Before going to the Nashkel mine went to High Hedge in search of a mirror image scroll. Two were bought and fluffed, so for the last one Xochi drank the red potion to make sure of it - also learning all the other spells Thalantyr sells at the same time.
At the mine the quasit beat up Mulahey and did then did the same to Nimbul - will he ever learn not to keep missile weapons equipped when being attacked!
At the bandit camp 10 blindness spells incapacitated Venkt & Hakt. Britik saved, but Xochi was able to kill him in a web before turning to the others. A skull trap cast at Venkt failed to explode though so Xochi used the potion of magic blocking to open the chest safely before running out past it.
Went through the Cloakwood invisible before 3 webs and 4 skull traps made a mess of Drasus & co.
Down to Daveorn where the wand of frost was used for the first time on the battle horrors - I was surprised at how slowly it cast the first time though and Xochi took her first damage from a horror as a result. Protected by a green scroll she had no problem in finishing Daveorn off.
Before going into the city Xochi visited the coast where more webs / skull traps cleared out some sirenes (getting her final level there on the way to the constitution tome). She also retrieved the tome from Durlag's Tower (using invisibility / green amulet).
In the city she just collected the tomes without any trouble and has now arrived back at Candlekeep.
There were no potentially deadly surges in that session. In fact she had one rather nice one when she found a protection from energy scroll in her pocket

First up, Meklin - who is after Neera, or more precisely...200gp she stole from him. The paladin in Roliahv almost pays up but the Blackguard taint wins out (have a pile of money but paying seems the easy option). The ensuing cutscene turns Meklin into an umber hulk before Roliahv turns him into chunks.
The Helm of Balduran is retrieved and after a rest the Brawlers are Undermountained with a haste / slow / poison strategy. Abala the nymph is freed, Degrodel has his house emptied, turning hostile and attacking Imoen so we kill him then raise her from the dead.
Rasaad and Imoen panic at the sight of Sunin and his guards but the danger is over soon afterwards.

No cloak. Check the dialogue and wrong option was given. 100% certain I clicked on the right one so need to retest that outside the NR challenge.

Looted the Candlekeep tomes using minor globe and polymorph self jelly for protection. There was a nasty moment when Xochi was held by a surge trying to knock the tomb with the strength tome in - she hadn't killed the spiders at that point, so if they had wandered her death would have been rapid.
Back in the city Slythe was beaten up by the familiar. At the palace I didn't really want Xochi to cast any spells near the guards due to the danger from surges. However, the dopplegangers concentrated heavily on the dukes. One was disabled by malison + emotion, but none of them were affected by darts of stunning and I was concerned about the damage Belt was taking - hence Xochi used improved invisibility on him. From that point the remaining dopplegangers were quickly cleaned up. However, then a mini-disaster struck. I halted the fight after the last doppleganger was dead to write up what had happened and forgot to check where the familiar was when restarting - at least Xochi's got no bonus HPs to lose!
She went invisibly through the maze to the temple and pulled Sarevok out with a bullet. I decided it would only be fair to give him a chance so Xochi cast throughout the contest - getting through 10 magic missiles and a couple of acid arrows - in between summoning 8 lots of monsters. Casting in proximity to Sarevok meant that a hold effect surge would certainly have been fatal, but no surges at all occurred and Sarevok returned to the scrap heap of failed godlings.
Xochi duly reported back to Belt and has arrived in Athkatla for a new set of challenges.

Edit: the red constitution figure is the result of the dead familiar - the loss of constitution gets reported as if it were temporary, although the effect is permanent.

I lost concentration for a moment and attempted to open a trapped chest without taking precautions - getting poisoned as a result. I had plenty of healing potions so could have used those safely, but I decided it would be more in the spirit of a wild mage for Xochi to try and cure herself with her Bhaal ability - this was the result.

I've always thought that it's grossly unfair that a wild mage can get a surge while using Bhaal powers, especially those clearly of divine origin - so I can't claim the surge was a surprise.
Incidentally, in uploading the screenshot I noticed that Xochi had not taken her 10th level - I'll never know now if a couple of extra HPs could have saved her ...

More jobs. Lantanera (don't do this very often and can't read my own writing!), Lusselyn, Mr Shade (no pantaloons for him), Brielbara / Yago, 5 ogre mage bounty hunters, Varci Roaringhorn, Petrine, Ramazith, Rinnie, Drelik / Jardak, Cyrdemac, Arkion / Nemphre > Ordulinian, sewer ogre mage.
Roliahv is ready to go but everybody else has lots of other things on their to-do lists. Sigh.

The Seven Suns is de-doppled. Then the Merchants Consortium gets more of the same (only I show the evidence to Aldeth instead of Brandilar and we all troop upstairs. After killing the doppelgangers neither Aldeth or Brandilar will acknowledge the doppelgangers are all dead).
I save the game for continuation here. They handed over the reward when Brandilar was shown the evidence, and handed it over again when I retried showing it to Aldeth. So I'll continue without the Kondar sword either - not an issue as nobody uses bastard swords in this party.
Will need to check the beta problem reports to see if this type of issue is common.

I thought I would have another go with Xochi. I should have had time in an early morning session to fly X2 through BG1 and she had made good initial progress in clearing over half the wilderness without taking any damage. However, after picking up Samuel I took a slight short-cut in trying to journey to the FAI in one stage. That meant a day and 2 hours had passed (and her invisibility had run out) when she stumbled into a bandit ambush ... and failed to stumble out again.Gate70 wrote...

