By the way charm also ends the game - been there, done that more than once.  That's one reason why the green amulet is so useful in BG1.

AFAIK, this only happens when your whole party is charmed/dominated, and only in SCS or BGII or something, not vanilla BG.

I haven't played solo before but it still doesn't make much sense since the effect wears off after awhile.

This is very curious. I played about 25 games before starting to mod, and in plenty of vanilla games I not only soloed regularly, but got charmed without the game ending. The last game I didn't solo, so I don't know. Now you have me worried!

The Adventures of Pallyn the Sorrowful

Nothing much to report; after killing the sirenes, we entered a mysterious cave, but were attacked by Flesh Golems! We dispatched the first easily enough, but after the second landed a 20-damage hit on Khalid, we decided to withdraw (though not before killing it and a third - good XP, too).
With Imoen now fully dualed, we headed back into the Cloakwood after a brief stop at Beregost. We were attacked by Ettercaps en route and when we arrived at the river, but Khalid and Jaheira meleed them quite effectively (and Khalid only got poisoned once, something which my strange ability to heal people quickly fixed). We met some druids who warned us of a nearby dragon - and for now, at least, we're steering clear, however much they might be offering for it's head (strange, that, for druids). Instead, we proceeded north, narrowly escaping from some spiders and a wyvern attack - Imoen burned up her memorised Mirror Image to protect herself whilst she distracted the beasts from the others.

We are now a little deeper in the Cloakwood, and feeling somewhat uneasy. Luckily, however, both Khalid and Pallyn have just gained levels, granting Pallyn 3rd-level spells and Khalid an extra proficiency point in bows (wasn't sure whether to take bows, axes or swords, but bows are what he's using most right now, and even at the end he will likely want to use magical arrows etc).

So, the team now looks like this:
Pallyn Cleric 5 -> Conjurer 5
Imoen Thief 4 -> Illusionist 5
Khalid Fighter 6
Jaheira Fighter 5 / Druid 5

As Wierdo said a few posts earlier it does seem more reasonable that charm ends a game than maze as your characters are normally subject to attack by the person doing the charming.  Having said that it is by no means guaranteed that attacking a charmed creature will result in death - as is pretty clear from what happens if you attack something you have charmed.  Therefore I think the game would have been better if charm did not result in instant death for solo players; this would also avoid the ridiculous situation where you are charmed / killed by a trap with no enemies anywhere near.

You had me worried too.  I don't have any old saved games, but just loaded up my last position with Trapp and sent him off to Durlag's Tower to find a charming trap.  This is what happened:

I'm pretty sure this is what should happen in vanilla - just what form of divine intervention was saving you in the past I don't know (but please send some of it along to meImage IPB).

Ahhhh... NOW I see it. When I made my clearly controversial statement on the effects of Charm, I was referring to the Charm spell (i.e., sirines, mages- which I'm certain doesn't kill a solo BG1 char), not a Charm trap (which actually I didn't know about until right now...) I think I recall that that trap that killed Trapp has killed my solo chars before, but I never knew why and just reloaded. Well, that's annoying! Why would that kill...? Modders! Help!

My lawyer has advised me to make no further statements on Charm traps or effects until litigation is resolved. Until such time, Charm is good, Charm is great.

Vanilla BG allows you to continue if charmed. Prove with creature sirine. Edit, also proved by moving to AR0504
It is fatal in vanilla BG2. Prove with sirine01

Hargis, NG human male beast master.

Our journel is badly organised so we struggle to remember events. Coran has been killed by a battle horror and raised at the cost of 800xp. He and Ajantis have been energy-drained by a succubus called Kirinhale, with Ajantis also charmed. Another 800gp is needed for Coran after we ignore Bayard and our rest is interrupted by a room full of ghasts.

This is true. In fact, though the trap does fire off what is technically a unique spell (spell number 1982, or "Priest" 982), it appears to be identical in every way to the 3rd-level wizard spell Dire Charm, Charming humanoid creatures for 120 seconds. I think this is a mod, but it also appears to ignore Elves and Half-elves.

The instant death resulting from charming is, I believe, an engine difference in the way BG2 handles Charm, which is carried through to TuTu (as far as I know - though I do recall reading something about SCS being to blame), rather than anything to do with the spells themselves.

The Adventures of Pallyn the Sorrowful

We press on into the Cloakwood, but are set upon first by bears, and then by winter wolves. Remembering an offer of good money for their pelts down in Nashkel, we decided to head back to civilization and sell up. Whilst there, we also decided it might be worth having another venture near the Gnoll Stronghold. Any thinning of their numbers we do will be a service to the area, and it'll be good practice for when we infiltrate the Claokwood Mines. Besides, after another close encounter, I really didn't fancy facing those wyverns again.

The stronghold wasn't much trouble - we were able to cleave our way in with relative ease, with the exception of one or two fights. The first was an encounter with a Gnoll Clan Leader - we decided not to pull any punches, and let off Entangle and Horror. The leader's henchgnoll was thoroughly incapacitated, but he himself simply shrugged them off. Luckily, Imoen's Blindness took hold and we easily dispatched him. Then, however, we were set upon by the rest of his gang. Entangle again and Sleep took them all out, followed up shortly by a Fireball. It didn't take long to punch arrows into each of them to make sure they were dead.

