Update 4; I almost died.

After all This time, I’m still standing;
It’s been about a week since I’ve had the willpower to scribble anything down because life’as been pretty good and that’s kind’of boring to write about. Yes I’ve had set backs, like the time I bashed my way over to the Gnoll Stronghold only to discover that the “Gauntlets of Dexterity” everyone braged about are fussy… actually I think it might just be me but I grabbed a “Tome of Leadership and Influence” whilst in the neighbourhood and asked (politely) that nice Thalantyr chap to identify it from me.

Pity shopping for my big night out at the tower:
I could tell he didn’t really want the gloves himself but I think he felt a bit sorry for me because he traded both a PfP and his rare PFM scroll for them.
The plan was simple enough, first skip past the battle horrors trying not to ****** myself then I’d pop the PfM to negate the trapped chapel container * then pop PfP across the stun trapped exit and battle the Greater Doppelgangers for a +2 scimitar. Yes alright, I had to run away from the battle horrors again to get out but all in all it was a profitable visit to the big scary tower everyone seems so afraid of.

Getting acquainted with the ladies:
With the extra Wisdom under my belt I remembered that other tomb in the wilds was guarded by these mentally dixie chicks so I payed a visit to Hafiz and after telling him about my wacko dreams he gave me another PfM which brings us full circle because I forgot all about the dumb effect an attractive lass has on me some times… still I did manage to get off on top by the end… never been so happy that I don’t have any friends.

* Gaining a “Tome of Understanding”.

PFM = “Protection from Magic”, PfP = “Protection from Petrification” & dixie chicks (slang) = females with militant anti-male issues.
P.S. I was not screaming as I ran past and that Erdane is gonna cop it from me for telling such fibs!

Max - lvl 9 elven Mage (part 8)

Handicaps - solo, no wands, no protection scrolls, no running from fights

Nashkel Mine

Max finally decided to deal with the whole iron ore shortage situation and headed into the Nashkel mine to explore it. What he found inside was an absolute swarm of Kobolds at every turn, but they were easily dispatched with the help of skull traps and cloudkill. Their leader Mulahey also succumbed to a Power Word Sleep spell and was easily finished off, along with his skeleton and kobold bodyguards. After informing the Nashkel mayor Berrun Ghastkill that the mine was successfully cleared, Max gets ambushed by yet another in a seemingly endless stream of assassins, this time a mage/thief called Nimbul who got instantly killed by a Lightning spell.

Posted Image

Max returns to Beregost to deal with a mage called Tranzig in hope of finding some answers. The mage refuses to cooperate and attacks him instead but gets transformed into a harmless little squirrel and killed.

Posted Image

Max then travels to High Hedge to visit Thalantyr, but naturally gets ambushed again by an entire group of female amazons who rudely interrupt his casting of cloudkill with a critical hit, so they definitely weren't playing around. What lied ahead was a very difficult and chaotic battle, mostly because Max didn't have a lot of spells ready and no cloudkill, but also because while he was dodging their attacks he ran into 3 separate groups of gnolls who joined the fight and sided with the amazons. Like that wasn't enough for Max to deal with, the amazons also summoned 3 groups of skeletons to join this overcrowded shindig. Max quickly ran out of spells and had resorted to throwing a few oil flasks of fiery burning at his foes, which left only a handful of them still standing so he eventually picked them off one by one with his throwing dagger.

Posted Image

A few days later after visiting various merchants and stocking up on potions Max returns to visit Thalantyr and of course, gets ambushed by another group of bounty hunters led by a man called Molkar. Max immediately casts cloudkill on them and the entire group falls dead to the ground, which in contrast to the previous battle was remarkably easy.

