Now at 56hp and level 6 with 50449xp. Scrolls of protection from petrification / poison plus a potion of defence (courtesy of Silke) and heroism are enough to kill the various basilisks before a kai two-shots Mutamin A necklace of missiles wounds Lindin, the second misses (they only moved slightly but it was enough).
A brief peek allowed a retreat before Lindin reacted and a second necklace missile killed Lindin. A greenstone amulet charge was then used to kill Kirian as a cave bear and two flinds joined in, then the fight continued as Peter cast entangle. The kill order was Peter > Baerin > flind > bear > flind. (Only 1 hit on this entire map, a super measly 4hp critical from the cave bear which could have done much worse).
First real risk taken (Mutamin tackled without greenstone amulet or similar). Must try harder to stop the gung-ho.

Quetzal is off to a good start. That's been helped by the fact that she has not yet had a single surge, despite casting lots of spells.
After Candlekeep Quetzal & Quasi (the quasit) combined to beat up Xzar & Montaron. Against Shoal Quasi had an initial bite, but then concentrated on trolling Shoal round, while Quetzal darted her (after failing with an initial blind) - level 3.
In Beregost Quetzal quickly dealt with Firebead & Marl. Silke & Karlat were helpless after being blinded, while some spiders and ogrillons all took a nap - level 4.
After returning Mirianne's letter and Zhurlong's boots Quetzal headed north, via a sleeping ogre to the FAI. After picking up the ring of wizardry Quetzal darted some hobgoblins and returned Joia's ring before Tarnesh was blinded at the second attempt. Landrin's goods were then swapped for some pantaloons.
Arriving safely in Nashkel Quetzal talked to Noober and then was ready for a sleep - awakening with a new Bhaal healing ability.
Stats:
Quetzal, Wild Mage L4, 31 HPs (incl. 12 from familiar), kills 21

At the Carnival Oopah & Vitiare provided a bit of spending money. Quetzal picked up the shield amulet and protection from petrification green scroll, but decided against the necklace of missiles. Sleep overpowered hunger for some xvarts attacking a cow before Meilum was blinded at the second attempt. His bracers more than double the efficiency of dart users, so were very welcome.
A basilisk ambushed the Q's on the way to Beregost Temple, which inspired Quetzal to seek out their home area and exterminate the lot of them (Quasi staying in the backpack during this period). Korax helped out against Mutamin and the party, but things proved a bit trickier than I hoped against the party! I thought Kirian was out of sight range of Quasi, but she activated and Baerin started shooting before I was prepared. A critical and a follow-up arrow killed Quasi - Quetzal had the opportunity to run at that point, but tried to take revenge ... and failed.

I believe I have the knowledge to get a kensai through but need to hone my execution.
Agreed: I think you're definitely capable of getting one through.
Throwing axes seem far too slow (at least in my install) so my plan is to get the dwarven thrower and various throwing daggers (boomerang, Firetooth). If I get to K'logoroth I'll be seeing if that is any better.
Yes. The thrown weapons can do outstanding damage but they have serious usability issues in comparison to true missle weapons. They're also not nearly as versatile. Giving up metal melee weapons isn't really a big deal to me: giving up missle weapons (and shields) would hurt. I'd personally find life as a single class kensai tougher than life as a beastmaster.
Anyhoo: Best of luck!

One thing for certain, it's going to be a long time until I play assassin again. The 15 pts. to distribute for thief skills just stinks, give me an unkitted thief any day. My guy is level 8, he puts all his points in HIS and moving silently and also wears Shadow Armor and stealth boots and he still manages to routinely fail to hide.

@Gate: take care of your new kensai - there are not much anagrams left to name them, aren't they?
@Corey & Alesia: I apologize if I was not absolutely specific about Wand' of Fire abilities - that was quite obvious to me...

Try & try again Grond0?
Must be nearing the end of anagrams Serg. Troublesome times. After saying I must stop taking risks I did Nashkel mine without buffs, other than a greenstone amulet against Mulahey. Kairx (which could be dwarf-short for Kai received) saved against rigid thinking and hold person anyway and Mulahey was dead before he could test a third spell against the amulet.
Risk 2, Nimbul. Kairx missed with a kai as Nimbul mirrored. Plan was to stick around for a moment or two then run and activate the shield amulet (possibly quicker than greenstone and makes Nimbul unable to injure with magic) but an offhand critical went straight through the mirrors.
Tranzig took two kai hits before chunking with a third blow. Kairx used the cloak / boots / girdle combination to clear out various bandit archers and hobgoblins. Ardenor Crush was an easy kill, Taugosz Khosann was not. Kairx resorted to hurling throwing axes but there were several occasions where an axe aimed at full range failed to release before Taugosz reached melee range. Kairx healed at one point, only for Taugosz to hit and see 4hp remain. A few minutes later the armoured bandit gurgled his last but Kairx is thinking of switching from axe (*) to non proficient daggers for any further ranged combat.
This left him with a full inventory and approaching the next level last night, so he can either return to the camp or nip over to the coast to speak to Sil about bodily health.

