Congrats Quad Multiplayers :)

Jianson, in that case I have no explanation for the XP difference.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some good news for a change: I’ve dismantled the Iron Throne, revealed Sarevok’s agenda (thus salvaged my tarnished reputation in Baldur’s Gate) and I’ve slain my nemesis and his lackeys.

In Candlekeep I found a letter from Gorion in which he explained my heritage: Bhaal, the Lord of Murder was my father. This might explain my special abilities to lay on hands, slow poison, and my divine wrath, powers that have come to me in dreams. It also explains why the Moonmaiden never took these powers from me: they didn’t come from her in the first place.

Spoiler

The thought of being Bhaal’s daughter is upsetting, but I must say that I’ve never felt and still don’t feel any connection apart from the above-mentioned abilities I never even asked for. The question is whether Bhaal’s essence exerts some kind of subtle influence that I’m not even aware of. Was it his essence, his blood running through my veins, that had me take the fight with Nemphre outside and confused but good-natured Alora to kill innocents? I don’t know, but I do know that it makes little sense to dwell on this all the time. The past doesn’t matter, what I need to do is to stay in the moment, in the present, conscious of my actions.
In the Candlekeep library we met and confronted the Iron Throne leaders (except Sarevok). I had expected them to be older merchant-types but they turned out to be capable adventurers not unlike my party. We prevailed without too much difficulty though. Alora played an important part again. With a single backstab she slew their Thief, and she stunned and poisoned Rieltar, a Mage, who was subsequently finished off by Khalid. The other Iron Throne leaders, were taken care of by the party in a joint effort. Interestingly, we were arrested by a Candlekeep watcher after some of his own colleagues had helped us against Rieltar.4a9531771a2649ab4d026a11d8de7f.png

Tethoril visited us in our cell and was so kind to help us escape via the catacombs beneath Candlekeep, a deed I shan’t forget. Down there we got into a bloody fight with a band of mercenaries who had been waiting for Sarevok. Apparently Sarevok knew Candlekeep well… We were invisible but when we after we killed a Phase Spider us in a quiet space, one of the mercenaries, a Mage, came Dimension Dooring in. We slew him and two of his comrades with relative ease.

At that point, the worst had yet to come: a wizard-******-timebomb named Sakul. He brought back memories of Natasha in the Cloakwood Mines. Protected by a Minor Globe of Invulnerability he used Teleport Field and Web to limit our room to manoeuver, and he hurt me with a Lightning Bolt and my party with two Sunfires. Khalid and Faldorn didn’t survive the onslaught and the rest of us just barely (by quaffing healing potions). Alora, Jaheira and I had to fight our way through his Stoneskins and Mirror Images before we could finish him off.

Spoiler

Back in Baldur’s Gate we raised our fallen comrades, were informed of the latest news by a mysterious woman named Tamoko, saved Duke Eltan from a pseudo-healer that was in fact a Greater Doppelganger, and dealt with Sarevok’s lover Cythandria on the top floor in the Iron Throne building. She was a dangerous wizard with two massive golems by her side, but we had to take her on because she was holding incriminating evidence against Sarevok. Alora lured the golems downstairs, while Faldorn dispelled the wizard’s magical protections, allowing us to take her down with little difficulty. The brainless Golems were tricked by Invisible party members blocking the doorways, while so that I could pelt them without trouble.

965f5b9f35dd84b7e6f6724cd1bcd3.png

On Cythandria we found letters mentioning two killers hired by Sarevok to take down the Dukes of Baldur’s Gate for him. They were supposed to be in the Undercellars below The Blushing Mermaid, and that’s where we found them: Slythe, a rogue and his girl Krystin, a wizard. We first took on Krystin. That went probably better than it could have, since Khalid managed to Horror her twice with his Sword of Rage. That being said, she did cause the party quite a lot of trouble. She successfully cast Chaos on a couple of my party members. When Faldorn started attacking a courtesan [Zizi the Lovebundle, no idea who she is], Dynaheir cast Invisibility (15’ Radius) on the harlot, in order to prevent any further reputation losses. Meanwhile Khalid got fried by Krystin’s Lightning Bolt, but then Alora stunned Krysting with a Dart of Stunning, after which Jaheira and I took finished her off with ranged attacks.
[Confused Faldorn killed the bouncer by the way, but fortunately did so at no reputation loss.]

Slythe was easier to deal with. Dynaheir was Stoneskinned and Faldorn Ironskinned, they would take turns engaging the rogue in melee, while Jaheira, Alora and I would attack with our ranged weapons. This worked fine.

7a7702e2d9e2d3627676bbf2e46024.png

We found an invitation to the intended coronation of Sarevok as the new Duke of Baldur’s Gate at the Ducal Palace. When we arrived we saw the “public” turn into Shapeshifters and attack Duke Belt and Duchess Liia Janneth. The Shapeshifters would cast Horror all the time. I quaffed a potion of Magic Shielding and Khalid wanted to activate his sword’s Rage ability, but was (once again) too late. I was the only one fighting six Shapeshifters and desperately trying to protect the Dukes. I couldn’t save the Duchess and would have probably failed at protecting Duke Belt as well if it weren’t for Faldorn’s Insect Plague.

0fe2f4a356ec6985db72cada38ecb0.png

We presented the evidence against Sarevok to Duke Belt, after which the former was teleported away by a wizard. Belt divined their whereabouts and sent us their way. We had to find our way through a trapped maze, guarded by undead, to reach the Undercity and Sarevok’s Sanctum.
Before entering though, we had to deal with a group of Iron Throne hirelings from another region. They were on the same mission as us, stopping Sarevok, but found it necessary to attack us anyway. Their wizard was stunned by one of Alora’s darts, and their Priest was repeatedly interrupted by my arrows and taken down together with their fighters by Alora, Jaheira and Khalid. When the stun effect on the Mage wore off she triggered a lot of protections and managed to kill Dynaheir with a Lightning Bolt before Faldorn could dispel her protections allowing the rest of us to finish her off.

