Sicher, dwarf swashbuckler (Introduction)

I thought about doing something different, but decided in the end that I still had unfinished business with a swashbuckler.

Unlike Viell and Absol, Sicher will have to contend with the game set on Insane (rather than Core).  That shouldn't make any difference in BG1 as he will also be trying to complete the game without getting injured.  However, it will mean he will require a bit more care if he makes it through to Amn.

Sicher, dwarven swashbuckler (Chapter 1)

With Sicher I'm back to my normal behaviour of not allowing NPCs to be recruited - that was bad news for Xzar & Montaron!

Marl, Firebead and some spiders got him to level 3 in Beregost.  He also stole the potion of invisibility from the Manor House there and killed Algernon.

The area to the south yielded a letter for Mirianne and some boots of stealth for himself before Sicher went to the coast for an appointment with Shoal (level 4).  Back in Beregost he ran round the town shooting Karlat before returning Perdue's sword (level 5).

@Wise: I guess I missed your initial post - what is your character class? Sorcerer? I noticed in your 4 man party you have a thief, cleric, and tank, so assumed you were an arcane of some kind.

It is indeed. Gnomish Fighter/Illusionist with one of the best rolls ever. Without Frabjous re=roller too. Vanilla + DSoSC.

Cleared the mines with no problems whatsoever. It was tempting to mine for experience down there as the Hobgoblins keep coming back. However, resisted the temptation. :D

Now about to enter the Iron Throne at Scars behest, Will do it by stealth and come back later.

I missed making a screenshot of yet another wyvern ambush. They really help with both experience and gold even if it means raising a party member as it doesn't take 2000 gold pieces to raise someone.

Sicher, dwarven swashbuckler (Chapter 2)

Down to Nashkel to talk to Noober and steal another potion of invisibility from the Manor House.  At the carnival he shot Oopah and Vitiare and acquired a further potion of invisibility - along with a necklace of missiles and scroll of protection from petrification.  He also rested to get LMD.

Got a 4th potion of invisibility at the valley of the tombs (though stealth failed there and had to give up the dagger to the revenant).  Also pulled the ghasts out of their tomb and shot them up.

On the way to Beregost temple saved Arabelle from some xvarts.  At the temple bought a stone to flesh scroll before moving on to the basilisk area, though a kobold archer ambush on the way made Sicher use the first of his invisibility potions.  The basilisks to the south got him to level 6.  Sicher shot the separated ones to the north and released Tamah, before recruiting Korax to paralyse Mutamin while Sicher stayed in the shadows.  Killing his pets got him to level 7.  Korax failed to make much impression on Kirian's party, but 3 fireballs from the shadows killed the three with distance attacks and a few stealth shots finished off Lindin as well - his invisibility potion got Sicher's stock back up to 4.

After selling equipment Sicher was travelling to Firewine Bridge when ambushed.  Initially there only seemed to be gnolls and Sicher was just running from them when some skeletons belatedly appeared as well and got a shot at him - fortunately it missed.  At Firewine, Sicher separated Meilum from his bracers, but (like Absol) failed to pickpocket Bentan.

He's just safely arrived at the Nashkel mines.

There are a couple of names there that I don't recognise, Vitare and Bentan. Is Bentan the bard at Firewine?

Never thought of pick-pocketting Melium.

Even if you want to fight him, it makes sense to get his bracers first.

Sicher, dwarven swashbuckler (Chapter 3)

Sicher stealthed through the mines without any trouble.  In the cave he stealth-shot the 4 kobolds and then Mulahey.  Back in Nashkel he returned a ring to Joseph's wife and owned up to Oublek that he couldn't be Greywolf because he'd killed the bounty hunter just before going into the mines.  After picking up a reward from Berrun Ghastkill, he shot Nimbul before he could talk.

Tranzig was shot from the shadows of the stairs (without actually needing to use them), opening a route to the bandit camp.  On the way there Sicher took a belt from an ogre and found Joia's ring (though he didn't hand it over then).  I almost absent-mindedly ran him into Tarnesh, but remembered just in time and shot him from a distance as well.