Posted Image

Archaeological Site

Max encounters and helps an archaeologist but shortly after gets attacked by a spooky apparition called Doomsayer, who seemed to be immune to anything that Max threw at him so he had to get a little creative in order to defeat him. Max decided to use a combination of Mirror Image and Fireshield against Doomsayer, with the idea being that the creature ends up killing himself from Fireshield while Max absorbs his blows with Mirror Image, but also throws a stab at him here and there with the help of True Strike. The plan worked to great effect and the powerful apparition was eventually killed.

Posted Image

Ogre's Reach

Max decided to help a pretty girl "gib some gibberlings" and was soon absolutely swarmed by the little buggers who just kept coming at him out of nowhere. After he ran out of skull traps to cast he put on his newly-found gnomish boots that made him immune to web/grease/entangle effects and casted web on himself. The gibberlings easily got caught in the web wave after wave while Max stabbed them one at a time with his venomous dagger. Later on, Max encountered a group of ogres who instantly died at the first sniff of his deadly cloud, which was rapidly becoming his favorite spell.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Gnoll Stronghold

Max mostly used the same tactic on the numerous groups of gnolls throughout the area, which was either Web or Grease combined with the Gnomish Boots, along with the occasional cloudkill and skull trap. He also found a tome and saved a girl so it was a pretty good day.

Firewine Bridge

Max ran into a couple of desert trolls here so he turned them into squirrels before finishing them off, which was his preferred way of dealing with the pesky creatures. While resting at night Max was interrupted by undead monsters he hasn't seen before, a Greater Ghoul and a Zombie Lord. The ghoul was very fast but died to magic easily while the zombie lord seemed to be mostly immune to it, but he did get caught in a web and killed off. Later on Max encountered a very powerful ogre mage named Kahrk who saved against every disabling spell that Max threw at him, so he called his pet shadows to help him out. Kahrk focused the shadows with everything he had but he couldn't finish them off because they were immune to normal weapons, and once Kahrk was out of spells Max emerged from the shadows to rejoin the fight and started casting every damaging spell he had at him. Soon enough, Max was also out of spells to cast and had to whip out 4 more damaging spells from his scroll case, which he was saving for a rainy day, but it was worth it as the ogre mage finally fell dead to the ground leaving Max victorious after a very drawn out battle.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Firewine Ruins

Max entered the ruins and once again summoned his shadows to help him explore the dark corridors. They ran into a large number of kobolds who were killed off with ease, but later on they stumbled upon an ogre mage who was accompanied by a mage called Lendarn and some bodyguard ogrillons. Lendarn casted web at the approaching shadows but hilariously got caught in it himself along with the ogre mage. So Max said why not, and casted a web of his own and went in to finish them off with his dagger, also finding a scroll of Fireball in the process. Max is absolutely loving his gnomish boots, they are extremely useful whenever Grease or Web are involved.

Posted Image

Mutamin's Garden

Max encounters a strange gnome with a lot of pet basilisks around him, and not wanting to end up just another statue in this madman's garden he protects himself against petrification before engaging them. He throws a couple of fireballs their way and finishes off the wounded basilisks with his dagger. Shortly after, Max threw some more fireballs around, this time aimed at a hostile group of adventurers. He also ran into a mighty Skeleton Warrior who was near immune to magic, but to his own surprise he was able to melee him very successfully when fully buffed, with the help of True Strike and a few invisible attacks of course.

Ulcaster School

Max walks into a Wraith at night, an undead creature equipped with high level spells who also summons ogres to his aid, so Max keeps his distance and throws 4 fireballs their way, but the tough Wraith survives and was eventually killed off with the help of web. Later on Max runs into an Orc Mage who also seemed to be packing higher level spells but he too falls prey to web and gets stabbed to death, along with an Orc Priest shortly after. But the very next Orc Priest that Max runs into instantly casts Free Action and Blade Barrier which surprisingly counters the "web him and stab him" tactic, so Max turns him into a squirrel instead and finishes him off from afar with fireballs and magic missiles. Before entering the Ulcaster ruins Max gets attacked by a tough skeleton warrior named Icharyd so he buffs up and is able to melee him successfully, but all of a sudden the day turns into night and instead of dying the undead creature fully heals and becomes more powerful with the help of his god, while Max starts to repeatedly get hit by lightning and all of his buffs disappear. So he drinks a potion of absorption to survive the lightning which also helps against Icharyd's flail and is able to melee the persistent skeleton once again with the help of a few health potions.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Ulcaster Ruins

