer of the arrow of time. I don't need to know the origin of my birth to feel the gifts of the Seldarine in my half-elven heart.

***

Imoen died today. Fortunately, Helm deigned to raise her.

We had stumbled upon a mage threatening a wizardress inside a tent at the Nashkel Carnival. He would not hear reason, and battle seemed to be the only option, much to my chagrin. He temporarily struck down my eyes, before shocking Imoen's heart to a stop with a lightning bolt. Only my whispered prayers to Labelas Enoreth sustained me long enough for my flail to connect and deliver me to safety.

I am Indros. I choose to act in the service of love. I speak these words and hear them for truth. I will know my past. I will discover my future.

Wrecking Crew (update 3)

The Crew picked up the tomes in the City along with the Helm & Cloak of Balduran, the Helm of Glory and the Gauntlets of Ogre Power.  None of the fights were too difficult:
- a ghast in Ramazith's tower managed to hold Flail, but they all died quickly thereafter.
- Jalantha couldn't quite manage to finish her flame strike under the weight of missile fire.
- Gretek got several blows in forcing 2-H to retreat briefly, but everyone else died easily.
- the fight with Degrodel's minions was probably the toughest combat.  Katana was taking the heat for the others as usual, but did have to use several healing potions to keep safe before the enemies were all disposed of.  The Crew got up to level 6 there; everyone got a good HP roll except Boss - who's now the weakest character.
- at the Iron Throne everyone started off by chucking in a potion to liven things up.  Only Alai managed to get a spell off (which bounced off Hammer's saving throws) before the Throne was cleared.
- Degrodel was presented with the Helm of Balduran, but didn't live long enough to enjoy it.
- Katana used a potion of invulnerability before facing a greater basilisk.  That gave her a saving throw vs death of -3 (which she needed as she saved with -2).

Did a bit of stealing to keep reputation in single figures until Duke Eltan sent the party back to Candlekeep with the idea of getting vampiric touch.  However, I realised there that I hadn't brought along any decent strength potions so the strength tome is unavailable.  I've got frost giant strength, but I'm pretty sure that won't be enough without DUHM to even get the wisdom tome.

Stats (no deaths to date)
Boss, fighter 5, 55 HPs, 140 kills
Katana, fighter 5, 59 HPs, 48 kills
Axe, fighter 5, 66 HPs, 133 kills
2-H, fighter 5, 62 HPs, 52 kills
Flail, fighter 5, 52 HPs, 59 kills
Hammer, fighter 5, 53 HPs, 84 kills

Started a new game with vanilla game plus DSoSC.

The vanilla game is a bit on the easy side if you are a Paladin or Lawful Good Cleric as there are items available which are a bit too powerful for the vanilla game.

Better would have been to have those items only available upon entering the DSoSC new areas.

In this game I have a Paladin with high stats who is good with bows large swords and later on spiked weapons as well.

Team members: Imoen, Ajantis, Dynaheir, Minsc, and Yeslick who was replaced by the mod cleric. having read the read through, I had already dumped most of Yeslick's equipment in Beregost, so as not to lose it when she
joined.

Up to when I started the mod just after the second visit to Candlekeep, I did most areas but left a few quests unfinished in case of accidental reputation drop.

Since Drizzt attacked my army of gnolls without provocation, I felt justified in killing him. "Peaceful at heart?" No Way! Image IPB
I forgot to pick up the bow belonging to Hakt,Image IPB but there was a good bow from the mod which I gave to AjantisImage IPB (Only useable by paladins) Ajantis died twice as a result of taking on wyverns that attacked the partyImage IPB. Poison was the problem. However, the 2000gp reward for the wyverns made it profitable as he cost about 1000gp to resurrectImage IPB. Dynaheir died in the BG sewers as a result of being poisoned by phase spiders.Image IPB By that time I had more gold than I could spend. Made a mistake in not recharging t he necklace of missilesImage IPB. It ran out in Candlekeep. Still have the other one though. Image IPB

Just hope that I haven't started DSoSC too soon.

It's hard so I might have been better doing Durlag's Tower etc. first. Wait and see.

Wrecking Crew (final update)

The Crew robbed the one tomb they could open with frost giant strength and killed some spiders and dopplegangers on the way to Prat's party.  Katana was confused at the start of that fight, which resulted in her being hit twice with lightning bolts, but her good AC kept her going with something to spare while the others killed Prat & co.