Alora scouted ahead and ran into Tamoko in front of the entrance to Sarevok’s sanctum. She told Alora she would not let us pass, and he triggered a Blade Barrier and a number of other clerical buffs and protections. Alora ran away and hid until Tamoko’s protections had worn off. With overwhelming physical force we downed our foe.

cc7c6993a8b7a06070fc488a1ab4d2.png

We then entered Sarevok’s temple. My companions all quaffed potions of invisibility, and I cast a green scroll of Protection from Magic on myself. Sarevok had four guards we had to slay first before Sarevok could be touched: Diarmid (an archer), Angelo, Semaj (both wizards), and resurrected Tazok. I took them on in that order: Diarmid and Semaj mostly with ranged attacks, and Angelo and Tazok in melee. There was little risk involved. Two or three times Sarevok noticed me and came after me, but I countered by quaffing invisibility potions and going after the lackeys first.

Sarevok himself was more difficult to deal with because he was hasted. My companions would formed an invisible wall to facilitate my ranged attacking. When he was near death, I quaffed another invisibility potion and we all surrounded Sarevok, we attacked at the same time. It was Alora’s backstab that did him in.

We reported our victory to Belt and are now on our way to Amn. We might stop in Nashkel to see how Minsc has been doing…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally another successful no-reload through BG1.
Call me a stick-in-the-mud but I’m not overly pleased (which may be notable from the perfunctory journaling this time). Of my current and former party members only Alora, who joined at a very late stage, and Serene haven’t died. Coran has died six times, Khalid four at least, Faldorn once or twice, Dynaheir five or six times, and Minsc twice iirc. That’s about 20 Raise Deads. I've kind of lost track. At one point NPC deaths completely stopped making an impact. I feel like I've played a regular reload game. Having five “meat shields” that I can raise whenever I want takes away a lot of the fun/challenge I notice.
I still have to decide whether or not to continue, and if so whether to do it right away, or to do a “test run” (allowing reloads) through BG2 with another character because it’s been quite a long time since I’ve played it. What I do know is that in subsequent playthroughs I’ll go back to soloing or I’ll apply a resurrection limit of 1 or 2 per party member.

At the moment I'm inclined to let Serene rest for a while and do a metagamed speedrun with a Fighter/Thief or see how my Halfling Barbarian/Druid works.

I followed my curiosity & approached that fraud Kelddath Ormlyr to find out about this ‘mad Bassilus’ he’s blabbin’ about every time we go into that freakin’ place.  He said we’d need to bring back this Bassilus’ Holy Symbol to receive the reward.  Sounded simple enough.

Key Event: I fell upon Bassilus within only an hour or so in the Red Canyon’s.  We arrived & ran into two wolves before I began to lead my subordinates in a clockwise reconnaissance around the canyons in search of this mad cleric. Almost immediately a little brat came up saying he’s just been spying on Bassilus.  I had Safana recon ahead Hidden in Shadow. She returned to inform me that she saw what appeared to be Bassilus surrounded by a dozen or so Skeleton’s w/Heavy Crossbows & Two-Handed Swords & a couple of Zombies too. I decided to have Viconia Bless us all w/the power of her Goddess while Quayle pulled out a Web scroll & cast it, from range, in to the area where they were centered. At the same time, Shar-teel moved up & tossed an Oil of Fiery Burning in the same location. The Oil of Fiery Burning destroyed every last one of the undead so all I had to deal w/was the Cleric. I don’t know if he ever got to use a spell, it happened so fast. My power, augmented by my subordinates is unmatched & the Cleric was quickly dead. I think Viconia cast Command & then Shar-Teel & I attacked through Quayle’s Web spell, I w/Spider’s Bane & she w/her Ring of Free Action.  We never got to him & I’m not sure if a Chromatic orb cast by Quayle, also from a scroll didn’t finish him but I also know that Kagain got to use his Throwing Axe +2 for the first time so that might’a done the trick too. We snatched up the 10 or 12 Heavy Crossbows, the Two-Handed swords, Bassilus’ Holy Symbol of Cyric & a Warhammer +2/+1 Electricity back to Ormlyr for ID & to cash in on my gold.

ONE DEAD CLERIC OF THE WEAKLING GOD, CYRUS, FOR MY QUEEN, MALCANTHET

Then I led us back to clear the canyons.  All total, in addition to Bassilus & crew, the canyons gave me opportunity to hack up three Ghouls & two Ghasts as sacrifices for my Queen. I also led in the killing of two more Wolves, two Dire Wolves, a Hobgoblin who called himself the strongest (which immediately ticked Shar-Teel off) & his two other Hobgoblins, three Hobgoblin Elites & I seem to recall a half-dozen, maybe eight skeleton’s in there for good measure. After that, it was back to Beregost to sell loot & lighten our load again.

DESTROYING GHOULS FOR MY QUEEN

As I was walking back, it occurred to me that my Queen, Malcanthet, had just used me to eliminate the cleric of a rival deity, Cyric.  Even when she doesn’t appear to me, she uses me to accomplish her ends here on the Prime material Plane.

Treasure of Note: 5000gp for Bassilus’ Holy Symbol.  Warhammer +2 (Kagain). Kagain is not trained w/a Warhammer but of course, aside from Battle Axes Dwarves prefer Warhammers. W/the extra enchantment on this weapon, Kagain will use it as his main weapon & his Battle Axe +1 in his off-hand. Next time he gets a chance he’ll add Warhammer proficiency.

