Nobody is looking so I charm another creature onto the bridge then spook it into the water below (die cursed squirrel!) but it manages to scramble to the bank. Maybe I should try it with that kobold sneaking nearby or perhaps one of those children (enough! back to the task!) These three adventurers will have to do (despite their obvious inadequacies!)

"Ho good sir" (yes dolt! you!) "a job for you". The dolt stops and turns, before he can open his mouth the chatterbox beside him answers "blah blah blah" (I'm not listening wench!) "That's right, a job. There is... a... terrible.... evil.... a... witch. You must kill her... or... or..." (I will never pass the Red Wizard entrance if she lives!) "the lives of millions hang in the balance" (that's good! did I just make it up or have I heard it before!)

So it came to pass that I journeyed with the dolt, the chatterbox wench and a slovenly drow. Two half-ogres on a bridge dropped some strange gauntlets (mine! hands off!) then I convinced them that only a couple of gnolls were home (the rest are here obviously!) Dolt exceeded my expectations although he was badly injured at one point and the slovenly drow ran her hands up and down his wounds (they heal! I must learn that!)

Eventually my patience snaps and I fire a volley of magic missiles (one!) and the fortress is ours (mine! I have the deeds!) I shove the dolt down into a nearby pit and tell him to kill the witch (I'm going to pass! I'll be a real wizard!) He turns to protest but the witch goes hostile and he kills her (yes! yes! yes!)

"Well done, ah, charname... it's Simian isn't it?" (I'm not giving him anything! if I hang around long enough they will die and I can take something shiny from their remains!) "You have the use of my magic for one year, no more, no less" (I'm not going to commit to this! I won't even acknowledge to him that the witch is dead! No fixpack shall constrain me!)

I don't like the look on his face (I don't like him at all! who cares!) He's realised I have duped him (the work of a master puppeteer and he is such a... puppet!) "A girl in distress to the east" I shout "no time to continue our debate, we must go NOW" (how was I to know there really was a girl in need! note to self; ignore squirrels- cats are easier to drown!)

EDIT
Vorle looks at his journal. Somebody has been writing in it. Or doodling. They almost look like a series of letters but they are all joined up and hence incomprehensible to even the most learned of paladins, of which Vorle is not. He carefully stamps distinct letters to remind himself how Imoen died from a kobold attack and had to be raised at a temple, something which Edwin failed to even notice.

(edit, the abridged version. This girl can talk)

It feels strange to be alive again, the last I remember was trying to fend off a xvart with my shortbow in a dark wet and cold cave. I'm so proud of Vorle for getting me to a temple before it was too late. Anyway;

I don't get it. There we were, surrounded by bandits in a well orchestrated ambush when Edwin decides to cast armour. Serves him right to get an arrow in the arse but Viconia and I also got hit despite running. I'm the only one who had to drink a healing potion and Edwin casually saunters out of the ambush with his spell in tatters and only half his 6hp still in place.

I'd planned a really funny trick on Edwin, it was going to be sooo gigglesome. Right up until the point where Vorle decided he didn't like the girdle I gave him and swapped with Edwin. Vorle has received enough of my japes over the years to know immediately that I was involved, but I'd hidden before he she could cuff me.

Now we're in another dark wet and cold cave, only they have delusions of grandeur and call it Nashkel Mine. We've barely set off when Edwin runs out of throwing daggers - pfft what an adventurer he's turning out to be.We've returned a dagger to Miner Kylee and Viconia seems to be having trouble keeping her hands off Vorle(tte) in the dark - although she says it's purely medicinal when I tease her about it. Edwin is a laugh a minute, thinking his armour spell will protect him in melee against kobolds - why do I sense another temple visit is imminent?

I have to eat my words as we clear this level of the mine - Edwin using his lonely Magic Missile and three Larloch Minor Drains to kill four of the eight kobolds in our way. I might just sneak a peek at his spellbook when he's dozed off.

After a fitful night (or day) of rest fighting off four more kobolds, we wake up. I was going to write about finding and disarming my first trap but the area was strewn with human remains and a green ring; obviously another trap was horribly triggered with fatal results. I clear two more traps on a bridge as Vorle(tte) shields me from arrows - strangely happy as there is no way for an arrow to get him/her in the vulnerables! Plus his voice has feminised overnight (changed voice set until curse is removed).

Ugh. Two huge spiders. Vorle(tte) soon cuts their legs off and then there are more kobolds, including a commando. Vorle(tte) almost falls to this group but a potion followed by 2 cure light wounds and a lay on hands sees him/her have the last laugh.