Further up the stronghold, however, we ran into the chieftain and his lackies. I have a nice screenshot of Khalid holding them at a choke point, whilst we rained missiles down on their backlines. The only difficulty came when another Clan Leader showed his face. Pallyn released a Horror which struck the hearts of all the gnolls, but they seemed to be overcome with a panicked frenzy rather than a cowering fear. So, instead, both he and Immy turned to Blindness, but this leader seemed unaffected by it, and managed to get off a number of nasty hits (including a 19-damage hit on Pallyn) before we took him out (resorting to a little Magic Missile use for extra security).

So, we've decided to withdraw for the time being. The party is doing well, and well-equipped with (overpowered) DH items, but I still want to train up a tad before doing the Cloakwood mines. It'd be nice to have Pallyn's Cleric spells back, at any rate, which will happen at his next level-up (about 17k XP to go, I think). After all, this is a no-reload challenge, and one can't afford to take chances.

Hargis, NG human male beast master.

I decide to kill Rieltar and protest my innocence when arrested. Tethtoril helps us escape and Alora breezes through the corridors and catacombs. With Prat and his gang dead we return to Baldurs Gate where Coran and Alora help me rescue Duke Eltan.

Alora doesn't want us to get caught so we use the back-alleys and sewers to meet Tamoko then hunt down Slythe, Kristin and Cythandria.

Both dukes survive the coronation assassination attempt.
Image IPB

Coran stands back while our summons close in on Sarevok. Alora lands a critical hit, as does Liia. Sarevok decides to flee but as he departs I hit him with an arrow.
Image IPB

Coran, fighter 6 thief 7. 115 kills, Slythe.
Hargis, beastmaster 7. 398 kills, greater basilisk.
Imoen, mage 8 thief 4. 85 kills, Ramazith.
Alora, thief 8. 124 kills, greater doppelganger.
Quayle, illusionist 7 cleric 7. 27 kills, doom guard.
Ajantis, paladin 7. 254 kills, greater basilisk.

The Andrizztyl Saga, Day 32: "Underwhelming Overpowering" or "Coming Full Circle," Part 1
Departing from the Beregost temple, the Quintro++ traveled the long, peril-ridden, wilderness region between the temple... and the town of Beregost... and thus it came as no surprise that they were ambushed by monsters... This time, however, their foes were kobolds. Plain kobolds. One archer. A plain archer. Of course they first started running out of there at top BGT walking speed, figuring that kobolds now had pets too... but, no. And so they were slaughtered and pillaged... and the party relaxed a few moments... The Russian Roulette wheel had not fired one of those type of chambers...

In Beregost Andrizztyl led everyone to a little scene that had been been pregnant with some purpose for many weeks now. While Minsc's supposed damsel in distress was languishing distressfully elsewhere, Andrizztyl decided now was a good time to confront some local Beregost bards about an offer. Kivan did protest, concerned for Minsc's damsel... Minsc did not... And Andrizztyl merely went along with one bard to talk to the other, whereupon suddenly more bards arrived. The 2nd bard seemed to insist that the 3rd through 5th bards were thugs, and Andrizztyl might have doubted her veracity if only the 3rd through 5th bards hadn't distracted him by mentioning gems... And thus did the Quintro oblige the 2nd bard, and then there were two. But that number was reduced in half immediately upon discovering that, first of all, there were no gems, only potions, and secondly, the general Beregost population had decided to lower their reputation score by 2 points. The powerful bardic foe was rather easily exploded by an Andrizztyl backstab... (All bard counts not including the Quick Bard...) And the 1st bard was left to find other offers for them...

Despite the reputation loss (down to Rep 14) the party was still considered "popular" and every party member except Imoen began praising the "noble deed" done...

Gavin: "The gods shall smile upon our actions..."
Andrizztyl: "Yes... Shar and Umberlee shall smile on our actions..."
Gavin: "Wait, that's not what I meant..."
Imoen: "Well, say what you mean next time..."
Gavin: "As you wish. But I do mostly intend Lathander when I say it."
Kivan: "Then why not say 'Lathander shall smile upon our actions.'"
Gavin: "Wouldn't that sound presumptuous?"
Andrizztyl: "Does presuming that *all* gods smile on our actions sound any less so?"

Then they decided to return to their delayed promise to Minsc (and Boo)... Well, not quite yet. On the way back south they stopped by some hobgoblins to procure a free hobgob helmet for Kivan who had been neglected thus far, and to finally eliminate Tristan's sanguinary beloved... who went down by simple summoned skeleton swats and a single Kivan arrow... despite lots of pointless spellslinging...And another overpowered treasure was theirs...

Then they headed back to the gnoll stronghold... well, after a trip to the Carnival stashpoint again to drop off and reequip... But then they were there. The fortress loomed. Memories of the losses that had been sustained rushed back to them. So Imoen kicked Andrizztyl... but then they closed in... with Andrizztyl limping somewhat... everyone anticipating yet another wave upon wave of those knockdown-prone leaders with their likewise powerful hair-dyed cohorts... and as they climbed the dreaded stairs to where they had witnessed Minsc reduced to a corpse... they found...

Xvarts...

Plain xvarts... which did not know how to knock anyone down, did not have uberequipment, and did not have dyed hair (or hair at all)... And up the stairs to main platform, they found no powerful gnolls either... just the types that fall nicely to a single Andrizttyl backstab... In fact they swept through the entire place like a parlour trick until soon there was nothing left. Andrizztyl even demonstrated his stealthing skills by physically blocking any movement down the stairs by gnolls... while hiding in shadows and not making a sound... Now that's a feat!

