Zetran the half-elf fighter/cleric entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge...

Setup:
Vanilla BG 1
Tales of the Sword Coast
Official TotSC patch
core rules at all times
"gore"  on (characters can be permanently killed)

(What's odd about this run: I know people have done groups of all fighters, and I know that people have done groups of all clerics, but  no one that I know has done group of all fighter/clerics ever, as far as I know - now some-one has! Now we get to our Story...)

In Candlekeep, there once was a Bhaalspawn named Zetran. He was a very strong half-elf, and was able to defeat any Watcher in arm wrestling. He was a decent cleric, though not the best. He was also smart enough to use wands...he was adored by other fighter/clerics who were in the keep for various reasons, both because he so strong, a good cleric, and, well, TALLER than the ladies (the ladies are all dwarves/gnomes). The ladies themselves:

Paja - Paja had a hard time deciding what to be in life, but when she met Zetran she decided to be a fighter/cleric as well. She rather stinks at being a cleric, and is just barely strong enough to wear full plate. She's good with blunt weapons and slings. She not super dexterous or tough, BUT she can charm the socks off you. Of all the ladies with a crush on Zetran, she also happens to be the only one of the group who might also steal your lunch...she got a crush on Zetran on first meeting him, but thought he was too good for her - she was happy to be his friend though.

Hanna - Hanna adores Zetran, but not romantically, but as a daughter adores a father. Her father died at an early age, and she doesn't have many friends, but Zetran has always been there for her. Zetran has mentored her from the very beginning, and now she is almost a good as cleric as he is. She trusts Zetran implicitly and would follow him anywhere. Hanna is a good fighter, an average cleric, favors spiked weapons and is also good with a sling.

Melissa - She has only just recently arrived in Candlekeep, but has been stuck here due to the bandits. She is the toughest of everyone, but admires Zetran's strength. She herself is a good fighter, and even an excellent cleric (18 WIS). She does have a boyfriend in her home town, but if she were to travel the road, Zetran is exactly who she would want to accompany her. She always likes to have several males lined up, so that in case the 1st one doesn't work out, she can have a boyfriend immediately with the 2nd one in line. She's trying to get Zetran to like her, but she knows it's tough with him being a half-elf and her a dwarf. She favors spiked weapons and slings.

Vicky - Vicky has lived in Candlekeep her entire life, and thus was a schoolmate of Zetran. She's an OK fighter, though not the best and an OK cleric, though again not the best. She has red hair, though she wears a cap over it most of the time. She swoons every time Zetran wins an arm wrestling match. She's Zetran's friend, but keeps waiting for Zetran to make the first move - but she's not giving him any hints, and thus Zetran has been oblivious to her crush this entire time. She's good with blunt weapons and slings.

Anna - Anna is a great fighter and an average cleric. She's good with blunt weapons and slings. She's not the smartest one on the block, but she just loves the game of chess. As it happens, Zetran plays a mean game himself - he and Anna have played many a game. Anna enjoys her daily dose of chess so much, she will follow him anywhere, just so he can keep playing her. She knows as a gnome she has little chance with Zetran, but she keeps hoping...

Gorion has told Zetran to prepare for a journey, though he hasn't said to where. With the bandit activity, this sounds dangerous to the ladies, and they insisted to Zetran they will come with him and keep him safe, they don't want to see him hurt. And thus, the adventure of the fighter/clerics begins...

Yep, good travels Corey.

Carthusian IV picked up two tomes and cleared the basilisk map including a gnome and some uppity adventurers). Then a roaming basilisk gets payback with another petrified ambush right next to the steadily crumbling form of Carthusian I. Going to have to either stick to the same route or keep an emergency potion to hand.

... or autopause on enemy sight and run south when an ambush triggers that could involve a basilisk. That's safe for solo characters, though not necessarily for a party.