I clear three more traps, getting good at this, and we continue to the next level of the mine. Another kobold commando wounds Vorle(tte) before we kill it and then we find the base of the mine. Inside are four kobolds and then a half-orc cleric called Mulahey. We lead him to the "pool of death" where Viconia commands him twice. With him defeated all that remains is for us to clear out his minions.  Two gray oozes are removed and then we rest before heading outside. Vorle(tte) is learning from Viconia, and is now able to cure light wounds twice a day.

Viconia silences four amazons, her experience as a drow helping her recognise mercenaries and bounty hunters that the rest of us would just see as um well armed locals. Lamahla and Maneira are held as Telka dies, then Zeela is killed shortly after a second hold captures her. Maneira and then Lamahla are finished off before the original hold expires.

Back in Nashkel we identify the owner of a greenstone ring and return it to his widow before collecting our reward from Berrun Ghastkill. Nimbul is supremely confident of his ability to stop us, casting mirror image and trying to scare Vorle(tte). He fires one volley of magic missiles as we kill him and I ask Edwin why he only casts one at a time when Nimbul can cast a handful. Edwin tells me not to be so nosey and for a moment I thought I heard something else (clueless shrike!)

We make our way to Beregost in search of a compatriot of Mulahey and Nimbul. He's at Feldepost's, and shows Vorle(tte) how to cast Melfs Acid Arrow. Once he is dead I ask Edwin why he doesn't cast such a useful spell and his sharp retort is to say he is biding his time with another loud mumble afterwards (and when the time arrives I will strike you all down!)

Vorle(tte). Cavalier 3, 31hp. 72 kills, Tranzig. ** 2HS, * staff, ** 2 handed weapon style.
Imoen. Thief 3, 21hp. 25 kills, Lamahla. * short bow, short sword.
Viconia. Cleric 3, 14hp. 20 kills Arghain. * mace, * sling.
Edwin. Conjurer 2, 10hp. 11 kills, gnoll. * quarterstaff.

Gate70/Grond0 Multiplayer attempt 26 {2} - (4th and final update)
Stiel, halfling assassin (Grond0) & Andal, human bounty hunter (Gate70)

The final battles didn't go entirely according to plan.  Things started off with some pre-laid traps that didn't fire against Slythe.  That exposed Andal to attack and he was badly hurt before a series of poisoned darts persuaded Slythe to try to attack Stiel - without success.

We concluded that one of the multi-player effects meant that traps placed by the subsidiary player went out of their control after a rest (and then failed to fire).  Hence Andal only used his day's allocation to soften up the dopplegangers at the palace.  On activating, 1 of the dopplegangers chased Stiel and 3 more Andal.  The plus side of that was that the dukes were pretty safe (especially with poisoned darts of stunning and dispelling arrows flying around).  The downside was that Andal found it difficult to manage being chased in a laggy environment and some doppleganger claws caught him once too often.

Backstabs ruled as the duo went through the maze and on to confront the Undercity party.  Andal tried to set traps there, only for his stealth to fail at exactly the wrong moment.  That exposed the duo to attack and both saved against hold persons while running, stealthing and backstabbing to finish the party off.  The XP from that got them up to level 9 and Stiel celebrated his increased assassination ability with his first 3 figure backstab on a hapless skeleton.

In the temple we decided to take on everyone rather than just Sarevok.  Bounty Hunter traps were triggered with a fireball, but didn't kill anyone.  The duo were sheltered by green scrolls against magic attack, but still needed to finish off Angelo to avoid his arrows of detonation.  That was done by Andal using a potion of invisibility to disappear after an exploding arrow caught Sarevok in the blast - he's not a forgiving sort.  After the others were dead Stiel concentrated on running and hiding to backstab Sarevok, while Andal mainly fired his Eagle Bow.  Stiel managed several backstabs, but it was Andal who got the glory when he eventually landed a backstab of his own to finish off Sarevok.

The duo reported back to Duke Belt and have just arrived in Athkatla.

Stats:
Stiel, assassin L9, 55 HPs, 113 kills
Andal, bounty hunter  L9, 56 HPs, 120 kills, 1 death

Klug - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

Annoyed at making such a soft exit with Twerp I immediately afterwards rolled up a new entrant in my increasingly vain hope to prove how unstoppable swashbucklers are.  Klug's stats are a natural roll, though I did re-roll for a few minutes to get one with few gameplay disadvantages.

Like Twerp, Klug will be restricted to using only passive magic items (note to self/Alesia: that includes equipping the Dragonslayer sword).

