Good luck Grond0! Grale is going to be fearsome with the Spider's Bane..probably with the berserker sword too, though whether Grale himself could survive the berserker sword I guess is a question too..he's the right race though.

Good luck Grond0.

What's the longer term weapon plan; although 2 handed weapons feel right for a kensai I find the benefit of dual wielding offering more immunities (hold, fear, charm for example) outweighs it once into Amn.

I'm intending to use a 2-handed sword as a standard weapon with the throwing hammer as back-up. I agree that dual wielding tends to be more beneficial, but I'm not expecting to do that much this run - there will be occasions where other weapons are used for immunity purposes (Dragonslayer anyone), but those should be pretty rare.

Grale - dwarf kensai (update 2)

I did actually just manage to finish off Sarevok before leaving for work this morning.  He picked up the remaining outstanding tomes from the city and surrounding area, before using a potion of invisibility to bypass the Iron Throne fight.

Storm giant strength and a potion of absorption were used to loot the tombs at Candlekeep before leaving invisibly.

Slythe suffered from a potioned-up kensai and Grale hurried straight to the palace with his buffs still up.  His speed can be noted from the fact that he had already killed one doppleganger before the doorman got around to asking him if he had an invitation!  Both dukes survived there.

After fighting through the maze he took the long route round to the temple to bypass the Undercity party.  Sarevok was pulled out with a throwing axe and Grale used the remainder of his 15 or so axes to do some initial damage.  If he'd been lucky he could have tanked Sarevok at that point, but on closing with him Sarevok immediately hit with a critical.  I decided then to revert to a run and stab strategy, relying on kensai weapon speed to attack before Sarevok could retaliate.  He did still get a few attacks in, but not enough to cause problems and Grale claimed his victory.

He quickly ran reputation up to 20 before reporting to Duke Belt for duty in Athkatla.  Here's his record on arrival in the dungeon - he had 337 kills in BG1.

Edit: realised that he's only got 1 DUHM, so Grale must have taken a leaf out of Gate70's book and given up resting in the last phase of his BG1 adventures!

OK my last post on Zoe was at the bandit camp. I headed west, and had a pretty uneventful run from there. A couple of tense moments in the cloakwood mine level 2, twice her stealth failed while trying to pin down Hareishian. I ducked into the prison cells, switched to the stealth armour and boots, and hid just as the entire lot arrived. This was the closest she's got to death.

Image IPB

Anyway, I took out Davaernon and both his battle horrors, then headed to the city. Did a couple of easy quests, not many, ignored the sewers, got a second ring of mega-level1 spells & Balduran's helm, then cleared the top of the throne without any trouble. I did fail a chaos spell, but ran out of everyone's sight and stealthed before it took.

Image IPB

Back to candlekeep, got the tomes, Prat wasn't there as I was stealthed, so I cleared out all the spiders, traps, & basilisks, then set a trap for Prat, which triggered them in. The other 3 were easy, but Prat chose to hide and refused to fight me, so I left.

Slythe was also pretty easy, and I got Balduran's cloak, now I'm off to the palace, and then a quick finish against Sarevok. This character is way too overpowered for BG1, so I expect to get through pretty easily, but will probably come short in BG2. Anything I need to know about no-reloading the palace? I seem to remember I have to keep at least one of the dukes alive? Well I'll find out the hard way I suppose.

(edit, my last post seems to have gone AWOL. So to recap this is the 3rd incarnation of Carthusian and I was trying to record how long each action took. He'd got as far as the basilisk map)

Carthusian has no time to rest, he just eats a snack and quaffs a strange drink made from some ground beans ;)

Day 13 hour 22. Free Tamah. Kill remaining basilisks. Kill Mutamin. 2x necklaces for Kirian and Peter.
Coup de grace shadow punch for Baerin. 4 shadowy hits for Lindin.
+9hp. The gods have been kind so far, long may it continue (another 3 levels anyway)
Jump to Beregost to sell/store items.

Day 14 hour 13. Not quite enough cash to purchase the Dagger of Venom.
Jump to North of Nashkel.

Day 14 hour 18.
East to Hulrik's homestead. Only stop to pick up a water opal.

Day 14 hour 22.
East to Firewine Bridge.

Day 15 hour 15. Bracers taken from Meilum.
Jump to Nashkel Mine.

Day 16 hour 16. Mulahey stunned > scared > dead.
North to Nashkel.

