Berk - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

I didn't keep a starting save for Fool, so quickly rerolled a clone - Berk.  He's off to a great start, with 24 HPs from Shoal (maximum for the 3 levels gained).  Maybe that will provide me with some incentive to keep him safe, though he's operating under the same restrictions as Fool, i.e. only passive magic allowed (I'm counting magical ammunition as passive by the way).

The intention is for Berk to take a similar route through the game to Fool, though he's already gone to the FAI to get the ring of wizardry and used that to buy the light crossbow of speed (Fool only bought that after visiting the bandit camp).  He's just arrived in Nashkel.

Berk - dwarf swashbuckler (update 2)

Berk has now got up to the same stage as Fool - with the exception that he killed the sword spiderImage IPB.  HPs for the last 3 levels have been poor, though he's still a bit above average thanks to his perfect start.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 - (3rd and final update)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

That felt like a decent attempt, but unfortunately proved unsuccessful in the end.

In the city the thieves had some fun initially with the mages in sorcerous sundries.  Then they picked up the tomes along with the Cloak of Balduran.  There was a slight oddity in the Iron Throne when Andal spent a while setting traps in the area (resting on the roof), but when he revealed himself the traps had just disappeared without activating at all (I don't think it's the case there, but it was as though the area itself had changed - as it does after destroying the Shadow Altar in Umar Hills for instance).

Before going to Candlekeep a quick tour of the countryside produced the last 2 tomes and a ring of fire resistance.  At Candlekeep the tombs were robbed and the greater doppleganger and his cronies taught not to impersonate our friends.  On the way out Andal laid down some traps for Prat & co, but they seemed to do very little.  However, Andal followed the attack in himself, while Stiel tried to run in and out firing poisoned darts from stealth.  The second time he attempted this his target (Bor) moved away as he was in the act of firing - that caused him to move forward himself and become visible.  Before I could react Bor had thrown a dart of his own, stunning Stiel - he died a few seconds later.

Berk - dwarf swashbuckler (3rd and final update - again)

Berk ran through the remainder of the Cloakwood to the mine.  A series of traps and stealth shots to pull enemies into them accounted for Drasus and his party.

As with the original, Berk had not been in trouble up to this point, but fell victim to a combination of bad luck and laziness.  After talking to Rill I wanted to rest before sneaking down to Daveorn.  I know it's only possible to do that safely by going all the way back to the entrance to that level, but tried resting a bit before that.  A group of guards appeared, and another, and another ... Each time Berk was being pushed further back towards where Rill was and eventually (after 6 or 7 failed attempts to rest) he tried doing so in one of the small storage rooms - where failure blocked him in.  A first use of his newly learned Bhaal horror power successfully dispersed enough guards that he was able to fight his way out of that trap and actually managed to try twice more to rest.  However, at this point the jig was definitely up.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 1)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

We decided to have another go with this pair to try and get them into BG2.  So far, so good, with the duo about to journey to the Bandit Camp.

The session started well when 2 levels from Shoal produced an extra 13 HPs each - or at least it did momentarily, as I did an area transition before Gate70 had finished allocating his skill points.  The autosave reset the random seed so that he only got 12 HPs on levelling up again; I will add the remaining HP through Shadowkeeper before our next session.

There were a few concerning incidents during the journey:
- our experience in MP has been that Landrin's spiders don't come out of their house.  This time they did (possibly because we were both in there at the same time) and blocked Stiel in.  He was poisoned while fighting his way out, but huge spider poison is fortunately not too deadly and a couple of healing potions kept him going.
- some traps were laid for ankhegs, but didn't work (perhaps they were treated as underground when they were set off) and there was a nervous moment before the duo got out of range.  We also found that the body of Farmer Brun's son had disappeared.  I think that was due to me taking things out of Andal's inventory to make room while he was putting others in from the ankhegs treasure store - that sort of action tends to cause problems in MP.
- Mulahey was allowed to get too close and talk and managed to confuse Stiel.  Fortunately he performed pretty sensibly while confused and managed to kill both a skeleton and Mulahey.
- against Sil and the sirenes it was Andal's turn to be confused.  Things looked a bit bleak when he wandered into a nest of carrion crawlers, but Stiel managed to kill a couple of them quite quickly with poisoned darts and lure the last one into chasing him rather than finishing its meal on Andal.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L7, 43 HPs, 54 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L7, 44 HPs, 61 kills, 0 deaths

Cool, I just searched who & where she is, I wasn't planning on heading to Ulgoth's beard until I needed level 4 spells, but that just changed. I thought the earliest ring was the one at the top of the iron throne.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

Immediately after Berk's death I tried rerolling a replacement character.  I was aiming to get one with the potential for maximum stats (requiring a total score of 92 for a dwarf).  That's not normally too hard, but proved difficult this time and it took several hours of rolling over a few sessions before Twerp arrived in the wee small hours this morning.