I don't think I've been trying quite so hard to be safe as with Twerp, but it's still been a pretty clean run.  Minor issues encountered so far included:
- a slight struggle to get Samuel back to the Friendly Arm - had to drop him twice during ambushes, circling round to pick him up again as Klug was encumbered and without any armour.
- not entirely safe against the sirenes moving around.  None of them managed to cast a spell, but two of them started trying to.
- the revenant was barely scratched by traps so Klug had to resort to a rare use of stealth backstabs in and out of the cave.
- I let Narcillicus get close enough to talk just before he walked into a bunch of traps.  I didn't fancy dealing with mustard jellies so let him get away.

Klug has just arrived at the Nashkel Mines ready to start making progress with the main quest.

Klug - dwarf swashbuckler (final update)

Klug has finished his adventures on the Sword Coast with his defeat of Sarevok.  Klug's lack of a strength damage bonus was noticeable there for the first time - in earlier fights he was nearly always using traps and crossbow rather than melee.

Everything was pretty straightforward and he was never exposed to danger.  The only slightly surprising thing was that Marek survived 4 pre-laid traps.  However, as his first spell is mirror image Klug had time to break contact anyway.  Liia also got killed in the palace, but that was as a result of me trying to avoid getting too much surplus XP and Belt himself was never in danger.

Congratulations Grond0, good luck with the challenge you've set yourself.

Vorle(tte) and her companions are shattered so I volunteer to update their jounal. It's the least I can do after being rescued from an ignomious death at the hands of these bandits. I've been cooped up for days, if not weeks, and although I could sense trouble outside I knew I would have to hold on a while longer.

I sensed the moment had arrived when Venkt lost his voice and took on a doomed appearance. Vorle(tte) arrived to draw the attention of Raemon as Edwin peeked from behind her to fire a magic missile at Venkt. Imoen appeared from the shadows between them to shoot arrows at Venkt while Viconia emerges slightly too soon from sanctuary. Her command spell is interrupted by Hakt who manages to poison her instead of taking his aim at Vorle(tte).

Viconia switches to a mace and moves in as Vorle(tte) draws Raemon and Britik away from Imoen/Edwin and towards Hakt. Edwin and Imoen have finished off Venkt as Viconia glugs a blue potion - these rescuers appear to have forgotten their green potions today. She moves off as Hakt panics and aims her sling. Hakt doesn't last long and Vorle(tte) glugs two potions while fending off Raemon and Britik. They can't take the heat and my rescue is complete.

Imoen deals with the trapped container nearby and I update their map to show Cloakwood.

@Grond0 - Grats! Hope your swashbuckler can do at least as good as Corthief II...
@Gate70 - sorry to hear that. Hope you have fun in the minimal reload thread.

Up to this point, I have never got a solo fighter/mage of any type past BG 1. I should be able to, they are a good class. To give me the best possible chance, I made a fighter/illusionist for the save bonus. Without further ado, here is Pedran.
Image IPB

He's played pretty smartly (I think) so far, though he has taken risks now and then, notably against other mages. Mulahey is pretty easy with fireball wand scorcher apparently, I did greenstone amulet before that, but Pedran never got targeted.

His biggest challenge by far was the bandit camp. Tazok not too hard with STR 23 potion, haste and invulnerability. With these same buffs running, plus shield and greenstone amulet, Predran pressed into Tazok's tent. Well it didn't go so hot, as Pedran and Venkt traded spells, but Venkt hit Pedran with like 3 melfs, and Pedran was getting hurt bad - so Pedran left the tent. Everyone followed but Pedran re-entered. No one followed! So Pedran looted and healed to full. The drawback though, was the entire outside was now hostile, including Khosann! Pedran went outside, held two enemies and was forced to go into the tent again. Pedran ran around (with haste still active) and did fireballs and scorchers (using up the wand), and a final hold person on Khosann, the last survivor. Khosann melees with his hammer and wins the fight! Whew...

Image IPB

The intent is to solo BG 1 and BG 2 (not sure about ToB). I expect a gruesome death due to my relative solo inexperience, but solos take a lot less time than full parties, so interested in faster runs plus the new challenge. Not to mention at least one of my solo fighter/mages should be able to make it past BG 1....

Pedran the gnomish level 7 fighter/level 7 illusionist update

Just a quick note. Pedran is at the level cap, so it's upgrades/main quest from here on in. Drassus was defeated by improved invisibility, web/stinking cloud and some fireballs/hold persons, and arrows to finish. Most of the Cloakwood mine was skipped with invisibility, buffs were enough to defeat the battle horrors, and Davaeorn didn't have a good response to improved invisibility. Lot of stuff had to be left behind, but Pedran is at 30,000 gold so that should be fine.

