Looks like an interesting run, good luck Wise. By any chance the fighter dualing to thief, mage or cleric at some point?

Yes. The idea is that he will dual to a cleric due to having to wait until the Cloakwood mines before you can get a good cleric. I have yet to decide at what level to dual, I think that levels 3 and 6 are optimal, or am I wrong?

Well for the extra proficiencies, 3 and 6 are OK - I would strongly be tempted to dual at 7, however for the extra 1/2 attack you get with your weapons. I suspect you wouldn't be able to get your abilities back in BG 1 but in BG 2 they would be a very useful cleric (an Anomen like character, who is a fighter dualed to cleric level 7).

@Alesia - grats on your succesful run
@USSNorway - keep it up!
@Bruce Leet - good luck with your character

Max - lvl 1 elven Mage (part 2)

http://imgur.com/Ow0Xrcg - Profile Picture (can't upload images for 6 more days, sorry)

Gorion's Rest

A very sad day for Max, seeing his father getting killed in front of his own eyes when ambushed by a party just outside the Candlekeep gates. Max survived the encounter but only because Gorion told him to run, a decision that will probably haunt him for the rest of his days. To make matters worse, Max just realized that in all the hurry to leave Candlekeep he actually forgot to bring his most prized possession with him on the journey, his own spellbook. So having absolutely no spells to use and with only 2 pieces of gold in his pocket after spending everything on throwing daggers his future looked extremely bleak.

Luckily enough, his sister Imoen was apparently following them out of Candlekeep and appears out of nowhere to cheer Max up by giving him a couple of potions and a wand of magic missiles with 10 charges on it. Even though the wand shoots only a single magic missile he gladly accepts it, but declined Imoen's offer to join him on his journey because it's just too dangerous for her. So Max escorts her back to the Candlekeep entrance and makes funeral arrangements for Gorion with the Gatekeeper.

Max then returns to the area where his father was killed and finds a scroll case, a letter from Gorion and an Identify scroll. After memorizing his first spell which will come in handy he then procceeds to read Gorion's letter with tears in his eyes and swears revenge on his killer. So Max explores the rest of the area and finds 3 (!) black bears and a sole gibberling. Still having only 6 hp and no combat spells meant that if a bear (or even a gibberling) lands an attack on Max it would probably be a fatal one, so Max decides to kite the animals all around the map while throwing a bunch of daggers at them and hoping some of them actually hit. The gibberling was easily dispatched but the 3 bears were quite fast and only went down after about a dozen daggers in each.

After Max kills off the bears he notices a couple of shady looking characters standing by the road and laughing in his direction, apparently they found the fact that Max was getting chased by 3 different bears all over the area quite humorous. Despite not sharing their twisted sense of humor, Max says hello and learns that their names are Xzar and Montaron. They offer Max a couple of potions and more importantly 2 scrolls (Chill Touch and Larloch's Minor Drain) which Max happily accepts but declines their offer to join up with him, because he doesn't trust them despite their gifts. So Max continues along the road to the Friendly Arm Inn, a place that Gorion said was safe, when he notices a shiny diamond hidden in a tree trunk. He grabs it and immediately changes direction, this time to the south, in search of a powerful mage called Thalantyr with whom Gorion used to trade magical items with. Max plans to trade his diamond for some better spells to replenish his spellbook.

High Hedge

Following the south road led Max straight to High Hedge, the home of Thalantyr. Thalantyr did not seem like a friendly type but he did agree to trade with Max. Unfortunately, Max only had enough gold to purchase a single lvl 1 scroll and he did just that, he bought a Find Familiar scroll hoping it would give him an ally in the battles to come. Max thanked Thalantyr for the trade and went outside to memorize the scroll so he could rest and put it to use, but was awakened shortly after by a Ghast. A ghast is a powerful undead foe but it was slow and went down easily to a combination of magic missiles from the wand and some throwing daggers. Fighting his first undead foe was a very good experience for Max (650 XP!) and I'm sure he'll benefit from it in future encounters.

So Max rests undisturbed this time and successfully summons a small dragon-like creature, a Fairy Dragon. Max was planning to use him in battle but after seeing how this innocent little creature flutters his wings so happily about, he decides against it because he couldn't bear it if any harm came to it, as he already feels an incredible bond between him and his newly acquainted friend. At least Max no longer has 6 hp and won't die to a single arrow from a random road bandit, he now has 30 hp despite still being lvl 1!