As with Berk, Twerp will be limited to his own abilities and passive magic items, i.e. only using things that act on being equipped rather than actively being used.  I don't think there's any reason why he couldn't go deep into ToB on that basis - other than user error of course!

In Candlekeep he immediately picked up a couple of levels by trapping Firebead.  Shoal provided another and talking to Marl got him to level 4.

Thanks Corey - so far so good.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 2)

Twerp has made good progress and has just reached level 8 by killing the sirenes (traps / stealth shots) and golems (+1 arrows) at the lighthouse area.  Mulahey, Nimbul and Tranzig are all history, but the bandit camp has not yet been depopulated.

The only significant error so far was that on initial arrival in Nashkel the local guards were not impressed to see such a despised specimen of dwarfdom arrive in their village.  Twerp went to save Hulrik's cow before returning, but the reputational damage had already been done, so he's had to be careful about his movements in Nashkel since then.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 2)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

The thieves made a mess of the bandit camp with multiple backstabs spiced with a few traps, although Andal did get damaged by several consecutive bandit arrows at one point. In the Cloakwood Seniyad was another trap victim, with a few ettercaps in the next area also finding that trapped feeling.  Andal experimented with more traps in the wyvern cave, but they didn't seem to do any damage and he took a bit more punishment himself while the duo ran the wyverns round to finish them off.

At the Mine Drasus & co were only annoyed by a single special trap before  Kysus was backstabbed and Drasus led into a group of back-up traps.  Rezdan then managed to hit Stiel with an acid arrow and LMD before Stiel successfully hid and took his backstab revenge - then came back to do the same to Genthore.

After sneaking down to Daveorn Andal successfully disabled the traps before setting some of his own at the point where Daveorn would teleport to.  The duo listened from well away to the brief screams of the mage.

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 3)

Twerp is still going strong and has just arrived in the big City.  I realised there that technically my restriction on only making use of passive magic should rule out reading the tomes, but decided to do so anyway (maybe they're not magic, but just really good examples of self-improvement handbooksImage IPB).

At the Bandit Camp traps and stealth proved far too much for the bandits and Twerp moved on to the Cloakwood.  He ran through there, using Dushai's ring to ignore the web traps.  At the mine I only intended to kill Drasus, but Genthore decided to stand on top of his body, guarding the boots of speed.  I pulled him into some remaining traps and finished him off with a couple of steath shots.  Then went back to Drasus - only to find that Rezdan moved onto his body as Twerp approached!  He tried a Bhaal horror: Rezdan saved, but, after a rest, he failed and walked into a couple of new traps.  Kysus was in his original position and left alone as Twerp moved into the mine and stealthed down to Daveorn.

After killing the guard Twerp set a couple of traps and tried to rest.  No luck in a dozen or so attempts and he ended up playing safe by going all the way up to the mine entrance.  Back again he had a bit more luck in resting and set 7 traps for Daveorn.  His mirrors prevented them from quite killing him, but a follow-up stealth shot did the job before a LMD could hit.

Twerp, swashbuckler L8, 45 HPs, 139 kills

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (update 4)

Twerp has revisited his old home in Candlekeep and is now preparing for his final battles in BG1.

I wanted to get Twerp's last level before going to Candlekeep (to ensure he could loot the tombs) so did a number of encounters I would not normally bother with in the city.
- sneaked some traps in among the mages in Sorcerous Sundries - the survivor cast horror, but not quick enough to catch Twerp in his race for the stairs.
- an ogre mage and a carrion crawler died together in a trap to get Twerp to level 9.
- Arkion died in a trap - as did Nemphre.  Reporting to Ordulinian provided a nice XP bonus.
- while doing the poison quest there were more traps for Jalantha, Marek and Ramazith.  Also returned a child's body to Tremain as well as picking up the Helm and Cloak of Balduran.  Intended to return some gauntlets to Noralee, but she wasn't interested in talking to a shady character.  Instead Twerp used stealth shots to pull a greater basilisk into some traps.
That lot got Twerp his last level so I didn't bother with the Seven Suns etc and just sneaked into the Iron Throne before reporting to Duke Eltan.

At Candlekeep Twerp robbed the tombs (sneaking past the phase spiders on the way).  I intended to just sneak out without fuss, but carelessly let stealth fail just before getting past the dopplegangers.  As a result Twerp was being chased by one of them and had just been spotted by Prat, so I was thankful he managed to hide here (putting his boots of stealth on again there for the first time in a long while).

Before returning to the City Twerp took a detour to Durlag's Tower to pick up the tome there.  The trap on it can't be disarmed, but I was pretty sure Twerp's save vs spell of 0 would keep him safe (and in the event MR from the cloak kicked in anyway).

Back in the City it was lucky that Twerp's got more money than he can use - he put some of the spare cash towards buying back the tome he had just sold instead of identifying it!

