Sorry about Chit @Grond0, I think your cautious approach is the wiser if you ever want to complete the trilogy on no-reload...

Sorry to hear that. Are the Wild Surge tables completely random or is it pseudorandom, does anybody have any insight in that?

The effects do seem reasonably random to me, though I've not tested them properly

Sorry about Chit @Grond0, I think your cautious approach is the wiser if you ever want to complete the trilogy on no-reload...

Indubitably, but mixing things up is fun as well :D.

Chip - elven wild mage (1st and final update)

I started playing another game, but was quickly getting wild withdrawal sypmtoms and couldn't resist coming back for yet another try.  So here's another chip off the old block.

Following Blackraven's advice, this time my intention is to play as safely as possible.  To try and maintain interest in BG1 I'll aim to complete the game without Chip taking any damage - that's definitely possible, although I haven't managed it for a while.

So far Chip has picked up frost, fire and monster summoning wands, but hasn't yet used any of them.  Instead she's relied on her trusty darts, with the odd bit of help from her familiar.  She's travelled everywhere invisibly with the single exception of returning Samuel to the FAI.  In order not to have to rest on the way there she did the first leg to Nashkel visible in order to be invisible in case of bandit ambushes on the main road.  Regrettably a skeleton archer ambush triggered while travelling to Nashkel and she had to use her only invisibility potion (taken from the revenant tomb).  That was actually a bit of lazy play as you can take a rest on the way to return Samuel without him dying.

RecordL5.jpg

Edit: definitely time for a little break.  I was finding it a bit tedious and took a risk by attacking Sendai's archers after they were already hostile.  I thought Delgod was focusing on the familiar, but he ignored it and managed a snap-shot on Chip just before she got out of range.

Ledcan the fighter/mage - update 4

Ledcan's team has made a lot of progress since the last update. We've done many of the high experience areas (basilisks (both in Durlag's and east of Beregost Temple), sirines, ankhegs, vampiric wolves). We've even done Durlag's, though not the lower levels of it. We had taken no deaths up to this point, but we got attacked by ghasts from two directions and Ledcan panicked - he used a scorcher on the ghast - it did kill it, but it also killed Hanna! Later I realized Hanna could have held the ghast...oops.

For harder fights, I would use animate dead friends, silences and our raging berserker. In our early battles, commands, blindness and hold persons rules the day. Our two archers (Ledcan and Paja) often cut down enemies before they even come close. Paja does do backstabs when applicable. She often hides in the shadows anyways, just so the enemies don't target her. If encountering large groups of weaker enemies, Hanna will switch to her warhammer to keep them occupied.

Ledran knows skulltrap, but usually just opt to use a wand of fire or necklace of missiles. Now that he's wearing the robe of the good archmagi, he rarely puts on armor, and he's had decent HP rolls, and uses all the missile defence items (belt of piercing, boots of avoidance, cloak of displacement), so he hasn't worn his heavy armor in a long time, though he wore it almost always in the early going. Hanna, on the other hands, has had some pretty atrocious HP rolls. She could have had 70 HP, but only has 39. Paja is OK, with 41/56 possible. Joshua not too bad, with 79/105 possible.

After we finish off a few ghasts in Durlag's Tower, will probably hit the Bandit Camp. Incidentally, Paja finally using shadow armor, Joshua has been using full plate. Eventually Hanna will use Khosann's full plate.

Hanna, level 7 human priest of lathander, 39 HP
Joshua, level 7 dwarven berserker, 79 HP
Ledcan, level 6 fighter, level 5 mage, 65 HP
Paja, level 7 thief, 41 HP

Chit - postscript

Thanks - but it seemed that Chit had used up her allocation of luck in BG1.  She was continuing to cast spells without worrying about the consequences and the consequences caught up with her :P.

The problem was that she was just a chit of a girl! Sorry. I couldn't resist it!

Corthief IV the solo thief entering trilogy no-reload challenge...

Ledcan is still alive and his run is still going, but I needed a change of pace - this is both solo and a non-fighter, thus gets me out of my rut. He is level 5, running away from most things naturally. Here's his equipment so far:

CorthiefIVequipment_zps34f56fe7.png

Getting Melium's bracers was pretty tough, partly because Corthief became tired right when the battle started, and partly because it took literally like 20-30 min. of running around a rock, pausing, shooting, repeat until Melium finally was finished - worth it though.

I fought Tarnesh at a pretty low level, but luckily Corthief's backstab caused Tarnesh's morale to break and MM wand finished that assassin. Karlat was finished via hiding around corners and backstabs.

Corthief died almost right out of Candlekeep (he let an ogre get too close), so had to restart from start once.

Corthief IV

NE, Elf, Thief

STR 18 DEX 19 CON 17 INT 11 WIS 4 CHA 18

* Quarterstaff

* short bow

* two handed weapon style

Glasya, half-elven Sorceress with random spell picks, adventuring in chapter 5 with Branwen, Minsc, Imoen, Dynaheir and Coran

Xzar interlude
I left off Dynaheir in Shop of Silence (which is always my base camp in the city) and took the crazy necromancer along. I hadn't counted on this, though, that of all the possible sewer entrances, I had to choose the one that dumped us right by the sewerfolk:
Glasya087XzarvsS1_zps9f92a9fc.jpg
Glasya088XzarvsS2_zps2ca2869a.jpg

Guess I'll let Branwen do the tanking as usual. They can only hit her on criticals, and I hoped that she would kill the ghoul sewerfolk (I assume it acts like a ghoul) before getting hit by it. Glasya threw an Emotion for good measure. This should be easy despite getting surprised. But I hadn't counted on the SPIDERS!

Glasya089sewerfolkfightandspiders_zps8aa

Right next to Xzar and Coran, yikes! And more of them are coming!

Glasya090sewerfolkandspiders2_zpsa98a9c8

Not easy to maneuver here. As you can see, I let Minsc and Imoen tank one spider each, Coran and Glasya pull back a little. Xzar, not knowing how to protect him otherwise, I had glugging an inviso potion.

Glasya091sewersfightgettingbetter_zpsd0d

A little more under control now. Spiders start to take damage, Coran made it into a passage with more space to run in, Glasya cast Emotion again, which took out one of the spiders. Imoen drank elixir of health because she got poisoned.

Not too much trouble from there.