Current Disposition: Restin’ @ the red Sheaf after dumpin’ loot from the Red Canyons

Next Steps: I've still had no new visitations from my Queen & I’m curious about the woods around the High Hedge Manor, so unless something changes, I’m gonna mosey on over there tomorrow

I use ShadowKeeper to lower the CON one point each time an NPC has died and gotten raised.
(This is how the game works in vanilla BG1, btw.)
If that NPC had a HP bonus from their CON, that means a significant disadvantage from here on. And once you get below 7, you get penalty to the HP. And if it gets really low (2, I think) it is no longer possible to raise them. That happened with Xzar in one of my earlier playthroughs.

For me, this makes most NPC deaths feel like losses, and I makes me really try to keep them alive.

The party made a short trip to Durlag’s Tower, to look for a Tome. The Item Randomisation mod randomizes the Tome (so it could be a STR Tome that was waiting for me there instead of the vanilla WIS Tome) but also the location of the Tome in the Tower.

Iirc, it doesn't change the location - when I used Randomizer a Tome is always in the chest, but it can be either one of them.

Maybe one can find another randomized Tome within Durlag's Tower, but one should always be in the trapped chest.

Congrats anyway  -  I do understand your issues with Raising Dead...perhaps a permanent -1 CON could be a nice way to handle it. Regardless, I've witnessed people get chunked quite often so it's still risky.

@Grond0, @Jianson, @Aasim, @Serg, thanks for your congrats :)
Lowering CON is a good suggestion, either that or capped NPC resurrections would have been a good option.
Aaasim, I think there's an option to also randomize the Tome's location within Durlag's Tower (though I didn't find anything in my weidu-log). In its usual place I found a sling (Arla's Dragonbane) but nothing else.

I've decided to combine two runs, one continuing with Serene, and a new BG1 run with a Barbarian/Druid (shadowkeepered multiclass).

Glasya, half-elven Sorceress with random spell picks, adventuring in chapters 5-7 with Branwen, Minsc, Imoen, Dynaheir and Coran

We finished up most of the quests in BG. After finishing Nadarin's basilisk quest, Coran nicked his Boots of Stealth, so now we have two pairs. Nice.

Since I did not want to risk losing Helm of Balduran, I decided to drop it in a container and go and kill Degrodel instead of finishing his quest. After most of his spells were depleted, Glasya tried out a spell she has not yet used. Must try everything at least once, eh?

Glasya102Degrodel_zps69a4d52c.jpg

Degrodel dropped a level 5 scroll, but again, it was from the Enchantment school: Hold Monster.

I decided to finally take on the bandit camp. I prepared three Skull Traps just outside the main tent entrance, and used Stinking Cloud + skeletons for most of the outside fight. (yeah, and several buffs: Chant, PfE 10' and Haste) For some reason, the guys insisde the tent did not join the fight, and after I had won the outside fight, the cursor did not morph to the 'go inside' symbol when I moved it around the tend entrance (a bandit archer had stumbled into the skull traps when he tried to gain distance in the fight). I thought maybe it was too late to enter that area in chapter 5, so I went south instead and killed the two ogre magi Shilo Chen had talked about.

I checked the tent again and now the cursor behaved as normal. I rested in the gnoll cave, buffed and entered. First thing that happened was that Coran poisoned Venkt with a bolt and that disupted his first spell attempt:

Glasya103bandittent_zpsf73b5743.jpg

The next round, there was only one enemy that wasn't scared, sleeping or held:

Glasya104tentdefeated_zps1f3575e4.jpg

Oh, and that must have been a maximum roll for Imoen's backstab:
Weapon damage 1d8+1 (9 max) + Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise (+2) + enemy not equipped with melee weapon (+4) = 15.

Minsc (boosted with Magic Shielding potion and oil of speed) sneaked into the back rooms of the Iron Throne top floor. He used up most of our detonation arrows. That did not quite cause the carnage I had hoped/expected, but at least both clerics died.

(There is definitely something wrong with my SCS install when it comes to this battle. The two added thieves are not there. Third time now. It is weird, because I used the same SCS version the time it worked, about two years ago)

A summoning storm drew out most spells from the mages (battle was fought one floor down) and we could kill them with ease. Imoen took down the two fighters and the doppelganger with backstabs.

We plundered their basement as well. Found a passage to the sewers here. As I added a map note that this passage leads to the IT basement, I noticed my characters were taking damage. Glasya was down to half life! Geez, I thought the game was paused when you added map notes!

Darn, those spiders again:

Glasya105damnspiders_zps67025eab.jpg

Glasya took an elixir of health and cast Emotion the next round. That spider did not let her be, though, and she was poisoned again. Spider fell unconscious shortly afterwards, and I spent a few nervous seconds waiting for Glasya to be able to drink the next elixir. This is after the +10 life has been added!:

Glasya106damnspiders2_zps45c02ef7.jpg

Neither Dynaheir nor Branwen were standing next to her, so I am not sure if they would have been able to cure her in time otherwise. This was a close call...

Dynaheir made all of us invisible (three spells, rest, two more, then another (on herself) after she spoke to Eltan to get us to Candlekeep. The ogre magi saw her, of course, and they managed to dispel our invisibility. Dynaheir drank an inviso potion and Coran used a magic protection scroll and decided to tank them:

Glasya107ogremagi_zpsc79f71ca.jpg

This worked quite well - he mixed in some illusion detection to get rid of pesky Mirror Images. He has very good AC when he wears full plate. He needed only one extra healing potion. He got back to where we entered the map and tried to expose the fifth mage. It did not want to show up, so Dynaheir lured it out with a summoned spider.