She had made a good start and got up to level 5 without problems, but got caught out trying to help Charleston Nib. I expected the diggers to be subject to sleep, but they appeared to be immune (presumably religious frenzy). As a result the quasit was left in a vulnerable position. The first digger got a critical on the quasit - he tried to run away, but another spear lashed off for a successive critical.
I would have expected that to kill Xochi, as her base HPs were only 10 and she should have lost half of the familiar's 24 HPs. However, the engine seemed to be set to protect the last HP (in the same way as a character at L1 should not be killed by a single blow from full HPs).

I'll still retire her here though and consider tomorrow whether to have another go.

I don't think even if you leveled up it would have helped against the wild surge, I thought regular wild surges do not get wild mage's level added, that it only is added when wild mage uses Nahal's reckless dweomer, since she tries to manipulate the chaos directly. A regular wild surge is just that of an accident, so bad results are very possible, regardless of wild mage's level. Chaos shield would help in regular wild surges, though. ^^
A level up would have given you more hit points and possibly a better save vs poison to prevent poisoning, maybe.

That's right. Although it shouldn't be possible you can stack chaos shield (and improved chaos shield) using sequencers / triggers / contingencies which can eliminate the chance of a bad result at higher levels. Setting up the sequencer / trigger / contingency in the first place could generate a surge so it's correct to say that you can never be 100% safe when using a wild mage as an active caster.Silver-star wrote...

Could have done, although all the poison traps in that dungeon don't allow a save anyway. Mirror images and jelly form would have offered protection, though the poison wouldn't have been dangerous anyway if I had used healing potions.A level up would have given you more hit points and possibly a better save vs poison to prevent poisoning, maybe.

Noted. I've never played a wild mage so I'm not personally familiar with the mechanics.
Based on my reading of the source I was drawing on, I was under the impression that the level was added to all wild surge rolls, however, upon rereading, it seems that you and Grond0 may be correct. Here's the relevant quote with the key phrase bolded and underlined.
Every time a Wild Mage casts a spell, there is a 5% chance that the spell will cause a Wild Surge. A Wild Surge is also guaranteed to happen every time they cast Nahal's Reckless Dweomer. Every time there is such a Surge, the game rolls a D100, and adds three numbers to it: The EXP Level of the Wild Mage that caused the Surge, + 15 (if they have Chaos Shield running), + 25 (if they have Improved Chaos Shield active).
It's unclear, but the word "such" may be being used to restrict the sentence to cases where Nahal's has been cast.
Of course, it's also possible that the source may be inaccurate.
In any event, I defer to those who have direct experience with wild mages here. Apologies everyone!
Best,
A.

Good luck Corey!
In vanilla monks are much better suited for soloing than they are in my install. Most of the concerns I had were due to gameplay elements introduced by mods. You may find that the class works out well for you.

Yes. That's the safest approach in many early encounters.
Once again, good luck!

Rather than hang around X4 got underway straight after work and has made good progress so far. Her route has been:
- blinded and shot Firebead (level 2).
- Xzar and Montaron disposed of on the way to Shoal (level 3).
- at High Hedge fluffed 2 invisibility scrolls and left the 3rd (and last) for later.
- in Beregost talked to Marl (level 4), tried to give a book back to Firebead, but he realised too quickly that he was dead. Clicked on the wrong conversation option with Garrick (Silke was still blinded and shot, but missed out on a potion of defense). Karlat and Perdue, some spiders, Mirianne and Zhurlong completed Xochi's work in the town.
- down to Nashkel to collect (and store) some ankheg armour, talk to Noober and beat up Neira before acquiring the red potion at the Carnival.
- Xochi managed to get back to High Hedge without a bandit ambush and learn the invisibility scroll (and a few others) using the red potion.
- now travelling invisibly she acquired a belt collection on the way to the FAI. On arrival dealt with Tarnesh & Joia, doubled up L1 spells, returned Landrin's goods and collected some pantaloons.
- used invisibility and strength to ransack an ankheg nest and return the farmer's son. Punished some fishermen for a priestess (level 5).
Up to this point HPs were excellent. X4 had 31 HPs at L5 (including 12 for the familiar), which is only 1 below the maximum. That contrasts sharply with her predecessors, who all had low HPs - X3 had 22 at the same level (2 above the minimum). That's not particularly likely to make the difference between life and death, but it's comforting all the same.
- back to the Carnival where Oopah, Vitiare and Zordral were victims. Xochi continued to store valuable equipment to avoid losing large quantities of gold this time.
- Hulrik put in a good word for the xvart-killer, while Prism's last words were praise for a defender of artists.
- Meilum proved no better than Greywolf at dodging spells while blind. That encounter proved the wisdom of storing items though (only about 2,000 gold lost this time).
- Xochi laboured up to the FAI with Samuel on her back (breaking her journey to reapply invisibility this time).
- journeying to the basilisk area I started attacking the temple wolf pack, but ran away after a dread wolf disappeared. Xochi used her sling on the basilisks (level 6), rescued Tamah and watched Korax deal with Mutamin. She then blinded Lindin and Baerin before successfully attacking the party (level 7).
Up to this point she's remained undamaged, and I'm hopeful she'll be able to keep that going all the way this time.

Boots of stealth are nice to haves Corey. Arbane is handy for Amnish monks in a fix.
