Grimwald, sorry to hear of the death of Quirkus. The Wyrmslayer sounds like he'll have some momentum just from his powerful name. ;) Here's to lots of dead dragons!

The Item Randomiser mod is making me switch things up quite a bit. I think it shuffles around the location of the tomes (I haven't found one yet), and it also changes the tomes to be about different attribute points. I'm not counting on being able to boost any stats until well into BG2. And the idea of planning for high level spells (ie Wish) is pretty silly, but hey, one day I might make it past Sarevok. Maybe.

And I'm going to run with a party again (because I'm not good enough to keep a solo character alive yet). So maybe a meathead like Ajantis will carry all the loot. If Lauryn can tolerate him, that is.

Agreed! Go Trog!  (and various wild mage escorts)

Interesting CON score, as thieves and mages don't get any bonus past 16 CON - unless you intend to sacrifice your familiars?

Haha, that's just me not knowing all the game mechanics. Let's just say that the extra CON points represent her incredible streak of stubbornness. Hopefully that will help her stay alive.

And thank you for the kind words! We'll see, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of making past the first two chapters.

18 con for a mage can also be helpful when equipping the Claw of Kazgoroth.  That allows negative saves vs spells to be achieved much earlier.

Hard luck with the Nereids.  They (and their water weirds) are pretty vicious, so you might want to leave them until you're rather higher level.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 - (update 2)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

Murl & Rue made further progress last night, principally with the aim of improving their equipment in the City.  They acquired the Helm and Cloak of Balduran, Ogre Gauntlets and the three tomes.

Murl had another close shave in the above process.  Jalantha was attacked and survived long enough to flame strike both characters.  Neither was hurt very badly, but Murl disdained the idea of being healed before walking into the trap protecting the Helm.  He got away with it - if not particularly easily.

The roster of equipment was rounded out with a couple of quick trips.  First they went back to the Cloakwood where Murl sneaked into Centeol's lair.  His attempt to hide there failed, meaning there were a couple of nervous moments before he was able to dodge past the attackers to get outside and successfully fade into the shadows.  Then they went to Samuel's area to pick up the ring of fire resistance and the scroll of magic protection.

Murl investigated the Iron Throne peacefully and the duo have just arrived back at Candlekeep.

Stats:
Rue, inquisitor L7, HPs 89, kills 169
Murl, monk L7, HPs 55, kills 88

& also to say con 18 means you can get to 20 and have regeneration (either from the hells trials or Lum's machine) to free up ring or helm slots. Alternately sacrifice it in a loss of Bhaalspawn powers vision, so many choices.

Hi all,

Probably it's a stupid question but I did not find the answer in the FAQ or whatever.
How to insert images in a post (and when I read all your posts, it seems there are two options; visible in the post, or as a link).
Thanks

Good point about the Claw of Kazagaroth - I so rarely use it, I almost never plan in advance for it. With 18 CON he can basically use it with no real penalty, good deal. Next time I roll a pure thief I think I will do that (18 CON), just so that I can then use the claw without a problem. it exports to BG 2 if you do it right and that's nice too.

But isn't 17 CON enough for the start ? Claw of Kasgaroth is realy expensive and when you can afford to buy it, you (generaly) have already cleaned lighthouse area (and you collected the CON tome in order to reach 18 and have no health penalty for using claw).
Gate70 said about regeneration if you reach 20, but you can obtain it only in late SOA, so it's not usefull to get so high in my opinion (for non fighter types).

Edit: Oh; thanks Serg

There are a lot of options, no right or wrong way to play the game.
& quote a post then use the BBCode option to see how the screenshots are added.

Ajantis / Khalid / Mayhem / Imoen / Jaheira / Kivan
Imoen hands over 200gp and watches intently as Kivan is brought back to life. Ajantis is distracted from his Helmite praying in this temple of Helm, turning angrily as Imoen lowers the tone “Poor sod, taking a dirt nap thanks to that gnoll noticing his lack of helmet and determination to fight with his bow”.

Neira sees a series of spells disrupted, with Mayhem adding a LM-Drain at one point (it’s an enclosed area with the party and neutrals everywhere but fortunately the “What’s that noise” surge only seems to set fire to Neira’s armour).

Caldo, Krumm, Zal and Vax put up little resistance but Sendai of Amn calls for aid and Delgod answers. Ajantis glugs two healing potions and retreats to glug a third, leaving Imoen to glug another as Delgod starts on her. He’s still shooting as Ajantis returns to cut him down from behind (not sure that’s an acceptable behaviour Ajantis).