Zetran and his band of female fighter/clerics - update 2

Gorion and Zetran were walking ahead and got ambushed - the lady fighter/clerics were too far back to be any assistance, Gorion was slain quickly but Zetran survived. Imoen wanted to join, but we don't have provisions for 7 people so refused. Paja used her 16 CHA to convince the party to kill Imoen for her stuff. Paja argued it is actually merciful that they do that, so that she didn't get captured by the bandits roaming the Coast, imagine what they'd do to her? Later Zetran realized this argument has some holes in it, but what was done was done.

Also on the road, Melissa said that halfling touched her in ways he shouldn't have when she was 10, but there was nothing she could do it about then. The party remembered her telling about him before, and exploded in wrath against these evil men. Xzar and Montaron could offer no resistance, and will harm no one else. Nearby we found a diamond in a tree, this could help the fledgling group.

So the party moves to Lioon's way, lots of gibberlings, but the enemies were slain quickly. A magical ring was found, and the ladies said Zetran must use it, he must survive. Zetran appreciates their thoughtfulness, and resolves to do whatever he can to protect them and lead them well, and also avenge them if they are killed so badly as to be unresurrectable. He will of course do any job, no matter how demeaing, if it's needed to pay to bring one of his friends back to life. Thankfully, it hasn't been needed yet.

The group got to the Friendly Arm Inn, found some kind of ring in a hole in the ground, and was exhausted and so rested right in front of the draw bridge. They made way in, and were accosted by a mage with a twisted smile. The party had did resist fear and bless the moment they saw him, and when he said he would kill us, we unloaded everything we had - however, the FAI guards were actually vigilant and they got the kill shot on Tarnesh.

After selling all the loot we got to this point, we were able to purchase 4 plate mails and even two large shield +1, one for Zetran again, as he must survive. Rest was used for heal potions (10) and an antidote for Zetran.

Zetran suggested going for a walk on the path around FAI, and the group ran into aggressive hobgoblins, who were heavily outclassed. They didn't even get a hit on the group. We found a lady whose ring was taken by the hobgoblins, she was happy to get it back. We sold the rest of our junk, rested, and will prepare to journey into the Lion's Way, thought not before playing some chess with Anna of course.

I always buy a potion of mirrored eyes on my first trip to High Hedge.

I've never had to use it, but I still buy it everytime just in case.

I always buy mirror eye POTIONS (2) from High Hedge first anytime I travel to Ulcaster, Basilisk area, Gullykin or Firewine Ruins. Unlike Alesia I HAVE had to use them. And worse, I've gotten baslisk ambush going TO an area AND on the way back, so hence why I buy the 2 potions now. If party play, I also buy scrolls of stone to flesh since they don't have the protection.

Zetran and his band of fighter/clerics - update 4

(around a campfire near the walls of Friendly Arm Inn, at night)
Zetran: We need to decide what to do.
Hanna: I'm scared, Zetran - the armored figure that killed Gorion looks invincible.
Zetran: Fear not, Hanna. We have each other - and we can sanctuary to escape if needed.
Melissa: Shouldn't we stay on the move? That bounty notice on Tarnesh suggests there are other assassins, but it should be harder for them to find us if we don't stay at any one place long.
Zetran: Agreed. While I don't think that armored figure is invincible, I do agree that is probably beyond our league at the moment. We need much better equipment, and much more practice using our weapons and spells.
Paja: So do fight things like basilisks? That should make us better fighters!
Vicky: Wouldn''t that mostly make us dead?
Zetran: Vicky is on target, we need to deal with enemies that within our ability to defeat. I want us to head to Nashkel, then the Gnoll Fortress. Gnolls aren't known for their guile, and I suspect we'll find some things there we need.
Paja: Where-ever you go Zetran, I will go with - if that brute tries to kill you, he'll have to go through me first!
(other ladies speak unanimously) : Us too!
Zetran: Very well. We will travel first light.

So Zetran and his party travel on the road to Beregost. Entangle dealt with an ogre, who had a belt that seems to help against enemy missiles. Zetran and team did various errands in Beregost, including slaying yet another assassin named Karlat. Command however won the battle easily, this time.