Stats:
Twerp, swashbuckler L10, 60 HPs, 165 kills

Twerp - dwarf swashbuckler (5th and final update)

When collecting the Cloak of Balduran Twerp had pre-laid 7 traps around where Slythe would appear.  Only 4 of them activated (I think some must have been too close to where Slythe and Krystin appeared and evaporated): those were sufficient to kill Krystin, but Twerp had to finish Slythe off using run and stealth attacks.

There were no risks taken at the palace, with the dopplegangers being pulled upstairs where dispelling arrows and lightning bolts made short work of them.

Stealthed through the maze, disarming the traps on the way, and on to the temple.  There Twerp disarmed the lightning traps, before setting 7 of his own.  Sarevok soon chased him into these and the 7th of the 13 dispelling arrows Twerp had on him slowed him down.  The traps only just got Sarevok to injured status, but a succession of stealth attacks round the pillars soon had him in trouble.  As Twerp's stealth is not very good (points mainly gone into find traps, open locks and set traps) he failed to hide quite often so was also shooting regularly at Sarevok - and it was a bolt of lightning that eventually convinced him to give up on his reign of terror.

Stats:
Twerp, swashbuckler L10, 60 HPs, 173 kills

Congratulations Grond0. Don't know if it works in your set up, but in mine Firebead must get raised by somebody for after killing him in Candlekeep, you can kill him again in Beregost. I did that using a blindness spell in a recent game.

Now sporting Dushai's ring, Zoe has rampaged across the sword coast laying waste to all in her path. I feel a bit guilty using it, before ghasts had to be painstakingly backstabbed and fled from, because held = death. Now they're free XP.

Anyway, I cleaned up the sirines, and got the CON tome. The flesh golems seemed bugged, after backstabbing them and running for a bit, I noticed they weren't following, so I just mowed all 3 down without taking a hit. I ran down to get the CHA tome, sorted the zombie cleric, and bought a robe of the archmagi.

I shot through the mines in about 15 minutes, a trap took out the skellies, and web stopped the kobolds while I hit Mulaney with sharp stuff. Thanks Dushai cheesiness. I had a snooze, then took out the amazons. Note I no longer backstab neutral people, generally I uncloak at the edge of visible range, talk, run if they're hostile, stealth, and return. For good measure I did the 3 tombs and the crazy slime wizard too.

Feeling confident, I decided to visit Durlag's tower. Just to get the tome, nothing stupid, because I haven't played downstairs for at least 5 years. The helmed horrors were treated to another cheesy tactic, I sneak up behind them, switch to the ankheg plate, and backstab before my stealth wears off.

I disarmed most of the traps, the tome trap got me, but I saved. Careless, but lucky. I had to use a scroll of anti-petrification for the 3 greater basilisks outside, because it wasn't memorised. The ghost at the top was one-shotted, a relief because I lost a character to him fairly recently.

Then, as I was leaving, I thought, let me just have a look downstairs. Two potions of perception and one of master thievery helped convince me. Then I walked over 3 traps in quick succession, and started rethinking. Fortunately they were all direct damage, a fireball, a lightning bolt, and some sort of druid lightning strike, so I slugged some healing potions & started being more careful. These flesh golems did hit back, and had really fast reactions, plus backstab doesn't work on golems, so I just used the plate armour and hit them. I was really nervous of the 3 greater doppelgangers, so I lead with a skull trap, and stealthed. I was glad to see they don't seem to regenerate, so I took them out using the plate and backstabs.

I gave the greed guardian the beljuril, the pride one seemed happy with whatever I'd done, and Love sees I have the wine, but Fear needs me to ring the gong, and the parts didn't assemble. I'm taking this as a sign to get out now.

So back to Nashkel, Nimbul's history, I had a sleep, Beregost awaits, followed by the bandit camp. Which is very nasty with scs. On the other hand, Zoe is pretty nasty too, FMT levels 7/7/8, 266k XP, so in 6k XP I get mage level 8. When do level 5 spells kick in? Cloudkill would make the bandit camp a doddle. Actually I have a spare cloudkill scroll ...

Yup, no way before the bandit camp, although I'll probably get it by the time I hit the Gate. I'm not very fond of the City itself, and I'm too nervous to do the werewolf or mage islands no-reload, so I'll probably stick to the main quest line from here on. I will of course collect the tomes, and Balduran's gear.

The bandit camp turned out to be a doddle. I snuck into the cave, cleared it, and had a sleep to refresh my spellbook and advance to nighttime. I snuck out, headed to the main tent, buffed in a corner, and talked to the prisoner.

Image IPB

Between all the letters pointing here, and the intel from the captive, I decided an attack on neutrals was justified, so I led with a skull trap. This was less effective than I expected, only one archer died. I really can't remember what I did next, but I suspect I cast emotion. Anyway I easily dispatched everyone, grabbed the loot, and headed outside to finish off the rest.