Mayhem distances herself from the party to apply two LMD’s to a doomed Greywolf. Then Ajantis picks up a ring (fire resistance) and briefly helps Joseph before handing him on to Kivan. Hafiz takes one look at us, shakes his head at our lack of shorty savings and gives us a scroll (protection from magic).

40 hours later we have delivered Samuel to the safety of the Temple of Wisdom. Gellana Mirrorshade stares at Khalid and asks if he wants help removing the girdle of gender. Jaheira immediately tries to hand over some gold but Khalid has enjoyed the recent lack of attention from his wife and refuses to cooperate.

Mayhem casts a gaze reflection on Ajantis and we set to work clearing out the rock garden. After four basilisks are down Imoen asks Ajantis why he is punching the reptiles (oops, tried the Varscona sword after Greywolf and forgot to re-equip another one).

Mutamin is killed despite his greater basilisk and a couple of critters drawn in by Khalid. We free Tamah and then approach the final pair of basilisks. One is badly wounded then Ajantis loses his reflection. Mayhem has protected Khalid before dealing with Mutamin so he steps closer as Ajantis runs. He manages to retreat behind the party just as he is turned to stone. Khalid soaks up the remaining gazes and we head to a temple for another scroll.

Ajantis picks up where he left off “By Helm”. No, by Lothander.

We are attacked as we rest, so run. Into an ambush which we briefly try to fight then run again as it becomes clear our position is untenable. Into a second ambush which is not something a low level party want to face. We run again, Jaheira and Ajantis taking slight damage but it could have been much worse.Image IPB

After making our escape we rest and review progress.

Ajantis, paladin 4. 13 kills, winter wolf. Bastard sword.
Khalid, fighter 3. 11 kills, lesser basilisk. Longbow.
Mayhem, wild mage 3. 16 kills, greater basilisk. Sling.
Imoen, thief 4. 6 kills, Sendai. Shortbow.
Jaheira, fighter 3 / druid 3. 14 kills, lesser basilisk. Sling +1.
Kivan, ranger 4. 27 kills, greater basilisk. Composite longbow.

That's me not realising the implications of the item randomiser, since I have never played with it.

I can see that it could make drastic changes to the game such as getting spider bane early instead of late. I'll have to read the readme and see if I might use it sometime in the future.

Grimwald Wyrmslayer was given a prophesy at birth that he would slay wyrms, or was that worms?

Alrighty, I decided to drop the whole solo project - as I find the experience difference a real dealbreaker for me (challenges drop quite a bit when playing solo, as you race through levels way too fast for my taste).
Instead I will drop my standard 4-man party down to 3.

I will use ability rolls like I have before to determine stats, with racial bonuses and house rule still in play.

Necromancer
Tyralus Balerian

Ability Scores:
Rolls: 6-3-6-1 > 16-1 = 15,  6-1-4-5 > 16-1 = 15, 4-6-6-6 > 22-4 = 18, Intelligence: 4-5-1-6 > 16-1 = 15, Wisdom: 6-5-1-6 > 17-1 = 16 (sick rolls!), Charisma: 6-6-6-6 > 24-6 = 18 (holy hell! A perfect roll!)

Human Racial: +2 Chosen Ability (With the racial, this turns out to be a 99(!) roll - which is quite overpowered. The dice gods have spoken, and as such I will heed their call for this run).

Elf(Vampire) Female Fighter/Thief
Valeris Rochford III

Rolls: 4-4-3-5>16-3=13, 5-3-6-5>19-3=16, 6-5-6-4>21-4=17, 6-1-6-6>19-1=18, 2-5-4-1>12-1=11, 3-2-1-2>8 1=7, 1-5-5-2>13-1=12. (another set of pretty good rolls, I'm happy!)

Elf Racial: +2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Con.

Dwarf(Duergar) Male Priest of Helm (actually a Priest of Ladaguer in disguise)
Gryndar Grogslayer

Rolls: 5-4-3-5>17-3=14, 6-3-4-6>19-3=16 , 2-3-6-5=16-2=14, 3-3-1-4>11-1=10, 6-3-5-3>17-3=14, 5-3-1-1>10-1=9, 3-3-1-4>11-1=10.

Dwarf Racial: +2 Con, +2 Wis, -2 Cha

Looking forward to playing a character devoid of using invisibility and most spells common to illusionists. The party is wierdly enough neutral, though both Valeris and Tyralus are borderline insane.