And then they met Dynaheir...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: "Well, we had our doubts as the credulity of his story..."
Gavin: "But he seemed to be quite convinced... It was rather compelling."
Andrizztyl: "Right, and I decided that it just could not wait another moment..."
Minsc: "But Boo and Minsc had no doubts at all!"
Imoen: "Well, good for them!"
Rabbit: "Let me out! I want to meet her."
Dynaheir: "'Twas many a week I have been held captive here. I am grateful for thy assistance."
Minsc: "And Minsc was even killed just down those stairs by-"
Andrizztyl: *ahem-ahem* "It was nothing really. We pretty much just hurried here and made short work of these dog-heads."
Imoen: "Excuse me?!"
Andrizztyl: "Mm? What? Oh, yes, had some trouble finding the place. Xvart village and all. Don't worry- finished them all off in a snap."
Kivan: "We should have just left them alone too..."
Imoen: "So killing *me* was 'nothing' then?"
Andrizztyl: *hushed tones* "Imoen..."
Imoen: "Don't you shush me, you murderer!"
Andrizztyl: "Do we have to go over this again? I was Confused."
Dynaheir: "Thou art often confused as such?"
Kivan: "Yes..."
Gavin: "It does happen at times."
Andrizztyl: "No, no, the spell, I mean. Confused..."
Imoen: "Andrizztyl killed me! And I didn't do anything to provoke his wild bull temprament."
Dynaheir: "Wild bull..."
Andrizztyl: "They're blowing everything out of proportions really. It was all a misunderstanding."
Rabbit: "Oh, now you *gotta* let me out!"
Gavin: "To be fair. I think he's only attacked Imoen though, no one else."
Imoen: "With that nasty sword of his..."
Kivan: "And some innocent bards on the way here... and some carnival attendants as well apparently..."
Andrizztyl: "Great... thanks, Kivan. I got your back too."
Imoen: "You better not, backstabber."
Kivan: "I will rest more cautiously then..."
Andrizztyl: "No- I didn't mean 'got your back' like that..."
Minsc: "You will harm no more of us!"
Rabbit: "Hey, woh, let me out of the backpack if you're gonna beat him up!"
Dynaheir: "And who is this small voice that eminates from thy backpack... Andrizztyl, is it?"
Rabbit: "Someone who wants out!"
Andrizztyl: "Yes, Andrizztyl's the name- not Drizzt, of course- people get us mixed up..."
Dynaheir: "I'm sure they do... But about the voice?"
Rabbit: "Yes, about me!"
Andrizztyl: "Just my familiar. Tryng to keep him safe in there... you know. Gets restless sometimes."
Dynaheir: "So thou art practised as a mage...
Andrizztyl: "Well, somewhat... I..."
Dynaheir: "For you do not appear as one..."
Andrizztyl: "Well, you know..."
Rabbit: "He does keep failing his castings inexplicably, now that you mention it..."
Andrizztyl: *elbows his back* "Doesn't know what he's saying. Don't pay attention to him..."
Rabbit: "Missed..."
Kivan: "No one has even asked it if it's a him..."
Dynaheir: "And what familiar hast answered thy call?"
Imoen: "A rabbit!"
Andrizztyl: *ahem* "Rabbit?! So ridiculous. Rabbit- sheesh. I'm a tad more capable a mage than to have a simple rabbit for a familiar. Why would you say such a thing...? These people sometimes..."
Gavin: "Uh... Andrizztyl?"
Rabbit: "Then what am I?"
Andrizztyl: "'What are you?' he asks? Very cute..."
Rabbit: "Well... tell the lady..."
Andrizztyl: "Still insisting, I see... ok... Ha... but of course. He's a dragon. My dragon familiar. You know. I have a dragon... you know, as *my* familiar."
Dragon: "It's about time you recognized that!"
Kivan: *groans*
Gavin: "That's... not exactly..."
Minsc: "Not what it looked like to me... but maybe Minsc was wrong. I will ask Boo."
Andrizztyl: "It's a dragon." *turns to the others* "Come on, guys, dragon, right?"
Boo: *squeak*
Imoen: "Just to impress this lady?"
Minsc: "Boo says he is not so sure now. Maybe a rabbit-like dragon."
Andrizztyl: "Nooo, *not* just to impress some lady standing in a pit."
Minsc: "Quite furry..."
Dragon: "Well, a dragon *should* impress some lady standing in a pit."
Minsc: "With ears..."
Dynaheir: "Well, this lady standing in a pit is exhausted from all this waiting about, having subsisted on insects and unmentionable meats from gnolls for nearly a month..."
Gavin: "Of course, my lady. Shall we help you out of there?"
Andrizztyl: "Uh..."
Dragon: "Take her hand or something..."
Minsc: "Minsc will help you out!" *bounds to the pit's log steps to carry her up*
Dynaheir: "Thy assistance is unnecessary..."
Andrizztyl: "Yeah, see, she can... manage..."
Dragon: *tsk-tsk*
Dynaheir: "I simply wish to be gone from this place, never to return unless it is restored to whatever glory it once held in years past when these pits were used for something more appropriate."
Gavin: "It does seem quite the fortress, doesn't it?"
Andrizztyl: *looks around at the location for the first time, having been focusing on shadows and exploding gnolls* "Yes, I've been thinking all along that this place is quite... uh... large..."
Minsc: "We will leave this stinking, evil-infested place at once!"
Imoen: "Sounds good to me. This place gives me some terrible memories." *kicks Andrizztl*
Andrizztyl: *winces* "When are you going to just forgive me...?"
Kivan: "We can leave whenever our 'guide' is ready..."
Imoen: "Don't know. Maybe never... killer..."
Dragon: "Oh, Andrizztyl is always ready!"
Andrizztyl: "Since when did you become a cheerleader, there, 'dragonblood?'"
Dragon: "Mmm, just a mood... Dragons like me get that way..."

