The only difficulty for me is how to spread one RoP+2 and one CoP+2 among six party members...:)

Yuppers.

I was commenting from a solo perspective- mostly because this discussion was stimulated by Grond0's solo druid.

In party play -where the Bracers of AC 3 and protection items could very well suit another character better- Aeger's Hide and ankheg plate both becomes excellent choices for druids.

OK. With one less druid in the world I've got a gap in my schedule this afternoon. I had not intended to do any more swashbuckling this holiday, but I've still got a starting save for Hardy, so will give him one more chance to strut his stuff.

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

Half an hour in and he's killed Shoal, Meilum and all the basilisks + Mutamin (Kirian's party is next).  Also explored Beregost and Nashkel.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L6, 38 HPs, 23 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 2)

An hour in and he's pinched Greywolf's sword, seen off Mulahey and is about to try and steal the secrets of the bandit camp from under the noses of the leaders.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L7, 44 HPs, 57 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 3)

An hour and a half in and he's used one potion of invisibility to get out of the bandit camp and another to get through the Cloakwood web traps.  Drasus has been trapped and Hardy used stealth to get down to Daveorn.  Potions of absorption and magic blocking allowed him to melee the mage.  Tenya's got her bowl back and Hardy has just arrived in Baldur's Gate.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L7, 44 HPs, 68 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 4)

Two hours in and he's collected the tomes in Baldur's Gate, investigated the Iron Throne and been sent back to Candlekeep.  He's just completed looting the tombs there and left - that took a while as he's relying on his own stealth, which isn't very good.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L8, 51 HPs, 74 kills

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 5)

Two and a half hours in and he's got the tomes from Durlag's Tower and the pirate cave (not bothering with charisma tome), learnt the Bhaal powers he wanted (CLW, LMD, 2x horror, VT & DUMH) and done 11 reputation quests to get reputation up to 20.  Also collected the pantaloons and bought light crossbow of speed and Claw of Kazgoroth.  He's now back in the City ready for the final push.

Hardy - swashbuckler, L8, 51 HPs, 74 kills

Good luck Grond0! Here's hoping your swashbuckler, doesn't, er, choke at the end.

Thanks Corey - no choking this time!

Hardy - dwarf swashbuckler (update 6)

A final half hour session saw Hardy buy equipment, trap Slythe (and 1 doppleganger), pull the remaining dopplegangers upstairs for disposal and pass invisibly through the maze using green scroll protection.

At the temple Hardy pulled out Sarevok and started taking potions once he was sure no-one else was coming.  After 7 potions of perception he became pretty good at hiding and after a while chasing round and round a pillar Sarevok had had enough.

Hardy reported back to Duke Belt for assignment to Amn.

Winthrop sighs. "Not another bluddy dwarf kensai with a pair of longswords. Look pal, you ought to be locked up for your own protection but I'll give you this quilted woodsmans coat so you're always in your own padded cell. Now get out of here, and make sure you take good case of your father - he's not so fast on his feet nowadays.

Mini update. About to go into Nashkel mine but the usual suspects (Shoal, Neville, Greywolf, Sil, Mutamin and Kirian) are all dead. One close encounter when the Nester ankheg landed a 32 + 4 hit, and one mistake when a second greenstone charge was used against Baerin instead of a second shield amulet.

Level 7, 80hp.

Xarik is demonstrating the stubborn dwarf kensai traits, refusing to use any buffs in Nashkel mine. He retreats to a corner while fighting Mulahey and is hit with rigid thinking as the cleric panics. 5 kobolds injure him but die quickly once he recovers.

Xarik kills off the nearby skeletons and heads outside to locate Mulahey. Another hit sees the cleric terribly wounded but his concentration is impeccable and Xarik is faced with having to retreat. Instead he calculates either his dwarven resistance or constitution will see him through.

Held. Mulahey casts spiritual hammer and starts whacking away (63/80hp at the point of being held). The half-orc hits again and again, all the time Xarik is whispering "Take your best shot, I'm still going to slice you limb from limb". Mulahey redoubles his efforts and returns the taunts "You'll be a bloody pulp on the floor before the hold wears off". Blow after blow land and Xarik starts to fear he will indeed be flat-packed.

The hold expires and a fraction of a second later so does Mulahey.

Nimbul is also tackled without the use of either amulet (either is an assured victory). His mirror images fire as Xarik misses, then curses as the dwarf refuses to be scared off. Nimbul has no time to panic as his life, wand and arms flash before his eyes.

Tarnesh and Ardenor Crush are sliced apart with ease. Taugosz Khosan falls in 2 rounds (far easier than normal) and then Venkt has a spell disrupted before a second hit sees him do an Obi-Wan robe trick.

Hakt, Raemon and Britik are all killed and the only damage taken inside the tent is a minor shock (6) from a lightning trap. Cloakwood is next, Drasus proving painful (9 healing potions and still badly wounded). Genthore is easier, then Kysus and Rezdan perform their own robe tricks.