Good luck out there everyone, see you at the Friendly Arm Inn before long!

Ajantis / Khalid / Mayhem / Imoen / Jaheira / Kivan
Ardrouine is desperate to get rid of Ajantis (reputation 20) so tells him about Black Alaric and his cave. Luckily for us he has a greenstone amulet and a cloak of displacement, plus our spread of attacks disrupts three sirines from casting improved invisibility. One sirine accompanying Sil manages to cast her invisibility and proves a little more challenging to kill, but not any real danger.

Ajantis has his girdle of bluntness to help against flesh golems and is using the Varscona longsword. Imoen, Kivan and Khalid use arrows of piercing too and Ajantis only has to run from the third golem before Khalid kills it.

We kill some half-ogres for Bjornin but then Kivan complains about not killing bandits quickly enough so we drop everything and head to Nashkel mine while Imoen insists on holding the magical arrows previously entrusted to the ranger.

We race through the mine, killing Mulahey without too much issue. Kivan may or may not be appeased so we report in to Berrun Ghastkill before Nimbul accosts us. He shrugs off our many missiles to scare and kill Ajantis, then panics and runs. We give chase but he vanishes and appears a few moments later to hit Jaheira with his last ever set of magic missiles. A nearby temple raises Ajantis and we make our way to Beregost.

We’re really tired and a bit worse for wear but Tranzig doesn’t put up any serious resistance before we head to Larswood. Kivan sneaks up on Teven and we blag our way into the bandit camp. Tazok ignores Ajantis and swipes Mayhem to the ground, but she gamely moves away and LMD’s her health back before he agrees to let us join.

After Tazok leaves we ambush the bandits. Ajantis moves from archer to archer as Taugosz Khosann gives chase, our missiles eventually tagging him. We rest and buff before entering the main tent where Venkt falls to missiles as Ajantis melees Raemon and Britik while dodging poison arrows shot by Hakt.

Imoen grabs a cloak from a group of tasloi then Ajantis barely survives a lightning strike from Seniyad the druid (1hp left, good job he had the boots of grounding on). Kivan suggests we speak to a not-so-nearby nereid called Shoal to see what options we have against electricity. After Shoal kills him we convince her to raise him by killing Droth the ogre mage to release her.

Ajantis / Khalid / Mayhem / Imoen / Jaheira / Kivan
Khalid demonstrates to Meilum that the best swordsman around shouldn’t pick on a party, while Jaheira picks up a nasty wyvern bite in an ambush. She’s reluctantly convinced that we should investigate a cave and Ajantis takes three bites but proves far more resistant to the oozing poison than the druid was. Lakadaar won’t give us chance to explain about the wyverns in the woods, but he and his men all succumb to sleep.

Clint Eastwood Kivan spots Drasus and his mercenaries, suggesting we liven things up for them. Mayhem tries to entangle them in a web but a surge makes us combat ready (whatever that is), then she casts stinking cloud but is spotted. We slow Drasus down with missiles and a doom so the cloud casting can conclude. Then we switch to Kysus as Ajantis intercepts Drasus. Rezdan and Genthore are snoozing in the cloud, and once Kysus is dead they are pinned to the ground with missiles. Ajantis and Drasus are still missing each other but a volley or two of missiles soon has the battle sewn up.

Mayhem has figured out flame arrows by now so Ajantis is taking care of his helm of defence and ring of fire protection even more lovingly than usual. Ajantis uses a potion of absorbtion to deal with Hareishan and her guards are mopped up with horror > sleep. Some light healing sees us deal with a few more guards then Imoen clears the final cluster of traps as Jaheira protects Ajantis from fire.

Ajantis takes a lightning bolt (absorbed) then a fireball (protected) before using the greenstone amulet for a third time. We shoot down a pair of ettercaps then converge on Davaeorn and Ajantis with melee weapons equipped. The battle is over in moments and we make our way to Baldur’s Gate after looting and flooding the mine.

Ajantis, paladin 5. 46 kills, Davaeorn. Bastard sword.
Khalid, fighter 5. 78 kills, flesh golem. Longbow of Marksmanship.
Mayhem, wild mage 5. 28 kills, greater basilisk. Sling.
Imoen, thief 6. 24 kills, Genthore. Shortbow.
Jaheira, fighter 4 / druid 5. 40 kills, Seniyad. Sling +1.
Kivan, ranger 5. 86 kills, greater basilisk. Composite longbow.