Within the ruins Max first runs into a Mustard Jelly that once again gets killed with the help of sunstone bullets and a sling. Then he finds a bunch of mummies and manages to easily melee them, albeit after some buffing up. And finally, in the deepest and darkest corner of the ruins Max finds the Wolf of Ulcaster himself followed by a dozen dread wolves. A very tough battle followed but was made easier with the help of shadows and some fireballs aimed at the heart of the bloodthirsty wolfpack. The dark wolf had some fear spells of his own but eventually died too after a number of magic missiles were thrown his way.

Posted Image

The East Wood

Max runs into a hostile group of mages who were all dressed in red and gets attacked on sight, so he throws a couple of fireballs among them until they were literally toasted. Throughout the area Max finds various types of spiders, some of them very scary looking too who also had some magic resists but they all fell in the end nevertheless.

Larswood

In this area Max encounters a whole army of goblins who were easily killed with fireballs and cloudkill. He also finds about 30 wolves and about a dozen bandits, along with a couple of crazy druids who all perish to his high damaging area of effect spells.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Peldvale

Not much was going on in this area, Max found some bandits and local wildlife but the highlight was definitely running into a black panther at night time.

Bandit Camp

So Max finally found the hidden bandit camp which contained dozens of bandits and mercenaries who swarmed him on sight. He used cloudkill and fireballs to dispatch most of them and picked off any remaining stragglers with his dagger. For tougher foes like Taugosz Khosann and Garclax he used polymorph to render them harmless before finishing them off with his dagger.

Posted Image

Cloakwood Lodge

Max saved a guy from some very pissed off druids who easily went down to some fireballs along with their dire leopard summons. Later on Max witnessed a brown bear killing two nearby squirrels and thought it would be funny if he turned the bear into a squirrel as well before killing him, and he was right, it really was funny.

Cloakwood Nest

Max agreed to help some poor guy find his missing brother and in the process cleared the entire area of a major spider infestation, along with a spider nest which he burned to the ground with fireballs. The missing brother was recovered, but unfortunately didn't manage to survive his own encounter with the deadly spiders.

Cloakwood Druids

Max encountered some very rude shadow druids so he decided to teach them a lesson in manners, especially the archdruid Amarande who was hiding out in a tree house. The old treehugger summoned a couple of his friends along with a Fire Elemental and some leopards, so Max called up his shadows as well to join him in the fight. The archdruid was put to sleep with the help of Greater Malison while the fiery elemental was absolutely pummeling the shadow summons. So when the druids were out of the picture Max focused his attention on the elemental with a few Lightning spells, which only left the leopards who were killed at the very end with the help of Grease.

Max - lvl 11 elven Mage (part 9/9)

Handicaps - solo, no wands, no protection scrolls, no running from fights

Random Cloakwood Encounter

Well, the day when Max's carelessness finally cost him his life has arrived. He got randomly ambushed by a couple of wyverns and spiders deep inside cloakwood and even though he thought it would be an easy fight, the gods had other plans. Due to his own overconfidence and carelessness he got hit by a giant spider and somehow got instantly stunned on the spot and then killed. The "Free Action" icon that Max had on him was from his Gnomish Boots which only protected him against web/grease/entangle effects, so he was still vulnerable to any other types of stuns and holds. Had he known that these giant spiders could stun its victims he would have easily kept his distance, but he didn't so he payed the ultimate price for his own ignorance.

