Felix - human wild mage (update 2)
Felix continues to make good progress and is about to enter Baldur's Gate.
The session started at the Nashkel mine. After going down invisibly, the fairy dragon nibbled away at Mulahey until he finally collapsed - that took a while as it needed 18 to hit and only does 1-2 damage.
Nimbul was also nibbled, but that was far faster due to his carelessly having a missile weapon equipped. Tranzig is scripted differently and retaliates when hit, so Felix summoned some wolf allies for him.
At the bandit camp Felix entered the main tent invisibly. The chest there can't be overlapped so he grabbed the contents (using boots of grounding and robe of electrical resistance) and quickly moved back out of sight of Raemon before he was noticed. The fairy dragon then renewed his invisibility to allow an easy exit.
Felix made his way to Ulgoth's Beard to buy the cloak of displacement and green amulet. He would have helped Tenya recover her bowl, but she proved a bit too feeble to take it back. On the way back he raided the ankheg treasure - the fairy dragon starting to cast invisibility before he grabbed things so that they disappeared too quickly for the nearby ankheg to react.
At the mine a stinking cloud scroll and a couple of fireballs killed the mages before Felix ran away from Drasus. Coming back, some summoned hobgoblins and a couple of wand scorchers proved too much for Drasus and Genthore.
After going invisibly down to Daveorn, some gnolls and wands of frost / fire cleared battle horrors. A potion of magic blocking allowed Felix to survive Daveorn's initial spells and he was finished off in melee.

In the City Felix learned a few scrolls (not too many as it's a pain scrolling through loads of spells to cast using NRD). He picked up the dexterity tome and then went to get the wisdom one - with the help of some worgs against Jalantha and hobgoblins against Marek (though the fairy dragon failed to get out of the way there against a bouncing lightning bolt and needed to save to survive).
Next, Felix was after the intelligence tome, but suffered there as a result of my stubborness. He needed a strength boost in order to bash Ramazith's door open and had the choice of a strength scroll or potion. In reality either would have been fine as he had more potions available than he would use from this point; therefore he should have used the potion as that's safe, whereas the scroll is subject to surges.
However, in RP terms I felt the scroll made more sense. I also think it's a mistake in the engine that scrolls are subject to surges whereas spells cast by other items are not and tend to deliberately court that danger rather than avoiding it. As a result he read the scroll ... and perished in a fireball. It was too quick to see what happened, but Felix had 49 HPs and was wearing the ring of fire resistance. Therefore I'd be surprised if the fireball killed him directly; more likely it killed the fairy dragon and the consequential loss of HPs finished Felix off. Earlier in the run I practised safe spell casting and kept the familiar away (or in Felix's backpack) on the rare occasions when he used a scroll, but I tend to get a bit lackadaisical as a run progresses and I think that lack of discipline proved costly here.

Well Lucky's group made it past the thieve's maze, except with one problem - Minsc was slain by the skeletal warriors. We don't have money to raise him, so he will have to stay dead...
In the Undercity, we buffed Khalid, most important being greenstone amulet, fire resistance and potion of absorption. He charged with his bastard sword +1 while the rest of the party poured in two rounds of fireballs. This sufficiently weakened the enemies that ranged fire was enough to mop up the survivors.
Time for Sarevok himself. We tried a new strategy - we purposely tried to spawn the battle horror trap on the right so the party can stay there - this got Lucky to level 9, surprisingly. Then Coran buffed and tried to solo enemies - he failed. Thus the party tried to assist vs. Semaj, who was close, but we failed to knock him out and worse, Sarevok's entire crew came! Semaj's tattoo of power were killing us too, it debuffed most of us except Coran, and then Semaj cast chaos! Only Coran and Lucky had control. Lucky gulped an invisibility potion and got out of the way. Coran tried to get some distance and take a few potshots with his bow. Imoen, Khalid and Dynaheir were all quickly slain.
Coran tried to solo once again, but failed and even spawned an extra battle horror (great). He decided to regroup and went invisible. This was a great play, as a battle horror and Tazok slew Angelo and Semaj for their area effects! (Semaj had cast a cloudkill). Coran waited, since Tazok was dying to the cloudkill - not quite dead, but near death - a single backstab finished him.

