Really nice writing Gate70, looking forward to reading more letters from Nashkel Times' (shortest?) angriest reader.

@ USSNorway: Thank you, I was unaware of that. Perhaps I should get Edwin instead? Or just install the mod that allows them to fight but never to leave?

Isaac the Terrible, lvl 1 CN Sorcerer

"Instructed by Gorion to buy what items he would need on his one-way journey, our young protagonist took this clear indication that he was no longer welcome not as a learning moment, but rather, as an opportunity to pilfer what items he could find unattended in Winthrop's inn. Here, he met a young lady in distress, who told him she had recently cut off her fiancée's  arm..."

Image IPB

"Visibly shaken by this gruesome tale, Isaac did not respond well when Winthrop cracked another of his lame jokes."

Image IPB

"After clearing up this minor understanding, Isaac browsed Winthrop's wares for items he could use on his travels. Knowing little of weapons and arms, he decided to buy some random things, just to be able to show Gorion he had listened to his instructions."

Following this, Isaac performed the usual round of Candlekeep, helped Sir Trun come to terms with his lost arm (mini quests and encounters mod), got nearly one-shot by Shanks, cried on the shoulder of a monk, met Imoen who begged him to let her come along on his journey and finally returned to the inn to rest. That evening, he spoke to Gorion and they departed.

 Caerlyn (F/M)

Beregost: Given Caerlyn was a multiclass I decided to complete the Beregost missions with the current party (Caerlyn, Vicky, Monty & Xzar) rather than add Kagain and dilute the XP gain.

To take out the duplicious Silke Caerlyn equipped two longswords and did the talking while the other three ensured no lightning bolts were let off. Vicky's Command Word was very helpful as always and ensured an easy win. Silke's magic quarterstaff will also do as a blunt option for Dorn when he later joins the party.

In dealing with the spider infestation Caerlyn drew them outside the house and then held them at the barrels outside so he only faced one at a time while the others assisted with missile fire. Possibly a little risky but with plate armour from the Flaming Fist who assailed Vicky and the extra hitpoints from his familiar Caerlyn held up fine and didn't get poisoned.

Defused a potential fight in Feldposts Inn and brought the text to the mage from Candlekeep residing in the house opposite before recruiting my favourate Dwarf and slaying the assassin loitering in Beregost. Neera was also rescued for the gem bag and her staff provided enough cash to buy Kagain's +1 Battle Axe before we left.

North: Headed north to complete Kagain's quest and again to FAI to cash in on the Spider clearance. By this point one of my pet Zhents started mumbling about Nashkall so a journey south was on the cards!

Sir
I have made enquiries about how my life story is making headline news on page 18 and I insist you stop this despicable behaviour of tapping my pigeons. I was not even aware I had pigeons, other than for lunch.

Your story of how I crawled out of Nashkel Mine bruised and beaten is naught but a hollow tale. True, I may have tried to rest several times and been repeatedly attacked by kobolds but I swallowed my pride (and all 15 blue potions) to continue to the root of the mine. There I found a half-orc cleric called Mulahey and in the darkness I accidentally activated a kai attack instead of my greenstone amulet. For a moment I thought all was lost but a rapid left-right with my longswords (courtesy of Greywolf and Neville) had him in 3 pieces on the floor. There were two more potions in a nearby chest and that was enough for me to leave the mine. Crawl - I think not!

Anyway, if you must know I then headed back to Nashkel only for Nimbul to attack me. Another kai 1-2 scared him right out of his boots, but the same cannot be said for Tranzig of Beregost. No sir, he ran downstairs like a lily-livered dandy and I knew to fight him in the main bar would scare everybody so I agreed to let him go in return for information. He mis-understood the question about tapping pigeons and said he wanted no part in this un-natural behaviour; which is more than can be said of you.

No doubt the leaders of the bandit camp are writing to you also. Their lies will eventually come to light, for this purpose I am enclosing a picture of me with Taugosz Khosann, or what is left of him - that's right, just his equipment. By the time you receive this missive I will have visited his superiors in the largest of the tents.
Image IPB

btw I read your article on holidays and would suggest you update it. After entering the aformentioned sandcastle building competition at the Sword Coast resort I was mortified to find jealousy surface in the form of green-eyed monsters (*) and stamp on my construction. A mighty tussle ensued and I may have accidentally killed them all.

* : Monsters may have been green-eyed, or they may have been blue skinned sirines with their fleshy golem buddies.

Sir
How dare you insinuate my upbringing was badly lacking. I'll have you know I thought the world of my foster-father and losing him in an ambush was a turning point in my life. I was so scared that the bears weren't the only ones poo'ing in the woods that night.