Day 18 hour 0. Report in to Berrun Ghastkill (reputation 20). Punch Nimbul hard only for a guard to shoot him.
North to Beregost.

Day 18 hour 8. Purchase the Dagger of Venom, report in to Officer Vai. Envenomate Tranzig.
Jump to bandit camp.

Monk 6. 51hp. 45 kills, Greater Basilisk.

Day 19 hour 5. The bandit camp is shrouded in darkness so Carthusian sets to work with the Dagger of Venom. It is light by 6am although Ardenor Crush and his men are all lifeless. By hour 7 Taugosz Khosann is also dead and only his bandits remain. It is almost too light for skulduggery by hour 8 but Credus still gets caught unawares.

Day 19 hour 9. Venkt survives a venom strike as Raemon and Britik chase Carthusian outside. The monk has already hidden and returned. Venkt saves the second hit and shrugs off the poison to cast horror. Carthusian runs around as Venkt adds some Melf Acid Arrows and Hakt shoots. Carthusian recovers in time to glug a healer and strike Venkt out before using the main pillar to hide from Hakt. Four potions later he strikes out after hiding again.

Level up, +9hp. (lucky not to be killed by Venkt and Hakt there, should have greenstoned).

A trip to Beregost means Carthusian reaches Cloakwood on day 21 hour 10. A potion of freedom is used this time and Cloakwood Mine is reached on day 23 hour 19 with a druidic potion of invulnerability to boot. It is hour 20 by the time two guards are killed. Cartusian hides after throwing an oil of fiery burning at Drasus, but fails to hide after the second oil.

He manages to hide and finds Drasus is alone, while the two mages are standing together with Genthore close by. Genthore is drawn out and poisoned then Kysus is poisoned as Rezdan re-mirrors and summons help. Drasus gets a hidden dagger and trades three more dagger blows for one flail hit in a running battle. Rezdan is alone and unmirrored by the time Carthusian returns...

Day 23 hour 22. Rill is freed. Day 24 hour 0. Davaeorn is dead and Cloakwood Mine is flooded.

You do need to keep either Belt or Liia alive, yes.  If you've got the SCS improved dopplegangers then that will be extremely challenging for your solo character.  The only way I can do it reliably with most solos is to use cheese and drag them upstairs/downstairs/outside - that pauses the action for the dukes while you deal with the dopplegangers.  As they use charm, horror and confusion, you'll also probably want some form of protection when dealing with them.

Clearly I skipped SCS improved doppelgangers, go me!

The palace also turned out to be a doddle, both Lisa & Belt survived.

Image IPB

The improved Sarevok fight requires I kill his 4 henchmen before he becomes vulnerable, and when a henchman dies, a skelly warrior appears. Even so, they were pathetically easy to separate.

Image IPB

Zoe gained levels in mage & fighter for killing Sarevok, so now levels 9/10/11. Wrapping up some stuff in the sword coast, like the poison quest & final wisdom tome, then back to Belt and presumably on to Amn.

Congratulations TP1.

Carthusian (3rd) had his only 6 rests before re-entering Baldur's Gate.

He kept both dukes alive and got to Sarevok. Killed Angelo, Tazok and Semaj. Sprung a lightning trap a few seconds after PfM expired. Glugged an absorbtion potion with very low hit points then failed the save for secondary lightning damage and took additional damage. Good job he had heroism active as he was at 1hp with hasty Sarevok after him.

Once he'd hidden and rebuffed things went more smoothly and a series of shadow attacks did the job. Rahvin and most of his gang were terminated on the way out despite scattering. Gorf was nowhere to be seen and I spent a few minutes combing the area for him - how do you lose an ogre?

Skeleton warriors and doom guards cleared on the way out leaving just the mustard jellies in the maze. Arrived back at Belt on Day 30 hour 6, and woken up by Imoen on Day 31 hour 0.

Monk 8, 178320xp, 63/66hp. 112 kills, Angelo.
* in dagger, single weapon style, dart, long sword.
Read 4 tomes (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution and 1 Wisdom).

Huron the solo thief/mage entering the trilogy no-reload challenge...

Well it turns out I couldn't stay away - I was too excited to try another solo arcane character, so this guy has made good progress.