But they did not leave right away, for their charismatic leader wanted to hack through xvarts first in order to retrieve the rest of the items left in the container in the cave. And once there they rested a full 8 hours further in that dirty, dank, xvart-stinking cave at the foot of the gnoll stronghold. And items were tossed around for carrying and the new member of the group was given spells, AC8 bracers, a mage robe, and the recently-acquired dagger of Isolde. They had found not one, not two, but fully three scrolls of Fireball- conveniently so (much too conveniently so) on one of the assassins that had accosted them when crossing the bridge, but Andrizztyl had failed to memorize one and committed another. Alas, as Tymora would have it, the invoker failed to memorize the third scroll... and now has two empty Level 3 spellslots while Andrizztyl- who now has it in his spellbook- cannot cast 3rd level spells at all... And then they battled more xvarts and Andrizztyl found a carrion crawler in the adjacent cave which was somehow trapped by a bat and thus that much less dangerous to pick off with arrows. And then they hacked through yet more and gnolls to attain the bridge... And then... they left the gnoll stronghold...

Having discovered after handing out the stronghold plunder to carriers that most of their packs were still fairly empty, Andrizztyl decided not to go directly back to the Nashkell carnival but to stop off in the area west of the mines first. Who knows- maybe even pick up a set of +2 studded leather armor in the process? Could happen... On arriving in a sunny field, however, Kivan suddenly started divulging personal information to Andrizztyl, concluding with this curious statement...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: *glances at Dynaheir to see if she's listening* "Uh, yes, well, the source of my power to judge people is, uh, thinking about what they're saying and, uh, just judging it, I guess."
Gavin: "That's... some power."
Imoen: "Yeah, how powerful. Almost as powerful as that sword..."
Kivan: "This is not something you can understand with your head..."
Minsc: "As powerful as my axe?"
Kivan: "You seem to intuit your way to your judgments..."
Minsc: "Minsc has a nice axe now..."
Kivan: "As if seeing into their souls..."
Imoen: "Who? The Bufflehead?"
Gavin: "I believe that's who he's referring to..."
Minsc: "This axe will now cut evil down to size!"
Kivan: "Perhaps you do not even understand your own power."
Minsc: "Or at least sizes small enough for a halfling to cut down to size..."
Andrizztyl: "Uh... yeah, I don't understand it fully myself, no."
Kivan: "But you wield it nonetheless..."
Dynaheir: "'Tis some revelation thou hast pronounced for Andrizztyl, 'tis not?"
Andrizztyl: "Well, we've been together a while, you know..."
Gavin: "About a week, I'd say. If that."
Kivan: "It is a sense I have about him... That is all."
Andrizztyl: "I get people. You know."
Imoen: "Yeah, especially people close to you..."
Andrizztyl: "Naturally."
Imoen: "You get 'em With your sword..."
Andrizztyl: "Wait- that's not-"
Kivan: "Perhaps we should move on now..."
Minsc: "Moving on to stomp the heads of those who would stop us from stomping the heads of those whose heads should be stomped!"
Dynaheir: "Minsc..."
Gavin: "Something like that..."
Kivan: "... before I regret having mentioned it..."

And move on they did. Now every member of the six was fully equipped with overpowered weapons... Andrizztyl with his +3 you-know-what, Minsc with a +2 axe from a stronghold assassin, Imoen with a +2 halberd from a stronghold leader and a +1 light crossbow from another stronghold assassin, Gavin with a +2 hammer filched from an FAI dwarf, and now Dynaheir with the +3 returning dagger of Isolde. Only Kivan still had just his plain composite longbow and the smithy's +1 bastard sword, but now there were exploding and fire arrows for him. Skeletons were more of a minor nuisance, a pair of thugs went down quite easily, one to an Andrizztyl backstab that simply made the drow's ranged fire better. Not even Larry, Darryl, and Darryl could escape those throwing daggers.

When they came to a group of three Amnish adventurer types (you could just smell the Amnish on them) who seemed of bullish temperament, more delicacy was required... So Andrizztyl sent Minsc... but only after luring the group's warrior woman far away from the other two who were archers. She rightly identified Minsc, of course, but assumed the rest of the party was his class for some reason...

Image IPB
Dynaheir: "This is what we shall get when we permit a berserker speak on our behalf..."
Minsc: "Did I say something wrong?"
Gavin: "Not so much 'wrong' as counterproductive perhaps..."
Andrizztyl: "Don't worry about it, Minsc. You did your best and said just what the occasion called for..."

And Kirian too went by way of an Andrizztyl backstab. In greedy excitement, the drow pawed at her belongings to find... splint mail... not the magic leather he was anticipating... Plain splint mail. Well, perhaps the archers might have it, no? Kivan can only wear leather as well, so... off they went, and while Gavin's skeletons did their best to rush the archers, one archer went down to an Andrizztyl backstab... And in a short 2-3 rounds it became clear: there was no magical leather to find...