Since Sarevok was near the top of the area with a battle horror, Coran drew the battle horror that was by Tazok to Lucky, and together they finished this one, mainly with the help of a paralyzation wand. Lucky went invisible by potion and stayed out of sight.
Coran tried to get to work once more - he managed to separate Sarevok and the Battle Horror and backstabbed the battle horror dead. Just Sarevok now - Coran was much better one-on-one and sure enough managed to backstab Sarevok dead!

Lucky is advancing to BG 2 - he will have a party there as well.

Congratulations, Corey! Good luck and safe surges in Amn.
Thanks Serg! Will be doing the same strategy, namely not targeting Lucky with any of his spells if at all possible.

This thread was looking a bit empty so I thought I would amuse you with another attempt to see how far I can get with Heldig - another wild mage restricted to only casting his spells through NRD.
So far, he's done a few chores in Candlekeep (including summoning a familiar at his first attempt), left Xzar and Montaron lying in the road and had a profitable encounter with Shoal.

Heldig - human wild mage (update 2)
Travelling invisibly, Heldig went on a collection spree:
- wand of frost from Nashkel mine
- ring of fire resistance from Samuel's area
- potions of invisibility & freedom and wand of monster summoning from valley of the tombs (overlapping containers to pick them up without breaking invisibility)
- ring of wizardry from FAI
- ankheg armour from Nashkel
- loot from Ulcaster ruins using green scroll against fire traps. I was disappointed there as none of the loot on the floor was there (spiders, jellies, wand of fire wand) - that may have been due to going in before speaking to the ghost
- loot from pirate cave (can't overlap the container there, so the familiar re-cast invisibility while Heldig picked stuff up)
- similarly, looted the ankheg nest by disappearing again before the nearby ankheg could attack
The intention was to do all that exploration without any fighting, but I forgot to go invisible again when coming out of the FAI and had to rely on a friendly guard to stop Tarnesh chasing Heldig (by that stage his MM had been shared between Heldig and the familiar, so he probably would have been OK anyway).
With the proceeds from unwanted equipment bought the wand of sleep and green scroll of protection from petrification. Before heading to the basilisk area Heldig wanted to get Meilum's bracers: on the way he stopped off for a word with Arghain.

Enter: Pyrius the Sun Soul Monk!
I haven't played Monk much in Baldurs Gate, barely touching one in BG 2 so this will be a welcome change. I never did like the omnipotent Quivering Palm nor the Stun skill - which the Sun Soul Monk does not have - hooray!
So far we've reached level 4 and are about to enter the Naskhel Mines.
The party consists of Minsc, Dorn, Pyrius, Imoen, Edwin and Branwen (which will be replaced with Quayle at the Gate). I will probably dismiss Minsc for a while later, seeing as how I need to complete Rashaads quests for the Monk items. So far we've gotten one casualty, as Neeira managed to get chunked by an Ogre Berserker, oh well!
Wish me luck out there!

Heldig - human wild mage (update 3)
A couple of blasts from the wand of frost softened Meilum up so it didn't take too long to dart him to death (with the invisible familiar running interference).
Around Beregost, Mirianne's letter was handed over and Perdue got his sword back (nice positioning from the familiar made Karlat an easy victim), but Zhurlong's boots were sold. Algernon was a victim of Heldig's desire to lower his reputation.
Bassilus went down easily to a first lot of summoned monsters, but his undead refused to die so the familiar quickly jumped in the backpack, while more ogres helped the undead become dead - before going on to give Zargal the same treatment.
Moving down to the Cloakwood, Sendai became a first victim of the wand of paralysation. A single blast from the wand of frost was too much for Vax, but I didn't want to destroy Zal's equipment so he was also paralysed.
Heldig felt it was his duty to enforce the Dangerous Dogs Act on Rufie and his owner (didn't have a magical melee weapon for the latter, but 7 darts of wounding did the trick after he was paralysed).

Haha, Corey - in case you've forgotten; I've never gotten much further than Rayic Gethras in BG 2. I actually believe I have never gotten past him, as I always take breaks and return to fight him - forgetting how easily he can kill you. I think all my parties have either died there or gotten killed in the Slaver's Halls in the first act.
I haven't been to the underdark in several years.