Buffs are applied after a magic missile trap, and Hareishan is no match for the hasted kensai. Nor is a battle horror or a second, and Davaeorn only manages to teleport once before his plans fall apart as do his extremities.

On to the city, and a quick scoot around sees Ramazith added to the killboard, and a final level reached (87hp - same as last run).

Edit, think this is the sequence: Kaxir > Karix > Raxik > Rixak > Kairx > Axrik > Xarik . Plenty more fish food in the sea.

Belt is less than pleased. Sure, Sarevok and all his henchmen are dead, plus Rahvin and his gang. Oh, and Zhalimar Cloudewulfe's crew. Xarik asks what the matter is.

"I've spent months wooing Liia" Belt whines "now I don't know which bits are her and which are doppelganger so it's going to be a messy resurrection and I'll always harbour doubts of who I'd be romancing in future. Why don't you eff off to Amn".

281 kills, Angelo. Reputation 10 (didn't want to do Marek's poison quest so just "grabbed" the final wisdom tome and sent the priest for higher orders). **(**) long sword, ** 2 weapon style.

Baldur's gate has been on the back burner for a coupla months, and between the steam summer sale and my new determination to get city of abandoned ships running, I can't guarantee this will improve, but I've finally decided to ditch my last save, which I tend to load up, look at, then shut down and fire up Fallout new Vegas instead.

I was helped by finding a portrait which looks pretty much like Firefly's Zoe Washburne. So I rolled up a FMT, and started the basic quests. This is a solo no-reload, with minimal buggering around, I'll detour for great gear or huge XP, but otherwise I'm sneaking about a lot.

I should also mention that I hacked this character mercilessly, she has stats all 18, except the 19 dex & 17 con of an elf. I also gave her a pearly white ioun stone for 2HP/min regeneration. On the other hand this is BG trilogy with scs & scs2 installed, so I don't really expect to survive, and if I do, it's probably because she's so overpowered that I'll lose interest right after I see how trilogy handles the transition from BG1 to BG2.

Image IPB

Even with scs, enemy AI is really dismal. Whenever a thief sees 'quaffs healing potion', they chuckle quietly to themselves. Unless they're held, then they don't. But they would.

Yup, well this went about as you'd expect it to. Zoe had just got to levels 5/5/6, and took on Peter's lot to finish off the area. Peter was the last mob left worth killing. I think I may need some sort of strategy refinement here. Chuckle. I said that as if I HAD a strategy other than stab & hit the shadows.

Condolences. It's good to see you back in action though Potty1!

(Btw. After seeing your first screenshot I thought: "Huh? Maybe I should remind him to pick up the Ring of Free Action or in the alternative some potions of freedom before facing clerics?" But then I said "Nah. He'll figure that out on his own: I'm sure he won't make the same mistake twice.")

I agree with Alesia, I'm sure you'll figure something out Potty - condolences. By the way, my thief characters always use necklace of missiles from the shadows against that group - this enables me to defeat them buffless (e.g., from the shadows, slightly out of sight, I fire necklace and immediately hide - the enemies have no clue where I am. No idea if that's viable in SCS though, so do whatever you think is best.).

It's just carelessness. Only Peter and the mage were left, I had a skull trap memorised, but went for a backstab on the mage. Actually I don't even need to fight this group, they've got nothing I want. So, back to Candlekeep with exactly the same character.

I'm a long way from the ring of free action, but a couple of potions sounds like a good investment, cos Mulaney would have been next on the agenda, and he's a cleric too. Plus the amazon ambush, which has two clerics, is probably another fight I should avoid but probably wont.

Understood. That can happen.

You could pickpocket Dushai- that or mug her.

(I typically refrain from doing this on RP grounds, but it is an option.)

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 - (update 1)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

After the magic and mystery of the blades run we thought we would have a try at something a bit different.  Pure thief classes have only been used once in our runs up to this point.  Initially that probably reflected that they're not an easy class to use in MP, but I think we've now had sufficient practice in working together to make a thief combination practicalImage IPB.

Thus far things have progressed pretty well.  Andal's been throwing his special traps around to good effect, taking out all the xvarts near Hulrik's cow with a single trap for instance.  Where things survive traps they tend to fall over pretty quickly as a result of poisoned darts.  The effectiveness of the combination has meant that we've done a few encounters that would normally be left until later, e.g. Silke.

The general route taken has been pretty familiar - Shoal, Beregost, Nashkel, Greywolf, Meilum, FAI, Cloudpeaks and basilisk area.  In the latter stages of that Andal has become confident enough to start backstabbing as well as setting traps.  Here, Vax should really have checked on the status of his companion before threatening us with Zal's prowess with darts.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L6, 37 HPs, 32 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L6, 33 HPs, 45 kills, 0 deaths

OK back to where I was, and Zoe-clone has had her revenge on Peter.