So they left. Well... first they played fetch for a boy who grew to be less of a man than a hells-hopping ogre mage, to which Gavin responded...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: "You think?... Huh... maybe not..."
Dragon: *snickers*
Imoen: "Hey, quit teasing...

Then they left. And after depositing their treasures at the carnival, they took stock of their situation.

Andrizztyl: "Well, Minsc, I've fulfilled my side of the bargain, right?"
Minsc: "You mean rescuing Dynaheir?"
Andrizztyl: "I mean just that."
Dynaheir: "Did thee make these people some promise, Minsc?"
Minsc: "And I will ful*fill* my promise!"
Andrizztyl: "Ah... good to hear it."
Imoen: "What promise?"
Minsc: "Uh... I don't remember. Ask Boo."
Andrizztyl: "Revenge."
Gavin: "Uh oh."
Kivan: "This sounds interesting... Revenge for what?"
Andrizztyl: "Revenge for what happened to Imoen."
Dynaheir: "The petrification thou mentioned?"
Gavin: "Ah."
Andrizztyl: "That very thing."
Imoen: "But I'm all better now. You saved me."
Andrizztyl: "Something you should remember next time you're about to kick me."
Imoen: "We'll see..."
Dynaheir: "What revenge canst thou have against animals as thoughtless as bassilisks?"
Minsc: "Yes, that's it! We must kick the butt of the lurking Bassilisk!"
Imoen: "You still murdered me. It hurt my feelings..."
Minsc: "Bassilisk will *not* be able to do his evil lurkings again!"
Dynaheir: "Mayhaps I am confused now."
Kivan: "Join the club..."
Minsc: "And I will *help* you in your revenge on him!"
Gavin: "Minsc is speaking... or shouting... about the psychopath Bassilus. The High Mornmaster who I serve under tasked us with the dangerous mission of hunting him down and stopping him."
Minsc: "Then we will hunt him!"
Dynaheir: "And this Bassilus knoweth the spell Flesh-to-Stone? This ist no easy quarry to arresteth."
Gavin: "I don't believe he knows that spell... He's a cleric, I think..."
Andrizztyl: "Well, he petrified Imoen. Besides, don't they sell Stone-to-Flesh scrolls at your temple?"
Imoen: "Wait. No, he didn't."
Andrizztyl: "OK: his pet bassilisks did."
Imoen: "Besides, I don't hold no grudge."
Dynaheir: "Ist thee certain of Bassilus' involvement?"
Andrizztyl: "I ist. Witnessed it with my own two eyes... You can't imagine the horror..."
Imoen: "Well, I didn't see anyone... other than xvarts..."
Gavin: "You witnessed Bassilus himself at that time?"
Andrizztyl: "Uh... yeah."
Gavin: "Why didn't you mention that when Mornmaster tried to speak with us of the matter?"
Andrizztyl: "Well... he was being pissy."
Gavin: "There was no beastmaster of that sort when you and I and Minsc encountered one."
Andrizztyl: "He must have just left it there? Pets escape sometimes."
Dragon: "If only more often..."
Dynaheir: "So this mayhaps is how Bassilus got his name."
Andrizztyl: "Yes... yes, exactly."
Dragon: "Real clever one, there, drow."
Andrizztyl: "Thanks..."
Dragon: "Now I *am* gonna get petrified in your backpack."
Gavin: "If this is true, the High Mornmaster will wish to know of it."
Andrizztyl: "Naw, I've got the spells now, 'dragonblood.' You'll see."
Dragon: "No, I won't see... That's what bothers me..."
Dynaheir: "It would be my honor to accompany thee. Such a danger should not be walking this land uncontested. Now I see why you had me memorize the protection spell."
Minsc: "And Minsc will be proud to walk by your side into this danger..."
Dragon: "I didn't see Imoen getting turned to stone either..."
Andrizztyl: "The only trouble is where to find these bassilisks."
Minsc: "... so long as his feet are not made of stone..."
Dragon: "Doesn't mean it didn't happen all the same..."
Dynaheir: "Thee means Bassilus, no?"
Minsc: "... though stone feet are all the better for butt-kicking evil monsters!"
Andrizztyl: "Yes, right- same thing... and we've already searched the area west of the Nashkell mines where Imoen got taken out."
Imoen: "No, that was further west, Murderous Bufflehead."
Minsc: "And Boo will be proud to bite their eyes out..."
Gavin: "I know there are bassilisks somewhere near the Morninglord Temple. There is a statue to the west, so I was told, though I never investigated. High Mornmaster Keldath will know more about bassilisks than I."
Kivan: "So we're going back there again?"
Andrizztyl: "Unfortunately..."

The Andrizztyl Saga, Day 32: "Underwhelming Overpowering" or "Coming Full Circle," Part 2
And they headed back north again to the Beregost temple where they were greeted by the usual warmth that Mornmaster Keldath Ormlyr has for visitors...