Max then explores the rest of the area around High Hedge, finding a huge spider and a few Gnolls who are easily dispatched by a few dozen of throwing daggers. After the area was clear Max managed to scrape enough gold for another lvl 1 scroll from Thalantyr so this time he purchased Grease, a spell that will be very useful! So with nothing else to do here he makes way for the Friendly Arm Inn.

Crossroads

This place is absolutely swarming with road bandits and local wildlife but Max isn't worried as he feels he is well prepared. And soon enough a lone road bandit attacks Max with a ranged weapon but Max simply walks up to him and stabs him in the gut with a dagger, and soon after 2 more bandits suffer the exact same fate. Max continues north and after finding a Ring of Protection hidden in a rock gets attacked by a bloodthirsty Worg shortly after. Worgs are very fast and hard to kite effectively so Max uses his one and only memorized spell Grease on him, with great effect too! Max easily hits every single throwing dagger as the poor creature struggles to move out of the greasy area of effect.

http://i.imgur.com/TIAQf4O.jpg - Worg Battle

After the Worg dies Max finally gets enough XP for a level up, now he is level 2! He also gets 2 additional spell slots on his lvl1 mage spells and he chooses to memorize 2 more Grease spells. Max rests afterwards and with a total of 3 memorized Grease spells continues to explore the rest of the Crossroads area. He encounters the following enemies and decides to use Grease every time because it's super effective and fun too!

http://i.imgur.com/thEc5YM.jpg - Bandit & War Dog

http://i.imgur.com/NiqM0wp.jpg - A belt-thieving Ogre

Max found a Girdle of Piercing on the dead ogre's body which will come in very handy against these road bandits who prefer to use ranged weapons.

http://i.imgur.com/GThE5t6.jpg - Caravan Bandit Leader and her minions

To his delight Max finds out that the Grease spells stack on top of each other and are thus doubly effective! After the entire area was clear Max was left with only a handful of throwing daggers (9 from originally 300ish) but he didn't worry too much about it and continued north to find this Friendly Arm Inn he heard so much about.

Sorry everyone if I'm rambling too much or if I'm doing something wrong. I'm entirely open to criticism since I'm new at this :)

Max - lvl 2 elven Mage (part 3)

Image IPB

Friendly Arms Inn

Max had finally arrived at the Friendly Arms Inn but before he crossed the bridge he found yet another (completely by accident!) hidden treasure laying beside an evergreen tree, this time it was a Ring of Wizardry which doubled the amount of lvl 1 spells a mage can memorize, a very powerful artifact indeed. This meant that Max had just gotten a huge spike in power, he can now cast 6 spells instead of just 3 and this is how his spellbook looks like after resting just in front of the Inn.

http://imgur.com/CNvmdAd - Max's Spellbook

Feeling really happy about himself Max crossed the bridge and before he could step one foot inside the Inn he was ambushed by another assassin, this time a mage like Max himself. Knowing that mages in general have absolutely atrocious breath saves and that it's their biggest weakness, Max fired off a Grease spell at the mage assassin and he immediately fell victim to it before he could even cast anything, allowing Max to easily finish him off with a handful of throwing daggers. On his dead body Max found 3 new scrolls which he gladly learned (Magic Missile, Mage Armor and Burning Hands).

http://imgur.com/woY7L1U - Max vs Tarnesh

Max finally entered the Inn and immediately sold a bunch of minor loot to Bentley Mirrorshade, the Inn's owner and proprietor, which netted him a total of 231 gold, just enough to purchase a Small Box from him for 225 gold which can hold up to 12 small items! Then Max explored the rest of the Inn and other than a Potion of Invisibility that Jaheira gave him there was nothing else of interest. The potion itself will be very useful as a "panic button" for whenever Max gets into a big trouble with no other way out.

At this point Max only had 3 throwing daggers left in his inventory and Bentley had none to sell, so Max bought a few hundred darts for a meager sum of 5 gold and headed outside of the Inn to explore the area around the keep. Max is a terrible shot with darts but thac0 does not matter if the target is disabled somehow, each hit will connect with the target successfully, it's not ideal but darts must do for now. Max found several Hobgoblins north of the Inn and successfully tested out his new darts on them.

http://imgur.com/M0fSFLq - Max vs Hobgoblins

With the area clear, Max headed down south to the city of Beregost.