At the bandit camp I got a bit bored and tried something new - seeing if Sicher could hide again in the main tent after the people there went hostile from a fireball.  They congregated on all sides of the central flagpole so there was nowhere to hide.  Rather than take the time to leave stealthed and kill all the bandits outside, I tried a second fireball - but that didn't quite kill any of them.  Sicher was thus exposed on exit and his belt and boots weren't sufficient to protect him from a bandit arrow

He finished off the bandits easily enough after that, though Taugosz had to be run round for quite a while before filling him with arrows.

Bentan is the cleric on the eastern edge of the map - he has a scroll of protection from magic.  Vitiare is the thief who tries to pickpocket you in the eastern carnival tent.

Is that the cleric of Ilmater 't who tries to convert you?

I never go in the carnival tents which explains why I didn't know about Vitiare.

Sicher, dwarven swashbuckler (Final update)

I think perhaps another swashbuckler wasn't the right thing to do - Sicher perished in the Cloakwood mine.  He had killed Daveorn and was trying to kill the mustard jelly guarding the treasure by stealth attacks and running round corners.  The jelly was at near death, but eventually retaliated extremely quickly to an attack.  Sicher had about 35 HPs (maximum 41, but he had not fully healed after being hit by a throwing axe from Genthore) and that's well within range of an Insane critical.

Corey_Russell/Dogdancing Multi-player No-Reload, Attempt 5, Update 13 - FINAL BG 1 Update
Coretrue, level 8 Paladin, 84 HP, controlled by CR
Wewa, level 10 thief, 49 HP, controlled by Dogdancing

The duo defeated the Iron Throne by using a two-pronged attack. Coretrue got Gardush and gang's attention, protected by protection from magic scroll - Wewa would attack from the other stairs using acid arrows on melees/ranged and biting arrows on casters - this strategy was very effective.

The duo only cleared the first area of Candlekeep crypts, they then skipped the rest of it via invis potions. Wewa got the WIS tome for lore and Coretrue the strength tome.

In the City of Baldur's Gate, the duo kept to the sewers only to avoid being arrested. First stop was Cythandria - Coretrue had massive buffs, and defeated the ogres and Cythandria on his own - Wewa got confused and was out of action. It should be noted that throughout this run Wewa has had trouble attacking - that is she would click to attack but nothing would happen - for some reason many times she needed to force attack to get her attacks going.

Next up was Slythe and Krystin - MUCH smoother this go around and Slythe got dispelled and Krystin wasn't much trouble for the same reason.

Duchal palace fight was extremely simple strategy, but ended up being wildly successful (saved both Dukes!) - haste potions on the duo, and used their bows and acid arrows, attacking the same target and for the only time in the game, auto-pause on target gone to insure no wasted actions. Close coordination of the duo, with Corey_Russell only unpausing once he was certain the duo were hitting the same dopplegangers - this was where we got stopped last time so was nice to get it this time.

We skipped the thieve's maze entirely via invis potions once more, Wewa de-trapped along the way. The invis potions were still active and we walked past the Iron Throne Undercity party and rested by the Throne of Bhaal - time for the main event!

Here is our preparation:
Posted Image

Plan? Coretrue moved to the left, pulled Sarevok and Semaj via Necklace of missiles, used arrows of dispelling to get rid of Sarevok's buffs. Coretrue then swung his Spider's Bane at Sarevok while Wewa pumped Sarevok with acid arrows - this was VERY fast - Semaj got a greater malison off, then Sarevok was dead!
Posted Image

The duo will move on to BG 2 next session. Coretrue will kit to Inquisitor, Wewa hasn't decided if she will kit and if so to what, though she is leaning toward bounty hunter.

Well done Corey. hard luck Grond0.

Grond0. I am a bit confused about what you have written.

It's as if you have met Genthore again at the bottom of the mines. Is this part of a mod?

No mod.  It's just that Sicher got hit by a throwing axe from Genthore (for something like 18 HPs) when defeating the party at the entrance to the mine.  He used a Bhaal healing ability and a LMD, but wasn't using potions and didn't rest - hence he was still not at full HPs after he had killed Daveorn.

Wrecking Crew III (Update 1)

I thought I would have another go at a party of dwarf fighters. In a bit of a change though this party is running on my modded SCS setup rather than basic BGT.

Posted Image

The Crew have made quite a bit of progress. They've done the majority of the encounter areas prior to the Cloakwood (except TotSC areas) and have just finished the bandit camp.