I started with a blindness to Taugosz, which failed, but it was just to draw their attention anyway. I ducked behind the yurt and stealthed, then watched every single enemy on the entire map collect where I had cast from. Perfect. Moving out of sight, I pulled out my spare cloudkill scroll, and dropped it on them. Also not as effective as I had hoped, but pretty effective nontheless. I finished of the two bandit group leaders, and started searching for Taugosz.

Eventually I headed into the yurt, and found him, along with about 10 archers. I droppped my second skull trap on them, again less than overwhelming, and they were angry, so I tried a glitterdust. Great. Mowed down a couple, but it wore off really quickly, and I was losing HP fast, so I ducked outside, backstabbed the first archer that followed, and meleed the second. I set a trap outside to simplify a repeat of this, and stealthed back in. Another blindness on Taugosz took, so I finished off the archers, and ended with a backstab.

Had a bit of a spending spree, bought the rogue armour and the poison dagger, loads of potions and ammo, scribed a full set of spells, and am still contemplating the claw of whatsisroth. Except I'd have to remove the super-cheesy Dushai's ring. I'll probably remove this anyway when I get boots of speed, but even then I'd rather have a +1 ring than a cursed claw, and the other ring of very many L1 spells never gets removed. Sold my trusty ankheg plate because I have Durlag's bronze plate. Typically I wear the archmagi robe, but the stealth armor & the full plate just give me other options. The cloakwood awaits.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (update 3)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

In the city the duo picked up the tomes - the Eagle Bow and a +2 ring coming along in the haul.  They also got the Cloak of Balduran and briefly returned to Beregost to get the Shadow Armour.

At Candlekeep there were no problems for Andal in robbing the tombs.  The first attempt with these characters ended at Prat; we agreed we should seek revenge rather than just sneak past.  The initial setup didn't quite go to plan as Andal was spotted by Prat before completing his trap laying (a multiplayer glitch there with the view on our two computers being slightly different).  However, he moved swiftly away and hid - Prat taking himself out of the combat by moving to where Andal had disappeared.  Andal backstabbed Bor, while Stiel did the same to Sakul to eliminate the main dangers and they were able to finish the other two off comfortably.

The green scroll from the Iron Throne allowed Stiel to attack the basilisks safely and the duo emerged into the open to consider their strategy for the final battles.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L8, 47 HPs, 90 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L8, 48 HPs, 108 kills, 0 deaths

I have been chased relentlessly by a Flaming Fist mercenary, my eyes burning in the daylight as I sought somewhere to hide. Then I saw them, a man dressed as a green beetle and a girl all in pink. Help me I cried, in the knowledge that they were more likely to hand me over or kill me themselves. I could go no further and sank to the ground.

The mercenary warned them off but the man stood his ground and asked what I had done to deserve death. He scowled as the mercenary turned my head so he could see my drow features and showed a look of disgust. Neither the mercenary nor I expected what happened next, a quarterstaff badly denting the helmet of my pursuer who staggered backwards trying to keep his feet. An arrow lodges into his shoulder, and another whistles past his ear.

I use the last of my energy to command the mercenary but we are unable to finish him off in the few moments respite; he cuts into and through my armour with his sword. I scream in pain and realise we will be unable to kill him before he kills me.

There is a small explosion and my vision disappears for several seconds. As it recovers I see the mercenary laid out on the floor and the girl is putting a magical wand away. I thank them both for their help, heal my wounds and turn to leave.

"I am Imoen and we have need of a cleric" says the girl "This mercenary may have thought we shared his prejudices but Vorle and I have been brought up better than that". She throws the plate armour to her companion and passes his to me when he has changed.

That night we share a meal and I discover Vorle has disgraced himself by breaking the only two handed sword in his home town, and half the realm. A nearby half ogre called Arghain decides to attack us at this point, surviving two commands but not the eventual flurry of arrows. Vorle picks up a magical sword and swears that future commands will not be so easily wasted.

With our meal interrupted Imoen suggests we head to an inn instead. I shudder at the thought but Vorle tells me not to worry and off we head. Imoen is scouting ahead and I share the company of my remaining companion, trying to comprehend the things he tells me of surfacer ways.

As we reach the inn my nerve buckles so I cast remove fear. The incantation draws unwanted attention and we find ourselves attacked by a mage. I cast command, the mage collapses and we ensure he won't rise again.

The inn is a friendly place and for the first time in too long I am able to almost relax. Two other adventurers try to introduce themselves to us by name-dropping someone called Gorion but Vorle is having none of it and bids them farewell. The female half elf quickly defaces a nearby bounty notice before throwing it at us and flouncing off. I stare at the artwork as her words ring in my ears "this was missing the voices of good and evil influencing your actions".