On the way out Katana again took a potion of invulnerability to take her saving throw vs death down to -3.  One greater basilisk was dead and the other one near death when this happened.
Image IPB

That either means the basilisk save is at a penalty of more than -4 or that something funny happened.  I suspect the latter, but I'll leave the game there anyway.

Hard luck Grond0.

I usually either use potions of mirrored eyes or kill them with oil of fiery burning/explosions/necklace of missiles/wand of fire.

However in DSoSC I have a ring that protects the wearer. Very useful, but still nearly died due to normal damage.

Didn't have potions of healing and game doesn't hold whilst doing inventory management. By the time I had the potions the basilisks were dead.

I have a problem with DSoSC. I can't find Jet's sister!

Here are the instructions in the read me.

To access the LS maps you need to go through Peldvale. People have trouble finding the access, so the co-ordinates are x=5020, y=638, map 2400. Co-ordinate access

is achieved by pressing the "L" key on your keyboard, and it pinpoints the location of your mouse pointer. There are 3 LS maps. The first is inconsequential. On the second map, you must observe the phantoms doing battle for a while. Just stand and watch. Nothing happens, but it is a prerequisite for what will come. Be very careful
on these maps, as undead exist that can and will suck your experience and levels. Quick save after each little battle, AFTER you have checked that you haven't been sucked for XP. If you have, resume from the previous quick save. This will save you a world of grief.
Enter the last LS map at night. As close to midnight is best. You also need to clear out the undead nasties that are located in a cavern in the north central portion of this map. Now you have to search for Jet's sister. She is pretty close to the cavern that you cleaned out. You know you are close when you hear wailing and moaning.
When you find her, Jet will engage in conversation and ask if you still want to help. You better say "yes" else you are screwed. On her sister's body is a necklace of importance. Right click on it for a very helpful game hint.

I Have done that. Entered the area after 11 pm and cleared the cave. Is there anything else I should do? It is now hour 21. The undead were no problem. Just used summoned monsters. :D

Yeah, Dark Side is cool but the stuff is just too much, IMO. The only no-reload game I ever really got very far on was a Dark Side one, and my gear is just too good for the normal game so I packed it in (still L6 or higher, in Ch 5 in BG, with shedloads of cool gear). To be honest, the assassins you have to fight to get them are too tough too; you pretty much have to avoid them and come back later, which makes the game tougher for sure, but once you do get by them, it seems almost too easy.
Grond, I just had a look at the Greater Bassilisk - it does indeed appear to apply a -4 penalty to saves. :?

In other news, Daakaris and Imoen cashing in Bassilus' ill-gotten symbol, solving those money issues, killed some bandits (Jemby and Tengyan and that Hobgoblin guy) with liberal applications of Web, then Sleep for the Hobgoblin (Zekar?), Blindness for Tengyan, and finally Horror from Daakaris for the mage (Imoen had tried to MM-interrupt her Mirror Image, but was too slow, so Daakaris had to act).

The other killed (with some difficulty) Sahedra's ogres, and spoke to Bjornin about his Half-Ogres, gaining a magic sheild. They now have a fair few magic items, so stashed most of them in Beregost. Since Daakaris found a scroll of Protection from Petrification, I'm tempted to head to the Bassilisk area (though I've always done it with skellies before). The other option is to grab Ajantis; he's an Inquisitor, though I was thinking about making him a Cavalier; either way, he should be able to deal with the Sirene area.

I need to think about what party I want in the long run, too. I still have Khalid as a Fighter/Mage and Jaheira as a Cleric/Stalker (slight cheat since I gave them both kits I know) from last time and kinda want to see if Jaheira gets her Stalker spells at the lower level (IIRC, she doesn't, but she might get them as a Cleric if she reaches a high enough Stalker level).

Found her. Had to wait until 22.00 hours and was where I expected her.

She had turned into a banshee and at Jet's request we killed her, fortunately without level drain.

Party was protected from fear apart from Minsc.

I think that you have confused Dark Side of the sword Coast with Dark Horizons.

So far in DSoSC I have met mainly undead and dragons. The dragon ended my last run after level drain from the undead. No remedy for level drain in BG1! :(

That accounts for my use of summoned monsters this time.:) It worked a treat as the shadows etc are not too powerful as long as you don't get drained!