Pedran decided he would really like a fireball wand, so he went invisible in the Ulcaster School and got one - then went invisible back out.

He also decided he might need a slashing belt later - so he battles Kirian's group the exactly same way as Drassus group: improved invisibility, web, stinking cloud, fireball x2 and then a single arrow to finish off the sole survivor. A lot of needed items were found in the loot.

Pedran is at the entrance to the City of Baldur's Gate, considering his next move.

Going to try a monk again, aim is to get to ToB so a big stretch but not impossible. First attempt isn't off to a great start thanks to hit point rolls of 6, 3 and 5 so could be interesting. I won't be posting large updates.

Pedran the gnomish level 7 fighter/level 7 illusionist - Last Chapter

Pedran has thwarted Sarevok's plans for Baldur's Gate. He managed to out-melee Cythandria and her Ogre Berserkers, Slythe and the Greater Dopplegangers at the palace. He got a little scare at the Palace, as his haste wore off near the beginning of the fight. However, 3 dopplegangers were attacking him, which meant both Dukes survived.

Pedran is currently chasing Sarevok in the thieve's maze. Here is his resources for his final confrontation if anyone interested.

Pedran the Gnomish level 7 fighter/level 7 illusionist - FINAL BG 1 update

So Pedran made it to the Temple of Bhaal, mostly by buffing for fire and lightning damage and going invisible through the thieve's maze and also the Undercity.

He does what buffs he can, including the important improved invisibility. While he intends to tank Sarevok, he does have a monster wand, so can bow first and when wand poofs then tank. But first, he moves left and fires dispelling arrows at Sarevok (which don't connect). Pedran retreats to entrance and puts up some summons. Semaj appears. Pedran switches target to Semaj, firing dispelling arrows then arrows of biting. However, each time, Semaj refreshes his mirror images, though he did get poisoned a few times.

Oh, here comes Angelo, firing exploding arrows at Sarevok's position. Now, at this point, I was wondering, hmm, Pedran personally hasn't damage Sarevok (just dispelled him), maybe Angelo made Sarevok mad?
Image IPB
Yes, he did! Sarevok kills Angelo, one down, three to go.

Pedran scouts around - ah there are the bad guys in a bunch. Pedran uses his biggest damage arrows, his +2 arrows on Semaj - one arrow kills him! Ah, just melees, this should go pretty smooth now.
Image IPB

Pedran puts up more summons and pumps +2 arrows into Tazok - takes a little bit, and Pedran is always careful to refresh summons before they are all are destroyed - yep Tazok falls!
Image IPB

This strategy of having summon distrations and attacking with this bow is working so well, Pedran decides to use up his summoning wand before trying to tank Sarevok. As it turned out, Sarevok ran out of hit points before the monster wand poofed - Sarevok is defeated!
Image IPB

Pedran will move on to BG 2. He will attempt to solo there as well. Not sure about ToB yet.

Still easy to die though, just one mistake needed.

& as I'm not working this week Carthusian (2) is on day 14, hour 16.
Lindin was the first enemy (other than Tamoko) to injure him.
Throwing daggers were used to start but stealthy hit and run is starting to take over.

Jobs done (in order)

- Candlekeep
- Marl/Firebead/Mirianne
- Melicamp (survived, throwing daggers)
- Mad Arcand (very close to a carrion crawler thanks to pathing)
- Brage
- Shoal (throwing daggers)
- Basilisks, Mutamin, Kirian (Mutamin hit / run without time to talk, Kirians gang took 3 missile charges + tidyup)
- Mulahey (plan was necklace of missiles but blocked in and kicked to bits; failed 2 spells)
- Samuel
- Joia
- Farmer Brun (sneaked in and out)
- Nimbul (arrived before I spoke to the mayor, he killed 1 guard and hit with 1 set of missiles)

Equipment
Ring of Protection +1
Ring of Fire resistance
Boots: Stealth, Avoidance and Grounding
Girdles: Golden
Cloaks: Displacement
Amulets: Shield, Missiles, Greenstone
Pantaloons: Golden

Rests: 0. Nil. Zip. A fortnight in and not even fatigued! No Bhaalspawn ability yet no stunning blows used.

Monk 6, 41hp (10 + 3 + 4 + 10 + 9 + 5). 43 kills, Greater Basilisk.

Carthusian (2) has a game of darts with Meilum (might as well test the proficiency). 45 are used to make a series of tiny wounds and the greatest swordsman of the Sword Coast sinks to the ground. As Carthusian waits for the gauntlets to be identified his eyes rest on the Dagger of Venom. Sold!