Also ignore hide in shadows and focus on move silently, believe the two are averaged for initial hide but only move silently is used for something else. There have been various discussions on this but I can't remember the full detail.
IIRC Move Silently defines the gap between the moment HiS failed and the moment your char became fully visible - the higher MS score the longer you'll stay invisible after HiS failed. It also defines the probability of being detected while moving hidden (that's obvious of course).

Kairx chunked Davaeorn, looted the tower of Ramazith and stepped into the abode of Degrodel. Two doom guards, a battle horror and two invisible stalkers later he briefly let down his guard and fell to a third stalker (probably a critical as 30ish hp went in one go).

As a memorial to Kairx I thought I would have a quick go with a kensai. Despite his portrait Doppel is actually using daggers rather than axes. That does reduce the effectiveness of his kai ability, but he's still able to do decent damage - here's an early example on Montaron.
Doppel's had no real problems so far and has just reached level 7 in the Cloakwood. The vast majority of his kills have been using throwing daggers, but he's used a necklace of fireballs a couple of times as well. The only real mistake so far was double-clicking on the nobleman, resulting in him taking back the pantaloons (if only briefly).

The dwarven kensai crop continues. Axrik looks suspiciously like Redsai in the party run. He has read the script about safety and may understand it by Amn if he ever gets there. Just arrived at the bandit camp.
Level 7, 80hp. 144 kills, greater basilisk.
Starting (current) weapon proficiencies : **(*) long sword, (*) dagger, ** 2 weapon style.
Scrolls used so far : Protection from Petrification. Basilisks.
Necklaces / amulets used so far : 2 charges of the necklace of missiles. Kirian and Peter toasted.
Risks so far : Saved against rigid thinking cast by Mulahey.
Notable 1 shots : Tranzig (38).
Throw and run : Shoal.
Melee > pain > throw and run : Neville, Greywolf.
Potions;
Stone giant, heroism, defence. Basilisks > Mutamin > Kirian.
Cloud giant (ankheg nest loot on the run), clarity, invulnerabilty, speed. Sirines > Sil > Flesh golems.
A few healing potions (5 or so).

A potion of freedom is used in Cloakwood, picking up a potion of invulnerability from the enemy of an enemy.
An oil of fiery burning throws Drasus and his gang together, one necklace of missile blast kills Kysus and a second kills Rezdan. Drasus and Genthore are both badly wounded so Axrik kills them without buffing.
The obligatory inventory run to Beregost sees Axrik return unbuffed. Several guards are killed in this state and Axrik is badly wounded (29/80hp) by the time he reaches a magic missile trap.
Frost giant strength > absorbtion > invulnerability > speed > regeneration are used and a short while later Axrik is mostly healed. He switches to the boots of avoidance and springs a lightning trap at the fourth attempt before dragging it into the next room. A couple of guards are killed by the bolt and Axrik has killed two more by the time she (edit, Hareishan) casts a second lightning bolt. He cuts her down and mops up the guards, grabbing her potion of explosions and switching back to the boots of speed.
The next area sees 12-15 guards killed a room at a time then the final guard is killed. Axrik swaps to the golden girdle then throws the potion of explosions, wounding Davaeorn enough for him to investigate. The mage manages to teleport once and casts a lightning bolt before Axrik kills him and turns to the sole battle horror (rats) before quickly killing it too.
(almost at level 8 now)

Corthief II and gang (Khalid, Shar-Teel, Imoen, Garrick, Tiax) are just about to leave the City of Baldur's Gate. They are standing in front of the Iron Throne HQ building. Battles here have been smooth, funnest one was the one with the 5 ogre mages:

The battle with Drassus and buddies was also smooth - 2x web and 2x fireball and the opponents were unable to resist us.

Doppel became a victim of my desire to finish as quickly as possible. Approaching the Cloakwood Mine he was short of resources - 1 invisibility potion, 1 magic blocking and 1 potion of speed being the main assets. Doppel successfully pulled Drasus away using the potion of speed and stuck him full of throwing daggers before he ran past the rest of the party and down into the mine. He was able to kill the initial guards in Hareishan's area before running past the rest and then carrying on straight across the next level and down to Daveorn. I was hoping that with his speed he would have lost defenders, but 7 or 8 guards followed him belatedly. With very little room to move he got trapped and had to use the potion of invisibility to get out and finish off the guards.
Now wounded and out of healing potions there seemed little choice but to attempt a frontal assault on Daveorn (I had intended to pull the battle horrors away and ditch them with the potion of invisibility). The magic blocking potion took him across the traps and he survived Daveorn's spell assault, but it proved difficult to make quick progress against his defences. With time ticking away I waited a fraction of a second too long to get another throwing dagger away and one of the battle horror swords licked out across Doppel's throat.

