Cathy - halfling swashbuckler

After remaining in BG1 for a while I thought I would have another serious attempt at a trilogy run.  To that end I've run Cathy through BG1 this morning on a basic BGT installation (with fixpack, a few inventory tweaks and widescreen).

There were a couple of nasty moments when my concentration wavered after completing the return to Candlekeep.  The first was when going to get the constitution tome from the lighthouse area.  I didn't realise that one of the sirenes with Sil had successfully acquired sight of Cathy and it was more by luck than judgement that I noticed a spell projectile en route in time to forestall it with a potion.  The second was shortly after that when getting the tome at Durlag's Tower.  I did seem to remember that the trap there was hard to disable, but didn't expect it to go off with a disarm traps skill at 100 and hadn't protected Cathy in advance.

There were no more risks after that and Sarevok duly bit the dust allowing Cathy to report back to Belt for duty in Amn.

Update 2; For want of a sword?

I had a small moment of glory what with fetching a ring for one woman and then saving another from an irrate enforcer... after all, Drizzt is a Drow and look how he turned out. Anyway between the assassins after me and my killing of the flaming fist mercenary I decided it was prudent to avoid the main roads on my way south.

Nashkel:

I arrived insipid and innocently stepped into the inn for sucker so when a rather buff looking woman sauntered over to me I was not thinking... well not with my head anyway. When she declared her actual intentions towards me I knew being her uomo was out so I legged it but the silly Sheila followed me and I was only rescued once again because the local pickets decided that I was the set upon party.

After digging the shreds of my dignity out of the mud I got to chatting with one of the more colourful barflies named Volo about the troubles nearby;
1.    The mine is infested with something nasty.
2.    The guard captain went loopy.
3.    A bereft Ranger has loss his GF.
After resting up, my first task is to head east and find out the fate of the captain for the local Bobbies... I owe them.

No ****:

There I was in the middle of nowhere fighting against a Fiend and six wild dogs when this foreigner named Hentold runs into me babbling about needing saving, not from these guys but somehow this genius managed to entice a Revenant into being his nemesis. Before I could say “Yes, good luck with that one pal” he palms me a dagger, mumbles something about a cave and legs it.

Image IPB

As luck would have it, the dagger is a powerful magic item and it turned the battle tide but I still don’t consider myself a thief... look at me trying to justify keeping it, a cave somewhere, what am I supposed to do with that?

p.s. My conscience must have been working overtime last night because I just had the vilest dream but possibly the eeriest part is that I can now cast a ‘Heal’ spell.

Did you try & disable from a distance - with haste/boots I find that often leads to this sort of issue so now stand next to the trap then disable it.

Loving the antipodean collequialism's ussnorway, will Marek make you chunder or is there a better term (I vaguely remember "blow chunks" from a joke with two meanings). Hadn't heard uomo before though.

Thanks Gate70,

Cultural cringe aside I’d up chuck but chunder is gaining a certain dignity... uomo is Italic for man or macho, it is normally used if the positive spin is wanted i.e. he’s a hunk but not a chauvinist.

p.s. In my day a SNAG (sensitive new age guy) was a good thing... this was before political correctness police made calling someone gay into a no-no, if you were polite to the teacher, wouldn’t tug a girls tails or even had a GF (girl friend) then you were probably called gay at some stage.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 (2) - (update 2)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

A short session yesterday saw some decent progress from the duo.  Things started off with Meilum, who just managed to survive an initial stun from Murl, only to walk into a critical from Rue.  Jealous of Murl's new bracers Rue insisted on going to get a pair of her own from Zal & Vax.

Then on to the main quest after Tranzig provided directions to the bandit camp with his dying breath.  At the camp Murl relied on his monkish ability to dodge arrows while stunning Taugosz.  With the outside clear he then tried to do the same thing to Venkt, but missed.  While he ran back outside Rue came in to have a swing and successfully chose the right one of Venkt's images with a one-shot critical  - the others didn't last long.

In the Cloakwood the main action was in the spider area as Rue wanted Spiders Bane.  After pulling back various spiders and ettercaps one at a time Murl grabbed the sword before making a quick exit.  He was hit by a 16 HP critical from a giant spider on the way out, but the spiders decided not to follow outside and the duo were able to carry on untroubled.  The only other slight detour on the way to the mine was to go and collect a potion of invulnerability from Laskal.