Candlekeep library was robbed, Rieltar's gang was killed along with the Shistal doppelganger. I used Coran for the latter, equipped with helmet of charm protection and with Remove Fear running. So he only needed to avoid getting hit, which he did not manage to. He got hit twice, but he saved once against the confusion hit, and the borrowed Cloak of Balduran's MR stopped the other hit from affecting him.

We found a Manual of Gainful Exercise on Rieltar's body. I did not screw up this time, and gave it to Minsc.

In the catacombs, this conversation came up:
Glasya108trapsdiscussioon_zpsc9b16694.jp

In the cavern, several phase spiders attacked. This time Glasya was better prepared (Ghost Armor) so they were no problems. Imoen (made invisible by Dynaheir) cleared the web traps, then the spiders and basilisks:

Glasya109fatbasiliskbackstab_zpsc7534663

There was discussion earlier in the thread about how long a mirrored eyes potion lasts, and that it's sometimes not long enough to kill these two basilisks. Did that player not know about the (very convenient) green protection scroll on the Candlekeep top floor? Or did he not have the means to open that container, or the character too low INT to use it?

Imoen bombed the area with Prat's party with two necklace of missiles shots. They started moving close to the rest of my party by the entrance, so Branwen brought up skeletons. Sakul saw us first. Dynaheir tried to disrupt him with a wand of frost shot, but that did not work, and she suffered a big hit. Almost like there was some sort of spell turning going on. Strange. She ate an MMM as well, before Sakul was 'squirelled' by Coran's bolts. Ha!

Glasya110Sakulsquirrelled_zps1f1a620e.jp

The first elemental died quickly but the second damaged three of my companions with its whirlwind. After this failed save, I knew we had won:

Glasya111Pratisout_zpscb81a313.jpg

Only the two grunts (Bor and Tam) left now, they can't do much.

Xzar interlude #2
Not even 50k gold was enough for Halbazzer to say anything about making a cool ring. No, the solution to the Shlumpsha riddle was to be found in the Undercellars. I'll hide it for those of you who don't want to know.
Spoiler

We are now back at Durlag's Tower. Branwen has just levelled up to 9. Chaotic Commands should make it easier to battle the greater doppelgangers and later the four warders.

I found a level 5 scroll that Dynaheir can write!
Shadow Door...(sigh!)

Glasya, level 9, 44+6 HP
Branwen, level 9, 71+5 HP (rolled 5 on the d8)
Minsc, level 8, 63 HP
Dynaheir, level 8, 37 HP (rolled 2 on the d4)
Imoen, level 11, 65 HP
Coran, level 6/7, 27 HP

I didn't know  that, I know that there's a Randomizer option to "replace the tome with one of 6 possible". Be that as it may, GL in your next endeavor.

I use the Randomizer to mix everything up so I have no idea where anything is located - except those items that are in a specific location for a game-related reason.  The mod asks you if you want to leave those items where they are.

As it relates to the Tomes & Manuals, the exact wording in the read me is:

Randomly replace the WIS tome normally found in TotSC with one of the 6 available types

TotSC only
If this component is installed, it will make the main component randomly change the Tome of Understanding normally found in Durlag's Tower into any one of the 6 types of Tomes found in the game. This means you have an equal chance of finding e.g. a second STR or INT Tome as you do of finding a third WIS Tome. For Mode 1, the type of Tome is determined when you first enter the area where you will find the Tome in your current game. For Mode 2, the type of Tome is determined when the main component is installed.

Having had no specific dreams to drive me elsewhere, I elected to explore the woods around High Hedge Manor after I’d finished disposing of the loot from my second foray into the Red Canyons. It seems my Queen always leads me to where I need to be whether she appears to me or not.  There would be nothing remarkable about High Hedge Manor & the surrounding woods except that they were flush with bands of followers of Yeenoghu &, by extension, Doresain.  The woods contained more than their share of undead & I’d say I killed almost a score of Skeletons in addition to a pack or War Dogs.

I had the supreme pleasure of destroying about a dozen Gnolls, a few of them Veteran’s, & a small pack of three Ghouls.

GNOLL'S, GHOULS, GHASTS, IN THAT ORDER, AS SOON AS I SEE THEM, I'M @ A RUN TO ENGAGE & DESTROY FOR MY QUEEN MALCANTHET!

Key Event: None really to speak of.  I had an encounter w/four Gnolls.  Usually Gnolls only carry Halberds so when I saw one that had a Short Sword too, it reminded me of a story I’d heard, seeing as a Short Sword is only big enough to get the toe-jam out of a Gnoll.  Seems a little runt of a Gnome in the Red Sheaf, where I usually stay when in Beregost, is always going on about how some dog-headed creatures had stolen his short-sword. I asked Shar-Teel to set the sword aside & we’d take it to the little runt next time we were there. Sure enough, I got 50 gold out of it from him - as opposed to the standard 2 gold.

I sensed nothing to dissuade me from following my inclination to head to the Shipwreck’s Coast after my foray into the woods around High Hedge Manor.  With her awesome power, it may be that my Queen places these thoughts into my consciousness & leads me w/o having to ‘visit’ me every time she wants me to do something.  Certainly High Hedge Manor allowed me to destroy minions of both Yeenoghu & his vassal Doresain so it stands to reason that she would lead me there.  I found that to be the same when I invaded the Shipwreck’s Coast.