Image IPB
Gavin: "Greetings again, sir."
Keldath: "Yes, welcome back, Gavin. How have you been faring?"
Gavin: "Quite well, sir. We did rescue the lady Minsc was speaking of... as you can see."
Keldath: *nods* "And... about Bassilus..."
Gavin: "Yes, there is important news about Bassilus, sir. Andrizztyl says he saw him with bassilisks."
Keldath: *skeptically looks Andrizztyl over a while*
Andrizztyl: "Well, I did. That's that. He's going around petrifying people... with his pet bassilisks."
Imoen: "I'm the one who got petrified."
Andrizztyl: "See?"
Imoen: "But I didn't see anyone other than xvarts."
Keldath: "From my accounts, Bassilus is a cleric of some power, perhaps insane, and a former ranking member of the Zhentarim... not a master of bassilisks."
Andrizztyl: "Well, those accounts are wrong. Besides, where did he get that name?"
Keldath: "His mother?"
Dragon: *chuckles*
Andrizztyl: "Just tell us where the bassilisks are. Gavin says you know something."
Keldath: *looks to Gavin*
Gavin: "Remember- about the statue out past the temple?"
Keldath: *looks woeful and says unto them all* "There are bassilisks much further east of here, and if you decide to go there, be aware that your lives are needlessly in peril. You should reconsid-"
Andrizztyl: "East?"
Keldath: "Yes... nearly a day's walk through the hills of-"
Andrizztyl: "No... no, no, no. We came across them west of Beregost, not east. And also fairly far south."
Keldath: "The ones I know of are to the east."
Andrizztyl: "You're sure?"
Keldath: "As sure as I am that you should be hunting Bassilus somewhere out west instead."
Andrizztyl: "Then we go east... But you better be right..."
Keldath: "Remember... if you don't find Bassilus' holy symbol... that's not him..."
Gavin: "We'll be sure to look for it, sir!"
Andrizztyl: *winces* "Great... thanks for the help..."
Keldath: "I only wish to ensure that madman is stopped..."
Andrizztyl: "And I only wish to turn in a wyvern head, but things are more complicated, aren't they?"

And after buying a few Stone-to-Flesh scrolls from the priest, they headed east... and arrived into a group of gnoll slashers [in the north]. Scouting for only a moment Andrizztyl had already found more bassilisks... Yep, this was the place... but there was also a gnome with them, some sort of mage. Was there actually a Bassilus herding them after all? Did he know Flesh-to-Stone? Andrizztyl returned to the group, and he and Dynaheir got Kivan, Minsc, and himself readied with Protection from Petrification spells while the rest of the party moved to what they estimated to be a safe distance...

Andrizztyl then decided that- with the power of his backstabs- he should be able to take out one of those bassilisks fairly easy... Incorrect... and as he jabbed, the gnome immediately declared his intention to add a drow to the surrounding statuary...

Image IPB

Fortunately the gnome only got one spell off against him as he fled north... Unfortunately it was "Dispel Magic" and canceled his Protection from Petrification... Fortunately, however, (and all's fortunate that ends fortunate) Andrizztyl had a potion of Mirror Eyes on him (and also another PfP spell memorized) which he drank... and- after sneaking back- the wizard was... *ahem* Held... by an Andrizztyl backstab... With the mage out of the picture, Minsc and Kivan joined and they started on a sweeping rampage against all the bassilisks they could find. Andrizztyl had used his other spell to supplement the dwindling potion effects. They were still glowing when they started encountering more gnolls and then tasloi which chased them back north to the rest of the party... (This is just a nice battle scene, particularly with Dynaheir's cloak going way up in the air...)

It was then that they happened upon a petrified woman who might just respond to the Stone-to-Flesh scroll. There were plenty of other statues, of course... but... just that one... Once cast, the woman immediately drank what appeared to be a greater healing potion. Andrizztyl wondered if she had any more, so as they spoke to her to reassure her that everything was going to be ok, Imoen pickpocketed her...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: "Wait, don't go just yet. We just wanted to say how happy we are to have rescued you..."
Tamah: "Really... again, I'll tell everyone how selfless you were to have wasted a scroll on me for absolutely nothing in return." *turning to go*
Andrizztyl: "Uh... but it's not nothing! We feel it deep inside whenever we do good things for people."
rest of party: *looking at Andrizztyl puzzled*
Tamah: "And I thank you, but I'm so weak right now... let me just return to Beregost to tell everyone..."
Andrizztyl: "Wait! Before you go, uh... so what's your favorite color?"
Tamah: "My...?"
Dynaheir: "Why do thee not let the woman just-?"
Andrizztyl: "Favorite food?"
Gavin: "Andrizztyl..."
Tamah: "I'm not sure I-"
Dragon: "Come here often?"
Andrizztyl: "But again... really... we're very pleased to see you're doing well now after you were in such a-"
Imoen: *gives disappointed 'all-done' signal*
Andrizztyl: "Right! Off you go... Shoo..."
Tamah: "Um... thanks?" *departs*

Then they came across another adventuring party. Unlike the Amnish group there were four... and they were standing in the middle of a bassilisk hunting ground... Once again Andrizztyl sought tact foremost... and sent Minsc to chat with them... Needless to say things got messy, but like other battles, after much planning and preparation, and quite the supply of worry, it went far too easily. After Minsc angered them (and visa versa) the skeletons that Gavin had sent in as impartial intermediaries decided to attack the "sad" group of four and were the first targeted. Thus when the trash-talking mage received an Andrizztyl backstab, Andrizztyl could then flee to the safety of the open-air stalactite (stalagmite?) to the south to hide without being targeted. Gavin Held the archer of the group as he tried to flee to a safer firing distance, and the rest simply fired on the cleric to disrupt every spell while the Minsc tank led their tank around in circles, and then they finished off that tank. Then they all fired on the archer, and just as he went down, the leader woman came out of Andrizztyl's Hold. The 6-archer firing squad that followed was quite enough...