Bruce - you asked if you giving too much detail, but I don't think so you descriptions of your journey seem fine. 24 HP from a familiar is huge in BG 1 - I have EasyTutu, which only gives about 12 I think. what mod do you have lets you have so much (I think 24 is normal for BG 2).

Thank you for your feedback corey_russell :)

Ah yes, I think I remember manually overriding the BG1 familiars with the BG2 ones for some reason years ago. That's why I never use those guys, both versions of them seem very overpowered. I didn't even notice the discrepancy between BG1 and BG2 familiar HP gain, so I'll just remove 12 hp from Max with Shadowkeeper (it played no part so far and he doesn't get hit anyway much).

Sorry about that, I'll add a couple more handicaps to Max as punishment. :) In addition to not being able to use his familiar in any way, from now on he can't use any wands whatsoever and no green protection scrolls either. That should considerably nerf his offensive firepower and remove some defensive options as well, so should be even more fun :)

@Bruce Leet,
Nice story but I’m a bit confused... Is Max the type of individual that likes to refer to themselves in the third person or is someone else (the faerie dragon maybe) narrating this tail?

p.s. I’m sure you already know this but the skellies that infest High Hedge are an abundant spring for throwing daggers.

Haha no it's simply just me narrating my character's playthrough, it's as simple as that. I wanted to add some roleplaying elements to my 1st run to make it more fun for me (and hopefully others), instead of just saying "I killed this and that, finished this quest and that quest". Sometimes I can make something up (just for fun) so that it differs from your standard BG1 storyline which we've all gone through a million times, but it will mostly just be little things just to add some spice here and there and keep things fresh :) I hope that's okay. I always wanted to do a solo mage run ever since I read the now infamous "Journal of Elmonster" and I'm having a blast so far.

Thanks for the tip but strangely enough I cleared that whole area and haven't found a single skeleton, happens sometimes :) Don't really wanna abuse resting there for free daggers but maybe I'll have to do it once when I need to find a skull for the Melicamp quest later on.

Well at the time I didn't know anything about BG modding so it took me a whole week to research and prep for this setup, and then about 12 hours of installing each mod individually, but I was following some amazing tutorial that I found and I followed it to the letter. But I don't wanna go through all that again if I can help it, that's why this install is a few years old :) It was more than worth the trouble, I love it.

There are a few minor bugs in my game, mostly with kill counters but nothing I haven't been able to fix myself with the help of Shadowkeeper and NearInfinity.

@Grimwald the Wise - Are you from Liverpool by any chance?

Max - lvl 2 elven Mage (part 4)

http://imgur.com/Ow0Xrcg - Profile Picture

Beregost

Max arrives in Beregost and after exploring the city he finds a Wand of Lightning in the Manor House. Unfortunately, he hasn't the slightest clue on how to use such a powerful device and wishes Gorion was here to teach him. Oh well, at least he can sell it for a nice profit. Next up he discovers a few spiders in one of the houses and takes care of them with a couple of Grease spells. Also, he gets a level up and gains access to level 2 spells. Yay.

http://imgur.com/HEMpPEx - Max vs Spiders

So he pays another visit to Thalantyr and sells the wand for a whopping 1400 gold and buys a Friends scroll right away. Now Max can purchase anything with a massive 25% discount! After casting the Friends spell on himself Max talks to Thalantyr again and this time buys some more level 1 (Shield, Spook, Blindness, Protection from Evil) and level 2 (Resist Fear, Detect Invisibility, Power Word Sleep) scrolls.

Shortly after replenishing his spellbook Max tries to help out a bard called Silke with some ruffians but she ends up double-crossing him and a difficult battle lies ahead.