After a battle w/a pack of three Ghouls &, before that, two Wolves, I had an encounter w/a Nereid which slowed things a bit.  I’m walking along & suddenly this totally nude Nereid comes up to Safana who, in general, is my spokesman. The Nereid asked for help which I wasn’t interested in providing but then she insists on kissing Safana. My curiosity in seeing what that led to was quickly erased when Safana fell dead. Immediately, Viconia dropped the Nereid w/a Command & Shar-Teel was on her w/her Long swords in a second. The Nereid recovered & begged for mercy but my subordinates were pissed & weren’t hearing it. They killed her & we returned to the fraud @ the Temple of the Morning & utilized his services to return Safana to us.  (NOTE TO SELF: WAKE UP IRONSIDE! Viconia has three Raise Dead Scrolls – don’t spend 800 GPs to get someone raised again until all three have been used!!)

PACK OF GHOUL'S

PACK OF GHOUL'S W/PET WOLVE'S

When I returned to the Shipwreck’s Coast, I stumbled on another pack of three Ghouls with two pet Wolves, which I crushed easily.  After that I fought about six Carrion Crawlers, in two separate battles & recovered a ring for some goofy Gnome.  I checked the ring out before I returned it to him but it was cursed. He gave me an Oil of Fiery Burning for my trouble.

Key Event: Suddenly I stumble on a convention of big oaf’s right there on the shore. I think there were three Ogres, three or four Half-Ogres & a bunch of Ogrillons.  As usual, Shar-Teel & Kagain were dual-wielding on the big, goofy morons in an instant. Viconia cast Spiritual Hammer @ one point, not sure if she was slinging stones or what before that. Safana laid back & fired darts @ ‘em one @ a time while Quayle kicked into another gear for once. He started by using a Scroll of Lightning Bolt & killed one of ‘em instantly. Then he pulled out a Scroll of Agannazar’s Scorcher & used it, trying to be careful.  That’s another one like Lightning Bolt that you have to be careful w/.  Just as the Lightning Bolt he cast bounced back & came close to injuring or killing multiple party members (luckily they all avoided the bounce back) so Agannazar’s Scorcher burned both Shar-Teel & Kagain who were already beaten & bruised pretty good from the fight. We ended up beating & killing the ‘loafs of oaf’s’ & were fortunate that some healing philanthropist was standing by & offered to heal both Shar-Teel & Kagain. We let him do his thing, checked out a couple of other places we hadn’t checked out yet & we were headed back to Beregost to cash in our loot before going back to my camp in the Wood of Sharp Teeth to get some of our equipment that we needed & to let Quayle sort thru his scrolls.

OGRE'S, HALF-OGRE'S & OGRILLONS @ AN OAF & IDIOT CONVENTION ON THE SWORD COAST

Three things.  First, I’ve got this thing down to where I can lay back in the majority of battles & let Shar-Teel & Kagain do the heavy lifting up front while Viconia & Quayle use spells before switching to ranged weapons. Safana is getting really good @ immediately flanking the fight Hidden in Shadow & then back-stabbing enemies ruthlessly.  I just sit back & let ‘em do their thing, casting a well-placed spell here & there & then moving in once the outcome is already settled.  Then I’m standing there knee deep in dead & bloodied enemies w/o having actually subjected myself to danger. Of course, if a battle does get tough, the enemy seems to get complacent thinking they’re getting the upper hand having no idea that they’re expending all they have against my subordinates & having no knowledge that the most powerful of all, Ironside, is standing back waiting to pummel them as soon as they start to relax, thinking they’ve won.  Ha-ha. I know my Queen is proud b/c I know she is the one that is teaching me.

Second, I need to assassinate that witch Officer Vai of the FF. She keeps hassling me every time I come to Beregost even though I’ve done nothing to her. I’ve had my subordinate’s use Command & Hold Person spells to keep her off us & I’ve kept us from killing her b/c I know we’ll be blamed for her hostility. I think I’m gonna let Safana knock her off next time while @ the same time visiting the fraud priest to level things out a bit.

Third, I really need to find one, or better yet two, enchanted Long Swords for Shar-Teel.  She keeps breaking the regular swords, but worse, if I encounter a creature that can only be hit by enchanted weapons, Vampiric Wolves come to mind, she’ll be wading in there, endangering my best fighter w/o any hope of causing any damage to the enemy.

(Fourth, I need a Tome of Clear Thought for Safana.  I want to redirect her into a dual-classed Mage/Thief. Then I can fire the ‘one track’ Illusionist, Quayle & then sneak back into Baldur’s Gate & hire Skie for the Rogue duties)!

Treasure of Note: None to note. Most expensive, Fire Opal Ring

@Jianson, wow loved Imoen's backstab! Backstab crits are always a delight :) Also nicely done against the Ogre Magi, I usually flee (too risky, too much magic).
I think you did well in thoroughly exploring the wilderness areas before doing the main quests.
@CKT, very good. And awesome details as always. For example the party (without armor!) conferring around the table in the Bandit Tent. Love it!

So, I'm reading the Baldur's Gate novel.  You know, thinking ahead for ideas for a PC?

If you haven't already, don't look in the novel for any help...you won't find any.

Ugh. Really bad! CKT

Starting a new run with paladins. Four to start with who will pick up Ajantis(inquisitor) and Isra(Cavalier) as the game progresses. If we reach Amn, we will probably pick up Keldhorn and Saerileth, though Isra and Ajantis are possibilities there too. Don't know why this is in B & W. I'll investigate.

As well as my normal installation I gave Shank and Carbos +1 weapons and "The rod of terror" to Tarnesh. I tried a single paladin against Shank and Carbos, and it made them fairly tough, though against four, it was no contest. Tarnesh didn't get a chance to use his staff.