At the mine Drasus was foolish to investigate intruders by himself and ran on to a stunning blow.  A co-ordinated attack on the mages then saw Rezdan incapacitated by an arrow of biting, but Kysus survived his attack and used Shadow Door.  That didn't help him much though as an inquisitor dispel disclosed his position and Murl finished him before he could cast again.  Murl then had fun running around corners to hide and attack Genthore with his poison dagger, while Rue pinned him in place.

No problems working through the mine.  Hareishan was dodged by the standard approach of Rue standing out of sight in the little room closest to the exit, while Murl sneaked down the stairs.  The other guards didn't last long and the duo are now considering the best way to deal with Daveorn.

Stats:
Rue, inquisitor L6, HPs 70, kills 183
Murl, monk L6, HPs 37, kills 97, 1 death

I know the sort of thing you mean, but that's not the problem with this trap.  I'm not sure whether it's possible to disarm it at all, but if so it needs more than a skill of 100 .

Edit: just used a test character to confirm the trap can't be disarmed, even with a skill of 240.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 (2) - (update 3)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

The duo had been left considering how to solve the problem that is MariaDaveorn.  Murl did most of the hard work by triggering the traps himself and then leading the battle horrors away before hiding.  Rue then meleed the mage with the help of a magic blocking potion.

In the city there was a bit of equipment to obtain:
- Rue took the tome of dexterity and one of intelligence (to allow him to survive an extra love-tap from an illithid).  Getting the latter also provided her with a +2 ring.
- Vay-ya was poisoned by an arrow of biting, which made getting the ogre gauntlets for Murl simple.
- Rue upped her protection considerably with the Helm & Cloak of Balduran, though the duo had to resort to shooting missiles at Larze after taking a beating from the ogre while on the way to get the Cloak.

Murl sneaked up to investigate the Iron Throne before Rue talked to Duke Eltan.  She somehow chose the wrong conversation option, but fortunately not one that leads to instant death and the duo were duly sent to Candlekeep.

In the tombs Rue used a magic protection scroll and giant strength to do some looting before a potion of invisibility and stealth allowed a peaceful exit.

There were no risks taken with the end game.  Sythe was pulled away and shot with an arrow of dispelling to open hostilities.  The greater dopplegangers at the palace were faced with not only 2 potioned-up adversaries, but 4 of them were caught in an inquisitor dispel - unsurprisingly both dukes were still alive when Murl hunted down the last scared doppleganger.  The maze traps were triggered with a magic blocking potion (though Murl was nearly shocked when a lightning bolt came through the wall close to where he was hiding).  The Undercity party were skirted.

At the temple a tried and trusted approach was again used.  Sarevok was pulled out with a dispelling arrow and then run round being shot, with a few attacks from stealth by Murl.  Gate70's compiled this record of the contest.
Image IPB

After a quick trip to Beregost to pick up the pantaloons from storage the duo reported back to Duke Belt and were sent on their way to Athkatla.

Stats:
Rue, inquisitor L7, HPs 82, kills 204
Murl, monk L7, HPs 47, kills 107, 1 death

Congrats youse lot.

That's Liverpudlian which all Baldur's Gate players should understand.

Starting a new game with a Paladin and a Fighter. They are twins and their physques are almost identical.

There the similarity ends. One has great charisma and hence became a paladin. The other great wisdom.

Ashanti, Elven Beastmaster: BG1 Overview

Before Ashanti gets too far into BG2, I should probably take a moment to record her BG1 adventures for posterity. This was a largely uneventful run so I'll dash through it quickly.

First: Ashanti's character record (that seem like a good place to start...).
Image IPB

As you can see, she was built like most of my characters- given a high dex and con but with the rest of the numbers allocated based on RP considerations. I'll admit that after having fiddled around with my Minsc clone -and in the process being reminded what a luxury a high natural strength is- I was semi-tempted to grant Ashanti the boon of bulging muscles. But in the end, I decided to go my usual route: the character in the picture looks strong, but not massively so. 13 made sense to me. Her proficiency points were allocated to two-handed weapon, short bows, and quarterstaves- all reasonable choices in BG1 and beyond.

So: onto Ashanti's adventures. While the beastmaster kit has a reputation for being underpowered in BG2, that logic unambiguously does not apply in BG1: beastmasters are outstanding in BG1. There are few easier solos in BG1.

Candlekeep to Mulahey

Ashanti took my characters' standard fasttrack route Lion's Way->Coastway (RoP)->FAI(RoW)->High Hedge (Wand of Sleep, Potion of Freedom)->Beregost (Marl, Spiders, L2, Mirianne RoP)->Nashkell (NoM, Pro Pet, Shield Amulet).