Actually I remember you donig fairly well, except you kept dieing in the Planar Prison. At one point, you had like 6 runs in a row all die there - hopefully you got that part mastered now...

Ah, of course - that is correct! I had forgotten the fact that I made it there most of the time - but I also remember quite a few Rayic Gethras deaths as well. Still, I'm hoping this crew can get to the underdark and beyond.
With a party, my favorite method of dealing with Rayic is to send Minsc up. He would be buffed with all buffs we could spare: death ward, free action, CC, pro fire/lightning, resist fear. Minsc could use any elemental damage weapons that he had (like StoneFire/Frostweaver) to try to interrupt spells and he would also sometimes berserk - he would always win (in vanilla). If you play SCS that may not work though...

Heldig carried on clearing a path through the Cloudpeaks - mainly just using darts, though some ogres helped him out against Borda and the wand of paralysation was used on a cave bear when Heldig was slowed by carrying too much loot.
Melicamp was successfully revived before Heldig made his way to the basilisk area. The monsters were darted before he recruited Korax to beat up Mutamin for him. Guided by an invisible familiar Korax then managed to paralyse all of Kirian's party - with the help of some wolves running interference.
Clearing up a loose end Heldig put Arghain's half-ogres out of their misery before dragging an ettercap out of its cave for darting.

That got him to level 7: miserable HPs up to now - 39 to date compared to the minimum possible of 36. The wand of sleep made saving Arabelle for Hulrik easy.
Went invisibly through the Nashkel mine. For a change allowed Mulahey to talk, but he failed to get a spell off under assault from a scorcher. Emerging back into the open a charge each from the wands of monster summoning and paralysation made the amazons easy prey.

At the Bandit Camp Heldig opened the chest in the main tent (under the protection of a potion of absorption) and got back out of sight before Raemon noticed. The wand of paralysation was burned in disabling Raemon, then some ogres took out Venkt, while a scorcher dealt with Hakt and severely wounded Britik.
With horror learned as a Bhaal power Heldig set about raising his reputation. Returning Farmer Brun's son and Joia's ring made a start; then Tamah's statue came alive. While buying a green scroll at Beregost temple to do that Heldig also cleared out the wolf pack there.

Firebead got a new library book, while Bjornin was pleased to hear the fate of a clan of half-ogres. The wand of sleep is coming towards the end of its useful life, but was helpful in addressing Ardrouine's worries. Brage offered a lift back to Nashkel, where Heldig reported Mulahey's fate to the mayor and admitted to Oublek he was not Greywolf.
Getting Samuel to medical attention in time got Heldig to reputation 19 and the final point was obtained from Prism. There was a close shave there though when the familiar was running Greywolf round and didn't move quite fast enough - forcing Heldig to quickly intervene himself before finishing the job. That also got Heldig to level 8, with yet another 3 HPs.

With just over 70,000 gold available, Heldig bought a few scrolls at High Hedge, along with the Claw of Kazgoroth and the Robe of the Good Archmagi. On the way to Ulgoth's Beard he killed some fishermen and restored a bowl to Tenya (using low damage attacks to not risk her dying from the wand of frost this time). Once there he bought the Cloak of Displacement, Green Amulet, invisibility ring and a couple more scrolls, but didn't have quite enough money to recharge the wand of monster summoning (should have gone somewhere cheaper).
To raise a bit more cash Heldig took a couple of belts off an ogre (also found a ring stashed in a stone nearby). Then south to the Carnival where Oopah failed to chase the fairy dragon down.

Vitiare got nibbled to death by the fairy dragon, but nibbling stopped just before death against Zordral so that he could kill Bentha - Zordral was finished off with a wand MM. Heldig also picked up a couple of oddly coloured potions from a potion seller.
Now with just enough to repurchase the wand of monster summoning, Heldig returned to Ulgoth's Beard to do that. Before leaving he used the wand to get a free ring from Dushai.
The last action of the session was at Durlag's Tower where some battle horrors were blasted out of the way before a first use of the Green Amulet allowed Heldig to safely pick up the wisdom tome.