Upon escaping the ambush we made our way to the Frriendly Arms Inn as Gorion suggested. There we were ambushed by a mage called Tarnesh. Outnumbering him four to one, it wasn't really a fair fight, but hey! It wasn't us that started it. We then took Joia's ring back to her.

We killed the fishermen but upon being unable to enter Baldur's Gate where we were hoping to hide, we headed south where we were able to help Melicamp.

We managed to get Marl to come to terms with his son's death and killed some spiders before heading southwards where we killed some orgrillon and three members of the Flaming Fist. They provided three of us with plate armour, but little experience.

We helped Prism and as a result Isra joined us. We are all now at level 2.

@Wise: Best of luck to your new crew. I really enjoyed my all paladin parties, I suspect you will too. The paladins should be power-houses in BG 1. They are OK in BG 2 and become powerhouses in Throne of Bhaal as well. I tried all paladin runs 4 different times, one even made it to Melissan. I didn't get a Trilogy success until the 5th run where I took 5 paladins and a cleric/thief, however. That protagonist paladin was a Fallen Paladin at the end.

Hi folks! The following is a description of a solo no-reload attempt with an Undead Hunter. I felt like playing a badass warrior, and went for something new - had never played a Paladin before. There's not much to tell about him personalitywise, other than that I view him as less self-righteous than the average Paladin. Less Keldorn/Anomen and more Valygar. I'd even considered rolling a Justifier or Stalker Ranger. So here’s Vallon:

33880f886ce6bb0db86adb859df617.png

This thread is strictly about strategic challenges Vallon faces in this (SCS) game. I do roleplay his alignment (Lawful Good), so no stealing evil actions for better rewards. However, Imoen has been recruited and will be recruited again for larcenous purposes :)
Yesterday was a national holiday here, so I made quite a lot of progress.

***
In Candlekeep, Vallon bought a 2h sword and a helmet and went straight for Obe and the potion of Speed he could get from Deder. If you quaff the potion and tell Obe immediately afterward that you’ve seen enough fighting, you don’t even have to fight his Gibberlings. Hasted, all quests but Reevor’s rats were done.
Imoen gave Vallon her potions and her Wand of Magic Missiles, from Monty he got a suit of studded leather and two potions, and from Xzar he received two spells he would later sell. Vallon then continued alone, south to the High Hedge area where he dispatched a few Skeletons with little difficulty. He kept one skull. Further south he finished off a wolf, saving Melicamp the chicken. Thalantyr was able to restore Melicamp to his human form, which earned Vallon his first level up. He sold Imoen’s wand plus some other loot, and visited Beregost. There, the Marl, Firebead, and Ogrillons/Mirianne quests had Vallon reach level 3. Further south three Flaming Fist Officers who accused Vallon of banditry found their untimely deaths at his hands. Vallon donned the plate mail armor of one of them and kept two more suits he would later sell. After that, Karlat was downed as well, but not after various healing potions were consumed. That Dwarf is a sturdy little bugger.
He then traveled west to deal with Bjornin’s Half-Ogres. It was nice to see that Vallon was already able to hold his ground against those monsters, although he had to finish off the last two with his crossbow after suffering a few hits.

Spoiler

On the South Coast Vallon found Brage and traveled with him to Nalin in Nashkel. Vallon got to keep Brage’s Cursed Berserking sword, which would be enchanted for controlled use by Thalantyr. But first Neira was dealt with at the Nashkel Inn. Vallon knew that she wouldn’t be able to Hold him, so he was quite confident. She did cast Unholy Blight twice, but Vallon would simply step outside to prevent himself from harm.

Spoiler

At the Nashkel Carnival Vallon bought a green scroll of Protection from Petrification, and at Thalantyr’s he had got the “upgrade” to the Cursed Berserking sword. The new ‘Sword of Rage’ is a 2H sword +3 with a daily enrage ability. Vallon’s next destination was Mutamin’s garden, where he slew the Basilisks in melee, and protected himself against Mutamin’s spells by activating his sword’s enrage ability. Mutamin was hasted and therefore difficult to hit, but a critical did him in.

Spoiler

When he was done, Vallon was close to level 6. Kirian & co, were left alone for the time being. Instead Vallon traveled to the Temple of Lathander area, where he slew a number of different types of Wolves, including Vampiric Wolves, to reach level 6. After it, Vallon considered the time ripe to go Ankheg hunting. He cleared the cave without difficulty, found a Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy in it, brought Brun his son’s body, and gave the farmer 100 GP. Outside, Vallon’s run almost ended when he was up against two Ankhegs. He had just quaffed a healing potion when both Ankhegs started hitting himwith their acid spit. Having just drank the healing potion, he had to wait before he could drink his next potion, one of invisibility. He barely made it in time, at 4 HP. He rested elsewhere, found the two Ankhegs again, and slew them.

Spoiler

Vallon kept one of the Ankheg shells and got a suit of Ankheg scale armor produced by Taerom Fuiruim. In the tenday he had to wait for it, Vallon slew Greywolf in the Nashkel Mines area, and did the quests in the two Cloudpeaks areas, including taking on Vax and Zal, Sendai & co (one of them dropped the Boots of Grounding), and Caldo and Krumm. He also returned to the South Coast, where he helped Nib and faced the Doomsayer. The latter was a formidable foe who had Vallon quaff all his healing potions, circa 10, before he would fall.

Spoiler

When he got his Ankheg Armor Vallon decided to test Bassilus’ mettle. With his sword’s enrage ability activated, which protected him from a Mental Domination, Vallon had no difficulty with the the priest. (I overwrote the screenshot.) Vallon also took care of Zargal and his two buddies. Funnily Zardal’s sword shattered, but that wouldn’t keep the brave Hobgoblin from attacking:

Spoiler

On the North Coast both Droth and Shoal were felled. Droth is a dangerous foe who can cast Chaos among other spells, but with Vallon’s sword’s rage, Droth became much more manageable. The North Coast’s many Ogres and their ilk, weren’t a real threat anymore at this stage of Vallon’s growth as a warrior.