While collecting all the valuables in the area and finding no holy symbol it became clear to everyone that Andrizztyl had led them on a wild bassilisk chase, and after they spent several minutes of cursing him for his manipulativeness, Andrizztyl finally agreed to hunt down Bassilus in earnest... after they returned to the carnival stashpoint for some long-anticipated cashing in of their prizes, that is. This was to everyone's liking, particularly Dynaheir who was promised 3rd level spells to cast. When they reached only a few minutes north of the carnival, it was to an interesting entourage...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: "I thought you left Gazib in the tent!"
Imoen: "I did! He was stuck in the table!"
Andrizztyl: "Then how do you explain these ogres??"
Imoen: "They're not exploding! It couldn't have been him!"
Kivan: "I told you there was more they weren't sharing with us..."

After completing the drop-off, Kivan- who had no creature obstructing his inventory- did most of the carrying of items to various nearby merchants... the ones who would still speak with them anyway... And after a lot of busywork they ended up 20Kgp richer. They still had all the jewelry and gems to cash in, but no one listened to the concerns of Gavin, Imoen, and Dynaheir- who were carrying most of it- so they set off with all that extra inventory for no reason [*slaps forehead*] On their journey they had a flashback of sorts to an encounter they'd fled some days prior, but this time they did decide to fight...

And there they were... just where they'd been when the world had once suddenly became a lot smaller... another land full of nuisances... But fortunately Andrizztyl had brought along a potion he'd snatched off the carcass of one of the bassilisk adventurers... Within moments they came upon a familiar set of skeleton-ridden ruins that caused deja vu in all but Minsc and Dynaheir, but some hesitation in all of them...

Image IPB
Andrizztyl: "True, true... And you say your 'mornmaster' wants us to persuade him out of his insanity...?"
Gavin: "Yes. He told me that the best thing would be to at least *try* to persuade him. Perhaps he really can still be reasoned with enough to be saved. Insanity is not necessarily evil, and it may not be too late for him yet..."
Andrizztyl: "Hm... so diplomacy, eh?... Right! Minsc?"
Minsc: "Ready for butt-kicking!"

And Minsc was not so persuasive. Once Bassilus was angered, Andrizztyl hurled the bassilisk adventurer's bottle bomb into the ruins... Couldn't exactly ruin the ruins... especially since it was ridding them of skeletons...

Ranged fire ended Bassilus' insanity spree, and they looted the place. Given the general inventory lockup, however, things became a bit tricky, and everyone started donning all the jewelry and swapping things... and hours later they were able to proceed further into the area... again sweeping aside most anything they met. Several hobgoblin elite archers plus a group of similarly poison-arrow equipped hobgoblins were a minor challenge that skeletons and Stinking Cloud resolved well enough. And of course there was a chance to give a cave bear the ever-popular Andrizztyl backstab. At one point they encountered a familiar chicken, of course, who simply needed to go to Thalantyr. What a coincidence, that was where the group were headed with all this loot... and once they had their packs stuffed full to the very last possible slot, they paused to look at the otherwise now-accessible world before them...