Dammit, was really enjoying this run :crying:
Sorry to disappoint, I am just waaay too careless in my runs and I always think I'm invincible for some reason heh, I'm my own worst enemy.

@Serg - Thanks, was doing really good but it's always the easy fights that get me. :D

Sorry to hear that Bruce. Are you sure he was stunned - the wyvern poison repeats so rapidly that it can restrict movement.

I'm back with another human stalker at 60fps. 70 minutes to warm up so not quite up with Grond0. Candlekeep, Marl, Firebead, Brage, Samuel, Joia, Mirianne, charisma tome, Shoal, basilisks, Mutamin, Kirian - with Korax sidling over. All rolls so far have been 11-13.

13 more minutes see Mulahey backstabbed twice, six sirines and three flesh golems for another level (7), haven't taken that yet as heroism is active and want to see what the roll is before using the bodily health tome.

@ussnorway - Actually Max was immune to webs and grease ever since he picked up the Gnomish Boots, and he was using grease and web himself throughout his run anyway.

@Gate70 - Yeah, definitely stunned. Replayed it to be sure.

@Grond0 - The free action icon was from the Gnomish Boots and it's misleading because it only protects against Web/Grease/Entangle. So all types of stuns and holds do get through despite the icon. The item itself however is perfectly fine and works as intended.

Hmm, so I repeated that battle and it wasn't the wyvern who stunned me but the giant spider instead, I was stunned (without the stun icon) for as long as I was poisoned. I checked it out with Near Infinity and it turns out that the giant spiders from random encounters are a bit tougher than the usual ones :/ The default ones have poison and webs but these guys have a "hold creature" effect built in their attacks as well. Wow what a lame way to die :(

Hard luck Bruce, but it was a good effort.

I can't remember which version of the SCS spiders you have.  The later ones cast webs at you individually, so it does sound like that's what got you.  I agree it seems a bit harsh as you would have expected your boots to protect against that, but that's perhaps the danger on relying on mod-added equipmentPosted Image.

Edit: from your description it sounds like the spiders have a hold effect added to their attacks as well.  I've never come across that. I would normally protect against their webs using free action, so it's possible I have just not noticed that, although I would have expected it to trigger on some occasions, e.g. when my Wrecking Crew of dwarven fighters were making their way through the Cloakwood.

Chud the stalker does another 1h12 (2h35 total, it's ticking away). His final 2 levels were 7hp apiece, 99 with the tome.

Nimbu is backstabbed, Tranzig chunked. Ardenor meleed and Taugosz starts with backstabs, gets an arrow of biting and a final backstab. Venkt and his gang are meleed then Drasus gets a few arrows of biting followed by melee. is boots allow Chud the chance to use more arrows on Kysus / Rezdan then backstab Genthore into submission.

Davaeorn is meleed (2nd hit of 32 through his mirrors chunks him), then his battle horrors are backstabbed.

All the remaining tomes outside Candlekeep are grabbed, including one from Durlags Tower. The helm and cloak of Balduran complement the Eagle Bow and Ring of Protection +2. Strength, heroism and speed are added to protections from magic and poison - Zhalimar Cloudewulfe and his gang are obliterated then Candlekeep tombs are looted. The doppelgangers are killed but Prat is left to his own devices before two greater basilisks are cleared on the way out.

Chud nails Sarevok in 31 minutes so 3 hours 6 minutes total.

Angelo almost gets Chud - down to about 30hp. Semaj and Angelo are killed first, Tazok after he is drawn out and then Sarevok is badly wounded by arrows before Chud moves in for melee (Sarevok almost forced a retreat).
Posted Image

(Rahvin's gang and Tarnesh added after Sarevok, pantaloons, ring and helm taken to Amn)

180 kills - Angelo. ** 2 weapon style. Started with ** long sword and ** short bow. Added ** katana.

Dragonslayer finished the citadel. His experience was up to 250,000, but due to those horible undead it is now back to about 100,000. Still, with all the equipment the party now has, the final battle should be an anticlimax. Hope I'm not tempting fate there.