Spoiler

He had a much harder time in the Light House area though, where the six “enhanced” Sirines (inclusing Sil), and two Hamadryads and their Water Weirds were difficult for him to overcome, even with a green scroll of Protection from Magic to protect himself against Blindness and Charms and against the random traps in the treasure cave. Without the scroll he probably would have had to flee the scene. The Improved Invisible Sirines would walk away all the time, in order to attack with their arrows of biting. Perseverance, healing potions and antidotes, and spreading his foes by entering the cave, helped Vallon through the ordeal. Inside, one of the Flesh Golems brought Vallon’s health to dangerously low levels, but an invisibility potion and subsequent healing helped him restore his health.

Spoiler

Vallon traveled to Beregost where he finished off Silke in close combat, again relying on Rage.

Spoiler

I must say that the Sword makes life for Vallon quite a bit easier. Vallon buys or otherwise acquires all anti-magic potions (Shielding, Blocking, Protection) and scrolls he can get his hands on (only two so far: one at Thalantyr’s and one from Hafiz the Gnome). The sword’s enrage ability has allowed Vallon to take on a few optional foes, such as Droth for his Helmet of Defense and Silke, and to save some of his anti-magic consumables for later. Other players could use the Greenstone Amulet for this purpose; I usually can’t find it due to Item Randomization..
After he was done with Silke, he decided to further train himself as an Undead Hunter (for max XP, and level 8) before tackling the plot quests. Vallon traveled to the Valley of the Tombs (i.e. Nashkel Mines exit), where a potion of heroism and his replenished stock of healing potions helped him best the Revenant. Narcillicus and his Mustard Jellies caused Vallon quite some trouble. A potion of magic blocking helped gave him three round of protection the wizard’s spells, but his Jellies slowed Vallon, causing him to retreat. Only Narcillicus followed, and was dealt with in melee. He rested and slew the Jellies the next day in melee (so that their spit wouldn’t hit him).

Spoiler

The other undead in the area caused Vallon no trouble, and it was after slaying a Ghast that Vallon reached level 8 (his highest level for BG1, as I will respect the XP cap, even though it’s removed).
Vallon’s last mission before tackling the Nashkel Mines was Gullykin and the dungeon beneath it. His only potion of magic shielding was used against the dungeon’s wizards. Between Lendarn and the Ogre Mage, the latter was the first to fall. He was stuck between his Ogrillon minions, a wall and Vallon, so there was no escaping for the mage who, conveniently, dropped a suit of full plate mail. Lendarn did hurt Vallon with a few of his spells, (Cones of Cold and Melf’s Minute Meteors) but he would fall to Vallon’s blade just the same. Gandolar Luckyfoot was thankful and gave his ‘lucky ring0 (+1 Luck) to Vallon.

Spoiler

Vallon traveled to the High Hedge where he bought ten bolts of biting. Unfortunately there weren’t any more of the bolts for sale. He also acquired the Claw of Kazgaroth in case the Kobolds’ arrows would hurt him. (Vallon didn’t use a shield, and he hadn’t found the Elves’ Bane girdle or the Boots of Avoidance yet.)

The Nashkel Mines have three difficult parts: the bridge on the third level (where a character can get stuck, surrounded by a horde of the somewhat tough SCS Kobolds), the exit from the third to the fourth/final level, and Mulahey’s lair. On the bridge Vallon lured a few of the Kobolds his way, to see how their arrows did against him without the Claw of Kazgaroth. It turned out that he didn’t need the Claw, so he proceeded to slay all the Kobolds that crossed his path.
Near the level 3 exit more Kobolds fell to Vallon’s blade, until he faced the Kobold Chieftain and a Kobold Shaman. The Chieftain attakcs with extremely poisonous arrows, so Vallon decided to administer his foe a dose of its own medicine, with a bolt of biting. The Kobold Shaman injured Vallon with his spells (Chromatic Orbs, Magic Missiles), albeit slightly. He too got served a bolt of biting. The remainder of the battle consisted in Vallon slaying the Kobold without meeting much resistance.
Mulahey received two of the same bolts, and was annihilated in melee. He wouldn’t cast a single spell (other than his SCS-provided insta-cast spells). Mulhey’s Kobolds and Skeletons presented no real challenge. In terms of useful gear the loot was meagre this time: except for the decent Barcers of Archery that Vallon kept, only two enchanted short swords and a few spells he would sell.

Spoiler

In Nashkel, enraged Vallon slew Nimbul, and took his Boots of Avoidance. The Item Randomizer hasn’t been overly generous with Vallon, which caused him to seek out the likes of Borda near the Xvart village (someone I always skip), to see if he would drop something special. First however, Vallon had to fight Molkar & co in a very cramped area. Enraged, he withstood any mind-affecting magic, though Drakar’s Unholy Blights did do some damage. After a long fight, especially with Drakar and Morvin (who seemed to be the toughest meleers), Vallon was the only one standing.
Spoiler

The Xvarts and Borda were dealt with after that, but they didn’t drop any interesting loot. So Vallon returned to Beregost, where he took care of Tranzig. Enraged Vallon was very content to see the mage drop the Golden Girdle.
He proceeded to the Larswood where Lamalha and her girls ambushed him. They were less difficult to deal with than Molkar & co. Vallon first focused his efforts on the casters. The rogues had darts of stunning, but those wouldn’t affect Vallon since he’s immune to Hold (and in my setup that includes Stun but not Web).
Spoiler