Dynaheir: "This band hath done quite well for itself, hath it not?"
Andrizztyl: *nodding in assent* "Quite better lately than might've been anticipated by previous experience..."
Melicamp: *cluck* "Does your band have a *cluck* name?"
Imoen: "Hey, that's right! We don't have a name since Dyna came aboard."
Dynaheir: "That ist *Dynaheir* to thee, but if the multiple syllabes are too much for thee, I understandeth..."
Imoen: *sticks out tongue*
Gavin: "I am very grateful that you have not let me down regarding my duties to the High-"
Andrizztyl: "His Highness?"
Gavin: "Erm... as you prefer... but I think I am decided to stay with you for the duration on this journey to find the murderer of your foster father, Andrizztyl."
Andrizztyl: "Think so?"
Gavin: "Yes... and so my contribution to choosing a name would be 'Morning Force' for our group-"
Andrizztyl: *decisively* "No."
Gavin: "Well, I had to try..."
Minsc: "We are the Evil-Smiters!"
Andrizztyl: "Uh... no."
Dragon: "This could be a tricky process..."
Minsc: "The Butt-kickers?"
Dynaheir: "Thou werest the Quintro before I, yes? Then perhaps the Sextro?"
Imoen: "Oooh..."
Andrizztyl: "No..."
Gavin: "Could give the wrong impression..."
Dragon: "Dragonbloods..."
Andrizztyl: "No..."
Dragon: "Why not?"
Dynaheir: "What is this I keep hearing of the blood of dragons?"
Dragon: "It's in my veins... 'bout it."
Dynaheir: "Well, I would certainly hope so..."
Imoen: "So would Andrizztyl..."
Minsc: "The Evil-Smiting Butt-Kickers!"
Gavin: "Perhaps that's a bit too descriptive, Minsc. Try something that has more to do with our character than with our actions."
Minsc: "Minsc will consult Boo for this."
Imoen: "What do you think, Kivan?"
Kivan: "We are the Ought-to-Get-Goings..."
Minsc: "No, this is too descriptive too..."
Kivan: *sighs* "Yes... thank you, Minsc."
Minsc: "You need not mention it..."
Dynaheir: "Perhaps the Mighty Rescuers..."
Gavin: "Mighty, eh?"
Dynaheir: "Wouldst thou prefer the Mediocre Rescuers?"
Gavin: "You have a point..."
Andrizztyl: "Neither..."
Imoen: "Some rescuer Andrizztyl is. Should be the Rescue-and-Stabbers."
Minsc: "The World Forgers!"
Andrizztyl: "Not *too* bad... but no."
Gavin: "How so 'forgers,' Minsc?"
Minsc: "We beat and smash the world into goodness."
Dynaheir: "Not a sufficiently comprehensive motto for this band, Minsc... but thy heart ist in the right place."
Imoen: "We should be called the Bunch o' Buffleheads if we can't decide."
Andrizztyl: "Nnnnno."
Gavin: "Well, we haven't heard a suggestion from you, Andrizztyl."
Andrizztyl: "Uh... I'm serving as arbiter."
Imoen: "More like executioner. Say 'yes' for once."
Andrizztyl: "Yes... I will... once there is a name worth having."
Boo: *squeak*
all: *turn to Minsc*
Minsc: "Mmm. I see..." *turns to party* "The Packers of Punches."
Andrizztyl: *clearly disappointed* "No."
Imoen: "Is that what Boo suggested?"
Minsc: "No, Boo told me he was still thinking, so I said that one."
Gavin: "Ah."
Boo: *squeak*
Minsc: *listens, then...* "The Human-Elf-Rodent Group."
Dragon: "And dragon!"
Andrizztyl: "What the-?... No."
Minsc: "But a rabbit is a rodent, you said."
Dragon: "He was speaking hypothetically."
Dynaheir: "Why wouldst Boo leave out Dragon from the name, Minsc?"
Minsc: "Boo says he is sorry if he offended and offers instead the Dragonteeth..."
Andrizztyl: "N-... hmph..."
Kivan: "Like the sword of your teacher...
Minsc: "... who was a gnome, not a human or elf or rodent..."
Dragon: "Or dragon!"
Melicamp: "Or chicken..."
Kivan: "This name has purpose, Minsc, and has lifted my spirits somewhat..."
Andrizztyl: "A little on the flashy side..."
Dynaheir: "It has promise, and even seems to suit your familiar, Andrizztyl. In fact, it is your familiar that makes it such a perfect name."
Dragon: "It certainly does!"
Andrizztyl: "Uh... yeah, kind of..."
Kivan: "A great ranger's sword, wielded in defense of a realm..."
Imoen: "Kivan likes it."
Andrizztyl: "Apparently..."
Melicamp: "Well, the thought of gnashing dragon teeth simply scares me."
Andrizztyl: "Does it...? And what would Keldath think of that name, Gavin?"
Gavin: "I'm afraid he might not like the violent overtones."
Andrizztyl: "Done. It's Dragonteeth... at least provisionally."

And with that the Provisional Dragonteeth set off to see Thalantyr...

@Gate70 - Yes, this is my first no-reload run, but I have played BG/BG2 many times trying many different strategies.  My success so far has not involved much combat, and I fully took advantage of NPCs starting at higher levels if I have them join later on.  Hopefully Vardamir's success will last as I go through more tricky situations!

-----------------

The newly formed group of 3 visited the Nashkel carnival, and ran into problems with a mage.  Monty went all the
way down to 1hp before finally taking care of business.  Then, after a trip back to the temple for healing and a cheaper stone-to-flesh scroll, the group upped their numbers to 4.  The experienced Branwen (Level 5) told of how the terrible Tranzig turned her to stone.

Anyway, the group proceeded to the mines and took care of business there too.  Everyone was sure that the adventurers were throwing their lives away, but in the end they were proven wrong!  Montaron was ideal for the endeavor.  His scouting made the kobold ambushes simpler, and he managed to detect and disarm traps at only 10 skill points!

Image IPB

The battle with Mulahey was much easier, with no Mirror Image to deal with (and Hold Person worked this time).

Image IPB

There was some nice loot to have including a holy ring, boots, and a +1 short sword for Montaron.  Vardamir and company saved the depressing Xan (only joined up for the trip back to town) and returned to collect their reward.  After receiving high praise from the mayor, the whole party chimed in.  Branwen was proud, but Xzar and Montaron were not happy with the goody-goodyness of whole thing.  But before Vardamir could spend the gold on drinks and a nice room, Montaron discovered another surprise.  Nimbul was dispatched with help from some skeletons, and they all left Nashkel behind.  Some half-ogres were blasted by Xzar's magic and quickly finished off on the road to Beregost.

Back at Fieldpost's, the party had a party.  Many rounds of drinks were consumed, and they all retired to very nice accommodations.  With good feelings all around, and Branwen excited about returning the favor to Tranzig, Vardamir found himself wondering if he had a crush...

The party rested and prepared for battle.  A quick fight with Tranzig produced the needed information about the likely location of Tazok and the bandits, and revenge was satisfied.  More encounters in Beregost:  a creepy old wizard, a stranded Flaming First officer, a paladin who needed help with half-ogres, and the "two-headed" Karlat.  This time around Karlat was easily handled, twice:

Image IPB

Vardamir then led his crew to the Friendly Arm Inn where they made a few purchases and met a gnome named Landrin, formerly of Beregost.  From there they headed into the woods to find the bandit hideout.  Instead, they meet and joined with a drow, who they saved from a Flaming Fist mercenary.  Now the party has 3 clerics out of 5!