The Dark Horizons assassins are indeed difficult until you learn how to deal with them. With them, summoned monsters can again be used in order to make them visible. I used charm to get the flaming fist to fight Tristan and Isolde when I played that mod.

Ah yeah, I think I amalgamated them in my head.

Dark Horizons was indeed the crazy one with the crazy assassins and overpowered loot.

Dark Side, however, also lacked polish a bit, IMO. IIRC, when you get her, Jet'Laya is a significantly higher level than the group (or is likely to be) and all her spells are screwed up until you level her up.

The Shadows also permanently halve your XP. What's up with that? I thought there was a newer version which didn't do that, but it's not the version I have. The thing is, TotSC has Level Drain I believe (Kirinhale in Durlag's uses it) so they should probably have used that. Although, I though Shadows did Str drain anyway?

The dragon was also ridiculous, and the dragonslayer dude you meet has overpowered gear just to be able to deal with it. I think the only way I beat it was because it glitched out and stopped attacking me.

So yeah, two different mods, but a similar theme (getting carried away with bad guys and loot, and a lack of "polish"). I mean, I enjoyed trying them both, but have since removed both of them. SCS is probably enough for me (though I still have the Grey Clan, which was pretty good).

Daakaris and Co.
Daakaris and Imoen cleared a few Bassilisks with relative ease, earning Imoen a level up. Mutamin posed more of an issue; we eventually blinded him, leading to another speed-demon chase around the map. In the end I gave up and rested, saved, and was about to log off when he popped up and attacked me again. Killing him got Daakaris up to Mage L5, unlocking his Assassin abilities again.

We picked up Khalid and Jaheira, and after fixing their proficiencies and stuff manually (Jaheira had too many, I think) we headed off. The Ogre/Bear/River area was lagging to I went to Shipwreck Coast, where Shoal the Nereid kissed Imoen, then proceeded to one-shot Khalid. Daakaris attacked from invisibility, hitting and he and Jaheira took her down to "near death" before she got him too. An ignoble end.

I'm tempted to call "bug" on this one, because Shoal's script seems to say she's supposed to start dialogue again, resigning as soon as she's hit once, and by the looks of it she was going to continue to the bitter end (which, even if I'd killed her, would have left me without the chance to get the Helm of Peace from Droth, if it hasn't been moved by the Item Randomiser). Eh, I guess them's the breaks but it's a shame, I was just starting to get properly going.

 Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-Player Trilogy No-Reload - Update 4 (Attempt #5)
Coretrue (Protagonist) - Level 6 Paladin, 61 HP
Wewa - Level 6 Thief, 31 HP

The duo continues to make progress. We needed lots of experience to take on the Ankhegs and thus get to Ulgoth's Beard. So we decided to try to take on the Basilisks.

For pre-travel prep, Coretrue bought two mirror eyes potions from Thalantyr, and gave one to Wewa. He also bought a stone to flesh scroll from the Beregost Temple, then they made their way to the Baslisk area - uh, oh, Basilisk waylay! Duo uses their potions then takes it down. Then Coretrue finishes the worgs, Wewa couldn't see the worgs for some reason. This does mean there is no protection on the way back...

We actually had no gaze protection once we got to Baslisk map. Reason why is we aren't here to fight Basilisks just yet, but to take on the adventuring party. Since we are vanilla BG 1, Kiran's party loot will fill up our inventory, so we will have to leave and return. The actual battle was a bit anti-climatic. Coretrue noticed a faint image of one of the enemy party members and so used his necklace of missiles 4 times out of sight - success! Kirian's party dead, with Coretrue and Wewa not even being targeted. Sure enough, we were full and left, sold, bought the last mirror eyes potion from Thalantyr and bought the scroll of petrification protection.

We then returned to Basilisk area. Coretrue gave the mirror eyes to Wewa, while Coretrue used the scroll - then duo then bee-lined to Mutamutin and his pets. As it turned out, this battle was easy, as Wewa managed to poison Mutamutin with arrows of biting - he never got a spell off. The rest of map was then easy to clear without further incident, Wewa played carefully so she didn't get targeted by a Basilisk, while Coretrue put the beat down on those beasts.