Zetran's party made it to Nashkel without any trouble, their slings are very effective against slow moving enemies, and entangle helps for enemies too tough to try to take in melee. An ankheg armor was found for Paja in Nashkel, as well as an assassin. Paja and Hanna charged, Zetran got some distance and Anna tried command again - Neira didn't fall for that though. It didn't matter though, as the party was too accurate and hitting too hard and Neira fell. Yet another bounty notice found on her...

The party defeats a crazed ogre at the carnival, as well the mage Zordral who attempted to murder another mage - he couldn't even get a spell off.

The party defeated the enemies at the gnoll fortress with no difficulty at all. Some of the ladies asked why did Paja get the gauntlets that were found, but Zetran replied she is both in front and has the worst dexterity, and thus would benefit the most from it. Paja also got the CHA tome, since the rest of us have no charisma to speak of. We didn't get any levels yet, entire party is still level 1 fighter/level 1 cleric!

Thus, when we got an Ogre Mage ambush, the party held their ground. Initially the group scattered so an area effect would affect only a small number of the party, then entangles because a cave bear approaching as well. Command did not help, so the party just used their slings, plus healing from damage from the Ogre Mage - no deaths and success!

The party returns to the Lake area where they found the girl's dead cat, and finally resting here (group was tired) the group got ambushed and got their first levels of the game. The group also cleared the road from Candlekeep to Beregost without incident, and everyone got to level 2 fighter except Zetran. The group eventually decided to take up a Bard's job in Beregost, but Silke wanted us to murder and we said no, so had to fight her - this finally gave Zetran his level 2 fighter.

Clearly, the party will have to practice a lot, as they aren't improving quickly.

Party Status/Tanking Order:
Paja, 21 HP, 29 kills, Zordral
Hanna, 20 HP, 39 kills, Marl
Melissa, 26 HP, 54 kills, Huge Spider
Vicky, 20 HP, 40 kills, The Amazing Oopah
Anna, 23 HP, 43 kills, Mountain Bear
Zetran, 21 HP, 51 kills, Silke

Thanks Grond0. I usually prefer not to do the basilisks unless I can also take care of Kirian's Party - I hate to miss out on their slashing belt. Thus, if we get to level 3 cleric first, we'll have a lot of hold persons/silences and that would likely be enough to swing the battle our way.

Just a quick note about Zetran and his team of fighter/clerics: After clearing the road areas from Beregost to Nashkel and also the Drizzt area, the team is now level 3 cleric. This allows silence and hold persons, and thus many more of the harder encounters are now possible for our group (Molkar, Kirian, Bassilus). Paja got quite the shocking experience in the area directly north of Nashkel - she was hit with a lightning strike! But as I am vanilla BG 1, those strikes never do damage, fortunately.

The team only has 2 magical melee weapons, so we keep a lot of magical cudgel spells memorized in case we run into a vampiric wolf or jelly, but we haven't yet.

Zetran and the band of fighter/clerics continue their adventure...
Traveling with: Paja, Hanna, Melissa, Vicky, Anna

Zetran and his group have made a lot of progress, many more areas have been explored. The team is level 3 fighter/level 4 cleric at the moment, but they are close to level 4 fighter, and when they do, they will probably brave the Ankheg Farm area to get some equipment from Ulgoth's Beard - the party is overflowing with gold (19,000), with very little to spend it on.

Even though we have fought a great many opponents, the combat itself has been rather un-remarkable. Against humanoid enemies, the silence/hold person/command spells have been very potent, and for non-humanoids entangle is often enough. Plus there are many encounters where we don't need to use any spells at all, and our spells/armor get us through.