Anyway, attached is my entry for your poetry competition. It's an ode to Raemon and his bandit pals. I'm trying to improve my writing skills, something you are clearly not self-conscious of.

"Spend a pleasant weekend back to basics" your nature article states. Have you been to Cloakwood recently?? I'm only alive because I can run faster than the huge spiders, ettercaps, wyverns and druids. Even with a potion of freedom to regulate my speed.

Then there is your business section. Since when do abandoned mines have a group of mercenaries guarding them. Do you not do research any more. The two guards at the entrance were bad enough so I hurled a throwing axe at that fella Drasus but he's a dodgy character and raced towards me. I took a few wounds before chunking him then tried his boots on for size. Genthore was next, then their two mages joined them.

OK Mr Editor, explain why I'm featured on the sports page. You know, the one at the back. Your underground pigeons need to pay more attention, they missed Hareishan helping me out with a lightning bolt as I cut through the hail of arrows shot by her defenders. Fair play though, you captured my battle against Davaeorn reasonably well - even to the point of it being shown as a tag team event where I took the battle horrors out one at a time before going in for the kill. Nothing like fair play really.

 Coreranger Update 2
Coreranger - level 4 ranger, 42 HP
Misty - level 4 fighter, 38 HP
Forrest - level 3 mage/level 4 thief, 18 HP

Coreranger and gang have made good progress so far. Most of the southernmost areas are cleared, except for the Nashkel Mines. For the most part, Coreranger tanks with Misty and Forrest assisting with their bows. For more difficult fights, Forrest casts sleep and blindness. In ambushes, Forrest runs around in fear (he can't take much hurt), with Coreranger and Misty getting into melee.

I tried a new strategy at the Xvart Village, not sure why I didn't do this before. Coreranger charmed Ursa the Bear, then moved Ursa by Borda - Borda talked to Coreranger then Coreranger moved away. The party then assisted with their range weapons with Ursa taking all the magic missiles. This worked perfectly - Borda was defeated and it only took a single arrow to take our Ursa herself. Fun times.
Image IPB

We will probably investigate the Nashkel Mines soon, as soon as we get the Necklace of missiles.

EDIT: Nashkel Mines cleared. Cleared it the standard way - do fireball to clear most of Mulahey's minions, then concentrated attacks on Mulahey - he couldn't get a spell off.

Coreranger the half-elf ranger - FINAL Update

The team took on the Amazon assassins - I thought that web would be enough to sway the battle in our favor. Well, I was partially right - it would have been IF I let the enemies see Misty first. However, I foolishly led the way and was held and poisoned and that was that. Back to the ole' drawing board...

Please remove me from your mailing list and return any monies outstanding. I'm now reading the Baldur's Gate Big Gossip instead, could you forward the enclosed copy to your editorial staff so they have something to aspire to. Don't try to curse me for my change of allegiance as the cloak of Balduran will protect me from such atrocities.

If you ever look for a better job in the city beware of sharing a meal with the locals. Only yesterday I was poisoned by a brigand called Marek and you wouldn't believe the lengths I had to go to when tracking down a cure. Also, don't believe the streets here are paved in gold. They are a reddish brown outside the Iron Throne HQ for example and nobody seems keen to tell my why.

Although I've only just got familiar with the city I am told I won't learn any more unless I head over to Amn instead, and the owner of the Sorcerous Sundries store has sold me a few scrolls and potions I really didn't need. The exorbitant cost of these items has left me down to my last 50k of gold pieces so you can see why I can't afford to keep you lot in jobs by continuing my subs.

You won't be hearing from me again, good riddance and :blows raspberry:

I did a solo assassin not to long ago (he snuffed it after level 5). Not sure what to do next. I will either do a class I've never played before (not many of those, but there are a few), or Russell III and band of paladins. I will probably take a break to recover, then will charge ahead with the new run.

A, uh, doppelganger appears to have cancelled my subscription to your fine publication in an attempt to fob me off with inferior news reporting. Do not be taken in. I appreciate you may have believed the worst of me so let me provide you with a few scoops to confirm my sincerity.

The Iron Throne HQ. A hateful place, guarded by mercenaries. I slew one group myself but even with many buffs I had to use a potion of regeneration mid battle and for a moment seriously considered fleeing. Rest assured this group will cause no further trouble but do not visit the place in case reinforcements arrive.

Candlekeep has changed for the worse too. No longer a place of safety, it has been dragged backwards by no less than Koveras (whoever he is). I failed to find Rieltar but was framed for his murder. I know your search for justice would have started a petition in my name but there is no need as the library cell has no roof. It took a little while for me to bounce on the bed until I could clear the wall but I'm nothing if not persistent.