Glasya092Schlumpsaaftermath_zps096be376.
Glasya093vial_zps8a6b288d.jpg

I've read spoilers somewhere that says that you can make a neat ring if Xzar has collected the ichor of the Cloudpeaks Dryad and you take that and a mithril ring to Halbazzer. I suspected the same is true for this fluid, but I had no reaction from Halbazzer. Maybe I need more money? I had just over 5000 gold.
I've also read that Xzar has something to do with a named prostitute (Zizi) in the Undercellars. I could not find her there. Maybe she's only there in chapter 7? I'll try both things later again, but for now, back to taking Dynaheir along. Very nice for her that Schlumpsha dropped a Robe of the Good Archmagi!

General BG questing and such
I like to take my time here. In particular lots of wealth to be had but also some easy experience.
The Ordulinian-Arkion-Nemphre thing got complicated as you may remember. Due to failed pickpocketing.
Thanks to you people, I knew that it is possible to pickpocked charmed characters so we set out to try that. I now have more respect for this spell:

Glasya094Arkion_zpsb7abf43d.jpg

Wow, a much harder save (-2 penalty) than the regular Charm Person (which has a +3 bonus) or even Dire Charm (which has an unaltered save). It also has a pretty decent casting time (4) and it doesn't care about a Minor Globe either. Very nice. Pretty cool that I got to see his memorized spells as well.

Coran was succesful right away with Arkion, but we had more trouble with Nemphre. I used all three Algernon's cloak charges. Two were succesful but Coran failed pickpocketing both times. Glasya lucked out with a Charm Person and we could solve this, finally, and obtain a second Cloak of Non-Detection.

We fought Jacil and his blink dogs at the Counting House. I had left Dynaheir outside (she has bad AC even with her new robe) and one of the dogs tried to DD to her. That must have failed, but for whatever reason, Jacil himself also went outside. After taking an arrow, Dynaheir defended herself:

Glasya095DynaheirvsJacil_zps0720bb9c.jpg

My (often succesful) habit of pickpocketing someone as they are leaving us after a conversation backfired something fierce in Tremain's house. Coran nicked something from him (which tuned out to be an extra healing potion) but my aggressive move of blocking his exit with other characters (so I'd get more pockpocket chances) turned him hostile, and he wasn't going away. Priestly buffs triggered aplenty. We went outside and he followed. I got back in, and he was still there. Not wanting to screw up my reward, I let a character quickly talk to Varci and then we dashed out. TWO pissed-off Tremains were standing there!

"Seriously, couldn't a slap on Coran's wrist have been enough? You try to kill my whole party, and we just saved your son, for crying out loud!" I did not want to kill him/them, so I decided to run. And THIS happens!

Glasya096Tremain_zpseb1d5517.jpg

Invisibility potion, and then a succesful flight (two characters were hit by Doom spells but that was it).
Btw, they are still there outside the house. I avoid that part of the map (no need to get there).

Some more screenies to show our progress otherwise:

We are well prepared for Marek:

Glasya097Marek_zps61b0b699.jpg

A changed (and very weird) entry point on the ghast floor in Ramazith's tower put Imoen stuck between ghasts. She had planned some hide-and-seek backstabbing but now she had to lay low while Branwen and Coran drank Free Action potions, went up there and gave Imoen one as well:

Glasya098ghastsinthetower_zps7824cc33.jp

The big guy himself, otoh, was severely disdvantaged by the new entry point, because it meant he could not see us coming, at least not if it was only one character. So:

Glasya099Ramazith_zps394d218c.jpg

Drelik the bardly butler put up a very good fight. Even though we used the doorway to draw some spells, he hit Branwen with Lightning Bolt and then stunned her with a Chromatic Orb sequencer:

Glasya100Drelik_zps7d11cb22.jpg

This stun last for a very long time, at least twice as long as the fight itself.

Pretty cheesy preparations for fighting High Priestess Mistmyr, and then a whopping start:
Glasya101Mistmyr_zpsf70978a9.jpg

I took back the Tome of Understanding this way. Got Branwen's WIS to 18, which gives her an extra level 4 spell.

Glasya, level 9, 44+6 HP
Branwen, level 8, 64+5 HP
Minsc, level 8, 63 HP
Dynaheir, level 7, 33 HP (rolled 1 on the d4)
Imoen, level 10, 63 HP
Coran, level 6/7, 27 HP

Dynaheir knows two level 4 spells: Stoneskin (from Davaeorn) and Spider Spawn (bought from Halbazzer after she failed to write the one from the Sundries upstairs mages). We currently have no level 5 scroll she can learn. The ones I have seen are Cone of Cold, Animate Dead, Feeblemind, Monster Summoning III (all lost in the permanently dead Edwin's spellbok), Chaos and Feeblemind (currently in Glasya's scroll case) and another Chaos for sale at the Sundries. Where is a Cloudkill scroll??!

@Aasim: There's a level 5 spell in Firewine Ruins (cloudkill) - in addition, I know there's a cloudkill scroll lower level of Durlag's Tower, that will give you a level 5 spell.

Quad multiplayer attempt 1 - (update 3)
Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

Our third session was generally pretty serene and the group have already done quite a bit in Baldur's Gate.

The session started by selling surplus equipment from the Bandit Camp before moving through the Cloakwood.  Seniyad managed to cast call lightning before being cut down, but Yuledan shrugged off the damage.  His druid colleagues in the third area were no more successful, while Centeol and her spiders were equally ineffective.  Wewa berserked to cut down the hamadryad and leave a trail of headless wyverns behind her.

At the Cloakwood Mine some fiery potions killed one of the mages, while Wewa quickly finished the other.  Drasus and Genthore also failed to do any damage - other than the odd scratch to some summoned skeletons.  Moving into the mine Hareishan was tanked by Wewa protected by a potion of absorption.  The guards managed to wound her quite badly, but the rest of the group intervened in time to save her - Iskvael in particular helping out with a horror.  Natasha was also scared to prevent her casting, while the ogre mage found his mirrors no protection against Wewa's swords.  Wewa used another potion of absorption to tackle Daveorn after Iskvael had ensured no battle horrors would generate.  The mage died very quickly, but did manage to send a lightning bolt bouncing down the corridor first - Yuledan being grateful he has good HPs.