Her first kill came on the Coastway where she stalked and then felled a belt thieving Ogre.
Image IPB

The bulk of her early experience came in basilisks land.
Image IPB

After a touch of item collection aided by the Wand of Sleep, Ashanti made the trip north to Ulgoth's Beard and then took down Mulahey under  Potion of Strength, Potion of Freedom, Greenstone, and Shield,
Image IPB

The Bandit Camp

The Bandit Camp tent was cleared uneventfully using Pro Fire + Potion of Fire Resistance-> Necklace of Missles. Stealth kept the battle an intimate affair: Taugosz and his buds were skipped entirely. No screenshots here I'm afraid. Just close your eyes and picture a blind ranger running around blowing stuff up: that was basically it.

The Cloakwood

Ashanti safely traversed the Cloakwood with the aid of her familiar, Winston. As a reminder, Chaotic Good characters get the Fairy Dragon and its glorious Invisibility 10' Radius.
Image IPB

Beastmaster stealth (not familiar invisibility) go Ashanti pass Drasus.
Image IPB

It also allowed her to slip into Davaeorn's quarters unnoticed where Ashanti quickly dispatched the master of the mines running Pro Magic, Potion of Regeneration, Oil of Speed, Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, and Shield.
Image IPB

With all those lovely buffs running -and a Potion of Absorption at the ready- it seemed a shame to pass Drasus and his buds a second time without saying hi.
Image IPB
Image IPB

The Gate

Fastforwarding a touch, we see Ashanti handling the endgame. Having opened with a Potion of Freedom rather than a Potion of Invisibility, Slythe fell without making any progress.
Image IPB

Krystin's Skull Traps proved more dangerous though, in the end, they were far from threatening.
Image IPB

Dispelling Arrows, Aule's, and well chosen buffs proved more than the Improved Dopes could handle.
Image IPB

And that, of course, left naught but Sarevok. I'll tack on Ashanti's final BG1 battle in a moment.

Best,

A.

Alesia: Is this Ashanti II? Didn't you have an Ashanti who got taken out doing the Unseeing Eye Quest, or am I mis-remembering?

That's correct. Nearly: This is Ashanti III actually.

There were two prior beasmaster Ashantis. I foolishly killed both of them during the Unseeing Eye quest. The first died when an SCS beholder stole the Shield of Baldruan. I wasn't aware of that behavior at the time and was completely blindsided. The second died when I attempted to re-enter the sewers without having returned the Rift Device for destruction. I had taken a snooze between sessions and simply forgot what stage of the quest I was on.

I decided to give Ashanti another chance because I felt my prior runs hadn't done her justice: she clearly hadn't been played to her potential. I also thought it might provide a nice change of pace. Running a jester, I had access to a number of tactical options- some of which were overpowered and on the cheesy side (most notably high APR Chaos Blade melee). Beastmaster Ashanti will require a more deliberate, conventional playing style. So far it has worked out nicely: her run has been satisfying.

Best,

A.

Ashanti, Elven Beastmaster: BG1 Overview (Cont.)

So: The Sarevok fight.

I was expecting this to be pretty straightforward for Ashanti. And it was. But a few unexpected guests made the fight a touch trickier than I anticipated.

Unexpected guests? Yeah I know: sounds strange doesn't it? You'll understand soon enough.

Being her super-slick-sly steathly beastmaster-self, Ashanti chose to slip past Shaldrissa and the rest of Sarevok's die hard supporters. Unfortunately, I had apparently made the mistake of sending Ashanti past running only Invisibility via potion and not Stealth. That's an important distinction of course because the latter works with the Cloak of Non-Detection and the former doesn't. I had thought both were active but, apparently, it was just one. Predictably, Ashanti was revealed, the buffs fired and I -still not wanting to fight- quaffed another Potion of Invisibility and rushed into the temple.

I breathed a sigh of relief when the door slammed shut. But Ashanti gave me a nasty stare when it creaked open again.
Image IPB

I looked away, embarrassed, and then meekly said: "Well, at least there's just one?"

There was a moment of silence between us, and then the door creeked open again...