The way out led through crypts and I accidentally broke 3 of them open before "Elminster" and "Gorion" turned into flesh eating monsters. I killed them just as my potion of regeneration wore off so I knew my oil of speed was about to wear off too. It was still active as I ran into Prat and his gang but I slipped a ring of free action on before killing their darty dwarf. An archer and mage later I dealt with Prat and picked their corpses of loot.

Anyway, must dash as I rested longer than intended and I need to get back to the city. Did you know there's going to be a coronation?

Political correspondent, Nashkel Times.
You seem unaware of the assassins hiding out at the Undercellar. One remains if you wish to corroborate my statement, the other was foolish enough to attack me as I buffed for the ceremony. All that was left was his sword and a couple of letters.

Your view of the coronation at the duchal palace must have been obscured but fortunately for me Duke Belt cast power word : auto pause on enemy death. The guards did their part and your disdain at their efforts is pitiful. Despite the thick of battle, I grabbed a brief moments lull to capture evidence of their efforts.
Image IPB

Thanks to their endeavours both dukes survived and I got to hurl a magical axe at Sarevok but he dodged it each time before teleporting away. Duke Belt sent me after him and I fought my way through a thieves maze. I glugged a regenerative potion as a doom guard approached then felled a second moments later. Two skeleton warriors were killed after a lightning bolt and fireball were unleashed on them, and then I sneaked to the south of Rahvin and into the abandoned temple.

Sarevok dodged another axe so I switched to melee and cast kai. I had to run, noting how he was barely wounded (and wishing I had bothered returning to Kirian for her girdle). After glugging some healing potions I returned and injured him further before moving away again. A couple of feints saw further minor damage then I had to re-apply potions of speed and invulnerability.

A second kai almost had Sarevok dead but I had to move away and glug more potions. I failed to spot the regeneration had worn off until after my next attack. As I moved away again Sarevok staggered and I saw that the last attack had mortally wounded him. He stood there defiantly but a second or two later his body gave up the struggle and blood spurted out of numerous wounds. The day was mine, albeit thanks to the 8 healing potions.
Image IPB

No doubt you will weasel my words and land me in further trouble. Fie to you sir.

Dear Political Correspondent
I note that your publication has been regularly used of late by a publicity seeker. I would warn you that this man is notorious for sending in stories that demonstrate his courage and skill and suggest that you let another newspaper handle these for a while.
p.s. as you said about me some time ago - does the man never sleep?!

To all affiliated news agencies.
It has come to our attention that we have been the unwitting stage for an act of shameless self-promotion and have destroyed a missive about his final exploits in the Sword Coast involving mercenaries (Rahvin), books of the Two Towers (Ramazith and Durlag) and de-bagging a nobleman of his pantaloons.

Do not be duped by this character and under no circumstances publish any account about his killing of 340 men, women and most notably a greater basilisk.

For the removal of doubt please find enclosed a means to identify this glory hunter.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 25 - (update 1)
Tensor, human blade (Grond0) & Rache, human blade (Gate70)

Our previous run with a pair of berserkers was pretty successful, so we thought we would have another go at twinning.  This time we will (hopefully) see how well blades can perform in melee later on in BG2.
Image IPB
Image IPB
Although created independently, these two shape up pretty well as a brother and sister pairing.

Although they are ultimately expected to become primarily melee characters, the early stages of BG1 with poor armour, no helmet and low HPs is not a comfortable environment for sword users!  Hence, so far a large majority of fighting has been done using bows, with the odd supporting spell thrown in.

As normal the first destination after Candlekeep was Shoal - her XP was enough to take both blades to level 3.  The first moment of concern was when Tensor was too slow to start running after Greywolf's arrival and took 14 damage - a critical hit would have killed her.

Much of the Cloudpeaks was then explored, providing Tensor with some bracers courtesy of Zal & Vax.  The main concentration after that was on doing reputation quests, but Rache has recently acquired his own bracers - inherited from Meilum.  The only other dangerous incident was in a bandit ambush.  Both characters started running immediately and took potions to shrug off initial damage.  However, a second round of attacks targeted Tensor on her way to the edge of the map.  Two hit for criticals, taking her down to a level that one more hit could kill her; there was one further attack before she could run away, but fortunately that one missed (it was a good job she was actually wearing armour on that transition - I by no means always remember to do that when travelling).
Image IPB

Looting the ankheg nest under invisibility (Tensor and Rache both failed their initial attempts to learn this, but Tensor succeeded with the last of the 3 scrolls bought at High Hedge) and returning Farmer Brun his son got the duo to reputation 20.  At that point they bought the Green Amulet and Cloak of Displacement at Ulgoth's Beard.  From there they have gone straight to the basilisk area, where they should be able to pick up a couple more levels each.