After flooding the mine there was a fairly uneventful trip to Baldur's Gate to sell some more junk.  The first thing done was to deal with the irascible mages in Sorcerous Sundries.  Then Ratic was instructed to use a potion of firebreath on the ogre mage and his pet crawlers.  He warned the others to stay out of the way, but managed to give Wewa a good scorching in passing anyway - looks like someone always has it in for her!  Arkion and Nemphre provided some quick and easy XP before the poison quest was accepted.  While undertaking that the group also cleared Ramazith's tower, picked up the Helm of Glory, sneaked in to talk to Degrodel and battled with the Mountain Maulers.  The quest ended with Marek being another one to successfully fire off a lightning bolt just before he was chunked, but that narrowly missed Iskvael.

To get a bit more XP the team have just put the Seven Suns back under Jhasso's control and cleared some more dopplegangers from a nearby building.  They should be on their way back to Candlekeep fairly soon next time.

Stats:

Grond0 - Ratic, barbarian 7, 72 HPs, 246 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, berserker 7, 91 HPs, 174 kills, 1 death

corey_russell - Yuledan, fighter 6 / cleric 6, 69 HPs, 124 kills, 0 deaths
Gate70 - Iskvael, mage 6 / thief 7, 35 HPs, 49 kills, 0 deaths

Corthief IV the elvish thief - FINAL Update

Cothief was using Korax to help clear the basilisks. After Mutamutin was held and killed, then Corthief assisted Korax against the greater basilisk. However, apparently there was a basilisk to the south that Corthief didn't know about and Corthief was duly petrified.

Guess I better get back to Ledcan.

After clearing out the outbuildings, it was time to descend into the mines & make them mine – no pun intended initially but I’ll claim it now that I see it on parchment. All in all, they were a disappointment, a cake walk, really. Nothing stands before my power now, especially w/the mostly capable subordinates that serve me w/o question. The first level of the mines was just a matter of finding a eliminating a few Guards. Most were the typical Guards, maybe a dozen or so, in Splint Mail w/Long Swords, not BTE, so I had us cut thru w/o the little resistance & no injury to speak of. I ignored the slaves for the most part. One asked me to find a key & help him flood the mines but asked me to find a slave named Rill who could get the other slaves to freedom first. I have little interest in the welfare of those weak enough to become slaves.

After dropping off armor, swords etc., from the first level & a rest in my temporary camp that was once the barracks for the Guards here, I invaded the 2nd.  About eight more Guards & two Ghasts were first on the menu before I dove into the main course.  Must have been 25 Guards, I recall at least a half-dozen had bows of some type. They were accompanied by a female mage. Viconia had cast Animate Dead & summoned a couple of skeletons to act as a buffer & they performed well while I surveyed the battlefield & positioned my front line at the far end of a long back hall near some cell blocks, I moved Shar-teel to the other end of the hall to make sure we weren’t attacked from behind & placed Viconia, Safana & Quayle about mid-way up the hallway near a 2nd hallway that came perpendicular to the hallway were fighting in. Kagain & I were with the skeletons, knee deep in dead Guards. As I waded in I saw the mage in a cell room to the right. I immediately cast Chaos on myself, quaffed a Potion of Magic Shielding & beat her into the ground. After collecting our loot from the carcasses a couple of my subordinated tripped traps, Lightning Bolts & Magic Missiles. By the time I left level two, I had to raise Safana & either Quayle or Viconia or both, I don’t recall.

STAGED FOR BATTLE JUST IN TIME

KILLING A MAGE AND A PANT-LOAD OF GUARDS

Key Event: The only close call I had was on the 3rd level when I called in artillery on myself by mistake. Entering the third level, I was immediately faced w/Guards & Chill Hobgoblins w/those darned poison bows. I had Quayle cast Stinking Cloud in the middle of the room before changing my strategy & forgetting to tell him. The result was me, knocked out with three Chill & two Guards standing over me in the far side of the room taking shots @ my unconscious butt. I’m told Viconia cast Hold Person in their midst, Quayle Blindness on one or more of the Chill. I was unconscious, so I don’t know what happened next but I came to, bloodied, & we finished them.

c915404e9496aa573916f7ba83b07a.jpg

A CLOSE CALL BUT A WIN!

The 3rd level had a second female mage w/a few Chill as bodyguards but nothing like the wench on level two. Regardless, we tore her a new one & looted her & the Chill as well as an armory full of quite a few weapons I could get gold for & some weapons we could use and/or sell also.

KILLING A SECOND MAGE & HER ATTENDANTS

A little further down the hall was a single-Ogre Mage surrounded in rotting corpses. Had he not attacked me, I might’a had a place for him in my following – he was just one evil SOB & I LIKE that!  But he messed up, to his chagrin.

As before, I had us lug our loot out to the barracks & pack what each of us had collected to sell in the footlockers @ the end of our bunks. I have Kagain guarding the room on the bunk closest to the stairs, Quayle across from him & the women surrounding me in four beds in the back of the barracks, Shar-teel when she’s not in w/me or me w/her sleeps across from me in the back of the room, Safana in the bunk next to me & Viconia across from her. I’m trying to seduce Safana & Viconia on the sly but haven’t been successful yet, maybe they’re afraid of Shar-teel kickin’ the butts.  That could definitely happen.

I moved to the bottom level of the mines & w/Safana’s expert Trap Detection and Removal we skirted danger & encountered this guy Davaeorn who used to run the joint. I say used to b/c we stomped his butt into the floor of his chamber, Safana finishing him w/a triple-damage backstab…that chick is definitely a hottie… but I digress. Before that, Viconia had cast Animate Dead, Silence 15’ Radius & Miscast Magic. Quayle hit him w/Blindness & Kagain & I waded in to beat him senseless. I’d cast Chaos on myself before quickly casting Larloch’s Minor Drain @ Davaeorn to break up his spell casting. A beautiful thing it was seeing his lifeless shredded body crumpling to the floor. The hardest part of all of this was the repeated trips back & forth to get all the loot out of the footlockers that we’d hauled up out of the mines but I need gold.

a1292aeac5dcce9a8275083270e56c.jpg
KILLING A THIRD MAGE, DAVAEORN AND TAKING THE MINES FOR MYSELF!

Before I left I told the slave that could operate the river plug that I’d talked to ‘Rill.’ Hilarious using him to drown all his own buddies.  He was ticked but I spared him, he was just so crushed I wanted to see him live w/that misery forever.