They even brought their fracking summoned dog...
Image IPB

Right. So now Ashanti had to fight two high level parties instead of just one. She was not pleased, but she was prepared. Ashanti thanked me for packing those extra just-in-case potions and then went to work.
Image IPB

As you can see from the portrait, Ashanti initiated combat running Potion of Magic Shielding, Pro Fire, Pro Electricity, Pro Acid, Potion of Regeneration, Oil of Speed, Potion of Heroism, Shield, and a strength brew (Potion of Strom Giant Strength). That worked out nicely. And while a few criticalled arrows reached her, it wasn't long before the interlopers were dispatched.
Image IPB

Time for big brother. Ashanti's battle plan here drew liberally from her predecessors. She opened with an Arrow of Dispelling on Sarevok and then went to work on the casters.
Image IPB

Her Oil of Speed conferred movement rate advantage kept her safe from melee weapons. Cloak of Displacement + Boots of Avoidance + Girdle of Piercing + Claw of the Kazgaroth + Shield Amulet handled the arrows. Scroll and potion buffs took care of the spell effects.

Tazok and Diarmid appreciated the need for speed. But the instant they established movement rate parity, it was taken away from them.
Image IPB

There was little they could do.
Image IPB

For style points, Ashanti finished Sarevok in melee. He had been taken down to Injured at range, but Ashanti completed the remainder of the fight without disengaging.

Fin.
Image IPB

And that is the belated and brief tale of Ashanti's BG1 adventures. I'll post on Ashanti's BG2 adventures up through Spellhold later in the evening.

Best,

A.

Hello everyone!

This is my first post here (registered yesterday) and I want to enter this amazing challenge myself :) I'm so happy that I found this forum (purely by accident too), I swear I thought I was the last one on Earth still playing this game. Really excited to share my playthroughs with the rest of ya! If I break any rules or something please let me know.

Anyway, I'll be using a 4 year old heavily modded Trilogy install for maximum difficulty (details here for those interested). I'm also no stranger to Ironman style "no reload" playing, it's actually my preferred way of playing most games and it all started with BG :)

http://imgur.com/69oOTuN  - Apparently I can't upload images for 7 days so I have to do it like this for now :(

So meet Max, a wimpy elven Mage with a roll of a 100 (rolled it 4 years ago with the Reroller and kept the save) and a proficiency point in daggers, because what mage doesn't love daggers? Max will try to overcome any obstacle he encounters almost exclusively with magic and wits, although occasionally he just might get his hands dirty and stab a foe or two in the gut with a dagger, just for good measure. Max has a special kind of thirst for power, one that he himself is not even aware of (not yet at least), so hopefully he can fulfill his true potential and not end up as the main ingredient in an Ogre's stew pot. Also, Max will solo and will not take any NPCs unless they're part of a quest or something.

Candlekeep

The very first thing that Max did was buy a dagger and a bunch of throwing daggers after selling an expensive gem which he found within the Candlekeep Inn. So Max was busy running around the keep doing various errands until he entered the bunkhouse and got ambushed by a fierce-looking assassin called Carbos. Having a whopping 6 hp and no spells memorized for this glorious first ever battle Max was forced to run around the table in the middle of the room to avoid the assassin's attacks while at the same time trying to hit Carbos with his freshly bought throwing daggers. After about 20 laps around the table and 5 throwing daggers later the mighty Carbos finally succumbed to his injuries leaving Max and his 6 hp victorious in the end. Hooray!

Feeling incredibly proud after that exhausting duel, Max was confident enough to face some rats in the storehouse, especially after Reevor gave him a good pep talk beforehand, but this time Max used his dagger since throwing daggers are quite expensive and they don't grow on trees (unlike diamonds apparently). Shortly after the rat massacre Max gets ambushed by yet another bloodthirsty assassin, this one seemed even more vicious than the previous one but Max kept his composure and applied the same "run around the table and occasionally throw a dagger at him" tactic which yet again proved to be very successful. There was nothing else left to do in Candlekeep so Max bought all of the throwing daggers that he could afford and left the keep with his beloved father, Gorion.

Yes. The idea is that he will dual to a cleric due to having to wait until the Cloakwood mines before you can get a good cleric. I have yet to decide at what level to dual, I think that levels 3 and 6 are optimal, or am I wrong?

I forgot to mention that my set-up is still vanilla plus DSoSC.

Diary of Dragonslayer and Wyrmslayer.

The duo left the scene of the ambush totally dismayed. If their attacker could kill the great Gorion, he was powerful indeed. They therefore fled as fast as they could, first to the Friendly Arms Inn where they were again attacked, but by a mage who was killed by the guards before he could cast any dangerous spells.

Further north they were attacked by hobgoblins, one of whom was carrying a ring engraved with the name Joia.

However they weren't stopping to find the owner with such a dangerous enemy on their tail.