Ajantis / Khalid / Mayhem / Imoen / Jaheira / Kivan
Ajantis is racking up the good deeds, from the Seven Suns to the Merchants Consortium to Sunin and Ramazith. Imoen drops everything to scoot upstairs and loot Ramazith’s tower, earning a reprimand from Ajantis about sneaking around with no clothes on when her pink tunic weighs next to nothing and keeps her modesty intact. She replies that he has no idea what her idea of fun is and not everybody wants to be encased from head to toe in full plate armour.

Ajantis is aghast, ordering no more such behaviour only to see Kivan getting dressed again. He had no need to do this when sneaking in to speak to Degrodel other than to annoy Ajantis and it worked. Imoen congratulates him and hands Ajantis the helm of Balduran to shut him up.

Some more work sees the cloak of Balduran and a shield +1/+4 fall into the hands of the party. Vay-va confuses Ajantis but our missiles have the better of her then Desreta is doomed before Mayhem uses a wand to paralyze her. With her dead Kivan is hit once by Ajantis before Jaheira can dispel the confusion and remind him to USE THE AMULET.

An early visit to the Iron Throne HQ (xp 37k-40k) sees the four casters eliminated in relatively short order.Image IPB

Zhalimar and Gardush may both be doomed but it is the doppelganger who is sent to sleep so Ajantis glugs a couple of healing potions as we finish them off. Jaheira congratulates Ajantis for remembering to use his amulet.

Zacner the solo level 5 conjurer entering the challenge...

I think mages in BG 2 are interesting, but very boring in BG 1. But of course I prefer trilogy - so in the interest in getting a mage through BG 1 as soon as possible, Zacner is doing this solo. I have never soloed a mage before in BG 1 so this will definitely be an adventure...

SETUP:
EasyTutu
TotSC and Official TotSC patch
Core Rules at all times
no mods

Zacner the Conjurer:
Image IPB

Zacner has traveled nearly everywhere while invisible, and only fighting ambushes of his choice. This is how he obtained his ring of wizardry early, and how he unlocked Ulgoth's Beard early. He concentrated on easy experience, Beregost quests and items/spells he must have.

Zacner traveled VERY early to the Ankheg Nest - he used invisibility to get to the treasure trove, paused, looted everything then went invisible via spell before the Ankheg could attack. This brought both much needed cash and the extremely useful fireball wand.

Eventually he was ready to deal with Mulahey.

Zacner skipped the entire mine - he activated greenstone amulet and tried to blind Mulahey x2 but failed. Zacner then used fireball to clear out most of Mulahey's friends, then Scorcher (wand) to finish both the survivors and Mulahey himself. Zacner got the important web spell in the nearby chest.
Image IPB

After selling/resting at the carnival, Zacner traveled to Nashkel. When reporting to the Mayor, that got Zacner level 5. Plan for Nimbul? Try to blind (failed), then go invisible - back off and web out of sight. Then blind again, then damage spells/sling to finish Nimbul - this worked well as you can see.
Image IPB

Zacner made a quick stop south, using Dire Charm to charm Zax to attack Val, who in turn got killed by kobolds who were then slept then slinged. He can't use the bracers, oh well will sell it then.

Tranzig was next. Dire charm was used to have Algernon help Zacner against Tranzig - Algernon was slain! Bummer. : ) Scorcher (wand) once again won the day.

Here's Zacner's equipment/configuration by this point.

He can use Meilum's though, which would be more beneficial to him anyway.

Khrang, dwarf barbarian (update 1)

I thought I would have a go at something rather faster paced than the Wrecking Crew.  As a precursor to starting Khrang I tried to get rid of the vestiges of SCS from my installation, but failed and ended up with a new installation (BGT with a few BG2 tweaks).

Khrang seemed to have a sensational start when he got 34 HPs for his 2 levels for killing Shoal.  I accepted that, but got suspicious when he received a further 17 in Beregost.  On checking, I realised that the new installation had defaulted to normal difficulty, rather than core, which gives maximum HPs.  To remedy that I created a new character and consoled them up to level 3 and adjusted Khrang's HPs to that.

He has just arrived in Baldur's Gate for the first time without much in the way of problems.  Up to the encounter with Daveorn he hadn't used any potions.  However, he had struggled a bit to kill the first battle horror and then a number of guards before successfully resting (using rage to fully heal).  The second battle horror was also damaging him significantly and I decided to use an invisibility potion to take it out of the combat and allow Khrang to rest.  Having done that I thought I might as well also use a magic blocking potion to finish off Daveorn.