One last thing. Suddenly, I’m sensing I might need to watch Shar-Teel.  She’s said a couple of times that, “one of these days, I’m gonna gut you like a fish.”  I thought it was her just being her but then she looked @ me the yesterday in a way that makes me wonder what’s goin’ on in the screwed up mind of hers. If she thinks she can cross me & not get crushed, she’s got another thing coming. She needs to be content that I let her travel w/me & that she’s lucky enough that I chose her as my lover. I’m ready for any traitorous skullduggery if she chooses that path. Otherwise, she has a place @ my side as long as she serves me well.

My Overlord Demoness returned that night.  It seems I have these dreams & another source of evil pulls @ me, even grants me powers, in this case a second Innate Horror Spell.  But then my hideously, beautiful Marileth follows & reminds me that I belong to her Mistress alone.  She returned my Anti-Paladin powers to me courtesy of HER mistress as they would have been to date, although in the eyes of the Faerun I will still be a ‘Fallen-Paladin.’ She says her Mistress is pleased w/my efforts & is ecstatic that I’m SO evil that I am not even welcome in Anti-Paladin circles. The Type V Overlord Demoness directed me to go to Baldur’s Gate next & that I would be contacted when I was needed again.

Treasure of Note: Plate of the Dark +1 (Me) which allowed me to pass my Full Plate off to my lover Shar-teel; Battle Axe +1 (Kagain); Wand of the Heaven’s (Viconia); Dozens of Scrolls & Potions (most of which Quayle can’t identify yet for sure but since I can clearly see what they are I can use many of them just by quaffing). NOTE: I DON’T ALLOW QUAYLE TO WRITE/MEMORIZE ANY BUT ILLUSION SPELLS – but I do let him cast others from scrolls for one time use – includes ID SCROLLS.) He carries a bunch of scrolls to use but I don’t have a scroll case so he’s loaded down most of the time.

Current Disposition: Back @ my camp in the Wood of the Sharp Teeth. I’d thought about taking over the Cloakwood Mines but getting back & forth would be a pain in the butt.

Ledcan the fighter/mage - Update 6

Not too much to report. The party weathered the many Cloakwood ambushes and the Cloakwood Mines themselves without any casualty. Drassus and pals weren't too much trouble when the party opens with 4 fireballs at once. As for the mages inside the Mine, Joshua soloed them all, properly buffed before-hand of course, otherwise the team just burned through the enemies here.

Ledcan is glad to be finally at the City of Baldur's Gate. Hopefully it will be smooth here as well.

Dynaheir surprised me in a most agreeable way today. We were approached by Garrick, a Bard who asked us to help him protect his mistress Silke against a group of thugs. We readily agreed but found out that the “thugs” were unarmed, innocent men. When we refused to attack, Silke attacked us. Dynaheir’s help surely made things easier. The first thing she did was to cast Spook on Silke so as to give us an edge in battle. The spell had Silke cower in fear. Unfortunately, while still panicked, she ran just in time from Dynaheir’s second spell: a Web. She regained her composure, instantly put up a couple of spell protections (Stoneskin, Mirror Image) and started slinging vicious Magic Missiles in both Dynaheir’s and my way. A second Web by Dynaheir did keep Silke in check. After that, my arrows and Dynaheir’s Magic Missiles were too much to handle for Silke. By her corpse I found an enchanted Staff (+1) that I’m now using. Garrick approached us and apologized for the disturbance . He will be in Beregost for a while, and is willing to travel with us should we be interested.

I’m having mixed feelings about Dynaheir. She’s a great ally against individual foes, especially powerful magic users, but at the same time she’s very vulnerable against mobs of ruffians, as her near-death experience at the bandit ambush as well as her abduction by the Gnolls illustrated. For her safety I asked her to wait for me inside the Jovial Juggler Inn while I would travel to the Friendly Arm Inn, a place where many travelers stop by, hoping I would meet Minsc there, or at least someone who has seen what Dynaheir described as a bald, tattooed, bulky Rashemaan Ranger with a hamster. (Minsc must be a sight to behold.) However when no one at the Inn was able to tell me anything useful. Maybe Dynaheir’s protector had died?

As I left the Inn I decided to make slight detour through the nearby Cloakwood before heading back to Beregost. I needed some time to meditate, and wanted to pray to Selûne in an unspoilt environment. Perhaps surrounded by the beauty and the perfection of the majestic forest I would find some answers regarding Dynaheir and regarding myself: What happens if we don’t find Minsc? Should I consider it my duty to protect Dynaheir, the powerful but frail Sorceress? Would I like it to have her around? What if she doesn’t want me to? Have I been a good person so far? Is it too easy to distance oneself from civilization and live as a recluse, as I’ve done so far, keeping no company but Silver and my animal friends?

Answers or at least the suggestion of answers to some of these questions came in the forest itself. On a bridge I met an Elven woodsman who introduced himself as Coran. He asked me to aid him in slaying a Wyvern that had killed a number of people and their cattle. A 2000 GP reward would await us at the Temple of the Morninglord in Beregost. Initially unsure as to the Elf’s intentions and the morality of slaying a Wyvern, I decided to join with him so that I could see for myself. I knew that Wyverns are mostly evil lizard-like creatures, distant relatives of dragons, that often kill and attack without need. I was quite eager to find the Wyvern’s lair and study the creatures. In the meantime I would have the opportunity to find out how it is to travel accompanied, and to get to know Coran a bit better. I feared he might be in it mostly for the gold, but he didn’t disappoint when he, like me, showed no interest in defending a nobleman named Aldeth Sashenstar, a pleasure hunter from the city of Baldur’s Gate, against a Druid who told us that this Aldeth had slain another Druid. Aldeth’s labeling of the Druids, whose lifestyle isn’t very different from Coran’s and mine, as “slavering wild men” and "uncultured barbarians" was as disrespectful as it was stupid. Aldeth attacked us but fell to our arrows.
cf271e45597211e806ce27ad04f295.png
In search of the Wyverns we ventured deeper into the Cloakwood. Coran caught me off guard when he started singing a song to me about a noble adventuring lady, and he made no effort to hide the suggestion that he was alluding to me. He seems to take pleasure in making me blush. I’ve got no idea why, and I also don’t know how to respond to his games. Sometimes friends tease each other as a way of showing affection. Imoen used to do that with me. The only thing is, Coran and I have only barely met. Still I’m enjoying his presence more than I had thought.
At one point we were attacked by a Phase Spider, a nasty creature that somehow had sensed our presence and appeared out of nowhere. We slew it, after which I asked Silver to cast Invisibility 15’ Radius on the three of us. We would continue to travel that way until we found the Wyvern lair. It meant traveling for about fifteen hours, resting eight hours while still invisible and having Silver cast Invisibility 15´Radius again. It helped us survive web traps, an ambush by Giant Spiders (that surely would have tried to hold us with their web attacks), and Selûne knows what other perils.
a6bb758c3da7a22e4399eaad8e33b3.png
There were very few people in the woods. We observed a community of Druids from afar but we decided not to reveal ourselves to them, as we had no business with them. We also saw a few guards or soldiers but didn’t find any base or camp in the vicinity. What we did find, at long last, was the Wyvern’s lair. I was the only one to enter it: a cave all bloody inside and out, with two fully grown Wyverns, three of their young, and various bodies the Wyverns must have brought there. I attacked one with my bow, fled outside and saw the Wyverns following me. Coran and Silver, both still invisible, were waiting for me on a narrow bridge. I ran past them, but the Wyverns couldn’t because my invisible companions blocked the way. It allowed me to slay the Wyverns plus a group of Tasloi that had followed me, without ever having to fear for my safety.
Spoiler