Image IPB
* Quarterstaff
* Shortbow
* Two-hand weapon style

Progress to date:
* blinded and killed Firebeard in Candlekeep
* Calmed Marl, gave Firebeard his book - he didn't remember what happened in Candlekeep.
* Battled Karlat, though it wasn't much of a battle - he failed his save vs. blindness, and after dozens of arrows he goes down...
* Spider infestation taken care of with two sleeps
* I finally took a specific play out of Grond0's book and went after Shoal. I had to kill two dread wolves first, took forever, lots of running around. I used a haste potion to insure success (and non-death) vs. Shoal. Success!
* Joia got her ring back
* used Ankheg armor to fund purchase of sleep wand
* sold ring of wizardry - going to use the funds instead to get critical purchases in Ulgoth's Beard, and if any left over can get things I would want from Beregost, like the +1 short bow.

Huron is currently at FAI, preparing to travel to Ulgoth's Beard.

The dread wolves can be a pain, yes.  If you head down through the path between the trees and rocks and then across to the west you avoid encountering anything (also use the same area when running Shoal round to prevent complicating that fight with intruders).

Cusp - dwarf swashbuckler (hour 1)

My previous attempt with a kensai wasn't really intended seriously, but this time the aim is definitely to complete the trilogy.  To that end Cusp will be playing without my typical restrictions and I'll be doing my best to avoid any risks.  To help stay focused on that I'll restrict gaming sessions to no more than an hour at a time.

Thus far Cusp has escaped Candlekeep and laboriously set 5 traps to deal with Shoal (he had no proficient missile weapons with him at the time so was quite dependent on trap damage).  On to Beregost where a mistake in dialogue with Marl meant he had to be shot up before Firebead got his book.  One spider was trapped following Cusp out of its house, while the other 3 were bow victims.  A couple of traps for Karlat allowed Cusp past to return Perdue's sword, while 3 more saw the back of Silke (got a bonus there when the last of Cusp's 4 attempts at pickpocketing while the merchants were leaving got him an extra potion of defense).

Trapping an ogrillon to the south got Cusp to level 5.  His 28 HPs are relatively poor, but still will make it difficult for a potential bandit ambush to kill him.  To make things still safer Cusp stole a potion of invisibility from the Beregost manor house after returning Mirianne's letter and picking up some boots of stealth for himself.

Down to Nashkel to talk to Noober & Oublek and steal another potion of invisibility from the mayor's house.  At the Carnival Oopah and Vitiare were trapped; the thieving potion from Vitiare allowed Cusp to steal another potion of invisibility from the potion seller.  As resting at the Carnival is safe it was easy to set a bunch of traps for Zordral to walk into when chasing Cusp out of his tent (even 7 traps isn't guaranteed to kill him with mirrors up, so Cusp had dodged out of the tent before Zordral had the chance to complete his mirror image spell).  Before leaving the area, Cusp bought the green scroll of protection from petrification and the necklace of missiles.

There was just time in the hour for Cusp to lay down 5 traps for Greywolf - finishing him off with a couple of arrows.

Cusp - swashbuckler L5, 28 HPs, 18 kills

Zoe arrived in Amn, at which point I decided I'm heading straight back to Candlekeep with my third Zoe-clone, appropriately called Zo3.

Image IPB

She's a straight Fighter/Thief instead of FMT, and dwarven rather than Elvish. More importantly, she's not hacked to all 18 stats, and doesn't have the regenerating ioun stone. Neither of those really contributed to how overpowered Zoe was, nevertheless I want to do this run by the book.

Hi all. I just wanted to annouce that I've started a new run. Meet Abbie: Halfling Barbarian.
Image IPB

Proficiencies: Axes (x2), Two Weapon Style (x2)

I'm pretty excited about this run actually. And not because of my character's class, but how I intend to play her. Abbie will be RPed in terms of her game world decisions and, more importantly, played in accordance with the spirit of DnD 2nd edition rules. She'll be limited to knowledge that she might be expected to possess in the game world and to tactics that a PnP dungeon master might be expected to allow.

I've deliberately left the details of how this will work underspecified. And if Abbie's life is endangered, I may take liberties. But this run will be far more heavily influenced by a PnP sensibility.

Anyhoo. I'll post more on Abbie relatively soon. Best of luck to everyone!

A.

@Potty 1. I'm glad to hear that you've decided to go by the book this time. Good luck!

@Corey. Enjoy your M/T! (Out of curioustity: What inspired you to choose the name Huron?)

@Alesia: Nice to meet Abbie! (I feel like saying Barbie, though seems she is more like anti-Barbie... Wait! You don't understand - she is true Barbie, even if she is such a small growth...).
I'm looking forward to follow her PnP inspired RP adventures with great anticipation!