Stats:
Tensor, blade L5, 30 HPs, 63 kills
Rache, blade L5, 32 HPs, 40 kills
Tensor has the advantage of a long bow over Rache's short bow and has also had the bracers of archery on for quite a while - Rache has only recently acquired the bracers of weapon expertise.

Russell III Update:

I've decided what my next run will be. It going another all-paladin group (6-man). However, I'm currently training for the Oregon Chess Open, I want to do well. So I will devote a lot more time on the run after that (Labor Day Week-end). If I'm needing a break from Training I might work on Russell III's run before that. Best of luck to the ongoing runs.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 25 - (update 2)
Tensor, human blade (Grond0) & Rache, human blade (Gate70)

The bard duet is still going strong, with Daveorn down and no deaths yet.

The session started with Tensor reading his green scroll before shooting the basilisks - the bards getting to L5 there.  Mutamin lag-jumped to manage to talk to Rache, which allowed him the opportunity for a horror spell - but Rache saved.  He also pumped Rache full of acid arrows, but got one too many arrows in return before he could finish the job.  Kirian's party may have looked challenging, but were no match for a cloudkill scroll.

Next was the Nashkel mine.  There was a reminder there of the need to keep vigilant against the danger of criticals as one kobold arrow hit Tensor for a maximum 16, but the duet were able to rest without being ambushed and moved on to Mulahey.  The original intention was to blind him before he could talk, but that failed.  A horror was rather more successful - scaring Mulahey as well as his kobold supporters and the cleric was blinded as well while Rache occupied the skeletons.  Back at Nashkel Tensor tried to hand in Mulahey's symbol, only to find that she had somehow managed to pick up his shield instead.  There was a later attempt to get the letters from the mine, but they had already evaporated, so no reward for Mulahey.

After Nimbul was blinded and shot the duet went back in search of the amazons - web and stinking cloud made them easy victims.  Tranzig was sent into a spin on the way to the bandit camp.  The outside bandits were shot down before the duet went invisible to go inside.  The aim was to render all the inhabitants there helpless before attacking, but Raemon was able to take advantage of MP display differences to spot Rache.  That meant Tensor had to cast web and stinking cloud while Rache dodged first Raemon and then Britik round the edge of the effect - risky, but it worked.  Level 6 was obtained as a result.

Before going to the Cloakwood the Green amulet and area spells (including a first use of skull trap) proved too much for the sirenes.  The golems in the cave were rapidly shot down by arrows of biting under offensive spin.  Melicamp was also successfully revived on the way to the Cloakwood.

The first encounter in the Cloakwood was with Seniyad.  She got a call lightning away - prompting Tensor to make a first use of her wand of fire.  The main bit of work in the woods though was getting Spiders Bane.  A couple more wand uses helped wear down the inhabitants of Centeol's lair.  At the Cloakwood mine a barrage of 2 x stinking cloud and 2 x web proved too much for the party there - none of them managing to take any defensive action.  Hareishan was dodged invisibly on the way down to Daveorn.  There was a nasty moment there when Tensor failed to reserve invisibilies before trying to rest - continued failures would have allowed the guards to wear down the duet, but they managed to rest on about the 4th attempt and had no problems in finishing off the battle horrors (skull trap + magic missilies) and Daveorn after that.

Stats:
Tensor, blade L8, 43 HPs, 213 kills
Rache, blade L8, 46 HPs, 112 kills
Tensor took a major advantage in that session.  That was partly the result of the connection speed favouring her, but she was also taking the aggressive route of wearing the bracers of archery nearly all the time.  By contrast Rache was in a more defensive mode - using AC7 bracers rather than Meilum's.

Russell III's Tale:

Gorion has been real agitated of late, almost like he expects trouble. My 5 paladin friends insist on escorting me and staying close - if I do end up leaving Candlekeep they want to leave with me. All our martial skills are excellent, except for Paja. However, we all do lousy in our studies. However, my friends can swing their swords hard and shoot their bows and slings well and we know right from wrong, so I believe in my friends. Besides, if a difficult problem comes up that only a mind can solve, that's why we have Paja - she's as smart as any human mage, and as wise as any human cleric.

Regardless, we did a few chores around Candlekeep - the chores themselves were rather unremarkable. We were able to get splint mail and chain mail for Hanna and Misty, but the rest of us had to settle for studded leater. We all had a melee weapon, and everyone except the front-liners had ranged weapons and ammo, so we were all good there. As it turned out, two foolish assassins tried to hurt me. They died instantly, so it wasn't a very good choice by them.