I’m afraid I offended Coran shortly after slaying the last of the monsters when I asked how he knew one of the Wyvern skulls had belonged to a female Wyvern. I was actually impressed with his knowledge, and noticed myself making an awkward attempt to salvage the moment. It surprises me that I actually seem to care about what Coran thinks of me. I shan’t show him this though, at least not too clearly.
8cd5718e9fe5f3aa865ec88909997b.png
Coran, Silver and I made our way back to Beregost where we brought Keldath Ormlyr a Wyvern’s head and received 2000 GP from him, and where I introduced Coran to Dynaheir and told her the news that we hadn’t obtained any information about Minsc. I offered her to trek back to the coast with Coran, to look for Minsc. Dynaheir insisted on coming with us. I reminded her once again of the Gnolls and the bandit ambush and explained to her that I wouldn’t forgive myself if something terrible was to happen to her. I even told her in general terms about Gorion. She was sympathetic, but she countered that with Coran we were now two warriors to keep an eye on her, and that she wasn’t a defenseless little girl. That much was irrefutable of course, and since I actually felt honored by her desire to come with me, I conceded. Could it be that the ring that Lord Foreshadow gave me really increases my appeal? Do people like me better now? Or would they have always accepted my shy, introverted, awkward little self even before I started using the ring, if only I had only opened up a bit more? I shall have an expert study the ring, Thalantyr maybe.
The three of us trekked to the North Coast (at least that’s how the area is referred to on my map). I scouted the area, befriended a few wolves and spotted a group of Ogres (including berserkers), Half-Ogres and Ogrillons. Dynaheir remained invisible while Coran and I were fighting the monsters. Our opponents were many and they were strong, but they were also slow and clumsy, easy prey for Coran’s arrows and mine. My biggest foe during the entire battle was the weather:
caf40791f11536cb1e8ab5a6725c9d.png
After battle was done, Coran kissed me on the cheek, supposedly complimenting me for my prowess as an archer, even though he’s the deadlier of the two of us. He had me blushing once more…
With Dynaheir we approached a solitary Gnome to find out if he had seen Minsc but other than his ramblings about a ring we brought him at his behest, he had little to say. A priest that was kind enough to heal me, told me he hadn’t seen anyone like Minsc either. He did warn us of his brother, an evil Wizard by the name of Davaeorn. We placed our hopes on a Nereid, though I was wary of her beguiling aura. I urged Coran – probably the easiest victim for a Nereid to walk the Sword Coast – to stay back, and as it happened even I wasn’t safe from the Sea Nymph. She wanted to kiss me, and when I refused, she turned hostile. Coran and I pelted her with arrows until she begged for mercy. She alleged that she had been enslaved and controlled by an Ogre Mage named Droth. This Droth appeared through some kind of Dimension Door to finish the job that the Nereid had failed at: slaying us. He was buffed with Shield, Stoneskin, Haste and Mirror Image, and therefore difficult for Coran and me to hurt. Dynaheir tried to Web him, but that spell didn’t affect the Ogre. It only caused him to pursue Dynaheir. I saw her run right into two hostile Dire Wolves but I appeased the animals, after which Dynaheir blinded Droth. This pretty much ended the fight. Coran and I could fire arrow after arrow until our foe fell.

After Droth fell, the Nereid walked off saying that the “game” she had been playing was no longer “fun”, suggesting she wasn’t as innocent as she had claimed before. We took an enchanted helmet from Droth, and made our way along the shore to the south.
We then met three Sirines. These creatures appear to be extremely territorial. They forced us into a very difficult fight in which I got charmed at one point and went after Coran, and both Coran and I got blinded and poisoned by the Sirine’s arrows. We suffered serious injuries before we could finally slay the creatures. It wasn’t something I had wanted to do, but it was either us or them.
f5bdbe3eda96b4add7e349e40c7414.png
We spotted many more Sirines and a few Nereids, but we made sure to remain unseen, traveling mostly under the effect of Invisibility. It was thus that we reached a cave in which Coran triggered one trap (that thankfully didn’t hit him) and disarmed a second one. There were three Flesh Golems apparently guarding some treasure. Coran slew two of them with magical arrows we had found on the three Sirines before, and I killed the third one with my staff.

The treasure consisted in a Manual of Bodily Health I read to increase my constitution, a Cloak of the Wolf that we agreed would serve Dynaheir best, as it allows her to flee when necessary. We also found a suit of Full Plate Mail +1. Coran said he could use it but he said he would feel uncomfortable in it. We might sell it somewhere and buy him a piece of Shadow Armor I saw for sale at Feldepost’s Inn.

Near a Lighthouse I bonded with three Worgs and guided them away from the shoreline to keep them safe from the dangerous Sirines. Besides Sirines and Nereids the area housed a large group of Hobgoblin Elite we would have fought if it weren’t for the treacherous sea and water creatures that would probably notice us if we did, and put up a fight. Of Minsc we found no trace, so we pushed on, further southward until we were warned by a Priestess not to come any closer. Brage, the frenzied Amnish guard captain we were told about in Nashkel, was there. Before we could decide what to do, he approached us in a menacing way, but when he stood before us he begged us for help. He seemed to be possessed by an evil spirit that had sent him on a killing spree. We traveled to Nashkel with him, to the Temple of Helm, where Nalin the priest found that the cause of Brage’s state lay in a cursed sword. Nalin gave me the sword and urged me to keep it somewhere safe. It's in my bag of holding (I wonder whether that's a safer place than the Temple of Helm).