Have decided that doing DSoSC with a mage in BGT, you should end up ultra-powerful as you will still know the high level spells in the mod. That's if you survive!!! It's a hard mod with those undead!

So did the modded Un-dead drain his experience away or do I detect the fickle hand of fate?

The undead drained his experience away.

At least I think they did. I know that they drain experience and that there's no way of getting it back as in BG2.

I also found that the raise dead spell doesn't work! At least when I needed it, was able to return to a temple.

Another plus is a number of tomes.

Current Stats:

Str 19, Dex 19, Con 19, Int 13, Wis 17, Cha 18. Exp 105,291.

EDIT

No worries at the final battle. Only needed my thief.

Final experience 112,666

If anyone else tries ToSC make sure that you have more wands of monster summoning than you think you need.

Sleep is often highly dangerous so getting spells that way is often not an option. Summons help protect against level drain, at least they do in vanilla. SCS might be a different story.

Not that much less than the ToSC experience cap, so quite happy with the final result.

Not enough activity here. Despite the burden of RL, which is unpredictable and sometimes tragic, and occasionally serves up changes we are not ready for, I'm going to push Lauren back into action soon to do my part for this epic epic epic thread.

Tragedy? Or a temporary reprieve? Only time will tell. Apologies for the delay. And thanks for sticking around.

I just tried a run through with a Xan look-alike.

Thought I was doing well enough to take on Tarnesh. I wasn't!
Was protected from fear, so tried two blindness spells and a sleep spell. He saved against ALL of them. :(

Dunderhead the dwarven barbarian started as he meant to go on - trouncing everything that stood in his way. Four ettercaps did the same to him when he discovered the hard way that being enraged doesn't help when you entangle yourself in a Cloakwood trap. No poison, just 81hp of damage before he could get free. What a to-do.

Fortunately his non-identical twin brother Dunderfoot learnt from this foolish error and collected 7 tomes (no visit to Durlags Tower), the helm of Balduran, ring of Koveras and golden pantaloons. With 95hp at level 8 he was almost caught out by Slythe - an invisibility potion and an earlier than planned application of  the end-game buffs turned the tables. With 10 turns of magic protection he raced to the coronation and managed to save both dukes.

Arrows of dispelling > ice > acid turned Sarevok into a near-dead pincushion and with no sign of Angelo, Semaj or Tazok there was time to finish Sarevok off with long swords.

Thankfully this means the third twin (Dunderbutt) doesn't have to make an appearance.

 & a post-script when I belatedly checked to make sure dunder wasn't too rude a word. Some definitions seem quite apt for a rowdy dwarven barbarian;
- Dregs of sugar cane used to make rum.
- A noise like thunder.

Dunderhead can mean a stupid person. Dunderfoot appears to not be used. Dunderbutt seems to appear as an urban dictionary entry.

Chopper a female dwarven fighter enters the arena. Her name is because of her favoured weapon, the axe. Perhaps she'll change it in due time to Chopper Wyrmslayer or something similar. :)

Str 18, Dex 17, Con 19, Int 15, Wis 15, Cha 2.

After heading north and helping a priestess, she headed south to Nashkel and west to the gnoll fortress, though she only visited the southern area of the fortress. There the goblin shaman hurt her a lot, but by only taking the goblins on a few at a time, she survived.

She tried to help the dryad, but those who were upsetting her wouldn't talk, presumably because of the low charisma.

She did help a boy find Rufie however and also helped Prism against Greywolf.

Rouster - dwarven swashbuckler

After doing just a bit of MP for a while now, I thought I'd have another attempt at getting a swashbuckler through the trilogy in my standard BGT installation.

Rather than doing my typical after-action summary report the next morning, I thought I would do brief real-time updates for this run.

So here's Rouster newly created in Candlekeep.