Given their dwarven heritage I feel the crew shouldn't really be relying on artificial aids, so they are only making use of passive magic items, i.e. those that have an effect when equipped (such as armour, weapons and bracers). That means no things like fireballs and no healing potions or antidotes - that has had unfortunate results for individual characters on several occasions (as suggested by the stats below).

The only near thing for Boss (the PC) to date was the SCS ambush by the amazons. They appeared in the middle of a map while the Crew were already fighting another battle, making it difficult to avoid them. Boss was a bit separated from the others at the time and I didn't keep him moving enough to protect him from a backstab. By the time he got out of missile range following the backstab he was down to 3 HPs.

Stats
Boss, fighter L5, 56 HPs, 155 kills
Flail, fighter L5, 57 HPs, 146 kills, 3 deaths (Zal, kobold guard, bandit camp)
Hammer, fighter L5, 63 HPs, 123 kills, 2 deaths (Zal, bandit camp)
2-H, fighter L5, 62 HPs, 210 kills
Axe, fighter L5, 56 HPs, 139 kills
Halberd, fighter L5, 56 HPs, 130 kills, 2 deaths (bandit camp x2)
One requirement of my installation is that no more than 2* can be put in any weapon proficiency at character generation. That means that all the characters above have specialised in missile weapons and kills have generally been pretty evenly shared. 2-H has got rather more than the others - indicating the superiority of his composite long bow over other missile types.

Wrecking Crew III (Final update)

It was fun while it lasted, but the Crew eventually ground to a halt at the Cloakwood Mine.

The spider area had not been easy - 4 giant spiders in Centeol's lair all using webs on characters without any protection was a definite problem.  However, they triumphed at the cost of 2 resurrections.

Amarande the Arch Druid was even worse.  Only 1 character was killed, but at one point 3 of the other 5 were charmed by Amarande's sidekicks making getting through Amarande's potions of extra-healing difficult - but Boss triumphed in the end.

The problems at the mine started when Kysus ignored the lead character and cast his chaos way into the rear area - causing 3 of the party to be confused.  With Drasus hitting extremely hard casualties quickly mounted and it looked bad when Boss was confused by Rezdan.  However, he ran the right way and survived long enough to finish Drasus off.  With the help of Halberd, who had also survived the initial stages, he managed to drain both mages of all their spells, but by the end of that he was in single figure HPs and all alone.  Before resting I wanted to try and kill the mages and then gather together the best equipment from his party.  Rezdan was no problem as he had no missiles, but Kysus had throwing daggers, so was still a danger.

The situation was complicated further by a couple of Black Talons that had respawned from an encounter point, meaning there was limited space available to try and run Kysus round.  In order to dodge the Black Talons at all Boss had put boots of speed on and not changing back to boots of avoidance proved costly when he decided to try and finish Kysus off.  That took quite a few arrows in order to get through stoneskins and healing potions and Kysus had had several attacks in return, so I was pleased when the screen finally showed him dead.  Unfortunately, looking a bit closer at the text, showed that Kysus had managed a hit with his final attack.  I was momentarily tempted to take a potion of healing after all, but decided to stick to my principles hoping that the dagger would not take all his remaining 3 HPs - but it did.

Posted Image

I rather underestimated the effectiveness of the SCS changes to the AI when going through the Cloakwood and hit problems as a result.  There were several ways I could have increased the Crew's chances of success a bit (without altering my self-imposed rules) and will probably re-start them and see if I can improve on that performance.

Grond0, those self-imposed rules make it a tough go. Though, I figure that you must have a plan. Like weightlifting. You are trying to lift something really heavy, then when you switch back to the regular weight, it will feel light as a feather. Am I on the right track?

Good luck with Boss III. (or is it IV?)

Uh, Grond0, did you and Kysus just do like a scene out of a Western? Both guys pull out their guns and kill each other? Not too often that happens in a no-reload...

Also, how are you supposed to beat Basilisks in Candlekeep Crypts if you can't use activated items (mirror eyes)? Nor could you use scroll of stone to flesh with your rules...

Good luck with your next attempt regardless.

True ... isn't it terrible when people read what you've written properlyPosted Image.  I suppose what I had in mind was something akin to wizard slayer restrictions and they can use green scrolls, so I was actually intending to allow that.  Although it wasn't an issue yet I was also intending to allow the use of the violet potion (in order to be able to recover the tomes from the Candlekeep crypts).