Max casts Shield on himself.
Silke casts Mirror Image on herself.
Max starts casting Blindness on Silke of which he had 4 memorized but she saves the first 3.
Silke keeps casting Magic Missiles until she ran out of them but Shield absorbed all of them.
Max throws his last Blindness and finally Silke gets blinded and is unable to target Max anymore.
Silke casts Improved Invisibility next.
Max counters it right away with Detect Invisibility and starts throwing daggers at her.
Silke casts another Mirror Image on herself and runs around blindly.
Max keeps throwing daggers at her until she is "near death".
Max casts Power Word Sleep at Silke and she is denied a chance to save due to her low HP and falls to the ground.
Max finishes her off with a couple of stabs from his dagger.

http://imgur.com/RxSYJ7D - Max vs Silke

Max rests after that difficult battle and enters the Red Sheaf Inn where he once again ambushed by an assassin, this time a fierce dwarf called Karlat. Max dodges his attacks easily and hits him with 5 magic missiles until he is near death at which point Max casts Power Word Sleep on him and the large dwarf falls to the ground. Max stabs him to death with his dagger and gets another level up which he celebrates with a large pint of ale!

http://i.imgur.com/AvKHPlS.jpg - Max vs Karlat

With nothing else to do in Beregost, Max continues on his way down south to find the troubled town of Nashkel.

Fun fact, the fight against Silke only took 86 throwing daggers and Max's entire arsenal of spells :)

No. I'm a Tyke, but did study in Liverpool for a year. At the time I thought it hilarious that my fellow students all with thick Liverpudlian accents teased me about mine!
I even went into the Kop wearing a Leeds United scarf and survived.
The banter I got was pretty good. My sister and brother in law support Liverpool and I went with my brother-in -law who lectured at John Moore University. (It was the Revie/Shankley era).

I am currently living near the foot of Annapurna.

I love the "All roight, all roight," spoken in a Liverpudlian accent in the game.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 23 (3) - (update 2)
Rue, human inquisitor (Grond0) & Murl, human monk (Gate70)

The duo started their latest session with a shopping trip to Ulgoth's Beard.  On the way there Murl decided to demonstrate his stealth by stealing some treasure from an ankheg nest.  That failed, so he decided to demonstrate his speed by running past the attackers before they could react.  One of them did manage to spit, so Murl had the opportunity to demonstrate that he had more HPs than his previous incarnation at this stage.

Murl's shiny new green amulet provided protection for him to melee Bassilus, while Rue picked off skeletons.  Similarly, the amulet neutralized the sirenes' attack in the lighthouse area.  Unfortunately the amulet did not provide any protection against golem fists.  It didn't take long for Rue to shoot them down, but long enough for one of them to get successive criticals against Murl - he was lucky not to be chunked.

There was a rapid trip through the Nashkel mine to confront Mulahey.  He saved against the first impact of Murl's fists to call for help, but succumbed to the second, while his support troops made little progress against Rue,  Nimbul was less successful than Mulahey - freezing in shock at the initial attack.  However, Tranzig did surprisingly well and actually managed to get an acid arrow off against Murl - Rue, though demonstrated that the continuing damage from that can be dispelled.

At the bandit camp Murl borrowed some missile protection from Rue while he ran round whacking bandit archers.  Taugosz was pulled away from others and just shot down.  Inside the main tent Venkt survived a stunning attack and Murl had to run away outside briefly to heal a poisoned arrow from Hakt.  However, he played tag with Rue who chopped Venkt down leaving the others pretty helpless.

The main action in the Cloakwood was in the spider area.  Rather than Murl grabbing Spider's Bane from stealth this time, Rue joined in the action to kill the defenders.  At the Cloakwood mine Drasus left the protection of his comrades and was swiftly stunned.  One of the mages was hit with an arrow of biting, while the other tried to hide behind a shadow door, but was revealed by a dispel and stunned before he could take any further action.  The session ended with the duo at the mine entrance.

Stats:
Rue, inquisitor L7, HPs 86, kills 173
Murl, monk L7, HPs 52, kills 105, 1 death

Hahaha good stuff that. I'm not scouse myself but I'm a massive Liverpool FC fan because my father is from Kirby. But I was born and raised in Croatia so never been to Anfield. Holy crap Annapurna is in Nepal? How on Earth did you end up there? :D

I'm retired so am doing voluntary work in Pokhara for three years. I finish at Christmas. Lived at Maghul when at college within sight of Kirkby which was just across a few fields. Walked from Maghul to Kirby to go to a dance there once. I have fond memories of Liverpool as it was where I had my first passionate kiss. It must have been a good kiss, I can remember it over forty years later. :)

EDIT Although it is pronounced Kirby, it is spelled Kirkby. In Liverpool, as in many places in the UK, not all the letters are pronounced. We are lazy!! Would you believe that Cholmondeley is pronounced Chumley??