I initiated the fight by accident, but stealthed away, set a trap, and ditched the skull trap in favour of memorising .. hold person! I then had a snooze, woke and set two more traps (50% in traps, lucky or what), although in fact they're still all there, unused. I lead in with stinky cloud, which took out Kirian & Peter. Hold person immobilised the mage, so I backstabbed the remaining member. Next I backstabbed Peter, who was right on the edge of the cloud. The cloud wore off, so Kirian attacked me, but I ignored him and took out the mage in straight melee, plus one magic missile. Kirian was hacked a bit, then blinded, and backstabbed.

On my way home I picked up some gauntlets of weapon skill, this fight was also straight melee, because he walks right up to you to initiate conversation, and then I think he slugged a potion of speed. No worries, 5* in long swords mean I was the better swordsbeing.

Because I really would like to do this all again, I may see how I fair against the vampiric wolves on the way home. Or not. They also have some sort of hold attack, so no.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 - (update 2)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

The session started with an assault on the Nashkel mine.  Most of the kobolds were bypassed on the way to Mulahey.  He avoided a backstab, but was wounded by a trap and finished off with poisoned darts.

Outside one of the Amazons wounded Stiel with a critical for 16 and a follow-up hit before he could retreat.  He also got caught by a hold person while moving away, but that was no problem as both the cleric and the archer were dead before the spell arrived.

A soldier managed to pinch the XP for killing Nimbul, but there were no interventions on Tranzig as the duo made their way to the bandit camp.  One of the bandits wounded Andal badly (without ever looking like killing him) before Taugosz tried to follow through a line of traps - failing to make it to the end.  Inside the tent a special trap was triggered when a necklace fireball annoyed the inhabitants - Britik and Raemon survived, but not for long.

In the Cloakwood Seniyad survived the pre-laid traps, but poisoned darts took her down before she could call any lightning.  Other encounters were avoided on the way to the mine (though Andal wasn't impressed when Stiel triggered a trap by using stealth rather than waiting for it to be disarmed).  There, several special traps were thrown near the party in the hope they would all go hostile together after talking, but only Drasus was damaged.  However, as the party chased after Andal they encountered more traps - only Genthore surviving to be darted.

The only near death experience of the run so far came against Hareishan.  Initially she was bypassed in stealth, but we belatedly decided to talk to the slave and that alerted the guards.  Andal was back in stealth and tried throwing a special trap at Hareishan, but didn't realised he'd failed and got spotted in the process.  The resulting lightning bolt bounced at least twice around the cell he was in, but somehow avoided frying him.  Hareishan died of a backstab and the duo then sneaked down to Daveorn.  His traps were disarmed and he was then backstabbed by both thieves; he frantically teleported away - straight on top of a fatal trap.  A mustard jelly chased Andal towards a dead-end, but he threw his sword over the wall to Stiel for a fatal backstab.

Flooding the mine got the duo's reputation to 20 and they bought a poisoned dagger for Stiel and the Shadow Armor for Andal.

On the way to the City the duo robbed some ankhegs, returned a body to Farmer Brun and killed some fishermen (and Tenya who initially tried to give up, but got annoyed again by a dart already en route).

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L7, 41 HPs, 81 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L7, 38 HPs, 99 kills, 0 deaths

Fool - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

Following on from Hardy's demise his older brother Fool is entering the challenge.  True to his name Fool is going to make things a bit harder for himself by not allowing the use of any consumables or charged items.  Passive magic is allowed, so for instance Fool could equip Arbane to protect against hold person, although he can't make use of Arbane's haste effect.

The plus side of those restrictions is that it will significantly reduce the amount of time putting scrolls into inventory that will never be used.  I don't think there are many places where the restriction should be too much of a problem, although I suspect the ring of Gaxx will not be possible to get, which will be sadly missed.

Thus far Fool has done most of my normal early game encounters - the exception being the basilisk area (no green scroll protection).  He's just reached L6 and is off to the Nashkel mine.

Fool - dwarf swashbuckler (update 2)

Fool eventually lived up to his name (or perhaps I should change mine!).

He steathed through the Nashkel mine and shot Mulahey before he could talk.  Nimbul and Tranzig walked into traps.

He trapped everything at the bandit camp (relying on stealth would have been risky).  I realised I'd sold Mulahey's boots and thought the chest was too much of a risk to open without them (no skill points put into find traps so far), so went to buy them back before coming back to open the chest.

Bought the Claw of Kazgoroth before going to the Cloakwood.  Fool set the traps off using stealth and shot all the ettercaps and huge spiders.  He was less than 200 XP away from level 7, so I deliberately moved backwards and forwards several times trying to get another huge spider to spawn.  It declined to do so, so eventually I went looking for the sword spider to use that instead.  It survived a couple of traps and chased Fool to the edge of the map.  There I decided, for the first time in the game, to let him try and finish something off in melee (as the spider was near death anyway).  He had no luck at all, while the spider hit 3 times - the third being a critical taking Fool down to 8 HPs.  He tried to turn and run the few steps to the edge of the map - but didn't make it.