When we left the Temple a huge warrior approached and told us in an aggressive way to hold still, so that his hamster might have a better look us. The warrior had no idea who we were, but we knew who he was: Minsc! When he saw Dynaheir his stance changed. He was relieved and thankful to see his ‘witch’ again. He joined the party, mainly because of Dynaheir. I’m less enthusiastic. Minsc’s intentions are good, and he’s no doubt an imposing warrior, but he’s also loud, unsubtle, and rash. I’m becoming more and more attached to Dynaheir though. We have interesting conversations about Rashemi culture and the differences with the Sword Coast. She’s a competent caster, and someone I feel I can trust. I really wouldn’t want to lose her. And I think that she cares for me as well. After Coran had me speechless once more with a flower bouquet he gave me, I think I overheard Dynaheir warning him not to use me to sate any desires of the flesh.a7ef4222b75b92fbb9ab37836d170c.png

Ledcan the fighter/mage - Update 7

Traveling with Joshua (level 8 dwarven berserker), Hanna (level 8 human cleric), Paja (level 9 thief)

The party has solved the chapter 5 quests/battles without much unusual occurring. Joshua soloed the 5th floor of the Iron Throne building, properly protected/enhanced by pro magic scroll and some potion buffs.

There was one thing interesting that happened though. For the first time EVER in my runs, I have successfully chosen the option "We want to die." when talking to Degrodel. Interesting enough, my last character to choose this option was Heather, my mage - she was the last arcane character of mine that actually got anywhere, not counting my bards. How did we survive? Metagaming to be sure. Joshua was super buffed (left over buffs from fighting the Iron Throne), and ONLY HE was in the room with Degrodel, which is where all the doom guards and invisible stalkers spawn. Then party dealt with enemies that left the room (invisible stalker), and then assisted with ranged attacks/wands/spells, although Joshua was holding his own quite well. The reason to do this in the first place, is for the extra experience. Only Paja isn't at her level cap, but she needs 160,000 total experience to get it. We might have to do ice island, but guess we'll see.

Regardless, Duke Eltan is about to send us to Candlekeep.

Ledcan the fighter/mage - FINAL BG 1 Update - Chapters 6, 7 and Finale

Ledcan's team did well in the Candlekeep Crypts, with the basilisks getting Paja's level 10 thief, so we were happy about that. For Prat and his goons, we buffed Joshua and then sent skeletons to assist - this went extremely well - here's where the battle was interesting:

JoshuaandskeletonsbattlePrat_zps7698d329

The team had no trouble at all in Chapter 7 - we used web and fireballs vs. Cythrandria and her pet Ogre Berserkers, then concentrated firepower on Slythe and Krysitn. For Duchal Palace, party was hasted, blessed and chanted (as were 5 skeletons assisting) - the party won very, very fast.

Ledcan put invisibility on the party and we headed for the final show down. But we didn't get any extra blue potions - that was almost a mistake. I was going to try something new this fight, so thought I wouldn't need it. Well, I was wrong. My idea was to give Joshua a huge defense to fire, then have Angelo's arrows and maybe our own exploding arrows heal him. So the party stayed hidden, while a buffed Joshua charged Sarevok on the dais - Samej immediately dispelled Joshua's buffs, and now Joshua is dying, Joshua barely managed to save himself with an invis potion.

AngelodeadbutJoshuabadlyhurt_zpsbbe0f6ca

Joshua retreted to the entrance, where the party was still hidden. Joshua then got busy gulping all the blue potions we had, and even elixars of health. Another mistake here, I was using hiding for Paja hiding, but should have used the much more reliable invis ring Paja had - and her hiding eventuallly failed! Semaj immediately casts chaos - the party is close and we are unbuffed! I pause and think carefully - Ledcan MUST survive so he takes the greenstone amulet and uses it - yes Ledcan avoids confusion, but now Paja and Hanna are wondering in a cloudkill.

However, Ledcan and Joshua don't stand idle, they immediately take down Semaj - forgot to mention Paja's last action was to dispell Semaj's buffs, which in fact worked. Tazok then showed himself, but with magic missiles and Joshua's nice damage dealing, Tazok didn't live particularly long. Incidentally, Angelo was killed earlier by Sarevok when Joshua went invisible to save himself.

Hmm, maybe we can do it? Ledcan spends the last of his monster summoning wand (2 charges), Joshua does a few buffs, not much, party equips best ammo while Hanna gets ready to summon skeleton replacements. Since Joshua can't heal, anytime he gets hit by Sarevok, Joshua withdraws a bit to let summons get hit, then Joshua comes in with his two axes. Looks like its working! Sarevok is near death in this screenie...

LedcanhasSarevokneardeath_zps16302170.pn

Yes, by range attacking and hit and run by Joshua, Sarevok DOES fall!

LedcandefeatsSarevok_zpsf812e53e.png

Chaotic final battle, but glad for the success and no loss of any party members - everyone moving on to BG 2. This is a rule of 4 party - NPCs are only allowed to join (if not doing a quest) and a party member gets chunked, and even then, only until there are 4 total party members.

Wrecking Crew IX (update 1)

For a change from solos I thought I would resurrect my attempt to progress with a crew of dwarven fighters.  I struggled with them previously in an SCS installation.  That was partly due to the time encounters with casters took while waiting for various buffs to die down and in this basic BGT installation I think they should be able to make pretty quick progress without much need for buffing.  As with my solo runs there will be no use of healing potions or antidotes, but that shouldn't be that much of a restriction in a group.

A Google search suggests I got up to 8 attempts previously, hence the no. 9 above.  All the characters will specialise in melee weapons and take 2-weapon fighting in BG2.  Tribune is the PC and uses a hammer (will probably mainly use the dwarven thrower in BG2).  The others have weapons indicated by their names: Ace = axe; Max = mace; Slane = long sword; Flange = flail; Chaste = club.

Well done Corey, Aasim. Good luck Grond0, Blackraven, Jianson, CKT & anyone I've missed out.