Huge problem leaving the area though - basilisk waylay! We had auto-pause enemy sighted - the basilisk is very close. Grond0 says you can just run south away from it but I don't see how that can work here, it will get at least one attack for sure. Coretrue said for Wewa to use the party's only mirror eyes potion, but Wewa said no, she can't kill it in 10 rounds but Coretrue can, and also Coretrue must not die. Coretrue agreed, used the potion and unpaused - Wewa was instantly turned to stone! Coretrue slew the beast and the two worgs in the area. Coretrue used his stone to flesh scroll on Wewa and brought her back to life and the duo left the area. Glad we are done with Basilisks for now...

Now that Coretrue had 55 HP (at this point), he felt confident that they could take on the Ankhegs pretty safely. The duo does in fact clear the Ankhegs on the farm and in the nest without any particular trouble. Coretrue tried the sleep wand, which people say work well on the Ankhegs, but not a single Ankheg ever took a nap...the duo won nevertheless.

Now that Ulgoth's Beard is unlocked the duo got their potion of mind focusing and two potions of thieving from Durlag's Tower merchant, and headed to Ulgoth's Beard. Primary target is Dushai's free action ring. We also got the greenstone amulet and cloak of displacement while we are here.

Next session, Wewa will try to rob Ulgoth's Beard blind...

@Corey, way to let your lady love turn to stone! I bet you were glad that you had a stone-to-flesh scroll handy. Nice update, well played.

@The Fred, were you using a modded version of Shoal? I've seen a version of Shoal that displaces and has a water demon and such... she's stopped several of my runs. I'm not sure what mod introduces it, perhaps aTweaks? Anyway, my sympathies for Daakaris. Your run was looking intriguing.

@Grimwald, good luck with DSoSC!

@Grond0, Sorry to hear of the demise of the wrecking crew! Boss will make a lovely statue though, what with the grimace of petrification frozen on his face forever.... RIP. Got another crew up your sleeve? I liked your all-bard party idea. I guess I'm attracted to labor-intensive runs with high odds of failure.

Indeed.  That doesn't surprise me, but Katana should have had an automatic save against that as she had a saving throw required of -3.  Hence my suspicion that something had gone wrong.

Not at the moment - I'm pretty sure a bard party would be doomed to failure in my hands at the moment.  Having played around with the Wrecking Crew I'm fairly confident I could take them all the way without it seeming too much hassle and I might restart them at some point.

Looks like the basilisks are on a roll recently with 3 recent stonings. Nicely recovered Corey, not so nicely recovered Grond0 - I'm tempted to roll a character up and see exactly what is going on - almost as though the penalty is applied twice (a critical gaze?)

The Fred, I usually attack Shoal one hit at a time, e.g. if one character misses the next shoots. Hitting her more than once often seems to stop her dialogue or kill her even in vanilla.

Hmm, sounds kinda sketchy for sure. Does BG not have failure on natural 1s? That, or maybe it caps you at 0 (wouldn't have thought so, but who knows)?

No, I don't think so; I do have a lot of aTweaks installed, but she just attacked like normal. Besides, I checked her actual script, which does call for her to start dialogue when hit. I can only assume I interrupted that by hitting her too many times too quickly or something, but it seems inherantly sketchy also... :?

I might experiment and see if I can figure it out; at least then I'd know.

& I believe the same is true with Tenya, something like a second attack turning them hostile again in the same way that a single attack would turn a neutral character hostile. Does that make sense?

Klonk / Yeslick / Imoen / Kivan / Shar Teel / Viconia

Imoen clears various traps while Yeslick and Klonk melee any resistance while Viconia has memorised two free actions so Kivan and Shar Teel can help as required.

(The biggest problem is a crash before opening the door to Grael, meaning about ⅓ of the cavern area has to be re-done).

Kivan lands the killing blow on Grael, and after answering a few stone golem questions (no errors here, much easier than the Amaunator statue in SoA) Durlag opens a stubborn door. Clair De’lain is quickly calmed down and the party prepare to deal with the evil within (without withering).

Klonk and Yeslick attack from the north and east respectively, being de-buffed before a fireball hits. Both glug a healing potion but the Demon Knight uses PW:Stun (first time I can remember doing this with sound and he clearly says it). Yeslick is held so Viconia switches from a second doom to remove paralysis. Yeslick can’t survive that long however, both he and the Demon Knight collapse before the spell arrives.Image IPB