Setting off from Candlekeep with Gorion, Wyrmslayer and I
escaped to the south after his sad demise. We killed some Gnoll, skeletons, and
a wolf and ended up helping restore Mellicamp to his rightful shape. We found a
sword on one of the Gnoll and I was able to return it to its rightful owner. I
say I returned it rather than we returned it due to the fact that Wyrmslayer
was killed in battle with yet another assassin, I killed the assassin and
took Wyrmslayer to the local temple to be raised. This cost me half of our
treasure, but brothers are far more precious than mere gold.

We ended up south of Nashkel where we ended up in a fight
with Greywolf in which Greywolf died but so
did aaagh…

I am going to give this another try later with the same starting duo, but will try with just the paladin first.
I found that some of the good weapons that I thought would be available to the cleric were not, which was a disappointment and it ruined the plans that I had for him. They were only available to lawful good clerics who had never been anything else.i.e. Even when I didn't have my fighter abilities available, I couldn't use them.:crying:

Safe travels Wise.

You may have to step over a few dead corpses on the way. e.g.
- A ranger charmed by Davaeorn.
- A fighter/thief travelling with Imoen, Viconia, Edwin. Died somewhere 1-2 hours in.
- A cavalier with Imoen, Viconia, Garrick. Basilisk ambush petrification when Imoen blocked him.
- A dwarf kensai at the temple of Bhaal - Angelo almost killed but got 1 last arrow in. Should have used the 1 invisibility potion to heal and re-buff (2nd attempt took a while but Sarevok fell to hit and run melee).

I have a blackguard rolled in BG:EE but the game only plays at about 10% of normal speed so I was waiting for the next patch which should resolve my graphic card issue. The patch (and BG2:EE) appears to be on indefinite hold so considering what to try through BGT next.

n.b. Blackguard is human only so Dorn would appear to be another "special" NPC.

Sorry to hear about your problems with EE Gate. I was thinking that I would get it myself after I have sussed out my current set-up, but looks like that might have to wait. The Sword Coast is definitely littered with bodies nowadays. "it's a dangerous age we live in."

Roliahv the elven stalker has so far eluded the hand of death. He's about to investigate Nashkel mine as his reputation, xp and equipment have been sorted out.

Girdles from an ogre, Krumm and Kirian.
Boots from a hobgoblin.
Bracers from Zal and Vax.
Swords from Greywolf and Neville.
Ring of Protection +1 from the wilderness.
Ring of Fire Resistance from near to Samuel.
Cloak of displacement and greenstone amulet from a store.
Tomes from the gnoll fortress and Black Alaric's cave.

1 amulet charge against Mutamin. Kirian was foolish enough to fight while Roliahv was talking to a charmed bear, 2nd charge used against her and Peter.

Level 6, 74hp. 851xp from level 7.

Job done - forgot to collect tome number 8 from Durlags Tower but have the pantaloons and Koveras' ring.

Many of the encounters were dominated by stealth. Zhalimar > Prat was done with one set of buffs, Slythe > Coronation > Maze > Sarevok > tidy-up Rahvin was done with a second that required a 2nd speed and invulnerability as 5 turns expired somewhere between Sarevok and Rahvin.

These are the stats at the transition.

Parr, LG human male mage (no kit).

Trying to wean myself off wild arcane magic. The statues of Khalid and Dynaheir are rising in value now Mutamin is dead.

Garrick died in a sleep ambush as I tried an area transition. Pressed Esc to return and grab his gear, which gave the kobolds long enough to kill Viconia too. 100gp and 400gp temple donations got them breathing again.

The red-robed freaks suffered a similar fate to Kirian - Viconia silencing them before holding them.

Parr, mage 3. 13 kills, Arghain.
Minsc, ranger 3. 33 kills, greater basilisk.
Imoen, thief 4. 23 kills, cave bear.
Viconia, cleric 4. 3 kills, wolf.
Jaheira, fighter 3 / druid 3. 19 kills, Mutamin.
Garrick, bard 4. 4 kills, lesser basilisk.