Corthief and gang (Shar-Teel, Khalid, Imoen, Garrick, Tiax) had little trouble either in Candlekeep Crypts or exposing Sarevok in the City of Baldur's Gate. No trouble in maze either, though most important tactic here was Imoen going invisible via spell and de-trapping the 4 traps in front of the two skelatal warriors. For the Undercity, Corthief II led his party the long way to the Temple of Bhaal. Tamako nowhere in sight, still waiting for us near the flaming fist barracks, but we never showed.
Sarevok Battle:
Another insane battle. Took a long time real-time (15-20 minutes), I can't even remember everything I did. But will reconstruct best I could.
Preparation: Very little this time - since Semaj destroys all our buffs, didn't want to spend 15 minutes buffing just to have it dispelled. We did do potion of magic shielding on Corthief II, fire resistance for those without and group haste. Buffless, I really wasn't sure my party could take down Sarevok, so as a standby measure, all haste potions and potions of invisibility were on Corthief, as well as the haste boots. This turned out to be important, as I did in fact have to go to this backup plan.
Start of Battle: Imoen moved to the left and cast two confusions out of sight - enemies saved. Perhaps Greater Malison might have made that play work, but she didn't know that. Even though there was little chance of success, Imoen also fired off stinking cloud and web out of sight. This proved to be important, as this delayed Angelo's entry to the battle until much later. Imoen finally fired off a fireball and retreated to the party.
Enemy responds: Sarevok is the first to show himself. Shar-Teel and Khalid pound on him, and we get a round of magic missiles from Imoen and Garrick on Sarevok. Throughout the battle Tiax spammed his wand of heavens.
Semaj appears - Corthief II uses arrows of dispelling on him, Imoen and Garrick spam magic missiles on Semaj, while the others keep the pressure on Sarevok - even this early stage, Shar-Teel is near death. Well we don't kill Semaj, while Semaj manages to dispel all our buffs, re-buffs himself (uh, oh) and successfully gets a chaos off on the party!
Things are now really bad, right about here Khalid dies. Only Tiax and Corthief II, and Garrick made their saves. Corthief gets his distance, seeing what's about to come - Tiax and Garrick don't live long, Since Garrick was dying anyways he tried a web on himself to perhaps trap Sarevok, Semaj and Tazok - don't think he gets it off.
Well Garrick does die, and Corthief goes invisible via potion (his HIS failed). The enemies then converge on Imoen - suprisingly she last a long time with the chaos, as Garrick re-buffed with haste before he was killed. Corthief tries to take potshots on Sarevok, but very risky business with all his pals still in one piece. Finally Semaj is separated and Corthief II has a clear bead on Semaj - Corthief uses dispelling arrows (which connect)then arrows of detionation to finish Semaj - things are still dire.

Imoen finally dies - in all of Corthief's attempts to take potshots are Sarevok, Angelo finally appeared and his arrows hurt Sarevok - I risk an invis potion and see if Sarevok gets mad at Angelo - nope not this time. Angelo still has most of his exploding arrows, so I decide to use my staff to try to kill him quickly - I didn't realize I was right behind him and got a massive critical of 126 damage and Angelo is killed with one shot - good news! Forgot to mention Imoen triggered 3 battle horrors helping Sarevok as well.

With the ranged enemies defeated, things are finally starting to look better. I'm glad Corthief spent so many points in move silently and hiding in shadows, it paid off here. Corthief tried many potshots with his +2 arrows and eagle bow, but despite near death Sarevok still kicking.

Corthief II eventually decides maybe Sarevok will die quicker with a martial staff in his back - yes he does!

Corthief II moves on to Amn - surprisingly he got his max level of the game from killing Sarevok...

Given his name (German for double) it seemed appropriate to give Doppel one more chance.
This time I've been taking slightly longer in order to try and ensure a safe progression. However, it's still only taken two hours game play so far to:
- maximise his reputation
- buy everything in the game he wants
- get past Daveorn (this time) and on into the City
No particular mistakes or close calls in the run so far.
Stats:
Doppel, kensai L7, 71 HPs, kills 139
HPs are exactly average to date - though currently depressed slightly as a result of just having put on the Claw of Kazgoroth.

In the City Doppel went after the tomes. A cleric refused to give up one of them, but Doppel wasn't taking no for an answer!
A critical miss with his Dagger of Venom meant Doppel had to use one of his magic blocking potions to stay safe against Marek.
After investigating the Iron Throne invisibly it was back to Candlekeep. A green scroll and cloud giant strength / DUHM was used for looting the tombs (killing the spiders got Doppel his final level) before he was away again.
Back in the City Dopple potioned up to quickly take down Slythe and move straight on to the Palace. Dopple tried to damage the dopplegangers without killing them in order to manage the XP he earned; no trouble in winning the fight and both dukes survived.
After an invisible trip through the maze, dodging the traps, Dopple arrived at the temple. As usual Sarevok chased Doppel away from his gang and Dopple engaged in melee. After taking 2 hits he retreated and healed while throwing daggers. That was done twice more, which didn't take long, before Sarevok had had enough.
With potions to spare Doppel killed the skeleton warriors in the maze to get up to the XP cap before reporting to Duke Belt for duty in Athkatla.

Axrik has rescued Liia and Belt, grabbed all the magical tomes, notched up 313 kills (Angelo) and dealt with Sarevok.

Some of this spare gear was shared with Rahvin on the way out...
& off to Amn where he grabs a long sword and attempts to offhand a katana. The golden pantaloons have been retrieved but the ring of Koveras isn't with them.
