Yeah, portraits. I can lose an hour or two when looking for new ones. Just looked through the last lot I "collected" and the closest I could find for female monk would be this.

Yes, I was thinking of dispelling the doppleganger mirrors.  I'm not sure it would be worth trying with limited potions though - even using a potion of power as well as perception your % is going to be low.

Dispelling those mirror images is potentially a big deal.

How does the math work on detect illusions for monks Polytope?

I don't really know cause it's one of those hardcoded things like turn undead (it's even possible that points in find traps have no effect and only racial/potion bonuses count), but I do know that it's checked individually against each creature (tested with a monk and it took several rounds to dispel the illusions from three mages, one at a time), so it seems hopeless to dispel all the doppleganger's images soon enough

Since your install allows wands for monks you're probably better off alternating between darts of stunning and the wand of paralyzation. Or maybe aggroing the dopplegangers in melee (with buffs and golden girdle ofc.) and using the wand on any that persist in attacking the dukes. Still, you're a better player than me, I'm sure you'll think of something...

Roliahv is impressed. Imoen has cleared the traps while the spiders and ettercaps have fallen like flies. If only the same could be said for the next part.

Rasaad hangs back but despite this he is poisoned and Viconia is in the middle of summoning a skeleton so won't be able to cure it. All the green potions are in the potion case so Roliahv takes one out. The potion is glugged and Rasaad moves back - then dies.

After a couple of seconds I realise Roliahv glugged instead of Rasaad. Oops.
Posted Image

Anyway, Roliavh is aura'd, and poisoned. Viconia cures his poison twice as he continues fighting and he glugs a couple of blue potions to stay alive. Neera has used a scorcher and several Magic Missiles.

The battle is won, just need to pick up the pieces. Scrappy.

Rasaad is trying desperately to meet his maker in the search for religious enlightenment.
Here he gets a helping hand, packed with Spiders Bane.
Posted Image

Neira had cast mirror image > ghost armour > Aid (courtesy of Viconia), unfortunately Roliahv then switches targets. Imoen was safely hidden to block Roliahv in. Viconia summons a skelly to briefly fill the monks boots.

This could be quite a long run as I'm checking out various quests I tend to skip nowadays. So far the BG:EE beta has worked fine for most of them. Here is Seniyad being tested with a Blackguard special ability, absorb health.

Roliahv observes Eldoth preparing some special arrows before we kill Peter of the North. More wine - why we've suddenly lost the taste for it as the bard stirs it with the other end of his arrows.

Faldorn wishes to travel with us so Eldoth leaves shortly after joining us. She suggests clearing an area at a time, Neera shouting out that the Thayvian practice ground should be first. There are no more wizards there, but a cursed scroll is retrieved for Fahrington. One area down.

Perhaps we should go find some equipment for Faldorn?

Noted.

Apparently monks should not be able to use mage and bard items (source: Gaider via Dorner).

I'm still not sure about cleric wands.

Thanks Gate. I did a google search for "monk female Forgotten Realms." This was the coolest picture I found.

I'm thinking I'll go with that one or in the alternative stick with Ashra's original portrait.

Best,

A.

EDIT: Actually, I've decided I don't like that one. Still searching...

Ok. Let's try this again. My new and improved monk: Ashra.

Proficiencies: Daggers, Darts

Personal Item: The Flower of Athek (courtesy of Aasim, with minor modification)

Ashra found this red glowing ioun stone while exploring the ruins near her home, Candlekeep. She has kept it close to her heart ever since- knowing somewhere deep that stumbling upon it was no coincidence, but rather an omen of things to come. Upon concentrating on the glowing light within the stone, one can see the insignia of a dragon mark. No one knows for sure how it came to be.

Well I've always thought that you made your own luck Alesia, so The Flower of Athek seems very appropriate for Ashra.

Another area crossed off with 20 zombies flattened, a simple matter for us now. Wenric hands over 150gp.

Osmadi and Corsone are dealt with then we clear a horde of gibberlings out, only for Baeloth to drop out of the sky. Imoen is dumped but by the time she reaches Roliavh Faldorn has been stripped of her gear and makes way instead.