Eventually we tell Gorion we are ready and set off. Gorion was talking privately with me, with my friends trailing behind us when Gorion and I were ambushed by a man in heavy armor, escorted by a cleric I think and two ogres. I wanted to help Gorion, but I knew I was out matched, so fled per Gorion's order. I hid in the bushes and watched helplessly as Gorion fought valiantly but still ended up cut down. The man in heavy armor searched a bit and left the area. By then, my friends caught up with me, and we buried Gorion in the field with a stone marker, with his name etched with Misty's long sword. No doubt this man in heavy armor will commit other evil as well, so my friends and I resolved to both stop him and get justice for Gorion's murder. Imoen stopped by and said she would help, but we can't feed that many mouths so turned down her help and left her by the road - she's a resourceful girl, she can get into Candlekeep again if she wanted. We encountered two suspicious travelers by the road - yes detect evil shows them as clearly evil - they were slain.

Paja suggested we head East, so we did. We encountered some hapless xvarts and two dire wolves. A dire wolf got a big bite out of Misty, so she had to use one of our few heal poitons. The dire wolves were nevertheless slain soon enough. Paja says with her lousy dexterity, she needs help against arrows and she says there's an ogre nearby that has something that will help her. So we follow her lead and sure enough an ogre was encountered. Our Holy Wrath killed the ogre almost instantly and Paja says yes, one belt does indeed help her against arrows and daggers.

Gorion's letter said to head to FAI. We don't need more traveling companions, but perhaps something there will aid us. Indeed, Misty's sharp eyes noted a magical ring in a hole in the ground - we can' t use, but selling us might help our equipment situation.

But first we see a mage approach with an evil grin. Misty cast resist fear, Paja cast protection from evil 10' (via scroll) and I cast True Seeing. Yes it was a mage assassin - since his mirror images were dispelled, he fell almost instantly. Some magic scrolls we can't use which we will sell and a bounty notice - some one wants my head! I'm glad I have my friends with me.

There were some hobgoblins around the Inn (not sure why the guards didn't deal with them) - they were dispatched quickly. An orange ring with a name on it was found - we returned to FAI and yes Joia appreciated her ring back. She will spread a good word of us. In the Inn itself, we sold our mass of junk, and were able to afford plate mail for everyone except Paja (who can't wear it anyways), and even a magical +1 large shield, and of course more ammo. From the nearby FAI Temple we also procured lots of heal potions and one antidote for everyone except Misty, who can't be poisoned.

Time to head south. Paja suggested that we need more battle experience, so we cleared High Hedge of the hostile enemies here. We also went south for a moment and found a talking chicken and returned to High Hedge. Yes, Thalantyr did manage to save Melicamp. Not only that, clearing the last of the enemies clearly made everyone tougher, so Paja's call was a good one, as usual.

We then head to Beregost. Some minor things done here - we heard chirpping from a house and looked inside and it was full of large spiders! The ranged paladins devestated these beasts, so they were of little trouble. We also encountered a bard who wanted us to kill innocents - we were having none of it, and slayed her instead. This also got a magical staff for Forrest, so turned out OK after all. Nearby ran into yet another assassin gunning for me named Karlat - however, he had tough time hitting us, and our bowmen eventually destroyed him.

We travel farther south and run into two ogrillions - they didn't live long, but a letter they had we returned to the owner and got a magical protection ring, so that was fortunate. We encountered a flaming fist, and told him we weren't bandits and he believed us - I am glad, don't want to have to cut down the Law.

We travel farther south, per Paja's suggestion and ran into some hobgoblins, kobolds and human bandits - they were no match at all, and like most battles the ranged people devastate the opponents. In Nashkel itself found some ankheg armor - Paja begged to use it, with her poor dexterity and also she isn't strong enough to wear full plate or plate mail - I agreed. We encountered a rather annoying citizen named Noober - we let him finish his rant and moved on. Oublek mistook us for Greywolf, but we of course told him his mistake - he said he would spread the word about us - good, good.

The last incident of the day was yet another assassin in the Nashkel Inn, looks like a cleric. We did protection from evil then began the battle. She was very hard to hit, however, we did hit a her a few times and managed to interrupt some of her spells. Neira didn't manage to cast anything except to cast hold person on Hanna - but Hanna is immune to hold spells, and Neira could do nothing else before she was slain.

It's scary having all these assasins come after me, but I feel safe with my friends. Armored fiend, your time will come...