Tranzig is given a chance to talk (& a fair fight) but decides to cast armour as Carthusian hides. Melf Acid Arrow > Magic Missile are cast before Carthusian realises what he has done with the dagger. He grasps it firmly, and strikes hard. Tranzig saves against the poison but yields. In his panic he attacks again so Carthusian hides and stabs him again, the mage falling before any poison can spread.

A few potions are purchased (7 healing, 5 poison) and Carthusian is ready for the bandit camp. A series of venomous strikes has dealt with numerous hobgoblins and bandits including Ardenor Crush and Taugosz Khosann.

Timeline is Day 17 hour 17. Still not rested - eyes like saucers.

Day 22 hour 5. Carthusian has risked all by racing through an ettercap trap (the top one, had greenstone amulet but not a potion of freedom) and made it to Cloakwood Mine. He doesn't like the look of Drasus or his boots so uses 4 necklace charges and two oils of fiery burning. The boots look much better now.

Day 22 hour 7. Davaeorn may be dead but a couple of saves against charm were required - at level 7 Carthusian is 2 levels shy of immunity to it.

1 slight issue (timewise); Carthusian has dropped his pantaloons in Beregost (haven't we all) and has to detour there on the way to Baldur's Gate. As this will be his last visit he empties his spares container after getting a few items identified and sold. Then a trip to the cave of Black Alaric beckons, making it day 29 hour 20 by the time Carthusian reaches the city in earnest.

Only a couple of things to do. Identify tomes of dexterity and constitution, use a strength potion to speak to Degrodel, Vail and Quenash about the Cloak of Balduran, pick up some evidence at the Iron Throne HQ (sneakily) and report in to Duke Eltan.

Day 29 hour 22. Stood outside Candlekeep with a rare book. Storm giant potion & PfM scroll too.
Day 29 hour 23. Stood outside Candlekeep with 2 magical tomes. Only killed the basilisks for XP.
Day 31 hour 4. Slythe is dead.
Day 31 hour 5. Belt and Liia both survive (4 dragged upstairs), dimensionfolded to Thieves Guild.

(intend to rest for the first time outside the abandoned temple to pick up Bhaalspawn abilities)

Change of plan.Carthusian rests six times before tackling the thieves maze. His inventory is stuffed full in case of emergency.

Day 33, hour 6. The maze and Rahvin have been sneaked past.
PfM applied before the skeleton warriors. No other buffs as Angelo and Semaj will spoil them!
3 oils of fiery burning are used to warm Sarevok and his gang up.
Sarevok attacks after 2 necklace of missiles.
Carthusian loops around to use the final charge on Semaj / Tazok / Angelo.
Angelo and Semaj have de-buffed Carthusian so he applies potions.
Perception > 2x Mind Focusing > Storm Giant > Heroism. (oops, forgot one-vulnerability, see below)
Image IPB

Time to play. Angelo and Sarevok are admiring a statue so Semaj will be first and Tazok if he's around.
No sign of Tazok - good job too. Glug an invulnerability and pummel Semaj.
Angelo wanders over so target him instead.
Semaj teleports away as Angelo lands two arrows before exploding.
Image IPB

Glug a regeneration and deal with Semaj. Tazok weighs in with a hit of 16.
Glug, run, hide, glug, hit, run. Hit, run, hit, run.
Semaj upsets Tazok and they start fighting. Carthusian weighs in to try and take the kill.
Image IPB

3rd time lucky eh Semaj. A moment or two later...
Image IPB

Only the big bad boy now, who is in for a game of hide and seek.
He lands a couple of hits but Carthusian has some regenerative potions, plenty of healing potions and so on.
Image IPB

Towards the end the invulnerability wears off so a second is glugged.
PfM expires just as the final kick lands.
Image IPB

Day 33 hour 8. Plenty of gear left, good job as Belt will have another task lined up already.
(might seem like overkill but I had early games where I ran out of resources and Sarevok would grind my parties into the temple floor over many minutes)
Just need to pick up the pantaloons from Black Lily (barrel).

Monk 8, 93 kills - Angelo.

Grale - dwarf Kensai (update 1)

As Gate70 is taking a break from kensais I thought I would fill the void with a quick run.  Grale has so far just made it to the City.  He's mastered the art of 2-handed sword fighting and has used his sword in most battles, with non-proficient throwing axes being his back-up option.

That's meant that he's been badly injured quite a lot and he doesn't have any Bhaal healing ability.  Unlike most of my characters he has used a few healing potions, but the bulk of his healing has been done resting in inns - up to Game Day 143 already!

Image IPB