(was going to enjoy Faldorn in the party but ought to try the new NPC's out. Here's her final act in the party, didn't even get to give her dread wolf an outing)
Posted Image

& Baeloth looks somewhat extreme. Level 6 sorcerer with 36hp, con bonus gives a total of 6hp/level so he's maxxed out. 50% drow resistance to magic and a robe of the evil archmagi, 3 extra level 2 spells, 1 level 3 and 1 level 4. Not sure what the use of the magic ring does though - looks like 1-2 damage to self though elemental damage (cold, electricity, etc.)

Viconia has remained at the Friendly Arm Inn hoping to pull Dorn. She's probably not his type (I always find it difficult to dispose of her but the new NPC's need to be experienced. So far as I know Imoen's place is safe).

After a few days travelling around the realms we are ambushed on the way to Nashkel Mine. The ambushers are caught in a pincer movement and Dorn agrees to travel with us even if the only armour we have spare is green and ankheggy (beeline to Drasus methinks). Imoen is worrying that the other two people Dorn is after will try and get the jump on us.

In hindsight;
Obvious charname for these NPC's is a cleric/thief. As it stands we have no healing and Imoen should dual-class because Baeloth / Neera magic overload is crying out to be augmented...That may be my next party run.

Dorn shakes his head and asks if we must visit a temple every time Rasaad chooses to lead the attack against a trio of ogre berserkers. He'll get used to it...

We almost reach Cloakwood mine despite two ambushes, only for Dorn to suggest we should visit Nashkel instead - err we've just been there to get the monk breathing, remember. The look in his eyes implies it would be wise to defer to his request so back we go through another ambush, Rasaad almost dying again from spider bites (another 200xp and he'll get a level, hopefully with more than 1hp this time...)

From there we head east, in search of Kryll who appears to be practicing necromancy. Dorn warns us to be careful but Rasaad is repeating the mistakes of his brother and racing ahead. No matter, as Kryll and her undead are no match for us. Rasaad gets +5hp for his efforts.
Posted Image

There is a note describing where we can find this Simmeon so we set off. Rasaad gets another couple of arrows in an ambush so we rest for a week or two, allowing Dorn to initiate a few dialogues. Roliahv is getting a bit uncomfortable about where this is heading but time will tell.

Simmeon is close but not close enough - it appears we must do something about the lock-down imposed upon the city.

Roliahv tries a poison arrow when a hamadryad turns hostile. We're somewhere in the trees and Baeloth uses Magic Missiles to prevent her from teleporting away.
Posted Image

On to a wyvern cave - Roliahv using boots, cloak and girdle to minimise piercing attacks. Baeolth hastes us as we enter - why didn't he do this for earlier battles. Roliahv is boxed in meaning one wyvern targets and poisons Dorn. He retreats to glug a green potion and returns as Rasaad switches from sling to fist. Our melee and Magic Missiles soon have the cave cleared, until we rest and another wyvern arrives. We rest outside after killing it and head to the hidden mine.

Baeloth hastes us all and hurls a fireball to the point where Imoen has indicated. Roliahv one-shots Rezdan with a poison arrow as Dorn and Rasaad close on Kysus. Imoen and Roliahv both shoot arrows at him too, while Neera softens him up with Magic Missiles.  Dorn lands a critical and down goes the mage. Drasus is next, Dorn killing him too. Roliahv accounts for Genthore with mounting poisons.

Roliahv, Blackguard 5. 65hp. 229 kills, Greater Basilisk.
Rasaad, Monk 6. 30hp. 59 kills, Seniyad.
Neera, Wild Mage 5. 16hp. 24 kills, Sirine.
Baeloth, Sorceror 6. 36hp. 4 kills, Hamadryad.
Imoen, Thief 6. 37hp. 83 kills, Lesser Basilisk.
Dorn, Blackguard 4. 30hp. 10 kills, Kysus.

Update 1,
I've never felt more like a damsel in distress than I have this week… first dad gets himself killed.

I told my half-sister to take a hike and regrated it when I looked at my gear; a bow, helmet, sleep, friends & 2 stacks of arrows against the whole world… plus something evil is probably stalking me right now.

Posted Image

Scratch the probably… a wizard named Tal something tried to kill me as I entered FAI but luckily I had company along. Traveling in groups does have advantages so when a Druid and Fighter husband and wife team offered to escort me the rest of the way I accepted.