Something like that.  Just completing BG1 isn't much of a challenge any more, so it needs a few extra wrinkles to keep it interesting.

I found that which is why I am playing DSoSC.

The main plot is easy, but it is the added battles that make it worth doing.

Once I've sussed out the battles no doubt I will be returning to Tutu and using SCS to make it more difficult.

It'll be a while before I try the restrictions you are using however.

Quirkus had no difficulty back at Candlekeep and is now trying to decide what route to take, Durlag's Tower? Werewolf Island? Ice Island? The Ducal Palace? The Green Dragon?

PS I don't think that I mentioned that Yeslick has joined the party. Another cleric was not really needed and when I start the DSoSC part of the game, I'll have to decide who to drop.

Imoen's lack of opening locks ability was a bit of a pain as I had to rely on the knock spell on a number of occasions. This meant finding a safe place to sleep. Since she joined I have put all points in opening locks and she is now a passable thief.

Wrecking Crew IV (Update 1)

I've restarted the save I made on character creation.  Same installation as with attempt number 3. i.e. quite a few mods, including SCS.

The party will be under the additional restriction of not being allowed to make use of most consumable or charged items.  Exceptions will be allowed for green scrolls and the violet potion (setting strength to 25 to allow access to the tomes in the Candlekeep crypts).  Additional NPCs are not allowed to be recruited.

In Candlekeep all characters purchased their favoured weapons, although only Flail (as the normal lead character) got given armour initially.  After completing the tasks there they watched Gorion get ambushed and took out their anger on Xzar and Montaron before making their way to Beregost via High Hedge.

The intention is to fully explore all wilderness areas and do all the encounters there, though some dangerous encounters may be left until later.  There was no need for any delay in the area to the south.  The 3 Flaming Fist spoiling for a fight just provided 3 suits of plate armour to the party.  There's also another Fist hunting Viconia there.  He uses clerical spells, so is dangerous to a solo PC - but to the Crew was just another source of plate armour.

In Beregost the Crew placated Marl and killed some spiders & Karlat.  Also returned Mirianne's letter, Zhurlong's boots & Perdue's sword and purchased +1 shortbow & +1 sling.  Algernon was also killed (for his cloak - my rules allow this to be worn for the charisma benefit, though not used - and to manipulate reputation).

The Crew then made their way to Nashkel.  On the way, Hammer proved to be Shar-Teel's superior (not difficult to throw darts at her when she was surrounded by the other charactersPosted Image).  Lord Foreshadow handed over a ring of human influence (again, can be worn, but not used).  Also on the way, the party suffered their first injury when Flail was hit by a kobold commando; seconds later they suffered their first death when she was hit again.

In Nashkel Flail was revived and recuperated at the inn after Neira was forcibly removed (Boss getting Bhaal drain life when resting).  Flail dug up a suit of armour to improve her AC a little more.  Also in the area the party was patient with Noober and saved a little boy from his pet wyvern.

Party members (in marching order):
Flail - 2* flail, 2* sling.  Will progress to 5* flail.
Hammer - 2* hammer, 2* dart.  Will progress to 5* hammer.
2-H - 2* 2-handed sword, 2* long bow.  Will progress to 5* 2-handed sword.
Axe - 2* axe, 2* dagger.  Will progress to 5* axe.
Boss - 2* mace, 2* short bow.  Will progress to 5* short bow.
Halberd - 2* halberd, 2* cross bow.  Will progress to 5* halberd.

@Grond0 - the only proficiency I don't get is the ones for Axe - specifically, why bother with dagger proficiencies? For jellies and such axes are way better. Granted throwing daggers are two attacks a round, but would think a sling which can use magical ammo and farther range would better overall, not to mention less maintenance. In BG 2, there's the firetooth throwing dagger in Ust Natha, but that's a LONG way off...also in BG 2 there's quite a few nice slings (sling of seeking, dragons' bane, sling of Avoreen)

I was indeed thinking of Firetooth - the elemental damage would make that preferable to using axes in some circumstances. He would have put all his pips into axes initially, but my installation doesn't allow more than 2* against anything at character creation.  I was also trying to have everyone have a different proficiency, rather than duplicate on slings.