Battles of note:
* Mulahey - he got held and commanded, while Paja and Hanna kept the minions busy.
* Narcilluss the jelly mage - We tried like 5x silence but he saved vs. them all! Next round we skipped the spells and he died, and that was that for him. We only have 3 magic melee weapons, so we used shillelagh spell for those without and defeated the jellies - Paja had to gulp quite a few blue potions but she pulled through.
* Amazaon assassins - not surprisingly, but with silence/hold person/command/entangle at our disposal, they couldn't do much. They failed to confuse/hold anyone, and they poisoned Vicky but we had a slow poison available, and then the enemies fell.
* Nimbul - incredibly, he saved vs. 3x command and 3x hold person first round - but we did it again next round and he didn't save, and that was that.
* Tranzig - While we did protect with bless/resist fear, we didn't bother with spells against him other than a few commands (which worked) and that was that for him.
* Bassilus - we threw everything we had at him spell wise, and that was that - his minions however were much more difficult, once again Paja had to gulp lots of blue potions - amazing how often ranged people hit her sometimes, even though she has -5 AC and a large shield and the piercing belt.

In  most cases, yes the hits are criticals. Guess I am saying when archers attack Paja, they get lots of natural 20s.

Well stay focused, I'd like to see a bunch of paladins turn up to de-throne Melissan with Carsomyr, FoA, Ravager, etc.

I keep starting a new character then giving up. Not sure what to try next (would be solo). Any suggestions?

Uh, we are fighter/clerics, not Paladins. Why don't you try to be a cleric/thief, I don't remember you trying that class.

Yep, I think a wild mage is possible given time. However, I've still got monk and kensai on my to-do list so adding a 3rd doesn't feel sensible.

Cleric/Thief could be an interesting interlude, going for half orc size over gnomish saves. So here is Griaa;

Best of luck with your C/T Gate. The C/T multi has always interested me: it strikes me as a powerful, underutilized build. I look forward to seeing what you can do with it.

Best,

A.

I've rolled a few C/T's up in the past and quite like them but always overlook them.

Thieving is hidden away on the special abilities menu for C/T which I find irritating. How often do you turn undead with a C/T and how often do you want to loot, open or disable something - switch them over! Just checked and the enhanced edition hasn't done anything about this, shame.

edit
(note to self, don't try silencing holding Bassilus as his extended family go hostile and despite repeated turning of undead they keep coming back to provide enough distraction for him to return the (hold) favour). Brief distraction over.

Carthusian (V) is on the road, using the Carthusian II starting savegame. Hit point rolls were 10 (start) + 7 (2 levels) + 4 + 8 + 5. I make average rolls 42.5 so 8 below average at 34hp?

So far he's done Candlekeep > Shoal > Marl > Firebead > Brage > Basilisks > Mutamin > Kirian x4.
Throwing daggers for Shoal / Mutamin. Fists for basilisks. 2 x necklace of missiles then fists for Kirian.

Starts with * Dagger, * single weapon style. Added * Dart

Zetran and his band of fighter clerics - Update 5

Zetran and his lady friends have cleared the Sword Coast, other than TotSC areas. A fun was vs. Kirian - she did a lot of insults and didn't pay attention to the large mass of undead all around her...
Posted Image

We did some silences and hold persons to boot, so that definitely spelled her defeat. Zetran and his undead friends cleared most of the map on their own.

We had some issues in the Cloakwood. In the shadow druid area, a solo, determined shadow druid held two our our people and killed Vicky - they paid with their life, but it was actually first combat death for the team. We resurrected Vicky and returned.

For our battle with Drassus, we took no chances, and summoned a large army to assist us:

We didn't bother buffing, but we certainly did need to, Our enemies had their hands full with our "friends".

We got to the 1st level, but quit here, to work on my MP run with Dogdancing.

Yes, having silenced and held Bassilus she got about 4-5 hits in while glugging 3-4 blue potions and scaring the undead off at least 5-6 times. Bassilus hit her with rigid thinking. I'd got her out of sight and she survived that so should really have left instead of trying a 2nd hold; he saved and she didn't. Bassilus was out of sight again but there was one crossbow attacker in sight. 3-4 hits were enough to kill her off. Typical user error going at too low a level for him...