Further north they met some fishermen and agreed to help them but upon discovering that the priestess that they wanted to kill was just a young girl whose mother they had killed, they agreed to help her instead.

Dodging a green monster, they headed further north where they killed a zombie before entering Baldur's Gate through the Postern Gate in the hope of losing their attacker by hiding in the crowds..

Hi. Welcome Bruce and Max.
Interesting mod set-up you've got there.
With the harder battles, you will need the extra merchants IMO.

I notice that you have a fix for Unfinished Business. Since I've been having problems with the kidnapping of Boo, (The game crashes) I was wondering if you could let me know where the fix is available.

All the best with your run. Enjoy!

Interesting run there Alesia. Congrats!

Hmm, I don't think that's a fix at all, not sure why it says "fix" there at the end. I believe it's just part of a regular install of UB, I checked it out. Even though this massive Trilogy install was done manually over 4 years ago I still have every mod from it and I could mail you this version of UB if that will help. Also, I never played "Kidnapping of Boo" so mine might be broken as well for all I know.

Dragonslayer and Wyrmslayer kept a low profile in Baldur's Gate but still managed to increase their reputation significantly.

A necklace was given to a mother's son at which the party was given a necklace of missiles.

A dead boy was returned to his father and as a result, they gained a shield.

Wyrmslayer was killed by an Ankheg near Tenya and Dragonslayer found a knife in its gullet.
Upon returning to the Gate, the knife was given to its owner's mother, another rep increase, and Wyrmslayer was raised. Having made their presence felt, they sneaked out of the Gate. Their attackers will probably spend some time looking for them there whilst they investigate the Friendly Arms southwards.

They are now both level 3.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 (3) - (update 1)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

Rue's investigation of a container in Athkatla was met by a stony silence, but we continue to believe the paladin / monk combination should be given a chance to show their abilities in the longer term.  Hence we're giving them a 3rd opportunity at a run.

So far so good for the duo, who have followed a pretty standard course to date - essentially Shoal, Beregost, Nashkel, Cloudpeaks, Meilum and basilisks.  The only worrying encounter was with Kirian and party after killing the basilisks.  Murl tried stunning Kirian, but she saved and the retaliation immediately had Murl running.  Rue used the necklace of missiles to take the casters out, but took significant damage in the process and had to run Lindin round while Murl took a couple of potions of healing before sprinting back to stun and kill Baerin.

Stats:
Rue, inquisitor L5, HPs 57, kills 58
Murl, monk L5, HPs 36, kills 20

Update 3; I’m not lost.

I travelled back to Feldepost's Inn and ended up killing a guy in a brawl after accidently saying the wrong thing about the poor sods deceased kin... bugger it now the bobbies will be out for my hide unless I can make amends somehow.

I made my way west like they do in all the bards tails and rescued a chicken then pressed on and eventually found the loopy captain... he had a chin wag with me about death, quite lucid considering, anyway he came quietly and Nalin promised to spread the word around that the nay sayers in Beregost had me pegged wrong because I was a decent sort after all.

The Wrath of Kelddath:

Now that I had some decent experience under my belt it was time for something more challenging so I spent most my cash on “potions of healing” & the “Dagger of venom” before setting after Bassilus. I’m no coward but a Cleric is a tuff ask for any Fighter and this one was a close call... I talked to him about the past in order to break his hold over the minions then opened up with ranged daggers, disrupting his first two spells & in the end it was my dagger against his hammer.

Image IPB

After cashing in the quest I wondered about a bit and eventually made my way to Shipwreck's Coast where I helped a fella out by fetching his ring before the slugs could eat it and killed a blue hussy named Shoal.

Hi oh the marry oh, Spelunking we will go:

Against **** loads of Kobolds with flaming and poison arrows I purchased “elixirs of health” & used the corners for hit and run skirmishes until the Sharman dropped. I admit that I got lucky here because the chief with the nastiest poison arrows somehow got himself lost in the scuffle... a cave delving leader with no sense of direction?

As it turns out the next boss was yet another Cleric but he didn’t put up any fight worth noticing so I rescued the damsel in distress... actually it was an Elf and a guy at that but it’s always the girl in stories so just call it poetic licence.

Meanwhile back at town:

I had another weird night and gained the ‘Minor Drain’ spell... what’s up with these dreams anyway?

Image IPB

I was about to tell Berrum about them when yet another powerful Cleric made some sort of sain and attacked me but the poor witless Nimbul miscounted how solid me and the local bobbies are!