I found a bit of time last night to start off Hewer (Blackguard). He got to level 6 with the cursed berserking sword before Peter and Baerin were saved by a hold and avenged Kirian / Lindin. If I try it again Dushai will have to watch out.

Rolled up a Dark Moon Monk who is at level 4 but my progress is likely to be sporadic.

Congrats, Corey! Safe travels with no chunks for your team in Amn!

All the best with your Crew, Grond0! Chaste's face is strangely familiar to me - looks exactly as my beloved Rune Priest Bruna!  Take care of her!  :)

Be careful and keep good work, everyone!

I haven't come across it, no.  The gauth familiar looks like it could be pretty vicious, never mind the wild mage!

********************************************************
Our party of four traveled to Beregost, where we hoped to get some loot identified by Taerom and/or Thalantyr, and to see if we could afford the Shadow Armor for Coran. On our way we rescued a Drow priestess from a Flaming Fist mercenary, although an enraged Minsc almost killed her when the fight was already over. This is disturbing: if Minsc isn’t able to keep control of himself, he’ll end up hurting innocents.

153e907bf5ee3e82e49dde93178428.png
[I kitted Minsc as a Berserker, but gave him his unique, unpredictable rages rather than the standard Berserker rages.]

In Beregost we got a pair of Bracers AC6 identified for Dynaheir as well as the ring that Lord Foreshadow gave me: it does raise the wearer’s charisma, which makes me wonder where I’d be now without the ring. However, I’m hesitant to take it off. Much as I hate to admit it, I would be hurt if Coran didn’t find me attractive anymore. We also checked for the Shadow Armor, but we couldn’t afford it.
We decided to explore the Ulcaster Ruins to see if we’d return with enough treasure to afford the Shadow Armor. It was a decision I now regret. We clearly bit off more than we could chew. First we ran into a horde of Hobgoblins, many of them Elite archers with poisoned arrows. Coran suffered a number of hits and was seriously affected by the poison.
I’m not sure what brought it on, maybe his near-death experience, but when the Hobgoblins were slain Coran declared that he loved me. I’m still a bit skeptical, not sure if the charmer really has such deep feelings for me, or simply sees me as another girl to add to his seemingly impressive list.

64eda648c4a59e02574f07a24b6734.png

Inside the Ulcaster Ruins things went terribly wrong when Coran, just as the rest of us under the effect of Invisibility 15’ Radius and besides equipped with the Cloak of Non-Detection, got detected by a Greater Skeleton Mage that seemed to be in charge of the place.

Spoiler

There was no way for Coran to escape, as the (vampiric) Wolf of Ulcaster terrified my dear friend (or should I say boyfriend?). He found himself immediately surrounded by Dread Wolves, Ghouls and the Wolf of Ulcaster. Dynaheir tried to Web them all, so that they wouldn’t reach Coran but to no avail.

e3818b22a768755b8898121f1b6334.png
e18a735581d0117160d15ffaa70ae6.png

We had little time to sympathize with Coran’s plight, as three Ghouls appeared in front of us, animated I think by the Undead Mage. I timely hid in shadows, and Dynaheir cast Invisibility on herself, causing the Ghouls plus a number of Dread Wolves to go after Coran who at that point was on the verge of death (and would fall soon after). Minsc and Dynaheir formed an invisible wall blocking the path, but leaving an opening between them through which I could attack the Dread Wolves and Undead with my bow.

c608ba33acde50a7d938540284f951.png

I slew all of them except the Wolf of Ulcaster and the Undead Mage. With my staff I had to fight a number of Dread Wolves that attacked from behind, but more kept coming. I called six Dire Wolves I had spotted near the dungeon entrance, and asked them to hold back the ceaseless stream of Dread Wolves. Minsc begged me to give him the Cursed Berserking Sword. As a Berserker, he would be able to wield it, he held. (I had my doubts, but at the same time I imagined him slaying the Wolf of Ulcaster and the Skeleton Mage.) He waded in, joined by a few of my Dire Wolves, and he slew the Wolf indeed! Unfortunately his luck ran out when in his blind fury he kept on hitting the by then Fireshielded Skeleton Mage, injuring himself more and more. Besides, two more Vampiric Wolves had joined the undead wizard. The resistance proved too much, and much to our dismay Minsc fell as well.

ddf3c5444c2bb8600ae1d47e9231ba.png
31d0bbf25cfdb0678eaec3df13c325.png

I told Dynaheir we had two options left: leave Minsc and Coran and their equipment or try to fight our remaining foes. Dynaheir pleaded caution, but I decided to approach, hidden in shadows, and try to take the Mage down, as I had seen that his spell protections had worn off. This worked: the undead abomination fell, I triggered a trap behind its corpse and got injured, but I managed to pick up our fallen companions’ equipment as well as some loot (including a Wand of Monster Summoning with one charge), and we retreated, fleeing from the Vampiric Wolves that were still out for blood.

0f1aeb8adc4cce32b2fc97194d74ac.png

At the Temple of Lathander Dynaheir and I got our fallen comrades raised. I must say I was glad to see Minsc, who had fought bravely at the ruins, and overjoyed at the sight of Coran’s smirk and his smiling eyes. We rested for about five days in Beregost to fully recover from our injuries. (This party could really use a healer!) Since we had returned from Ulcaster with little in terms of treasure, Keldath Ormlyr was the one who benefited most from our misadventure. We decided to travel to the west, following the directions as to Bassilus’ whereabouts that Keldath had given us before. We tracked the evil priest down within a day’s time, and confronted him. At one point I had to hide behind a pillar when the he cast a Hold Person spell in my direction, and the weather was terrible; Minsc even got struck by lightning, but other than that the battle went smoothly. A well-timed Magic Missile by Dynaheir, enraged Minsc’s attacks with his two-handed sword, a pack of Wolves I had bonded with and Coran’s arrows and mine finished him off. His undead minions fell soon after that.

6aba421202687373c6486534417090.png
98d54128e1ee829ec8bd7293be0064.png

Nearby we slew three Hobgoblin bandits and then returned to Keldath for our reward. With it, and with the sale of some of treasure, we were able to buy Coran the Shadow Armor, and to have Thalantyr make the Cursed Berserking Sword better wieldable and more powerful.