He cleared the Larswood of its bandits but noticed that they were better archers than the kobolds, so he equipped the Claw of Kazgaroth for its bonus to AC against missiles. In Peldvale he slew a few more bandits until he was approached by Raiken, through whom he infiltrated the Bandit Camp.
Tazok wasn’t fought his time, since Vallon still hadn’t acquired the Boots of Speed. (I only attack him with Boots of Speed and an oil of speed.) It cost him the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise. Vallon didn’t bother with the many chests; he went straight for Tazok’s tent. Before entering he quaffed potions of invisibility, cloud giant strength, speed, and power (in that order), and he cast Protection from Evil on himself. Inside he moved to the west side of the tent, just within visual range of Venkt the wizard. He then activated his sword’s rage ability, and attacked Venkt with a bolt of biting, that poisoned the wizard. One or two more regular bolts finished him off. The others were fought with relative ease, until Vallon was the last one standing, with only moderate injuries. He healed himself, spoke with Ender Sai, drank a potion of absorption and opened the chest, which contained little more than a couple of spells. Again, not the richest possible harvest, although one of the bandit’s Long Bow of Marksmanship is a nice weapon.
Outside, still well-buffed, Vallon slew Taugosz for his full plate and for an enchanted large shield, took down many bandits for their scalps and Ardenor who had appeared out of nowhere and who would drop a Tome of what turned out to be Charisma, much to Vallon’s surprise. He left when the resistance was becoming too strong.
Spoiler

Vallon went to the Friendly Arm Inn to get some loot identified, and to sell it, and then he invited Imoen for a visit to the Nashkel Carnival, she would greatly enjoy. There she looted two chests from the merchant who sells the red and the violet potion. Potions of fire giant strength, invisibility and speed, amongst others, would greatly help in later battles. Imoen barely escaped being caught by the guards.
Spoiler

The pair also made a trip to Durlag’s Tower (upper floors). The Battle Horrors failed to hit Vallon, which gives hope for the Davaeorn fight, although Vallon also had difficulty hitting them. Inside Durlag’s Tower Ghouls fell to Vallon’s blade, and Kirinhale was pursued in vain (she kept going ethereal every time Vallon would close in on her). The trip provedvery worthwhile though, as it yielded Vallon a Greenstone Amulet, and a (randomized) Manual of Bodily Health, with which he raised his CON to 20. Not as good as a Manual of Gainful Exercise, but still pretty neat.
I’m now inclined to keep the Claw of Kazgaroth equipped on Vallon: I think relinquishing 8 HP and accepting the Save vs Paralyze/Death/Poison penalty is worth it for the AC and saves bonuses. Is there a specific threat other than Spiders and their Poisons that I should be wary of?
In the Cloakwood Vallon sided with Seniyad, and with a potion of free action he retrieved Spiders’ Bane for himself and Chelak’s body for Tiber. The druids were left in peace. Wyverns were luredout a cave and pelted with bolts for their skulls. Outside the Cloakwood Mines, Vallon quaffed two potions of Magic Protection, which granted him 100% Magic Resistance. He also used a scroll of Champion’s Strength he had bought at one of the Temples. The warriors were no match for Vallon, but as usual, the Mages were more difficult to deal with. When Vallon pierced their protections (Stoneskins, Mirror Images), they would go invisible and reluctant to show themselves. Both Vallon and Rezdan were struck by lightning. The latter even died due to it. Kysus became visible once, noticed how Vallon’s bolts were stripping him of his protections and went invisible again. He would only reveal himself after Vallon’s first potion of magic protection expired, very clever enemy AI. Kysus immediately cast a Chaos in Vallon’s direction, but timely acitivation of his sword’s rage ability, prevented the spell from affecting him. Vallon slew his foe with a nice critical.
Spoiler

Vallon is now preparing to enter the Cloakwood Mines.

@Blackraven - good luck with your solo undead hunter. What's your strategy for the battle horrors you'll have to encounter? In the past I've tried necklace of missiles, but usually melee - it's brutal though, so I buff to the max (heroism, STR potions, haste if availble, regen potion etc.), even then have had some hairy fights with my solo fighters vs. those battle horrors. If you can get 100% fire resist that helps resist the fire damage from their weapons.

Thanks Corey!

As to your question, when I fought the Battle Horrors, I was already level 8. With 18 DEX, full plate mail, the Golden Girdle, Ring of Protection +1 and Claw of Kazgaroth, my AC against slashing weapons was abour -10 I think. (Can't check now.) The Battle Horrors had a hard time hitting me. The toughest melee fights have been the Doomsayer and the Revenant.

Will Davaeorn's Battle Horrors be tougher than those at Durlag's Tower?

With 18 DEX, full plate mail, the Golden Girdle, Ring of Protection +1 and Claw of Kazgaroth, my AC against slashing weapons was abour -10 I think. (Can't check now.) The Battle Horrors had a hard time hitting me. The toughest melee fights have been the Doomsayer and the Revenant.

Will Davaeorn's Battle Horrors be tougher than those at Durlag's Tower?

Can't speak of SCS, but in vanilla I don't think so, I believe they have the same attributes as the battle horrors at Durlag's.

After defeating Greywolf, Isra joined our party, and after delivering the emeralds, we headed west to the gnoll stronghold helping a dog, a cat, and a dryad on the way. We collected a tome, Valiant became a lot more charismatic, Isra uses the gauntlets which make her far less vulnerable and at last she became a level three paladin like the rest of us.

We then went to finish off a job given to us by the temple, namely to kill Bassilus. We did so without too much difficulty.