Sidequest;
Posted Image

We picked up a Ranger as muscle… seriously all bran and very little brains but the catch was we had to rescue his Mage GF from a Gnoll fortress. I'm not learning much with this group except how to keep my bow ready but I must admit to feeling safer at night without wondering what the extra herbs that are going into my dinner are?

At first I thought this was you writing in your voice rather than a journal entry written in your character's voice. I felt really bad for you.

Anyhoo. Best of luck with your run!

A.

Unless something has changed in the EE the boots and cloak only protect against missile attacks, though the girdle helps with piercing melee attacks as well.

Roliahv grabs the Boots of Speed from the corpse of Drasus - Rasaad might finally take less of the battle flak.

Hareishan is the first serious opposition we run into. Roliahv poisons her as Neera sends many of her guards into a dangerous slumber.

Natasha is next, followed by their jailor who is an ogre mage. The force of our attacks quickly overwhelm them too.

Imoen removes four traps and hasted poison means Davaeorn is dead. He didn't even think to talk, go hostile or teleport away (I meant to load the pre-fight save "on the side" to check this in detail but overwrote it instead, oops).

Edit; that's no way to test a beta. I side-lined a save from after Hareishan and went to Davaeorn. This time he mono-logged and started casting away. Rasaad was dominated and Dorn held but Baeloth got the kill with a Melf Acid Arrow. Not sure why he didn't react last time, almost as though I fake-talked him...which I didn't.

My guess is the script that triggers his dialog is set to fire when your main character 1, comes into view or 2, within X range.

No, both times Imoen was sneaking in to disable traps and everybody else was over the guard corpse.

Anyway, another new encounter. Rasaad tried a new survival technique out, running around in a panic. It worked too, Neera was silenced which meant she had to melee (has wands for emergency only, no ranged weapons).

Good job Dorn and Roliahv are both unflappable in the face of fear.

Xochi, elf wild mage (update 1)

After finishing with Cusp I generated a new character, settling for the first roll with Xochi.

She made decent progress last night and has just got to level 8.
Posted Image
She's cleared most of the wilderness areas and will probably go and do the Nashkel mine next.

Xochi has not been shy about using spells, although she only knows 1 second level spell (invisibility) and none higher than that.  Magic missile, blindness and sleep have been all she's needed, with a bit of additional power available from half a dozen uses of the necklace of missiles (like this one to finish off Kirian's party).  She's also picked up wands of monster summoning and frost, but not seen a need to use those yet.

As might be expected from regular use of spells she's had a fair number of surges, but none have done direct damage to her (in fact her relatively low HPs have remained fully intact to date).  There was one potentially game ending surge here and this one was a definite pain - costing her about 20,000 of her hard-earned gold.

Her quasit familiar has been in action all the time.  Against weaker enemies it melees, while stronger opponents are distracted while Xochi casts and slings.  I've also allowed familiar cheese, where the familiar attacks opponents with scripts that don't allow them to react until they see a character.  There have been about half-a-dozen of those; the most powerful was the doomsayer (I don't remember doing that previously to him), where I decided not to risk a wild surge when using magic missiles in confined quarters - it took a while to kill it as the quasit only hit with criticals.

Does anyone remember Raphaelle? Nope, me neither. Last time I looked she'd found some sneaky boots, cant remember what else because it was on Friday, and on Saturday I bought BG:EE, so I imagine she's gonna disappear into the pit of games started but never finished.

In the mean time, I'm blasting through vanilla BG:EE no-reload no-sidequest with an old favourite, a halfling fighter/thief.

Posted Image

Smoke stole everything that wasn't nailed down in Candlekeep, then headed east, backstabbed Xzar but couldn't finish Monty, grabbed a diamond, east again, ring & belts, south to Beregost, met the new wild mage, killed her attackers and sent her to the FAI, sold gear, got attacked by a dwarf in a bar, and is about to hit up the estate in the north east. Hm. Shoulda made him neutral not good. Anyway, after that we head south, grab boots, grab ankheg plate, get a +2 longsword, and kill Mulaney.

I'm not soloing per se, last time I did this I added Coran after the bandit camp, then continued to BG2, soloed until I rescued Imoen, then continued as a duo until ToB, where Sarevok joined us. I do remember we were kinda underpowered against vanilla Mellisan, but perhaps that was because I'd only ever played the ascension ending, so didn't know what to expect from vanilla.