Thus prepared, we decided to go and investigate the Nashkel Mines for Berrun Ghastkill. On the road Coran kept trying to get close to me. I’ve been playing along but keeping him at arm’s length. Testing his patience is the only way for me to find out his true intentions. But I must say it’s becoming increasingly difficult. It’s a wonderful experience to feel myself cared about, admired and desired and, who knows, loved.

In the Nashkel Mines we had to fight large groups of Kobolds but with Dynaheir hasting the party, and with Minsc on the frontline, and Coran and I as snipers, we had no real difficulty with the vermin. Their leader, Mulahey, was more problematic. In spite of the party focusing their efforts on the Half-Orc, he managed to command Minsc to lie down and, more upsetting, to hold me. Fortunately Dynaheir had the presence of mind to cast Invisibility on me, so that Mulahey’s many Kobolds and Skeletons wouldn’t attack me. Coran more than stood his ground, slaying Mulahey in close combat and clearing the place of many of Mulahey’s minions together with Minsc. I helped them as soon as I regained control over my body.

There was only one (very) interesting piece of loot: a pair of Boots of Speed. We released an Elven prisoner that Mulahey had kept, and escaped together to the surface where we parted ways. Coran told me he wanted to stay by my side regardless of all the dangers that I'm exposed to. I gave him a kiss, but retreated when I saw Dynaheir looking at me.

The area surrounding the mine exit was full of dangers. First we had to defend ourselves against a Wizard and two Mustard Jellies he summoned after we had shown an interest in a spell he had developed for the conjuring of such slimes. Minsc’s fighting prowess is impressive. He decimated the Mage in a way that almost made me feel sorry for the man. Meanwhile I fought the Mustard Jellies whose slowing and poisonous spits gave me a hard time. Fortunately Minsc helped me out with the mighty Sword of Rage as enchanted by Thalantyr. Dynaheir and Coran were of less consequence in this battle with their spells and mundane arrows respectively.

c301d747da4bb568e6583f589f6817.png

We also battled many undead and put them to their final rest, much to my Lady Selûne’s satisfaction I’m sure. The strongest of the Undead was a Revenant, but enraged Minsc, this time using the Rage ability of the Sword of Rage rather than his own innate rage, was even stronger:

b84aa43ad22a879a71c61a08100b5c.png

We made our way back to Nashkel where we were thanked and rewarded by Berrun Ghastkill. When we wanted to rest at the inn, we were attacked by an Assassin called Nimbul, a formidable foe that caused our party some serious trouble. Minsc raged and charged in, but to my shock his target wasn’t the Assassin but an innocent Amnish soldier who didn’t even have the time to defend himself before Minsc cut him down.

Spoiler

Meanwhile Nimbul cast a Confusion toward Dynaheir, Coran and me. We tried to enter the Nashkel store to avoid the spell’s nasty effects but were too late. Right at the door, Coran and I got affected by the spell and together we slew Dynaheir who had no place to run. (Images of her pained and frightened expression, that didn’t mean anything to me at the time I was confused, still haunt me.) Minsc then proceeded to direct his rage at the right person and didn’t take long to slay our foe, though he wasn’t fast enough to prevent the Assassin from hurting him and killing three more Amnish guards with a Skull Trap.

We had Dynaheir raised by Nalin at the Temple of Helm, and rested at the Nashkel Inn. When we left we were greeted by four bounty huntresses, two priests and two assassins: Lamalha, Zeela, Telka, and Maneira. We rushed back inside, but were followed by all four of them. Apparently these amazons had no qualms about causing a fuss in a public place. Their opening move was devastating. A backstab and an Unholy Blight outright killed Coran, and the latter spell also nearly slaughtered Dynaheir. I quaffed a Potion of Magic Blocking to protect myself against our opponents’ powerful magics, Minsc got commanded, and Dynaheir got fatally backstabbed while she was in the process of casting Horror. In a trancelike state, I wouldn’t call it a rage, I was just acting intuitively without having to consider my moves, I slew all four of our foes in close combat and, together with Minsc, their summoned Skeletons.

At the Temple of Helm I bought two scrolls of Raise Dead and spent them on both Dynaheir and Coran. After that we rested and had a very serious conversation. The whole thing of leading a group of adventurers is very novel to me. So I told Coran and Dynaheir that they were under no obligation to accompany me. I'm very, very fond of the both of them, but they ought to know that they're free to live the lives they want live, be it by my side at the moment, or elsewhere. Coran asked me if I remembered the words he'd spoken at me by the Nashkel Mine exit. It made me blush. Dynaheir too, was willing to stick by my side, though she urged me to be more generous in my consumption of anti-magic potions and items. The memory of Coran and me attacking her, was a painful one. However I didn't count with Dynaheir yet, because I still had to to tell Minsc what I should have told him right after Nimbul: that I can't condone his attacking and even slaying of innocents. It's one thing to lose control due to external magic (as had happened to Brage with the cursed sword, and to Coran and me when Nimbul magically confused us), but we have the responsibility to control our own, internally driven actions.
I didn't call Minsc evil, I believe his intentions are good, but I told him I saw no other way than for us to go different paths. I knew Coran would stick with me, but I was more concerned that it would also mean the end of my partnership with Dynaheir. I was more than surprised when she proposed Minsc to come with us to Nalin, and to find a manner to redeem himself. She had been impressed by the way in which Nalin had dealt with Brage. Minsc was very sad, I could hardly keep myself from crying at the sight of the broken giant, but he agreed to Dynaheir's proposal. Nalin said that Minsc could work for him or even serve the Nashkel military to atone for his actions. The soldier he had slain had been a new face, so the other soldiers were unlikely to be vengeful, though they would be suspicious of him. Either way, Nalin was an authoritative and well-liked figure in Nashkel. He would speak in Minsc's favor. Besides, the military could use a strong warrior, what with their four recent casualties (Minsc's victim plus the thee soldiers that had fallen to Nimbul's Skull Trap).

Without Minsc our party has no true frontliner, though Coran told me he was prepared to take up that role with the Ankheg armor and the Sword of Rage. I doubt he would be as good at it as Minsc, but it's something to consider. If Selûne wants me to have another fighter by my side, she'll send me one. I also think we would be helped with a healer in our party, but that too, is something for Selûne to decide. Meanwhile I'll travel with Coran and Dynaheir to Beregost, because according to a letter I found o Nimbul's corpse, there's contact of his waiting for him at Feldepost's Inn. I think this is something we ought to investigate.