Here's his current character record.  After the early excitement his HPs have ended up a bit below the average of 97.5.  Despite his dwarven heritage he's actually using a 2-handed sword and short bow.

As I promised, a link for the life of Quirkus in pictures:

http://s1108.photobu...library/Quirkus

I was delighted that I could kill the demonknight at the top of the tower despite having the protection from magic scroll being altered. Wrongly in my opinion.

I had to use another spell that Klorox used instead.

Diary of Grimwald Dragonslayer
At my birth, it was predicted that not only would I become a powerful fighter-mage, but that I would become famed for killing dragons, and so to my name Grimwald the name Dragonslayer was added. I started this diary after my mentor Gorion was so cruelly killed. At his command I fled, going even further than he said in an attempt to throw my attackers off my scent. I killed hobgoblins and zombies and returned a ring to Joia and in addition brought justice to Sonner and his motley crew. Unfortunately the priestess would not speak to me afterwards so perhaps I will go and see her again later. (A bug methinks.) At the Friendly Arms Inn I found that the place was not as friendly as the name implied. I was attacked by a mage called tarnesh and it was only because I quickly cast a blindness spell that I survived. Once he was blind I could probably have killed him myself, but didn’t have to since a guard killed him.

I think that my activities may bring unwanted attention to this area so I have doubled back and gone to High Hedge where I was able to help Melicamp an apprentice mage, and I also bought an identity scroll. On the body of a Gnoll who attacked me, I found a sword with the name Perdue inscribed on it, quite an apt name since he seems to have lost it. North of Beregost I killed an ogre with a belt fetish and perhaps other fetishes too since he was wearing a belt that changes the gender of the wearer.

After leaving Beregost, I headed southwards, killing ogrillon, an antagonistic member of the Flaming Fist, and several hobgoblins. I reached Nashkel where I found some good armour after which I came across a rather annoying character called Noober. I was later mistaken for Greywolf and was offered some gold that he was owed. I refused it of course and headed south where I met him and was forced to kill him. I had to use a blindness spell twice as it didn’t affect him the first time. Prism died shortly afterwards and I have now officially become a “hero”. Not much of a hero if you ask me. I intend to earn that title in due time.

I then returned to see Tenya and she is now speaking to me. She was pleased to know that Sonner and his cohorts are dead. As far as I am concerned they were equally as bad, but perhaps I can deal with her later.
I can currently cast level 2 spells, but have not yet learned any. I will have to find some scrolls soon as they are considerably more useful.

It was then time to deal with Bassilus and Zargal before heading south to help a boy find his dog, kill Zal using blindness, before heading west where a dryad was helped, a cat was returned to its owner and some ogres also succumbed to blindness.

Khrang, dwarf barbarian (final update)

Khrang has safely arrived in Irenicus's dungeon.

In Baldur's Gate he collected the tomes.  Surprisingly, given that divine spells are much harder to interrupt than arcane ones, Jalantha was interrupted and died before her second flame strike attempt.  Marek, however, shrugged off a meaty blow to get a lightning bolt away - though he didn't get the chance for a second spell.

The Helm of Balduran was the only other equipment obtained before Khrang used a potion of invisibility to sneak into the Iron Throne (he just ran rapidly away).  Back at Candlekeep he used the standard method of scroll of protection from magic and storm giant strength potion to loot the tombs before escaping with another potion of invisibility.

Before returning to Baldur's Gate Khrang went to buy the Claw & Horn of Kazgoroth and picked up the last tome from Durlag's Tower.

Back in the city Slythe got a dispelling arrow and a few darts of stunning.  That was a practice run for the palace where the same tactics were used, though with the addition of potions (I felt Khrang already had enough XP so was trying to avoid him actually killing the dopplegangers).  That worked without problems and both dukes survived.

Another potion of invisibility saw Khrang through the maze and into the temple where Sarevok came out on his own to investigate who was firing dispelling arrows at him.  I gave Khrang some top-up potions to see if he could defeat Sarevok in melee, but he had to retreat to heal with Sarevok only at badly wounded.  After finishing him off I was going to report to Duke Belt, but belatedly realised that there was actually a tome I hadn't yet collected.  The last invisibility potion saw Khrang into the pirate cave and he then ran rapidly away (potion of speed in addition to boots of speed and barbarian fast movement) before any golems or sirenes could interfere.
